Human Resource Management (HRM) is the creation, the development, and the maintenance of an effective workforce. Matching the requirements of the organisation and responding to the environment.

Some important principles of leadership are forgotten in many large corporate companies where managers give orders. There is a monumental focus on the recruitment and selection process. Man management, once this process is complete, is fundamental to the morale and future productivity within the business. Various departments are driven by budgets. Managers must realize that the following personable approaches will gain universal respect, as well as performance indicator results.

Principles

Begin with praise and honest appreciation. If you are asking something of someone, begin by praising something which they've done for you in the past. Demonstrate your appreciation, this will ensure that the task you're asking them to complete will be carried with pride and diligence.
Call attention to people's mistakes indirectly. Speak honestly about their finest contributions before subtlety pointing out the benefits of correcting their mistake.
Talk about your own mistakes, you've made in the past and how you've corrected them before pointing out the mistakes made by others.
Ask questions before giving out direct orders. Instead of saying "Do this" or "Do that", say " What do you think about using this method?" Or, " Do you think this would work, and why"?
Let the other person save face. Even if we are right and the other person is definitely wrong, we can only destroy ego by causing someone to lose face. Hurting someone in their dignity is a crime.
Praise the slightest improvement and praise every improvement. Be hearty in your approbation and lavish in your praise.
Give the other person a reputation to live up to. If you want to improve a person in a certain respect, act as though that particular trait were already one of his or her outstanding characteristics.
Use encouragement. Make the fault seem easy to correct. When a student has an issue with algebra. Point out the fact that they are doing very well in all the other aspects of Maths and if they adopt the same principles in algebra, their results will improve. Notice the use of the word and rather than but.
Make the other person happy about doing the thing you suggest.

Peer production is emerging as an alternative model of production that can harness human skill, ingenuity, an intelligence more efficiently and effectively than traditional firms.The way companies address peer production will share the future of industry and affect their very chances for survival.

Companies will need a strategy to address peer production that takes into account both the threats and opportunities for their It's a myth to say that peer production takes away wealth from the economy and thereby erode the ability for business to make profits. Treating peer production as a myth or a transient fad is a mistake.It's not just online networking.Google CEO Eric Schmidt -peer production is about more than sitting down & having a nice conversation with nice objectives & a nice attitude Eric Schmidt -It's about harnessing a new mode of production to take innovation and wealth creation to new levels. The time to address peer production is now. Barriers to entry are vanishing and the trade-offs that individuals make when deciding to contribute to projects and organizations are changing, creating opportunities to dramatically reconfigure the way we produce and exchange information, knowledge, and culture.

Companies that recognize, address, and learn to tap peer production will benefit, while those that ignore and resist resist peer production cause companies to miss important opportunities for innovation and cost reduction, and may even go out of business. In it's purest form peer production a way of producing goods and services that relies entirely on self-organizing, egalitarian communities of individuals who come together voluntarily to produce a shared outcome. In reality, peer production mixes elements of hierarchy and self-organization and relies on meritocratic principles of organization The most skilled and experienced members of the community provide leadership and help integrate contributions from the community.

In many peer production communities, productive activities are voluntary and nonmonetary. They are voluntary in that people contribute to these communities because they want to and because they can.No one orders a worker to contribute to wikipedia or to contribute code to the Linux operating system.
The Linux/wiki contributions are nonmonetary because most participants don't get paid to participate, contribute. Individuals determine if, what, and how much they want to produce. Just because people don't get paid to participate in peering does not mean, however,that they do not benefit from their participation in other ways.

The economics of production have changed significantly as we have moved from an industrial to an information-based economy. In the industrial economy most opportunities to make things that were valuable and important to people were constrained by the high costs of making them. If you wanted to make a mass-circulation newspaper you needed a printing press and a physical distribution infrastructure, for delivering your papers door-to-door. Simply wanting to do this was not a sufficient condition to make it happen. You needed financing to obtain the physical capital. And, in order to get an acceptable return on your invested capital, you needed to orient production toward the market (i.e. you needed to sell subscriptions).

Today, billions of connected people around the planet can cooperate to make just about anything that requires human creativity, a computer, and an Internet connection. Unlike before, where costs of production were high, people can collaborate and share creations at very little costs. This means that individuals needn't rely on markets or capital intensive firms to make or trade all of the goods and services they desire. In fact, a growing proportion of the things we value (including newspapers can now be produces by us in cooperation with the people we interact with socially - simply because we want to.

So how can loose networks of peers possibly assemble goods and services that compete head-to-head with those of a large, deep-pocketed company?
For one, peering taps into voluntary motivations in a way that helps assign the right person to the right task more effectively than traditional firms. The reason is self-selection. When people voluntarily self-select for creative, knowledge-intensive tasks they are more likely than managers to choose tasks for which they are uniquely qualified. Who, after all, is more likely to know the full range of tasks you are best qualified to perform- you or the manager?

The originator of Linux, says "People just self select to do projects where they have expertise and interest." As long as communities have mechanisms for weeding out weak contributions.

