5 BIG iPhone Duo Questions That NEED Answers

The iPhone Duo is about a month away, and somehow there are still some pretty big questions about what Apple's first foldable iPhone will actually be like to own.

We already know the headline features.

It starts at $1,999.

It opens into a 7.6-inch display.

It supports multitasking, Apple Pencil, MagSafe, and an entirely new way of using an iPhone.

We also know about the compromises: no Face ID, cameras that don't match Apple's best Pro Max system, and all the uncertainty that comes with a first-generation foldable.

But those aren't necessarily the questions that will determine whether the iPhone Duo is actually good to live with every day.

The biggest unanswered questions are much more practical: apps, durability, the outside screen, battery life, and whether the accessories you already own will actually work the way you expect.

1. Will Your Apps Actually Work Properly on iPhone Duo?

This might be one of the most important questions surrounding the entire iPhone Duo.

Apple's 7.6-inch inner display is one of the biggest reasons to buy the phone.

But simply making an iPhone app bigger isn't enough.

Existing iPhone apps should run on the Duo, but there's a huge difference between an app technically working and an app actually taking advantage of a folding display.

The real promise of the Duo is what happens when developers adapt their apps for the larger canvas.

That could mean better layouts, more information on screen, side-by-side content, and interfaces that change depending on whether the phone is open or closed.

Apple is already giving developers tools and guidance for adapting apps to the Duo.

But Apple can't force developers to use them.

Six months after launch, will your favorite apps feel like they were designed for iPhone Duo — or will most of them still feel like stretched-out iPhone apps?

2. How Durable Is a Folding iPhone REALLY Going to Be?

Apple has talked extensively about the materials used to build the iPhone Duo.

There's a titanium frame.

Ceramic Shield protects the exterior.

The phone carries an IP68 rating.

And the hinge contains more than 100 individual components.

All of that sounds impressive.

But there's one number I'd still really like to know: how many folds can the hinge withstand?

A folding phone isn't something you open five times in an Apple Store.

It's something you could open and close thousands — or potentially tens of thousands — of times over several years.

That introduces questions a normal iPhone doesn't have to answer.

What happens to the hinge after years of use?

How does the crease change?

What happens when dust, lint, and everyday pocket debris become part of the equation?

The iPhone Duo can feel incredibly solid on day one. The bigger question is what that same folding mechanism feels like on day 1,000.

3. Is the 5.4-Inch Outside Screen Actually Big Enough?

The iPhone Duo's outside display measures 5.4 inches.

On paper, that sounds small compared with the iPhones most of us carry today.

But diagonal measurements don't tell the whole story.

The Duo's outside screen uses different proportions, giving it more usable screen area than you might expect from the 5.4-inch number alone.

And a smaller outside screen isn't automatically a disadvantage.

It could make the Duo surprisingly comfortable for quick, one-handed interactions.

Check a notification.

Send a text.

Change a song.

Look something up.

Then open the phone when you actually want the larger display.

That could become one of the Duo's best features.

Or the outside display could feel cramped enough that you constantly find yourself opening the phone just to perform basic tasks.

The question isn't whether 5.4 inches sounds small on a spec sheet. It's whether the outside screen feels big enough that you don't think about its size during normal use.

4. How Good Will iPhone Duo Battery Life REALLY Be?

Battery life gets especially interesting on a foldable because the iPhone Duo effectively has multiple personalities.

Use it closed most of the day and you're powering the smaller outside display.

Open it constantly and you're powering that much larger 7.6-inch inner display.

Apple's battery estimates give us an idea of what the hardware can do under specific conditions.

But real-world Duo usage could vary dramatically from person to person.

Someone who mostly treats it like a compact iPhone could get very different battery life from someone constantly opening it for video, multitasking, games, browsing, or productivity.

And that's before we factor in things like camera use, StandBy, cellular connectivity, and all the other things people actually do with their phones.

With iPhone Duo, battery life may depend less on which phone you bought and more on which version of that phone you spend most of your day using.

5. Will Your Old MagSafe Accessories Actually Work?

This might be the sneakiest question of the five.

Yes, the iPhone Duo supports MagSafe.

But there's a difference between magnetic compatibility and physical compatibility.

The Duo has a very different shape from a traditional iPhone.

It's shorter.

