In this post, I will show you how I created a large painting from beginning to end.

My canvas was primed with an ocher yellow layer before starting on the canvas.

Beforehand, numerous sketches took place.

The hardest part was to create a believable chariot.

Once I finished with many sketches, I transferred the main sketch to the canvas and started with the sky, and the underpainting.

The figures, chariot, and horses are entirely worked in raw umber and white.

The background consisting of the sky and the road and field are established first.

At this point, colors are glazed on top. This process takes long hours in front of the canvas, painting.

There are many steps to finishing a painting. You can compare some of those stages to those earlier steps.

This was my third version of this painting. Two of them found a home.

This painting illustrates a pastime of Lord Chaitanya described in the Chaitanya Charitamrita.
After some time Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu again started on His tour towards northern India, and He decided to visit Vṛndāvana and its neighboring places. He passed through the jungles of Jharikhaṇḍa (Madhya Bhārata), and all the wild animals also joined His saṅkīrtana movement. The wild tigers, elephants, bears, and deer all together accompanied the Lord, and the Lord accompanied them in saṅkīrtana. By this, He proved that by the propagation of the saṅkīrtana movement (congregational chanting and glorifying of the name of the Lord) even the wild animals can live in peace and friendship, and what to speak of men who are supposed to be civilized.

This painting is painted in a classical style using the Venitian painters techniques such as Titian, the medieval Renaissance Italian artist. I am here to show you the step by step process to realize it.

I have always begun such an elaborate composition with numerous sketches.

Here is the final sketch ready to be transferred to the canvas:

In this sketch, you can already see how the composition revolves around lord Chaitanya and how the arm and the elephant trump circle high above his head.

The Steps for the Acrylic layer.

My canvas was toned first with a Venitian red and I started with the black outlines of the painting and the lights are appearing as well as the shadows, painted afterward.

Everything is established from the beginning, the light and dark tones and more. This is the acrylic layer before it was scumbled.

The scumbling is done with white acrylic paint. You will see how the thin layer of white has created some beautiful grays. That is the whole idea for using that red earth color. Once scrambled, it creates incredible gray tones and you can establish beautiful tones on top of that. In the end, the colors will vibrate with a lot of depths from that technique.

The Steps for the oil layer.

This is the first oil paint layer. I go slowly on colors avoiding strong colors at first. Notice how I treat the figure. It is painted in a gray layer at first, to establish the form and to intensify his luminous body.

The gray layer is applied to the skin colors. All the layers are glazed step by step.

Now more colors and details come. Notice how carefully I treat the figure, using glazed tones.

More colors, more details are applied until I am satisfied with the result. Compare this to the final product above.

The Process for creating an oil painting of "Vishnu, Shiva, and Brahma", a classical approach by Dominique Amendola

This painting is painted in a classical style using the Venitian painters techniques such as Titian, the medieval Renaissance Italian artist. It represents Lord Brahma explaining the Vedas or the mystical nature of the Absolute to Lord Shiva taking his inspiration from Lord Vishnu. The Vedic scriptures are the spiritual texts of Ancient India, written in the Sanscrit language.

In this painting, I have used the scumbling method in the underpainting mostly. The underpainting is executed with acrylics. It helps to establish the foundation for the whole artwork. I have my own way to paint and I am not claiming this is a demo for the Venetian technique of the Renaissance. However, I really think it is close to it, with the difference that for their underpainting, they used tempera.

I have always begun such an elaborate composition with numerous sketches. This is a commissioned artwork for the publication of one of the Upanishads, a Vedic text of ancient India.

Here are the first few steps:

I first figure out the basic composition. This sketch looks like nothing, but it has the correct ratio for my final painting, and the composition is based on the golden section.

Each figure will then be elaborately sketched and the background studied.

This is an example of how the sketch for Brahma progressed.

Shiva and Visnu came next.

Even so, you can see very little of Shiva's chair in the final painting, I designed it entirely so I could cover it with a tiger skin in a believable manner.

The tiger skin took many shapes, but in the end, I used my imagination to make it look believable.

After many steps, the sketch was ready to be transferred on the canvas.

I also produced a tone sketch and a color sketch before starting to paint so that I knew clearly where the light would fall and how the colors would go.

The Steps for the Acrylic layer.