Cost-Volume-Profit Analysis

FINDING THE BREAK-EVEN POINT

At the zero volume of activity (zero sales), there is zero sales revenue. The profit (loss), which is the difference between sales revenue and total cost, for some volume of activity is the vertical distance between the total sales revenue line and the total cost line at that particular line of activity. Where the volume of activity is at break-even point (BEP), there is no vertical distance between these two lines (total sales revenue equals total costs) and so there is no profit or loss. That is, the activity, whatever it might be breaks even. In the company I worked for this basic procedure wasn’t carried out, hundreds of business unit were not assessed and were suffering varying degrees of loss. My particular branch was the subject of -£14,000 loss per quarter The volume of activity was below BEP, the business was incurring a significant loss, total costs were exceeding the sales revenue. After I got to grips with the team, got them working together creating unity, following my attitude and application the business operated at a volume of activity above the BEP, there was a profit because total sales revenue exceeded total costs. There was a complete change in fortunes a £36,000 turnaround in net profit. So the store was making a £22,000 net profit. Remember, look at the figure, the further below BEP, the higher the higher the loss: the further above BEP, the higher the profit.

The sloping line at the zero represents the sales revenue at various volumes of activity. The point at which this finally catches up with the sloping total cost line, which starts at F, is the break-even point (BEP). Below this point a loss is made.

This can be a laborious business. However, since the relationships in the graph are linear that’s the lines are all straight, it’s easy to calculate the BEP.
We know that at BEP (but not at any other point):

Total sales revenue = Total costs

At all the other points except the BEP, either total sales revenue will exceed total cost or the other way round. Only at BEP are they equal.) That is,

Total sales revenue = Fixed costs + Total variable costs

If we call the number of units of output at BEP b, then
b x Sales revenue per unit = Fixed costs + (b x Variable costs per unit)
so:
b x (sales revenue per unit)- (b x variable costs per unit)=Fixed costs
and:

If you look at the break-even chart in the figure this is logical. The total cost line starts at point F, higher than the starting point for the total sales revenues line (zero) by amount F (the amount of the fixed costs). Because the sales revenue per unit is greater than the variable cost per unit, the sales revenue line will gradually catch up with the total cost line. The rate at which it will catch up is dependent on the relative steepness of the two lines and the amount it has to catch up (the fixed costs). bearing in mind that the slopes of the two lines are the variable cost per unit and the selling price per unit, the above equation looks perfectly logical. Though the BEP can be calculated quickly and simply, it does not mean that the graphical approach of the break-even chart is not without value. The chart shows the relationship between cost, volume and profit over a range of output and in a form that can easily be understood by non-financial managers. The break-even chart can therefore be a useful device for explaining this relationship.
Here is an example, Dappy Industries Ltd makes bar stools. The fixed costs of operating the warehouse for a month cost a total of £500. Each bar stool requires materials that cost £2. Each bar stool takes one hour to make, and the business pays the bar stool makers £10 an hour. The bar stool makers are all on contracts such that if they don’t work for any reason, they are not paid. The bar stools are sold to a wholesaler for £14 each.
What is the BEP for bar stool making for the business?

REAL WORLD

BE at BA, Ryanair and easyJet

Commercial airlines pay a lot of attention to their BEPs and their ‘load factors’, that is, their actual level of activity. British Airways is a traditional airline. Ryanair and easyJet both ‘no frills’ carriers, which means that passengers receive lower levels of service in return for lower fares. All three operate flights within the UK and from the UK to other European destinations. Only BA operates flights beyond Europe. We can see that all three airlines are making operating profits as each has a load factor greater than it BEP.

The usefulness of being able to deduce the BEP is that it makes it possible to compare the planned or expected volume of activity with the BEP and so make a judgement about risk. Planning to operate only just above the volume of activity necessary in order to break even may indicate that it is a risky venture, since only a small fall from the planned volume of activity could lead to a loss. This indicates to me that Ryanair make substantially more profit per unit.

What is an Entrepreneur?

The economy is calling out for entrepreneurs and SMEs. Some people are more naturally entrepreneurial than others. Furthermore they show these tendencies at different stages during their lives and in varying situations.

Relationships between the social environment and personality traits. An extension of the latter point is how much of this can be learned. The terms 'entrepreneur' & 'enterprise'

In the story of Intrason, we have met two words that have come to preoccupy so many politicians, managers and scholars. For governments throughout world, a problem has been to kindle the 'enterprise culture' which is both stimulating growth and generating new jobs.

Often the term 'rekindle' may be more relevant because of the common feeling that the spirit of enterprise has been lost. For the general manager, enterprise has become associated with innovation and dynamic adaptability. In large organisations, leaders have sought how to reproduce the same lost spirit to revitalise their sagging hierarchies.

For scholars, the words pose something of a puzzle. We seek answers to questions from

'Who are entrepreneurs,?'
'How are they created?'.
'What government policies encourage their activities and nurture their business?'

While there is a consensus that the entrepreneur is a key element in the economy, divergence between two main lines of thought continues. One concentrates on willingness to accept risks while the other stresses the innovatory function. Putting these together, we can summarize by saying saying that:

Entrepreneurs are agents of adjustment.This means that, in being flexible in their choice of business and the way they conduct it, they both lead and satisfy the adjustment needs of the whole economy.
Entrepreneurs apply innovative ideas, changing the way businesses convert inputs into outputs.
Entrepreneurs go beyond replicating the current processes in the market

They find new marketing processes to reach new customers or satisfy existing customers in new ways. They also take risks. In each of these aspects; the entrepreneur breaks new ground, usually seeking incremental rather than great change.
In this way the person is a calculative risk taker yet not an out-and-out gambler. Many entrepreneurs lack formal skills in risk management. The intermediary entrepreneur is alert to profitable opportunities for trade. The opportunity arises from information.