The camera system occupies its own space on the back.

And accessories designed around the dimensions of a traditional iPhone may interact with that shape in unexpected ways.

A MagSafe charger is relatively straightforward.

But what about battery packs?

Wallets?

Car mounts?

Charging stands?

Grips?

The magnets may line up perfectly while the physical accessory itself extends beyond an edge, gets too close to another component, or simply feels awkward on the smaller body.

And that's especially important because many iPhone users already own an entire collection of MagSafe gear.

"Supports MagSafe" doesn't necessarily mean every MagSafe accessory you already own will make sense on iPhone Duo.

That's what makes the iPhone Duo so interesting right now.

We already know most of the big headline stuff.

We know the price.

We know the displays.

We know the cameras.

We know the major features Apple wants to show us.

But none of those things completely tell us what it's going to be like to wake up every morning and actually use an iPhone Duo as your phone.

Will opening the larger display become second nature?

Will developers create app layouts that make a normal iPhone suddenly feel limiting?

Will the smaller outside display turn out to be surprisingly useful?

Will battery anxiety change depending on how often you unfold it?

Will the hinge still feel great years from now?

And will the pile of MagSafe accessories you already own fit this strange new shape?

Those little everyday unknowns could ultimately matter more than almost anything Apple showed during the iPhone Duo announcement.

That's Why I'm Excited About iPhone Duo

I'm not excited about the iPhone Duo because I think it's going to be perfect.

I'm excited because, for the first time in a while, I genuinely don't know what living with a new iPhone is going to be like.

That's unusual.

With a traditional new iPhone, you generally know what you're getting.

The cameras improve.

The processor gets faster.

Battery life changes.

A few new features appear.

But the basic experience remains familiar.

The Duo changes the physical relationship you have with the device.

You have an outside display for quick interactions and a much larger screen waiting inside.

That creates possibilities.

It also creates questions.

And we probably won't get definitive answers to many of them until people stop looking at the iPhone Duo in a store and actually start living with it.

The iPhone Duo's biggest remaining questions aren't really about its headline specifications.

They're about everyday ownership: whether apps truly take advantage of the folding display, how the hinge holds up, whether the 5.4-inch outside screen feels big enough, what real-world battery life looks like, and whether existing MagSafe accessories physically work with the Duo's unusual shape.

Those are the details that could ultimately determine whether Apple's first foldable feels like a genuinely new kind of iPhone or simply an interesting first-generation experiment.

Why Apple's $2,000 iPhone Duo Has Everyone Divided

The iPhone Duo might be one of the most divisive iPhones Apple has made in years — and the strange part is that both sides of the argument make sense.

Some people look at Apple's new $1,999 foldable and see an incredibly expensive first-generation iPhone.

No Face ID.

Camera compromises compared with the Pro Max.

A visible crease in the folding display.

More thickness and weight.

And all the uncertainty that comes with Apple's first attempt at a foldable phone.

Other people look at the exact same device and see one of the most exciting iPhones Apple has released in years.

A 7.6-inch display that folds into your pocket.

Two apps running side by side.

Apple Pencil support.

Tabletop modes.

And an iPhone that finally does something physically different again.

The disagreement isn't really about what the iPhone Duo is. It's about which compromises matter — and how much value you put on what folding actually adds.

The $1,999 Price Is Only Part of the Problem

Let's start with the obvious number.

$1,999.

That's a lot of money for an iPhone.

But in the premium foldable-phone market, that price isn't actually as unusual as it sounds.

Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold8 starts at around $1,900, and depending on the storage configuration, it can already cost more than $2,000.

Apple didn't suddenly invent a completely new price category.

The more interesting question is what people expect when Apple asks them to spend that much money.

If you're paying nearly $2,000 for an iPhone, it's reasonable to expect Apple's best technology.

And yet the iPhone Duo does not give you everything available on the best traditional iPhone.

There's no Face ID.

The camera system isn't as capable as the Pro Max.

The device is heavier and thicker when closed.

There's still a visible crease in the inner display.

And this is Apple's first foldable, so nobody really knows how these devices will feel after thousands of opening and closing cycles.

The price itself isn't necessarily outrageous for a premium foldable. The tension comes from asking people to accept compromises on a $2,000 iPhone.

So Why Do People Still Want the iPhone Duo?

