Anthropic Loses a Round With the Pentagon

Reuters reports a federal appeals court declined to block the Pentagon’s national-security supply-chain-risk designation for Anthropic. Microsoft’s Cloud Lesson for Nonprofits

The Register reports Microsoft is telling nonprofit and education community users that deleted Microsoft 365 data from retired tenants cannot be recovered. Microsoft says it warned users ahead of the August 6th shutdown, but some groups still missed the deadline, which is a painful reminder that even free cloud services need backups.

OpenAI halts training of latest models as reports mount of AI agents going rogue

OpenAI announced the company is pausing training of its AI models amid more reports of agents causing incidents in unexpected ways. In a statement to press OpenAI stated training will resume “only when we are confident that we have additional safeguards” and added that the company expects it may have to “hit pause” in the future as other issues surface. This is the second time OpenAI ‘hit pause’ on development in the last three months. The first time was in July with the revelation of the Hugging Face incident.

Apple faces $5.7 billion patent infringement verdict over iPhone and Apple Watch haptics

On Friday a federal jury awarded Taction Technology approximately $5.7 billion USD in damages, finding that Apple infringed on two of the company’s patents . Taction filed suit against Apple in 2021 in the US District Court for the Southern District of California, alleging Apple’s devices infringed on patents related to vibration technology. Apple got the case dismissed in 2023, but the Federal Circuit later revived the case. Apple told CNBC, “Apple’s Taptic Engine is fundamentally different from Taction’s technology, which Taction’s own testing of Apple’s products confirmed during trial. Apple does not use Taction’s technology, and we will appeal.”

Walmart chief rules out personalised pricing as AI transforms retail

President and CEO of Walmart Inc., John Furner, published a public letter promising not to use personal data for setting retail prices for individual customers. The Financial Times notes the letter was posted the day public comments were due on a new enforcement policy proposed by the US FTC, which had warned businesses that customers need to be informed on how their data is being used to affect pricing or the company could be breaking the law.

TikTok agrees to pay at least $100M in Alabama settlement

On Friday, Alabama’s Attorney General announced a settlement with TikTok, days before a trial was scheduled to begin in a Montgomery state court. The settlement requires the platform to implement improved safety features, including: a 2-hour daily time limit, pauses after 15 minutes of use, stricter age verification, a “blanket prohibition on the use of cosmetic filters by teen users”, and restricted nighttime access and notifications during school hours, among others. Also as part of the settlement, TikTok will pay Alabama a minimum of $100 million USD, which could balloon up to $300 million, if, according to Reuters, 40 other attorneys general sign on to similar agreements with the company ​within a specified timeframe.

Microsoft pauses KB5002907 update after Office license deactivations

Microsoft paused the rollout of the KB5002907 optional update after reports it unexpectedly deactivated or completely uninstalled perpetual versions of Office 2016 and Office 2019. Microsoft confirms affected Office installations can suffer from two different problems. One, Office may appear unlicensed after the update and Microsoft recommends that customers reactivate their purchase. And two, as a ‘rare case’ Office may be entirely removed. Those users are instructed to download and reinstall their purchased copy of Office 2016 or Office 2019 to get themselves sorted.

Microsoft Excel can now put multiple values in a single cell

In what could someday possibly be the biggest addition to Microsoft Excel since Pivot Tables, an opt-in feature currently rolling out to Microsoft Excel Beta Channel users enables a single spreadsheet cell to hold multiple values at the same time. With it, if someone wanted to type in a bunch of items separated by commas, Excel would no longer treat that all as a solid block, but see them individually inside that single block. Microsoft stresses the behaviour of this feature may change prior to being made generally available and recommends against using it in important workbooks at this time.

To put on my Game Reviewer’s hat for a sec: Castlevania still plays as it ever does, but keep your expectations low for the polish or lack-thereof on this port. Gemini Agents Get a Face

Qualcomm Is Making Two Versions of Its Flagship Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Chip

Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, able to handle AI tasks on device, built on TSMC’s 2-nanometer manufacturing process. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 has an eight-core Oryon CPU composed of two prime cores with clock speeds of up to 5 GHz, 16 MB of Flex Cache, and the Adreno GPU is 35% faster than last gen, and the NPU (neural processing unit) 14% faster. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6’s GPU is 44% faster, 40% more efficient, and runs 30B-parameter AI models on-device, with 8K60fps video, a first for a phone.

Western Australia to Ban Smart Glasses in Public Schools

Beginning October 12th, 2026, Western Australia is banning all smart glasses from public schools following a directive issued by the state’s education minister. The order specifically instructs principals to ensure staff and students do not wear, use, charge, or even store any smart glasses on the premises, like in a locker. Principals need to post a notice of the ban visible by all, and further ensure that parents, visitors, and contractors are aware of and follow the ban. Exemptions may be granted for “school approved medical, accessibility or assistive technology purposes”.

OpenAI Gives Cyber Defence Tools to Ukraine

OpenAI will share Daybreak, its AI cyber defence system with Ukraine’s government, for free, in order to help the nation better defend civilian infrastructure, like hospitals and power plants against digital attacks. The Computer Emergency Response Team of Ukraine reported approximately 6,000 such attacks in 2025. The deal gives Ukraine access to OpenAI’s GPT 5.6 Sol model.

UK Competition Watchdog Wants to Give Android and Chrome Users More Search Engine Choices

The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) proposed Android smartphone and Chrome users be given the ability to select a preferred search engine at launch so Google isn’t used automatically. It also recommends a yearly prompt to users in case they want to change a selection over time. The CMA also wants to require search providers to give clearer attribution to publisher content when shown through AI assistance and summaries. These proposals are in line with measures recommended earlier in 2026. Europe already mandated smartphone makers give users a search engine and browser choice when first setting things up.

