More than $11 million were diverted from the Hammocks homeowners associations, more than five times the amount prosecutors originally tracked as misappropriated funds when they filed charges almost four years ago, authorities revealed.

The money was taken from about 18,000 residents who live in the Hammocks and pay assessments to the HOA, which is South Florida’s largest association and the second biggest in the state.

The newly revealed depth of the theft was announced on Thursday shortly after the ringleader of the scheme, former board President Marglli Gallego, and her husband, Jose Antonio Gonzalez, pleaded guilty to charges for their role in the fraud.

“The now-convicted thieves ran the Hammocks HOA like an organized crime syndicate only to benefit themselves, their family and their friends,” Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle said at a news conference held shortly after the guilty pleas. “Their victims were each of the homeowners.”

Prosecutors first charged the couple, as well as three other ex-board members, in late 2022, and in subsequent years charged three more people, two of whom are Gallego relatives, for their roles in the scheme.

Gallego, who served as Hammocks president from 2017-21, pleaded guilty to a count of racketeering and a count of grand theft. She was sentenced to seven years in prison, which the state attorney said is the longest prison sentence for a board president.

Gallego, the only defendant in the Hammocks case who was denied bond, has been in jail for nearly four years awaiting trial as she previously maintained her innocence. She will receive credit for time served.

Gonzalez, who also previously maintained his innocence, pleaded guilty to one count of money laundering and was sentenced to seven years of probation.

The full scale of the fraud was unclear at first, with prosecutors originally outlining nearly $2 million as misappropriated in a 2022 arrest affidavit. At the time, it was difficult to pinpoint the breadth of the scheme because the Gallego-led board stood in the way of investigators trying to obtain HOA records, including defying court orders to produce the documents, Fernandez Rundle said. Gallego also sued the Miami-Dade County police officers assigned to investigate and monitor the HOA.

“She never wanted us to have access to those records,” Fernandez Rundle said.

After the 2022 charges, court-appointed Hammocks receiver David Gersten stepped into the shoes of the HOA and was able to access the clubhouse and off-site locations where paper records were stored.

The clubhouse had a hatch in the floor where documents were stored. Fernandez Rundle showed a video of one of the off-site facilities, labeled as a “spa” on the storefront, where seemingly thousands more papers were kept.

These records, though vast, only revealed part of the money flow, with bank records also helping fill in the holes.

Forensic accountants hired under the receivership case did a complete rebuild of the bank records in order to determine who was paid what, according to Melanie Damian, an attorney part of the receiver’s team.

Prosecutors originally outlined a scheme in which former board members hired fake vendors that did little to no work at the Hammocks and then the HOA’s payments to these vendors were diverted, including to Gallego and Gonzalez.

While that was one of the ways funds were misappropriated, there were two other mechanics the forensic accounting revealed: Hammocks employees were on the payroll but did no work for the HOA, and some vendors were “partially legitimate” because they did some work at the Hammocks but were then overpaid in order to give kickbacks to Gallego and others, Damian said.

In some instances, the bogus vendors were run by family or friends of former board members.

Gallego, who was first elected to the board in 2015, in some ways “targeted” the Hammocks by purchasing a 1 percent share in a condominium at the HOA in order to qualify to run for the board, Fernandez Rundle said.

The Hammocks essentially became a “cash cow in her [Gallego’s] diabolical scheme,” Fernandez Rundle said.

Aside from her prison sentence, she is to serve seven years of probation and is banned from stepping foot at the Hammocks and from working in any HOA in the U.S. Gonzalez, who allegedly led some of the fake vendors, also tendered a $50,000 check and a 5-acre south Miami-Dade property to the HAO as restitution. The property was purchased with funds misappropriated from the Hammocks, Fernandez Rundle said.

Two of the four other board members originally charged, Myriam Rodgers and Monica Ghilardi, switched their pleas to guilty in 2024 and have cooperated with the investigation. A case is pending against the fourth former board member, Yoleidis Lopez Garcia, and three others charged in more recent years, all of whom have pleaded not guilty.