The intermediary spots opportunity not processed by others yet which is freely available. The intermediary's advantage is alertness, for otherwise no special skills required. Although accounting assists.

The originator goes beyond being alert to imagining opportunities.This is a special skill involved in not only finding openings amid uncertainty but in identifying their potential and assembling resources to exploit them.

The innovator relies on aptitude to develop new technology.This gives a temporary advantage over other firms. These firms can eventually respond by extending or replacing the innovation. There is some difference with intermediary, who sometimes exploit the innovations of others.The innovator differentiates from the originator, whose function may equally lie in marketing as in technology.

The risk taker gains profit as the reward for carrying risk. Assesses the uncertain future and ventures in business according to judgement.

The co-ordinator makes judgements and co-ordinates resources.Central to this view is access to resources. without which the entrepreneur could not function. This means capital. As the economy changes, the co-ordinator is first to adapt, matching changing supply and demand. In fact co-ordinators make the economy work. Underlining their risk taking nature.

Established Entrepreneurs don't necessarily cover themselves with insurance.
90% cover their property. Only 10% cover health, personal accident, travel or patents and copyright.

To sum up. What is an entrepreneur?

An entrepreneur is a person who shows willingness and ability to take reasonable risks for gain in business or commerce.

Enterprise is the behaviour shown by entrepreneurs, which is taking reasonable risks using personal resources.

Note that the definitions say nothing about the size or type of business activity. As we shall see, being an entrepreneur involves using a wide range of management skills in a variety of sizes of business.

Personal factors

Researchers have examined personal traits for clues to explain many aspects of behaviour, leadership, and entrepreneurship.

Need for achievement: Monetary gain is not the sole driving force behind entrepreneurs. They gain satisfaction from solving problems and taking responsibility for their outcomes.
Desire to be in control of environment and destiny: This is the preference for being one's own boss rather than being employed (and directed) by another.
Willingness to take risks: The consensus on this point has been documented/noted above
Need to be independent: This is the wish of not having to rely on, or be responsible to others.
Unconventional personality: This is the feeling of being out of place at a large firm.
Capability for innovation: Innovation can relate to any aspect of the business.

There have been studies that have tried to establish whether such traits distinguish entrepreneurs from the rest of the population. Are entrepreneurs really different to others? Clearly some factors are required of all successful managers, especially the important need for achievement and desire to be in control. For not only are managers directly responsible to other officials, and hence dependent roles, but also they thrive on being responsible for others, their welfare. They exercise freedom and take risks.
A further question concerns whether entrepreneurs are born or made. If such traits are needed by managers and entrepreneurs, then entrepreneur development should, and does, have much in common with management development. In other words, many aspects of entrepreneurial behaviour can be acquired through learning and experience.

Answers to these key questions could be useful, for example, in predicting whether an individual is likely to succeed. As with other aspects of human activity, it is inappropriate to pick out just one or a few factors when entrepreneurs are clearly characterized by their diversity. In addition, factors in the social and economic environments, which may have greater effect than personal differences. Of which, are sometimes the subject of ignorance by this approach.

Social Factors

Beyond personality, there is evidence that social factors influence the likelihood of a person becoming an owner-manager/entrepreneur.

Peaks in the age profile of the self-employed;
The best single predictor of self-employment is whether the family has included some form of the same;
Self-employment is more prevalent among married than among single people.
Self employment follows from social marginalization and is more common in some ethnic groups

While such factors may be noted as more typical of entrepreneurs than others they do not help much with the question of what makes an entrepreneur. For instance, from correlational data, one could argue that marriage may may encourage self-employment in some way. The danger is the same evidence supports the opposite argument - self-employed people are more likely to get married!

Age Profiles

The interaction of personal and social factors is illustrated by data on the age of the self-employed. One study found almost half business starters were aged between 30 and 45. Others identified two peaks in the age profile of self-employed people, namely 35-44 and over 65. A different approach compared the growth rate of small privately owned companies with the age of their directors. The companies, with a minimum turnover of £2million, were beyond the start-up phase. Companies with younger directors, around 30 years of age grow more quickly.

Although the measures and age groupings in such surveys do not correspond they all point to changes with age. "I can suggest that the peak among the thirty somethings" depends on their having gained sufficient experience to set-up in business while retaining the drive for achievement. The second peak among over 65s is explained by their minimal chances of formal employment. Small-scale self-employment supplements pensions.

Family businesses

Self -employment runs in families. This is not only because ownership is inherited but seems to follow from values and skills that parents give to their children. Inheritance might be a mixed blessing. There is evidence to support the adage, 'Rags to rags in three generations'. Only 8 per cent of family businesses reach the third generation. Decline in family businesses is not inevitable, however.

People's ability to learn is the key skill separating the potentially successful from the rest.

I remember on freshers week, the course manager said your degree will depend on your ability to make notes. You'll have material on the projector and in handouts, but it's the notes you take while being lectured, the quality and the quantity. I take neat notes without looking at the page whilst doing so. This ensures that I'm observing body language traits and emphasis from the lecturer, as well as, writing down virtually every single word they say. If I wasn't doing this, their speech will be gradually forgotten over a period of time. With the notes you can get close to a 100% of perfection when it comes to report writing or examinations.
Of course this is replicated in meetings and seminars in the business/real world. I actually learned this skill at store managers meetings. The notable one being the Jill Dando annual conference at the National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham. Due to the fact I took notes, I was able to recall her message that day.

