Apple might soon make App Store changes to raise revenue, increase margins: report

In Bloomberg’s Power On newsletter, Mark Gurman reports Apple is considering tweaks for the App Store in order to “figure out ways to raise margins and squeeze additional recurring revenue from the platform”. Gurman states any changes would be a result by a push by new CEO John Ternus and senior vice president of services Eddy Cue. Reportedly, the push for these changes contributed to the departure of longtime Apple exec Phil Schiller, who disagreed with this approach. 9to5Mac notes possible ways to increase potential revenue include raising the price of the $99/year developer membership fee and possibly charging large developers fees based on traffic in order to offset infrastructure costs.

Musk’s xAI loses court bid to block Minnesota’s AI ‘nudification’ ban

In Minnesota, xAI’s second preliminary injunction filing against the state’s ban on AI-generated fake nude images was denied by US District Judge Donovan Frank. In the September 4th decision, Frank wrote “xAI has not demonstrated irreparable harm and the balance of harms tips steeply in favor of the State”. xAI claims the measure infringes upon free speech rights granted by the US Constitution and Minnesota argues the law is narrowly defined to curb spread of AI-generated non-consensual imagery. xAI will appeal the decision.

Nvidia will officially bring DLSS 5 to older GPUs — but won’t give gamers full control

Nvidia’s DLSS 5 AI rendering tech was intended to launch solely for NBA 2K27 for 50-series RTX GPUs, but modders ported a leaked version of DLSS 5 able to function on a far wider selection of GPUs. Nvidia spokesperson Rajal Maharaj confirmed to The Verge DLSS 5 will now officially come to older RTX 40-series GPUs in a future expansion. The modded version enables sliders for full control, but Nvidia states “For gamers, DLSS 5 is a simple on-or-off toggle” and that the granular controls are meant for developers.

Video game makers really don’t want to give their customers tariff refunds

Game console manufacturers continue to argue in US court that console purchasers are not entitled to any US tariff refunds and moved to dismiss class-action lawsuits arguing otherwise. Back in July, Nintendo stated consumers were not misled about the price at the time of purchase, were informed in advance, and still chose to buy the product. Earlier this week, Sony told the court that consumers “voluntarily paid the advertised prices for the consoles and received exactly what they paid for.” Likewise, Microsoft stated that consumers paid for, received, and continue to use the product. Nintendo recorded a $300 million refund, Sony approximately $510 million, and Microsoft has not disclosed an amount at this time.

Apple tells Mac App Store developers they can now drop Intel support

Earlier in September, Apple emailed developers to share that universal macOS app in the Mac App Store requiring macOS 13 or later no longer need to support Intel-based Macs. Intel users can continue to use the latest version of any apps compatible with their machine. In 2025 Apple announced Rosetta 2, which translates Intel apps for Apple Silicon will be discontinued after macOS 27.

Nigeria’s regulator asks Uber about the services it did not deliver before leaving

Nigeria’s Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission launched an investigation into Uber’s sudden unannounced exit from the country last week. The commission aims to examine unfulfilled services to customers under the nation’s consumer laws. Uber announced the departure from Nigeria and Uganda as part of a global restructuring that included eliminating 3,300 jobs. Uber did not respond to a request for comment.

Tesla says first responders may need to push new Cybercab with no steering wheel

Following the limited launch of Tesla Cybercabs to limited areas in Austin, Texas, NBC News revealed first responders were given a manual detailing steps on how to deal with Cybercabs that crash or breakdown, including how to push the vehicles out of the way if they are an obstruction. Tesla’s manual says first responders can contact the company to remotely move the vehicles, but that there may be situations people need to push the car. If it needs to be turned, the Cybercab tires must be pushed in the correct direction from the outside before pushing the whole vehicle, as there is no steering wheel available in a Cybercab to do it the easy way. The manual also notes “Pushing Cybercab when it is not in Neutral or Tow Mode can result in overheating the motor and potential risk of shock if electrical components are exposed.”

Pentagon Disables Ad Tracking on Devices

NYC bans AI use for students until they reach high school

New York City’s Department of Education is introducing a new AI policy for schools; not completely banning it, but severely restricting acceptable use cases. For the 2026-2027 school year, Teachers will not be permitted to use AI tools for grading and must prevent students from using the tech until they reach high school. Chatbots primarily used for companionship are to reportedly going to be banned for all grades. AI limits for high school students include only using the tech in specific circumstances and must take an AI literacy course in order to “think critically”. Educators will still be allowed to use AI in lesson planning and possible exceptions can be granted for AI tools specifically designed for students requiring extra help and for computer science study units.