This is where the price argument gets interesting.

The people excited about the iPhone Duo haven't somehow missed the compromises.

They know it costs $1,999.

They know there's no Face ID.

They know the cameras aren't as good as the Pro Max.

They know the crease is still visible at certain angles.

And some of them still desperately want one anyway.

I'm in that group.

I absolutely do not need an iPhone Duo.

And I want one.

That contradiction only starts making sense when you stop judging the Duo entirely like a normal iPhone.

A Normal iPhone Can't Do This

Take an iPhone Pro Max.

You can give it better cameras.

You can give it Face ID.

You can make it lighter.

You can make it cheaper.

But there's one thing a normal Pro Max absolutely cannot do.

It can't open.

That sounds ridiculously obvious, but that's really the entire point of the iPhone Duo.

Opening the phone doesn't simply give you a physically larger version of the same interface.

It changes what the device can do.

You suddenly have a 7.6-inch display in your pocket.

You can put two apps next to each other.

Apps can use layouts that feel closer to an iPad.

You can use an Apple Pencil.

You can partially fold the phone and place it on a table for FaceTime.

You can use the folding design like a built-in camera stand.

You can even position it almost like a tiny laptop.

Not all of those modes are going to matter to everybody.

Some of Apple's demonstrations are arguably a little ridiculous.

I am personally not putting my $2,000 iPhone Duo down on concrete just because the hinge technically allows it.

But you don't need every possible folding mode to be useful.

The real question isn't whether the Duo is better than a Pro Max at everything. It's whether your Pro Max can do the particular things you want from a folding display.

Folding Phones Are Also Just Kind of Fun

There's another reason people are excited about the Duo, and this one is almost impossible to put on a spec sheet.

Folding phones are fun.

Maybe that's partly nostalgia.

There was a time when phones physically did things.

Flip phones snapped shut.

The Motorola Razr had its distinctive folding design.

The Sidekick had a screen that physically moved.

Phones came in strange shapes and used all kinds of interesting mechanisms.

Then smartphones got better and better.

But eventually almost all of them became some variation of the same basic object: a rectangle of glass.

I love my iPhone 17 Pro.

But there's not much surprise left in physically picking one up.

The iPhone Duo brings some of that interaction back.

You open it.

You close it.

You partially fold it.

You prop it up.

There's something satisfying about a piece of technology that actually moves.

Is nostalgia a rational reason to spend $2,000 on a phone?

No.

But it does help explain why the Duo is creating a level of excitement that another slightly faster rectangle of glass probably wouldn't.

Two People Can See Completely Different Products

This is where the divide around the iPhone Duo starts making a lot more sense.

The things Apple took away are incredibly easy to understand.

Everyone understands Face ID.

Everyone understands wanting the best cameras.

Everyone understands that $2,000 is a lot of money.

And everyone can look at the inner display, find the crease, and say, "Yep. There it is."

Those compromises are obvious.

The value of having a phone that folds is more complicated.

It only becomes meaningful when the folding design lets you do something you genuinely care about.

So two people can look at the exact same iPhone Duo and effectively see two completely different products.

One person sees a $2,000 iPhone that's worse at certain things their current iPhone already does.

The other sees a device capable of things their current iPhone physically cannot do.

Neither person is necessarily wrong. They're simply putting value in completely different places.

The Biggest iPhone Duo Wildcard Is Software

There's one enormous variable that could ultimately determine which side of this argument looks smarter.

The software.

If I'm spending $1,999 on a folding iPhone, I don't want normal iPhone apps that simply become larger when I open the phone.

I want the larger display to create experiences that make me understand why I bought a foldable in the first place.

Apple clearly understands that problem.

The company is already showing developers how apps can adapt to the larger display, use different layouts, respond to different positions, and take advantage of the extra screen space.

But Apple can't do all of it.

Developers actually have to care.

Imagine owning the Duo for six months and discovering that most of your apps simply stretch across the larger display.

That would be a problem.

And suddenly the people calling the Duo an expensive gimmick would have a much stronger argument.

But if developers embrace the format, something very different could happen.

We may discover genuinely useful reasons for folding an iPhone that Apple hasn't even demonstrated yet.

Apps could evolve specifically around multitasking.

Creative tools could take advantage of Apple Pencil.

