Plucky honey badger takes on pride of lions each 15 times his size - and holds them off for 30 minutes

This is the moment one of the bravest animals in Africa showed why it has so much respect - as it battled a whole pride of lions.

The plucky honey badger was caught out in the open in the Kwando Concession Park, Botswana, and unluckily became the target for a group of lions.

Stranded and weighing just 20lbs the badger decided to fight back against at least four young lions each 15 times its size.

The honey badger's tough hide and surprising strength and ferocity made it a tricky customer for the lions who struggled to deliver the killer bite.

Incredibly the pint-sized battler managed to resist the massive predators' attack for more than 30 minutes.

Wildlife photographer James Haskins watched as the badger kept the lions at bay and eventually had to leave the scene still seeing the badger fighting back.

He said: 'A scene like this is extremely rare to witness, the lions - all young lions by the way - tried their best to kill the young honey badger.

'It was probably their first time to try out their hunting skills on this animal and try as they might, they could not deliver a killer blow.

'The honey badgers skin is so though that the ions could not suffocate it or pull it apart - something lions certainly don't struggle with other less tenacious victims.

'Half an hour passed with the lions biting, chewing, clawing at the badger - but still the young honey badger just kept growling and fighting.

'We left the scene with the lions still passing around the badger between them - none of them knowing what to do to kill the animal.'

Honey badgers are found all over Africa and India and are known for their intelligence and ferocious attitude even when confronted by animals much bigger than them - with documented fights with lions, hyenas and even rhinos.

It is a mustelid and bears some similar characteristics to both a badger and the much smaller weasel.

In popular culture throughout Africa, the animal - also known as a Ratel - is known for its fighting nature and the South African military have a vehicle named after it

One famous South African honey badger named Stoffel was made famous in the BBC2 documentary Honey Badgers: Masters of Mayhem aired on Good Friday this year.

Stoffel repeatedly outfoxed his keepers escaping from his enclosure and even breaking into his owner's house to raid the fridge.

Seven people either crushed to death or electrocuted in French rail crash horror

At least seven people have been killed and 60 seriously injured after a packed passenger train derailed south of Paris this evening.

The high speed intercity train was travelling from the French capital to the city of Limoges when it derailed onto its side in a train station in the suburb of Bretigny-sur-Orge at about 3.15pm GMT.

The accident has left seven people dead, with the victims being crushed to death or electrocuted.

Many passengers desperately scrambled to safety after smashing windows and crawling out while covered in glass and other debris.

Englishman Graham Hope suffered a head injury, saying: ‘The train just started to rock up and down like a bucking bronco and the next thing we hit the station itself. The train bounced up and down dramatically for several seconds.’

The seven carriage train, which ‘split in two’ and then 'buckled', said Mr Hope.

John Paul Martial, who lives opposite the station, said: ‘I heard like a big loud noise, coupled with a great shock, like an earthquake.

‘When I looked, there was a huge plume of smoke billowing above the rails. I was listening to the radio then I realised what had happened.’

Horrific pictures from the scene showed that the train had ploughed into the commuter station, with its carriages partly demolishing a platform.

Bazgua El Mehdi, 19, said: ‘I heard a loud noise and then a cloud of debris covered everything. Then I saw people getting off. One man had was barely conscious, with a bad wound to his head.’

Eyewitness Frederic said he ‘heard the screams’ of passengers caught up in the twisted metal.

The computer programmer, who lives in a building opposite the entrance to the station with his wife Christine, said: ‘We heard a deafening barrage in two stages, first the sound of train wheels that scrape the ballast then a loud crackling of metal.

'Large ballast stones were thrown about ten feet around, falling on adjacent streets. Even our building shook.

‘From my balcony, I saw a cloud of dust rising, then I saw the carnage. I didn’t see any bodies, but I heard the screams. People could be seen running - fleeing from the station.’

She said: 'When I was a little girl, there was this mean boy who was like taller than me and probably older than me and he used to hit me, pull my hair, do all kinds of things to me.'

