Note: I've been doing a lot of ongoing Tweeting about my time to and in London, so I highly recommend watching my stream at @ariedana if you want to know what I'm up to all the time. Or at least all the time six hours ahead of you. It's weird to think that the main part of my day is over before most of my friends and family have lunch. And the rest of this post is pretty much a straight reposting of something I wrote on Facebook awhile ago, but it's here so everyone can see it. ;)

Today I got off to an later start than I wanted (knocked out for about 12 hours) but I still made it to Piccadilly Circus, Oxford Circus, H&M (very dangerous store), and Boots megastore (ditto). Women of the world who love places like Bath & Body Works but can't afford to spend much time in Sephora - Boots is your Kryptonite. Oxford Street's H&M makes any of their American outlets look like crap. I'm now afraid to visit M&S.

Then did a great tour of Westminster Abbey, which will be closed the rest of the week and was extraordinarily moving. Nothing like visiting the tombs of about a dozen British monarchs and then the monuments and resting places Shakespeare, the Brontes, Samuel Johnson and Jane Austen. And it's relatively tiny! No wonder people were annoyed that William and Kate chose it for the wedding - I'm wondering if guests are going to be hanging from the rafters. But I literally sat in a chair right next to the main altar and got to imagine what it will look like from there on Friday. Also went to a prayer service at a shrine at King Edward the Confessor's tomb and lit some candles.

After, I walked around the Abbey (setups for media underway) and juiced up the iPod at a pub in Westminster before going to the Churchill War Museum, which is in his wartime bunker. Lots of pictures of that for Anglotopia (you can't take pictures in the Abbey, although I got a lot outside). Then I walked past the Houses of Parliament, visited yet another pub for iPod juicing and my first Pimms (yum!) and Whitehall to Trafalgar Square. That place has terrific energy. Finally walked back to the Carling Cross station, discovered the huge charms of M&S Simply Food's marvelous takeaway selection and then headed back "home" to Tooting.

It's hard to encapsulate everything about the London experience. I love the tube - yes, it's convoluted but you can literally go anywhere. I love the weather. I don't hear the accents at all - I already knew I didn't on the telly I was watching back in the US, but I don't even hear them here. People are very reserved but nice. And I'm not feeling the least bit overwhelmed by the city or the bigness of everything. Which is quite odd in a way. I kinda feel at home here, even moreso than I expected I would.

This one is particularly awesome because it has two Warblers songs in it. I have a thoroughly inappropriate crush on Darren Criss at the moment, because he's killing me with Blaine this season. Don't judge. Credit to @ProducerMatthew for Tweeting this.