Communication apps could use the larger screen in ways that make the closed iPhone feel limiting afterward.

The difference between "expensive gimmick" and "I don't want to go back to a normal iPhone" may ultimately come down to what developers do with the screen.

At $2,000, "Pretty Good" Isn't Enough

This brings the conversation right back to the price.

I don't think $1,999 automatically makes the iPhone Duo a bad product.

Again, the price is roughly in line with other premium foldable phones.

But spending $2,000 dramatically changes how forgiving people are willing to be.

People don't necessarily want to hear that the Duo is "pretty good for a first-generation product."

They spent $2,000.

They don't want Apple to get close.

They want Apple to nail it.

And judged purely as a traditional iPhone, the Duo is not Apple's best phone in every category.

If your priorities are the absolute best traditional iPhone cameras, Face ID, a familiar design, and fewer first-generation compromises, a Pro Max probably makes more sense.

But if the thing you're specifically interested in is having an iPhone that folds, physically changes shape, and becomes something different when you open it, the answer gets much less obvious.

The Duo isn't trying to win every traditional iPhone comparison. Its entire reason for existing is the thing that happens when you open it.

The Things the Duo Does Worse Are Easier to Measure

This is also why I think some of the early arguments about whether Apple "got the Duo right" are premature.

Everything the iPhone Duo does worse is easy to put on a list.

No Face ID.

Camera compromises.

More weight.

More thickness.

A $1,999 starting price.

A visible crease.

Those are concrete.

The things the Duo potentially does better are much more experiential.

Running two useful apps side by side.

Editing something with Apple Pencil.

Putting the phone on a table for a FaceTime call when you don't have your iPad.

Opening it because you suddenly want more screen.

Then closing it and putting it back in your pocket.

Maybe after six months, all of that turns out to be a gimmick.

Maybe Duo owners discover that they barely open the phone and would have been happier with a Pro Max.

That's completely possible.

But the opposite could happen too.

People could use the Duo for a week, go back to a normal iPhone, and immediately miss having the larger screen available in their pocket.

We won't really know how valuable the folding design is until people stop testing the Duo and start living with it.

Why the iPhone Duo Has Everyone Divided

That's ultimately why this phone is producing such wildly different reactions.

We're all looking at the same $1,999 iPhone.

We're just not judging the same things.

If you're focused on everything the Duo gives up compared with an iPhone Pro Max, the product can look ridiculous.

You're spending more money and accepting compromises in areas Apple has spent years perfecting.

But if you're focused on everything you're gaining that a normal iPhone physically cannot do, the Duo can look ridiculously exciting.

Personally, I'm excited about it.

I don't think it's perfect.

I don't think Apple should automatically get a pass on the compromises just because this is its first foldable.

And $2,000 is still a huge amount of money.

But this is the first iPhone in a while where I genuinely don't know how it's going to change the way I use my phone until I actually have one.

That's what makes the Duo interesting.

It opens.

It moves.

It can be used in strange positions.

And for better or worse, people actually have strong opinions about it.

The iPhone Duo isn't dividing people because one side understands the phone and the other doesn't. It's dividing people because we're assigning value to completely different parts of the experience.

🍎 Quick Take

The $1,999 iPhone Duo makes obvious compromises compared with Apple's best traditional iPhones, including Face ID, cameras, weight, thickness, and the visible fold in its display.

But the folding design also gives it capabilities a normal iPhone physically cannot offer — and whether those capabilities matter to you completely changes how reasonable or ridiculous the Duo looks.

The biggest unknown may be software. If developers give people genuinely useful reasons to open the 7.6-inch display every day, the Duo could become difficult to compare with a normal iPhone at all.

This is what I'm most curious about now that the Duo is real.

Do the compromises kill the appeal for you?

Is $1,999 simply too much to spend on an iPhone without Face ID and Apple's best camera system?

Or does the ability to open the phone into a 7.6-inch display fundamentally change the equation?

Would you actually use two apps at once?

Would you use Apple Pencil?

Would tabletop mode or the larger screen become part of your everyday routine?

Or would you open the phone for two weeks and then slowly go back to using it like a normal iPhone?

That's the question the spec sheet can't answer — and it's probably the question that will ultimately determine whether the iPhone Duo succeeds.

iPhone Duo - Did Apple Actually FIX Foldable Phones?

