Justice Amy Coney Barrett shared before the House Appropriations Committee that the uptick in threats waged against her and fellow Supreme Court justices have taken a toll on her children.

"They have required my children to think about and see things that children should not have to see or think about," Barrett testified Tuesday.

Barrett shared how her security detail gave her a bulletproof vest to wear, and one day when she brought it into her bedroom, her 12-year-old son asked what it was.

"And I didn't know how to respond because maybe I lack imagination, but I didn't expect that performing this service was going to put me in the position of explaining to my children what a bulletproof vest was, and why I had to wear one," Barrett told the committee.

Barrett and Justice Elena Kagan's testimony before Congress came as the Supreme Court seeks a 10% budget increase for fiscal year 2027, with roughly $16.6 million of the $20.7 million increase dedicated to expanding security for the justices.

Barrett, who was the target of a swatting incident in May, recounted how her and her family's lives drastically changed following the leaked Dobbs decision in 2022, which ruled that abortion was not a constitutional right, causing threats on her life to intensify.

In that incident, someone falsely reported gunshots at her home, Barrett testified, saying her teenage son and his friends were the first to discover the street filled with police.

"I was very, very grateful that I had Supreme Court police outside my home because they were able to stop and meet with and explain to the county police that it had been a false alarm, and so the police did not actually attempt to enter our home," Barrett said.

She also shared that her and other justices are receiving anonymous packages being sent in the name of Daniel Anderl, the 20-year-old son of U.S District Court Judge Esther Salas, who was killed in 2020.

The gunman was an attorney, posing as a delivery driver. Judge Salas was his target. Salas' husband was seriously injured as well.

"I think the message on these deliveries being sent in his name is clear," Barrett said. "As Justice Kagan said, federal judges across the country, throughout the judiciary, including the Supreme Court, continue to do their jobs without fear or favor, but the threat level is really high."

The testimony underscored the urgency behind the Supreme Court's push for more security funding during its first appearance before Congress since 2019.

In total, the Supreme Court is requesting roughly $89 million to cover their personal security costs, which Kagan said is necessary given that the Justices have experienced a 35% increase in threats just in 2026, compared to a 25% increase in threats the year prior. Kagan noted how recent growth in the budget can be entirely attributed to security expenses.

"For some of us, those threats have come very close and all of us live with the knowledge that they may again materialize," Kagan testified.

She recalled that when she arrived at the Supreme Court in 2010, justices did not receive around-the-clock personal protection. Instead, the court's police primarily guarded the building, and she only had security accompanying her during work-related public events.

But Kagan said the heightened focus on justices' security began after Justice Antonin Scalia's death in 2016. Scalia died while on a hunting trip in Texas, where he was hours away from security personnel after declining a private security detail for the trip.

Kagan recalled that Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., and the late Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, D-Md., came to Chief Justice John Roberts to push them to step up their security.

"This was how the Chief described it to us — they said, kind of like, 'We think you're crazy, you know, that you have less security than the director of the Office of Personnel Management does. And we think that you have to do better.'

"Then, of course, the Dobbs leak happened, and that really increased the urgency of the entire thing," Kagan said. "But we've been working on this now for about a decade and actually, I think, are grateful to Congress for coming to us and saying, 'You have to up your game in this area.'"

Senate Democrats drew a rare line in the sand against a yearly, must-pass defense package in an act of rebellion against President Donald Trump.

Democrats blocked a procedural hurdle for the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), a perennial bill that opens up funding for the Pentagon and military. Many were already frustrated by the overall funding target of the package and pushed over the edge by the renewal of the Iran war.

"It’s very disappointing," Sen. Jim Banks, R-Ind., a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, told Fox News Digital.

"It's about supporting our troops, supporting our military, and it's disappointing when Democrats play games with that," he continued.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., charged on the Senate floor that Republicans wanted the upper chamber to take up the bill "as though none of this is happening."

"The president is waging an unauthorized war, defying bipartisan majorities in Congress, refusing to level with the American people at the cost of the mission or the endgame," Schumer said. "The NDAA cannot become a permission slip for that recklessness that we see occurring in Iran."

Early signs of trouble for this year’s NDAA first appeared during the Senate Armed Services Committee’s vote to advance the legislation. The majority of Democrats, nine out of 13 on the panel, voted against it.

Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., was one of the "no" votes, something he acknowledged was a rare move.

He said guardrails needed to be added to Trump’s war authorities in Iran and a deeper explanation provided of where exactly the where exactly the staggering $1.15 trillion authorized by the bill would come from.

"The Iran war issue is, I think, one of the major issues about the NDAA, but it's not the only issue," Kaine said. "The absence of knowing where this money is coming from to do this dramatic top-line increase? That still has to get resolved."

Republicans, however, contended that taking the first step on the bill would allow for an amendment process to modify it.

Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., who also sits on the Senate Armed Services Committee, told Fox News Digital, "It's pretty frustrating, people need to come together and act in the best interest of the country."

"We have to, you know, we have to have a strong military," Scott said. "Whether we like it or not, people decide to be our enemies. They want to destroy us. So I think we ought to, you know, get on the bill and if we need to do amendments, let's start amending it."

'Bachelorette' star reveals brain tumor diagnosis after routine health scan

This reality TV star thought a routine health scan would bring peace of mind.

Instead, the "Bachelor in Paradise" star revealed it uncovered what appears to be an early-stage brain tumor, sending him on a whirlwind journey that will soon lead to brain surgery.

The shocking discovery began with what Joe Amabile expected would be a routine full-body scan.

"So a little medical update. I didn’t share my Prenuvo results because they ended up finding a lesion in my brain," he said in a video shared to Instagram. "So then I had to go get a brain MRI, and there was a blueberry-sized lesion in my brain that looks to be a glioma, which is a tumor."

The additional testing quickly led to a treatment plan. Amabile revealed he would undergo a craniotomy in two weeks to remove the tumor, so doctors could test it.

"So I now need to get brain surgery [in two weeks] to get it removed and get it tested, and then we’re gonna go from there," he explained. "So it’s been a wild couple weeks. Definitely wasn’t expecting this."

Reflecting on the whirlwind diagnosis, Amabile said he never expected to find himself in this position.

"I think it’s one of those things where you’re like, ‘Oh, something like this'll never happen to me,’ and here I am," he said. "They say it’s really early stages. I hope they are able to get it all, and I’m fine. But I will keep you updated."

The former "Bachelorette" contestant shared additional details in the caption of his video. Amabile also reflected on the emotional toll of the diagnosis.

"I’m doing my best to stay positive during this time and am lucky to have a lot of support from family and friends," he added.

"I’ve gone back and forth about what I wanted to share on social media but ultimately, this is now part of my life now, so might as well. Onto a new journey."

At every World Cup, there are a few teams that become tournament darlings. This year it was the likes of Cape Verde, Scotland and Norway.

Of those three, none made a deeper run than Norway. And while it came up short against England this past weekend, the team returned home like the boat-rowing (fine, technically sailing) conquering heroes its ancestors once were.

And, boy, did they ever get one hell of a parade.

The team returned home this week — taxidermied raccoons in hand — after a 2-1 loss in extra time to the Three Lions.

Of course, even with star striker Erling Haaland, the team getting to the quarterfinals was a huge achievement for the Scandinavian nation, and their best World Cup performance ever, topping a pair of Round of 16 appearances in 1938 and 1998.

