The Woman in Black & The Woman in Front

The freedom of having a car is fantastic and something I took full advantage of this week when at the spur of the moment I suggested to Peter that we head to the cinema to see The Woman in Black. A story that has terrified me for a good while now, having seen the old ITV version and the stage play, I was pretty sure there would be points I'd find myself hiding from the screen in this new one. Unfortunately though I found myself hiding from something else entirely!

At the start of the trailers, the Woman in Front had her iPhone out texting. Fair enough I thought its only the trailers and she'll probably turn it off when the film starts.
I couldn't have been more wrong! All the way through the film she was either texting or updating her Facebook status. I eventually had enough and put my feet up on the seat in front and slouched down a bit in order to hide myself from the light of her phone, although she had kindly turned the brightness down before the film started, it really didn't make much of a difference!

This is something I've been experiencing more and more often and it really is getting beyond a joke. What is it with these people that they can't go 90 minutes without their phone or Facebook? Someone please tell me. Do they not think that the light will distract other movie goers? do they care? or do they even know?

I know I wasn't the only one distracted, so my question is would it be frowned upon if I had the guts to kindly tell her to turn it off as it is distracting?

My other question is, where the hell did all the staff go? I remember cinemas always had an usher in to make sure there was no recording or noise. What happened to that? In the theatre its expected of me to 'Sssshh' people if they're making too much noise and to tell them to turn their phones off. Surely there is something cinema staff can do?

Normally if it's only one person with a phone I'm ok and can just about bear it, but when it comes to a movie like the Woman in Black that uses sound and silence to build up tension, having someone texting and gabbing to their mate about said text can ruin the whole moment!
The thing I don't understand the most is this. The cinema can cost quite a bit now, so why do folk pay good money to go see a movie that they are going to ignore by playing with their phone?? Go home and watch telly!

As for the movie itself, it was pretty good. Different from the old one and the play and not quite as scary, but still enjoyable. And yes I did eventually end up hiding behind my knees... that bloody rocking chair!!

Despite looking a bit young for the role, Daniel Radcliffe did really well and I hope he does more roles like this as time goes on. Sound is used really well, making it feel like an old fashioned horror movie. It made me think of the original version of The Haunting which pretty much used sound and sound alone to scare the pants off the audience!!

So if you like a good scare then its worth seeing, just sit down the front so no one with a phone can shine it in your eyes!

If you want to see it, I'd recommend the 1989 version of the Woman in Black too and if you ever get the chance to see the play, go for it and enjoy being scared!! (Just don't do what I did at work and sit at the back)

My First Car

I finally did it. In January I finally passed my driving test and on Saturday I bought my first car!
With the help of my Dad I bought a 1997 1.0L Volkswagen Polo, ok so its not the Volkswagen Bus I've dreamed of, but it IS a Volkswagen and I love it!

When I drove it (her? people keep telling me to name it a girls name) it felt amazing. Finally the freedom I knew I'd get when I owned a car. You couldn't wipe the grin of my and Peter's faces as we casually and freely drove to Tesco to get Petrol and an air freshener. It was a fantastic feeling!!

Now... ROAD TRIP!!

Ode to Special FX and the Oscars

It's been a week or so since I watched the Oscar nominations being announced and for the first time I wasn't really interested.

I'll admit I haven't seen all the movies, but you could kind of tell what was going to be nominated. My main bug about them is the amount of nominations War Horse got. Now I loved the book and being a fan of Spielberg I was really looking forward to the movie. I was, however pretty disappointed and couldn't believe the press rated it so highly, but then if its Spielberg, Scorcese or Woody Allen they tend to love it no matter what.

War Horse was brilliantly shot, the cinematography was beautiful and Peter Mullen was subtly great as Alberts father, but it just felt a bit rushed and at two and a half hours I don't understand why. I didn't feel the connection to Joey and Albert that I had in the book or find myself caring too much about them finding each other. War Horse was good, but that's it and it's certainly not one of the best films released in the last year. I just hope the adaptation of Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close will be much better.

As time goes on I've been less and less interested in the main categories and more interested in the ones that don't get shown in the UK broadcast. Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Visual FX, and the Animation awards.
I love seeing these categories as this is where films that get ignored for the big awards get recognition for their skills and these are the folk that really make movies special!