US urges hands-off approach to AI regulation at G20 tech meeting

On Tuesday, the US government suggested G20 members take a “hands-off approach” to any future AI regulations, advocating countries sign on to using the “Carolina Principles”, which focus only on writing rules for “novel” AI situations. Reuters reports the Chinese government signed on, but no copy of the document was provided and the Chinese Embassy has not yet responded to a request for comment.

Opera loses court challenge against EU exemption of Microsoft’s Edge from DMA rules

On Wednesday, the European Commission upheld a 2024 ruling that Microsoft’s Edge browser was not an important gateway for businesses to reach users, despite meeting the Digital Markets Act (DMA) criteria to be designated a gatekeeper. Web browser developer Opera had challenged the 2024 ruling claiming the criteria was misapplied, as users must use Edge in order to download any other browser, but the judges replied “The General Court upholds the Commission’s decision not to designate Microsoft as a gatekeeper in relation to Edge”.

New Android Drop adds remembered items in Find Hub, makes anti-nausea dots official

In September’s Android Drop, Google announced new features for users with Android 16 and newer. Gemini can now track misplaced items without a tracker tag if users tell Gemini to log a location of item and have the option to include a photo. Location information will be stored in the Find Hub. Gemini Live also added Guided Vision, using the phone’s camera to locate items in frame, even sharing how far a user’s hand is from an object, and can read text. As an example, Google suggested using it for a menu in a dimly lit restaurant. Other features include a wider rollout of the ability to reduce motion sickness when using a phone in a moving vehicle and increased customization in Google Messages.

Google launches a Canva alternative that lets you create posters, flyers, and social posts with AI

Google is also launching Google Pics over the next few weeks for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers as well as most Workspace business customers. Images can be created through text prompts and elements can be isolated and tweaked individually. Google Pics is similar to existing offerings by Canva and Adobe Firefly, but built in to Google Docs and Slides, avoiding the need for outside programs. Google Drive integration is expected in the next few weeks.

Adobe is making its tools available in Slack

Adobe announced Slack Business+ and Enterprise+ teams customers can now access Firefly, Adobe Express, Photoshop, Premiere, Acrobat, and other Adobe apps from directly within Slack’s AI chatbot. Users can tell Slackbot what they want to do and it will use the correct Adobe tool to work on the task. Adobe previously launched a similar integration for ChatGPT and Gemini availability is expected soon.

Uber drivers launch European class action over ‘soulless’ and ‘scary’ AI algorithm

Uber drivers in Europe and the United Kingdom filed a class-action lawsuit against Uber for the company’s “black box” algorithm in Amsterdam’s district court, alleging the algorithm’s pay determination system breaches data protection laws and lowers potential earnings. Uber drivers told The Guardian the personalized rate offers different fares to different drivers for the same ride at the lowest rate it thinks a driver will accept. The suit also claims Uber unlawfully used driver data for AI model training and seeks damages, as well as an injunction to halt actions it claims violate the GDPR. The suit was brought by Worker Info Exchange, which represents approximately 241,000 drivers.

Mozilla adds a built-in ad blocker to Firefox on iOS

Mozilla launched a built-in ad blocker for Firefox on iOS, using Apple’s WebKit content blocker with the EasyList filter, matching the previous launch of ad blocking within the desktop program and Android app. The new feature is off by default and included in Firefox 155. Ads directly served by a website will not be blocked, nor will ads in search results, and this does not remove any Firefox sponsor links on the new tab page.

Dyson Debuts $499 AI-Powered Toothbrush With a Built-In Camera

And, on Tuesday, Dyson announced the CameraJet, a $499 toothbrush. The toothbrush uses a water jet to get between teeth with a short burst of water thanks to a 100,000-pixel macro lens scanning at 28 images per second. Dyson’s machine learning algorithm was trained on 470,000 dental images to best rinse problem spots. The CameraJet can work with the MyDyson app for live viewing and coverage maps.

Apple prototyped a stylus for the foldable iPhone that we may never see

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple “internally prototyped, tested and considered launching” a type of Apple Pencil for the foldable phone expected this year, but calls it “unlikely” Apple will release this prototyped “stubbier” accessory alongside the foldable. Gurman says designing an attachment point for a pencil is tricky and could get in the way of opening and closing the phone for those uninterested in using it, and that a stylus could leave marks on the more delicate screens used in foldable phones.

Apple is testing continuous heart rate tracking for future Apple Watches

Also in Gurman’s Power On newsletter, Apple is testing an Apple Watch software update to allow the heart-rate monitoring feature to gather data continuously, instead of limiting it to during workouts and at random points during a day. This would bring Apple Watch results involving recovery, stress, and wellness more in line with competitors Whoop and Oura. The feature remains in testing with no word yet on release timeline or the effect on battery life.

