SAL'S BACHELOR PAD

We're delighted to finally bring you all another completed project! Introducing, Sal's bachelor pad by the beach. Luxurious, modern and neutral, finally an addition to our portfolio that say's Dalliance Design can do masculine too.

When I met Sal, I knew I could go a bit more wild as long as I stayed within the masculine, tone on tone boundaries of his personal style. The only way to achieve that look was to layer on the textures to keep the look interesting. Which meant buttery soft leather swivel chairs, silky velvets, croc embossed side tables and an innovative accent tile wall embossed to look like driftwood. After my final trip back to his house with accessories I realized I got quite carried away with the Croc (i.e. giant crocodile resin skull, croc tables, croc fireplace tile...). I can't quite figure out which part is my favorite, but I'd be excited if Sal wanted to work on the game room next. ;)

CHAIRISH: MISSONI HOME RUG THREE WAYS

While perusing the many pages of beautiful objects on Chairish.com, I immediately gravitated towards this Missoni Home's Octagonal Nabarniz rug. Dyed in rich pink, purple, and green hues, these are definitely pops of colors we can't resist at Dalliance Design. Shou-Sugi-Ban: BURNT CEDAR BOARD

While enjoying my morning coffee over the weekend I came across an episode of Bath Crashers. To my surprise, I happened to like the design in this particular episode. Unfortunately I can't find any photos depicting the end results of this episode. But that's neither here nor there. The important thing is I learned all about a new technique of charring wood planks. Which happens to be a century old Japanese fireproofing tradition called shou-sugi-ban or "burnt cedar board."

As you can see charring the wood for different lengths of time will result similarly to cooking a steak. Rare to medium to charred right off the coal grill. I love how the grain in the wood becomes more pronounced around the medium rare level.

Of course, I'm always interested in how pretty things are, but the purpose of charring the wood is actually interesting as well. Ready to get all scientific? The process known as oxidation, happens through scorching the wood, washing it down, and drying the wood to remove all it's moisture. This creates a protective barrier that doesn't allow oxygen in, hence the reason why it's hard to burn again being that air is an important variable to fueling a fire. Surprisingly you get a similar effect to how steel protects against fire.

On another level, this treatment protects against bugs and rot. Bonus!

Check out this look. Mixing the two different burnt levels of the charred wood together.

And let's not forget how this trend is creeping in to home décor. I'm completely obsessed with this Eskor lamp and bookends from Made Goods. Basically scorched wood encased in resin. How cool is that?

Not a clock person in the slightest, but I would definitely consider this one from Etsy.

OCTOBER DECOR MOOD BOARD

With the transition to the Fall season, we shift our attention back to our interiors. It's time to freshen up, break out a new cozy throw, perhaps try a new color paint and switch things up a bit.

I already broke out my 4x6 sheepskin rug and I won't lie, I roll around on it on a daily basis. It's just so cozy! I highly recommend one, even if it's just a single pelt at the foot of your bed. You can't have a bad day when you sink your toes in to that furry softness first thing in the morning.

On another note, I'm also looking forward to a few final touches I'll be making to my apartment before we photograph. The Katie Round Glass pendant from Visual Comfort will be a sleek addition to my dining table. And right on the wall behind my settee, a landscape painting I'm commissioning through my talented coworker, Sam. Inspired by the very talented artist, Robert Roth.

On the wish list this season are these stunning acrylic bowls by Alexa Von Furstenberg. There's just something about a hint of acrylic in the mix that just makes a setting unforgettable. And if I had the money and the time to install I would totally grab this Stikwood wallcovering from Anthropologie. A great look for an accent wall or a powder room.

For Color direction this season I'm really attracted to warm deep hues. Such as rich olive to emerald green, camel to Veuve golden orange and eggplant purple. I especially see these colors looking better worked in pairs and used in rich fabrics like mohair and velvet.

Living at the beach this summer has definitely changed my personal style up a bit. The ladies on the shore are more inclined to rock the boho beach girl vibe. This includes trends that I can't stand, a la high waisted denim shorts. And the dreaded hippie headband that drapes straight across the forehead.

On the other hand these girls are more carefree, and more inclined to just go au natural. In comes the bralette. I know, I know. It's not exactly the newest trend to hit the stores. But I just have to say, it's about damn time we show off what the good Lord gave us!