I studied animation in uni and did a bit of Special FX so I understand (a bit) how certain effects are done, but I am still amazed by the things I see in films now. Nominated this year for Best Visual FX are Hugo, Real Steel, Transformers, Rise of the Planet of the Apes and of course Harry Potter. I've seen all but Hugo and think the effects were brilliant. Harry Potter's visuals have come so far since the 1st film which is fantastic, same with Transformers. Real Steel was a huge surprise - I knew that I'd like it, but I was surprised as to how enjoyable it really was. Planet of the Apes was a given as I loved the original, but again surprised at how much I enjoyed it and the explanation to how it all kicked off was brilliant. The effects just enhance the stories and really immerse real life with imagination!

Now I have heard the words "the special FX are rubbish" (with reference to Transformers) escape the mouth of an animator, among others and I have to say this really winds me up.
Now I understand that action/sci fi/giant robots/wizards and apes taking over the world might not be you're thing, fair enough, but at lest give the FX guys and gals some credit! They make the impossible possible and believable. The integration and compositing is just incredible! Muchos credit to the sound teams too - every punch Atom took in Real Steel made me wince.

I know some folk don't believe it or agree, but what effects artists do takes skill and talent and they work long, hard hours in front of a screen constantly getting every detail spot on.

Special FX and animation have come a long way since Windsor McKay and Orson Welles and we should embrace the evolution of film making. I honestly don't worry about old methods being forgotten and lost as I truly believe that they won't be. People like Georges Méliès, Ray Harryhausen and the wonderful Stan Winston made movies great and their magic will be remembered and treasured forever!

Thought I'd share this funny video too, it doesn't just apply to VFX folk, living with an animator has proved that! Do it myself sometimes when working with Illustrator. Enjoy :D Beware - there is some swearing!!

The Boys Are Back In Town

Or should I say birds...
I heard a lovely sound this morning - birds singing. Winter is over and Spring is on the way. Although someone really should tell the weather in Scotland!

This means that the dark evenings are coming to an end and my over active imagination can stop freaking out about the zombie horde or werewolf that could possibly come crashing through the creepy bushes beside the bus stop as I wait for a driver to (possibly) pick me up. Yes, these things do cross my mind and I believe it was an over exposure to horror movies when I was a child! Michael Jackson & John Landis are mainly to blame for these fears! Can you guess why??

This time of year always brings thoughts of travel to my mind and I long for any one of the number of places I'd love to see, South Africa, Budapest, Vancouver, Disney World, the steps that Rocky runs up in Philadelphia!

Budapest - The most beautiful city I have ever seen!

In true movie lover fashion, most of my dream destinations have been influenced by my favourite films. - Disney and the Lion King are fully responsible for my love of Africa and I know I'll get there someday, but I thought I'd share a different travel dream with you today.

It came out of a conversation between my other half and I. Both of us would like to go to San Francisco to visit Pixar and thought it would be cool to see Alcatraz too and then we got talking about a certain Michael Bay film. Now I should point out that we are both big fans of Mr Bay and action movies in general and are openly mocked for this by quite a few people, but we are proud of our movie nerd status' and continue watching our mindless, but amazingly shot action films all the same!
Anywhoo, one of the best action movies of all time, in my opinion, is The Rock . As Peter and I got to know each other, we discovered a joint love of Nic Cage, Michael Bay movies, the music of Hans Zimmer and the film itself, so it's kind of a personal movie for us and therefore would make a brilliant theme to our dream trip to the West Coast of America.

We would visit the Palace of Arts, the Fairmont Hotel, The Golden Gate Bridge and of course Alcatraz. We'd also visit Pixar in Emmeryville and possibly swing by LA in a quick homage to Die Hard too!

After that, we'd come home and start planning our Die Hard With a Vengence/Rocky trip of the East Coast!

This is all in our dreams of course and we're going to have to wait a good while until we could ever afford a trip to San Francisco, I think a lottery win would definitely come in handy!

So with that I would like to wish all you lucky people making travel plans - Happy Trails and Yippe Kai Yay!

I thought I'd share a quick doodle I did last night!

Was feeling a bit blue this week and needed some cheering up. After reading 2 inspiring posts by fellow bloggers Gisele and Leanne, I picked myself up, found a funny post on my other half's Rival Animation Facebook group and drew this.

I have to say, I've not been happier with one of my own creations for a while. I've been happy with commissions, but not my personal work. I find this amazing, that something so daft and silly can make me a happy bunny again!

A Proper Introduction for 2012

What do I love more than designing, watching movies, discussing movies and geeking out about said things? Nothing! Which is why I want this blog to be a great place for folk interested in them too. I do plan to chuck in some things about my life, work, things I’m doing and experiencing and hopefully some guest posts from lovely readers (just ask).

Hopefully the blog will evolve into something informative and entertaining that readers find interesting and want to come back to.

I hope you will stay with me as I learn the ropes of blogging and how to be successful at it.

