I love Phoenix so much, which you know, since all I do lately is quote their lyrics. But you’ve gotta admit, this song (Rome) is nothing less than phenomenal.

Clearly, I should have purchased the 500 Days of Summer soundtrack since first “Sweet Disposition” and now this, The Doves’ “There Goes The Fear” are both from that rocktacular album. “There Goes the Fear” is 6:54 of pure brilliance, which sounds like the love child of Local Natives’ “Airplanes” and The Helio Sequence’s “Hallelujah” if something that spectacular could actually happen. And apparently it can.

Heard this Noah and the Whale song last week and originally loved the tune; heard it again today and listened to the lyrics. I find them to be hit or miss with their songs at times, but this one - Blue Skies - as raw and harsh and honest as it is, is right on the mark. Sappy, yes. But I can do sappy now and again. I’ve been soothing my ears & heart lately with some Bon Iver, The Antlers and of course Frightened Rabbit, but I often also turn to the old standby, Ryan Adams. And for some reason this song - Oh My God, Whatever, Etc. - has come up on Pandora and playlists a few times over the past couple of days. As such, here ‘tis.

I saw Sufjan Stevens live a few years ago at Zellerbach Hall at Berkeley, and was blown away not only with his voice (impeccable) but the performance itself. He closed the concert with this song - “The Man of Metropolis Steals Our Hearts” - and we were in for a surprise…inflatable Superman dolls fell from the ceiling.

Nice touch, Sufjan. Nice touch.

Not at ALL what I was going to post today, but good ol’ Hype Machine highlighted this little ditty - a mashup of Beastie Boys and Matt & Kim from The Hood Internet - and since I’ve been literally BOUNCING UP AND DOWN at my desk since I’ve listened to it, figured you might need a little cubicle exercise yourself.

Don’t over-exert yourself…there’s a lot of TPS reports still to be completed.

Why Phoenix's "Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix" will be deemed my favorite album of 2009

I didn’t think that Rome, my new favorite song from Phoenix’s “Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix” album, could sound any better than when I heard it live the other week at The Warfield, and then Neighbors with Devendra Banhart came and just blew all of that right out of the water.

To quote Devendra, as written on Phoenix’s blog:

“Like a lazy Ukulele, softly strummed among the ocean side palms, Neighbors and Devendra have longed to remix ANY Phoenix tune.

We LOVE and have LOVED Phoenix since Alphabetical, and have wanted to do more than just ogle at their awesomeness for quite some time. With the release of their luminary Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix we got the chance to un-floccinaucinihilipilificate our dreams and with awesome, oceanic glee, we took Rome for a ride….. a mellow, meditative one, let’s bring out the candle-lit side, a side of the song suited for lucubration ! Cheeze whizz penis feels like a Burberrys still allowed was the name of studio we met at, had we been there before ? Was it all a dream ?………………”

My only wish was that the song was a bit longer, but this ephemeral mix fits well as the days get shorter and we find ourselves longing for just a few more hours of sunlight. Leaves us wanting, which is hauntingly perfect for the Fall.

So here’s the story.

I had heard this song a few times in my car - thank you, Sirius/XMU - and kept thinking that the lead singer of Grizzly Bear sounded REMARKABLY like Michael McDonald. Who, naturally, I love. (Bearded old men from 70’s Yacht Rock bands? YES PLEASE.) I liked the song, but hadn’t yet downloaded the whole album. Then last week I was driving my friend Marshall home, and had commented:

“Isn’t it crazy how much he sounds like Michael [swoon] McDonald?” at which point Marshall looks at me like I’m a dumbass and says,

“Dumbass, that *IS* Michael McDonald.”

Marshall, being often full of total shit and trying to convince me otherwise, wasn’t going to win this one.

“Prove it,” I said.

He did.

Alas, here is Grizzly Bear with Michael McDonald singing lead on their song “While You Wait for the Others”. LOVE IT. (And him.)

I’m heading to Atlanta in a few weeks to visit my friends who I haven’t seen in OVER A YEAR (cue the image of me as the worst. friend. ever.) and my pal Jessica, who has impeccable taste in music, suggested I come in a night early to see one of her favorite acts, LADYHAWKE. If I hadn’t already paid $150 in change fees for this trip, I *SO* would do it, but alas, moving = broke aubrey. Kind of a bummer, that whole financial lameness, especially since I now understand why she suggested I also bring my leg warmers and practice my step-touch with arm movements.

Hmm, maybe it *is* worth the $150 after all…

Last year I went to hear one of my favorite bands, Frightened Rabbit, and the opener was a band named Oxford Collapse. They sounded SO similar to Birdmonster (another one of my favorites) that I had to check to make sure that they hadn’t changed their name. They hadn’t, and while some songs sound quite similar - such as this ditty, “Please Visit Your National Parks”, which sounds a ton like Birdmonster’s “Balcony”, Oxford Collapse kicks ass on their own quite successfully.
