Here’s what makes me mad, though: Outrageous bonuses for executives who have failed.

Banks that are getting taxpayer bailouts awarded their top executives nearly $1.6 billion in salaries, bonuses, and other benefits in the calendar year 2007, an Associated Press analysis reveals.

The rewards came even at banks where poor results last year foretold the economic crisis that sent them to Washington for a government rescue. Some trimmed their executive compensation due to lagging bank performance, but still forked over multimillion-dollar executive pay packages.

This is absolutely outrageous. Not only is it outrageous, it’s outrageous in a bipartisan kind of way. This isn’t just a liberal issue — everyone should be furious about this. Liberals have decried the rising income gap in this country; now, executives are still getting huge bonuses even as unemployment soars. Conservatives have long called for merit pay as a form of accountability; they should be railing against Wall Street’s perversion of their policies.

The bottom line is that the financial industry in this country needs to be reigned in. First, it was AIG and their luxurious retreats; then Goldman Sachs funneling their profits to offshore corporations; now, it’s Wall Street executives continuing to earn excessive incomes despite their complete and utter failure.

They’re fiddling while the economy burns. Isn’t anyone willing to stop them?