I'm also on a mission to teach myself all about the joys and skills of Social Media. I'm picking it up through my new job and getting to grips with how to make it work. It's all new to me, but really very interesting and I've got some lovely folk helping me along the way.

The wonderful Leanne MacDuff has been fantastic in helping me get started and has also introduced me to the fab Gisele N. Mendez. Both of these lovely ladies have given me more of an insight in the last 2 weeks than any of the books I've read and continue to read. I suppose it's easier to see it put in to practice and working in real time than it is reading about it and blindly trying it for yourself. So a massive thanks to both of you. I would also recommend both of their blogs - they're great way to start a working day with a cup of tea!

The Sherlock Holmes Challenge

After the 1st series of Sherlock on the BBC and the first movie I decided to get a hold of the complete works of Sherlock Homes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and start reading them.
When I bought my Kindle in May last year I did get a hold of them, but got caught up in the ridiculously addictive Langdon books by Dan Brown and the Millenium Trilogy!

So on the 1st of January I made only 1 New Years Resolution and that was to read the Sherlock collection, but again I got caught up in... ahem, Lego Harry Potter. I got it for Christmas I couldn't help myself!

Anyway, now that the 2nd series of Sherlock is finished and I've seen and loved the 2nd movie I promised myself that I would finally read them and enrich my life with the work of Sir Conan Doyle. And so begins my own Sherlock challenge.

I was thinking of setting myself a time limit, but I've never kept track of how long it takes me to read. I can obsess over a book and get it done in a week while other times it will take months.
2011 was a pretty eventful year book-wise as I read 13 in total, and like I said earlier, was obsessed with the Millenium Trilogy and stormed through them. The Hobbit was another fantastic read. I'd never read it before, but I LOVED Lord of the Rings and what with the film out in December thought it was about time I read it. It was so enjoyable that I might just read it again before December.

I don't think I could pick a favourite from last year as I read so many good ones. I couldn't put most down, but I have to admit The Black Dahlia was a tough read. It was just so dark and pretty brutal with some description. The fact that I was playing LA Noire at the same time and just had to research the story it was based on didn't make it any easier.
The most surprising book last year was Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. It was so different and enjoyable and much better than Pride & Prejudice with Zombies. And now there's a film on the way with none other than the brilliant Alan Tudyk involved -Amazeballs! If you like graphic novels, vampirey things (proper vamps not Twilight "vamps") and action books, then its a must. It was fun and pretty interesting. After reading, off I went again to do some research on Abraham Lincoln and it works well with the history, making it even more fun.

I've found myself doing this a few times now after reading a book. I have to go and research any truth that is involved. Dan Brown's books are so convincing that I had to go and look in to different religious beliefs and articles about the Goddess and all sorts and it actually changed my perceptions a bit. Not that I've taken in any of the books as solid truths, much the same as I don't take religion as solid truths, but the books did make me think and that's what a good book/movie/TV show or doc should do!

2010 was a good year for my literary adventures too. I got all the Harry Potter books under my belt just in time for the new movie and rekindled my love of Bryce Courtenay with The Potato Factory and Tommo & Hawk which led to me starting 2011 with Jessica, still to read Solomon's Song though. (cue research in to the development and history of Australia)

Anyway, back to my challenge. There are 9 books with 59 stories of Holmes and I think I could get them done by the end of Summer. I've already read A Study in Scarlet and loved it!

I had read a review that said it was the worst of the Holmes adventures as Arthur Conan Doyle was young and hadn't fully developed as a writer. I thought that was a bit harsh as I believe that, as with all creative folk, you never stop developing and learning. If A Study in Scarlet is what someone calls a bad Sherlock book, then I must be in for a treat as I get further on with the collection.

Pixar's Brave and Scotland

Last week I read an interesting article about Pixar's new movie Brave and how it could boost Scotland's tourism. Basically VisitScotland's chairman Mike Cantlay said that as Brave will be shown in 72 countries and dubbed into several languages it would give Scotland and the Highlands huge exposure, which will boost our tourism industry more than Braveheart ever did!

This article made me feel a wee bit warm, fuzzy and patriotic inside. I am Scottish, slightly ginger and proud to be so (and yes I have a soul). I am also a film and animation lover and have been in love with Disney and Pixar since I was a kid. That Pixar have chosen to create a film set in Scotland and cast mainly Scottish actors is fantastic and something I've hoped would happen for a while.

