...and more importantly, the whimsical heart to enjoy it. i returned from post-holiday-rush burnout to a fresh outlook, and it's all too easy to settle back into the rut of worry and putting-what-should-be-first-last.

we plan to hit the farmer's market this weekend and breathe deep the fresh air, taste the hot kettle corn and cold gourmet popsicles, and soak up a free morning.

i intend to giggle and play, and not worry about what anyone thinks, and use my camera-tool for capturing what matters most.. my people.

Perhaps my blog may faint from shock after so long a time of under-use. I intend to write - I do. I write in my head. Then someone needs a bottom wiped and someone needs a paper proofread and someone needs a newborn session and ... another silent day passes.

But today, I write. Because I have cooked for two solid weeks (or at least I have planned and shopped and occasionally photographed) and I must share.

We sat at the table one night and my second announced, "I provided this meal for my family." Chest puffed proud and ornery-humor-sparkle in his eye, he pronounced right. On the hunting trip with Papa, he and brother and dad hunted five deer. I may once have been the mom who said, "My child will never..." but watching the honor my father in law shows the kill and the firearm, and pride with which our sons offer the meat that will nourish our family forces me to give thanks... for my boys becoming men. For the honorable death to provide life (am I morbid? or philosophical?). And frankly, for the delicious Venison Stroganoff that graced our table.

It was hearty, and filling, and perfectly warming on a Florida "winter" evening; perfect to follow a heated basketball game.

hhmmm... it's true, imitation is such a temptation, and is so easy to do almost subconsciously! for instance, as an artist inspired by others who freely share, it's easy to find the works of those i admire showing up as shadows in the work i create. i ~~want~~ desperately long to be different, to go above (and i mean this in the God-sense) what anyone else has done... not because i want to be so much better than another, but because i believe i have a calling with each word i write, each time i talk, and each portrait i create, to speak the heart of the Creator. if so, He has chosen me, and therefore my voice must be true to His tone; my message must be from His heart; my song must be unique to my His voice.

in my dress, my tone, my calling in my home, my mothering of my children, and my honoring of my husband, i ache to have a melody that is my own only; a reflection of my Papa-God's beauty in a life well-lived. i have a long way to go... but i do know that it will happen only is watching for visions of Him, not the life-appearance of another, and in listening for His voice, not listening solely (or primarily) to the words and thoughts of another (even another i love and respect!).

i accepted a challenge a few days ago. i'd read quotes on "self reliance" and blog about them each day. the challenge came through seth godin's blog, and i adore him, so i took the challenge. here's my first post. haha!

i saw a blog post today by a woman who's told me she's "obsessed with me" and "obsessed with 'my' work." it was a photography post and as i read, i felt like the object of a saturday night live parody. except that i don't think it was intended that way. which led me to thinking, "am i really that silly?"

yes.

"i praise you, o Lord, for i am fearfully and wonderfully made."

i am overweight. i get angry easily. i am filled with self-doubt and arrogance and judgmentalism and fear and critical thoughts and often hate myself for not being the woman i know God wants me to be.

"your works are wonderful! i know that full well."

i have wave after wave of awe at creation and the One who created it. i gush at the beauty of subjects before my lens and i am astounded at the privelege of capturing love in its purest sense.

"your works are wonderful."

i rarely stop long enough to soak in the raw natural beauty of nature, but when i do, i am speechless.

i shout inwardly in anger at my God who is my Papa and whom i want to rescue me from my wickedness. who has. and whose rescue i know not how to accept.

"i praise you, o Lord, for i am fearfully and wonderfully made."

i fail. i fail. i fail again at loving. at respecting. at disciplining this broken flesh.

i wonder, what would happen if i let it all hang out? the fat? the fear? the anguish at being so weak, so small, so helpless?

can i? can i praise Him? in the midst of so much inadequacy?

i know, i know... shield yourself from the public. people are watching. they see what you share and you become vulnerable.

what would have happened if Paul had internet? if he blogged? would his self-recognition of inadequacy have undermined the truths he spoke so passionately?

i am artist. i am mother. i am wife. i am so little and so very muchafraid... what if i tell the world?

