God's Righteousness

Have you ever wondered what Jesus meant by

“For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.”

Matthew 5:20 NKJV

The explanation is in the" Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector"

“Also He spoke this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others:”

The Pharisee in the parable was seeking justification on the basis of his own righteousness: “I am not like other people: swindlers, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax-gatherer. I fast twice a week; I pay tithes of all that I get” (vv. 11 –12). We commonly call such people self-righteous. Have you ever considered why? It is because they assume they have ample righteousness of their own and do not see the need for imputed righteousness.

But the tax-gatherer was under no such delusion. All he could do was repent and plead for mercy. And so perfect righteousness was imputed to his account. Forever thereafter he stood before God fully justified.

That's why Jesus is saying in Sermon on the Mount that "your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees,"

This what Paul is saying as :-

“For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God.”

Many people take comfort by keeping company with friends who are losers, who are less successful than they are, who are more troubled they are..This is one way of making themselves feel better...They compare themselves with the lowly person and bat themselves on the back saying " Oh, I am not like that fellow, I am better, I am more successful, etc..." It need not happen to the average person..

Interestingly, look at the Bible...Pharisee, who are scholars and considered the bible teachers of that time, loo, how he prays in in The Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector (Luke 18:9-14 (NIV)):-

Luke 18: 11 (NIV)
11 The Pharisee stood by himself(D) and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people—robbers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast(E) twice a week and give a tenth(F) of all I get.’

But, look what Jesus has to say about them. :-
a) John 8:43-44 New International Version (NIV)
43 Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. 44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies

20 For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

44 Woe to you! For you are like unmarked graves, and people walk over them without knowing it.”

d) Matthew 23:27New International Version (NIV)
27 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean.

Very strong words. But, the take away is this. They knew the Law..but, instead of doing the right thing they were hypocrite and probably knew about this..but, they took comfort by comparing themselves with others and felt comfortable in their ways...And Jesus calls them all sort of names !!!!!

In the present times we can always see this from people who stagnant, who backslide, who are generally losers and do nothing about it. Basically, they are lazy and laid back..so, to hide that fact from others ( i.e. From their loved ones) and to cheat themselves they constantly keep company with others who are worst off than themselves and feel happy about themselves..

They see someone drunk and rolling on the street and say to themselves " I can hold my drink and don't make a scene".
They see a person who take drugs and say to themselves " I don't do drug".
They see a fellow who is constantly out of work and say to themselves "I have a job/ business " But the real truth will be that they financially worst off..

All this is self-delusion, self-deception, ....

Finally, they end up surrounding themselves with people of that sort and happy that they are better !!! What a shame and what a pity. !!!!!

While the late Jim Rohn, a contemporary motivational speaker, is credited with saying “You are the average of the five people that you spend the most time with,” this concept didn’t originate with him. For years, folk wisdom has taught us to be aware of whom we spend our time with:

“Birds of a feather flock together.”

“You can know a man by the company that he keeps.”

“If you lie down with dogs you’ll wake up with fleas.”

And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. (Revelation 21:3 NKJV)

Passing the Buck a.k.a Blaming the other

CONCEPT OF RESPONSIBILITY

It is human tendency to blame others for our problems. The reasons are manifold. Primary reason is to pass the buck and not to feel guilty. But, it is not a recent phenomenon,,It appears to be prevalent from Genesis' times !!!!!

Who is guilty of the first sin in Eden ??

Firstly, what was the sin ?

The disobeying of God's command

What was the command ? Not eat the fruit that one tree.

Then the LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it. And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.” (Genesis 2:15-17 NKJV)

Who disobeyed ?

So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate. (Genesis 3:6 NKJV)

It is clear Eve ate the fruit and gave it to Adam..

God asks Adam :-

"And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you that you should not eat?” (Genesis 3:11 NKJV)"

Adam's answer is very revealing :-

Then the man said, “The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I ate.” (Genesis 3:12 NKJV)

This amounts to Adam saying " God, it is all Your and Eve's fault" !!!!

[Incidentally, Eve is not far behind in blaming other...
And the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” (‭Genesis‬ ‭3‬:‭13‬ NKJV)]

But the New Testament holds Adam responsible :-

"For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, .......... (Romans 5:19 NKJV)"

How that's so ?

God gave the instruction about not eating the fruit even before Eve was created...

