Meta removes language that raised scraping and AI training concerns

Following Friday’s Meta announcement about a terms of service change that would allow the company to scrape content from sites linked to Meta business accounts to train AI models, which would have begun October 30th, Meta has updated this ToS update. In a statement to The Verge a Meta spokesperson said, “We’ve heard you and want to clarify: the crawling terms we consolidated only applied to our ads and business products, and we’ve clarified that in the terms themselves. It does not change how Meta uses web crawlers.”

Disney Offers $180 Million Soft Landing to Staff at Bankrupt AI Firm

As part of Disney buying some assets from Character.ai for $20 million, the company announced it would hire more than 60 Character workers, and pay roughly $180 million in the first three years. This deal must still be approved by a bankruptcy judge.

Microsoft axes AI deal in setback for UK data centre pioneer

British company Nscale’s plans for a major data center in Essex hit a major setback with Microsoft deciding to pull out of the deal announced last year. The project has been troubled by delays amid growing public discontent with data centers and an industry wide sell-off. The data site was intended to come online in 2027, and grid bosses told Nscale they do not expect a power supply until the 2030s.

Qualcomm says rumors about Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 overheating are ‘inaccurate’

Qualcomm is denying reports out of Korea that its Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 chips are overheating. Qualcomm further denies this alleged problem is causing issues with its relationship with Samsung, specifically the rumors the company is considering skipping the Snapdragon 8 Elite due to said alleged thermal problems. Qualcomm CMO Don McGuire posted on X, “Recent reporting about thermal issues related to Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 is inaccurate” and that the company continues to “work closely with global OEMs to deliver premium user experiences.”

Mercedes-AMG’s new electric SUV brings 1,153hp and a serious attitude

On October 17th, Mercedes-AMG unveiled the AMG GT SUV, the first full-size SUV developed entirely in-house. The range includes a GT 53, GT 55, and GT 63 models, with the top versions aimed at drivers looking for basically a supercar performance in an SUV. Mercedes-AMG announced the AMG GT 63 SUV will possess 1,153 horsepower, with three electric motors, delivering up to 711 horsepower continuously. It’ll also have ultra-fast charging and improved chassis technology. No price was announced thought the GT SUV is expected in the United States in summer 2027.

These Samsung Galaxy tablets are in their last year of software support

Owners of the S9 series of Samsung Galaxy tablets will see support for their devices coming to an end this year. The S9, S9+, S9 Ultra, S9 FE, and S9 FE+ have reached the end of their support cycle. These devices will no longer receive major updates to the Android devices, though security updates will continue until 2028. The S10 line of 2024 Galaxy tablets are expected to have seven years of support under Samsung’s newer software update policy.

Japan to launch spacecraft on a mission to get samples from a Martian moon

On Tuesday, October 20th, JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) plans to launch an H-3 Rocket to gather samples from a Martian moon. The mission is expected to take five years with the aim of discovering clues to how Phobos and smaller sibling Deimos were formed. Japan is leading this mission, which includes equipment and comms support from NASA and other global space agencies.

Anthropic would like a word on the rules

OpenAI employee who left for Apple took files about unreleased device, OpenAI alleges

As revealed on Tuesday by the OpenAI newsroom, the FBI arrested an OpenAI employee accused of installing “a sophisticated recording device” in an executive conference room in the company’s San Francisco headquarters. The accused is 35-year-old Abdulrahman Alfozan, a Saudi national and now former OpenAI engineer. OpenAI discovered the bug wrapped in toilet paper and plugged into a television USB port. The company said it used its own AI models to help identify Alfozan before involving the FBI.

Xbox announces Xbox Labs, a new initiative to trial emerging ideas and “new technology”

Xbox launched Xbox Labs, a new internal research and development initiative led by CEO Asha Sharma to rapidly test emerging technologies and gaming features through direct player engagement. The project will use existing internal staff, formalizing ongoing projects such as browser-based distribution and mod support into the lab, inspired in part by the recent flood of AI-ports of retro games to modern platforms. Microsoft clarified to GamesIndustry.biz that AI usage won’t be mandatory.

F.B.I. Disrupts Pyongyang Revenue Stream: North Koreans in U.S. Tech Jobs

The New York Times reports the FBI and CrowdStrike disrupted a major North Korean revenue stream seizing nearly 200 devices from over 40 laptop farms dismantled in Texas. These US-based farms enabled North Korean IT workers, using stolen American identities, to obtain employment in the United States at remote tech jobs, with their salaries, totaling millions, going towards North Korean weapons programs.

Netflix is laying off around 1,000 employees

Netflix is laying off 1,000 employees, approximately 6% of its global workforce, making it the largest round of downsizing since 2022. Co-CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters made the announcement in an internal memo, specifying the layoffs will mostly affect Netflix’s product, technology, human resources, and legal teams.