Crossing something off the bucket list, with extras

For a very long time, I have wanted to visit England. Probably the whole thing started about age 7, when I would dig out some of Mama's non-iced-tea-sized Lipton bags, make a little toast and pretend I was having tea. But the whole hardcore yearning to visit is probably about eight years ago, when I started slowly getting sucked into watching more and more British television beyond the bits we get from BBC America. Actually, I'd love to live there but the Brits make that damn near impossible. I've talked about this before.
Sometime early in the summer, I finally had the hardcore realization that I've continually said that I was going to go next year, then the next year and the next year, but I never managed to do it because I hadn't made it a priority. So I finally applied for a passport and ended up having to basically write and document an autobiography after they required extra documentation. I also set up a special saving account that automatically pulled money out of each check and wouldn't let me touch it, which I discovered is really the way I have to do it if I plan to actually save money.
Long story short, I am going to London for a week. Not only that, but I am actually going to go the week of the Royal Wedding.
It's funny that's when I'm going. I was the most romantic little girl in the world in 1981 when Charles and Diana married. I woke up at 6 am to watch the broadcast and then cried when I found it was basically over by then. My neighbor had one of the engagement ring replicas, and when we went over to visit I would go in the bathroom, sneak the ring out and stand there for hours looking at myself wearing it in the mirror. I wonder now if that neighbor hung onto that ring, because it's probably worth a little bit now.
But whilst I think Prince William is probably the most worthwhile of the Royal Family at this point, with his real desire to serve the country and avoid getting sucked into an abnormal life, I'm now an adult woman whose jaded about marriages, and especially fancy marriages. So unless I have a reason to (I will be writing, blogging and doing video and photos from there for Anglotopia and maybe for a media outlet or two - contact me if you're interested!) I will not pull a David Cameron and camp out anywhere to stand and see Princess William/Catherine (the title's still up in the air) in her carriage going by. I did that sort of thing for two Inaugurals and I guess I'm getting old.
However, supposedly the whole point of when they scheduled the wedding and giving most of the country a long holiday is to have a long celebration with festivals and such. And that's the part I'm interested in. There's only a handful of touristy things I want to see, and beyond that I want to try to be at the point of view of a Londoner, which I expect will involve a lot of pubs. Beyond that, I'll have to see what the planners decide to do for public celebration that week.
I have been wanting to go to show tapings, because a lot of the panel shows seem to tape in the spring, but the overwhelming sentiment I've been getting from the natives is that they're getting the heck outta town that week, so I fear nothing will be taping. I know it'll be at the tail end of its expected run, but I would really appreciate it if the makers of the upcoming The 10 O'Clock Show on Channel 4 would save an ep to air the Thursday before the wedding. I really, really want to see that one.
It's hard to believe that I now have my tickets and have to wait four months to go. But hey, it's something to look forward to. And to everyone else, I hope it's proof that if you really really have something you want to do, just get it going and do it! It's funny how a little bit of good fortune and a few angels pop up to help you along.

I first met Elizabeth Edwards at the North Carolina State Democratic Convention when her husband was running for the nomination for the US Senate. At the time John was a longshot to even do that, much less go on and defeat the incumbent, and the thought of anything more was seemed like fantasy. But there was something very special about both of them, something that made you want to go to the ends of the earth to tell people about the things they wanted to do to help all Americans.
I'm not the only person who felt that way, and that's what made so many particularly angry about what John subsequently did that ended both our shared political dreams but also their marriage. Because where we all found that John was not who we thought he was as far as being an honest and moral person, Elizabeth was. She never suffered fools gladly, but she was also fair and kind. She never pretended that she didn't suffer and react to the horrible things that happened any differently than anyone else would have, but did it gracefully and as tactfully as is possible when the world is judging you.
I am so grateful that I saw Elizabeth again in Nashville in 2007 and was able to thank her for everything she had done to inspire me. And to me she will not be a victim of either a disease or a horrible scandal, or as someone who has lost a battle. I had worried so much that John's indiscretion would be what she would be remembered for, but I am now seeing that instead she has become such a huge inspiration. So she has won so much.

Once upon a time as a very cheesy teenager, I liked New Kids on the Block. I even had a tape of "Step By Step" given to me for my 15th birthday, I think. Didn't have that much love for the Backstreet Boys, as they came along a little later and I had formed a semblance of taste by then.
That said, for some reason the two groups have now merged as some sort of morphed supergroup called NKOTBSB. But I'm not sure that this is a case of "Two great tastes taste great together."

On the other hand, Robbie Williams has rejoined Take That after 15 years. I heard all of one Take That song before becoming a massive fan of Rob's around "Escapology" days, and I had very little interest in the old TT stuff since I still managed to retain the semblance of taste I try to maintain. However, when the other four members of TT got back together, I slowly but surely fell in love with their new stuff, which was nothing like a typical boyband but certainly appealed to my soppy side. But now, with Rob back, the band really do seem to have taken an entirely new direction and have made a new album that's blown my socks off.

Now if only they would actually release the new album, "Progress", officially in the US.