There were meetings, courses, seminars frequently, increasing in quality after the merger. Although, the synergy David Simons was seeking from the amalgamation was not forthcoming. In fact, he lost £10million out of his own purse, admitting he made a grave error. An error well documented in business pages of fleets streets finest, for a significant period following that fateful decision.

One of the worlds largest pharmaceutical companies, the Swiss drug maker Novartis released all of its data live on the Internet, as they attempted to unlock the genetic basis of type 2 diabetes. This meant that anyone could access their raw data. This was simply unheard of in the high stakes, highly competitive world of big-time pharma.
By placing data in the public domain they were hoping to leverage talents. While this most certainly hasn’t impacted their finances in a detrimental way, there is very little evidence that this has had a profound affect on their income statement. The variables are consistent. The performance during the financial crisis of 2007 - 2010 is very encouraging indeed. Insiders are advocating this is due to becoming ‘open source’ in February 2007. Opening up at this stage has enabled the company an insight of a global research community. Not only that, human resources have been given a lift. The company’s Scientists have significantly heightened morale, eager and relishing the idea of establishing tighter relationships with colleagues in academia on a global scale.

It’s worth noting that Novartis didn’t reveal it’s own observations in the three years leading up to becoming open source. Three years of deep research, they went ‘open’ to add to their data and achieve a breakthrough.

Open sourcing, fostered close ties and goodwill with research communities globally. It’s provided them with a competitive advantage over their rivals, who’ve remained closed. Other companies now lack a competitive edge, lacking the relationships harboured by opening their raw data on the Internet, and collaborating on mass, in February 2007.
The Novartis initiative nicely encapsulates the principles of wikinomics.
Novartis is open. It no longer just considers the 98,000 people they employ full-time, but since Feb 2007 a broad array of individuals and partner organisations they’ve formed relationships with. In industry, government, the nonprofit sector, and academia that can enrich its value proposition. They peer produce value by collaborating closely with other institutions in society to achieve their business goals.
The Norvartis 'open source' success initiative. They don't keep secrets. They think and act globally. Novartis also considers its responsibilities as a global citizen; in addition to research on malaria, tuberculosis, and dengue fever they donate 2% to disadvantaged patients around the world. They embrace four principles-openness, peering, sharing, and acting globally-

Novartis is transforming itself into an increasingly collaborative enterprise model. The model "ENTERPRISE 2.0"-a new kind of business enterprise. Enterprise 2.0 is a new kind of business entity, one that opens it's doors to the world; co-innovates with everyone, especially customers. Enterprise 2.0 shares resources that were previously closely guarded; harnesses the power of mass collaboration. Enterprise 2.0 behaves not as a multi-national but as something new: a truly global firm.

This model can be scaled down to a smaller business. A micro/small business can open its doors to a co-creative, collaborative community. Where its growth plans receive contributions from other successful examples. I can cite many more examples and evidence to support my thesis that firms embrace the Enterprise 2.0 model can harness external resources and talent and achieve unparalleled growth and success as a result. Its hard for people to switch off, to bi-wire their brains and turn off the old business reflexes so that you can capitalize on what the new world of wikinomics can offer. To aid efforts to internalize the new business paradigm. I will give some examples of how smart firms are putting the principles of wikinomics into practice. A growing number of smart companies are learning that openness is a force for growth and competitiveness. As long as you're smart about how and when, you can blow open the windows and unlock the doors to build vast business ecosystems on top of what we call platforms for participation.

Amazon, eBay, Google, and flickr open up their applications and business infrastructures to increase the speed, scope, and success of innovation. Their platforms for participation create a global stage. hundreds of thousands of customers & partners added value & establish synergistic businesses. Amazon is an open platform prodigy, harnesses the power of at least two hundred thousand active developers. Amazon gains nearly 30% it's revenue from third party sellers that leverage its e-commerce engine.

Novartis are not alone in unearthing the colossal benefits of open source networking. Proctor and Gamble as mentioned in my previous blog How Mass Collaboration Changes Everything
Open sourcing key to Procter & Gamble turning their business around. Leader among thousands of companies that participate in the global ideagora. Their business model is something akin to to an eBay for innovation. Companies that move now can leverage a global pool of talent, ideas, and innovations that vastly exceeds what they could ever hope to marshal internally. P & G figures that for every top-notch scientist inside it labs, there are another two hundred outside who are just as good.

How can a company get with the program? The starting point for any manager is personal al use of the new collaborative technologies, preferably in conjunction with a Net-Generation youngster. Ask a novice to open a twitter, facebook account for the first time. Join myspace or produce a YouTube video clip. Get a taste for how these open communities work.

The next step is planning your innovation ecosystem (a network model), with a comprehensive map. Position your value creation and assess interdependencies will determine the flow of benefits and your ability to capture a share of them.

Note, this is not a traditional competitive landscape or value-chain analysis but an analysis of the participants creating knowledge pertinent to your existing and future business plans. While this includes business partners and competitors, it extends to academia, public research institutes, think tanks, creative communities or communities of practice and contract organizations. The map needs to be global and cover all relevant disciplines that intersect with your strategy.

