Another painting in our "A Sense of Place" series. It depicts a group of women as they inspect the pears coming in for packing. I was struck by the brilliant green of the pears and the intensely bright light shining over them contrasted with the browns and greys of the surroundings. Here's the next installment of the artwork for "A Sense of Place", a depiction of a foreman on a farm that raises horseradish in the Klamath Basin. Behind him is the machinery he uses to dig with. He was so great to talk to, explaining alot to me about growing the crop and also freely discussing his life and the good fortune he's found. He may have found good fortune, but it's clear he's worked hard for it too!

This is another painting for an upcoming show depicting the land and people in different parts of rural Oregon and northern California. The subject here is the "Pie-Lady" at Apple Valley Store in the Hood River Valley as she makes some apple/berry pies. She said that she probably made 3500 pies in 2010! Wow! The store is wonderful! They sell jellies, jams and other condiments they produce along with amazing pear dumplings and a big variety of pies from locally grown fruit.

Holidays are past and life is getting a bit back to normal and for me that means getting back to painting! This is another painting for our "rural life reflections" project. The setting is a packing house in the Hood River Valley that is owned by one of the larger orchardists in the area. I asked and found out that a big farm as far as orchards go is 500 acres. That was interesting to me, as a big ranch in SE Oregon could be 25,000 acres, and a big farm in the Klamath Basin could be a couple of thousand. . .everything is relative!

The word "determination" kept going through my mind as I painted this--the horse was determined to lose the rider and the rider determined to stay on for the full 8 seconds! I don't really remember the result, just the lesson!

The scene of this little painting is at the Met in NYC. I was so struck by the light in this space--absolutely beautiful, lots of shadows and contrast. Too, I really noticed the contrast of the sculptures perched unmoving on their pedastals with the people walking through the place. Quite a juxtaposition of energies! I used a different palette of colors for this painting: yellow ochre, raw sienna, Indian red, burnt umber, ivory black, chromatic black and white. It's amazing the beautiful array of colors you can get out of that and almost ideal for this subject. I'm afraid my photo isn't picking up the warming tones of the painting--the lights have alot of warmth to them.

One of the things I love abouty Bend is the swans that live here. Everytime I see them on a walk, it just does something to bring the specialness of the day up a notch. This painting is in a lovely wood frame that looks like hammered copper. It was difficult to capture it in a photo, but I think this gives the idea.

At this time of year, the galleries are asking for small "treasures" for their holiday shows. I've been really attracted to butterflies lately and have been making other small paintings of them that could be tree ornaments. This one, however, I painted to fit the frame. And, if I do say so myself, though it is tiny, it's stunning!

KC is another one of the dogs that we see alot of at the dog park. He is so much fun to watch--he doesn't run, he "gallumphs" and I think he could chase balls all day if he had the chance. A very sweet and huge standard poodle that we all have a soft spot for. I like using limited palettes and I had been given some Maimeri Puro oils that I used for this: primary cyan, primary yellow and primary red. I also used radiant white and ivory black.

I painted a portrait of this lovely lady last April (posted here on April 21) and was asked to do another one so both of her children could have one. I was given two photos of her to work with for the 1st painting and chose what I liked best from each to make a painting I thought would work well. Then the opportunity came to paint the second one and I ended up taking what I hadn't used before to paint this one. It has made for two distinctly different portraits--not only in appearance, but also in mood. Fortunately, everyone is happy with both and I had a great experience doing them.

On Saturday, we took another trip north to the Hood River Valley getting more inspiration for paintings for the Rural Life Reflections project. What a gorgeous day! The colors of the changing trees was awesome, temps in the upper 60's-low 70's and skies a mixture of rain clouds and sun. This little painting comes from a farm I hadn't previously visited also had a corn maze (maize maze?) along with lots of things to keep the kids busy having fun.

As part of the Reflections on Rural Life project, we are visiting people, businesses and orchards in the Hood River Valley in north-central Oregon. Such a beautiful spot! Marcia, the pie-maker at Apple Valley Store, graciously agreed to let us photograph and paint her. She made 3500 pies last year!