Apple also says the company has “policies and procedures in place to ensure new employees do not use ​confidential information from ​previous employers.”

WhatsApp adds a guest option for joining calls without an account

Meta’s WhatsApp announced a new feature called guest calling, enabling someone to join a call without needing a WhatsApp account. Guests can’t start a call, only receive & accept invitations, but will have access to the usual screen sharing, emoji reaction, and hand raising tools. Guests need to be approved by the call host before joining and will not have any time limits on their participation. WhatsApp is also working on a plugin for calendar integrations, allowing for WhatsApp calls to be created from Outlook and Google calendars, expected later in 2026.

Delaware jury awards Qualcomm $2 in damages, finds Arm breached license agreement

Following the five-day trial in Delaware last week, the jury found Arm holdings did breach a licensing agreement with Qualcomm, intentionally interfering with the chipmaker’s business relationship with Meta Platforms, but only awarded nominal damages of $2. Both sides are taking this as a win. Qualcomm said in a statement, “We are gratified that the jury found Arm breached its long-standing Architectural License Agreement (ALA) […] and intentionally acted to disrupt Qualcomm’s businesses”. And Arm said “the jury’s verdict confirms that Arm operated in ​good faith […] and its award of only two dollars confirms the merit of Arm’s arguments in the ‌case.”

Epic says its new ‘vibe coded’ Epic Games Store launcher is faster than Steam

Epic’s previously-teased rebuilt launcher client is now available in beta, in preview for Windows and Mac and now also Linux. Epic claims it halved the client’s startup time, getting users to the store page 46% faster than Steam. Epic’s release announcement refers to the rebuilt client as “vibe-coded”, adding Epic opted to use AI since “programming is hard”.

Apple Is About to Close the Biggest Hole In Its Ecosystem With HomeView

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports Apple’s Smart Home event on Tuesday will reveal the smart home hub will be called HomeView, powered by an A18 chip, and there will be two versions. A countertop model will have a metal speaker base and a wall-mounted version will have a flat, square base to sit against the wall under the display. There will, reportedly, a difference in color options between the two units. Countertops units will offer: space gray, silver, starlight and pink. Wall-mounted units will be limited to the space gray and silver. Gurman says the HomeView will not have an App Store and supports a limited selection of Apple apps.

Apple planning huge iPhone Duo demo experiences at select retail stores: report

Gurman also reports Apple is planning for its flagship stores to have huge demo experiences for the first foldable iPhone. As an example, he says “The Fifth Avenue location in New York City is expected to have more than 150 units” and smaller stores are only expected to receive around twenty units. The iPhone Duo launches October 23rd and prices start at $1,999 USD.

Apple is reportedly giving the MacBook Pro a touchscreen

In the last bit of Apple news for the day, Bloomberg’s PowerOn newsletter also mentions a planned event, on or around October 27th to possibly introduce touchscreen MacBook Pro laptops, a new iPad Mini, and other updated Macs. Apple initially planned for a touchscreen laptop back in 2025 before delaying. Codenamed K114 and K116m the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models would feature touchscreen OLED displays, and could add an iPhone-style dynamic island alongside tweaks to MacOS Golden Gate to improve touch interactions.

Introducing Microsoft-Decision-1, our model for fast decision-making

Microsoft introduced Microsoft-Decision-1 a new decision-scoring model designed for fast, low-cost structured choices over open-ended text generation. The announcement post uses routing, classification, prioritization, and workflow controls as examples. It is trained on Alibaba’s open-weight Qwen3.5-9B architecture and will also be re-based on other models, including Microsoft AI (MAI) and OpenAI. In Microsoft’s internal benchmark tracking it ran 35 times quicker than GPT-6 Sol. Microsoft-Decision-1 is available now through Microsoft Foundry and OpenRouter.

Synopsys looks to work with Chinese AI labs to speed up chip design

Synopsys, a multinational electronic design automation firm, is exploring partnerships with Chinese large language model builders to speed up chip development while remaining within US export control rules. Back on September 30th, Synopsys announced a multi-year deal with OpenAI to develop GPT-Synopsys, for automating and accelerating chip design processes, and is looking to make similar deals with Chinese firms.

US probes Foxconn, Luxshare and 18 others over AI server power patents

The US International Trade Commission (USITC) launched an investigation based on a complaint filed on behalf of Vicor Corporation, which “alleges violations of section 337 of the Tariff Act of 1930 in the importation into the United States and sale of certain vertical power delivery systems, components thereof, and computing systems containing the same that infringe certain claims of the patent asserted by the complainant”. The investigation covers 20 companies, including Foxconn, Luxshare and Quanta. Vicor wants a range of products from those 20 companies barred from the US.