Beautiful-girl...

I am so proud of you!! In the last year you have magically (or with the help of Jesus...) grown so much from a timid little girl, to a brave, confident soon-to-be-young-lady, who can conquer nerves and dive into the unknown to do things most little girls wouldn't even dream of!

I can't believe you're going off to the other coast of Florida to shoot a wedding, and that another photographer requested your services! You'll be such an example of what it looks like to be a smart, funny, creative, talented, and courageous daughter of the King of Kings. You make us proud to be your mommy and daddy.

Remember to pray and ask Jesus for confidence and wisdom, and don't hesitate to ask the grownups for anything you need, or for advice if you need it. Be sure to wear sunscreen and rest when you can. Watch your camera settings (raise your ISO if you need to, choose auto white balance if you have a hard time, and remember to watch your shutter speed!) and most importantly, study the life around you. Your eye is important, and your vision is unique from anyone else's... there's a reason YOU have been chosen for this!! You'll see things differently than anyone else can, and you'll give the gift of your perspective through the lens!!!

So proud of you, angel-girl, and so excited to watch you growing in all you can be in your Papa-God. Love you MORE!!!

i was finishing a recent engagement session gallery when i came upon this image my hubby grabbed. normally we don't take Little on sessions, and usually only the ones who love photography will take turns shooting/assisting. because of special circumstances, we took all five to Orlando's UCF campus for this session with the really awesome Paige & Tim duo. i was in awe of how well everyone did, and this image makes my heart smile... he was so patient and respectful and interested in the goings-on. :)

paddlewheel boats on the intercoastal {florida homeschool adventures}

we've been studying the invention of the paddlewheel, among other advances and inventions of the industrial revolution. despite the foot injuries incurred, we decided the adventure of sailing in the intercoastal waterway near our home was worth the walk. it's a good thing the baby brothers were napping, because that might've been just a bit too much adventure.

this makes me giggle; when you homeschool, isn't it all homework?

we learned that paddleboats were used for transporting cotton (among other items) along the rivers between the states and territories. i loved that a-girl loaded her boat with cotton. :)

this boat designer was a teensy bit more ~~nervous~~ cautious than the others about the launch site.

one of my favorite things about homeschooling is the friendships that are formed without age/grade barriers... i also love that when we partner with other families with multiple siblings, there is a natural connection between them.

i've shared before what prompted our family to dive into the halloween tradition. it isn't that we love it so much (and i'm astounded every year by the way grownups with no kids around get so into it!), but that were convicted a few years ago that we would leave our home on the one night when all our neighbors were guaranteed to visit. we don't generally get to share the gospel, but we build relationship, and it makes my heart glad. and it's a time when we totally let go and say "have at it!" for as much candy as they feel like... uggh! :)

some might say they're too old, but we wanted to let them be kids as long as they can. the four oldest sewed their own costumes from patterns they found online for a ~~dumb~~ cartoon they all like. :)

we did meet one family while trick-or-treating who said, "we call it reformation day..." which led to a sweet moment of fellowship. in discussing it with our oldest, he said, "mom, did you notice we never say 'happy halloween,' but rather, 'merry Christmas' or something like that?"

art and passion {fine art children's photography}

for a while, i've had a desire to take some of my portrait work and infuse scripture into it... i also had a desire to try to sell some art pieces in the local Christian bookstore.

dear martha invited me to bring in some pieces, and when i brought her some florals (which i thought were unique and original) she gently said, "this isn't your passion. why don't you incorporate your babies and your children's work?" out of an inspiring conversation came a vision for what i'm calling the warrior series. i pray that these pieces will be an inspiration to those who see them, and to us, when i hang these pieces on the wall as a reminder of how small we are, and how big our God is, and how large we become in the universe against darkness when we are in His will....

