Dan Art Doing Well at The Mission

Dan hung art at The Mission right after Rolando Street Fair ended this year. In case you've never been, The Mission boasts the very best rosemary potatoes you will ever eat. It is always packed and now Dan's art is hanging up for all to enjoy.
"Lava Larry" and "Sydney and Seymour" have already went to new homes.

Rolando Street Fair, Part 4

This year's local, home-grown street fair was blessed with no rain. Yeah! This is important to us artist-types whose wares suffer from unexpected moisture. As usual, Boba-meister, Pug-de-irrestible (or terrible depending on who you talk to), made a signing appearance. Strangely, no one asked for his autograph.

Both awesome Val(s) came with kids in tow. Thanks Val(s)! Cal and Jessica and Liz all came by to say Hi. (And they were hungry and we had food).

Bonus! We avoided the land of cactus once more thereby earning 20 bonus points.

Dan was very excited to have his robot troupe and spaceships hover at Marcella June's Coffee Shop this month. Proprietor, Dave, is a friendly host and master barista. Dave's coffee shop pays tribute in name to his lovely mom, Marcella, who will actually come out some time this year to christian his friendly abode.

Many locals walk in daily to this hidden jewel and get their caffeine fix or pastry indulgence. Dan is partial to the unique red tea lattes. No "fast food, hand over your money' vibe here. You will most likely have to remind Dave to settle your account as he will be busy chatting someone up on the comfy couch.

Dan's space art looks awesome amongst Dave's custom restored lighting fixtures. A homey glow is cast over all that enter... Hurry in!

The "Bots and Babes" exhibit opened last Saturday night and was a huge success. Everyone oohed and ahhed at Dan's vinyl creations that danced along the window panes, greeting everyone as they entered the exhibit.
Billy and Alex painted in opposite corners and the crowd was happily entertained.
Family and friends gave us a lot of support to which we are deeply grateful.
Aforementioned family and friends then dined on Italian around the corner from SDAD.
Come by and check it out. The closing reception is September 11th, during "Ray at Night", from 6-10 PM.

We bid adieu until next year. Thanks to all DBG's fans, new and old. Congratulations to all the giveaway winners this year! It was fun to have Pat and Amy come by and see what all the fuss is about every July.
Dan and I were on our own, both kids at work. We walked over to the Marriott before the Con opened and I shot photos of where he was photographed for the documentary. Optimus stopped us on our way back to the Con.
Breakdown was the longest ever with just the 2 of us. Hours.... did I mention it took hours?

Dan had a lot of fun today. He did an original commissioned "Rokbot" on a fan's messenger bag. Not only did he pull that off, he did it alone (running the booth and drawing, because I had gone upstairs to listen to author China Mieville's panel) on a Saturday, one of the busiest days of the con.
This was also the day a producer from Go Gamma Gamma, Nickelodeon Jr fame, came by, bought some art and gave Dan his business card and mentioned they have a segment on featured artists they may contact him about.
We had Marissa and her boyfriend Greg with us as well, rounding out our merry group. Pasta later and "watch out for that stop sign Aunt Wendy!"

Dan's second year getting to dress up as an infamous "red shirt". He had even more fun this year, if that's possible. There was a staged "scuffle" in the upper deck of the con with some rascaly Klingons. The fleet officers cleverly dispatched the ruffians because con officials asked the klingons to secure their weapons, whereas our group's phasers were untethered. Ha! Unfortunately Dan, being the token red shirt, was zapped in the fray.
To add to the fun, a film crew was at the con filming a documentary, "Comic Con Episode IV: A Fan's New Hope" by Morgan Spurlock ("Supersize Me" fame) on the con and it's inhabitants. Our group of fearless heros were escorted over to the Marriott to be part of the film. Watch for Dan on the big screen! The Starfleet group also captured their likenesses in 3D at a booth that specializes in 3D photos.
In addition we had our wonderful niece Marissa and my parents come visit us.

Wednesday is a long haul. You arrive early to set up your booth and the exhibit hall stays open until 9. Our fantastic helper of the day was Matt, Elizabeth's boyfriend, adopted Bois family member. He helped despite stitches and a knee immobilizer from a soccer mishap.

Cosmo's Coffee Cafe (8278 La Mesa Blvd, La Mesa, CA 91941) was kind enough to have me back this year for another 3-month exhibit. My "Tiki" collection will be up on their hallowed, aromatic walls from April-June.
I started the Tiki art last spring when we were redesigning our back room with a "tiki" vibe. We were inspired by Mainlander's, a tiki mega-warehouse (6195 University Ave., San Diego, Ca 92115) right in our own backyard. My tiki art started with some Tiki statues, then grew to include "Pearl", the dancer and "Sunbeam", the spy.
Then we visited Alaska in June and were awe-struck by the totem art. So you may see something inspired by that trip one day.