My canvas was toned first with a Venitian red.

This a large painting. I first transferred the final sketch to the toned canvas. Then started to establish the values. As you can see, because the canvas is toned with a dark color, I start with the lights.

This is the acrylic layer before it was scumbled. The scumbling is done with white and I do not show that step. but if you enlarge the cloud where Vishnu lies, you will see how the thin layer of white has created some beautiful grays. That is the whole idea for using that red earth color. Once scrambled, it creates incredible gray tones and you can establish your gray layer on top of that. In the end, the colors will vibrate with a lot of depths from that technique.

I kept Lord Vishnu blurred because He belongs to Lord Brahma's vision.

This was sketched on paper first, it is not a photo taken in the street, but a scene created to show romantic India as the past meets the future. Some men and women in traditional garments are crossing the street among cars and rickshaws. In the background, the trees are decorated with colorful flowers. It is painted in an impressionist style.

This painting, (oil on canvas), was painted in California. Why do I choose linen canvas over cotton? Linen canvas will last hundreds of years, while cotton is fated to rot within 50 years. Cotton is also more susceptible to humidity and the painting layer will crack more easily.

I decided to produce several landscape paintings.

This is painted during late spring while many people are taking advantage of nature and smelling the roses. This is painted in several layers in an impressionist style. This artwork is framed in an ornate gold frame. With the frame, the artwork measures 26" x 30" and is ready to hang.

Now I am going to show you the different steps which created this new painting:

I first blocked in the mass of colors with no details.

My brush strokes are small and do not cover all the background primed with ochre yellow.

I continue with refining the painting. In the end, I decided to go for a reddish gazebo roof.

This painting, (oil on canvas), was painted in Vermont.

This is one of my more recent landscapes.

After I left India, I found myself without a studio. With the generosity of many people, I was able to at least acquire some paints and canvases.

I travel a lot. Now I am in Vermont with its green hills and beautiful landscapes. It is very difficult to catch the special light at dusk when a storm is on its way and the sun is still illuminating things. A farmhouse is standing in the background, some trees with the classic red tinges of Fall are framing the painting. This painting is framed in a plein air gold frame and ready to hang.
Someone asked me how am I to paint Vermont rolling hills after painting India? It is natural to paint with one's environment. I could not paint India in Vermont and Vermont in India. That would not yield very good results.

This painting, (oil on linen canvas), was painted in Paris, France.

Actually, I started this painting a year ago and had to let it sit for a long time because I got so many art commissions.
It is executed with a soft style, with several layers of glazes. The scene is interesting to look at because there is so much interaction going on.

It depicts a cafe scene in Paris. Les Deux Magots is one of the most famous cafe located in the quarters of Saint-Germain-Des-Pres. It once had a reputation as the rendezvous of the literary and intellectual lite of the city. It is now a popular tourist destination.
There is a lot happening in this scene: 3 couples are prominent, as well as the waiter and a woman cutting cake with a fork. From left to right, there is the old guy reading the newspaper with a bored blond. A woman with glasses is cutting a piece of cake, also reading the paper. The waiter is taking another couple's order with a guy squinting and deciding what he wants to order. There is the couple on the right with the talkative guy in red, while his girl friend is checking her phone. In the back ground various people are doing what we all do in a cafe, trying to enjoy a drink or something and soaking the atmosphere. The inside of the cafe is quite dark by contrast, but here and there, the lights are on.

Now I am going to show you details of this new painting:

He is reading the newspaper, she is just waiting.

She is cutting a piece of cake with her fork, eating while reading the paper.

The waiter is busy attending a couple and carrying many orders.

He is talking animately while she is checking her phone.

It is difficult to see the softness of the artwork with photos but here are a couple details which give an idea of this work.

Sri Ram Embracing Hanuman

This painting, (oil on canvas) was commissioned by an Hindhu gentleman. He desired Ram to show His love for Hanuman.