Apple was ridiculously late to foldable phones. After seeing the iPhone Duo, I’m starting to think that may have been exactly the point.

Samsung, Google, and other companies have spent years building foldable phones and working through the strange problems that come with them.

Visible display creases.

Bulky hinges.

Camera compromises.

Software that sometimes feels like a stretched phone interface instead of something designed around a folding screen.

Apple watched all of that happen from the sidelines.

Now the company has finally entered the category with the $1,999 iPhone Duo — and some of the solutions Apple came up with are much more interesting than I expected.

The iPhone Duo isn’t perfect, but Apple may have found ways to make some of the biggest foldable-phone compromises much easier to live with.

Apple Is Years Late to Foldable Phones

There’s no way around it: Apple did not invent the foldable phone.

It wasn’t even close.

Samsung has released multiple generations of Galaxy Fold devices. Google has built its own folding phones. Other manufacturers have spent years experimenting with hinges, flexible displays, software layouts, cameras, durability, and battery life.

Apple waited.

And normally, showing up this late would look like a disadvantage.

But foldable phones are a little different because being first also meant dealing with a long list of very visible compromises.

Early folding displays had obvious creases.

Devices were often thick.

Apps did not always know what to do with the extra screen space.

And making room for cameras, sensors, batteries, and hinges inside an already thin smartphone created all kinds of engineering problems.

Apple didn’t need to figure out how to make a phone fold. It needed to figure out how to make a folding iPhone feel less compromised.

Did Apple Fix the Foldable Display Crease?

The crease is probably the most obvious problem with foldable phones.

You open this giant, expensive, beautiful display — and there’s a line running right through the middle of it.

Apple hasn’t magically eliminated that.

A screen that physically bends still has to bend somewhere.

But the iPhone Duo uses a matte inner display treatment designed to reduce reflections and make the fold less visually distracting.

That matters because reflections are one of the things that make a crease stand out so much.

Under the wrong lighting, even a relatively shallow fold can suddenly become obvious.

By cutting down some of those reflections, Apple appears to have made the center fold much harder to notice during normal use.

The goal was never going to be making the crease physically disappear. The real goal is making you stop noticing it while you’re actually using the phone.

And based on what Apple has shown so far, the Duo appears to get surprisingly close.

Yes, you can still find the crease if you look for it.

Yes, certain lighting and angles will make it more visible.

But that doesn’t necessarily mean the display experience is ruined.

We went through something similar when the iPhone X introduced the notch.

At launch, people obsessed over it.

Then most users simply got used to it.

If the iPhone Duo’s crease fades into the background the same way during everyday use, that would be a major improvement for foldables.

The iPhone Duo Hides a Camera Under the Display

The folding display creates another problem: where do you put the inner camera?

Apple’s answer is one of the most futuristic things about the iPhone Duo.

The FaceTime camera sits underneath the 7.6-inch inner display.

Instead of cutting another visible hole into the screen, Apple hides the camera behind the display itself.

That technology isn’t perfect either.

Depending on the background and lighting, you may still be able to tell where the camera sits beneath the screen.

But on brighter backgrounds, it can become extremely difficult to notice.

And that makes the technology more interesting than simply asking how many megapixels the camera has.

Apple has now shipped an iPhone with a camera underneath the display — and that could eventually lead to iPhones with fewer visible interruptions in the screen at all.

Future generations could improve the camera quality.

The display above it could become more uniform.

And eventually, cameras and sensors may become nearly invisible until you actually need them.

The iPhone Duo may be giving us an early look at where Apple wants its displays to go next.

No Face ID Is Still a Compromise

One of the strangest changes on the iPhone Duo is the lack of Face ID.

Apple instead uses Touch ID built into the side button.

And no, I don’t think removing Face ID should be treated like some kind of upgrade.

Face ID is incredibly convenient because authentication usually happens without you having to think about it.

You look at your iPhone and it unlocks.

Moving back to a fingerprint sensor means physically reaching for the button.

But Apple has added another feature that makes that compromise more interesting: Apple Watch Unlock.

If you’re already wearing an authenticated Apple Watch, the Watch can help unlock the iPhone Duo without forcing you to constantly reach for Touch ID.

That doesn’t make losing Face ID better. It does make the compromise smarter.