now, lest you think my photographers'-children-models are perfect and well behaved all the time, i present an outtake. this ain't nothin' compared to the faces he made while the waves lapped at my clothes and the lighting malfunctioned and i acted oh-so-human and very nearly forgot the passion and vision with which we'd tromped to the beach to create these images. :)

oh yes, and love the swim trunks hanging out. he's wearing big brothers trousers because in our mad rush we forgot anything besides the orange floral swim trunks, and can you tell how happy he is about that wardrobe impediment to his preschool freedom of creativity?

precious days... {homeschool projects}

i once said i'd never co-op again, after experience led me through some very hard times, and after a season where i realized i was spending more time managing parents and their issues than tending to my own children's experience and education. for the last year-ish, we've found a solution that works very well for our family.

our dear friends have the same number of kiddos and a very similar age lineup, and very comparable curriculum and style/ heart for our children's education and spiritual growth. it's been a natural fit to spend a day a week together doing special projects that line up with what we're doing in our own homes, and using our combined resources to give them a richer teaching.

i think it works for us because we respect each other's individuality, while learning from each other. i only hope my friend and her students gain as much as i know our family does!

this year:

preschool time. we alternate weeks to teach. we're loosely building from early education at home, a book first given to me by a homeschool mama about 10 years ago when my oldest was a little guy!

history. we both use tapestry of grace and are on the same schedule, so we take turns leading a project or two and /or teaching time on our current subject/time period of history.

science for our "middles." beautiful feet history of science was our choice (i'm doing apologia's anatomy with mine as well).

the "big two" are working mostly independently in their second year of the one year adventure novel.

the "second born" for each of us is working together to do a stop-motion film project. if they can stay focused and on-task. otherwise they'll be assigned a more supervised project. ;)

we alternate weekly between my hubby teaching woodworking when we host, and the other momma teaching art. there are some cool projects lined up for these subjects!

these moments are precious to me because i know it's a choice and a sacrifice for us each to give up a day of our own school, but it's a dear gift that helps me get done projects i always wanted to, and it provides encouragement and accountability for my children and myself! (plus it's super-cool to see my hubby teaching something he enjoys as well!)

So often I fear I will not be able to break loose from the sinful patterns of my past (especially in the area of parenting!!) and I place the same fears for my husband on the table. I am reminded again that I NEED to be honest with Jesus and tell Him so- and believe He not only has the power, but desires to break those strongholds. It is for the glory of His name, and I can cling to that even when my own fear and doubt would make me believe all is hopeless!!

fried peach pies {to make up for any healthy eating}

when we had our "state of the union" meeting a few weeks ago, we talked about how we always said we wanted to be "that house" where the kids hang out. we don't believe for one second that it's normal and necessary for kids to hate their families and need to find completely independent social lives away from home (exclusively), and we realized, that time has come - if we want our kids to love home and bring their friends, we need to get more proactive about building friendships that support our family's value system... and are FUN!

thus, family nights. we're going to try to make taco night more of a social event, inviting a family at a time (or two... call us if you're lonely!) for some quality time together. this evening, we invited ourselves to our friends the w's. we started with a variation of taco night - layered bean dip, homemade salsa, jordyn's roasted chickpeas (our version with cumin, coriander, garlic, chili powder, and sea salt), and sangria, of course.

julie's always good for some fabulous home-made fare, and i'd been craving my grandma's fried peach pies; it just so happens julie had a boat-load of peaches waiting more use (after she'd canned and jammed and all kinds of other good stuff, i'm pretty sure.) thank you, w. girls, for laboring over these beauties before we even arrived! on thinking about it, why didn't we all just grab spoons?!

i'll spare you the gory details of how we prepared these babies (i did say fried peach pies, didn't i? read that again, only say it with a south tennessee accent! now you can almost taste their hot, sugary goodness, can't you?! so much for the "less white flour" mission... at least for one night.) suffice it to say, they were mouth-wateringly, sweetly amazing. 'nuff said.

spinach white bean soup (and how we're planning to survive our school year)

i've gotta say, while we've been fairly sure throughout our thirteen years of parenting that we've been called to homeschool our kids at home, there have been lots of times i've been equally sure my Papa thought we could handle more than we knew we could. he's pretty good at knowing, though, and so i try to dive in and figure out how it is He wants me to adapt and grow through each season.