Clearly, it meant a lot, because people turned out in droves to cheer on the team in Oslo as they left the Royal Palace.

Again, I feel like this has to be reiterated: this is for a team knocked out in the quarterfinals.

We've seen championship parades here in the States that didn't draw crowds like that, and there are fewer than six million people in the entire country!

World Cup success is always relative. For some nations, just making it is a victory.

But if that's Norway after bowing out in the quarterfinals, I don't think they could've handled going much further.

Oslo would be bursting at the seams if they made it to the semifinals, and who knows what could've happened had they pulled off a miracle and won it all.

I think we'd wake up the next morning and Norway would be missing on the map. There'd just be a void north of Denmark and west of Sweden.

It's probably safe to say that with Haaland only in his mid-twenties, the Norwegians will be back in action at the next World Cup in 2030.

And maybe they'll end up having reason for an even wilder celebration.

The Open Championship released its first- and second-round tee times Monday, and the R&A made sure the two biggest stars in golf are featured in two marquee groupings.

Defending Champion Golfer of the Year Scottie Scheffler will play alongside two-time U.S. Open champion Bryson DeChambeau and Tyrrell Hatton during the opening two rounds at Royal Birkdale.

Six-time major champion and world No. 2 Rory McIlroy was paired with a couple of former major winners: Xander Schauffele, who won the 2024 PGA Championship and Open Championship, and England's Matt Fitzpatrick, winner of the 2022 U.S. Open.

Talk about loading up two groups with huge names. The R&A also decided to split the groups between the morning and afternoon waves, ensuring that Scheffler and McIlroy would be on the course at different times.

Scheffler, the world No. 1, enters the week looking to defend the Claret Jug after his dominant victory at Royal Portrush last year. He'll be joined by DeChambeau, one of the game's biggest draws. The interesting subplot here is current form for both players. Scheffler missed the cut at the Scottish Open last week, breaking a streak of 78 consecutive made cuts.

DeChambeau has struggled in the 2026 majors, missing the cut at the Masters, PGA Championship and U.S. Open. He had never missed the cut in three straight majors prior to this year. Questions are starting to mount about whether he's still in the conversation as one of the best golfers on the planet, and his performance at Royal Birkdale will be under a microscope. Add in the pressure of playing with Scheffler, and there's a recipe for one of the most intriguing major pairings of the entire year.

McIlroy, who completed the career Grand Slam at the 2025 Masters, will begin his quest for a second Open Championship alongside major champions Schauffele and Fitzpatrick.

McIlroy finished tied for 7th at the Scottish Open and carries strong form into the week. He's made the cut in all 10 events he's played this season, including a win at the Masters and four top-10 finishes.

While McIlroy has won the Masters in back-to-back years, he hasn't won any of the other three majors since 2014 when he won both the Open and PGA Championship. As a Northern Ireland native, McIlroy surely wants to add at least one more Claret Jug to his trophy case.

Playing alongside Fitzpatrick, who is tied for the PGA Tour lead with three wins in 2026, adds pressure on McIlroy. While the crowd figures to root for McIlroy, Fitzpatrick gives the group a home-nation angle as an Englishman.

That threesome is scheduled to tee off at 3:15 p.m. local time (10:15 a.m. ET) on Thursday.

Those aren't the only notable pairings at Royal Birkdale, either.

Chris Gotterup, who is tied with Fitzpatrick for the PGA Tour lead with three wins in 2026, will tee off with Sam Burns and Adam Scott in one of the more intriguing afternoon groups. Five-time major champion Brooks Koepka also gets a major-heavy draw alongside former Open Champion Shane Lowry and Aaron Rai, the reigning PGA Championship winner.

Jon Rahm, Tommy Fleetwood and Jordan Spieth are together in another loaded trio, while Justin Thomas, Alex Noren and Jason Day bring plenty of experience in the group immediately before Scheffler's tee time. Cameron Young, Wyndham Clark and Ludvig Aberg give the late wave another strong group, with Clark fresh off his second U.S. Open title.

Florida man who had sexual encounter with vacuum cleaner near Disney World takes no contest plea

Back in January, Kevin Dale Westerhold, 51, made an appearance in an edition of True Romance after a romantic encounter with a vacuum. The Florida man and Airbnb host's ordeal has made its way through the courts.

Sometimes the Florida man stories come into our lives and seem to disappear into thin air. We don't get to find out how they navigate through the court system. This isn’t one of those stories.

On Monday, Westerhold's case was closed after he took a plea deal for his indecent exposure arrest, which came after he was alleged to have "engaged in a sexual performance with a vacuum cleaner" outside a home in a gated resort community near Disney World.

The Smoking Gun reports that Westerhold entered a no contest plea to the indecent exposure charge, which had been reduced from a felony to a misdemeanor.

He was then sentenced, according to court documents obtained by the outlet, to 12 months probation. He was also fined $271 and ordered to undergo a "psycho-sexual evaluation" by Judge Juna Pulayya.

Witnesses were able to provide photos and videos of Westerhold to investigators of him "pleasuring himself with a vacuum in broad daylight," according to the police report.

A detective who went into detail in the report about what had transpired on the otherwise quiet day earlier this year in the gated community wrote that "He continued to penetrate the handheld section of the vacuum before using it to suction his testicles for further sexual gratification."

A neighbor at another property owned by Westerhold told police that they had seen him, without a vacuum nearby, walking around without clothes on. In another instance at this second location, the neighbor says they saw him only wearing a tank top.

I said it at the time, and it still holds true now. Let's hope all vacuum-related activities are conducted indoors from here on out.

Pilot's viral sky message leaves people stunned after unexpected flight path

A pilot has gone viral after leaving an unexpected message in the sky during a routine flight.

The pilot of the two-hour maintenance test flight over Northwest England traced the words "I'm bored" across the sky, with the unusual message and route appearing on the flight-tracking website Flightradar24.

The Ravenair-operated Piper Tomahawk aircraft departed from Liverpool around 11:30 a.m. Saturday. It spent about two hours flying over the Wirral peninsula, Cheshire and North Wales before safely returning, according to Flightradar24.

Gary Leff, a Texas-based travel industry expert and author of the blog "View From the Wing," told Fox News Digital there is little cause for concern, from his point of view, as the flight was conducted to test the aircraft rather than transport passengers.

"This was a test flight, not a passenger flight," Leff said. "Writing 'I'm bored' takes a certain amount of skill — and suggests the pilot was anything but distracted."

Leff noted that the most demanding work for pilots typically happens before takeoff, during takeoff and landing.

Leff added, "'I'm bored' is an amusing way to express this."

The aviation company, Ravenair, told the BBC that a flying instructor in his 20s was conducting a routine test flight after a replacement part had been installed on the aircraft.

"I think the pilot was literally a bit bored as it was just a test flight. Mind you, it was pretty skillful flying," Wes Barrett, operation manager, told the news outlet.

"He was a bit bored, but he probably had to concentrate a lot in the end to spell out the words," he added.

The flight path quickly went viral, prompting discussion across social media.

Three Russian nationals allegedly scammed Americans in 21 states out of more than $63 million, according to a December 2024 indictment that the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio unsealed on Tuesday.