But as this picture shows, brown bears are also ever so slightly vain.

This young bear was caught out gazing at its own reflection in a Finnish lake

These pictures show the brown bear repeatedly stooping to stare at himself, unaware that photographer Sylwia Domaradska is hiding just yards away.

She captured the pictures in Kainuu, eastern Finland, where there is almost 24-hour daylight during the summer months.

The 37-year-old from London said: 'It totally felt like a dream. It was almost difficult to see where the reflections were starting.

'The bear turned up at around midnight. He came very quietly along the water's edge looking for food.

'It was a fairly young bear, perhaps two or three years old. He was very cautious as at this age he'd need to be careful about females with cubs, and older males.

'He seemed to look at his own reflection - as he stayed in the same place for a while.'

Miss Domaradska said when the bear began moving around the edge of the lake he continued looking in.

'It really was quite amusing to see - and then he was gone,' she said.

'The conditions were absolutely perfect for this kind of image.

'The reflections were perfectly still and the line between the reflections and actual trees being reflected created very little blur.

'I had actually gone out with the intention of taking a different image. I was hoping to see bears bathing and splashing in the water but instead, this happened.

'But it didn't turn out too bad, did it?'

The bizarre PINK lakes from around the world that look like milkshakes due to a freak of nature

They look as though someone has tipped in a load of pink dye while no one was looking.

But in fact these pink lakes are a natural phenomenon and not only draw visitors from far and wide but also provide livelihoods to local people.

From the vibrant Lake Hillier, on Middle Island in the Recherche Archipelago, in Western Australia, to a protected pink nature reserve bordering a Spanish city, these shots show how something considered unpleasant - algae - can look so beautiful.

Pink lakes tend to have a striking colour due to the presence of algae that produces carotenoids, such as Dunaliella Salina, a type of halophile green micro-algae especially found in sea salt fields.

Once the lake water reaches a salinity level greater than that of sea water, the temperature is high enough and adequate light conditions are provided, the alga begins to accumulate the red pigment beta carotene.

In Senegal, Lake Retba, in the Cap Vert peninsula of the country, has such a high concentration of salt - 40 per cent - that is harvested by local people.

The lake is dotted with salt collectors working up to seven hours a day, using long shovels to pile boats high with the mineral.

To protect their skin from the water they rub their skin with Shea butter.

Western Australia's Lake Hillier is perhaps more striking since it is surrounded by lush vegetation.

The lake, on Middle Island, the largest of the islands and islets that make up the Recherche Archipelago, spans only about 600 meters wide but its rose pink colour is unmistakable.

Canada's Dusty Rose Lake, in British Columbia is pink due to the particulate in the glacial melt waters feeding it. The surrounding rock is purple/pink in colour; the water feeding the lake is said to have a lavender hue.

Perhaps the most unusually located pink lakes are in south west Spain, where two large salt-water lakes sit adjacent to the city of Torrevieja.

The Salinas de Torrevieja (meaning Salt Pans of Torrevieja) turn pink when sunlight falls on the algae-rich waters.

The lakes are now protected national parks and are a haven for migratory birds, divers flora and fauna.

Many countries from around the world have pink lakes, including Senegal, Canada, Spain, Australia and Azerbaijan.

And according to reports she can’t wait to get back in the gym and regain her slim figure.

‘She’s already looking ahead to when she can exercise again,’ a source told Us Weekly.

Another added: ‘She really wants to get back into shape. It’s important to her.’

Kim, 32, was working with trainer to the stars Tracy Anderson throughout her pregnancy, but the publication also claims she is considering hiring Gunnar Peterson.

Gunnar is responsible for helping Kim’s younger sister Khloe, 28, with her recent 25lbs weight loss.

While she is not able to start exercising just yet, Kim is allegedly already watching what she eats.

The magazine claims that the star’s hospital room is chock-a-block with flowers but she has insisted well-wishers are not allowed to bring any tasty treats for her to eat.