Verse .17 "but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.” (Genesis 2:17 NKJV)"

Thereafter

Verse.22 Then the rib which the LORD God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man. (Genesis 2:22 NKJV)

It appears that God had given that instructions to Adam directly and that means he is responsible. He was expected to convey it to Eve and ensure that it was followed. But, Adam fails in all these counts..

1) He could't get Eve to follow God's (only) commandment ;

2) He ended out violating that commandment himself ; and

3) He blamed God and Eve ( The serpent) for the whole mess..

It is no wonder the humans behave the same way even now !!!!

"We prayed, fasted, and sought God to heal, but nothing happened, so how could it have been God's will for that person to be healed?"

This is such a largely debated subject within the body of Christ, and of course I have a teaching on it. This month, I want to bring something to the table which should get us all thinking about this whole subject of healing. I have news for today's church: Just because you pray for something, and nothing happens, does not mean it is God's will for nothing to happen.

There are so many times, things under the surface that are going on which are never addressed. The Bible tells us that God's people (not the world, but the Children of God) are destroyed (Satan is stealing, killing, and destroying them - see John 10:10) by lack of knowledge (see Hosea 4:6). Somehow, the church today thinks that if we just launch a few prayers to heaven, that the will of God will be done... completely ignoring the whole idea of how a lack of knowledge can destroy the children of the kingdom!

The root to the disease Lupus is almost always rooted in issues of self-hate. You can pray all you want for somebody to be healed, and I'm not saying that God cannot step in and do a divine miracle, but most of the time He is waiting for us to address the roots of our bondages. Henry Wright, a highly respected leader in healing and deliverance ministry, said that when you address the self hate, certain diseases such as lupus just start to disappear.

Let me ask you this: if your car didn't start on Sunday morning (a very important prayer service that you didn't want to miss for the world), and you prayed and asked God to transport you in the Spirit to church on Sunday morning, but He didn't do it, would you dare say that it wasn't God's will for you to be in church that morning? Many of us might say that the devil hindered us, as Paul was hindered by Satan (see 1 Thessalonians 2:18). Why don't we apply this principal to healing prayers that failed? Why is it so quickly God's will for somebody to be sick, just because a prayer for healing isn't answered? What if you prayed and prayed for a loved one to get saved, and they died cursing God and went to hell? Would we dare say that it was God's will for that person to go to hell, just because our prayers were not answered? Do you see how immature it is to assume that just because a prayer isn't answered, means that it was not God's will to see that prayer answered? Let's look at the verse again where we are told to ask for wisdom, but to ask in faith (see James 1:5-7)... clearly it is God's desire to give us wisdom, but according to this passage, if we aren't fulfilling the requirement of this passage, then we may not receive a thing from God. Again, that doesn't mean it was not God's will to let our prayer go unanswered.

To even take this a step further, there is only one place in the entire NT which speaks of praying for the sick... all the times the disciples and Jesus ministered healing, it was done by exercising their authority over the sickness or disease, which further proves the point that we have been given authority over sickness. We don't need to beg God for something that He's put us in charge of and told us to go out and "heal the sick".

Many times, what happens is that Christians are praying for a healing, while leaving the root of the problem alone, and then when God doesn't do a miracle, we begin to spread the word that it must not have been God's will for them to be healed. Even in the case where the man was born blind, God got the glory from the man's HEALING... not the man's infirmity! Nowhere in the entire NT am I aware of, did God ever get an ounce of glory from somebody remaining in their sickness or disease!

One good point that the Holy Spirit had shown me was concerning the will of God here on earth, and that it is the same as His will in heaven. You can read my teaching on The Will of God on Earth for a better understanding of this revelation. Basically, what we see happening in heaven, is what God wants to see here on earth (remember "Thy will be done here on earth as it is in heaven"?). Do we see things missing, broken, sickened, and lacking up in heaven? Not at all! Then what makes us think that these things are God's will here on earth then? Or are we going to argue that those are God's will up in heaven? The whole point of Jesus coming here to earth and doing all those miracles, healings, deliverances, etc., was to demonstrate and bring the Father's will down here to earth. This is why Jesus equipped the saints to heal the sick and cast out demons (see Mark 16:17-18), so that His will could manifest here on earth, and we could carry on the ministry that Jesus started and demonstrated to us during His time here on earth.