this year we start off (having promised to school through summer again and, well, NOT having done so, at least formally...) teaching an 8th grader, a 7th grader, a 5th grader who's halfway into 6th, a second grader who's got middle child syndrome, and a blue-eyed-baby-boy who's adorable and up-to-no-good... and who likes to sing and talk at the top of his lungs... all.day.long. we plan to complete this school year ahead of where we "should" be, and do it while running our photography business and sharing the job of teaching. huh.

one way i plan to survive is getting back to menu planning. i went to a party years ago (thanks, tami's cousin-in-law!) where all the ladies brought recipes and shopping lists to compile into massive recipe/menu planner notebooks. i've adapted the concept to fit recipes that:

-are higher in whole grains and fiber and protein
-are lower in "bad" carbs (read: white stuff :) )
-are primarily whole foods recipes (with some raw recipes thrown in and some "junk" recipes for fun)
-are fairly easy to prepare
-are reasonably priced
-are a good mix of "unusual" and familiar

in a three-ring binder i've placed sections of five "dinner" recipes for each week, with a grocery list in a pocket at the front. there are three copies of each list, so i shouldn't have to reproduce them for a while. my goal is to automate the process of meals as much as possible, so we can eat well but still "do" the rest of our lives. weekends are a free-for-all, which will leave room for crazy creativity, too, if we're up for it! friday nights are taco nights, so we'll have an extra recipe to make ahead or share.

the idea is that any of us can pick a recipe from the week we've chosen and throw together a quick, healthy meal (and that my awesome hubby, who is rapidly becoming a true renaissance man, but who is prone to buy-one-get-one-free items that may not be our healthiest options, can grab the shopping list for and go!).

oh, good gravy, i've misspelled my own name in the above watermark. don't look. i told you not to look! :)

then, and here's the part i think will really help us, i've assigned a different menu category for each day's breakfast and lunch, and a kiddo to be in charge of it, based on age and ability.

in the back of the binder, there are simple recipes the kids can choose from for their category, asking me to add the items they need to the grocery list. (for instance, there's a "hot cereal" section for b. to choose from for his morning.) this should help automate things, still giving our young chefs some creative license. (and because we've taught them to love to cook independently, i have to be prepared for things like cinnamon added to yellow rice and chicken. which was actually pretty yummy. :) )

there are also some "stock" snack items that they are ok to grab during the day - these will be permanent grocery list items.

if all goes well, i hope to have some batters and breads frozen to grab from for those days when we're in a huge hurry.

this week we tried it, and it was great for the days we stuck to our schedule. looking forward to week two! and here are a couple images from our recipe list this week (with the spinach white bean soup, especially for lori!). enjoy!

we have a cool pot my mom got me for Christmas one year that has a strainer for cooking pasta, topped by a steamer basket. we steamed broccoli, carrots, onions, garlic, and smoked lite turkey sausage (yes, i know, we have an obsession with sausage in this house...) while our whole wheat pasta spirals cooked.

the end result: we tossed all the ingredients with emeril's balsamic dressing recipe. delish.

and from j's day, the promised spinach and white bean soup. (adapted from my next door neighbor's soup with arugula. i like spinach better. :) )

simple spinach and white bean soup

2-3 cloves garlic

one onion

one bag fresh spinach

(we supplemented with frozen spinach, a good thing to have in the freezer)

1/2 cup white wine

2 cans cannelini beans, rinsed and drained (love the creamy texture)

sautee the onion in 2 tablespoons olive oil. add garlic and beans and season to taste with sea salt and fresh cracked pepper (in our house there's almost no such thing as too much cracked black pepper!)

add 6 cups water and the wine. leave a lid to partially cover the soup, allowing it to reduce as it cooks.

stir in the frozen spinach, if using, and simmer for 30-45 minutes. if using fresh spinach, wait to toss in until the last 15 minutes of simmer.

taste and adjust seasonings... enjoy! (if you like, with whole wheat beer biscuits. heavenly!)

summer fun...