Quite a few film productions have rolled through Scotland recently and it was pretty exciting. Like lots of other guilty parties, I went out to take loads of photos of American cars that were lined up around George Square for World War Z. I even stood about 3ft from Hugo Weaving without realising around Blythswood Square for Cloud Atlas - was truly gutted the next day when I saw it in the paper. Not that I would have said anything as no doubt a quote from The Matrix or Transformers would've slipped out and I'd have made a complete arse of myself. It's not even like I was too busy trying to see Halle Berry who was also there. Oh no, I was too busy taking photos of the Highland Green GT 390 Mustang and black Dodge Charger from Bullitt to notice one of my favourite actors standing quite close to me!!

Just discovered I don't actually have any pics of the Dodge Charger, gutted again!

I've had 4 celebrity/movie star interactions in my life (signing tents and autographs after gigs don't count) and each time I've not been at my most observant - as previously illustrated by the Hugo Weaving incident.

I spoke to Jackie Bird without realising it was Jackie Bird until 5 mins after the brief conversation
I kind of insulted Gerard Butler's new accent within earshot of Gerard Butler.
I nearly bumped into Peter Capaldi, almost knocking the massive pile of books and paper he was carrying to the wet ground at Royal Exchange Square - we both said "sorry" and went on our way.
The daddy of them all... and technically #2 in my sightings of the main cast of Priscilla Queen of the Desert, (I'm counting Hugo Weaving) General Zod in The Sneck!
I sold Terence Stamp some DVD's in Inverness and for some reason I needed to ask him for ID. He handed over his New York driving licence and only then did I realise it was him. The black jumpsuit and flying towards the counter didn't give it away. Just joking, he's not really an evil General from Krypton!

Now all I need to do is to have an odd interaction with Guy Pearce, whilst not realising its Guy Pearce, to complete the Priscilla set!

Anyway, I love that big film productions are coming to Scotland and long may it continue. More and more content is being created here for all the creative industries and I hope we're on the brink of some sort of massive creative boom and we can show off what a massively creative country we are.

I really can't wait for the movie and am really looking forward to seeing the new style that Pixar have gone for. Also as an animation nerd, I'm really excited about Merida's hair. Disney worked wonders with Tangled so curls should be a cinch, but they just look fab!!

As a massive Pixar and Disney fan I'm usually first in line for the cinema queues, but I think this time I think I'll be first in line for the applications to Disneyland when they start recruiting Princess Merida's for their parks!!

Back to Work & Social Media Training

It was my first week back at work in RTRP and it was good to be back!
I've been catching up on all my emails and posts and of course all the lovely crafters of the Kirstie's Handmade Britain community. It has been amazing getting to know some of them through emails and posts and seeing all the talented people we have out there. It has made planning a featured crafter every day very difficult!

I've also been continuing with my Social Media education. I enrolled on Nikki Pilkington's 30 Day Twitter course - Its only been 2 days, but its already making a difference.Can't wait to see where it goes over the next month!
This will add to the fantastic 12 Days of Twitter course I did at the end of last year with Reach Further. The course was great. We got daily notes to work through, did the work when it suited us and had the weekend to catch up on any missed homework. I know I'll keep the notes for reference on my desktop as they were so informative and structured really well. If you need any help with your social media & Twittering I would highly recommend Reach Further. Liz, Bryony, Lucy and all the Reach Further guys were on hand throughout the course to guide us and they were so supportive too.

Happy New Year!

Here it comes... every year I make a vow to be more active on my blog and social networks and fail miserably. The truth is I've been falling behind because over the past 5 months I've been caught up in some kind of whirlwind that has kept me away from my blog and working on other things.

In my last post I said I had been accepted to take part in the Gen Up Programme, well that has been and gone now and I have to say I enjoyed every minute! I was forced out of my shell and made more aware of the fact that I am actually good at what I do, something us creative folk have a bit of trouble owning up to! I met some great people and networked with industry folk and most importantly ended up with a job.
In my work placement week I spent time at Raise the Roof Productions helping out with release forms and press releases which was really quite interesting. I learned a lot in the short week I was there and really enjoyed it. I also worked on their social media networks and outlined a plan for them to try when I left and they must have liked it as they asked me to come back the day after I finished Gen up!
So that's where I've been since the 7th of October. I was supposed to be there until November, but got extended until December and then on my last day I was told I had been extended until March. So really it was a Christmas and birthday present all in one.
I suppose that now that my job title is Social Media Coordinator I have no excuse to be lacking in my social media endeavours and this blog should be more active and hopefully more interesting as I share my thoughts, works and interesting stuff I've found. At least, that's the plan!

