<div style="text-align: justify;">A jury awarded $30.2 million to a man paralyzed in a rear-ender under an overpass in Kirkland. In 2007, Koti Hu, then 27, was stopped at a traffic light when he was struck by Michael Savo. Hu claimed that the overpass cast a heavy shadow over his vehicle and the traffic light, which were located after a 180-degree downgrade turn. He claimed that defective traffic engineering by the state Department of Transportation contributed to the crash in its placement of the stop line and use of incorrect and misplaced warning signs. He also claimed that Savo was speeding. Hu was rendered a quadriplegic and required spinal facet surgery. Savo agreed that the ramp was defectively designed. The state claimed Savo was the sole cause of the crash.</div>

<p>&#0160;</p>
<div style="text-align: justify;">The family of a child who was riding on his bike when he was fatally struck by a drunken driver on an allegedly narrowed road recovered $8.4 million. In 2008, Jose Rincon Jr., 14, was riding in a bike lane when he was struck and killed by Glenda Rumsey. They claimed that the Tucson road was negligently maintained because it was abruptly narrowed into three lanes, causing the intoxicated Rumsey to swerve into the bike lane. Rumsey admitted negligence, but also blamed the design and maintenance of the road for contributing to the crash. The city argued that Rumsey was fully responsible by driving inside the bike lane for nearly 70 feet. The jury awarded $26.8 million, and found Rumsey 34 percent liable and the city 33 percent liable. It also found the restaurant that served Rumsey, which had settled prior to trial, 33 percent at fault. The judgment was entered against the city for $4,284,533 and against Rumsey for $4.08 million.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">A Long Island woman recovered $5 million for an injury she claimed to have sustained in a motor-vehicle accident caused by a driver who fell out of a vehicle. The matter dates to Dec. 10, 2005, when Elizabeth Caramico, then 25, was driving in Levittown. Another motorist fell out of her car while stopped at a red light, and that car rolled into traffic and caused a three-vehicle crash in which Caramico claimed that she sustained an aggravation of a Chiari I malformation of her brain and spine. Caramico had to undergo cranial and spinal surgery, and she claimed that she requires lifelong medical care. The defense contended that Caramico&#39;s condition had nothing to do with the accident, but it ultimately agreed to a settlement to avoid a trial. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">A jury awarded more than $10 million to a teenager who has been in a coma since she was hit by a car while crossing an intersection in Millbrae. In 2006, Emily Liou, then 17, was walking in a marked crosswalk in an uncontrolled intersection on El Camino Real when she was struck by Gada Hassany. Liou sustained massive brain damage and never regained consciousness. Hassany contended that she didn&#39;t see Lee, who was wearing dark clothing, until it was too late. A lawsuit was filed on Liou&#39;s behalf against Hassany and the state of California, alleging that it was dangerous to have a marked crosswalk in a busy uncontrolled intersection with multiple lanes of traffic because they give pedestrians a false sense of security. The jury found the state 50 percent liable, Hassany 30 percent liable and Liou 20 percent liable. </div>