Out here on the east coast, ladies are showing off their bralettes. Letting them peek out through casual tees and tanks. Brands like For Love And Lemons and Aimee Cherie Intimates are definitely setting the tone for the everyday lingerie. Even Free People and Anthropologie have some cute intimates to choose from.

Let's take the trend to the Fall season by going a bit more with the 90's grunge revival that seems to be happening. Let your bralette peek out of your button down flannel. Or maybe with a vintage tee and a structure jacket. It's definitely a bit sexier than you may be used to but I think it's totally acceptable for a casual bar hopping kinda night out.

Take Ashley Glorioso of Purse 'N Boots Blog. I'm loving her style, and that she has a total obsession for the bralette. I have been stalking her Instagram for a week now and I'm completely inspired by her. I just love how effortlessly sexy her look is. Case in point, she's sporting the bralette right into Fall.

We're Back!

After a long hiatus away from blogging this summer, Steph and I are finally settled and ready to bring you new fresh content. Just to fill you all in, we've been busy. Steph finally found a more semi-permanent home in Midtown East, New York City. Like all NYC spaces, it's pretty tiny, but all of the square footage of the terrace was worth the deal. Enough space for a hot tub and outdoor sectional. Come next spring she'll be eager to show the place off.

In other news, I found the sweetest apartment in Asbury Park, NJ. I live right across the street from the beach and just close enough to all the downtown action. It has been a work in process for the past five months but it's almost camera ready. Can't wait to show you all how it turns out.

OUTDOOR TERRACE DESIGN

I am thrilled to announce that I signed a lease for a pretty amazing apartment in Manhattan. Technically, I was not going to begin apartment hunting for another few months, I just happened to accompany a friend to an apartment viewing and next thing I know I am handing a check over to the realtor. I am not one to impulse purchase (okay, maybe I am) but this place has a doorman, laundry on every floor, a rooftop, a gym, a suana, a recreation room, a dishwasher, a ROOFTOP, a pool on the rooftop.. oh, and did I mention a rooftop? Every single time the realtor mentioned another amenity I could not contain myself, I said "Stop it, I cannot handle all of this excitement, I already said I would sign the lease!"

Besides all of the great things I just listed, what sold us was the terrace that comes with our apartment. It is a corner unit and the terrace literally wraps around the entire space, our outdoor terrace alone is larger than most apartments I've seen. Having outdoor space in NYC is something I have always dreamed of but never saw it as a reality unless I won the lotto. The dream is real and I cannot wait to design the space. This is going to be one beautiful summer.

If you have the space, a corner sectional is the perfect outdoor seating arrangement.

Add texture by using greenery on the walls, and plenty of soft seating.

If your building allows it, build a canopy to protect you on the hottest summer days.

A table with a built in BBQ grill for all of your guests to cook their own meats and veggies? Yes please.

Incorporate lighting for better night time entertaining.

My roommate is convinced that we can crane a hot tub jacuzzi onto the terrace. I'm in.

A tree stump as a table base is absolute genius.

My friend ordered a projector as soon as I suggested having outdoor movie nights.

So apparently once your friends find out you have a terrace with a sick view, they all offer to help build furniture.

We ordered an outdoor double chaise lounge, I can not wait to lay on it after a long day of designing.

There will be plenty of dinner parties thrown this summer.

This indoor outdoor living design by Kelly Wearstler has always been a favorite of mine, the woman can do no wrong.

SUZANNE KASLER: CLASSIC INTERIORS

I recently had the pleasure of meeting the talented Atlanta based Interior Designer Suzanne Kasler, who happens to be one of my top favorite. I meet many high profile designers in my industry, and I always try to keep composed and professional. Suzanne is one of the nicest, most down to earth designers in person, yet I still managed to find myself at a loss for words. All I kept thinking was "Suzanne Kasler is staring at the large blemish on my face.." Suzanne Kasler has an impressive line of furniture for Hickory Chair, along with a classic collection of lighting for Visual Comfort. Her signature style of casual elegance has since been interpreted into a line of rugs with Safavieh, fine art with Soicher-Marin, accessories with Ballard Designs and a fabric line with Lee Jofa.

