Sierra Canyon continues to reload for boys basketball but despite several kids transferring in, there was a question on who will be the team’s point guard. That was answered Monday night with senior-to-be point guard Duane Washington confirming to The Athletic’s Brendan Quinn he is transferring in from Grand Rapids Christian in Michigan.

Washington is a 6-3 point guard who received an offer from Michigan on Monday. He’s also the fifth player to transfer to Sierra Canyon this summer following Cassius Stanley, Terren Frank, KJ Martin and 6-10 center Yanyu Liu from China.

Sierra Canyon graduated four of last year’s starters to Division 1 colleges and likely won’t have All-American Marvin Bagley back since he and his family are weighing options on whether or not to reclassify to the 2017 class and enroll in college. Reports have indicated that Bagley has already filed paperwork to reclassify but his family has not confirmed that.

What happens when go 30-1 over the last two seasons with two CIF Southern Section titles and a Division 2-A state title? If you’re Sierra Canyon, you plot an encore with a young but experienced group.

With a beefed up schedule and high expectations, things were loose but focused when I went to see Sierra Canyon. There were new faces with All-Area standouts Bobby Cole, Dylan Tait and Kanan Ray now in college. There was a QB battle with Mason Quandt and Johnny Hernandez.

We’ll have more on Sierra Canyon and the rest of our area’s best when we begin our Daily News Preseason Top 10 next week, starting on Wednesday. For now, enjoy the video interviews with JJ Hernandez, Ben Lee, Trevor Howarth and Michael Myrick.

With a month to go before the football season returns, the City Section announced it has created an Open Division that will take the eight best Division I teams and have them face off in the playoffs.

There are 24 Division I teams altogether and the remaining 16 will be a part of the Division I playoffs. It was a decision rumored since last spring and the City Section coaches voted on Saturday to approve the creation of the Open.

For state bowl purposes, there’s a catch to fulfill the City’s three automatic berths. While the Open Division champion automatically qualifies, there are multiple scenarios to figure out which team joins them. The Open Division runner-up would go to state only if the Division I champion did not defeat it during the regular season. If the D1 champion has a head to head advantage, they go to state instead of the Open runner-up.

The same applies to the Division II and Division III champion. If there is no head to head advantage with the D3 team, the D2 team automatically goes.

(Click below the jump to read our take)Our Take: I’ve personally been against this decision for a while. The idea of the Open came as a result of seeing Hawkins and Los Angeles dominate the lower divisions but since both schools 1) have been moved to Division I and 2) saw coaching chances and transfers that changed the makeup of their programs, this feels like some shortsighted coaches want a chance to win a title.

Another problem is finding eight quality teams to be in the Open. Last year’s quarterfinals saw three out of four winners score 41 or more points and win by double digits. So imagine how those first round Open games will go? Likely blowouts. Plus, what good is being the Division I champion if your trip to the state bowl games is not guaranteed unless you beat whoever the Open runner-up is.

Also, let’s not ignore the elephant in the room – Narbonne has dominated the City Section since 2011 so I have no doubt some teams want to avoid them.

My compromise is shrink Division I, send more teams to Division II and then let more teams compete for a title there. Take a note from the Southern Section – an Open Division possibly creates intrigue and discussion but it also hurts the lower division by taking away interest from the casual fan.

It would be quite the understatement to say the month of July is busy for Ryan Silver and his West Coast Elite Basketball grassroots company.

Silver has five huge events scheduled.

First up is the Chicago High-Academic Camp starting the day after we all celebrate our nation’s birthday.

The following week is a team tournament in Irvine July 12-16, an NCAA live-period event.

Silver then takes over Pomona July 19-23. July 19-21 will be another team tournament with more than 200 college coaches expected to attend just like a week earlier. July 21-23 is one of Silver’s crown jewels in his portfolio.

The Elite 100 camp is where over 300 individual student-athletes get areal chance to make their dreams come true with a possible college scholarship being offered. Silver loves this event because he can help in this process immensely.

The summer winds down with the High-Academic Super Bowl at Coronado High in Henderson, Nevada July 24-25.

Two days of hoops right before the final huge live-period starts.

“July is the biggest month and our biggest month,” Silver said. “We can really make connections with coaches for kids and lay the groundwork for September and into regular season for the kids to get offered scholarships at the right level. It’s great how we can help any kid at any level.”