In the great epic scripture “The Ramayan” the story of Ram and Hanuman is depicted. Hanuman is presented as the ideal servant of The Supreme Lord Ramachandra. In this painting Lord Ram is embracing His friend Hanuman.
This was commissioned by a Hindhu art collector. This painting is very classical in the Hindhu tradition.
In this painting, Lord Ram is wearing his courtly attire, such as a crown studded with jewels, beautifully embroidered silks, and gold jewelry studded with precious stones.
Hanuman is also displaying great opulence in his attire.
Hanuman is representing the faithful servant dedicating to Ram without reservations. Ram is representing the ideal king adhering strictly to moral principles and one who puts duty and country above all other duties.
This was painted in a very classical style as well, with over ten layers of glazing, as the old masters used to do. If I had to dedicated this artwork to anyone, I would dedicate it to Titian, who advised his students to paint with at least 30 layers of glaze.

The figures ended up being almost life-size on the canvas and I got inspired to paint with many glazes. I must have had 12 layers of glazes on this artwork.

This painting, (oil on canvas) was commissioned me from a very old, very ancient temple in Vrindavan India, called Radha Damodara. I painted it "on the house" because they are a temple where tens of Thousands of pilgrims will see my art daily.Anyway, they actually only needed a print of it. Original art would not survive the harsh climate of the region. A print can be reprinted again and again as needed.

The sketch stage is very important for each artwork.

The difficulty in this sketches is that my client insisted on a square composition which is very

unusual.

In this sketch I gave Damodara another crown according to what He was wearing at the temple that day, but ended up changing it in the final sketch, as seen above.

Sketch for Sanatana

This composition is actually very simple. A square composition is unusual. But this composition was requested by my client, so I complied, but personally I would not choose a square canvas.

However, with all those art commissions, I am rediscovering the imagined painting, with no models to copy from. Sanatana is completely invented not taken from anything.

This painting, (oil on canvas) is the first one of a series of three. This was commissioned me from a very old, very ancient temple in Vrindavan India, called Radha Damodara. I did it pro-bono and they actually only needed a print. Two more paintings will follow this one. I am just making the sketch for the next one.
However, the sketch stage is very important for each artwork.
Here is the sketch for this painting:

In this composition, the eyes goes directly in the middle of the picture. The composition is square. This is not my choice. A square composition is difficult and unusual. But this composition was requested by my client. The tree and Mahaprabhu are the center of the picture. However, I displaced the tree a bit so it does not look like it is growing out of Mahaprabhu's head, obviously. Further, in the final artwork the tree is faded and Mahapabhu sharper. ( See the final painting above).

This artwork takes its inspiration from Indian style artworks. Since I was doing the painting for a renown Indian temple, I used the classical Indian style. Those Indian artists who paint in that style usually use water color as their medium, but some of the artists used oils too.

This a painting by B.G. Sharma executed in water colors and very fine pigments.

This a painting by Raja Ravi Varma executed in oils. Raja means king and yes, this artist was also a king.

Those two artists are very famous indian artists.

Climbing Roses in La Treille Courtyard

This canvas was painted in Provence, in one of those small villages, in a courtyard called "La Treille". La Treille became famous as the place where writer Marcel Pagnol spent his summer holidays during his childhood—at the Bastide Neuve, where he is buried in the cemetery there. It is a very romantic place full of old stones and flowers.
In this painting, two rose bushes have climbed towards each other forming a sort of arch. The style is impressionist, the colors are soothing. The composition is a bunch of intricate squares:

In this composition, the eyes goes directly in the middle of the picture. The composition is formed of sections. And the roses are forming an arch leading your eyes into the sides of the picture.

You can see how the colors are established as well as the general shapes. But no details are painted yet.

Roses are cascading from bushes in a luxuriant garden. There are white roses, red roses and pink roses. The picture is painted in an impressionist style reminiscent of Monet's style. This artwork was painted in California in a beautiful rose garden.

This painting was executed in India as the previous ones were too, right in the backyard of Ganjam village near the famous Srirangapatna town, just when Spring was beginning.
This is an oil painting on linen canvas which is a much stronger canvas than cotton and which last much longer.
The painting makes you feel like you are taking a walk in the South Indian countryside. On the left is a path used mostly by farmers to go take care of their fields. They walk or go on a bicycle and water each plant individually with a water pot plunged into the canal waters. On the right is the canal water with a little bridge to cross over.