‘She has over 30 bouquets from loved ones,’ a source said. ‘She told everyone not to bring sweets – she said she doesn’t need any temptations.’

It is believed that Kim and her daughter, whose name is yet to be revealed, will stay in hospital until the baby, who was born five weeks prematurely, reaches five pounds.

And the curvy brunette was so brave in dealing with the terrifying ordeal that her often absent beau, 36, is now desperate to marry her as soon as possible.

'They'll start planning their next project, a wedding, sooner rather than later,' a source told People.

'He definitely wants to marry her, he hasn't left her side.'

While their recently purchased $9million Bel Air home is being renovated, Kim and baby will be staying with her mother Kris Jenner and Kanye has also agreed to move in.

A source told HollywoodLife.com that the New Slaves hitmaker thinks the move is 'a good idea'.

The insider added: 'All that's going to happen is that the family is going to wait on Kim hand-and-foot and do everything around the house while she and Kanye just chill with the baby. That sounds like a deal. It's like first class service all the way at Kim's mom's house.'

The source also said: 'They want to take their girl home and love her and begin this journey together.

Thai pet store owner arrested after animals including 14 albino lions are found in warehouse

Police in Bangkok have arrested a pet shop owner after finding a menagerie of illegally imported animals during a swoop on a warehouse outside the city.

Thai officers found 14 albino lions from Africa and hundreds of other protected animals including birds, meerkats, tortoises, peafowls, capuchin monkeys and other species from overseas and Thailand, a police spokesman said.

Colonel Ek Ekasart said Montri Boonprom-on, 41, faced charges of possessing wildlife and carcasses, and he could face up to four years in jail and a fine of 40,000 baht (£830 or $1,300).

Ek said Montri owned an exotic pet shop at Bangkok's renowned Chatuchak weekend market and had been convicted of wildlife trading before.

Montri told reporters the lions were shipped legally and were waiting to be transferred to a zoo in Thailand's northeast.

He did not explain the discrepancy between his documents showing that he had imported 16 lions, and the fact that police had only found 14 of them at his warehouse in a residential area of Bangkok's Klong Sam Wa district.

Thailand is a hub of the international black market in protected animals. While the country is signed up to a convention regulating international trade in endangered species, Thai law does not extend protection to many alien species.

Other species seized included baboons, tortoises, sugar gliders and peacocks. Police also found a hornbill and a leopard, both protected by Thai law, which were packed in a box and were scheduled to be delivered to clients on Monday.

The police spokesman said: 'We have been monitoring the location for a few days after the neighbors complained about the noise from the animals, and if you looked through the gate, you could spot lions in the cage.'

The animals were confiscated and are being looked after by the Department of Natural Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation.

The EleMMent Palazzo is a 40ft creation for the super-rich that Marchi Mobile says "represents exclusivity and extravagance that requires no explanation."

The Palazzo's space-age styling means that the cabin looks like something out of Star Trek, with a circular central window complete with three windscreen wipers.

A central staircase carries those on board to the vehicle's upper deck. The fixtures and fitting are akin to those in a luxury hotel.

The master bedroom has a 40in TV, heated floor and air-conditioning.

Marchi Mobile says the Palazzo's design "unites characteristics from motor, yachting and aviation sports".

If its styling isn't bold enough, buyers can opt for an eye-catching gold finish.

At night, the Palazzo's interior lighting gives it the air of a nightclub. Guests can look at the night sky through the full-length sunroof.

Despite benig the same size as a bus, the Palazzo can't carry as many passengers. Those on board sit in the lap of luxury, however.

Remote video access allows owners to monitor the vehicle's exterior and interior at all times. They can also pre-set the lighting and temperature for their return to the vehicle.

The Palazzo represents "a new class within the premium segment of vehicles, targeted to enthuse lovers of the extraordinary and visionaries that are stylistically at ease", says Marchi Mobile.