Rolando Street Fair 2010

No rain this year! Always a plus. Billy and I enjoyed the sunny weather and friendly crowds. We had a really good turnout this year. (We saw State's electronic billboard advertising it all week long).
Billy did live art while I sketched and chatted up my neighbors. Picked up some Easter goodies for the nieces and nephews and was entertained by the antics of the chihuahua rescue club. Also looked up our humble abode, when it was a brand-new "baby" house back in the 50's, at the map guy's booth. Back then it went for about $13,000, no lie.

I am very excited to have an exhibit of my pieces hanging on the hallowed walls of Flip. A Salon (3855 Granada Ave, between North Park Way & University Ave., San Diego,(619) 688-9760) Owner, Paul C., invited me to plaster the walls with DBG prints. Flip, a hair salon, has supported local artists since it's inception in 2008. I am proud to be a part of the process.
Long time buds, Sal and his sister, and an unruly city co-worker, Matt, stopped by for some wine and munchies, and to enjoy the artsy scene.
Thanks to Paul and his many cool stylists who made us feel ever so welcome. You guys rock. Not to mention how they get down on your hair.

Quarter Con Numero Uno

Well as many of you die-hard Comic con fans know, waiting for Comic Con to roll around every July is difficult at best. Paul Martinez, local entrepreneur, came up with the idea of a Quarterly Con to help us fanatics survive the long, hard year.
Quarter Con number one occurred in November at the Scottish Rite Temple in Mission Valley. Dan Bois Graphics had a table there, as well as my long-time art associate and bud, Billy Martinez.
I was happy to be part of this exciting project and was selected to design the promo flyers for this event. Attendees who brought their promo flyer were given a discount on getting in to this exciting event.
Plans for the future include inviting comic legend Stan Lee to attend. Stay tuned... same bat channel, same bat time.
Next Quarter Con is scheduled for Sunday, March 7, 2010.

La Mesa Oktoberfest 2009

Well, I raise my beer stein to one and all! Another La Mesa Oktoberfest has come and gone. Thanks to all the DBG fans who stopped by the booth to say Hi to Billy and I at our 3 day camp out on La Mesa Boulevard. We were directly across from Edible Arrangements and therefore consumed massive quantities of chocolate-dipped fruit on a stick over the course of the Oktoberfest. Delicious (and cheap) if you were around as they closed up shop each night!
Our 3 day tour was eventful to say the least. Opening night found our booth surrounded by the LMPD as they wrangled up some gang members who had stopped outside Edible Arrangements to pursue gang-like activities. We kept one eye on our wares and one eye on the shake down to see if we needed to dive under our tables.
Saturday night proved interesting as one of our neighboring booth mates became unruly and created some trouble for Billy. I think there might have been a full moon.
I don't remember what happened Sunday and I think there was some rain involved some where over the 3 days. But a good time was had by all eating way too expensive bratwurst, and gorging on corn of the kettle! Until next year, stalwart La Mesans!

"Take a bite out of Cancer!"

Dan's print "Sydney & Seamore", that debuted this year at the exhibit in Cosmo's in the first quarter of 2009, featuring a mermaid and great white shark; supported a good cause this weekend.
Dan was approached by the American Cancer Society to see if he would like to donate a piece of art to their "Relay for Life" that took place this weekend. He was happy to donate a framed version of this well-loved print. Monies raised at this event support cancer research.

Phaser's where set to FUN!

Comic Con has come and gone and it was a blast! As usual, DBG (Dan Bois Graphics) had a table at the end of aisle 900, G-5, and two panels up in the art show.Wednesday was set up day so Dan and family were busy setting up the table and the art show panels. Everything went smooth and we had a great preview night, catching up with old table buddies and new. A tired (you arrive at 7am to get a good spot in the parking structure and leave after 9:30PM when preview night ends) but excited family headed back to La Mesa that night.

Thursday was probably the best day of the Con for Dan. He finally realized a life-long dream and dressed up as a star fleet officer from the original Star Trek series. Close friends, Scott and Vickie Sebring always dress up each day of the Con and are well known for their '66 Batman, Starfleet, and various other costumes. Vickie was kind enough to make Dan his own custom "red shirt" (yes-he was the sacrificial lamb on this tour) and he gathered the other required paraphernalia-tricorder, communicator, phaser, etc., and, in a shocking show of commitment to the role, shaved his beard and mustache! I know many of you didn't recognize him sans glasses and furry face and he got a real kick out of that. After dressing up in full regalia, he walked over to the Marriot to meet the other members of the crew. Anyone who has ever had the pleasure of dressing up at the Con, knows it is a tiring commitment since you can only walk a few feet without someone stopping you for a photo op. The Marriot had several great photo ops (cave rocks, poolside) that the gang took advantage of and Dan participated in several shots where he "took a hit" and needed immediate medical attention! The capper of the day was a photo of the group descending an escalator that actually made it's way into a London newspaper!

Dan made a new friend, "Batty Ben". Ben Bentley, aka Batty Ben, as he is known on the 66 Bat Board, flew all the way from England to join up with Sebring's gang of merry men/women. He dressed as Batman while at the Con. And on Thursday, he was the official photographer of the Star Trek group.