"I'm going to become the kind of woman who...you know, the kind of woman who just leaps out of bed and just does that *tosses head around* and their hair looks perfect. And they grab a homemade muffin out of their caffe kits and polka-dot biscuit tin and head to work wearing trainers at the bottom of a skirt suit to show off they've power-walked in. They have pot plants that don't die on them. Their fruit bowl isn't full of 3-week-old rotting pears because they actually eat the fruit! They have day bags, evening bags, and a clutch, y'know. They just grab a wheat-germ smoothie in-between work because that's enough to keep them going, even though at lunchtime they jogged and enjoyed it! Because they don't have flesh that moves independently to their main frame. And finally, they have easy access to pens, to finish a crossword at a bar where the man that they just decided to take as a lover the night before says to them, 'Hey, last night was great.' You know, be that kind of woman."
"Miranda", Episode 1 Series 2, aired on BBC Monday night.

After yesterday's self-hatred-fest, you'd think I would have trouble coming up with things for this subject. However, in an effort to at least maintain the persona that I am a reasonably sufficient human being, I have managed to find some good things about myself over the years. I am a fairly brave person, at least in a way where I have moved multiple places where I know absolutely no one, completely on my own, and have yet to be murdered. I'm a survivor of several bad things who has risen above, somehow. And I'm really great at random knowledge. Having trouble with or in remembering something? Twitter me and I'll probably have an answer. Especially if it's health-related.
But the one thing that I really do love about myself is my ability to write. Because that, in its way, is the reason I've become brave, managed to survive and thrive, and to have so much random knowledge.
I've always been very precocious in reading, which of course leads to writing. In kindergarten I was called to the principal's office to read books for the state officials who came to visit as an example of the fine teaching at the elementary school. Not that they had so much to do with it, because I was reading when I was 3. My mother swears I spent a trip to California my parents took me on at age 2 reading all of the road signs along the way. That must have been a long trip.
The whole reading thing, plus my little fantasy existence (I was constantly play-acting at being a princess or Laura Ingalls) kept me entertained during my childhood and then an adolescence where I had absolutely zero social skills. I was an only child until I was 8, raised on a farm and never went to preschool. This meant all of my interaction growing was with adults, and finally meeting kids was quite a shock. Especially since, as I already said, I was doing things that most of them couldn't do at school and I suspect I was a bit obnoxious about it.
So since there weren't many kids talking to me (and those that were would safely be covered under one of those anti-bullying PSA's that are popular now) I started spilling stuff onto paper. The first time that really became valuable outside of achievement tests and good grades was in the 3rd grade, when one of the local clubs had a poetry contest for all of the schoolkids in the county. At the time my mother (who was a high school teacher) was having a lot of stress from changing curriculum for her classes thanks to then-Gov. Lamar Alexander's "innovative" philosophy for teaching that involved doubling their work load outside of school hours. So writing what I knew, I wrote a poem about how hard my mama worked and how tough it was.
That was also my first experience with the fact that if you're a writer who's honest, people aren't going to be happy about it. My mother's first reaction that I remember was of embarrassment about the subject matter. Bless her, it's never gotten any better, I fear. But I ended up winning the county competition and read the poem aloud at one of the club's meeting, where people cheered and told me how smart I was. It ended up that my poem was posted on a plaque on my parents' living room wall for years.
Aside from one high school English class and a short period of very bad romantic poetry, that was the end of my life as a poet, but I kept writing for school. Possibly my longest work was a 40-page book report on "Pride and Prejudice." Yes, seriously. You should've seen the reaction from my English teacher. Needless to say I had no problem coming up with material for my AP English exam.
Then I went off to college the first time and wrote and wrote about politics and history. I kind of wish I still had some of my history papers, especially the ones from History of England (yes, obsessed even then) but that was before you had more than a floppy drive you lost a week later. I had one class with my mentor Dr. Richard Chesteen, who at the time was running for the office of governor of Tennessee, where our final exam was to hypothetically write a speech for him. He told me afterward that he would've been proud to have used my speech in his campaign. Once again, right there with the poem, it was one of the great validating experiences of my life.
Several years down the road (for those who don't know my life story, I did a bit of a college national tour in between "life"), the writing helped me get into journalism school at the University of North Carolina, which led me to attracting enough notice between the writing and being able to randomly build websites all the way back around 1998 where a teaching assistant recommended me for my first online journalism job at The News & Observer in Raleigh, NC. Which then led, eventually, to writing in TV and building websites and now to where I manage content for a station that's part of a national television group.
But how has writing really saved me? It's not only that it's helped me build a career from the ashes of "life" (when I got into UNC, it was more than just getting into one of the best schools in the country - me and my ex-husband literally had been living in our car months before and were still trying to find a place to live.) It was the way that the strange, weird, silent child finally found a voice.
I built my first personal website around 1996, but I got my first blog on LiveJournal in 2001, shortly after my divorce and a nightmarish first attempt at an adult and independent life through a move to LA. Having married at 20 to one of the most extroverted people in the world I hadn't had the need to say very much, because he said it for me, which I'll be the first to say was not the way to go. But at 27 I was on my own, with a lot of experiences, no way to express them that I knew of and an even stronger fear of social interaction.
So I just started writing. And kept writing. And people reached out through the writing and ended up forming actual relationships with me. And I learned a few basic social lessons, like that it's okay to have a different opinion than others and that I can defend myself if I need to, and that people do want to hear what I think and about what I do. Finally, that I do have a personality and am (hopefully) funny and clever, at least on occasion.
Now, thanks to the magic of Facebook, I have gotten back into tertiary contact with people I went to school with back in Tennessee in my early years. The one thing I've heard from several is that they were kind of surprised to hear that I was interested in certain things and that I do the work that I do and have experienced what I have. This is because I was so shy and quiet that I spent most of my high school and college years actively trying to render myself invisible. But I don't do that anymore.
If you keep up with me on Twitter or Facebook or here now you probably think I'm this very extroverted person, because I largely have no fear. I tend to avoid politics, but otherwise I'll respond to or talk to pretty much everyone equally. And aside from the self-flagellation prompting me to delete things more than I should because I don't want to sound like a blowhard or a suckup, I don't have too much fear. Because I have a voice and it's as good as anyone else's.