In other news I finally passed my driving test this week after 2 previous attempts and almost 10 years of learning (on and off) what a relief it was to finally pass. I was gutted I failed in December - I had 3 minors and pretty much a perfect drive, if it hadn't been for the cyclist approaching the zebra crossing...
I'm now waiting for my lovely pink licence to arrive although I would have preferred to get a new picture. I am apparently to be stuck with the monstrosity that is my 16 year old self at a time when I was known to my friends as Claire "I HATE my hair" Glasgow for the next ten years, not to mention a signature that looks nothing like how I sign my name now. In fact this licence could possibly get me investigated for some sort of fraud! Let the fun begin :D

Over Christmas I managed to get the rebranding of Daisy*B Design off the ground. Still putting the finishing touches to it all, but overall I think it suits me a lot better than the floral designs I had before. I got rid of the name Daisy*B Design as it turns out there is at least 3 other folk on the net using it and have decided to just stick with DaisyBisley as my working name. Still trying to figure out how to go about changing the Facebook page though. Any thoughts?

Exciting news and Nervous Days!

Haven't posted in a while due to many reasons. The main one being stressing out about an application for TRC Media's Gen Up Programme. I had to write 2 essays and spent ages on them due to the fact I hadn't written an essay in 3 years. I worte sooooo many drafts of each one and was so nervous when I handed the application in.
Anyhoo, I was called for an interview and sat in a corner rocking back and forth for the 4 days after it waiting for an answer. (Just a bit of an exaggeration!) In the end I got a place and couldn't be more excited about starting on the 5th September. It's going to be great fun and such a great opportunity, woot!! I've wishing for an opportuinty like this for ages now and it's finally happened, so happy! (cheesy I know, but it feels great!)

Will post a few wee bits and pieces about it if I have time over the 5 weeks the programme runs, I'll be taking up my driving lessons again at the weekend and doing some freelance while I go so it will be a busy month, but I'm not complaining :D

Another reason is due to creative block, well sort of. I've been suffering a bit from block for the past wee while, so I decided to buy a good book to help me over come it. I found The Creative Workshop by David Sherwin and from the reviews figures it was the best one. I gave the intro chapter a good read and about 2 weeks ago gave the 1st challenge a shot.
Well..... it worked! The first challenge is to brand yourself/your company and as I was looking to redesign the Daisy*B sites I thought it was the best way to start. The book limits your brainstorming to a certain time and it really does challenge you. I came up with a new logo and font style for Daisy*B and haven't been able to stop.

I've been redesigning the site for the past week and doing it all myself. I've learned how to use Serif WebPlus, furthered my knowledge of Illustrator and, most importantly, started desgning and drawing for myself again! It feels great and it couldn't have come at a better time, right before going on the training programme.

You might have noticed the new blog layout too, well this is based on the new site I'm desiging. I was going to roll out everything at once, but today I got too excited and had to get the blog done to go with this post. Properly Geeking out about it lol!

Feeling really positive about things today, which I hope will last. I also hope that this is the start of some good things for me, my business and for me & my other half... Fingers crossed

Nerd Fest

Dear readers, you may or may know that I am a self confessed Nerd and in honour of the San Diego Comic Con thats happening this week hundreds and thousands of miles away from me (*sigh, one day!!), I thought I'd have another Nerd fest full of tattoos, art and some handmade goodies.

Adventures in Jewellery Making

I had a breakthrough with some designs for my jewellery ideas while on the train to visit my Mum in Leicestershire. So I came back and got stuck in making them.

Unfortunately something went wrong with the first batch and then again with the 2nd batch, but I got 5 good ones lol! I keep telling myself that practice makes perfect and its all about experimentation they're not ready for sale yet and the ideas keep popping into my brain faster than I can sketch them, but I'm determined to perfect this and get them up on my Folksy or Misi site.

Behold the reject pile... I think it had something to do with the paper so I think I'll buy some heavier weight paper. (and maybe let the glue set lol)

This one was an accident after it had set slightly I dropped a pen and it got stuck. Once I lifted it up the resin came with it and kind of swirled over the top. It looks a mess, but I'm sure if I did it a little artistically it might work with a design.

The good ones came out ok. I still need to perfect them and possibly print the designs off at a higher resolution.

These are only 2 of the designs I've done, but I have a few more with different collections in mind too. I've also got some ideas with using shrink plastic as well, so fun times ahead.

As for my seminars and workshops. I've got this week. One tomorrow on becoming self employed and 2 on Thursday for business planning and marketing, I'm really looking forward to them. The first one I went to was a business awareness one, basically designed to make us aware of everything that could crop up while starting up. It was really interesting although quite scary lol.