The trio — Alexander Alexandrovich Volosovik, 43; Kirill Andreevich Zatolokin, 34; and Yulia Vladimirovna Pankova, 29 — conducted "malicious cyber activities against U.S. critical infrastructure" through their St. Petersburg, Russia-based companies Media Land, LLC and ML.Cloud, LLC, according to federal prosecutors.

"From their overseas safe haven, these defendants ran the criminal infrastructure that powered attacks on critical institutions across our nation," the Department of Justice Criminal Division's Assistant Attorney General A. Tysen Duva said in a statement.

"Their actions put the American public at risk. We will continue to dismantle these networks and protect our critical infrastructure from cybercriminals at home and abroad," Duva added.

The U.S. Department of State’s Rewards for Justice (RFJ) program is offering up to $10 million for information on foreign government-linked associates of the trio or for affiliates of their companies.

The companies "provided infrastructure and tech support to criminal client co-conspirators with the means to infect victim computers with malware and ransomware and then extorted those victims for money and cryptocurrency," the U.S. Attorney's Office Tuesday announcement read.

"Other computer-based crimes facilitated by Media Land and ML.Cloud included supporting criminal marketplaces, fraudulent domain registrations, and providing the platform from which to launch phishing and brute force attacks," the announcement added.

While many U.S. residents were victims of the group's products, their organizations targeted victims across the globe, prompting U.S. authorities to collaborate with international partners, a fact the U.S. attorney and the FBI both stressed.

"The victims in this case are not only in Ohio, but also in 20 other states across the country, touching every aspect of Americans’ lives. They include banks, schools, government entities, hospitals, and media companies," United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio David M. Toepfer said in a statement. "Together with our international partners, we will aggressively combat the efforts of individuals who hide behind computers anywhere in the world who seek to profit and wreak havoc by targeting the infrastructures that support our communities."

Other international organizations that Toepfer thanked included the National Police of the Netherlands and the Netherlands' Public Prosecutor's Office, the United Kingdom’s National Crime Agency, the United Kingdom Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office, the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Australian Federal Police.

"Today’s announcement underscores the importance of global partnerships and international collaboration, especially in a borderless world riddled with cyber criminals," FBI Cleveland Special Agent in Charge Josh DelManzo also said.

"The methods used by these bad actors, including ransomware, malware, phishing and other cyber activity, serves as a reminder that whether for business or personal use, when you are online, criminal networks will stop at nothing to hack, attack, share, or sell your information for their own greed, gain, and profit. The FBI and its partners will continue to identify and cripple criminal networks and freeze their infrastructures to reduce or remove the threats to the public and further protect trusting individuals and companies."

One of the nation’s most famous aviators and great heroes has announced a heartbreaking diagnosis.

Capt. Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger III, the pilot who saved 155 people after making an emergency landing in New York’s Hudson River in what became known as "The Miracle on the Hudson," shared in a public statement that he was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

"It is early stage," he revealed. "For now, this means a name may not come easily to me, I forget a story I have recently told, or I don’t sleep as well, but I am in the beginning of this long journey."

Sullenberger, 75, shared with People magazine that he’s had trouble recalling details within the last year, despite having a photographic memory. He received his official diagnosis in August 2025.

The pilot became a celebrity when he carried out the emergency landing of US Airways Flight 1549 on Jan. 15, 2009, after colliding with a flock of geese that resulted in engine failure. Everyone onboard survived.

Alzheimer's, the most common type of dementia, impacts more than seven million people in the U.S. over the age of 65, according to the Alzheimer’s Association.

"My doctor, Dr. Gil Rabinovici with UCSF Medical Center, has opened my eyes to the prevalence of Alzheimer’s," Sullenberger said in his statement. "This disease, he has told me, spares no age group and impacts millions of people around the world. It is the unwanted visitor at the door."

Sullenberger’s wife, Lorrie, shared with People that the diagnosis has not dimmed his strong demeanor.

"Just as he was the same steady person before and after Flight 1549, he is the same steady person now, before and after this diagnosis," she said. "That strength and steadiness is guiding us as a family."

"We’re supporting him on this journey that we now walk with so many other families. Though the future is uncertain, we continue to live our lives, have hope and find joy in the everyday."

Flight 1549 first officer Capt. Jeff Skiles also commented on the news of his friend’s diagnosis.

Fox News senior medical analyst Dr. Marc Siegel noted that Sullenberger had been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after the Miracle on the Hudson, which could have increased his risk.

"Age 75 is relatively late-onset," he told Fox News Digital. "PTSD doubles the risk of developing Alzheimer's because of changing brain chemistry and structure and sleep disruption."

Sullenberger reflected on how he has been a staunch advocate for travel safety, often addressing roadblocks in the aviation industry, fighting for increased pilot training and care.

Now, Capt. Sully, a former U.S. Air Force fighter pilot, plans to continue serving the public by focusing on raising Alzheimer’s awareness.

"This new phase of my life has challenged what it means to be of service," he said. "And the answer is to speak up. It is my hope that by sharing this, other families living in the shadows with this disease will feel they, too, can step forward."

"So many people told us after Flight 1549, that the outcome gave them hope," he went on. "Lorrie, my incredible partner of 37 years, says we can all use a little of that hope right now."

Alzheimer’s disease is a type of dementia affecting memory, thinking and behavior, as described by the Alzheimer’s Association. It accounts for 60% to 80% of all dementia cases.

It is a progressive disease, meaning the symptoms gradually worsen over time. The memory loss is usually mild in early stages, but late-stage Alzheimer’s can include loss of ability to carry a conversation and respond to environmental factors.

While there is no cure for Alzheimer’s, there are treatments that can help slow symptoms. Newer, more effective therapies are on the horizon, experts say.

Certain lifestyle changes, including mental and physical activity, have been shown to help prevent the disease.

Dr. Daniel Amen, a psychiatrist, brain imaging doctor and founder of Amen Clinics in California, previously spoke with Fox News Digital about Alzheimer’s risk and management.

"Alzheimer's starts in your brain decades before you have any symptoms," he said. "So, a 59-year-old woman I diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease likely had negative changes in her brain in her 20s."

"It's really never too early to think about protecting your brain and your mind."

Amen listed 11 major protective factors that can help ward off Alzheimer’s. These include promoting blood flow, reducing inflammation, and avoiding toxins like alcohol and drugs. Improving mental health, boosting immunity, getting adequate sleep and keeping diet and weight in check can also help reduce risk.

The doctor also recommends staying informed of hereditary diseases, maintaining a healthy hormonal balance and keeping the brain active in retirement.

Speaking to former CNN host Jim Acosta on her podcast, "The Best People," Wallace brought up Trump's disdain for the press, citing his assertion that the press is the "enemy of the people."

"When you take a look at what's public facing, right, that whole incident and the way they treated you [Acosta] with the cameras rolling, the press release about taking away your pass, Trump telling Lesley Stahl, 'I call you the enemy of the people because I need people to not believe you when the stories are bad about me.' I stopped carrying Sarah Huckabee Sanders briefings, just refused to carry him because having worked there, it like actually hurt me to watch her lying," Wallace said.

Wallace clarified that she wasn't suggesting administrations don't try to get the best press coverage they can or put the "best possible light on things their boss is doing," but that "lies" about immigration were effective for Trump politically.