were diverted from the Hammocks homeowners associations, more than five times the amount prosecutors originally tracked as misappropriated funds when they filed charges almost four years ago, authorities revealed.u0026nbsp;u003c/pu003enu003cpu003eThe money was taken from about 18,000 residents who live in the Hammocks and pay assessments to the HOA, which is South Florida’s largest association and the second biggest in the state.u0026nbsp;u003c/pu003enu003cpu003eThe newly revealed depth of the theft was announced on Thursday shortly after the ringleader of the scheme, former board President Marglli Gallego, and her husband, Jose Antonio Gonzalez, u003ca href="/miami/2026/04/30/hammocks-marglli-gallego-husband-plead-guilty-to-hoa-fraud/"u003epleaded guiltyu003c/au003e to charges for their role in the fraud.u0026nbsp;u003c/pu003enu003cpu003e“The now-convicted thieves ran the Hammocks HOA like an organized crime syndicate only to benefit themselves, their family and their friends,” Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle said at a news conference held shortly after the guilty pleas. “Their victims were each of the homeowners.”u0026nbsp;u003c/pu003enu003cfigure class="wp-block-image size-full"u003eu003cimg loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1200" height="800" src=" alt="" class="wp-image-1028948" srcset=" ex-board members, in late 2022, and in subsequent years charged three more people, two of whom are Gallego relatives, for their roles in the scheme.u0026nbsp;u003c/pu003enu003cpu003eGallego, who served as Hammocks president from 2017-21, pleaded guilty to a count of racketeering and a count of grand theft. She was sentenced to seven years in prison, which the state attorney said is the longest prison sentence for a board president.u0026nbsp;u003c/pu003enu003cpu003eGallego, the only defendant in the Hammocks case who was denied bond, has been in jail for u003ca href="/miami/2025/04/10/judge-denies-hammocks-marglli-gallegos-plea-for-bond/"u003enearly four yearsu003c/au003e awaiting trial as she previously maintained her innocence. She will receive credit for time served.u0026nbsp;u003c/pu003enu003cpu003eGonzalez, who also previously maintained his innocence, pleaded guilty to one count of money laundering and was sentenced to seven years of probation.u0026nbsp;u003c/pu003enu003cpu003eThe full scale of the fraud was unclear at first, with prosecutors originally outlining nearly $2 million as misappropriated in a 2022 arrest affidavit. At the time, it was difficult to pinpoint the breadth of the scheme because the Gallego-led board stood in the way of investigators trying to obtain HOA records, including defying court orders to produce the documents, Fernandez Rundle said. Gallego also sued the Miami-Dade County police officers assigned to investigate and monitor the HOA.u0026nbsp;u003c/pu003enu003cpu003e“She never wanted us to have access to those records,” Fernandez Rundle said.u0026nbsp;u003c/pu003enu003cpu003eAfter the 2022 charges, u003ca href="/miami/2023/02/28/living-under-a-terror-situation-alleged-hammocks-fraud-tops-3m/"u003ecourt-appointed Hammocks receiveru003c/au003e David Gersten stepped into the shoes of the HOA and was able to access the clubhouse and off-site locations where paper records were stored.u0026nbsp;u003c/pu003enu003cpu003eThe clubhouse had a hatch in the floor where documents were stored. Fernandez Rundle showed a video of one of the off-site facilities, labeled as a “spa” on the storefront, where seemingly thousands more papers were kept.u0026nbsp;u003c/pu003enu003cpu003eThese records, though vast, only revealed part of the money flow, with bank records also helping fill in the holes.u0026nbsp;u0026nbsp;u003c/pu003enu003cpu003eForensic accountants hired under the receivership case did a complete rebuild of the bank records in order to determine who was paid what, according to Melanie Damian, an attorney part of the receiver’s team.u0026nbsp;u0026nbsp;u003c/pu003enu003cpu003eProsecutors originally outlined a u003ca href="/miami/2024/11/08/eighth-person-charged-in-alleged-hammocks-fraud-scheme/"u003eschemeu003c/au003e in which former board members hired fake vendors that did little to no work at the Hammocks and then the HOA’s payments to these vendors were diverted, including to Gallego and Gonzalez.u0026nbsp;u003c/pu003enu003cpu003eWhile that was one of the ways funds were misappropriated, there were two other mechanics the forensic accounting revealed: Hammocks employees were on the payroll but did no work for the HOA, and some vendors were “partially legitimate” because they did some work at the Hammocks but were then overpaid in order to give kickbacks to Gallego and others, Damian said.u0026nbsp;u003c/pu003enu003cpu003eIn some instances, the bogus vendors were run by family or friends of former board members.u003c/pu003enu003cpu003eGallego, who was first elected to the board in 2015, in some ways “targeted” the Hammocks by purchasing a 1 percent share in a condominium at the HOA in order to qualify to run for the board, Fernandez Rundle said.u003c/pu003enu003cpu003eThe Hammocks essentially became a “cash cow in her [Gallego’s] diabolical scheme,” Fernandez Rundle said.u0026nbsp;u003c/pu003enu003cpu003eAside from her prison sentence, she is to serve seven years of probation and is banned from stepping foot at the Hammocks and from working in any HOA in the U.S. Gonzalez, who allegedly led some of the fake vendors, also tendered a $50,000 check and a 5-acre south Miami-Dade property to the HAO as restitution. The property was purchased with funds misappropriated from the Hammocks, Fernandez Rundle said.u0026nbsp;u003c/pu003enu003cpu003eTwo of the four other board members originally charged, Myriam Rodgers and Monica Ghilardi, switched their pleas to guilty in 2024 and have cooperated with the investigation. A case is pending against the fourth former board member, Yoleidis Lopez Garcia, and three others charged in more recent years, all of whom have pleaded not guilty.u0026nbsp;u003c/pu003en","noAds":false,"alternativeHeadline":{"subheadline":"Ringleader Marglli Gallego pleaded guilty for her role in the scheme. The buyer was Marinus Limited. Fort Partners, led by Nadim Ashi, has seen a string of eye-popping sales lately at the ultra-luxury development, which sits on the waterfront and has 34 units. ODP Architecture designed the Seaway North, construction on the project commenced in 2024.