Got loads going ont his week heading to the 3 workshops and then at the weekend myself and Peter are heading to the Merchant City for the 3 Years to GoSports Challenge for the Commonwealth Games, there's a possibility that Peter's work for the Tontine Building will be on display too which is exciting!! Then we're heading to the Britannia Bazaar in the The Britannia Panopticon Music Hall, a building I've never been in, but am looking forward to after seeing the website and hearing about it. So many things to see in Glasgow :D

New Adventures

This year is shaping up to be an exciting one, even though we're already half way through. I've finally decided that the only way for me to get a rewarding job that I will love for the rest of my days is to do it myself. I might not be a millionaire by the time I retire, but hey I'll have tried!
For the last wee while I've been thinking about where my tattoo designs could take me and I think if I keep designing them only for tattoos I'm not going to get very far, I have to branch out. So after much debate and full on mental fisticuffs with my inner pessimist, no full time employment and recent inspiration and encouragement from others I have decided what the hell, I'm going for it!

My only problem now is where to start...
I have enrolled on a few courses in the next few months to get me heading in the right direction. On Thursday I have a seminar run by Business Gateway to go to about starting your own business and next Tuesday I have a workshop about being self employed. I figured this was the best way to start.

As for the creative side, last week I finished a 2 week course in resin jewellery making and it was fab. I also have to say that I came away feeling so inspired and have now got some ideas floating around my head to turn my tattoo designs into jewllery pieces. I also met some great like minded folk and can't wait to get stuck in to some ceramic painting or sewing at The Life Craft when I get back from a trip to my Mums.
If anyone is interested the same Resin class it's being run on the 20th and 27th July, just visit the Facebook page for details. It's great fun and well worth it.

Bats isn't mine, it was made by tutor Addison St Louis of Freak Carousel, but I sanded it, drilled the hole and put the chain on :D

This very ungraceful Matryoshka would not keep her backside in the resin, so I ended up with a very promiscuous pendant, oops!

I've also booked into a cupcake decorating class on the 14th July in Make it Glasgow, but thats just for fun really. I'd love to decorate cakes for a living, but I really only love to bake for my family and friends and a certain man who happens to love my food lol :D (Note: Dear family & Friends, commissions accepted, but only Peter gets cake for free as he is the guinea pig)

In October I've signed up for a weekend course in screenprinting in the Glasgow Print Studio. I'm really excited to see where that could take my designs, I've wanted to try it for years and Tshirt/bag design is THE dream!
There'll be other Business Gateway courses to go to as well, so I can get as much information as possible.

I'm finallly feeling inspired and more energised in getting things going for myself and I plan to report back here about how I'm getting on, what I'm up to and other ramblings so that maybe they will help other folk in the same situation. I'll be 100% honest and say that I am terrified at the thought of going out into the big bad business world on my own, but I know whatever happens it'll be worth it because at least I've tried. Something I'm no longer scared to do...

Rita Vectors & Jewellery Class

So I finished my Rita Hayworth portrait, yay! It was fun to finally get stuck in to some serious vectoring in Illustrator as I've wanted to do the portrait for ages, not too sure about the hair though, but practice makes perfect I guess.

I also designed a tee for my brothers birthday, he hasnt seen it yet, but I dont think he'll be reading this so I think its ok lol!

He's a musician with a love of old sounds and cassette tapes and was born in 87, hence the "Rare Mix '87". Hope he likes it!
Got a busy day ahead, already I've been working on a top secret gift for my Grandma, soon I'll have to leave for work and later I have a resin jewellery class. I'm pretty excited as I've wanted to use resin for a while and my own experiments failed miserably so I thought a little tutoring wouldn't go amiss.

My class is in The Life Craft in Glasgow. They do a load of different classes so if anyone is interested check the website.

I will blog soon to see how I got on :D

Allergies & Old Movies...

What a lovely post London time I've had. After getting burnt while away and using a certain so called "natural sensitive skin" cream I ended up with a swollen face and looking like Rocky's sparring partner. I don't know why I bought the cream considering I've had a reaction before, but hey I was knackered!

So although I've had an itchy, burnt, swollen face and had to take a few days off work, I have caught up on some design stuff and today started a vector project that I've been wanting to do for ages.

Can you guess who it is? Hint: I finally decided to start it after watching a certain movie with the wonderful Glenn Ford and some gratuitous hair flicking.

