A central trait of African dance is that it is polycentric. This means that - unlike many other regions of the world - the body is not treated as a "stiff" unit but is segmented into several centers of movement (shoulders, chest, pelvis, arms, legs etc.).

These centers of movement may be moved according to different rhythmical components of the music or even add rhythmical components of their own.

This may result in very complex movements "inside" the body, as opposed to the movement through space of the whole body that plays the most important role in many European choreographies.

Australian Chris Measday - inspired to take up pole dancing after breaking his back warming up for a gymnastics session - won in the men's division, commenting that probably the hardest thing about the discipline is finding a balance between flexibility strength, and grace.Highest scoring competitor in both the fitness and art sections, in each of four divisions - men - women -disabled - doubles was named winner of the Ultimate Pole Champion title, though getting maximum points involved well-executed routines that paid careful attention to the synchronicity of music and dance moves, along with emphasis on stage presence, energy and enthusiasm.Competitors, seemingly effortlessly, bent their bodies around poles and spun their way up them, arms and legs moving with balletic grace.
One armed Australian Deborah Roach claimed the Ultimate Pole title in the disabled division, always loving to dance taking up Pole dancing in 2006, inspired by a circus-themed double act she saw at a club in which she danced. Deborah also took up aerial acrobatics, in 2009 winning a pole dance contest competition against able-bodied opponents, spurring her on to abandon her IT job, learn to ride a bike at age 28, become a personal trainer, and get her first prosthetic. Unlearning old athletic habits comes hard to some, but being a good pole gymnast calls for a whole new set of rules.

Indian Classical Dance forms are really great to not just to watch sitting in auditorium and applause but to observe and understand very influence of nonverbal communication in our life. Most people might attribute these dance forms to antiquity and culture - tradition of certain geographical area or civilization but these dance forms portray broad spectrum of emotions and feelings an individual from any part of this earth has at unconscious level.

Karanas (Transitional movements or postural alternations), Hastas (Hand Gestures),Adavus (Series of steps or expressions), and Bhedas (Eye contact, different gazes, Neck - Head movements) are basic elements of all Indian Classical Dance forms described in Natya Shashtra - an ancient Indian treatise on the performing arts (Theatre, Dance, and Music).

Dancers often enact as mythological story tellers or actual characters of story on stage but they can convey message of different subjects from real life. They can portray virtually any tangible or intangible entity and concept. They utilize facial (micro) expressions, postures, gestures, emblems, proxemics, and movements to enact them very lively and dramatically. Many western performing artists have invented hybrid dance forms inspired from Indian Classical Dance forms.

Dr. Paul Ekman found universality of facial expressions subjected to seven basic emotions in 20th century. But Indian classical dancer have been portraying Nav-Rasas (Nine distinct psychological states or emotions) since more than thousand years. The nine different emotions included in Nav-Rasas are Shringara (Love, Affection or Amour), Hasya (Laughter), Karuna (Kind-heartedness or Compassion),Raudra (Anger), Veera (Courage), Bhayanaka (Terror), Bheebhatsya (Disgust),Adbutha (Surprise), and Shantha (Peace or tranquility).

This outfit was adopted by dancers in Egypt in the 1930s, and its style stems from vaudeville, burlesque and Hollywood rather than the actual Middle Eastern dress. This outfit was largely adopted due to the fact that the most popular venue for belly dancers was and still remains in night clubs.It is largely an improvisational dance form that focuses on moving the muscles around the hip and pelvic area. The idea of the dance seems to be to isolate this one area while keeping the rest of the body as still as possible. Many of the dance moves that belly dancer incorporates require a lot more flexibility than one would realize at first glance. Americans fascination with belly dancing began around the 1950s and has since spread throughout the United States. Shen Yun is a classical Chinese dance troupe, home-based and formed in New York in 2006. The troupe has performed internationally since that time. Shen Yun translates to the divine soul and spirit of the dancer.

The troupe will perform at the Capital Theatre, Sydney, 27 April-6 May 2012. No one adjective can sum up the magnificence of their performance. Even total beauty in motion is an inadequate description. It is all- encompassing: visual, audio, emotional and all with a twist-a very definite political message.

The names of the dances reflect the beauty and vibrance of the costumes. Two stand out items were “Lotus Leaves” and “Sleeves of Silk.”

To say the dancing was superb is an understatement. Dancers were strong and dynamic as they bounded acrobatically across the stage, while at other times they seemed to effortlessly glide as if on a floating cloud.

The use of the backdrop merging into the actual stage was clever and captivating. The entire backdrop scenery became the entrance and exit to and from the celestial realm. Extremely effective and unexpected. Yes, as the name suggests, divine.

Each dance number was introduced in both English and Chinese with a brief synopsis. Interestingly enough, many routines dealt with the age old theme of good triumphing over evil. In fact, this was the underlying message conveyed by the entire performance.

The dances were interspersed with three vocal numbers, two of which dealt openly with the moral decline of the world and the importance of spreading the truth. However, the vocal numbers, even though musically brilliant, seem somewhat diminished by the lyrics on the backdrop, in both Chinese and English, which were somewhat reminiscent of Karaoke.

At the end of the performance, which came all too soon, the narrator thanked the audience and named future international venues. In fact, one can see Shen Yun just about anywhere in the world, except in China where it is banned, no doubt because of its subtle political criticism of the communist regime’s propaganda and persecution of its citizens.