It says the interior "is just as extravagant as its owner", with a minimalistic design that uses "modern shapes fused with classy and antique design elements".

The Palazzo is popular among oil-rich Arab Sheikhs, who can easily afford the vehicle's £2 million price.

Swapping cakes for foods can stop disease spreading

Swapping to vegetable oils and nuts may increase a man’s chances of surviving prostate cancer.

A study found that those diagnosed with the disease early had a lower risk of the cancer spreading if they replaced animal fats found in processed foods – such as cake and pastries – with healthy vegetable fats.

One serving of oil-based salad dressing a day, equivalent to one tablespoon, was linked with a 29 per cent lower risk of potentially lethal prostate cancer and a 13 per cent lower chance of dying from any cause.

The US authors stressed the research involving 4,577 prostate cancer patients had revealed an association and could not necessarily prove a diet rich in oils and nuts was the cause.

In an online paper published by the journal JAMA Internal Medicine, they wrote: ‘Overall, our findings support counselling men with prostate cancer to follow a heart-healthy diet in which carbohydrate calories are replaced with unsaturated oils and nuts to reduce the risk of all-cause mortality.’

Of the men with prostate cancer enrolled into the study, around a fifth died from the disease over a period of about eight years. Another 31 per cent died from heart disease and almost 21 per cent from other cancers.

At the time they were recruited, all the men had non-metastatic prostate cancer, meaning the disease had not yet spread.

Information about the patients’ dietary habits was collected from questionnaires.

Swapping animal fats and carbohydrates for healthy vegetable fats, including olive and canola oil as well as oils from nuts, seeds and avocados, was found to have a significant impact on disease progression and death.

Men who replaced 10 per cent of their daily carbohydrate consumption with vegetable fats had a 29 per cent lower risk of developing deadly prostate cancer and a 26 per cent reduced risk of dying from any cause.

The study also showed that eating an ounce of nuts a day led to an 18 per cent lower risk of lethal prostate cancer and an 11 per cent lower risk of death.

Dr Erin Richman, from the University of California at San Francisco, said: ‘Consumption of healthy oils and nuts increases plasma (blood) antioxidants and reduces insulin and inflammation, which may deter prostate cancer progression.’

Chinese passenger jet hits mysterious object at 26,000ft and lands with severely dented nose cone

A passenger jet was forced to make an emergency landing after a mysterious mid-air collision with a 'foreign object' at 26,000ft severely dented its nose cone.

The front of the Air China Boeing 757 had been pushed in and scratches and scraped paintwork were clearly visible when it landed.

The plane was climbing over China when a large bang was heard from the front of aircraft.

The pilot said the aircraft was struggling to perform and he immediately called air traffic controllers, according to reports.

He was then allowed him to return to the airport.

Experts said investigations into the suspected crash have raised suspicions that the aircraft was hit by a 'foreign object'.

However, they do not believe it was caused by a bird strike as no blood or feathers were visible on the dented nose cone.

The damage was only spotted when the plane, which was travelling from Chengdu to Guangzhou, safely landed.

The pictures have prompted online speculation that it was caused by a UFO or a drone strike.

Other theories posted on the Aviation Herald include pressure from rapidly heated and expanded air.

Former government UFO investigator Nick Pope told The Sun that an examination of the nose cone should reveal what hit it.

He said traces of whatever collided with the aircraft should be visible.

However, he questioned whether the 'secretive' Chinese would reveal the cause.

Mr Pope told The Sun: 'Cases like this show that whatever people believe about UFOs, there are serious air safety issues here.

'MoD and CAA files contain dozens of reports of near misses between UFOs and commercial aircraft.

'It's only a matter of time before there's a catastrophe.'

No one was hurt in the mysterious incident.

Last week, it emerged that three passenger jet pilots saw UFOs above Britain's Scientology headquarters on their approach to Gatwick Airport.

A report revealed that they each saw 'two flat, silver discs', with some flying within 100ft.