So now I've been watching old movies all week while off and todays film is The Haunting.

ooooh its creepy, much better than the ridculous remake. And what is it that makes it so creepy?? Its that you dont see a thing, its all in your own head and if you have an over active imagination like myself, this is the best/worst type of film to watch! That and some classic camera angles and sound effects. Trying to think of some other old horror films to watch after it, so if anyone has any ideas of movies for me to check out please comment :D

Ice Cream, Hans Zimmer and Squirrels

Hello folks, just back from an odd trip to London to see the Royal Philharmonic's Film Music Gala. I say odd because myself and Peter spent most of the time in a trance of exhaustion from an uncomfortable bus journey overnight on the dreaded Megabus! The concert itself was amazing, the Royal Albert Hall was a beautiful building and the orchestra were incredible. However, London itself was a haze.

When we arrived at 7am we could do nothing but walk about to kill time. So we headed to a local Sainsbury's near our Easy Hotel and sat for a while probably looking quite strange and rough to the locals. We dumped our bags in the hotel that wouldn't let us check in til 3pm and then headed out for the 5 hour wait til check in and a decent sleep. We walked around Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park with Ice Cream at 10 in the morning which was lovely and relaxing UNITL... were accosted by squirrels.

The squirrels were quite intimidating and funny, they came right up to us and almost jumped up on Peter's shoulder ready to pounce on his 99 cone and run off with it! This did make us a bit freaked out and paranoid though as we were really tired and began to think the squirrels were stalking us, I'm pretty sure it was the same one that followed us all over Hyde Park.

We eventually relaxed at the Princess Diana Memorial Fountain as we lost the squirrel and fell asleep on the grass. Half an hour later I awoke to slight burning feeling on my face and realised I had not put any suncream on!!! Being Scottish and of the (slightly) ginger/fair-skinned persuasion, it is fair to say that the sun and I are not the best of friends. Of course I was lying with my head to one side and am now sunburnt down the left side of my face with a lovely white streak where my glsses were, thank God the Albert Hall was dark.

So we eventually were allowed into the hotel where we got a couple of hours sleep and then right back out again to the Albert Hall. It's such an amazing building and I really fell in love with it, especially the ceiling.

The orchestra were great, it all sunk in when they played te main theme to Gladiator as the brass section was AMAZING lol! Got a bit teary eyed when they played the Out of Africa theme too it was just incredible, we both loved it.

So now we're back home very tired, but having to dive straight back into work mode as we both have projects to be getting on with.

Cupcakes and Hobbits

From lovely sunny days to horrible rainy ones, I really hope that isn't our summer over and done with!
While it's been raining I've been working away on a few projects, mainly reading the Hobbit on my new gadget :D I bought myself a Kindle as a late birthday present to myself. I justified it by the amount of weight I would save when reading Lord of the Rings again, well thats my excuse and I'm sticking to it!
But first some amazing news, my lovely other half has only gone and got himself a new job in a computer games company, he's on a wee trial at the moment so lots and lots of luck to him, we're both so very excited although I think he's more nervous than I am lol!

I've also been planning my Mum's 50th birthday cake for the past wee while and on Thursday night (very late) I finished it as well as 24 cupcakes, well 23 as I ended up eating one to test how sticky it was with foil wrappers as I've never used them before, again thats my excuse and I'm sticking to it :P

All the cakes were vanilla with vanilla buttercream. The main cake had three layers of sponge, 2 purple and 1 plain. I used fondant icing to make the roses and I glued them to the cake with a wee bit water. I really enjoyed making it, more the decorating than the baking, but it was lots of fun.
It all went down well and everyone seemed to like it so happy days!

I've also been working on a few tattoos and some stuff of my own. I recently finished Dan's tattoo which was a triskele with an edge and a lot of fun to do. He wanted the triskele to have thorns and be a bit thicker than my usual ones.

I think it looks pretty cool and I can't wait to see it done, was really chuffed with it!
I also started Carrie's celtic turtle tattoo. This took me a while to figure out in Illustrator, probably because of the awkward way I did it, but I got there in the end.

As I said earlier I've been reading The Hobbit recently and have got a lot of inspiration from it. I've been wanting to work in Illustrator for a while now, creating something totally vector so I thought mixing both these ideas would be a start! The chapter in the book that involves Mirkwood was my greatest inspiration and I wanted to use that image for the vector piece.

I had fun doing it and really getting into Illustrator and all the things it can do. Planning other works too when I have the time to sit down and work on them.
And last but not least the most important news of the day *cough* Tangled has just arrived, thank you postie!

Got a lovely email today from a previous client, Aaron who got in touch at the start of the year asking me to design him a triskele. Aaron was only my second male client so I was pretty nervous about getting it right. I usually design for lady folk so I thought my designs might be too feminine.
As pretty much all of my designs are personal to the client I won't really be spilling the beans on all meanings and reasonings behind the tattoos. What I will talk about is the design aspects. Aaron wanted the design NOT to be feminine obviously, so this was my challenge. I've designed a male tattoo before with my Derek design, but this was different as it was a triskele, something I've only done for women!
Aaron also wanted each arm to have an organic tendril look and have the appearance of living plants, but with a celtic feel.

