After going full-on vegetarian this year, I’ve seen my body react poorly to the new changes in my diet. I’ve seen more running injuries, (shin splints were never a problem before this year!) and an overall continuous feeling of exhaustion. One day, I developed patches on my tongue and cuts on the corners of my mouth. I put these symptoms aside and blamed them on the new mouth guard I’ve been sleeping with. But after two weeks the cuts never went away, and I started to get annoyed. I consulted Google to see if there were other ways of closing up the stubborn cuts on my mouth. Turns out, the cuts weren’t there because of my new mouth guard, they had developed because I was vitamin B and iron deficient!

The idea of my body reacting so violently scared me, so I went straight to Walgreens to load up on iron and vitamin B pills. One week later, the patches on my tongue cleared, and the cuts on the corners of my mouth closed up! It was frightening to experience the impact my vitamin deficiency was taking on my body. To this day, every morning I load up on woman’s multi-vitamin, a vitamin B complex, and an iron pill. I’ve seen positive changes in my energy level, and on my body as a whole. So readers, take your vitamins and eat your vegetables. Perhaps the ailments you have been feeling are the cause of a vitamin deficiency! [via]

Let me first say that I want to be Bear Grylls. The dude is amazingly crafty and knowledgeable about survival. So, in the spirit of Bear, here’s an infographic to keep you alive in the worst conditions.

Under normal circumstances, a working cell phone would be much more useful than a broken cell phone. But, if you’re down to nothing but the bare essentials, breaking your phone might just save your life.

Firstly, you can make your battery combust to create a fire simply by attaching a wire (found from inside your phone) to the positive and negative nodes. Then, I would assume that you would need to quickly catch some grass or leaves to light your campfire because the wire will disintegrate quickly. Other uses include widdling your circuit board or metal back case to make a good cutting or hunting tool. My personal favorite is the LCD screen that can alert a flying plane to your whereabouts. Just throw the peace sign toward your savior plane and hopefully they will pay attention to flashing lights. BAM. Saved.

Know about any other survival tricks? Leave a comment!

I have a dear friend that I met shortly after he had moved to the US from Spain. Having just come back from a semester in Spain myself, I was a little obsessed with the country and its inhabitants. We instantly became friends.

One time–not too long after meeting–we went to grab some drinks downtown. Fernando, being the gentleman he is, offered to pay. Everything was going great until I noticed that he had only left a 10% tip. I started to panic a little. I didn’t know him well enough to tell him to tip more, and I certainly couldn’t add to the tip without an explanation. I decided the best course of action was to wait till he wasn’t looking and throw a few extra dollars onto the bar.

Long story short, I got caught. He saw me stealthily try to sneak the dollar bills onto the bar and asked me deadpan, “Did I not tip enough?” I fumbled around for an answer and finally just said, “Nope.” He laughed and said that I should tell him these things, that he is new to the the US and doesn’t know what is customary. Moral of the story: honesty is the only policy, and you should always do your research before going abroad. The following infographic discusses varying tipping etiquette from around the world. [via]

Everyone who watches TV regularly probably has one or two favorite shows that they think were canceled before their time. Some shows only last a few short seasons before they’re promptly forgotten, while others eventually make a comeback (Family Guy and Arrested Development were both canceled before being revived by popular demand). Some shows, though, are unfortunate enough to only make it through their first season, if that.

Today’s graphic from wetpaint.com gives us a look into the world of single-season shows, from which networks are most likely to cancel a new program after or during its first season to which actors (and even producers) are more likely to be part of a one-season show. FOX, for instance, has the highest rate of shows discontinued after only one season at 46%, with The CW coming in second place at 35%. Out of the prospective genres of TV shows, sitcoms and dramas meet the axe most frequently on their first season, with comedies and sci-fi and fantasy shows next.

For more info on single-season TV shows take a look at the graphic below. [Via]

Let’s be honest, most of us treat our pets more like humans than animals. I’ve known dogs who have birthday parties every year and better wardrobes than I do. Some people have pets instead of kids and will do almost anything to ensure their well-being. This includes keeping them safe.

Summer is upon us, which means hotter weather, taller grass, and more critters in our backyards that bite, that could potentially injure our cats and canines. We love our domesticated beasts, but as much as we hate to admit it, they aren’t always the brightest of beings–especially if they feel threatened. Today’s infographic shows us what to do if our pets ever come across a snake.