If Apple couldn’t fit the normal Face ID hardware into a foldable this thin, Touch ID combined with Apple Watch Unlock is a pretty reasonable solution.

The Most Important Question Is What Happens When You Open It

A great hinge doesn’t matter if opening the phone just gives you a gigantic iPhone app.

A subtle crease doesn’t matter if the software has no idea what to do with the extra space.

And an under-display camera doesn’t matter if the folding screen itself doesn’t actually change how you use the device.

This may be the most important thing Apple got right with the iPhone Duo.

When you open it, the software changes with the hardware.

You can pair apps.

You can run multiple apps on the larger display.

Apps can adapt to iPad-style layouts.

The Dock and interface can take advantage of the extra room.

The Duo supports Apple Pencil.

And apps can transition between the outer screen and the much larger folding display.

The iPhone Duo doesn’t rely on one magical folding feature. Apple built a bunch of smaller reasons to actually open the device.

Some Foldable iPhone Use Cases Are Better Than Others

That doesn’t mean every demonstration Apple showed makes perfect sense.

Some of the positioning options are going to look a little ridiculous.

I am not putting a $1,999 folding iPhone screen-down on concrete just because Apple says I technically can.

And turning the device into a tiny laptop-style setup can waste a lot of the available display space.

But I also think that criticism misses the bigger point.

You don’t have to use the Duo in every possible configuration.

Maybe you open it completely and use the full 7.6-inch display.

Maybe you keep two apps open side by side.

Maybe you partially fold it for a FaceTime call.

Maybe you use the folding design like a built-in tripod for a photo or video.

And when you don’t need any of that, you close it and use it like a regular iPhone.

That flexibility is much more compelling than trying to invent one single reason everybody needs a foldable phone.

Apple May Have Been Right to Wait

This is ultimately why Apple being late suddenly makes a lot more sense.

Samsung and everyone else had to figure out whether foldable phones were even practical.

They spent years improving hinges.

Making folding displays more durable.

Reducing thickness.

Improving software.

Learning how people actually use these devices.

Apple got to watch all of it.

Then it entered the market once several of the biggest problems finally had believable solutions.

That doesn’t mean Apple solved everything.

The crease still exists.

The under-display camera still has limitations.

Face ID is gone.

The camera system isn’t identical to Apple’s best Pro Max camera setup.

And $1,999 is an enormous amount of money for a phone.

But Apple appears to have waited until folding an iPhone no longer required quite as many obvious compromises.

Is the $1,999 iPhone Duo Worth It?

That’s a completely different question.

A clever hinge doesn’t automatically make a $1,999 phone worth buying.

A subtle crease doesn’t make two thousand dollars cheap.

And having a giant screen in your pocket only matters if you actually use that extra space.

For some people, the iPhone Duo may be incredibly useful.

For others, a normal iPhone will still do everything they need while costing dramatically less.

The real test will be whether the larger display changes your everyday behavior enough to justify the price.

Do you actually use two apps at once?

Do you read, work, watch video, edit photos, or navigate differently?

Does the folding camera design solve real problems?

Does carrying one device that can transform between a compact phone and a small tablet replace something else you would normally carry?

The iPhone Duo doesn’t need to be the best value in the iPhone lineup. It needs to make the folding experience valuable enough that some people genuinely prefer it.

Did Apple Actually Fix Foldable Phones?

No.

At least not in the sense that every compromise has magically disappeared.

There is still a crease.

There are still hardware tradeoffs.

The price is still extreme.

And this is still a first-generation Apple product entering a category that competitors have been refining for years.

But “fixing” foldables doesn’t necessarily mean reaching perfection.

It may simply mean reducing the compromises enough that the folding design finally feels worth using.

Apple appears to have approached the crease, cameras, authentication, multitasking, and folding software as separate problems that all needed their own solutions.

And when you combine enough of those solutions, the device starts feeling much more complete.

Apple didn’t invent the foldable phone. It may have waited until it could build one that feels less like an experiment.

🍎 Quick Take

The iPhone Duo still has compromises, but Apple’s approach to the crease, under-display camera, Touch ID, Apple Watch Unlock, multitasking, and adaptive software makes this first-generation foldable much more interesting than I expected.