The thing that I really hate about myself? That I could sit here for 30 minutes, easily, and list and list things that I see wrong with me and still be coming up with new ones for days afterwards. I am, easily, the most self-critical, guilty for everything person you'll ever meet. In fact, the thing that almost all of my friends at one time or another have asked me is to please, PLEASE stop apologizing for everything that happens.
There are two things that are really harmful to me about being so self-critical, beyond the inherent lack of self-love that I'm told is needed for anyone else to love you back. Ironic, because it's hard to love yourself when you feel that no one likes you. One is that people pick up on that trait and take advantage of it. And since they tell me crappy stuff that isn't really all my fault, I take on even more guilt and it adds to the stack on the "Dana Sucks" pile. Since all bad feelings go to my bodily organs, is it a shock that I've had migraines since the age of 15 and am now minus a gallbladder?
The second is that I find the stupidest things that add to the feeling of something being wrong with me. Just last night there was a really great new BBC documentary series called "Freaks Like Me" that's about all the individual quirks that people have, like separating all the foods in their meals or never wearing the same pair of underwear twice. The point of the programme is to celebrate your own quirks and embrace them, not really to mock them.

But the last person on the show was a kid who is obsessed with America. He listed all 50 states and said that his goal in life is to live here. And that turned into wow, I've got this thing for British stuff and want to live in England, so what does that make me? The thought of being a point-and-laugh object of amusement sucks so much that I'm even now wanting to just go hide and never talk about British stuff again.
What can I do about it? I've worked on not being so reactive and also recognizing that sometimes the best you can do is all you can do. And we're all unique and I'm not a worse person for weighing too much, being shy and having a really unusual interest. And I have largely given up the apology obsession and have become a bit less of a doormat. But other than that, I'm not sure. Maybe the best thing I can do is use it to my advantage in writing some really self-loathing dark comedy.

