Brandi Evans Named DDC Artistic Director

Dallas Dance Company is proud to announce that dancer Brandi Evans has been named the Company's Artistic Director.

"I'm delighted that Brandi has agreed to take on the Artistic Director role," said DDC Executive Director Michelle Davis. "As one of the Company's founding members, she truly understands the mission and purpose of the Company. Her creative choreography has always been a tremendous asset, but having her in this leadership role will take DDC to the next level."

A member of DDC since 2004, Brandi earned an Associates degree from Kilgore College, where she was a member of the Rangerettes and served as Lieutenant, in addition to being a Swingster and Revels soloist. Following Kilgore, Brandi attended the University of Texas in Austin, graduating summa cum laude with a Bachelors degree in Dance. She was a member of the Dance Repertory Theatre, the university's modern company, and served as a student leader and choreographer for Students Exhibiting Experimental Dance (S.E.E.D). Her collegiate accomplishments granted her the opportunity to perform in the 2000 George W. Bush inaugural ceremonies in Washington, D.C., the Miss Texas Pageant, the Cotton Bowl Classic, ACDFA Southeastern Conference in Atlanta, as well as train with reputable artists such as Bill T. Jones and Michael Foley. Brandi remains an active choreographer throughout Texas and is an adjudicator for such special events as Carnival Cruise Lines and Contest of Champions in Florida.

Brandi is a senior staff member and instructor for Starmakers Dance & Performance Company. She is currently the director of the Berkner High School Bandolera drill team in Richardson.

"I'm so proud to have been a part of this group for so long," Brandi said. "It has been an amazing journey of talent, adaptation and passionate dancers! I am extremely excited to be a part of it's lasting future!"

Dancers selected for the Company will be learning and setting choreography for DDC's Visual Outburst performance on May 29, 2011. Selected dancers must be able to commit to dance rehearsals every Sunday until the end of May.

Choreographer Shelly Bramhall to Work With DDC

Shelly Bramhall, former Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader and current choreographer, will be setting a jazz/funk/hip-hop piece on the company!

Shelly is a beautiful woman inside and out, and has inspired many amazing dancers for years. She has a Bachelor's of Fine Arts Degree in Dance, has successfully choreographed for the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders and other great American Pro-Football dance teams for years, is a wonderful mom, teaches and choreographs dance full-time at Academy of Dance Arts, and is a qualified Cecchetti teacher through Professional Grade V.

In addition to an amazing dance background, Shelly also makes costumes for competition teams and studios in the DFW metroplex and just recently had several of her swimsuits featured on the cover of and inside the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders Swimsuit Catalog 2010.

Meet the Dancers: Leah Longoria

DDC Dancer Leah Longoria

Leah Longoria's passion for dance began in high school when she was a member of the McKinney North drill team, the Northstars. Not only did she fall in love with dance, but the experience made her realize she wanted to continue dancing indefinitely. Following high school, Leah attended Collin County Community College, where she was a member of the Collin Dance Ensemble, a modern/contemporary dance company. During college, Leah began teaching at Prodigy Dance and Performing Arts Studio in Plano, Texas. In 2010, Leah graduated from Texas Woman's University, earning of Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in dance and a teacher's certification. She began teaching dance and cheerleading at Sunset High School in Dallas, Texas earlier this year. Leah gave us a little insight about her experience with Dallas Dance Company.

How did you hear about DDC? I learned about DDC back in 2004 through my drill team, the McKinney NorthStars. I heard that many dance teachers were members of the Company, which gave me hope that performing after college (while holding a full time job) is possible.

Why did you want to be a part of DDC? I wanted to become a part of the Company to grow even more as a dancer. I had known about DDC for many years, but the timing wasn't ever right to audition. A former DDC member, Shara Barry, expressed that I should perform while I still can and take the chance before life gets in the way. Shara's comment really helped pushed me to take the step to audition.

What's your favorite part of being a member of DDC? I love coming to class and dancing fully and really pushing myself with a variety of choreographic styles. The environment is so supportive. It's a great place to be every Sunday!

Meet the Dancers: Ashley Wilkerson

DDC Dancer Ashley Wilkerson

Ashley Wilkerson began performing with Dallas Dance Company in 2004, the year of the Company's inception.

In addition to holding a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance Performance and Choreography from Columbia College in Columbia, South Carolina, Ashley was also a student apprentice and performing member of The Power Company, a professional dance company in South Carolina. Ashley has worked as an instructor for Starmakers Dance and Performance Camps and Talent 'n More dance studio in Richardson, Texas. Her performance experience includes the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, The Today Show, the Berkner High School Bandolera Drill Team and Talent 'n More Senior Stars. We recently sat down with Ashley to find out more about her involvement with Dallas Dance Company.

How did you hear about DDC? I heard about Dallas Dance Company from Heather Rios, who was the Drill Team Director at Berkner High School at the time and another dancer during DDC's charter year. Heather told me a little bit about the Company and its mission, and I was immediately interested.

Why did you want to be a part of DDC? I wanted to share my passion for both entertainment and art in dance performance and choreography. Dallas Dance Company allows me to do just that!

What's your favorite part of being a member of DDC? I love having the opportunity to perform and choreograph with a group of people who share the same interests in life! It's great to be surrounded by individuals that love dance so much that they also choose to stay involved with an organization that was created for the love of dance performance and entertainment.

Dallas Dance Company Launches New Blog

In an effort to build its online presence, Dallas Dance Company has launched a new blog to promote the company and its upcoming events and programs. DDC's blog, located at www.DallasDanceCompany.org, provides donors and fans with information about the company's mission, donor information and the Board of Directors.

"The launching of the Dallas Dance Company blog is a big step forward for the company," said Founder and Executive Director Michelle Davis.