FABRIC ORGANIZATION

Steph and I always seem to chat about what our future office may look like someday, and we can't help but start pinning ideas even though we're not sure when that day will come. But right now my fabric collection is organized by color and style in plastic bags...not the way I envisioned exactly. But we have a few ideas up from our bag of design tricks.

1. bins: Love the idea of having a large island at counter height. For starters, it is a way to spread all your fabrics and tear sheets out to see together, and it also helps my tall body from hunching over when I'm creating boards etc.

2. Hanging: This has to be the best way to see everything all at once, but the downside is all my samples come in different shapes and sizes so it may not look the most organized. This unit is from Emerson et Cie and can be illuminated, or customized with different finishs.

3. Folded on shelves: So pretty and accessible, but kind of high maintenance if you ask me.

4. Filed and tucked away: This seems to be a great system for small offices, but again it seems a bit high maintenance.

ONE KINGS LANE ROOM IN A BOX

If you're lucky enough to be a friend of Steph and I you could be eligible for the friends and family designer discount.

My friend Vienna approached me with such enthusiasm for our work that I knew I had to help her with her first apartment. On our first meeting we found a few big key pieces that we really loved, but low and behold it was just too damn easy and it turned out most of the fabrics were discontinued. Which did not go over well with Vienna and her expectation on lead times. She was moving in not even a week later and wanted furniture asap. But her desire for good quality pieces mixed with her willingness to pay a pretty penny made her realize that some things are worth the wait.

So we went ahead and ordered this gorgeous Bernhardt piece and shaggy Moroccan rug from Gilt as a starting point.

After some time Vienna eventually approached me about scouting out some possibilities from One Kings Lane. So I put together a quick spread of what I thought would work with the rug and media console we had already purchased. A combination of items that proves you can get it all in one quick swoop...

BUT Vienna's a smart girl! And she quickly realized that this wasn't the way to go for her. A few reasons why...

1. She didn't know the quality of the sofa and chairs or where they came from

2. She couldn't see any swatches of fabrics or finishes

3. And she didn't want to make quick decisions because of OKL's auction based structure

On top of it all, if she didn't have me guiding her in the right direction, with my experience and knowledge of scale, pattern, balance, color etc. how would she or anyone for that matter feel confident on creating there own room in a box from OKL. A few random special pieces or fillers is okay, but I don't recommend someone purchasing an entire room of furniture off the internet unless consulting with their designer first.

All too many times upon first consultation we have witnessed homes that are decked out with a random selection of furniture. Pieces passed down or items that were purchased on websites like Gilt or OKL and thought to fit its designated home, never really came together in the grand scheme of things. And now here we are, Dalliance Design to the rescue. The dream team that will end up putting the puzzle back together, creating not only something you will love but will save money in the end. But I digress, back to Vienna's project...

Our next purchase was a sofa from Vanguard furniture, from the Michael Weiss collection, in a warm taupe herringbone texture. Minus the button tufting and the nail heads...because when you have a designer you can customize.

Next stop, picking a paint color! And figuring out our cocktail and side tables. I'm thinking a simple lucite cocktail could go nice with the Bernhardt console. Either way we will need to pick out some kick ass printed pillows and/or stools to bring the whole scheme together.

BOHEMIAN INSPIRATION

One important thing I've learned as an interior designer, when communicating with a new potential client, is to let them show you what their style is. We always encourage our clients to gather magazine clippings or create a Pinterest board of things they are attracted to with images of what they would want their home to look like.

I worked for a designer who worked on an entire concept for her client who simply described (verbally, with no images) that she desired a home that was simply, clean with a rustic feel. So, for days my boss collected fabrics and selected furniture based on her description, once presentation day came around the client had a disappointed look on her face, she finally whipped out her latest issue of Elle Decor to say THIS is what I was hoping for.. only to show us a spread of J. Lo's glamorous NYC apartment. One's persons "rustic" description may be someone else's description on blingy crystal chandelier. Save a lot of time and confusion by going through inspiration images together.