It's true that I haven't blogged anywhere or about anything beyond British TV in months, except for the occasional reposting of graphics. Plus people are telling me that they actually miss my personal stuff - all the stuff that I did back in the LJ days that was then considered oversharing.
So I'm going to steal this meme that my friend GingerSnaps is participating in, which will hopefully give me something to talk about for 30 days at least. And if something bothers you, I guess I should take the stance that at least you'll know not to bother reading me anymore.
Day 01 → Something you hate about yourself.
Day 02 → Something you love about yourself.
Day 03 → Something you have to forgive yourself for.
Day 04 → Something you have to forgive someone for.
Day 05 → Something you hope to do in your life.
Day 06 → Something you hope you never have to do.
Day 07 → Someone who has made your life worth living for.
Day 08 → Someone who made your life hell, or treated you like crap.
Day 09 → Someone you didn’t want to let go, but just drifted.
Day 10 → Someone you need to let go, or wish you didn’t know.
Day 11 → Something people seem to compliment you the most on.
Day 12 → Something you never get compliments on.
Day 13 → A band or artist that has gotten you through some tough days. (write a letter.)
Day 14 → A hero that has let you down. (letter)
Day 15 → Something or someone you couldn’t live without, because you’ve tried living without it.
Day 16 → Someone or something you definitely could live without.
Day 17 → A book you’ve read that changed your views on something.
Day 18 → Your views on gay marriage.
Day 19 → What do you think of religion? Or what do you think of politics?
Day 20 → Your views on drugs and alcohol.
Day 21 → (scenario) Your best friend is in a car accident and you two got into a fight an hour before. What do you do?
Day 22 → Something you wish you hadn’t done in your life.
Day 23 → Something you wish you had done in your life.
Day 24 → Make a playlist to someone, and explain why you chose all the songs. (Just post the titles and artists and letter)
Day 25 → The reason you believe you’re still alive today.
Day 26 → Have you ever thought about giving up on life? If so, when and why?
Day 27 → What’s the best thing going for you right now?
Day 28 → What if you were pregnant or got someone pregnant, what would you do?
Day 29 → Something you hope to change about yourself. And why.
Day 30 → A letter to yourself, tell yourself EVERYTHING you love about yourself
Day 1 will start tonight or tomorrow.

I try to stay apolitical these days. But this is a very clever idea, and would've only been better if Gov.
Glee-ful+3: 3 Fox premieres I watched, and 1 I should've

As I said on Facebook earlier this week, this is when Fox rents my soul for awhile. Still love my Brit TV just as much, but I guess it was providence that two of my faves ended their latest series last week and others during the last month, so I can divert attention elsewhere. And this was a particularly big season beginning for all three of my current favorite American shows - House, Glee and Bones - all of whom had game-changing season finales in the spring (or in Glee's case, merely starting a new school year is a big beginning.)

The best of the lot, a bit surprisingly, was Bones. I was surprised because, frankly, the end of the last season really pissed me off. I use this line a lot - Booth and Brennan are what Mulder and Scully would've been if they had better writers. And the writers here are very well aware that B&B have been written in such a way that now, at season 5, they should be tackling the we're-working-and-shagging melodrama so they can have babies who hopefully aren't kidnapped and given up for adoption after a sudden pregnancy where the seduction and conception took place off-screen. Ooops, yeah, I'm still bitter about how the X-Files turned out.

Anyway, when Brennan blew Booth off (no double entendre there, I swear) in a fairly cruel way toward the end of the season, and then the entire team split up, we all knew they would be back now, and there were no big storyline surprises. But the episode just shone because each of the characters played their part and reacted to each other so brilliantly. Booth and Brennan managed to discuss Booth's new girlfriend (whom I'm actually happy about - there is no way I wanted Booth doing the painfully silent heartbroken hunk thing all season, and it's time that Brennan gets properly jealous of someone for a change) in their patented odd banter of Brennan's cold logic vs. Booth's attempts to make her human. And everyone else - trying not to spoil (the girlfriend's been in spoiler talk for months, so deal) but they seem to have been at least reasonably happy without each other, but oh so much the better together. And the ending scene tells the story of what the overarching theme of the season probably will be in such a blunt manner, but neither Booth or Brennan acknowledged it. Which was perfect.

