Preparing mentally and physically for a National Competition

Preparing mentally and physically for a National Competition can be very trying at times. As national competitions get under way around the country, literally thousands of dancers from the United States and Canada prepare for the big event. Mentally, you must “know” that you have prepared all year for this and you are ready. Your self-talk can either make or break you. Always be positive!!! Physically you do not want to change the way you are taking care of yourself. You should continue to eat and hydrate your self properly. The most difficult challenge is to remember to do these two while the nerves gather. You may want to take part in other activities outside of the competition but you need to be sure the event does not take away the mental focus or the allow you to become to exhausted to perform. Most of all, go out on stage with confidence and have fun!!! Good luck to all of you who are competing in the next two weeks.

Savian Glover visits Manhattan

Savion Glover is a dancer who really shows passion for what he does. His show A Solo in Time was performed at the Joyce Theater in New York City. Along with two other dancers Glover performed with background music and at other times performed with a singer. I really enjoyed when the three dancers performed together without music. All the sounds were very clear and it was amazing because even though their feet were barely moving there were so many sounds coming out of their feet. I also found it amazing when each would do a solo while the other two did something together and then they would all come together at some point. It is always makes me happy when dancers are together and with these dancers I never worried because whatever they did their bodies moved in the same way as if they were one person. Savion Glover is a very unique dancer because you can tell he doesn’t put a performance together to make it perfect and it seems like he does what he wants no matter if the audience likes it or not. He dances for himself and when he is on stage with other people you can tell they all love what they do and that they all love performing with each other. At times they would talk to one another on stage but not so it distracted the audience. His show was very relaxing but very energetic at the same time. It was relaxing to watch such an amazing and well put together show and it was exciting because it kept me on the edge of my seat. I also thought it was nice when after the show the cast came out to sign autographs and take pictures. Each one of the cast members was down to earth and just like anybody else. Summer Camps 2009

It is not too early to look into Summer Dance Camps and training. My daughters have attended some wonderful Summer Dance Camps including, New York City Dance Alliance, Julliard Summer Intensive, and The Gold School Summer Intensive (Massachusetts). Each one of these camps provides technique work, core training introduction, nutrition information, and some pure fun. The camps differ in pricing so you must find one that suits your needs and your wallets. The January issue of Dance Spirit magazine has a list of over 200 Summer Camps for 2009. If you have attended a camp let us know how it was and by logging on and commenting. It’s never too early to start searching for the right summer dance program!!!!