The bigger question isn’t whether Apple made the crease disappear. It’s whether Apple reduced enough of the friction around foldables that people stop thinking about the compromises and start thinking about what the larger screen lets them do.

If that happens, Apple being years late to foldable phones may turn out to have been a feature rather than a failure.

The iPhone Duo doesn’t need to make foldables perfect. It needs to make them useful enough that the compromises stop dominating the conversation.

Apple’s iPhone Duo Is Finally Real — Here’s Everything You Need to Know

Apple's first foldable iPhone is officially here — and it's called the iPhone Duo.

After years of rumors, leaks, prototypes, and speculation, Apple has finally entered the foldable smartphone market with a $1,999 iPhone that opens into the largest iPhone display Apple has ever made.

The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999, with preorders beginning October 16 and availability starting October 23.

But the price and folding display are only part of the story.

Apple isn't positioning the iPhone Duo as simply an iPhone that bends. The company has redesigned parts of the iPhone experience around a device that can work as a compact phone, a much larger display, a multitasking device, a camera stand, and something surprisingly close to a pocketable iPad.

The real question is whether Apple has finally given people a reason to want a foldable phone — or simply created the most expensive iPhone ever.

Meet the iPhone Duo

The iPhone Duo uses two displays.

When closed, you get a 5.4-inch outer display designed to work like a more compact traditional iPhone.

Open the device and you're looking at a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR display.

That's dramatically larger than a normal iPhone display and finally gives Apple enough screen space to rethink how apps work on an iPhone.

Apple says the hinge contains around 100 individual components, while the titanium frame and Ceramic Shield are designed to give the Duo the durability expected from a modern flagship iPhone.

The device is also IP68 rated and will initially be available in two colors: Star White and Night Sky.

The Bigger Display Is the Entire Point

We've known Apple could physically build a folding iPhone for years.

The much more interesting question was what Apple would actually do with the extra screen space.

Now we have the answer.

The iPhone Duo introduces iPad-style multitasking and app pairing, allowing multiple apps and more complex layouts to take advantage of the 7.6-inch display.

Apple showed apps transitioning between the outer and inner displays, along with a dock positioned on the side of the larger interface.

Developers including Zoom, Slack, and Netflix have already demonstrated adaptations for the new form factor.

This may be the most important part of the entire iPhone Duo: Apple isn't simply stretching iPhone apps across a bigger screen.

That was always going to determine whether a folding iPhone felt genuinely useful or like a very expensive novelty.

Apple Pencil Is Coming to the iPhone

One of the biggest surprises is Apple Pencil support.

The iPhone Duo works with the USB-C Apple Pencil on either display, marking the first time Apple has officially brought Apple Pencil support to an iPhone.

On a normal iPhone, Pencil support probably wouldn't make much sense.

On a 7.6-inch folding display, the idea becomes much more interesting.

You could take notes while referencing another app, annotate documents, work with images, or use the Duo more like a tiny iPad that happens to fold into your pocket.

Apple Pencil support is another sign that Apple sees the iPhone Duo as more than a normal iPhone with a flexible screen.

Touch ID Is Back — But Face ID Isn't

Apple made another major change to accommodate the folding design.

The iPhone Duo uses Touch ID integrated into the side button instead of Face ID.

Multiple fingerprints can be registered, and Apple Watch can also be used to unlock the device.

This is one of the more controversial compromises surrounding the Duo.

Face ID has been part of Apple's flagship iPhone experience for years, so moving back to Touch ID on Apple's most expensive iPhone is unusual.

At the same time, fitting Face ID hardware into an extremely thin folding design would have created additional engineering challenges.

The Duo may be Apple's most advanced iPhone in some areas while deliberately giving up features found on a traditional Pro Max.

The Cameras Take Advantage of the Folding Design

Apple has also created camera features that take advantage of the fact that the iPhone Duo can stand up on its own.

Partially fold the device and it can act almost like its own tripod.

The outer display can show your subject a live preview while you use the rear cameras, making it easier to frame higher-quality portraits and group shots.

The Duo also supports full-body wide-angle selfies, Smart Take scene tracking, Center Stage, and new FaceTime experiences designed around the folding form factor.

There's even a hidden inner FaceTime camera positioned behind the display.

Apple also introduced Dual Capture and Duo FaceTime, expanding the ways both displays and cameras can work together.