Wallace angrily responded to the clip, "You know, we're not going to air that anymore. Let's make that the last Sarah Huckabee Sanders clip ever aired at four o’clock. Yup, that’s it. You know, it makes me sweat. That is vile."

Her show on MSNBC —which has since changed its name to MS NOW — debuted in 2017, the same year Sanders became Trump's press secretary in his first term. Sanders, who is now the governor of Arkansas, held the position for nearly two years, making her the longest-lasting press secretary of Trump's first administration.

Johnson scores win as conservative rebels end House floor blockade over voter ID bill

House conservatives ended their weeks-long blockade of the House floor Tuesday, handing Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., a key victory after the rebellion brought legislative business to a standstill for nearly a month.

The House successfully passed a procedural vote 215-211 teeing up votes on an appropriations bill funding the State Department, legislation making Daylight Saving Time permanent and a measure seeking to improve veterans’ benefits.

Johnson also agreed to pair the State Department funding bill with the SAVE America Act, prompting several conservative holdouts to flip their votes after demanding the House increase pressure on the Senate to pass the stalled measure.

Reps. Randy Fine, R-Fla., was the lone Republican to oppose the rule, while all Democrats voted "no" during the typically party-line procedural vote.

The conservatives had blocked all major House legislation since late June in an effort to force GOP leaders to hold floor votes on the Trump-backed SAVE America Act and a sweeping border security bill.

Given House Republicans’ slim majority, Johnson could afford to spare just a handful of GOP defections.

The speaker has been under mounting pressure to get the House moving again and advance a backlog of legislation ahead of the November midterm elections.

GOP leaders are racing to draft the blueprint for a third "big, beautiful" bill in addition to clearing government funding bills before the Sept. 30 deadline and a potential supplemental package covering the price tag of the Iran war.

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, R-Fla., who was among the GOP rebels that effectively shut down the chamber to pressure the Senate to pass the SAVE America Act, agreed to unlock the floor after Johnson proposed pairing the election measure with the State Department appropriations bill.

Johnson sought to attach the SAVE America Act to the House’s version of an annual defense policy bill before the July 4 recess, but Luna continued the blockade anyway.

"If John Thune strips it out in the Senate, that will be on him and the entire country should be watching what he does," Luna wrote on social media Monday.

Thune, who is supportive of the SAVE America Act, has repeatedly insisted that the votes do not exist in the upper chamber to pass the Trump-backed legislation amid unified opposition from Democrats.

That leaves House Republicans with little leverage to force Senate action on the SAVE America Act.

Some of the GOP holdouts had also threatened to oppose the rule unless House Republican leadership agreed to schedule a vote on a border security package.

Members of the conservative House Freedom Caucus are advocating for a vote on the Permanent Trump Secure Border Act, which would codify several Trump executive orders targeting illegal immigration, including ending catch-and-release policies.

"We need to deliver on codifying border security, deal with the birthright citizenship issue," Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, said. "These are all issues people that I represent care about intently and that we've talked about doing, and we need to deliver."

In a potential sign of trouble for GOP leadership, some holdouts criticized Johnson's planned legislative goals for the week.

"Making Daylight Saving Time permanent won’t matter at all if we don’t have election integrity," Rep. Keith Self, R-Texas, wrote on social media Monday, referring to the SAVE America Act. "Priorities."

Self ultimately voted "yes" during the procedural vote.

The GOP rebels' hardball tactics frustrated many House Republicans, who argued the strategy risked backfiring and paralyzing the conference's legislative agenda.

"There's a small group of Republicans who are upset at the Senate, as I think all of us are," Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, R-Fla., told Fox News Monday. "But I don't know how ... if you're upset at the Senate, why do you take it out on the conservative Republican agenda in the House?"

But some conservatives argued the House should do whatever it takes to get the SAVE America Act to President Donald Trump's desk.

Trump has repeatedly said the election integrity measure is his top legislative priority. He even refused to sign a bipartisan housing bill last week aiming to boost supply and lower costs in protest of the SAVE America Act.

"We shouldn't vote on anything else unless it has the SAVE [America] Act period," Rep. Ralph Norman, R-S.C., said Monday.

"Ideally, the Senate ought to take it up every day and make them vote on it and do a talking filibuster and keep them up all night," he continued. "That's the best course of action. I don't think they'll do that."

FIRST ON FOX: Rep. Mary Miller, R-Ill., asked two university medical leaders in a tense hearing Tuesday to directly answer whether non-biological women can have babies and didn’t receive a straight answer, prompting a fiery statement from the congresswoman to Fox News Digital.

"Doctor (Sam) Hawgood, you see UCSFs Classroom Guide, titled ‘Framework for Gender and Sex Concepts in Teaching,’ advises against using the term pregnant women," Miller told the chancellor of the University of California San Francisco in an Education and Workforce Committee hearing on DEI's impact in medical schools.

"Instead, it says to use pregnant people. Who are pregnant people compared to pregnant women? Just curious."

Hawgood responded by saying that terminology is "part of a curriculum to help our students who are facing a wide diversity of patients before saying the "vast majority of pregnancies are in women" and that he has "absolutely no problem with the term pregnant women."

"Has a non-biological woman ever had a baby?" Miller asked, and Hawgood responded that a "transgender person can."

Hawgood responded, "I would reiterate" before Miller interrupted saying, "It’s ridiculous."

"Lastly, Dr. Dubinett, a required course at UCLA medical school advises ob-gyn students not to, and, I quote, assume gender identity," Miller told Dr. Steve Dubinett, dean of UCLA School of Medicine.

"OK, from another class in May of 2026. It included a disclaimer that while it uses the term she and women, it does not intend to exclude, and I quote, ‘those who have a uterus but do not identify with these terms.’ What does that even mean?"

The dean responded, "I'm not familiar with that announcement that I'd have to read the entire thing."

Miller pressed Dubinett and asked, "Can someone have a uterus but not be a woman? Because it seems like your school is promoting that ridiculous idea?"

Dubinett did not directly answer the question but said that the school is "treating transgender people," but "we’re doing that in compliance with state and federal law."

Miller pressed again, asking Dubinett if the school teaches biology, to which Dubinett answered, "Yes we do."

"This is curious," Miller responded. "So, I'm going to ask you again, can someone have a uterus and not be a woman? Just say yes or no. Can they?"

"Again, I would," Dubinett said before being interrupted by the committee chair as Miller’s time expired.

"That’s what your medical school is promoting," Miller said. "Chairman, it's clear these medical schools are hiding DEI curriculum under the guise of medical access."

Miller, in an exclusive statement to Fox News Digital after the hearing, said, "It shouldn't take a medical degree to answer a basic biology question. This hearing exposed that our medical schools have become consumed by political ideology that they're losing sight of reality. Patients just want doctors grounded in common sense. Medical schools that abandon scientific truth should lose their accreditation."

Fox News Digital reached out to Hawgood and Dubinett for comment.

The House Education and Workforce Committee held a hearing, "Training Activists, Not Physicians: The Impact of DEI on Medical Schools." The hearing focused on whether diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives at medical schools, including the University of California, Los Angeles; the University of California, San Francisco; and the University of Illinois, have shaped admissions policies, contributed to antisemitism and influenced medical school curricula.

St. Louis Cardinals star Jordan Walker hit the baseball lottery by winning the Home Run Derby.