As Xbox and PlayStation sales reach new lows, analyst says the “US hardware market has not been in a more precarious position since the early 80s”

Mat Piscatella reports Circana’s US Retail Tracking Service shows that in the 2026 YTD, which ended in August, Xbox hardware unit sales are down 33% from 2025, and PlayStation hardware units are down 25%. This makes the Xbox YTD US hardware unit sales an all-time low and PlayStation’s lowest since 2013. Piscatella added “The average price a consumer has paid for a new Xbox console in 2026 YTD ending August is $529, 26% higher than a year ago, while the average PlayStation console has sold for $597, 20% higher than last year”.

Margaret Hamilton, Apollo Software Pioneer, Dies at 90

Margaret Hamilton, the pioneering computer scientist who led the software engineering team for NASA’s Apollo program at MIT and coined the term “software engineering,” passed away at age 90. Her groundbreaking work in fault-tolerant, priority-driven software was critical to the success of the moon landing and helped establish software development as a recognized engineering discipline. She later founded successful software companies, including Hamilton Technologies, and earned numerous prestigious honors throughout her lifetime, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Apple to Launch Doorbell, Lock, Thermostat Developed With LG

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports Apple’s upcoming smart home devices include a doorbell, thermostat, and “other accessories”, and were developed in partnership with LG. Gurman says that these products will carry LG branding. LG applied to regulatory approval for some of these devices, including products labeled “the LG Video Doorbell Wired, LG Floodlight Cam, LG Outdoor Cam Plug-In, LG Indoor Cam Plug-In, LG Smart Deadbolt Lock, LG Smart Thermostat and LG Temperature Sensor.” Back in September LG Smart TVs were accused of logging audio and phoning home with the data.

Spotify expands audiobooks to more than 180 markets by the end of 2026

At the Frankfurt Book Fair on Wednesday, Spotify announced it will offer audiobooks in over 180 markets before the end of 2026, a noticeable jump from the 22 markets that currently have access to the feature. There will be over 350,000 titles in more than 120 languages, including in Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, and Polish. Spotify Premium subscribers get 12 hours of audiobooks a month, users in Africa and Asia will gain access through a paid add-on for extra listening hours called Audiobooks+. And anyone can buy single titles to keep. Spotify said its publishing deals are non-exclusive, so authors’ works will still be available on other platforms.

Boston Dynamics Taps Amazon Alexa Executive as New CEO

Robotics company Boston Dynamics named Rohit Prasad as its new CEO. Hyundai, a majority owner of Boston Dynamics previously announced plans to deploy the Atlas robot at its plant in Georgia in 2028 and build capacity to produce up to 30,000 humanoid robots annually. Prasad previously led AI development at Amazon and spent over a decade at Raytheon BBN Technologies.

AI Music Streaming Fraudster Sentenced to 1.5 Years in Prison for $8M Royalties Scam

Back in March, Michael Smith pleaded guilty to using AI to illegally make over $8 million in royalties by generating AI songs and streaming them with bots billions of times. Now Manhattan federal court Judge John G. Koeltl ordered Smith to serve a year and a half in jail, to be followed by two years of supervised release. The Recording Industry Association of America said in a statement, “We appreciate the Court recognizing the significance of this harmful conduct and the ill-gotten gains that come from the pockets of real artists, songwriters and their label partners.”

Google’s new SynthID website can identify AI-generated media

On Tuesday Google opened up the SynthID Detector website to everyone after granting access to a select group of journalists and researchers to test last year. The site enables people to detect whether an image, video, or audio clip was AI generated. SynthID was introduced in 2023 and all Google AI products generate media with a SynthID watermark. Google says people “make 1 million requests to verify content every day.”

Xreal’s Aura Android XR smartglasses will cost you at least $1,279

First announced at Google I/O, Xreal Android XR-powered Aura smart glasses are now available for pre-order starting at $1,279. These pre-orders are currently limited to those who previously paid a reservation deposit. The Aura will be available in two sizes: medium (60-66mm) and large (66-72mm), shipping with the compute puck. The model with 12GB of RAM and 256GB is $1,279 and the option with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage is $1,499. Shipping begins soon in the US, Canada, Japan and South Korea, with pre-orders opening to the general public in the coming weeks.

Xbox has [NOT ]secured GTA 6 streaming rights

If you previously heard that Xbox secured exclusive streaming rights to the next Grand Theft Auto, you heard wrong, apparently. Xbox Chief Strategy Officer Matthew Ball said on X that the company is “looking forward to launching GTA VI on XBOX November 19, though the game will not be streaming exclusively or to PC.”