There’s been rumors the past few weeks that Village Christian is cancelling its football season this fall. As of today, here’s what we know.

Athletic director Kevin Aust said Friday the season is not cancelled and the school is looking to find more players. According to several sources, the number of players in the program had dropped below 20 kids after having 50 kids on last year’s roster according to Maxpreps. Several kids have already transferred left and have enrolled at, among others, Crespi and St. Genevieve.

Even on Thursday, there were mixed messages being sent. One parent said that head coach Mark Bates told players Thursday the season was cancelled and another parent said the same on Twitter. A source close to the program said Thursday the season was in limbo but confirmed what Aust would later say today that a final decision has not been made.

Last year, Village Christian was 6-4 and was 1-3 in league play. Things seemed promising in the offseason after the school hired former Chaminade assistant (and LA City Section all-time leading rusher) to Milton Knox to coach the running backs. But now, things remain unclear if the Crusaders will have enough students to field a football team.

Village Christian had a successful spring with its baseball team reaching the second round of the playoffs and the softball team winning the Division 7 championship. But the school has also seen some shake-ups in other sports, with the basketball team seeing head coach Jon Shaw step down and multiple kids transfer – including Jordan and Caden Starr who arrived after a brief stay at Heritage Christian.

The postseason awards keep rolling in for Sierra Canyon’s Seth Stone.

The outstanding two-way player who was named first-team all-Gold Coast League can now add first-team all-Southern Section to his long list of major accomplishments.

Stone was Sierra Canyon’s only player chosen for the Div. 3 all-Southern Section first team by a panel of coaches.

The pick was a no-brainer. Stone had a stellar career with a 29-7 record on the mound, including a 1.87 ERA and 197 strikeouts.

Stone wasn’t too bad at the plate either. Stone batted .414 with 96 RBIs, 91 runs scored and finished with 122 hits.

High school will not be where it all ends for Stone. The right-hander is expected to be an important piece for Pomona-Pitzer next year.

Jacob H. Pollon
Special to CaliforniaPreps.com

SANTA ANA — The next chapter for Mater Dei point guard Spencer Freedman is all set.

The 6-foot signal caller will take his talents to the East Coast and play for Tommy Amaker at Harvard.

Bottom line: A great pick up for Harvard. A great school for Freedman. A great fit all-around for everyone involved.

Harvard gets a solid, polished hard-working guard who is wicked smart on the court and in the classroom.

Freedman gets to attend one of the most prestigious universities in the world and will develop into an impact player in the Ivy League.

Freedman’s journey began in elementary school and really took shape as a top junior high player. Freedman was sought after by several high schools and initially settled on Santa Monica High just steps from the Pacific Ocean for his freshman season.

After a solid ninth-grade year, Freedman opted for national power Mater Dei and has turned in two outstanding seasons, including being named Trinity League player of the year in 2017 and leading the Monarchs to the CIF Southern Section Open Division semifinals.

With his college choice all set, Freedman can now turn all attention to leading Mater Dei to another league championship and hopefully section and state titles.

Freedman will be a load to deal with this year because he has no distractions, college choice is done and he will be throwing the ball to 7-foot-1 prospect Bol Bol and a bevy of top outside shooters.

It’s summer break and the transfer winds are beginning to blow. Cassius Stanley posted a video on his Twitter today that was entitled new chapter and shows one of his patented high-flying dunks with the Sierra Canyon logo on the backboard.

It was the rising junior’s announcement that he had transferred in from Harvard-Westlake, where he led the Wolverines to the CIF Southern Section Division 1A championship last year. Stanley, an All-Area 1st team selection attended Sierra Canyon for middle school so the move is not a complete surprise. He also changed his Twitter profile to include Sierra Canyon

A source confirmed the news after Stanley’s video was posted but messages to Sierra Canyon coach Andre Chevalier or Stanley’s father were not returned.

There’s no secret Sierra Canyon has to reload after graduating four Division 1 bound seniors and reserve JoJo Wallace will be a preferred walk-on at UCLA after graduating early. Stanley’s high flying dunks and scoring potential should be a boost to the Trailblazers and who knows, maybe he finally tries out for baseball in his spare time.

Of course, the bigger question besides who else will transfer to Sierra Canyon is the status of rising senior Marvin Bagley III. There remains no word if Bagley, the nation’s No. 1 ranked player and reigning All-Area player of the year, will return to the school.