This painting was executed in India as the previous ones were too.
In this painting many Indian citizens are heading towards the market, Muslins and Hindus have the same purpose: to get groceries, fruits and vegetables. On the right side, a mosque is represented, usually painted in green as seen here.
On the foreground some motorcycle riders are poised at the intersection. You can see on the right, a muslin couple, on the left the typical south indian Hindu couple.
The composition is complex, almost divided in two halves: on the right the mosque and the muslin couple on a motorcycle, on the left the traditional hindus on their motorcycle rides.
It becomes all mixed up in the back where the crowd is hurrying towards the market street or coming out loaded with shopping bags. As far as the linear composition goes, the figures on the left are inviting us within the painting on a diagonal, while the muslin couple as well as the buildings in the background are forming an horizontal line, stabilising the composition.

The people's expression is important in this piece. The very hardworking rickshaw driver, the old lady looking suspiciously at the unusually bedecked girl on the side. What is she doing there at the corner, all alone? Waiting for clients? And the monkey on the ledge? See it below:

This painting started with many sketches, focusing on getting the sunset colors right, and developing some pedestrians walking leisurely on the sides. I wanted to have traditional India represented, not just some tourists in shorts with their cameras.

As you can see the figures are a bit romanticized with traditional Indian dresses. Nowadays Indian people have lost their traditional customs. They wear pants and shirts, even young ladies. However, the traditional sari and punjabi is still worn extensively by Indian women.

The Taj is a marble monument, and it reflects the warm sunset tones very well. In the following detail pictures, you can see how everything is bathed in an yellow/orange light.

'Here comes the sun', sings George Harrison on a happy tune. When I saw the girl on the porch with her guitar, I had to paint her. Her hair was very thick, golden and curly_just lovely. I painted this piece on quality linen canvas. First I went for sketches. Below, you can see the final sketch. What are sketches good for? First they help solving the problem of composition, light and dark before going on the canvas. Then the shapes get refined to what is needed. A sketch will take just a few days at most, while a painting can take several months. This particular painting took me three months to complete. You can see in the sketch I am solving a lot of problems. This sketch becomes a reference point even when the model is absent.

After the sketches the painting itself starts in earnest. However, in this case, I painted an underpainting of grisaille first. That means that with very few colors, the painting is established. In this case, I used only raw umber and white. Then the final colors are glazed on this underpainting, after it is very dry. It is best to wait several days, depending on the medium used. The advantage of the grisaille technique is that at first, the artist only worries about shapes and values.

Yamaraja answers the questions of Nachiketa

This is a commissioned painting destined to illustrate the Katha Upanishad. The story goes that Nachiketa, a brahmin boy, went to Yamaraja's abode, Death's home, but the god was out, and he waited three days. When Yamaraja returned, he was sorry to see that a Brahmin guest had been waiting so long. He told Nachiketa, "You have waited in my house for three days without hospitality, therefore ask three boons of me". Nachiketa first asked for peace between his father and himself. Next, Nachiketa wished to learn the art of performing fire sacrifice, for his third boon, Nachiketa asked to learn the mystery of what comes after death.
Yama was reluctant to answer this question; he said that this had been a mystery to everyone. He asked Nachiketa to ask for some other boon, and offered many material gains.

But Nachiketa replied that material things will last only till the morrow. He who has encountered Death personally, how can he desire wealth? No other boon would do. Yama was secretly pleased with this disciple, and elaborated on the nature of the true Self, which persists beyond death. The key of self realization is that this Self (within each person) is one and different from the Supreme Lord, the vital force in the universe. Yama's explanation focuses on the following points:

The sound Om is the syllable of the supreme Brahman (Absolute Truth).The Vedanta-sutra says that Brahman is that from which everything emanates. It is that which maintains everything then re-absorbs it all, the ultimate source of all energies. There are many controllers or gods of very specific powers, but the Absolute Truth is one without a second.
The Soul, whose is the same as the omnipresent Brahman, but also different_smaller in quantity but same in quality.
The goal of the wise is to know the nature of the soul and the difference between soul and super soul.
After death, it is the Soul that remains; the soul is immortal.
Mere reading of the scriptures or intellectual learning cannot help realize the soul.
One must discriminate between the soul and the body, which is the seat of desire.
Inability to realize Brahman (Absolute Truth) results in one being enmeshed in the cycle of rebirths. Understanding the Self leads to liberation and freedom from this material world.
Thus having learnt the wisdom of the Brahman from Yama, Nachiketa was freed from the cycle of birth and death.