Glee was good. That's a lot better than it could've been. It wasn't great because it didn't approach the levels of emotion and musical fun of the series premiere and then both the mid-season and season enders. The song choices are definitely not up to what I loved about the show. If they could somehow ban anything that's been in the Top 40 in the last six months from being used in a show, I would enjoy it so much more.

But storyline-wise, they were set up for some good things to happen. I'm so glad that they have established that Rachel and Finn are going to be together through the season. I'm not sure if I could deal with her wishy-washiness on boys anymore. I like the new football coach and how that will affect Sue - at least it ended the slams on Will's hair for at least one night. Brokenhearted Artie watching Tina literally dancing away with Mike was so sad. From hearing the previews of next week's songs, he's going to get a good chance to tackle that. And speaking of tackling, I wasn't sure that they would ever find a guy hotter than Puck on that show, but Sam might give him a run for his money.

Said music preview for next week's Britney Spears ep, which I am greatly looking forward to, if only because apparently Heather Morris can actually sing. And there's Paramore! I'd imagine that's a big of a middle finger at Kings of Leon, who are delighting in telling the UK press that they didn't sell out to Glee. Just Gossip Girl and commercials.

House, well, he and Cuddy finally hooked up. In a shamefully lustful and wonderful way. Thank you so much, House writers. Bones writers, take notes. They then proceeded to spend the rest of the ep being mushy and angsty and that was all nice, but it'll have to end next week or it won't be House. I do hope there are some really good guest stars coming on, because the highlight of the fellows was how good Jesse Spencer's new haircut looks on him. And I'll be the only fan to say that I will really miss Cameron.

Finally, I was so wiped out after an hour of nekkid Huddy that I turned off the TV and didn't watch the show premiere of Lone Star. I am now ashamed of myself, because it appears the rest of America turned to Dancing With The Stars and that this show is really good and will now probably be canceled. This led the head writer to pen the best "please watch my show" fan letter ever. So I will watch next week, and I hope everyone else will too. Good scripted drama beats a Bristol Palin cha-cha any day of the week or year.

Baby, don't you lose my number...because I won't remember yours

AFTER a day by the surf in Daytona Beach, Fla., last year, Travis Erickson, 21, discovered that his cellphone had been either stolen or lost in the sand. He also discovered that he was stranded.

Though there were plenty of pay phones and beachgoers willing to lend their cellphones, he couldn’t call his girlfriend of over a year — with whom he lived and who was on her way to pick him up. He didn’t know her phone number.

“I didn’t even think about trying to know it, because we lived together,” says Mr. Erickson, a model.

Like many of the 91 percent of Americans who are cellphone users, according to CTIA-The Wireless Association, an industry trade group, he programs all his numbers into the phone, and dials by calling up names — not numbers — on the screen. “I never had to know it,” Mr. Erickson said, “because it was always in my pocket on my phone.”

via nytimes.com

Since they didn't end this anecdote until the very end of the article, I'll tl;dr it for you - the only way he had to get in touch with her was via a long-ago-remembered ex's number, because she knew his girlfriend. Current girlfriend wasn't happy that he didn't have her digits memorized, and they broke up weeks later.

But I feel for the guy. I sit here and think about it and the only phone numbers I know by heart are my parents' and grandparents' ancient landlines. I couldn't tell you my only sibling's number if my life depended on it. Same for all of my friends.

And it's not that I don't care about them or that I don't keep up with them (well, I do have a bit of phone-phobia, so it's more email-based anyway) but it's just that the numbers have been transferred from phone to phone since I still had a Nokia, many phones ago.

I wonder if the next generation will completely drop the notion of phone numbers entirely as people use email and text messaging via handsets more and more. I know I certainly know people's Twitter names and Gmail addresses by heart much more easily.

It does kind of concern me, though, the thought of traveling somewhere and possibly in a worst case scenario being robbed of all of my electronics (eek!) and stuck in a hospital or jail with absolutely no idea of how to contact anyone who knows who in the heck I am. I have a great way of looking for the absolute darkest side of a situation.