Let's take a moment and look at true Biblical faith faith. I have a more detailed teaching on Biblical faith and healing, but I want to address briefly here as well. You cannot have faith for something that has not been promised to you. If I never promised to pay your student loan off, you have no grounds to believe that I will. It would be impossible for you to have faith that I'm going to do something that I never said I would do. The same is true with God, as faith comes by hearing God's Word (which include His promises!). As Pastor James Brandt says, "You can only have faith for something that is promised to you in the Word." The Bible refers to the prayer for healing as a prayer of faith, which means it is a prayer of knowing (see James 5:15). Furthermore, in that passage, we are told that the prayer of faith WILL save the sick. This prayer of faith is a very important subject all by itself, as it is not just a prayer of concentration ("if it be thy will"). This makes it virtually impossible to have uncontaminated faith in God for a healing, if we are on the fence as to whether or not it is God's will to heal us. The Bible tells us that he who asks of faith needs to ask believing, or else he cannot expect anything from God (see James 1:6-7). Having faith in somebody for something means that you are trusting them to come through on a promise made. You cannot have a whole lot of faith that I'm going to pay your car payment this month if I never promised to do such a thing, can you? The same principal is true when it comes to receiving the promises of God.

I'm going to be honest with you, until I see the church demonstraiting the success rate that Jesus' ministry and that of the early church had when it came to healing ministry, I am not satisfied with their beliefs and approaches to healing ministry. We can leave all of this, "Is it God's will?" business on the back burner, and get busy figuring out what we are missing, what knowledge we are lacking which is destroying our friends and loved ones. God's Word tells us that it was Satan who came to kill, but Jesus came to give life. Cancer (which is almost always demonically rooted) is a means of killing God's saints. The man born blind never died in that state, or it would have never given God glory. All too often people take their sicknesses and diseases to the grave, which brings God no glory. The ONLY case where a death due to sickness gave God glory, was the story of Lazareth, who brought God much glory ONLY because he was later raised from the dead.What gave God glory in the NT concerning those who were sick? It was when they were healed; scores of healings took place and brought God much glory among the people.

And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatick, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them.

Once we reach the level of success that is demonstrated to us in the NT, then let's sit down and discuss this whole idea of God's desire to see His children sick and miserable (as they are in heaven?).

They are things that we imagine... the devil usually plants them in our minds when he asks us a question that starts out with "What if..." Don't waste your time trying to reason things with the devil. Just throw it out and leave him hanging! Get your mind on God's Word and off of what the devil is trying to tell you.

I think too many people make strongholds out to be a complex subject. Strongholds are merely incorrect thinking patterns. They are patterns in our minds that are programmed to think contrary to the truth.

For example, a common scenario is where a person feels dirty, guilty and is shameful of their past. They are so used to thinking about their past, that it's driven the person to think and feel like a failure! They feel unworthy to have a close intimate relationship with God, which greatly affects their spiritual strength, faith, and relationship with Him. No wonder Satan tries to build such strongholds in our minds!

So how does Satan build these strongholds?

He starts by reminding us of our past failures and sins. He brings up things that we ought not to be dwelling upon, and tries to make us agree with him on how badly we failed. We then have the choice to listen and agree with him, or listen to God's Word (which is telling us that those sins have been washed away). If we take the devil's bait and begin to mediate on our failures, it will begin to pull us down spiritually and strongholds will develop. We will begin to see ourselves as failures because we've taken the bait and chose to meditate on a lie that the devil has fed us!

It is also not uncommon to find a person who picks up a demonic spirit through sin (such as fornication), and that demon uses it's newly gained rights (or ability) in the person's mind to quickly build strongholds. Since the demon is able to influence the person from the inside now, it can get the job done much quicker. This is not an uncommon scenario! Not only does the demonic spirit(s) need to be driven out, but the stronghold also needs to be torn down before the person will experience a complete breakthrough.

Strongholds can and do play a big part of how we feel

If we think we are a failure, we will feel like failures. If you think you're hopeless, you will feel hopeless. If you know you are forgiven, you'll feel clean inside. If you constantly think of your past failures, you will see yourself as associated with them. If you constantly think of how you have been separated from your past when the Blood of Jesus has washed it away, you will feel bright and clean inside. Changing the way you think can make a big difference in the way you feel!

How do we tear down strongholds?

