One of the most popular ingredients that is readily available in most households it baking soda. Among its various uses such as cleaning and baking, baking soda can be used in the treatment of dandruff. Giving your hair a baking soda dandruff treatment is just as effective as using the expensive dandruff shampoo treatments that are available in the market.

Baking soda contains sodium bicarbonate, as its main ingredient, which is very effective in loosening dead cells on the skin. In this regard, dandruff occurs as a result of build up of dead and dried skin cells on the scalp. Using dandruff baking soda helps in relieving dandruffs by removing them through exfoliation. In addition to the above, baking soda promotes the reduction of excess oil on your skull hence lowering dandruff occurrence. Additionally, baking soda which is an alkaline helps in balancing the pH level on your scull by restoring it to equilibrium.

A baking soda dandruff treatment can be applied in two different ways. The first and most simple method is by using water. Simply rinse your scalp and hair using water. Put some baking soda on the palm and make it into a mixture using some water until it forms a paste. Massage your scalp and hair using the resultant paste using the tip of your fingers. Scrub the paste thoroughly using this paste for some time. After you are satisfied that the baking soda paste is evenly spread through out your scalp, you can then rinse it using some warm water and some shampoo.

Another alternative baking soda dandruff treatment is using some baking soda and shampoo. Simply take a tea spoonful of baking soda and add it to a bottle of shampoo. In order to ensure that the baking soda is evenly dispersed in the shampoo, shake up the bottle for about five minutes. After wetting your scalp and hair with some warm water, squeeze some shampoo into your palms and rub them together. Massage your scalp with the mixture and then leave it for about an hour before rinsing it. Doing this every day for about two weeks provides excellent results. If the dandruff is persistent, add some more dandruff baking soda into your shampoo or else sprinkle some baking soda directly on your palms and repeat the process described above.

Apple cider vinegar can be used in a variety of ways for dandruff relief. Other than dandruff relief, it is also known to have a lot of healthy benefits to a wide variety of skin infections. This is because it stimulates the circulation of blood in the skin. Other than this, it combats viruses, yeast and bacteria which are the known common dandruff causes. Most people who have used apple vinegar for dandruff relief, acv for dandruff, have attested to its effectiveness in preventing dandruff infections

Apple cider vinegar contains acidic alpha-hydroxyl which promotes break down of oily and fatty deposits on ones skin hence lowering the levels of sebum on the skin. This in turn reduces the amount of yeast contained in sebum, which is food for dandruff.

As a home remedy for dandruff, acv for dandruff can be applied both in its undiluted and diluted form. For mild dandruff cases, simply dilute a small amount of apple cedar vinegar with some water. Gently massage the scalp using the solution by rubbing it on the skull using your fingers in a circular motion. Allow the solution to remain on the scalp for about an hour (or more depending on the size of your hair and the severity of the dandruff infection) before rinsing your scalp with non-medicated shampoo, preferably baby shampoo. For severe dandruff cases, use undiluted vinegar on the scalp following the same process as above. However, don’t leave it on your scalp for more than an hour.

Another alternative in using apple cedar vinegar for dandruff, acv for dandruff, is to dilute it with warm water as described above and then spray the solution on your hair using a spay bottle. However, take care not to get the solution into your ears and eye as this might result to complications. Leave it for about an hour and then rinse it off using non-medicated shampoo.

Another alternative way of using apple cider vinegar for dandruff, acv for dandruff, is by mixing a table spoonful of apple cedar vinegar, with 2 table spoonfuls of oatmeal or cornmeal and ½ cup grape seed oil. Stir the solution to achieve a thick and coagulated paste. Gently massage your scalp with the resultant paste and leave it for about an hour and then rinse it off using non-medicated shampoo. This method is beneficial in two ways. First, the vinegar balances the pH level of the scalp which is important in relieving and reducing dandruff infection. On the other hand, the presence of grape seed oil promotes the nourishment of your skin as well as soothes the scalp and exfoliates the dead flakes on the scalp.

Dandruff is a chronic skin condition that can be caused by fungal infections or even too much stress. A poor diet is also a possible cause of dandruff. By following a special anti dandruff diet you may be able to eliminate this embarrassing skin disorder. Here are a few diet tips for dandruff sufferers:

Increase your zinc intake

Zinc is a very important nutrient, because it regulates sebum production. The excessive production of sebum on the scalp is one of the main causes of dandruff, because sebum feeds the Pityrosporum ovale fungus that is usually responsible for this skin disorder. By eating foods rich in zinc, you will be able to correct any problems in the function of your sebaceous glands. What is more, it seems that zinc can also promote wound healing. Try to consume foods such as legumes, oats, nuts and grains.