Here are a few of the original sketches:

These were a couple from the first rounds of designing. They were very celtic with knots all over the place, so much fun! I tried to keep the plant like appearance too, using thin vine-like lines for the arms.

These were the 2 versions Aaron choose to have a look at for the final design. He also wanted a green colour, which works really well!

This was the final design drawn up digitally.

It was pretty refeshing to design for Aaron, as with Derek I was totally out of my comfort zone and having to think differently "what would a man like?" I kept asking myself! Overall I'm really happy with the finished design and so was Aaron, so much so that he put it on his skin!

It looks amazing and the size really does it justice. I'm so happy with it and I can't wait to see it when it heals. Thanks Aaron!!!!!

I've been commission for 4 other designs too, a cluster of stars, a celtic turtle, a celtic version of Superman and a top secret design that will be a gift. There are also a few other design jobs possibly in the works so I'll keep you posted!

Sunny Days and Treats

I was working away on the newest tattoo design and thought it was about time I posted a little bit on my work process, just in case anyone is interested in how it all works.

It all starts with an email from a client who will let me know what they want and if they have any inspirational images etc to put me on the right track.
Then I do research, hunting the net for various images and ideas, I'll also take a lot of notes, some of which end up totally impossible to decipher! I'll then do a load of (very) rough sketches.

My box of supplies. When I'm working on a triskele or celtic inspired design I'll always have these books nearby for inspirtation.

From this point I'll start putting together a few finished designs to get ready to send to the client, usually I'll finish up between 5 & 8 designs for consideration.

These are the first few designs I did for Dan, he wanted a triskele with thorns and thicker lines than I usually work with. We're only on the first round so we'll see how it goes from there.

Thats pretty much how it goes - round and round til we get to a final design and I draw it all up in Illustrator, so I will post that side of the process when Dan and I have worked together to get the right design for him.

I really enjoy working this way, I get to know my client a bit and we get the design 100% right to suit them. It's great, especially when the weather's been as nice as it has this week. I love sitting in the sun and thinking about designing, as long as I haven't been hit by a block!

I will eventually draw all my sketches up digitally, I just need to get commissions out the way first. I did some last night and added them to the website and this morning I got up nice and early and did some more work to the site. I added another gallery where folk can now see my designs for sale. I figured I had so many of them sitting in my sketchbooks unloved and not getting any attention, I should really "digitally remaster" them and sell them.

I'v been listening to Swan Lake and Adele recently to fuel my designing and arty thoughts, its been a real help ! Got lots of plans and ideas to start printing and selling my designs on bags and other things. For some advice in this adventure into the unknown I emailed the lovely ladies at Made In The Shade in Glasgow. I got a lovely reply from Carrie encouraging and inspiring me to keep going with my work, I've stuck it to the front of my workbook so I'll always read it as soon as I open it =D Thanks Carrie! Spring has Sprung...

and its time for me to start getting my act together!

First lets get a few of tattoos out the way that I've found on the net and love. Apologies if I haven't mentioned who or where they came from, but just to clarify these images are not mine!
The theme for this little feature is Nerd tattoos/Fan Art. As a self confessed Nerd I felt the need to collect a few comic, movie and computer games images to show the devotion some folk have to their favourite passtimes! Here we go...

One thing I could never get my head round... special moves! I, I'm proud to say... am a button basher and as such was hated by my brother when it came to a game of Street Fighter, Mortal Combat or Tekken!

Moving on, some amazing comic fan art tattoos. Some of the colour used in these tattoos is incredible! Wonder Woman has to be my favourite...

And now for one of my favourites. I'm a massive fan of Lord of the Rings, both the movies and books. I also have an Evenstar tattoo myself, but this is just stunning!

Thats it for the tattoos folks. Now for a wee bit of blabbing :D From now on I will definitely be blogging here about all my work, not just tattoos. I've decided to this because I want to branch out with my tattoos and design work. I want to start screen printing my designs onto various products and to sell them and hopefully build a business out of it.
So from now on this blog will be where I post everything, my designs, my products and my experience and adventures into the world of starting my own business. Soon I hope to have a few things up online to sell and I've given myself until christmas/New Year to get some things together so I can make my way to a craft stall. I also hope to get more presence etc online and get working on it as much as I can to get myself out there and noticed. I just hope it works out!
