Last week I was at the Illustration Master Class. You can see a full review on Irene Gallo’s blog.

The whole week was focused on creating a single illustration, and learning the processes of the Masters. This includes Dan Dos Santos, Greg Manchess, Scott Fischer, Boris Vallejo, Julie Bell, Rebecca Guay, Charles Vess, and Donato Giancola, among others. Below is a small gallery showing my work, from thumbs to finished piece.

I’ve used oils before, but this was the first time I’ve ever used it for an illustration. I’m pleased with the result, and used the piece to learn techniques from each of the instructors.

PNW just did a very nice interview with me. I get to talk about not just my own work, but the future of digital art and where I see it going. I have a computer science background, and it’s fun to play armchair futurist, especially when it comes to extrapolating the future.

This morning I did a little practice painting ice. I’m working on an illustration for the Illustration Master Class and it takes place on an iceberg.

I did these on my iPhone using the Brushes app. I don’t use a stylus, just my fingers.

I’m working on a new illustration now. This is a sample thumbnail page. On the left I explore different compositions for the action shot, and on the right I work on a character and pose. The notebook is thin, and fun to fill pages with different sketches and styles.

Thoughtcrime Experiments, a sci-fi anthology

Thoughtcrime Experiments just released their sci-fi anthology. It’s 7 stories, and a few pieces of art that are more or less unrelated to the stories. I did one of the pieces, as did one of my all-time favs Patrick Farley who did “The Jain’s Death,” which was voted best web comic in 2002 by _me_.

You can Buy the book ($5.09), read the PDF, or read it online (mobile formats also available online). Their rationale on how and why to release this in such an open way is really amazing too.