It’s the worlds premium method of communicating. Without them people are enclosed. Of course there are people who share common interests, and want engage with each other. A unique business opportunity is given to allow you, to target your audience, and inform them where they can interact with you.

Viral media is based around the concept of something on a social media website becoming so popular and widespread that it appears on every inch of the web from personal blogs right down to e-mail and word of mouth!

News that hits Viral Buzz can shoot up in popularity to the point that entire websites can go offline due to the heavy flows of traffic trying to find out more information.

This effect of social media is often known as the slashdot effect after the technology blog that started this trend and has spread over into sites like Twitter (which uses the word "Twitterpated" to imply that something has gone viral).

While, I don't know if you're into the infectious 'buzz' of this viral networking, it has the potential to seriously self-promote your field.

Musicians, like My Chemical Romance first album I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love, had a small, but strong core following.

The album sold only 10,000 copies.

They dipped into the 'viral' world, pushing 'three cheers for sweet revenge', their second album, on My Space.com & PureVolume.com, two relatively new (at the time), music-heavy social networking sites with an exploding user base.

The album sold more than 1.5 million units. So, their first album sold only 0.66% of their second, the subject of a viral explosion.

Social Media: There's far more pros than cons for me. We're more connected; we have more choice.

Korean kids are growing up with so much ability. In many cases they are becoming entrepreneurs at 17 yrs of age. Due to widespread connection to broadband under the age of five.

Huge global political news stories are reported in great depth. Fine Detail through the power of social media. The world is changing and this is a major vehicle driving it.

The Global Plant Floor: The former multi-national model for companies is changing. Smart companies are deploying resources, breaking down national silos, to harness the capabilities of human capital across borders

There are no boundaries. Whereas before the web 2.0 and the enterprise 2.0 companies would have all sorts of barricades to break, when it came to communicating across borders.

Its not only co-creative online communities in the web 2.0. Its the actual peer production of physical things.Smart companies coming of age.

£1.3million cuts at job-centres. Efficiency could be so much better. I'm certain networking, social, viral explosions, whatever. They don't even use e-mail.

On the Gadget Show on channel five; there was an experiment where Jon Bentley used the new web to carry out the work of a GP. A patient gave him their symptoms and Jon was able to ascertain exactly what medical condition the person was suffering with. Not once, was he not, able to pin-point the complaint and recommend a solution.

This is where the walls of institution are crumbling. Scientists can now publish, manage data and collaborate across institutional boundaries. All the worlds Scientific data and research is becoming available to every single researcher without prejudice or burden.

Unrealistic you say? Not really, when you consider that conventional science publishing is both slow and expensive for users, and that these issues in turn are increasingly big problems in science. There's calls for the old paradigm to be cast away.

The problems with the 'old' issues.

Traditional journals aggregate academic papers by subject and deploy highly structured systems for evaluating and storing the accumulated knowledge of a Scientific community. Conventional Scientific publishing is both slow and expensive for users,these issues are increasingly big issues in Science. Visit any campus today and you'll hear even louder vocal cries for the old paradigm to be swept aside.

As new forms of peer collaboration and open- access publishing emerge, this looks more likely by the day. Frustrated authors find their cutting-edge discoveries less cutting edge after old paradigm lumbering review process delayed publication. Delays of up to a year on peer reviewed academic papers. With the pace of science increasing today, that's just simply not fast enough. Other problems encountered are paid subscriptions.

As Scientific endeavor swells in scale and speed,however,a growing number of participants in the scientific eco-system are questioning whether the antiquated journal system is adequate to satisfy their needs. Enough of the old paradigm. The new augmented, if not superseded- the increasing amounts of peer-to-peer collaboration.

SCIENCE GOES LARGE SCALE

Its not new you know peer-to-peer fashion is certainly nothing new in Science. Recent research suggests that collaboration is exploding. Collaboration has exploded. Papers have between two hundred and five hundred authors! A high ranked paper has got 1,681 authors.

Knowledge aggregators need to accommodate new realities. Online databanks and the rise of large-scale Internet-mediated collaborations. The worlds largest particle accelerator is producing petabytes of raw data each year-data that will be stored,preprocessed,stored, and analyzed by teams of tens of thousands of physicists around the world.

In the old days you were assigned to a corporate team, and that's where you stayed, building up bonds and trust and loyalty that would enable you and your teammates to collaborate effectively.

Today, new forms of mass collaboration suggest that companies may be better off with a more self-organised approach to teaming.

Wiki, Amazon, Linux, and others are mass collaborations of developers.

Large scale efforts building peer to peer networks. Some teams form temporarily around a particular project, in much the same way that film crews come together for a few months at a time to produce a movie, and then go on their separate ways to work on other productions.

This new approach to teaming is highly fluid and federated. Military forces are benefiting.

Increasing teams work from home.specific desks and costs of office leases. Prosumer communities can be incredible source of innovation if companies give customers tools they need to participate in value production.

Some will no doubt complain that such a radical approach to work-place organization is unmanageable. But if that were really the case then we wouldn't see communities like Wikipedia, the open source movement, or the Human Genome Project collaborating successful on a very large scale. With the right tools and enough transparency, a large and diverse group of self-selecting to add value can complete even the most complex tasks with only a minimum of central control

New alecksandrians are ushering in a new model of collaborative science that will lower the cost and accelerate the pace of technological progress in their industries.

