In honor of tonight’s Band of Horses concert, I give you the song that still makes me weak at the knees, makes me smile, and makes me think of my best guy friend and the way he found the need to make up a ‘new clap’ for this band. “No One’s Gonna Love You” may sound like a pretty negative song, but listen…it’s the exact opposite.

Something about this song - Fog, by Mason Proper - is reminiscent of TV on the Radio. It’s not really reflective of Mason Proper’s entire album Olly Oxen Free, but I keep returning to this song. It has a few dashes of Cold War Kids thrown in too for good nature. Whatever the combination, I like it. LOTS AND LOTS AND LOTS.

My fave XM Channel (Sirius-XMU, duh!) plays Great Lake Swimmers all the time. I find them both awesome & calming, and can’t wait for their new album to come out at the end of the month. This song - Various Stages - is in strong contention for my yearly ‘Best first line of a song’ contest. Would love to see them live.

Heard one beat of this song and knew immediately it was Matt & Kim. Sounds very similar to ‘Daylight’, the first song they released off their new album Grand, and that’s a good thing. I can’t get enough of this poppy, catchy duo, and can’t wait to see ‘em tonight at Cafe du Nord.

I love my XM (now SiriusXM) Radio. Every morning on my 12-minute commute, I get to hear the beginning of their daily “Blog Radio” hosted by some of my fave music blogs. Today’s episode - courtesy of “My Old Kentucky Blog” (which isn’t southern and rednecky, despite the name) - introduced me to New Villager, some local SF lads (by way of Brooklyn) that are about to release their 7’ single. This song - Rich Doors - is well-aligned to be my new fave. Oh, and their only show is Friday, Jan 23rd at Bottom of the Hill. Yes, please.

It’s a travesty that I didn’t listen to For Emma, Forever Ago by Bon Iver until late this Fall. I suppose there’s a metaphysical reason for this - maybe I wasn’t ready for it earlier and found it when I needed it most - but I still feel jilted by missing the breathtaking songs that calm and soothe and help to heal even the most jagged wounds. “Re: Stacks” is the one I’m finding myself playing the most these days, or is at least in constant rotation with “Blood Bank”, the song off of his forthcoming EP. Regardless, the ethereal quality of Re: Stacks is a true salve these days.

‘Goodbye Sunshine’ by Ryan Adams & the Cardinals - this demo & video recorded in ‘some hotel’. To me it’s very reminiscent of some of the songs off of Love is Hell…specifically, “I See Monsters”. Regardless, it’s beautiful.

I’m getting ready to compile my ‘Best of 2008’ list, and I’ve used a few sources to try and determine what I loved the most: Last.fm, my iTunes play count (since I’ve had this computer since early February), my iTunes manual playlists, and even DailyTuneage to remind myself what I loved in, say, March. Because we forget - it’s all too easy to forget. In doing so, I’ve found that a few of the songs that moved me the most - or that I adore the most - somehow didn’t make it on any of these lists…I clearly didn’t play them enough (at least in comparison to some of the other songs) or perhaps it was on a CD in my car. (Yes, I still have those.) ‘Skinny Love’ by Bon Iver is one of these songs, and is hands down one of the best songs on Justin Vernon’s epic album, “For Emma, Forever Ago.” It is also one of my favorite songs, ever.