Air traffic control then spotted six UFOs on their radars before they suddenly disappeared.

The encounter, which was probed by the UK Airprox Board, happened on December 30 just before 9am over the Scientology headquarters in East Grinstead, Sussex.

As it swoops in on a fish in Juneau, Alaska, the bird got far more than he bargained for but showed he was quick enough to get away unscathed.

Mr Oliver a 41-year-old bank clerk, was on a family holiday when he took the amazing shots.

He said: 'It made our whole holiday to see this - it was such a sight.

'Me, my wife Christina and my daughter Makenzie were out on a nature expedition and were actually watching whales - humpback and orca killer whales.

'Sea lions like to play with fish before they eat it and my wife spotted the sea lion coming.

'From out of nowhere, the eagle swooped down all in the space of ten seconds and that's when all the action happened.

'I've been doing photography for four years and I've got a long way to go but I joked it's almost worth stopping now as it doesn't get any better than that.'

Tamara has reportedly booked out all 73 rooms of the five-star hotel, one of the most luxurious on the French Riviera, at a cost of £600,000.

The socialite, 28, and her city broker fiance, 33, flew into nearby Nice on Sunday ahead of their big day, with the celebrations expected to span three days.

Tamara's usually busy Twitter account has been strangely quiet since last Thursday, suggesting she has been too busy or nervous to update her micro-blogging page.

Also spotted flying into France was model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley - one of the famous names expected to attend.

Also rumoured to be on the coveted list includes Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, their mother Sarah Ferguson, and American socialite Paris Hilton.

An average car tyre will travel around 20,000 miles over its lifetime, but when they have reached the end of their life in Kuwait... they are destined for the tyre graveyard.

In Kuwait City's Sulaibiya area every year gigantic holes are dug out out in the sandy earth and filled with old tyres - there are now over seven million in the ground.

The expanse of rubber is so vast that the sizable indents on the earth are now visible from space.

It is thought the tyres are from both Kuwait and other countries which have paid for them to be taken away - four companies are in charge of the disposal and are thought to make a substantial amount from the disposal fees.

The European landfill directive means that this type of 'waste disposal would be illegal in Europe - since 2006 EU rules have banned the disposal of tyres in landfill sites, leaving about 480,000 tonnes of recyclable shredded rubber each year

In Britain all car and truck tyres must be recovered, recycled and reused.

Currently, more than 80 per cent of the 55 million used tyres generated in Britain are processed via the Responsible Recycler Scheme.

The scheme ensures full traceability and accountability of waste tyres throughout the disposal chain, from collection through to their final reuse in an environmentally friendly or acceptable method.

Materials from properly recycled tyres are used for a variety of uses including a children’s playground, running tracks, artificial sports pitches, fuel for cement kilns, carpet underlay, equestrian arenas and flooring.

Bales of tyres can be used in the construction of modern engineered landfill sites and flood defences. If waste tyres are in good condition, they can be re-moulded and put back on the road as ‘re-treads’.

In 2010, just over 30 per cent of waste tyres were turned into crumb, 18 per cent were used in energy recovery, nearly 20 per cent were re-used (in the UK or abroad), 16 per cent were specifically used in landfill engineering and 11 per cent were re-treaded, according to the Environment Agency.

In some circumstances tyres are shipped out to countries such as India, Pakistan and Malaysia, but there are strict laws about their exportation.

The Environment Agency says 'While there is a legitimate export market for quality recyclable material, the illegal export of waste undermines law-abiding disposal and tyre recovery businesses here in the UK and risks harming people and the environment in the country the waste is exported to.'

Last month it emerged that recycled car tyres could soon be used to surface roads across the country after a pioneering trial found they made roads quieter.

One of the busiest roads in Scotland was resurfaced last year with the asphalt, containing shredded rubber from old tyres.

Tests were performed on grip and skid resistance, with engineers reporting that the rubber road, on a stretch of dual carriageway between Perth and Dundee, resulted in a quieter drive.