Platforms for participation create a global stage where large communities of partners can create value and, in many cases, new businesses in a highly synergistic ecosystem.

Too much choice?

The overwhelming reality of our online age is that EVERYTHING can be available. Online retailers offer variety on a scale unimaginable even a decade ago. Millions of products in every possible variant and combination. But does anyone need this much choice? Can we handle it?

This is the question you see. It's being raised more and more these day as the online cornucopia expands. The conventional view is that more online choice is better, because it acknowledges that people are different and allows them to find what's right for them.

Barry Schwartz argued that too much choice is not just confusing, it's downright oppressive. He cited a now-famous study of consumer behaviour in a supermarket The details from the paper:

"Why Choice is Demotivating," Customers tasted a selection of Jam; One from a small selection six- Another from a selection of twenty four- Customers choosing from the selection of six - 30% actually bought the product and from the selection of twenty four - only 3% paid for it.

Customers get oppressed and confused sometimes with too much choice. As the number of choices keeps growing, negative aspects of having a multitude of options begin to appear. As the number of choices grows further, the negatives escalate until we become overloaded. At this point, choice no longer liberates, but debilitates. It might even be said to tyrannize.

Despite the detriments associated with choice overload, consumers want choice and they want a lot of it. The benefits that stem from choice,however, come not from the options themselves, but rather from the process of choosing. By allowing choosers to perceive themselves as volitional agents having successfully constructed their preferenceand ultimate selection outcomes during the choosing task, the importance of choice is reinstated.

The Importance of fish oils

One vital set of nutrients required for a healthy body are known collectively as fatty acids. These nutrients serve several functions. They make up the majority of the protective envelope, or the membrane, that surrounds every one of our cells. They are also used by the body as major building blocks for the creation of body fat, needed in appropriate amounts to cushion and protect our internal organs and to keep us warm.

However, not all fatty acids give the same benefits. Scientific research has linked the consumption of saturated fatty acids, found predominately in animal fat, with increased levels of cholesterol in the blood and a higher risk of heart attacks. The unsaturated fats found in vegetable oils have the opposite effect.

In particular, studies conducted over the past ten years have established that Inuits and Japanese fishermen have much few incidences of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and certain cancers than people living in Western countries. What makes this so surprising is that many Inuit people also enjoy a diet with the highest animal fat content found anywhere in the world. Further investigations led to the conclusion that certain nutrients found in fish oils play a unique role in reducing the cholesterol and triglyceride levels in blood, thus reducing the risk of a heart attack.

These nutrients are referred to as Omega -3 a group of polyunsaturated fatty acids. They are 'essential' because the body cannot manafacture them and must therefore receive them from dietary sources. Two of the most importnat fatty acids are called EPA (Eicosapentaeonic Acid) and DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid) and they not only lower the risk of developing heart disease, but also help keep arteries clear.

Other research over the past 30 years has also established that the other unsaturated fatty acids, known together as Omega-9, are a preferable dietary substitute for saturated animal fats because of their cholesterol lowering effect. These nutrients are typically found in vegetable products such as olive oil.

'The best way to obtain the beneficial Omega-3 fatty acids is to eat more seafood. Certainly all the reasons for eating polyunsaturated oils from vegetables remain, but we need to balance them with Omega-3 oils from fish.'

Costing in a Competitive Environment

Costing and pricing products in the traditional way began at the start of the industrial revolution. Modern businesses with machines and tech at their heart, have a high level of overheads relative to direct costs.This is due to massive depreciation, servicing, & power costs.Also personnel and staff welfare costs. Scarcely envisaged in the early days of the industrial revolution. We save money on more efficient production methods, this leads to less waste and, therefore, less total material cost. A highly competitive international market is key. Production, much of it highly sophisticated, is carried out worldwide. Transport,including air-freight,is relatively cheap. Telecommunications are cheaper, but its the Internet which ensures potential customers can quickly & cheaply find prices of range of suppliers.

In the UK, as in many developed countries,service industries dominate the economy,employing the great majority of the workforce & producing most of the value of productive output.There are many self-employed individuals supplying services,many service providers are vast businesses such as banks, insurance companies & cinema operators. For most of the large service providers, the activities very closely resemble modern manufacturing activity. They too are characterised by high capital intensity, overheads dominating direct costs and a competitive international market.

Management accountants provide economic information to their clients the managers. The quality of the service provided would be determined, by the extent to which the managers' information needs have been met. It can be argued that, to be useful, management accounting information should possess certain key qualities or characteristics. This can be applied to management accounting user groups. International complexities would have been more pronounced if IT systems hadn't advanced.

"Are you the weakest link in your company's supply chain"? Said the Harvard Business Review,in Sept 2007. "The warehouses of many large companies still operate with 20-year-old technology, producing incomplete & unintegrated information flows". Some companies have been disappointed by the failure of business-to-business exchanges to develop on the internet and provide them with supplies more efficiently than via traditional routes.

Active Inertia

Donald Sull an associate professor at London Business School. He is a fully established management guru. He's an author of some books which come highly recommended by the business bible, the Financial Times.

Educated almost exclusively at the Harvard Business School (first degree, doctorate, and MBA), Sull worked in consulting and private equity before moving to an academic career.

At the core of his idea is the observation that managers often get stuck in rut, so when an entirely new situation arises they revert to old responses.