Walker, 24, made more money from winning the Home Run Derby on Monday night than he will earn this season from the Cardinals.

Walker homered on his final six swings of the night, and with his electrifying comeback that took down hometown hero and Philadelphia Phillies star Kyle Schwarber at Citizens Bank Park, he earned $1 million. The prize money more than doubled his income for the season, as he is earning $799,400 from the Cardinals, according to Spotrac.

The Home Run Derby featured a prize pool of $2.5 million. The winner received $1 million, the runner-up, Schwarber, received $500,000. The remaining six participants each received $150,000.

Tampa Bay Rays star Junior Caminero hit the longest home run of the night at 491 feet and was awarded $100,000 for the farthest blast.

Walker played the villain role on Monday, as the vociferous Philadelphia crowd cheered as loudly for Schwarber’s home runs as it did for Walker’s mishaps during the final.

"I was once told you don’t boo nobody," Walker said on the field as he received his trophy, according to MLB.com. "So it feels pretty good."

Schwarber opened the final with 11 home runs on 15 swings, leaving Walker with a tall task. It looked like Schwarber would win when Walker left the yard on just six of his first 12 swings, but he proceeded to blast six in a row to send the 43,863 Phillies fans home disappointed.

"I can't even describe how it means to win it," Walker said, voice hoarse in the moments following his victory. "It was a lot of swings, a lot of pressure, but I think I just had fun no matter what. Like, every round, I was having a good time."

Despite being on the receiving end of a lot of boos from the Philadelphia crowd, Walker did appreciate their love for their players.

"My thought was, ‘Philly is brutal,’" Walker said. "I mean, honestly. But I think it's pretty special because they love their players and that's what you want from your home … I can't hate them, because that's their guy."

Walker has emerged this year as a star for the Cardinals and earned his first All-Star Game nod. The Georgia native was one of the top prospects in the sport when he made his debut in 2023 and impressed.

During his rookie campaign, he hit .276 with 16 home runs and 51 RBI in 117 games.

However, over the next two seasons, Walker struggled. In 2024, he played just 51 games and hit .201 with five home runs. In 2025, he played 111 games and hit .215 with six home runs.

His struggles over the prior two seasons make his return to stellar play even more impressive. In 93 games this season, Walker has a .294 batting average with 22 home runs, and his 74 RBI lead the big leagues.

The 6-foot-6 right fielder’s presence in the lineup has helped buoy a young Cardinals team that has surpassed expectations this season. The Cardinals are 50-45, third in the NL Central and in the thick of the Wild Card race.

Walker will represent the National League in the All-Star Game when they take on the American League at 8 p.m. ET Tuesday on FOX.

Newly minted Sen. Darline Graham, R-S.C., represents a series of firsts for the Senate and for her home state.

Graham, who was sworn in on Tuesday, is the first female senator from the Palmetto State, the first sister ever appointed to the upper chamber and the first person to fill the colossal gap left behind by her late brother, Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C.

"Lindsey has always been there for me, and now I will be there for him," Darline Graham said during her appointment ceremony. "My brother was the most amazing person, outstanding leader and just a genuinely good man."

"If she took a role, she would be a great representative of our country. I can’t think of a better person to represent our country in an event than my sister," Lindsey Graham said in 2015.

Her sudden ascension to the Senate and subsequent swearing-in ceremony on Tuesday in the old Senate chamber just a few yards from the Senate floor capped a fast-moving first chapter in replacing her brother, whose shocking death sent shock waves through Washington, D.C., and beyond.

Darline Graham was appointed to fulfill the remainder of her brother’s term Monday by South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster. President Donald Trump recommended she get the position, and Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., spoke with her several times before appearing alongside her in Columbia, South Carolina.

"Lindsey took care of his little sister in years long departed. It's my honor to ask his little sister, Darline Graham, to finish his work for him now," McMaster said.

She is expected to act as a caretaker for the seat, finishing off the remainder of Lindsey Graham’s term through January, when a new face will take over as the junior senator for South Carolina.

Meanwhile, the public and private battle for the special election to replace Lindsey Graham as the GOP nominee in South Carolina is in full swing. So far, both Reps. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., and Ralph Norman, R-S.C., have shown interest in jumping into the race, which is scheduled for Aug. 11.

Trump has not yet said who he would endorse in the contest but did show interest in Rep. Russell Fry, R-S.C., who he backed in his first run for the House in 2022 when he toppled former Rep. Tom Rice, R-S.C., who was one of 10 House Republicans to vote to impeach him in his first term.

And in the immediate future, Republicans will have to figure out replacements for Lindsey Graham on the several committees he sat on.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., said the conference was still "working through" that task.

"Obviously, his sister will be sworn in today, and then we’ll figure out which of his committees she wants to stay on, and then we’ll go from there," Thune said.

President Donald Trump said Tuesday late Sen. Lindsey Graham's heart condition was "almost undetectable."

During a meeting in the Oval Office with newly elected Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi, Trump answered a question about the South Carolina Republican, who died on Saturday night. A reporter asked about the FBI reportedly being seen at Graham's home, and FBI Director Kash Patel has stated the bureau is assisting local authorities in the death probe.

"I've watched all the medical reports, I've had the doctors from the White House come in and explain what happened. And this is something that is almost undetectable and if it happens, there's not much you can do about it," Trump said in response to the reporter.

"You can detect it by if you have a very bad back. That's a sign," Trump added, saying that Graham would sometimes tell him he "had a bad back."

MEDICAL EXAMINER RELEASES PRELIMINARY FINDINGS IN LINDSEY GRAHAM'S DEATH AS DEATH CERTIFICATE REMAINS PENDING

"I don't see a lot of evil there," Trump said of the circumstances surrounding the senator's passing. "I don't I know there's all sorts of conspiracy theories going along, and I don't think the FBI, I think the FBI is wasting their time if they're doing that."

Graham died in Washington, D.C., one day after returning from Kyiv, where he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to discuss a new package of sanctions against Russia. A statement released by Graham's office on Sunday cited preliminary findings from the District of Columbia's Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, identifying the cause of death as an aortic dissection due to arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease, though the official cause of death remains pending additional testing.

Trump also said multiple times in the Oval Office on Tuesday that Graham's father died of the same condition, though Politico reported in 2015 that his father actually died of a massive heart attack, which is different than an aortic dissection.

An aortic dissection is a life-threatening medical emergency in which a tear develops in the inner layer of the aorta — the body's largest artery, according to Mayo Clinic.

Fox News senior medical analyst Dr. Marc Siegel, who did not treat Graham, told Fox News Digital that it can "come on in minutes or days and may be hard to recognize."

In an interview with ABC News on Monday, Mehmet Oz, a board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon, echoed much of what Trump said about how Graham may have died.

Oz, also the administrator of the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, used a paper towel roll as a prop to demonstrate what an aortic tear is.

"If the blood pressure is high or there is hardening of the arteries, which happens with age, you will actually tear this tube," said Oz, as he tore into the cardboard tube inside the paper towel roll.

"And as it tears, the blood, instead of being in the middle of the tube goes into the side of the tube, and there's no room to go there, so it starts to rip through these layers of the tube until ultimately there's no blood going where it's supposed to go," Oz said.

He continued: "So, you shut off blood to the heart, to the brain, the kidneys, to many parts of the body, and ultimately it just rips out. And when it rips out, it actually compresses the heart and that's called cardiac tamponade, and it's probably the reason we lost Sen. Graham."