Experts claim the road requires less maintenance and still allows for drainage, while tyre recyclers claim the technique will also save money because the new material is thinner than standard roads.

Rubber roads were first built in the 1960s in the US, where today there are 20,000 miles of road made of recycled tyres.

Rubber roads are also popular in China, Brazil, Spain and Germany. The technique has been found to cut traffic noise by about 25 per cent.

The asphalt is made by breaking down used tyres into rubber ‘crumbs’ which are added to bitumen and crushed stone, which are typically used to make asphalt.

Last year a fire broke out in a Kuwait tyre dump which was so big that it could be seen from space.

The fire broke out on April 17 at a tire dump near Al Jahrah.

It is believed that around five million tires fuelled the fire which specialists struggled to control. Hundreds of firefighters as well as soldiers and employees of the Kuwait Oil Company took part in the efforts to extinguish the blaze.

A number of MPs described the fire as an 'environmental catastrophe' and vowed to demand a debate on the issue in a special parliamentary session Some said they will demand an official probe.

A month later another fire broke out at an Amghara scrapyard and firefighters from six stations were drafted into help.

Tyre fires are difficult to extinguish - they produce a lot of smoke, which often carries toxic chemicals from the breakdown of rubber compounds while burning.

Drink three litres of water a day or risk kidney stones, warns expert

Thousands of new cases of kidney stones every year are caused by ignorance or denial of the need to drink three litres of water a day, according to a leading doctor.

Bhaskar Somani, a consultant urological surgeon at Southampton General Hospital, said a lack of awareness about the dangers of dehydration was responsible for an annual increase in renal stone admissions, including among young people in their twenties.

'The number of people admitted to hospital suffering severe pain and discomfort due to kidney stones is increasing by between 5 per cent and 10 per cent every year,' he said.

'Over the past decade, the number of hospital admissions for renal stones in the UK rose by 63 per cent to more than 80,000 and there is no sign of these numbers letting up.'

Kidney stones develop when crystals of salt gather into lumps and are not flushed out of the body due to a lack of adequate hydration, often lodging in the urinary system's tubes.

They can cause severe abdominal and groin pain which, in many cases, can only be corrected through surgery.

The condition affects about 10 to 20 per cent of men and 3 to 5 per cent of women between the ages of 30 and 60.

At Southampton General Hospital, the number of patients admitted to hospital every month has almost doubled - a trend Mr Somani said would continue without intervention.

'The only way to drive this down is to drive home the message that healthy lifestyle, diet and fluid intake is the best way to prevent the development and recurrence of stones,' he said.

'With evidence that 50 per cent of patients treated are likely to have a recurrence within ten years, largely due to complacency around hydration within a few years of having surgery, we know we face an uphill battle to change the national mindset, but we must make a start.'

Mr Somani said all adults should aim to drink between two to three litres of water a day, while former stone patients should maintain a daily intake upwards of three litres to avoid recurrence.

He has also called for the introduction of a screening programme for all high risk patients - those with diabetes, gout or inflammatory bowel disease - and regular monitoring of people who suffered their first incidence of stones under the age of 25.

Dramatic video footage captures the moment a bear is sent flying into the air after being hit by a car - before walking away apparently unharmed.

The footage, which was taken from inside the vehicle as it was driven along a highway, believed to be in Russia, shows the animal walking across the road before being hit.

After smashing violently onto the car's bonnet, the bear is sent rolling into dirt by the side of the road - but simply rights itself and scampers off into the forest.

The video, captured and uploaded by YouTube user Stanislav SS, has become an internet hit.

It is unclear exactly where the collision took place, but bears, particularly brown bears, are found across Russia.

Many Russian drivers attach cameras to their dashboards to record accidents. The practice is thought to be influenced by a lack of public confidence in the country's traffic police.

Driving in Russia is relatively dangerous, with 200,000 traffic accidents in 2011 alone, according to the Business Insider.