This was common of the managers with poor profit and loss records in my stint in management. The most common complaint was "I haven't got time to be doing anything extra". A majority of the new material we were being presented with was vital for its efficiency savings. It was something which would replace something else on most occasions. The negative responses were always from those with poor records. If you get stuck in this neagtive frame of thought process, you are stuck in the rut Sull is referring to.

Sull says, is "management's tendency to respond to the most disruptive changes by accelerating activities that succeeded in the past".

He quotes the example, of tyre company Firestone's response to the introduction by Michelin of radical technology. Instead of embracing the new technology and all the changes that it implied, Firestone undertook more of the activities that had worked for it in the past, in the pre-radial era-extending its existing technology, making more tyres on existing equipment and keeping old factories working at full throttle. As Sull puts it, "It just dug itself an even deeper hole."

When managers are in a hole, they should stop digging. Instead, like a car stuck in the mud, they keep the engine turning as if they are on a normal road. They do this partly because they "equate inertia with inaction". But inaction does not have to mean that nothing is going on. When troops are not in battle they keep themselves in a state of active preparedness. Companies should do likewise.

Sull calls for "active waiting" a strategy he calls himself "anticipating and preparing for opportunities and threats that executives can neither fully predict nor control".

We all know the power of waiting quietly for the right moment to pounce upon an opportunity. Sull's idea is that waiting does not have to be quiet. While they are waiting there are lots of useful things that companies can do-build up a war chest, for instance, streamline operations, carry out scenario planning, and so on.

To avoid active inertia, Sull says leaders should not march "headlong toward a well-defined future". Instead, they should "articulate a fuzzy vision...a fuzzy vision works because it provides a general direction and sets aspirations without prematurely locking the company into a specific course of action".

I can see the presidents point of view: Why should the US suffer supplying oil to so many other parts of the world.I don't think there is a simple solution to this,I understand the presidents anger and he must have felt at some point...dismay? A rethink on the way we think about fossil fuels. This could turn out to be the most disastrous thing on the planet and we're only just coming out of a global banking & credit/recession crisis. Why should the gulf of Mexico suffer?Are there going to be calls for people to drastically cut their use of fossil fuels?Will there be a motor vehicle ban, like a hosepipe ban? I don't think everyone appreciates just how serious this may turn out to be.The president has put other urgent matters on hold, 40,000 barrels a day was leaking out! Taking shortcuts on this matter is so inappropriate.

In retail the kind of shortcuts I would take were cost effective solutions that weren't strictly legal but nobody was sick and I achieved the best stock results: If there was a best before (not a legal use buy date) I would still sell the product at a much reduced price to its original. For example, any produce, even beer that had a best before date, I would sell it a couple of days beyond that date at a significantly reduced price.Other managers would throw vast quantities of perfectly good food and drink down the drain and report stock results of more than 8%. Use buy different kettle of fish. Beer would be the best one, due to the size of the store-way too large for what the turnover was-this was a massive issue, items would, especially if some of my team weren't rotating the items, approach their use by and best before dates. I used superior tactics in dealing with this, by reducing items early and by very little at first.They would get snapped up and I would lose very little of my stock result. Other managers would be so poor in this, its a joke really that I've been out of the senior management game for so long. I'd visit, lets say Steve (Rides)-I'd say to Steve, "what is that huge bin full of beer for Stevie?" he would say "oh I forgot to reduce it in time, my assistant missed it." That simply wouldn't wash with me, I was on top of all these matters. He'd thrown away over £1,000 of perfectly good beer. This was terminal, common sense tells you that if he was to reduce a four pack of beer from £3.99 to £3.49 a couple of days before its Best Before date you're only going to lose 13% of its total value. He was throwing away 100% if you add up the cumulative impact of this behaviour you get one very good manager who is respected by all senior management and another who is being demoted to the smallest shop in the UK with so little commission per week, he might as well become my deputy, even though he was previously my superior in the first place, when I was a party going animal at 16yrs of age.

Especially when you've been in a senior position, no matter how long ago it was. If I hadn't been in a senior position, these books would just be words with no depth to them. None of my writing is plagiarism there are extracts which I use and word myself differently and graphs and diagrams which I use the outline of and enter my own words. If I was back at University now, I would be confident of getting a 1st. The most senior lecturer said is about your notes-how good your notes are when someone is doing a presentation. Well, I can write on the page neatly, without looking observing body language and speech. I can write this way so quickly I could be the model student. I hope to apply at Harvard Business School.

In the US studies found that females were subject to judgement by subordinates to be more effective leaders than males. Researchers came up with two possible explanations. This suggests to me that we should concentrate less on innate or learned traits ans more on what people actually do their behaviour. Groups perform differently: Autocratically led groups worked well so long as the leader was present. The Rule of a successful manager/entrepreneur MBWA = Management by Walking About-Mr Obama is most certainly doing that.If you wait or people to come to you,you'll only get small problems.You must go and find them.The big problems are where people don't realise they have one in the first place. This type of management involves the following

Managers consistently reserving time to walk through their departments and/or to be available for impromtu discussions. (MBWA frequently goes together with an open-door management policy.)
Individuals forming networks of acquaintances throughout their organisations.
Lots of opportunities for chatting over coffee or lunch, or in the corridors
Managers getting away from their desks and starting to talk to individual employees (this is a key morale boosting exercise- You'll have unity - your team will appreciate the consideration ) The idea is that they should learn about problems and concerns at first hand. At the same time they should teach employees new methods to manage particular problems. The communication goes both ways.