Oz also said that when this happens to a person, there's not "a lot of time" to medically intervene and save them.

"The heart is pumping six liters a minute, so that's a lot of blood going in the wrong direction, spurting out of that tube, can take your life in many ways," Oz said.

Graham's sister, Darline Graham, was chosen by South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster to serve out the rest of her brother's term in the Senate, which ends on Jan. 3, 2027. Darline Graham is scheduled to be sworn in at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Summer travel PSA: If you come to Florida looking for great beaches, stay away from the Keys

The state of Florida is known for many things, but near the top of that list are a handful of some of the best beaches in the world.

Growing up in the Sunshine State and having lived here almost my entire life, I can vouch for that claim; just along the southeastern coast of the state alone are many of the most magnificent stretches of sand known to mankind.

Being a native Floridian, I can also be counted among the millions who have frequented the Florida Keys as a childhood vacation spot.

My point is, I know a thing or two about the region, so when I saw more than a few posts this past holiday weekend on Facebook travel pages from northern tourists lamenting the lack of sugar-white shores in Key West, my mind immediately reverted to an old Florida standby:

"You don't go to the Keys looking for great beaches."

I don't say that as someone who doesn't like the Keys, by the way.

Several of my fondest memories from both my childhood and adolescence stem from spending lobster mini season at our own little slice of heaven, a resort called Lime Tree Bay on Long Key.

It's my favorite place in the world, and if I had the choice, I would take my last breaths on Earth in one of their hammocks overlooking the Gulf as the evening storms rolled in off the horizon.

I'll never have a bad thing to say about the Florida Keys, but I have to warn anyone making their first trip down to the southernmost portion of the continental United States, because the beaches down there are few and far between and leave much to be desired.

I can't even count how many times I've seen angry travelers from the Midwest harping on the fact that Key Largo doesn't look like Clearwater Beach.

That is through no fault of their own, mind you. It just has to do with a lack of understanding regarding what makes the Keys so special.

There may not be a load of beaches adorning Florida's most famous archipelago, but there are a ton of great things to do while you're down there.

For starters, the Florida Keys are best enjoyed by boat, so if you don't have one of those, either rent one or find someone who does have one.

The fishing that can be done off of both shores is some of the best any experienced fisherman has ever experienced, and I have to make special mention to the Gulf side of that equation.

If you get seasick easily or deepwater fishing in general just isn't your thing, Gulf fishing will be your bag.

I wouldn't consider myself an avid fisherman, but having been born and raised in Florida I would say I know my way around a bait and tackle box, and I have never had more fun than when our group of friends would go "flats fishing" just off the Gulf shore side of the resort.

Mangrove snapper, sea trout, and Spanish mackerel all make for phenomenal eats and are found in droves in the Gulf, while it also isn't uncommon to hook your fair share of grouper, nurse sharks, and barracuda while there as well.

If you can't get a boat, I would argue a kayak offers an even more intimate view of the best parts of the Keys, so make sure you have access to one of those while you're down there.

Kayaking through the mangroves of Key Largo and Islamorada will show you a side of the state you've likely never seen before up close and personally, and if you pick the right time of year, you could come face-to-face with one of Florida's hidden treasures: the manatee.

Also, if you really are looking to scratch that beach itch while you're in the Keys, taking a boat ride out to one of the many sandbars along the string of islands is the way to go.

Just ask the locals which one is closest to you by boat ride based on which region of the Keys you're staying in (Upper, Middle, or Lower).

No matter where you end up around sunset, be it land or sea, make sure you position your gaze towards the Gulf Coast for what is, in my humble opinion, the most breathtaking spectacle on Earth.

I may be biased, but nothing tops a Florida Keys sunset, and I've been spending the majority of my adult life chasing the high of watching from the pool deck with my closest childhood friends as that famous fireball sinks into the vast ocean against a pink, orange, and purple backdrop.

Finally, Key West may not have the beaches that some of the other famous Floridian spots do, but there is still plenty of fun to be had all along Duval Street.

If you're into that sort of thing, bar crawling along the world-famous strip will offer loads of fun and plenty of interesting residents to swap stories with.

You can make the drive down to the Florida Keys with visions of sandy-white beaches in your brain, but you would miss out on everything else that makes that area one of the best in the world.

Law enforcement rallies behind Trump's AG nominee ahead of confirmation: 'Real results'

Several key groups are coming to the support of acting Attorney General Todd Blanche as he navigates Senate confirmation to officially become the successor to Pam Bondi, according to the office of Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Support cited by Grassley's office includes 670,000 sworn officers, 300 angel families, families who lost a loved one to crimes committed by undocumented immigrants, and 100 bipartisan U.S. attorneys and DOJ officials.

The office highlighted a statement from 23 attorneys general, among other outpourings of support.

Blanche took over the Department of Justice after Bondi left the role in April.

Since coming into the role, Blanche has steered the DOJ away from the Epstein controversy and refocused messaging on domestic security. Now that Trump has officially tapped him to become the next attorney general, The American Border Story (TABS), which represents Angles Families, said Blanche is key to continuing that work.

Blanche to lead the Justice Department and urge the committee to favorably report his nomination."

Another group of 78 former DOJ officials praised Blanche for steering the department back towards law enforcement and staying away from politically-charged controversy.

"Todd Blanche understands that the Department’s mission is to deliver justice—not to serve political interests or entrenched bureaucracies," the group said.

A 74-year-old man is set to become the oldest inmate executed in Florida history.

Dennis Sochor was found guilty of first-degree murder and kidnapping after 18-year-old Patricia Gifford refused to have sex with him on Jan. 1, 1982. He has been on death row since the 1980s and will be executed on Tuesday after the Supreme Court denied his appeal.

Sochor is set to be executed through a three-drug injection that is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. at Florida State Prison in Bradford County.

Sochor was with his brother when he met Gifford as she was celebrating on New Year's Day at a bar in the Fort Lauderdale area, according to Fox 13.

The group talked through the night but Gifford left with Sochor and his brother to get breakfast. Sochor drove his truck to a secluded area and asked Gifford if she wanted to have sex, to which she refused. Sochor then attacked the then-teenager, according to investigators.

Sochor was arrested in 1986 on unrelated charges and extradited to Florida, where he confessed to choking Gifford and disposing of her body.

His brother told authorities that Sochor was responsible for Gifford's disappearance, with her body never being found.

In 1987, a jury convicted Sochor of first-degree murder and kidnapping, and was sentenced to death.

While Sochor will be the oldest inmate in Florida who has been executed, an 80-year-old prisoner is scheduled to be executed later in July.

A Cuban national convicted of hijacking an airplane in the wake of 9/11 has been ordered released in Florida despite a standing order for his removal from the U.S.

Maikel Guerra Morales and several others assaulted a flight crew and hijacked a Cuban commuter airplane in 2003 and forced it to fly more than 100 miles north to Monroe County, Florida, where it eventually landed at Key West International Airport.

Morales was arrested that evening after U.S. Air Force jets scrambled from Homestead to intercept the plane, which originally took off from Nuevo Gerona on Cuba’s Isle of Youth.

Since then, he has been in U.S. custody, including for a 22-year sentence for "aircraft piracy."