Strongholds are build upon deception and lies that we've accepted into our minds. So how do you counter a lie? How do you counter deception? With the truth. Where do we find the truth? In the Word of God. As we can see in Ephesians, this weapon is known as the sword of the Spirit:

Ephesians 6:17, "...the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God."

In 2 Corinthians, we are told that our spiritual weaponry is designed to tear down strongholds:

2 Corinthians 10:3-5, "For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ."

This is a great verse that gives us a good idea of how we are to go about tearing down strongholds in our minds. First, since the sword of the Spirit is the offensive piece of our weaponry, it is a great tool for tearing down strongholds. You need to go on the offensive to tear down a stronghold, and the Word of God is the weapon you cannot afford not to use.

So when the devil tries to tell us, "You really messed up, haven't you?"

You need to counter it with, "1 John 3:5 tells me that the reason Jesus went to the cross was to take away that sin! Hebrews 8:12 tells me that even God has chosen to forget my sin!"

Boy does Satan hate that! It reminds him of the days when he tried tempting Jesus:

Satan said to Jesus, "If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread." (Matthew 4:3)

But Jesus replied with, "It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God." (Matthew 4:4)

What did Satan do? After Jesus did that a few times, he had no choice but to hit the road... his efforts were useless against Jesus! Jesus knew the relevant scriptures to quote, and took away Satan's ability to influence Him!

Let's go back to 2 Corinthians again and see what else it has to say:

As we can see, we are told to cast down imaginations. What are imaginations? They are things that we imagine... the devil usually plants them in our minds when he asks us a question that starts out with "What if..." Don't waste your time trying to reason things with the devil. Just throw it out and leave him hanging! Get your mind on God's Word and off of what the devil is trying to tell you.

What else are we told in this verse? We are to cast down every thought that comes into our minds that opposes the knowledge of God. What is the knowledge of God? Since God associates Himself with His Word (John 1:1), if anything comes into our minds that is contrary to God's Word, throw it out! Do not waste your time thinking about it or trying to reason with it. If Satan is trying to tell you that God is not wanting to forgive you, then don't listen to it. Why? Because His Word says otherwise:

Isaiah 30:18, "Therefore the LORD longs to be gracious to you, And therefore He waits on high to have compassion on you." (NASB)

Not only does He want to forgive your sins, so that your relationship with Him can be restored, He longs (which means He deeply desires) to do so!One of the last things Satan wants us to know is God's forgiving and loving nature towards us even after we have messed up!

As you can see, strongholds are built on lies and deception. How do you counter such things? With truth! Where do you find truth? In the Word of God! Stop thinking about what Satan has been feeding you, and begin to meditate on God's Word. Take verses in the Bible that run contrary to what the devil's been feeding you, and repeat them to yourself over and over out loud. Think about them often, and meditate on them. The devil got his stronghold built by causing you to meditate on his lies and deception, so if you want to tear down that stronghold, you need to begin meditating on the exact opposite, which is God's Word.

Listening to and reasoning with the things the devil puts in your mind is exactly what he wants you to do. It feed his strongholds when you allow your mind to meditate on Satan's word (opposite of God's Word). Cut him off at the source and say NO to the garbage he's been feeding you, and at the same time turn to God's Word. Begin to feed, meditate upon, think about often and dwell upon on the truth. It will stop Satan dead in his tracks!

It is also possible to have strongholds in place because demonic spirits have attached themselves to you at some point or another, and need to be driven out. If you work hard at tearing down strongholds by applying the truths in God's Word and this teaching, and yet you seem to hit a wall, it may be because a demonic spirit needs to be driven out. It is very possible (and not uncommon) to experience quite a bit of freedom through applying the principals in this teaching even if there is a demonic spirit present, but you will only go so far and feel like you're hitting a wall. That is a sign of a demon at work that needs to be driven out. It can be awfully hard to battle when they are working on you from the inside out. Resisting them from the outside is easy, but resisting them when they are on the inside can be extremely hard. If you seem to have reached an immovable mountain, you might want to consider the possibility of needing to have an unclean spirit driven out.

Many Christians today believe that they cannot have demons... nothing could be further from the truth! When you're in the ministry of deliverance, you see very sincere believers manifest demons quite often. I was one myself... a very sincere believer who dearly loved the Lord... and yet I faced awful demonic bondages and have been through deliverance!