The difficulty with MBWA is that employees suspect its an excuse for managers to spy and interfere unnecessarily. This suspicion usually falls away if the walkabouts occur regularly,and if everyone can see their benefits.

MBWA has been found to be particularly helpful when an organisation is under exceptional stress for instance,after a significant corporate reorganisation has been announced or when a takeover is about to take place.

It is no good practising MBWA for the first time on such occasions,however.It has to have become a regular practice before the stress arises By the turn of the century it did not seen extraordinary that managers should manage by walking about.

Edicts were sent out to the blue-collar workforce whom they rarely met face to face. The outside world filtered through via a secretary who, traditionally, sat like a guard dog in front of their (usually closed) office door. Even in the 1980s such practices were not uncommon, as demonstrated in the film 9-5.

MBWA was popularised by becoming an important part of "The H-P Way", the open style of management pioneered by Billl Hewlett and Bill Packard, the two founders of the eponymous computer company. Many of the practices of the H-P way became widely copied by corporations throughout the United States in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

The idea received a further boost when Tom Peters and Robert Waterman
wrote that top managers in their "excellent" companies believed in management by walking about. In his second book, A passion for excellence, Peters said that he saw "managing by wandering about" as the basis of leadership and excellence. Peters called MBWA the "technology of the obvious". As leaders and managers wander about, he said that at least three things should be going on:

They should be listening to what people are saying
They should be using the opportunity to transmit the company's values face to face
They should be prepared and able to give people on-the-spot help

Maya Arulpragasam is a gift that the media will not let slip away.She thinks that Lady Gaga, Facebook, Google, were invented by the CIA. She bares a striking resemblance to Freema Agyeman , her of doctor who and Law & Order UK fame.

Her music - MIA is absolutely fantastic.A self- taught rapper,songwriter, and producer.Infectious,inventive tunes.A Sri Lankan born lass, she uses a tamils' urumee drum.Lyrics interesting, fluid, ambiguous, hard to decipher, mix of gangsta talk. Nas the rapper said after hearing her 1st album Arcula- only once."Right thats it, she's the future."

In Tooting she met Miranda Sawyer. I thought I'd mention my links to that part of South London. When I competed there I finished fourth best discus thrower and second 800m, third in 1500m and sixth in the 4x400m in the whole south of the UK, on the same day. I also met another general store manager at the Tooting branch of discounter Kwik Save. We were both on a fresh food course, in Stratford, and a Human Resources presentation together in Leytonstone. Also, a Liquor Licensing course at Battersea.

Greenberg is a highly intelligent, wholly uningratiating movie brings together two immensely gifted New Yorkers. Busy, and angry doing nothing says Observer film critic - Philip French. Ben Stiler excels as a depressive in Noah Baunbach's acutely revealing film about a man at war with the world.

Philip French when he reviewed 'Frantic'. Misplaced, out of context in my opinion.Yes, the film started engrossing, and remained so throughout in the Parisian underworld.

Only 0.1% of companies in the UK are large. Have over 500 employees. Most high street retailers are large, yet they only make up 1 in every 1000 - 0.1% of the total number of companies. However, they employ the largest number of people - 32.8%.

Relativist definitions of size of size does not suit governments or other agencies seeking to develop policies favouring small businesses. Even discussing a sector such as that comprising Small and Medium Enterprise (SMEs) is inappropriate.

Small businesses whose owners are not entrepreneurial, and who take little active part in the business, employing professional managers instead, are doing so at huge cost and are risking the very existence of the business.

Entrepreneurs tend to be found in the large number of micro and small firms. Exceptions are two fold. Some grow their firms into large ones while others find their way to the top of companies. The term for the latter is an intrapreneur. These are individuals displaying entrepreneurial attributes within a large institution or corporate company..

Distinguishing between those SMEs that are unlikely to change and those with growth potential has become important for governments. Job creation comes from growing firms. This has been evident since the second world war after the great depression.

Governments throughout the world have begun to recognise this point, although the problem of identifying potential remains. I can give some examples of policy, although its difficult to compare figures outside the UK because of the variable definitions. Direct comparisons are difficult to draw.

There was a study by (APEC) The Asia Pacific Economic Corporation. 18 countries. The group showed the importance of SMEs in memebr economies, especially in manufacturing. One third of manufacturing established economies, their establishments, with 50 % of that sectors employment, are held by SMEs.

Japan, the most sensitive country in the world, to any global economic crisis. In 1998 Japan's SMEs number 99.1% of the country's 6.5million businesses, and account for 77% of employment. SME account for 60% of the employment in Poland, 55% in Hungary & 50% in the Czech Republic. The number of SMEs in Bulgaria rose from 23,000 to 360,000 by the mid nineties.

What makes an entrepreneur?

Some people are naturally more entrepreneurial than others. Futhermore, they show the tendency more at different times of their life and indiffernet situations.

Explanations vary from those concentrating on personality traits to those that examine the relationship between a person and the social environment.. An extension of the latter point. How much of a person's entrepreneurial skill be learned and therefore taught?

For instance, it can be argued that one function of business training is to give people confidence to take on responsibilities, therefore removing a personal barrier.