US Rebukes Australia for Plan to Target Social Media Algorithms

The US government criticized Australia’s proposed social media algorithm changes, which would give users options regarding the content shown on their feeds, specifying the US could view these impositions as “facilitating censorship.” When asked about this criticism, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese noted the measures are intended to restore individuals’ control over their content choices and not intended to grant the government sole authority over decision making. The “Digital Duty of Care” bill is expected to be introduced in parliament later in 2026.

LinkedIn Adds More Profile Verifications to Combat AI-Powered Job Scams

On Wednesday, LinkedIn announced new tools to better fight against fake accounts and identities used for scams. Users will be able to vouch for the experiences of colleagues and classmates in a system separate from the existing endorsement one. To make the system less easy to be gamed, the voucher must already have a verified profile, have two-factor authentication enabled, and be connected to the person for at least a year. Businesses will have new controls to manage who associates with their brand, allowing companies to remove accounts falsely claiming employment experience from appearing on their page. This does not automatically alter the user’s profile; that work experience would no longer appear as verified.

Microsoft Wants to Show You Ads Between Boss Fights

Microsoft filed a patent named “contextually aware management of interactive software application access” which described being able to pause a game at the OS level and display “audiovisual promoted content”, more colloquially referred to as ‘advertisements’. Watching the “audiovisual promoted content” would grant the user a credit that could be used to access the game for a limited amount of time, from 15 minutes to an hour. Filing for a patent does not guarantee the feature will be released at any point, but this follows the announcement earlier in September that reduced the number of monthly hours available for Xbox Cloud Gaming for all Game Pass plans, with the Ultimate tier getting limited to 15 hours.

Riot Is Delaying Voice Chat for League of Legends

And two weeks after Riot’s announcement that voice chat would be available to more than just pre-made teams in League of Legends, the dev team shared that the feature has been delayed. On X, the @LoLDev account said on Tuesday it “made the call to push it to meet the quality bar you deserve. No new target patch to share yet, but we’re making this a priority to get right.”

Meta’s Agent Hits Number One

Meta’s personal AI agent Muse climbed to the top of Apple’s US App Store free charts, passing ChatGPT a little over a week after launch. It can research, shop, book reservations, fill out forms, and connect to services like email, calendars, Spotify, Instagram, and OpenTable, assuming users are comfortable giving Meta that much context.

Snap launches $2,195 Specs smart glasses

Snap launched its augmented reality glasses, Specs, which it first revealed at the Augmented World Expo in June. There are two sizes, 47mm and 52mm, with a 51 degree field of view, and are twice as heavy as Meta display frames at 132 grams. Specs do not need to be connected to any other device and can be run standalone. Battery life is advertised as 4 hours of mixed usage with video and audio playback. Specs are available for pre-order now for $2,195, with a $200 deposit, expected to ship out in the United States, United Kingdom, and France sometime in the fall of 2026.

Snap is launching a new Specs AI tool, and it’s coming to iOS and Mac

Launching alongside Specs, Snap is introducing a new AI assistant called “Specs Intelligence”. The AI assistant can connect with other digital accounts and is billed as an “anticipatory AI service” able to keep track of what needs attention in order to “make progress toward your longer-term goals.” Specs Intelligence is currently available in preview on iOS and there’s a waitlist for the “full early-access experience” coming to Mac. Snap did not clarify how the preview and full experiences will differ.

EU Could Require Age Verification to Stop Under 15s Opening Social Media Accounts

On Thursday, the European Union’s formerly presented a “Kids Act” that would ban children under 13 from accessing social media entirely, set a minimum EU-wide age of 15 for minors to be able open their own accounts, though minors between 13 and 15 would be able to set up limited accounts through a parent or guardian’s account. The pillars of the “safety-by-design” section are: no addictive design features like push features or infinite scroll, safer algorithm for children to discourage “rabbit holes”, no ability for minors to livestream, and improved parental control option. Age assurance verification methods would include the EU age verification tool or third-party solutions.

After fallout with Chinese parent, chipmaker Nexperia partners with India’s Tata

On Thursday, Dutch chipmaker Nexperia announced a partnership with Indian multinational conglomerate Tate Group with ‌Tata Electronics to manufacture and package computer chips in India. This continues the split of Nexperiea from its Chinese parent Wingtech. Nexperia would work with Tata at the $11 billion dollar plant Tata is building in Dholera. The companies will also being cooperating on ​testing and assembling chips at Tata’s packaging facility in Jagiroad and other future technology development projects. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Google ‘AI contribution pilot’ tests paying websites when they’re used in AI results

Digiday reports Google is running a new “AI contribution pilot” with dozens of “small and mid-sized” publishers, and not just for predominately news-based sites. The reporting notes those in the pilot have a panel in Google Search Console with a payout figure, and the panel explains the process as “Accumulate earnings when your content contributes significantly to AI-generated responses in participating products.” This program was first mentioned publicly in June 2026.

OpenAI tests advertiser-sponsored agents, expands AI tools for ChatGPT ads

OpenAI is testing an ad format within ChatGPT called “Sponsored Agents”. This enables interactions with “a conversation with a business-sponsored agent after clicking an ad in ChatGPT”. These interactions will be clearly labelled and not mixed in with ChatGPT’s answers. The feature is currently being tested with select advertisers and only in the United States.