we're wrapping up our summer; really, we are! we had our friends over for a day and the boys built rockets (too busy to get good photos!), while the girls baked cookies. could've been the other way around, but everybody had fun... especially the cookie-partakers! (of which i might have been one...)

i'm not gonna lie, i'm pretty nervous about diving back into school. especially with an adorably-ornery blue-eyed almost-three-year-old. but since we said we'd school through the summer and largely didn't, (well, formally, anyway!), we'd best get our buns in gear! so it's planning week, and next week is officially get-back-in-the-groove week, and the NEXT week, well, we plan to start studying. our curriculum. for real! but there will still be rocket-building. and cookie-baking. and the journey continues. :)

datz deli {Gulfcoast Family Destination Dinner}

one of our favorite family pastimes is our monthly outing to a local restaurant; we write a dining out column for Gulfcost Family Magazine. we're fortunate our kids are "little foodies," so they're as adventurous as we are. i never remember to blog the outings, but this one HAD TO BE DONE. Datz Deli in Tampa had my interest when everyone whom we know loves food, mentioned it to us. we fell in love.

called a deli, it has more a pub-like atmosphere, with endless beers on tap, an amazing selection of nachos, sandwiches, and other delights. self-billed as a "restaurant for foodies," they don't disappoint. they spoiled us rotten, and our girl's still talking about the goat brie she loved - and we're still dreaming about the gjetost - a danish "caramel" cheese that amazed us.

the home-made potato chip nachos were delish, but i loved the "plain" ones that came with the kiddos' sandwiches, drizzled with blue cheese glaze. oh, my mouth is watering...

'though we went for lunch, they spoiled us and let us order meatloaf from the dinner menu, and may i please tell you that their meatloaf was ~~better-than-you-know-what~~ absolutely to-die-for yum? (sorry no pic - it was gobbled up too fast...)

they have a gorgeous selection of wines, meats, desserts, and cheeses available for purchase. i'm not usually one for cake at restaurants (it never tastes as good as homemade) but this... well, it was better. my oldest partook, ~~broke my heart :) by~~ announcing that THIS red velvet cake would be his birthday request. ah, well...

most of all, though, i loved the idea of their chef's table, where one can do a lunch or dinner pairing meal, prepared tableside... we're saving for a fabulous date night, i can tell you!

Fresher Veggie Pizza {With Jordyn's Whole Wheat Dough}

...so our sweet friends ky and jordyn loved on our kids for us while we shot a wedding over the weekend. jordyn used her fabulous whole wheat pizza dough and the whole lot of them decorated pizzas. YUM - and we missed it! lucky us, jordyn left the leftover dough ( :) ) and today i whipped up a pizza for lunch.

a little tip: we didn't bake ours right away. we stored it in gallon-size ziploc bags, but be sure to pop it in the freezer to prevent premature rising (and subsquent ziploc bag explosion...)

chopping the veggies finely helps them get tender in the oven.

there is nothing that doesn't taste good with fresh ground pepper (almost.)

normally everyone waits for me to take photos before we eat, but not this time! yummy, hot, delicious.

i have been reading a lot about raw eating and am intrigued; i think next time i might cook the dough first and then top with all the veggies; i do think i'd like it in the oven just long enough to melt the cheeses though... all about compromise! :) and here's the recipe...

Fresher Veggie Pizza on Jordyn’s Pizza Dough (recipe below)

2 small zuchinni
1 red pepper
6-8 cherry tomatoes
½ red onion
2 large cloves garlic
3 Tbsp fresh grated parmesan
¼ cup crumbled Queso Fresco
2-3 sweet-hot peppers (I like Peppadew but any will work)
Olive oil
Sea salt and pepper

Liberally brush pan with olive oil and press dough out with fingers, leaving “dimple marks” as you go. Finely chop all veggies and sprinkle evenly over dough. Next, sprinkle with dry herbs, if desired, and/or cilantro oil. Season to taste with sea salt and pepper. Top with cheeses and a liberal drizzle of olive oil. Bake at 400 degrees for 20-25 minutes (watch for doneness of crust.)