A federal immigration judge issued an order of removal against Morales in 2023, and he ultimately was transferred to ICE custody after completing his prison sentence in 2025.

But, Clinton-appointed Judge John Steele in Fort Myers ruled last week that Morales must be released, citing a Supreme Court ruling involving foreign nationals languishing in custody with no country to take them back.

DHS Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis called Morales’ case "yet another example of an activist judge trying to thwart President Trump’s mandate from the American people to remove criminal illegal aliens from our country."

"Under President Trump and Secretary Mullin, DHS will continue to fight for the detention and removal of criminal illegal aliens who have no right to be in our country," Bis said in a statement.

Grijalva's father, former Rep. Raúl Grijalva, D-Ariz., died of lung cancer in March 2025. Raúl had already announced that he would not be seeking reelection after a 22-year stint in Congress.

Six months later, Adelita Grijalva won the special election for her father's seat, defeating Republican candidate Daniel Butierez Sr. by more than 40,000 votes, according to results published by the Arizona secretary of state.

Though Democrats cried foul when House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., initially delayed her swearing in, she officially became a member of the U.S. House of Representatives on Nov. 12, 2025.

Former Rep. Erica Lee Carter, D-Texas, also ascended into Congress as the result of a parent's passing.

Carter's mother, Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, was a progressive stalwart as the representative from Texas' 18th Congressional district, which includes parts of Houston, from 1995 until her 2024 death.

Though Jackson Lee won the Democratic primary for the 2024 election in March 2024, she tragically died of pancreatic cancer just four months later.

The Democratic Party, including Erica Lee Carter, initially rallied around former Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner to replace Jackson Lee in the November-scheduled special election. But, shortly after endorsing Turner, Lee Carter changed her mind and decided to run to complete her mother's term. Turner dropped out and Lee Carter won the election by nearly 100,000 votes, according to results published by the Texas secretary of state.

Lee Carter chose not to run for reelection, finishing her mother's term in January 2025 and choosing to cede the party's nomination for the seat to Turner.

Though Turner won the seat and was sworn in on Jan. 3, 2025, he would only serve for two months, dying of bone cancer in March.

Arguably the most famous example of a spouse stepping in for their deceased partner is the tale of Sonny Bono, who for years toured the U.S. with his then-wife, pop icon Cher, as one half of the iconic musical duo Sonny and Cher.

Bono and Cher would eventually divorce and, after marrying and divorcing a third wife, Bono wed his fourth and final spouse, Mary Whitaker, in 1986.

Sonny ran for U.S. Congress as a Republican in 1994, winning a seat as the representative for California's 44th district.

But when Bono died tragically in a skiing accident in 1998, his wife, then known as Mary Bono, ran in the special election to fill his seat. Mary Bono ended up serving 15 years in Congress, only losing her seat to Democratic challenger Raul Ruiz in 2013 after her district was redrawn.

In New Jersey, former Rep. Donald Payne Jr., D-N.J., replaced his father, former Rep. Donald Payne Sr., D-N.J., in Congress.

Payne Sr. had represented New Jersey's 10th district for 23 years, a tenure which was cut short when he succumbed to a fight with colon cancer in March 2012.

Payne's son, Donald Payne Jr., ran in the special election to replace his father and won.

McMaster's decision to tap Darline Graham to replace her brother will make her the first female U.S. senator in South Carolina history.

When their parents died in 1976 and 1977, Lindsey became his sister's legal guardian. Accepting McMaster's nomination for her to replace her brother, Darline vowed to return the favor of his lifetime of taking care of her.

"Lindsey has always been there for me. And now, I will be there for him," she told a crowd at South Carolina's statehouse in Columbia, South Carolina on Monday.

NY police car catches fire, troopers injured in 3-car collision

Towering flames and thick black smoke swallowed a New York State Police cruiser after a chain-reaction crash on a rural highway Tuesday morning, leaving two troopers injured, according to authorities, as dramatic photos captured the fiery aftermath.

The crash happened just after 7 a.m. on State Route 374 in the town of Plattsburgh. New York State Police said two marked Dodge Charger patrol cars were heading west when traffic slowed near an intersection for a vehicle preparing to turn.

Investigators said a 2018 Jeep Cherokee driven by 41-year-old Michelle L. Donah, of Saranac, didn't slow down in time and slammed into the rear of one patrol car, pushing it into the second cruiser.

The impact sparked a fire that engulfed one of the patrol vehicles. Dramatic photos from the scene show flames shooting high above the cruiser as thick black smoke poured into the sky. Local fire departments quickly put out the blaze.

Troopers Jacob R. Casey, of the Plattsburgh barracks, and Jakai E. Townsend, of the Lewis barracks, were taken to Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The return of the New World screwworm — a flesh-eating parasite eradicated from the U.S. in the 1960s — has raised fresh concerns about whether it could threaten the nation's food supply.

Unlike other foodborne diseases like norovirus, Ecoli and Salmonella, which sicken millions of Americans every year, experts say the screwworm is not a threat to the food on our dinner tables.

"The US food supply is not compromised by New World screwworm, which is an animal issue, but not a foodborne pathogen issue," Dr. Aaron Glatt, chief of infectious diseases at Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital, told Fox News Digital.

"While screwworm infestation is an infection of live animals, it does not result in meat, milk or produce becoming contaminated."

Screwworms die off during standard meat, processing and cooking, according to Glatt.

While native to South America and the Caribbean, the screwworm migrated north through Central America and Mexico following a 2023 outbreak in Panama and Costa Rica, the CDC says.

FLESH-EATING SCREWWORM FOUND IN TEXAS CALF AS RANCHERS BRACE FOR POSSIBLE SPREAD

On June 3, health officials confirmed one case in a three-week-old calf in Zavala County, Texas – the first detection in the U.S. since it was eradicated in the 1960s (excluding a localized outbreak in deer in the Florida Keys from 2016 to 2017), per the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Since early June, the USDA has reported 33 screwworm infections in animals in Texas and New Mexico – including cattle, goats and a pet dog.

The U.S. milk and food supply is routinely tested by regulatory agencies, according to Glatt.

"Animals used for human food production must pass inspection before and after slaughter to ensure that food safety and humane handling requirements are met," a USDA spokesperson told Fox News Digital.

"An infestation or animal illness that makes meat unsafe for consumers will prevent the animal from entering the food supply."

If an animal at a slaughterhouse shows signs of illness, the meat inspection system overseen by the USDA isolates it from others and labels it a "US Suspect" – meaning it needs additional examination by a public health veterinarian, per USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service regulations.

If an infection is discovered prior to the animal reaching the slaughterhouse, a veterinarian will treat the animal and disinfect the wound to prevent worsening infection.

Any livestock infected with new world screwworm are to be quarantined until all wounds heal, according to the UDSA.

A screwworm is a fly – typically the size of a common housefly or slightly larger. It infects warm-blooded animals – usually livestock, wildlife and pets – and only rarely may infect people, the CDC states.

An infection starts when a female fly lays eggs after being attracted to the smell of a wound, but the opening can be as small as the size of a tick bite. One female may lay up to 3,000 eggs during her lifespan (about 10 to 30 days), per the CDC.

The eggs hatch into maggots that "screw" into the wound to feed. After about a week, the maggots fall to the ground, burrow in the soil and morph into adult screwworm flies.