Eat foods rich in vitamin B6

Evidence suggests that vitamin B6 can be effective against dandruff. Not only is vitamin B6 essential for the proper absorption of zinc, but it also plays a very important role in many metabolic processes. There are reasons to believe that dandruff may be partly triggered by the inefficient metabolism of fatty acids and carbohydrates, so anything that facilitates the metabolic processes can be a powerful ally against dandruff. To reap the benefits of vitamin B6, try to include foods like wheat germ, bananas, chicken, salmon and sunflower seeds into your diet.

Stay away from sugar

Sugar can aggravate dandruff in two ways. First, sugar can promote the overgrowth of fungus. Additionally, sugar depletes your body of vitamin B6 and B vitamins in general, as well as vitamins C and E. To reduce your sugar intake, it may not be enough to simply avoid eating sweets. Unfortunately, sugar is hidden in many foods, so try to avoid products that contain substances such as, glucose, lactose, maltose, corn syrup and fructose.

No matter how severe your dandruff may be, there are always ways to correct the problem. By following this anti dandruff diet, you will be able to alleviate and maybe even eliminate this skin condition.

The New England Journal of Medicine recently released a study on the occurrence of acute dandruff in the general population. According to the study, roughly 5% of the population suffers from severe dandruff on a routine basis (a figure much higher than the study’s authors anticipated). 10% of the population experiences occasional outbreaks of severe dandruff, but does not have a chronic problem with dandruff.

The study also found that severe dandruff problems tend to be associated with dry climates. People with the most severe dandruff tend to live in areas with very low humidity. People who lived in very humid areas on the other hand, were unlikely to experience severe dandruff problems.

This discovery of the link between dandruff and humidity is groundbreaking. Until the New England Journal of Medicine released this study, experts believed that severe dandruff was caused primarily by genetics, and most research on dandruff was focused on looking for specific genes related to dandruff problems.

Individuals that live in dry climates, but cannot relocate no matter how bad their dandruff is, are advised to consider using humidifiers in their home and at work. This will not completely compensate for the dry effects of the outside air, but it will help to mitigate its harmful effects on the scalp.

Alternatively, regularly moistening the scalp seems to help as much as using a humidifier does. For optimum effect, it is probably best to moisten the dry scalp about five times a day, but if this is not practical, three times might be sufficient. If after about seven to ten days of this, no improvement is noted, it is probably best to start using a humidifier in addition to moistening the scalp daily. This combination of strategies is almost guaranteed to solve anyone’s acute dandruff problem. As an added bonus, these strategies are very inexpensive and can be employed by anyone.

What causes dandruff? It’s a question that many sufferers are desperate to find the answer to. For people who aren’t afflicted, dandruff can seem like no big deal. But for those who do, especially the ones with more severe dandruff, the problem can range from mild and annoying to chronic and extremely embarrassing.

The itchy, irritated scalp and telltale flakes of skin that are the hallmarks of dandruff can have many contributing causes. People can develop dandruff if they have a scalp that is simply too dry. Dandruff can also be caused by the exact opposite condition – skin that’s too oily; for example, where the person does not shampoo often enough to rid their scalp of excess oil and dead skin cells or simply has glands that produce unusual amounts of oil. Still others suffer dandruff as a result of psoriasis or eczema that affects their scalp. Unfortunately, what causes dandruff for one person is often entirely different than for the next, sometimes making the condition difficult to assess.

Some dandruff sufferers are afflicted by a skin condition referred to as contact dermatitis— or an irritation which comes from exposure to certain hair care products. And for others, their dandruff results from a common and normally occurring fungus called malassezia which has spread out of control.

Some dandruff sufferers can control their condition for the most part by shampooing regularly with a mild product or a medicated shampoo to keep their flakes under control.

seborrheic dermatitis can cause large dandruff flakes

However, others affilicted with dandruff aren’t as fortunate. Another common cause of dandruff is “seborrheic dermatitis” —a condition resulting from dense oil glands on the scalp. The affected portions of the skin are usually red and irritated, and the resulting flakes can be large and greasy or even powdery. The precise causes of the condition are not completely understood, but it is thought by man health professionals that a fungus known as “malassezia” fungus can be a contributing cause, as well as abnormal oil production, general health and nutrition factors and environmental influences.

Regardless of what causes dandruff in your particular case, if a regular routine of shampooing with a commercial dandruff shampoo isn’t doing the trick for you, then you should consider looking into the underlying reasons for your dandruff problem, and in particular, any nutritional or environmental factors that may be causing or contributing to your condition. Often a few simple changes surrounding diet, rest and stress levels can make a huge improvement in your condition, sometimes curing it completely and permanently.

In conjunction with any treatments or remedies that you ultimately use to treat your problem, you should limit your scalp’s exposure to hair styling products which can cause irritation and a build up of material on your skin and hair.

Getting proper nutrition and rest as well as spending time outside in the sun (in moderation and with proper protection of course!) can also help improve your condition.