Adult brown bears generally weigh between 220 and 1,400lb and are covered in a thick layer of muscle and fat.

East Siberian brown bears are usually darker with a proportionately larger skull than other varieties.

Bears have played a key role in Russian culture and folklore for centuries - and have been used at times as a symbol of the Russian state.

Four elephants killed when they are hit by a TRAIN

Four elephants have been killed after they became trapped on a railway line and were hit by a speeding train.

The elephants were part of a herd crossing the railroad tracks in eastern India when the express passenger train ploughed into them.

Two adult female elephants and one calf were killed at the scene while another died later from its injuries.

They were hit by the Mahananda Express Passenger train early today in Jalpaiguri district, nearly 400 miles east of Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal state.

The track, which connects Siliguri to Assam, was closed down for several hours after the collision, as other elephants were guarding the dead and injured animals.

Nearby villagers attempted to join in the rescue effort but could not save the two adult female elephants and one calf which died at the scene.

A crane was even needed to remove the carcass of one of the elephants.

Railway spokesman Jayant Sharma said the accident site was outside the state's elephant corridor and there was no warning from the forest department about the movement of the elephants.

Dozens of elephants have died in recent years in such accidents as trains run through national parks and forests. Activists have called for trains to lower their speeds through such areas.

India's wild elephant population was recently estimated at about 26,000.

Buddhist cuddles up to deadly big cat

When temperatures reaching a stifling 37 degrees, even these well-adapted tigers need to find a way of escaping the heat.

The beautiful big cats are pictured at the controversial Tiger Temple in Kanchanaburi, Thailand, where around 100 live alongside Buddhist monks.

Many were brought to the reserve as cubs and have grown up around humans. But even so these pictures show just how remarkably close these fearsome creatures can get to their keepers.

An adult tiger is, at first, sprawled out on the ground sunbathing, but then cuddles up close to one of his fellow residents in the shade.

Elsewhere, a young tiger was spotted happily playing around in a pool of water with a fascinating new toy.

Along with soaring temperatures, the humidity in Thailand can reach an exhausting 90 per cent in the summer months.

Founded in 1994, the Tiger Temple has attracted criticism from some wildlife groups who claim it is an illegal breeding facility and that the tigers are not sufficiently cared for.

The first cub arrived in 1999 after her mother was killed by poachers nearby.

She died, but others have since arrived and the tiger population has gradually grown. The centre has become a tourist attraction where visitors can pay a fee to have their picture taken alongside the animals.

The organistion insists that it is a legitimate conservation centre, that the animals are well-cared for and that the aim is to release them back into the wild in the future.

Baby 59's mother will not face criminal charges

The mother of a newborn baby rescued from a sewer pipe in eastern China will not face criminal charges, authorities have said.

The little boy – known only as Baby 59 – has been released into his grandparents' care, the official China News Service reported, citing police. Earlier reports said his mother had custody.

His case sparked a wave of sympathy around the world when footage of his rescue by firefighters and medics emerged. At first, officials in Pujiang county, Zhejiang province, said they were treating it as attempted murder, believing that he had been abandoned.

But they have now concluded that he was trapped by accident, after it emerged that the resident who raised the alarm was in fact his mother. The unmarried 22-year-old had hidden her pregnancy and secretly delivered the baby on Saturday in the shared bathroom; she said he had slipped into the squat toilet by accident.

An official in Pujiang county's propaganda office told Associated Press on Thursday that police concluded the woman did not initially identify herself as the mother out of fright.

Zhang Jianbo, the head of Punan police station, told China News Service that the woman's parents were now caring for the baby, who suffered minor cuts and bruises but is otherwise healthy. He added that the man believed to be the father had been found and that a paternity test would be carried out.

Earlier, authorities told AP that the baby had been released into the care of his mother and a man claiming to be his father, while Xinhua said that both the mother and her parents would care for him.

Wellwishers had inundated officials with offers to adopt the little boy.