California lawmakers unanimously pass Linux exemption from age-verification law

California’s legislature passed Assembly Bill 1856, which exempts open-source operating systems from needing to comply with California’s Digital Age Assurance Act, which takes effect on January 1st, 2027. This ends about a year of wondering whether Linux distros and SteamOS would have to implement a method to collect user age data. The bill amends the original definition of “operating system provider” to remove distributions “under license terms that permit a recipient to copy, redistribute, and modify the software.” Software distributed under the GPL, MIT, BSD, and Apache licenses pass this test.

Claude now has its own browser and no longer needs the Chrome extension

Anthropic now has a built-in browser in Claude Cowork, no longer requiring a Chrome extension to search the web. When a prompt needs access to the web, the new built-in browser will open in a side panel. This feature is enabled by default for Enterprise, Pro, Max, and Team tiers, but users may choose to opt-out. The built-in browser cannot access personal email or banking unless information is entered manually. Anthropic notes the browser remains vulnerable to prompt injection attacks. Earlier in August, OpenAI shut down its separate Atlas browser and built-in a browser for ChatGPT Work mode.

Sony Music and Warner Chappell sue Anthropic over song lyrics in Claude’s training data

A month after settling with authors in a billion dollar copyright lawsuit, Sony and Warner Chappel are now suing Anthropic over data mining song lyrics from major pirate sites. Dario Amodei and Benjamin Mann are personally named in the suit, and the music companies are seeking up to $150,000 per violation. In November 2025 a Munich court ruled that lyrics found in models counts as a reproduction and does not fall under any data mining exceptions.

Chess.com launched a poker site

Chess.com is expanding its game portfolio with Gambit, a poker soft-launched in beta back in May. Citing the similar social and strategic nature of the two games, Chess.com’s chief growth officer Albert Cheng says that poker is a natural companion to the site’s core focus. And that they will never implement real-money gambling through Gambit, adding “the whole industry makes money when beginners lose. We’d rather build a place where people can actually learn.” Cheng credited the use of AI in preparing Gambit for launch but says the final product will include no AI assets.

NASA launches powerful new space telescope to explore mysteries of the Universe

On Sunday morning, NASA launched the Nancy Grace Roman telescope using a SpaceX rocket. Named for NASA’s first chief astronomer, known for her work on the Hubble Telescope, the Roman Telescope will be used to study exoplanets outside our solar system, with a field of vision 100x larger than the Hubble, which launched in 1990. The telescope will be in position in about 100 days, approximately 1 million miles from Earth.

OpenAI Cuts Off Cursor After SpaceXAI Deal

OpenAI says it will end Cursor’s access to its models starting November 12th, after the AI coding assistant was acquired by SpaceXAI. Cursor can choose to end the partnership earlier, but OpenAI says it is not confident SpaceX will follow its terms of service, citing its “experience with Elon Musk’s companies violating contracts.” There is a lot of history here, since Musk was an early OpenAI backer and has been fighting with the company for years.

South Korea Makes AI a Public Service

The Wall Street Journal’s sources say South Korea wants to give every citizen free access to premium-level generative AI services. The “AI for All” program is expected to start beta testing in September, with a full launch by the end of the year. The government is also putting about $7.2 billion into AI initiatives for 2026, making this as much about national AI strategy as consumer access.

The US Looks at Remote AI Compute Loopholes

The Information’s sources say the US administration is weighing export controls aimed at Chinese access to advanced AI compute through remote servers in countries like Thailand and Singapore. Tencent Joins the Giant Model Race

X Says It Found an Anti-Data-Center Bot Farm

X says it found a China-linked bot farm with roughly 200,000 suspected inauthentic accounts, including hundreds posting about US AI data centers, energy costs, and grid reliability. That could be a real information operation, but local opposition to data centers is not exactly hard to find. The power, water, and land-use concerns are already very real.

Alphabet Settles a UK Google Play Fight

Alphabet agreed to pay £260 million to settle a UK class action lawsuit over Google Play fees. Meta Fixes Another Smart Glasses Privacy Problem

Nvidia’s DLSS 5 Leaks Early

OPPO May Be Going All-In on 200 Megapixels

Trusted leaker Digital Chat Station claimed on Weibo that the OPPO Find X10 Pro Max could be the first phone with three 200-megapixel rear cameras. That would mean a 200-megapixel main camera, telephoto camera, and ultrawide camera. The phone could arrive in September or October, but for now this is still firmly in leak territory.

Cyborg Cockroaches for Disaster Rescue

Researchers at the University of Queensland are testing remote-controlled giant burrowing cockroaches that can carry cameras and tiny drug injectors into spaces rescuers cannot reach. The team says the “paraborgs” hit close-range injection targets 95% of the time when they got within 15 centimeters, while the full navigation-and-injection task worked in 72% of trials. The idea is to use cyborg insect teams in collapsed buildings or caves within five to 10 years.

Google’s New Standards Target Android App Memory Problems
