NHL Rumour Round-Up Thursday Feb. 16 2012

2012-02-16T11:33:00.000-05:00

news from around the league today

Pavel Kubina has been held from practice and asked to give a list of teams he would be willing to accept a trade to. Kubina has a limited no trade clause, expect the Flyers, Rangers and Capitals to make a push.

Rick Nash talk continues to heat up with Los Angeles and Toronto making the most noise, Toronto I am told, has made an offer for Nash, could be just a starting point, as it will be a complicated deal to make.

Jeff Carter's name continues to come up, I have heard a couple sources name Toronto, but I am not sure I buy into it, the contract is out of Burke's comfort zone (as it is with many GM's) and CLB likely won't get market value for Carter due to his salary/injurie issues.

Luke Schenn was a healthy scratch last night vs Edmonton, and while I believe Schenn will be dealt before the deadline, the scratch was mainly due to his poor play recently.

Dustin Penner is drawing interest in the east, Montreal has had talks, as well as Washington & Pittsburgh.

More later, thanks for reading.

Tavares re-signs with Islanders for 6 Years

2011-09-15T10:55:00.000-04:00

John Tavares has re-signed with the New York Islanders for 6 years 33 Million.

The team has called a news conference for Thursday at which they are expected to officially announce the signing of the deal.

Tavares still has one year left on his entry-level contract and will earn $3.75 million this season including bonuses. His extension begins in 2012-13 at $4 million, and will pay $5 million the next season. The contract will pay $6 million in each of the final four seasons of the contract.

Tavares, who turns 21 next week, scored 29 goals and 38 assists last year in his second season with the Islanders. He was the first pick overall in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft and produced 24 goals and 30 assists in his rookie season.

Leafs/Kings sit on top of Richards Mountain

2011-07-01T20:45:00.001-04:00

Toronto and Los Angeles and are sitting atop of the rest in the race for Brad Richards as of near 9pm eastern on the first day of Free Agency.

Leafs leading the way in negotiations with Richards

Tampa has made it known they are no longer in the running due to the asking price, the New York Rangers have made it clear that they are still behind the offers of Toronto and Los Angeles and may not be willing to budge from their term.

it is believed that Toronto has offered a 5 year, 43 Million dollar contract to Richards, who may choose his destination as early as tonight.

Toronto looking at Stamkos Offer Sheet, Richards still in play

2011-07-01T19:32:00.000-04:00

Despite Brian Burke not being a big fan of the offer sheet route, the Toronto Brass can and will make an offer to Steven Stamkos, the likelyhood of Tampa matching are around 100%, but there is always that chance they don't.

Adding Steven Stamkos would make Toronto a legitimate playoff team and the 4 1st Rounders that it would cost to sign him, would likely end up being in the late teens to early 20's, which you do not find a player of Stamkos calibre.

Expect Toronto to make the play for Stamkos before Sunday.

Toronto is also very involved in the Brad Richards talks, the Leafs could conceivably afford both Richards and Stamkos.

NHL Playoffs Game 7 Predictions

2011-04-26T07:28:00.000-04:00

here are our official predictions @ NHL Hockey Rumorz.

Chicago @ Vancouver - Chicago advances: Vancouver is shell shocked right now and I think Chicago has gotten in their heads, Luongo either needs to win the Nucks a game or it's over, then heads will roll in Vancity.

Chicago Wins 4-3 in OT

Tampa Bay @ Pittsburgh - this is a tough one to call, but Pittsburgh pulls it out with a great effort from MA Fleury, I am skeptical to go against the Lightning Offense in this one, but not very skeptical about going against their defense

Pittsburgh wins 3-1

Buffalo @ Philadelphia - Ryan Miller shows the Flyers why having a capable goalie in the playoffs works, and not having one, doesn't.

Buffalo wins 2-1

Leafs present/future suddenly looking up

2011-03-05T10:02:00.000-05:00

If you were to take a look at Toronto's season ahead at the beginning of the year, coupled with the depth in their system, there wasn't much to be excited about if you are a Leafs' fan.

Today, things appear to be much different, and in a good way.

The team is currently 4 points out of the NHL playoffs with 18 games to go, trailing Carolina/New York and Buffalo, Carolina & New York appear to be sliding back a bit and although a tough schedule is ahead for Toronto, it is very achievable, which if you looked prior to the All-Star break, it was not.

Currently the team has a good young core at the NHL level, with Phaneuf, Kessel, Grabovski, MacArthur, Kulemin (who is quietly developing into a future Selke candidate), Aulie and Reimer, you could even throw Carl Gunnarsson into that group as well as he has lifted his play with the extra minutes since Kaberle's departure.

Now if you take all that and couple it with the AHL Marlies young guns who will likely be with the big club next season, add Nazem Kadri who is showing positive signs of breaking out, Joe Colborne who has been lighting it up with the Marlies so far, you now have 3 offensive centre's (Grabovski, Colborne, Kadri) one which will likely be shifted to the wing in the NHL (Colborne), a core of top 6 wingers to surround them, and a defensive group who is now showing signs of becoming what it was meant to be (and let's not forget the 1st Rounders Toronto now has).

The Play-offs may not come this year (a bonus if they do), but next year the Leafs could be a force to reckon with.

Something Leafs fans have not had the opportunity to claim since the early 2000's.

Leafs trade John Mitchell to New York Rangers

2011-02-28T15:05:00.001-05:00

Toronto has dealt current Marlies forward John Mitchell to the New York Rangers, believed to be a late pick in return.

Update: 7th Rounder as per Darren Dreger/TSN

Habs and Predators bidding on Penner

2011-02-28T12:58:00.002-05:00

Montreal and Nashville are currently bidding on Edmonton Power Forward Dustin Penner, Montreal would be very wise to add a player like Penner is it has aspirations of going deeper into the playoffs.

more to come.

Leafs looking for #1 Centre - Dangling Kadri

2011-02-28T09:43:00.000-05:00

Toronto has made it known that Nazem Kadri is available for a true #1 centre, Burke obviously is pushing the envelope as it doesn't look like Richards will be available on July 1st.

Toronto has Kadri, and (2) 1st Rounders in play in order to obtain the centre the covet, looking at Weiss, Stastny

Per: Howard Berger of FAN590 Liles could come cheap

2011-02-28T08:32:00.000-05:00

according to Howard Berger of the FAN590, Liles could come cheap to Toronto if Colorado ends up dumping salary, expect Burke to wait until final hours to make a pitch.