For this elaborate painting commissioned for a book called the Katha Upanishad, I started with a sketch. actually I worked on many sketches, and below you can see the final sketch:

Once I am satisfied with the sketch, I transfer it to the canvas. In this case I had to follow guidelines where Yamaraja is described as having a greenish skin, wearing jewelry like a king, his cloth being red, holding a special scepter and Nachiketa being a brahmin boy wearing simple cloth and a few beads. It is not always easy to have to describe such things in a painting. Yamaraja abode is dark and forbidding. In order tp render this I try to convey this in the background, since he is living in a palace but he is the god of death after all....

This is the painting photographed about half way done. You can see that there is not so much contrast, yet. Everything is starting to take shape and the focus is to keep everything balanced.

Three guys with a dog

This painting came as a result of seeing a nineteen century painting of a streetscene with a lot of life in it. It was not a famous painting, but it was large, perhaps 3 times larger than Three guys with a dog. I saw it in a museum in France, and did not get an image of it. But shortly afterwards I visited the port of La Rochelle and was inspired to paint a street scene there.
At first I created a study for this painting of 11" x 14". Here it is below:

In France, everybody is smoking in the streets and my red jacket man is holding a cigarette. But in the final painting, I made this inauspicious item disappear:

You can see that in the final rendition, the cigarette is gone. You can also notice how there are more details in the final painting and things are more three dimensional.

Having done a study for this painting, the final painting came easily. When I have a complicated composition, this is usually my routine: I paint a full color study, after creating many sketches.

And of course the hero of the painting, the dog, is well described as seen below:

Bird watching by the creek

My painting, "Bird watching by the creek" is actually a sort of excuse for painting a figure in nature. The colors and the facture are very impressionistic. The colors are cool mostly, except for the T-shirt which has a warm color, matching the hair of the subject. She is turning her back to us, and we can barely see her face leaving her features to our imagination, the same way we do not see any birds in this picture. She is watching and waiting quietly for water fowls but this is also left to the imagination.

The weather is uncertain making the light cool also.

In some of his paintings with figures standing in nature, Monet shows us the same type of tones, mostly cool ones, painted in nature:

For the execution of "Bird watching by the creek", I used a palette knife. Painting with a knife is a completely different technique than painting with a brush. With a palette knife, I feel I can "dance" on the canvas and I am not able to express much details, which leaves room for more spontaneity.

You can see the stokes in these examples being painted boldly. Shapes are evoked but not described. They look like what they represent (grass. leaves) but it is only an impression. This is what impressionism means_giving an impression.

The term 'Impressionist' was first used as an insult in response to an exhibition of new paintings in Paris in 1874. A diverse group of painters, rejected by the art establishment, defiantly set up their own exhibition. They included Monet, Renoir, Pissarro and Degas.

An impressionist painting is executed outdoors rather than in the studio, or done from life, not from a photo or sketches.

The making of "the street guitarist" Oil painting by Dominique Amendola

The street guitarist

I used to take shots of people in the street and this guitarist was playing in California, trying his best to look and sound like Bob Dylan. That afternoon, he was sitting in front of a wall with his guitar case opened. I decided to make a painting of him. Again, this is a quick painting, executed in a day, spontaneous, Alla Prima. I first created a color sketch. The dominant color was going to be pale yellow akin to the sunlight; a cool morning sun, while the musician's face of a ruddy complexion shows how much time he spends outdoors.
Music is always a winning subject matter and since I had created a previous painting with musicians, this one was also going to keep in the same mood. The style is impressionistic, I gave myself three hours to finish the actual 8" x 10 "painting!

You can see that this is executed boldly with thick paint, quickly.

I paint from the life model once a week, and this is important to understand how to paint from a photo or from imagination. There is the understanding of the different planes and what makes a volume. And there is the understanding of the correct colors applied rapidly without much preparation. Therefore, the painting comes out more spontaneously.

I framed this painting in a very classical frame, especially suited for impressionism. At the Orsay museum in Paris, a whole floor is dedicated to the impressionists. The frames used are varied but the above type of frame is the most common. Below you can see one of Renoir's beautiful still life framed in this frame genre.