ORGANIC INDUSTRIAL

I was looking through the October 2013 issue of Lonny the other day when I came across this industrial oasis. It belongs to the design duo, Kristan Cunningham and Scott Jarrell, of Hammer and Spear in Los Angeles. I could only think to myself how refreshing it was to see such a well designed home that didn't look like you couldn't touch anything! The best of both worlds. Seriously though, a lot of times i see very contrived industrial design, but this felt really organic to me, more collected than overly modern. It has character and history, which gives it such a homey feel. Worn-in yet refined.

And then after crushing on this home I cross paths with Possum Belly

Pipe Bookshelves by Stella Blue Designs. Okay so maybe it's kind of typical of the industrial look, but I think the Edison bulb lighting factor

makes a fun addition.

I'm really digging this corner piece too.

And at around $200-$500 for some major character,

they don't hurt your wallet either.

PORTFOLIO: Upper West Side Apartment

Nicole and I had a photo shoot this weekend for our clients home in the Upper West Side. There is so much excitement that happens while setting up for our photo shoots, from picking up last minute accessories, to picking up fresh treats at the bakery, to waking up at 6AM to scour through the NYC Flower District and carrying 6ft long cherry blossom branches on the subway that you just HAD to have. We (and most importantly, our client) could not be happier with the end results, we hope you enjoy the photographs as much as we do.

MOROCCAN ARCH

I have always been drawn to the structural elements of Moroccan Architecture such as domed ceilings, high, curved archways and keyhole-shaped naves. Morocco was influenced by the use of basic semi circle arches in Roman and Byzantine architecture. Naturally Moroccans developed more intricate and intriguing arch shapes such as the ogee, horseshoe, and pointed arch with each shape symbolizing something different such as "keeping evil out."

PATTERN PLAY

If I had the luxury of purchasing a new sofa every couple of years, I would probably go all out and play with some pattern. But the idea of committing to a sofa thats a bit more "one direction" has me a tad reluctant. Chairs and even wallpaper are easy for me, but a patterned fabric on a sofa, not so much. As a designer I'm conflicted. On one side of the spectrum we should be taking more risks and setting the trends, but on the other hand most of us have design schizophrenia! How do you pick just one when you have a 100+ favorites?

This project is in pattern overload! Although it totally works and I personally love it, I'm not sure I could live with this look for more than 2 years.

How do you feel about patterned fabric on your sofa?

NEWEST INSTALLATION

With the exception of a few missing elements (i.e. the gas fireplace insert, the other shades, and a mirror we are still waiting on) this family room is almost complete! And the owners couldn't be more thrilled about the turn out.

BEFORE

Although big and spacious, this room needed some serious comfort and surface retouching. And if there was one thing the client wanted to retouch it was that horrid fireplace! And we agreed of course, but the other fix I just had to persist on making was the lighting problem. There wasn't any! All they had was a ceiling fan and a couple drab table lamps, in a room with 20 foot high ceilings!!! Sky lights and fans are great for natural light and energy saving purposes, but in the dead of winter the fire would be the only thing lighting up! My point being made, they went for the chandelier and not only does it add proper lighting, but it's super gorgeous!

DESIGN CONCEPT

Steph and I initially went for a more transitional look for the client, but as we built on certain pieces the client ended up moving in a more sleek and contemporary direction. We also decided that taking the fireplace stone all the way up to the ceiling was the right decision in the end.

As a 25 year old young woman, living in New York City can be a bit intimidating at times. I've seen a few things on the train and on the streets that make me think I should take some self defense or kick boxing classes.

AUTUMN INTERIORS

Not only do I get excited for fall fashion this time of year, but my personal interior design style is rooted in the autumn look as well. I guess it's that rustic modern aesthetic that really feels cozy to me. The warm wood tones, the sheepskin rugs, the foliage colors, rustic stone fireplaces, it's all my element. Yet to stay hip, I still need those metallic touches and sleek surfaces.

Great idea in this first photo. Buy one chair and make two cushions in different colors and fabrics for the changing seasons.

I recently saw this image below and I was floored. Anyone who rocks an emerald green lacquer wall with exposed brick is just a freakin GENIUS. Seriously, mind blown. Soooo obviously I needed to check out the person who made it happen, Ken Fulk. I've heard the name before, but I really needed to see what he was all about. And what I found was a gold mine of interior perfection. Sexy, cheeky, luxurious and fun, Ken knows how to put a room together....and apparently a party or two. The man knows how to live.