"It spreads only when an NWS fly lays eggs in a wound, not through meat, poultry or dairy products," the USDA spokesperson said.

"It’s also important to note that people do not catch screwworm from other people, and they do not become infected by eating meat," Dr. Bobbi Pritt, professor and chair of laboratory medicine and pathology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, told Fox News Digital.

"Most people living in the U.S. are very unlikely to ever encounter this parasite."

The fly thrives in tropical and subtropical climates, while colder temperatures help limit its survival. Some researchers warn that climate warming could expand the areas where the insect can survive if it becomes established, although experts say the current outbreak has been driven primarily by its northward spread through Central America and Mexico.

The USDA is combating current U.S. outbreaks by deploying sterile male flies to mate with female flies using a method known as the Sterile Insect Technique, which helped eradicate the infestation in the 1960s, per the USDA.

Since female screwworm flies mate only once during their roughly month-long lifespan, those that breed with sterile males produce no viable offspring, causing the population to gradually die out.

In May 2025, the USDA announced a $21 million investment to renovate a sterile screwworm fly production facility in southern Mexico, with production expected to begin as early as summer 2026.

The agency also plans to spend $750 million on a new "fly factory" at Moore Air Base in Edinburg, Texas, which is expected to open by November 2027.

"In the rare cases of human infection, the symptoms that should prompt someone to seek medical attention include a non-healing wound with pain, redness and swelling that is getting worse, a sensation of movement or crawling in the wound, and visible fly larvae in the wound," Pritt told Fox News Digital.

Maggots should not be removed without medical assistance, as attempting to do so can leave parts of the larvae behind and worsen the infection, per the CDC.

If any maggots fall to the ground, they should not be discarded in the trash, as this could spread the infestation. Instead, they should be placed in a leakproof container filled with alcohol to kill them, and a doctor should be contacted to safely remove the remaining maggots.

To protect against infection, the CDC recommends the following steps.

PORTLAND, Maine - The clock is quickly ticking in the race to replace former candidate Graham Platner as Maine's Democratic Senate nominee in the race to challenge longtime Republican Sen. Susan Collins.

Candidates gunning to win the Democratic nomination must file with the state party by Wednesday to get on the ballot. Eight Democrats have filed so far to run for the nomination, which will be determined by 601 voting delegates at a July 25 convention held by the Maine Democratic Party.

Platner, a populist Democrat who was backed last September by progressive champion Sen. Bernie Sanders, won the early June Democratic primary in a landslide. He was challenging Collins in a high-profile, combustible and expensive race which is one of a handful that will determine if the GOP holds onto its slim Senate majority in November's midterm elections.

A combat veteran and oyster farmer whose campaign caught fire, Platner steamrolled the Democratic establishment. But even as he crushed the competition to capture the nomination, Platner had already been forced on defense in the wake of a slew of scandals.

DEMOCRATS RUNNING TO REPLACE PLATNER CALL FOR ICE TO BE 'ABOLISHED'

Platner dropped out of the race last week, amid calls from top Democrats in Maine and across the country to immediately exit the race following an explosive report contained an allegation of rape from a woman he previously dated.

Facing a July 27 deadline to replace Platner with a new nominee, the state Democratic Party announced that all 16 Maine counties will convene special nomination meetings this weekend where participants will vote to elect delegates.

Those delegates will meet the following Saturday, July 25, in Bangor, Maine, to vote for the party's nominee.

Ahead of the vote, a "statewide network of volunteer leaders who organized, knocked doors, hosted events, and built the loop grassroots infrastructure behind Graham Platner's campaign," in an open letter on Tuesday to the state party made it clear that the organization they built "does not transfer automatically to whoever the Party selects."

"It will only continue to exist, and only continue to be deployed, for a nominee who publicly and explicitly adopts" a list of core progressive commitments that they listed.

The letter is a sign of the tough task ahead for whomever wins the nomination to quickly unite the different wings of the Democratic base.

Here's a look at who have already announced they're running.

Shah finished with the most votes in last month's Democratic gubernatorial primary, but lost the nomination to former Maine House Speaker Hannah Pingree following ranked choice voting.

Shah directed the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention from 2019 to 2023 and later served as principal deputy director of the federal CDC, stepping down shortly after President Donald Trump assumed office last year.

Touting his "strong progressive stances," Shah told Fox News Digital that "my message to those supporters of Graham's is a very clear one. You have a home in this campaign. You have an important voice in this campaign."

Jackson, a former Maine Senate President and fifth-generation logger, came in third place in Maine's Democratic gubernatorial primary.

Jackson campaigned with Platner during Maine's primary, and, along with Platner, was endorsed by Sanders.

He's backed by Sanders' founded "Our Revolution," as well as the Maine chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) as he runs for the Senate.

"This movement is always been bigger than one person. It's about taking on a system rigged against working people, fighting for Medicare for all, strong unions, higher wages, reproductive freedom, and an economy where billionaires and corporations finally pay their fair share," Jackson said Monday during a 'Our Revolution' virtual town hall, as he pointed to Platner supporters.

Bellows, Maine's Secretary of State, came in fourth place in the race for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination.

"Flipping the Senate in November is crucial. I’m running to pass Medicare for all, fight for workers’ rights, and protect our neighbors," Bellows said in a social media post.

If she wins the nomination, this will be the second time Bellows will face off against Collins. The senator topped Bellows by a more than two-to-one margin in the 2014 Senate election in Maine.

Wood is a former congressional staffer for Katie Porter who unsuccessfully ran for the Democratic nomination this year in Maine's 2nd Congressional District, a crucial swing seat.

Wood originally launched a Senate campaign last year, but pivoted to the House race when Democratic Rep. Jared Golden announced he wouldn't seek re-election.

"This campaign belongs to the Mainers who built it: the volunteers, small-dollar donors, and neighbors who filled town halls in every corner of the state. We refuse every dime of corporate PAC, AIPAC, and lobbyist money, because a movement funded by the people answers only to the people," Wood said on social media.

This is Costello's second run this year for the Senate nomination.

He finished with 8% of the vote in the June primary, coming in third behind Platner and Gov. Janet Mills, who had already suspended her campaign but her name remained on the ballot.

A former Maryland Department of the Environment deputy secretary, Costello was the Democratic Senate nominee in Maine in the 2024 election, coming in a distant third to incumbent independent Sen. Angus King.

A co-founder of the Maine Beer Company, Kleban briefly ran for the Democratic Senate nomination before dropping out and endorsing Mills.

"I fully support an open, transparent process to earn the trust of our delegates, unite our party, and bring a new generation of leadership to Washington," Kleban wrote as he announced his filing on Tuesday.

Loud is a social worker who unsuccessfully ran for the Democratic primary for Maine's 2nd congressional district.

"The grassroots movement in Maine is more powerful than ever, and we cannot afford to lose that momentum. This has always been about building a future where every Mainer has a voice and a seat at the table," Loud wrote as she launched her Senate bid.

Dickerson's LinkedIn page indicates she served as a state representative from 2012 through 2014, resigning from the Legislature and working as a teacher in Colorado from 2016 to 2020 before moving back to Maine.

"I believe in a world where everyone belongs, but the disparity between the rich and the poor keeps growing. I believe that with power, responsibility should follow," Dickerson wrote in explaining her Senate bid.