Residential: The second-priciest home sale was also at Fort Partners’ Seaway at Surf Club North at 9165 Collins Avenue, where Fana Surf Club LLC purchased a pad for $39 million.

Residential: In Miami Beach, a trust scooped up a home at 5515 Pine Tree Drive for $23.8 million. The waterfront home, built last year, spans about 7,000 square feet. The deal breaks down to about $3,400 per square foot. The property has six bedrooms and eight and a half bathrooms, along with a pool, outdoor grill and patio. The seller was an LLC tied to Montreal-based developer Georges Dayan, who acquired the site in 2021 for $6.1 million. The property went on the market a year ago, with an asking price of $25.9 million. Kaila Mardoyan with Douglas Elliman represented the seller, and David Siddons, also with Douglas Elliman, brought the buyer.

Residential: Christopher Sanz, a real estate executive, and Allison Sanz dropped $8.4 million on a 7,700-square-foot home at 8955 Southwest 63rd Court in Pinecrest. The seller was NHG ARK LLC, which is linked to Barry and Renee Grosse, a healthcare compliance specialist and attorney, respectively. The home was built in 2013 and has six bedrooms, seven bathrooms and two powder rooms. It last traded in 2018 for $5.3 million.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said Thursday he will quickly sign the new Congressional district map his office put before state legislators this week.

Appearing at a groundbreaking for an interstate interchange in Ormond Beach, DeSantis replied that he will sign the controversial legislation (HB 1D) “as soon as I get it.”

“This is something that we’ve been fighting for a number of years … the fact that we’ve had so much population growth and the districts are really not representative of where Florida is today versus four years ago,” DeSantis said while at Destination Daytona in Ormond Beach. “So we had justification. “

The Florida House and Senate approved the major mid-decade redrawing of the state’s 28 congressional districts Wednesday, a move that could help Republicans retain control of the U.S. House in the midterm elections.

Democrats and voting rights groups have also announced plans to contest the maps in court once signed.

The House voted 83-28 on the changes expected to increase Republican representation in the Florida congressional delegation that currently stands at 20-8.

The Senate voted 21-17, with four Republicans — Sens. Alexis Calatayud of Miami, Ileana Garcia of Miami, Erin Grall of Vero Beach and Jennifer Bradley of Fleming Island — joining 12 Democrats and one no party affiliation senator voting against the proposal.

The bill, though, hasn’t been formally transmitted to his desk.

A violent and deadly crash shut down a busy Doral street early Friday morning, and an investigation is now underway to determine what led up to the incident.

Few details have been released, but video from the scene showed a vehicle that was left in pieces after the violent crash.

The crash was reported in the area of 33rd Street and 107th Avenue in Doral around 2:30 a.m., and the area has been shut down to traffic while the investigation continues.

Video showed a large debris field, meaning the vehicle hit several objects before slamming into a tree.

The back half of the vehicle was found next to the tree, while the front half of the vehicle was found a short distance away.

Several evidence markers were also seen on the ground.

It’s unknown how many people were in the vehicle when the crash occurred, but CBS News Miami crews saw a body being placed into a medical examiner’s van at the scene.

Drivers are being asked to avoid the area.

No other information was released.

She added that she was “caught off guard” by the news, despite knowing that she had a high risk for the disease due to her mother and sister also having breast cancer.

“I always assumed this day would come,” she continued. “But let me tell you, you are never ready. … For some reason, even when you catch it early because you’re doing everything right, it is an emotional blow, and I wasn’t ready for that. That actually really surprised me. It really stung.”

Gore went on to share that she feels “I’m exactly where I need to be, and I’m surrounded by incredible doctors, and people who are taking such good care of me at home, thank you.”

“At work, thank you, my family here. I love you. I feel loved. I feel very supported.”

Gore ended her message to viewers with some uplift.

“As hard as this is, I am choosing to believe, at least for me in this moment in time, that maybe there is a gift in this, even if I don’t fully understand what it is yet,” she said. “I’m working on that part. If anything, it’s already a reminder of how precious life is and how important it is to focus on what really matters.”

During her time away, she will be undergoing treatment and taking “some time to rest and to heal,” she added.

“I’m going to come back better than ever, and I’m going to see you on the other side of this. Thank you for all you’ve done,” she concluded.