I have an uncle who lives in the rural southwest who owned a golden retriever for a while. The poor creature managed to get into a losing fight with a rattlesnake three times. You would think the dog would have learned something after the first incident, but he continued to be a repeat offender. Maybe it was the rush of the brawl? The fact that dogs live to serve and protect? Either way, this dose of pastoral reality was never any fun for the dog or his owner. Hopefully, an incident like this will never happen to your pet. But if it does, keep calm, and keep this infographic in mind. [Via]

Music is something that is universally loved. Even if everyone doesn’t enjoy the same kind of music, you will be hard-pressed to find an individual that denounces all music as unentertaining. It is convenient that we all enjoy music as much as we do seeing as it does improve our brain function. If I had a dollar for every time someone tried to tell me that listening to classical music while studying made remembering material easier, playing Bach for a baby makes them smarter or that Nickelback sucks then I’d have enough dollars to buy some Tim McGraw Artist Series JBL On-Ear Headphones ($130.00).

One step further form listening to music would be the people who actually play the music. Musicians have improved working memories, can differentiate between sounds better and have more neural paths in their brain than the average Joe.

Ohh, coffee drinkers. It’s amazing what people will go through to get their daily dose of caffeine. I’ve worked as a barista on and off for a few years now, and I couldn’t agree more with today’s infographic on the categorization of coffee consumers.

We had our regulars at the cafe–The fake breasted soccer moms who wanted their no fat, no foam, skinny vanilla lattes with exactly three Equals and one Sweet and Low. Angsty middle school skateboarders, who had nothing to do except order extra-large Caramel Frappuccinos, until they were sick to their stomachs, and trash our coffee shop. Fast-talking business guys, who could barely stop speaking long enough to tell us their drink order, who also winked an uncomfortable amount. Shy, bookish high school students, who didn’t care what was in their coffee, just as long as they could hide out from their parents and school for awhile. And then there was my favorite: a tall, white-haired old man, with a wizard’s beard, named Walt, who always ordered a decaf, no-whip, mocha, and got so absorbed in whatever he brought to read that day, that he’d frequently lose track of time, and exclaim, “You’re closing already?!”

A comic collection of characters pass in and out of coffee shops everyday, and the drink you order may say something about the kind of person you are. But don’t take coffee so seriously! However you order your cup of joe–personally, I like mine black–I think you will find that it goes perfectly with today’s infographic.

May is National Foster Care Month! For those of you who might be wondering, what exactly is foster care? Foster care is a term used for a system in which a minor is placed in either an institution, group home, or with a state-certified caregiver, a.k.a. “foster parent”. In my opinion, it takes a truly selfless person to be a foster parent because it is both emotionally and financially challenging.

According to today’s infographic, there is currently over 400,000 children and youth in the U.S. foster care system. In today’s economy, the cost of raising one of those children is a whopping $216,108! Therefore, you could imagine the financial stress that comes along with housing several foster children. Finances aside, raising foster children is also extremely emotionally draining. Many foster families build relationships with each other, so you can imagine the emotional toll it can take on both the youth and foster parents. Therefore, to ease the stress on foster families, Sleep Train is making donations to help ease the financial aspect for these families. You can help also! You can make an in-store donation, donate money online, or host your very own supplies drive! Every bit of help counts, so start today!

For today’s infographic we have a bit of humour for you. For those of you who are still n00bs (aka novices), NSFW is internet short-hand for something that would not be appropriate for the workplace or any other public place for viewing on your internet browser. So basically this would include anything with profanity, nudity or other suggestive content. It’s handy for blogs to post this next to a link or video so that people won’t think you’re a weirdo.

So now that you know what is ‘not safe for work’, it can be a slippery slope of discretion as to what is safe. This infographic aims to alleviate that confusion. The center represents the heart of NSFW – so basically pornography. Moving outward from the center the NSFW-ness declines with each ring. Outside the circle you have the IRS website and Propublica (a news source). Seemingly a little too ‘SFW’? Not too sure; but the rest of the infographic has a nice gradient from the boring to the time-suckers to the WTF kind of websites. For instance, I did not know that there was a site dedicated to erotic Sonic the Hedgehog fan art… You know, I learn something new every day. Enjoy!

Lately I’ve been experiencing a bit of nostalgia for college. I’m three years removed from it now, and watching all the recent grads get excited about grown-up life has made me want just the opposite. I attended a small, Catholic, liberal arts university. Inconsequentially, it was the type of university where we all knew each other way too well, or at the very least, we knew how each one of us took our coffee and what clubs we belonged to. Coming across this infographic was a walk down memory lane.

Fortunately, I don’t fit perfectly into the mold of any of the characters below, but if I had to choose one, I would choose “PJ” girl. It is a fact that I didn’t wear a stitch of makeup until I walked the stage at my graduation, I always had a cup of coffee in my hand, and my outfit (if that’s what you want to call it) was always comprised of at least 30% spandex. So there’s that.

Congratulations to all those recent grads out there! Try really hard not to be “Little Miss Potato Chip.” Nobody likes that. And know that pajamas in public are inexcusable. Now it’s all about the yoga pants.