"Even if some other people wanted to adopt this baby, since his mother is still there, it would be a very complicated and hard process for other people to adopt him," said Xiong Bingqi, deputy director of the independent 21st Century Education Research Institute.

But he said the baby's care would not be supervised by social workers, as would be expected elsewhere.

"The baby returns to her. This case is done," he said.

"This case shows our child protection law is struggling … If the government removes the baby from its parents, they should take responsibility for caring for him. But the government's allocated funds are limited and charity organisations can only receive a certain number of children, when their parents cannot be found.

"If the children have parents, the government prefers to ask their parents to take the responsibility. The local government does not have enough funding to establish a social security system to help those children when their parents are not doing a good job."

Local media earlier reported that the woman became pregnant after a one-night stand and that the father had denied paternity. She told officials she could not afford an abortion and had hidden her pregnancy from her parents.

While premarital sex is common in China, unmarried motherhood still bears a stigma. Critics say sex education is also inadequate.

Crocodile eats man, leaves head in river

A CROCODILE devoured a man as he fished in an eastern Indonesian river but left his head floating in the water where it was discovered by his distraught family, police said Thursday.

Sam Sem Ledo, a father of 11, set off on Tuesday to go fishing for crabs in the Amabi river in Kupang district on Timor island.

But the 53-year-old had not returned home by the following day, so several of his family members accompanied by police began searching for him.

At first they spotted a basket of crabs, his fishing gear and flip-flops - but then came face-to-face with his head floating in an estuary, said local detective Bonifasius Rumbewas.

"We were able to identify him because of the head," added local police chief Mochammad Slamet, who said that other body parts, including intestines, were also found in the water.

Police did not say which of the man's family members were involved in the search

Mr Slamet said Ledo had been killed by a saltwater crocodile, and that the area was infested with them.

In the past year and a half, at least five people had been killed by crocodiles in the district, added Mr Slamet.

He urged people "to be aware that they are living near a crocodile habitat and take extra care".

The huge Indonesian archipelago is home to a vast array of exotic wildlife, including several species of crocodile.

The BFFs, who went on their fair share of dates during the last series, have been spotted wearing a number of different bikinis over the last week, having clearly packed a bulging suitcase full of them.

Making the most of their topped up tans, the girls accompanied each other to the all-white Marbella party on Tuesday night, holding hands as they arrived.

Abi wore a tiny white and silver bandeau dress while Jasmin wore a low-cut lace dress with a feathered skirt, matched with towering heels.

But in real-life Hayden Panettiere is clearly far from difficult, although she seems to have picked up something from the world of country music – a love of denim.

The 23-year-old was spotted walking through the airport in Los Angeles on Wednesday without a spot of make-up on looking youthful and beautiful while wearing a denim waistcoat and jeans.

While her character may spend a lot of time fussing over her looks and concentrating on her appearance, it clearly isn’t an issue for the actress.

Hayden showed she really is a natural beauty as she made her way grinning through the airport, looking her age.

Her hair was pulled off her face in a messy bun and her face had a healthy bronzed glow to it, despite the fact she had just been on a drying aeroplane.

The petite star wore a pair of skintight blue jeans with a white hoodie, over the top of which she wore a denim waistcoat.

Opting for comfort she wore a pair of brown knee high boots which appeared a little worn, no doubt after a few years of wear and tear.

Hayden was heading home just as the finale of the first series of the show aired, perhaps looking forward to spending time with her boyfriend Wladimir Klitschko.

Her portrayal of the ruthless and ambitious Juliette on Nashville has earned her scores of praise.

The show follows Juliette as she tries to usurp a forty-something country music superstar, played by Connie Britton, whose success is on the downslide.

The series is shot on location in the Tennessee city, where Panettiere has happily relocated from Los Angeles.

‘There’s a real feeling of community and Southern hospitality,’ Hayden said. ‘It feels much more genuine than LA and I have never had an easier time making friends.’

It’s lucky she feels so at home down south as the TV station has just picked up the show for a second season.