While Officer Dan was being "phasered and repaired", Elizabeth (aka ClickChick) bravely manned (or womaned) the table solo until Calvin and I arrived from his orientation at SDSU. Sal, a close family friend, (here being monitored by Starfleet personnel) kept her company and helped her out in any way possible. Thanks Sal!

Friday was bring your boyfriend/girlfriend to work day at DBG's. Elizabeth and Matt and Calvin and Christa all had a great time at the Con. I think Friday was DBG's best day. Fans really enjoyed all of this year's new products. The 2009 Tiki art was a success (the Pit Cairn tiki was a quick sale in the art show upstairs), the new matted prints of our infamous "Rokbot", in a variety of colors were going like crazy and the new rocket print/bookmarks eventually sold out. Dan had two new mermaids he unveiled at the Con (Tia and Sydney & Seamore), that had previously been on display at his art exhibit earlier in the year at Cosmo's in La Mesa. This year DBG held a prize drawing on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Friday's winner of a Rokbot t-shirt was Lester Rossi (pictured below).

Saturday was a fun and exciting day and night. DBG's table sales were hectic. Iona Maas was the lucky winner of the Batmobile prize package that included an original DBG batmobile print, bookmark and button (she is also pictured below).

That night Dan was one of the featured artists at Mark Allen's store, FeeLiT (909 E St, SD), a few blocks from the Con. The whole family (and cousin Marissa) cruised up to Mark's after we shut down the table. We enjoyed a yummy burrito a few doors up from FeeLiT and then went back and watched several local artists, including pal Billy Martinez, do live art. We could barely keep our eyes open as we walked back down to the Con to retrieve our cars and head home so we could wake up and do it all over again. What a great end to a day at the Con. Thanks for your continued support, Mark! It is so nice to have a local venue where DBG fans can locate Dan's art after the Con.
Sunday, the final day of the Con, mucho sadness. The Comic Con is Dan's "Christmas", Elizabeth likes to say. He looks forward to it all year long, and it is truly sad when it all comes to an end. Not only does he look forward to selling his art, he enjoys meeting new fans and visiting with repeat fans/friends. He always manages to talk to someone about aviation history and they share a story with him about a family member flying in WWII. Dan just eats this stuff up. And these shared stories usually figure into the next airplane he decides to draw. And lastly, he loves going around and buying up all of his friend's art from The Drawing Board. Sunday's prize package winner was Donald Wygal who won the Rokbot package which included a matted Rokbot print and button.
Last, but not least, Dan supported our 3-Day team, 4 the Girlz, in our goal to raise $16,100 (the cost of all 7 of us walking) by letting me sell our beaded lanyards at his table. Thanks my dear-you are the best! We sold 16 lanyards, 5 bracelets and one pin. Thank you to all the DBG fans who supported our fight against breast cancer.

Mainlander's Annual Luau: Tiki town fun for all!

Crazy story.... so this year we decided to remodel our family room with a tiki theme. We found out that the coolest tiki store of all time was within 5 minutes of our little abode; Mainlander's: San Diego's Mega Tiki Store.
The cool store keeps, Michelle & Scott, helped us find exactly what we needed for our room, and as it turns out, they needed some work done by a graphic artist. I happily helped them out with some projects and they kindly invited me to sell my art at their annual Luau in May.
My daughter and I attended and we had a great time. Not only did we debut my new tiki prints, we were treated to a delicious luau with all the fixin's and musical entertainment, as well as live tiki-carving by "Tiki Dan". Dan Bois Graphics Debuts at The Candle Factory

In April this year, Cheri, owner of The Candle Factory in Liberty Station, Point Loma, invited me to sell my artwork in her candle store. She is hoping to attract a wider audience with the addition of local artwork.
My friend, Chris Paluso, is also a featured artist in at the Candle Factory, etc.
So while checking out the world's largest Trader Joe's on this planet down at Liberty Station, take time to pop in the candle factory and check out Cheri's goodies: Candles, jewelry, incense, art...

Rolando Street Fair in the Spring time...

This was our second year at the Rolando Street Fair. Billy and I shared a spot again which works out well for both of us. You really can't beat the street fair. It's in our own backyard, I could literally walk there if I didn't have 10 tons of artist stuff.
This year was cloudy and cold with just a few sprinkles. We saw many of our "regulars" that we
see at our other local, crafty event, the Oktoberfest.
This is a very fun, family event that features local bands, artisans, food vendors, rides and animal adoptions, of all things.

I can't believe what a busy, successful year this has been so far! Mark Alan, proprietor extraordinaire of FeeLit (909 E Street, SD) was kind enough to let me exhibit some of my artwork in his cool downtown store. I'm pictured standing in front of my mermaid, SciFi and WWII aviation art on display at Mark's.
You have to check out this store. It has something for everyone in the artistic, original frame of mind. Art, clothing, jewelry, music, you name it, Mark can find it. My good buddy, Sal, finds something to buy every single time we go down there.