None of these features alone justify a $1,999 phone, but together they show why a folding device can do things a traditional slab-shaped iPhone physically cannot.

The iPhone Duo Still Has a Serious Camera Compromise

The Duo includes Apple's Fusion main camera and a 48MP ultra-wide camera, but it doesn't get the dedicated telephoto camera you'd expect from a Pro Max.

Apple instead offers a 2x telephoto option through the main camera system.

Video features include 4K recording at up to 120 frames per second and 4K time lapse.

For many people, this will be one of the hardest parts of the iPhone Duo to justify.

If you're spending nearly $2,000 on an iPhone, it's natural to expect the absolute best camera system Apple offers.

But that doesn't appear to be what the Duo is trying to be.

The iPhone Duo isn't an iPhone Pro Max that folds. It's a different category of iPhone with a different set of priorities.

Battery Life Is Better Than You Might Expect

Battery life was another huge question surrounding Apple's first foldable.

The battery is physically divided between both halves of the phone, but iOS manages the system as a single battery.

Apple rates the iPhone Duo for up to 31 hours of video playback when using both displays.

Using only the outer display can extend video playback up to 44 hours.

Apple also claims around 24 hours of mixed use.

Fast charging can take the battery to approximately 50 percent in 20 minutes.

For a device powering two displays and a much larger internal screen, those numbers are encouraging.

Of course, we'll have to wait for real-world testing to know what living with the Duo actually looks like.

The Crease Might Finally Be Less Annoying

The visible crease has been one of the most persistent complaints about foldable smartphones.

Apple says it has minimized the crease using its display construction and a nano-texture treatment.

That doesn't necessarily mean the crease has disappeared completely.

We won't really know how noticeable it is until people can use the iPhone Duo outside of Apple's carefully controlled demonstrations.

Still, Apple has had years to watch Samsung, Google, Huawei, and others improve folding displays.

Being late gave Apple the opportunity to learn from nearly a decade of foldable hardware development.

StandBy Gets Much More Interesting

The folding design also creates some smaller features that could end up being surprisingly useful.

The Duo can sit partially folded on a table, making it possible to use StandBy mode even when the phone isn't connected to a charger.

The Folio kickstand case wraps around both halves of the phone and gives users additional ways to position the device for video, FaceTime, reading, or other hands-free uses.

This isn't the feature that sells a $2,000 phone.

But it's exactly the kind of small interaction that could make a folding iPhone feel noticeably different in everyday use.

🍎 Quick Take

The most important thing about the iPhone Duo isn't that Apple finally made a folding screen.

It's that Apple appears to have built software, multitasking, cameras, accessories, and new interactions around the fact that the phone folds.

That's what the first Apple foldable needed to do. The question now is whether those differences are valuable enough to justify $1,999.

Why Apple Waited So Long

Apple is entering the foldable market years after Samsung, Google, Huawei, and other manufacturers.

But Apple has rarely built its strategy around being first.

Early folding phones were thick, expensive, fragile, and often suffered from awkward software that didn't make great use of the additional display space.

Over time, hinges improved. Displays improved. Apps became more adaptable. Consumers became more familiar with the concept.

At the same time, traditional smartphone upgrades became increasingly incremental.

Faster chips, slightly better cameras, and brighter displays are useful, but they don't fundamentally change what an iPhone is.

The iPhone Duo gives Apple something it hasn't had in years: a way to change the physical experience of using an iPhone.

Is the iPhone Duo Worth $1,999?

That's going to be the question hanging over this device until people actually start using it.

At $1,999, the Duo isn't aimed at the average iPhone buyer.

You can buy an excellent traditional iPhone for dramatically less money.

You can also buy an iPhone and an iPad while spending around the same amount or less, depending on the models you choose.

So the iPhone Duo has to offer something more valuable than simply combining two devices on paper.

Its appeal will come down to whether having that larger display with you all the time genuinely changes how you use your phone.

Do you actually multitask more?

Do you read or work on the larger screen?

Do you leave your iPad at home?

Do the folding camera features become part of your normal routine?

If the Duo changes your behavior, $1,999 may make sense for a certain kind of user. If you mostly keep it closed, a normal iPhone is probably the much smarter purchase.

iPhone Duo Price and Release Date

The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999.

Storage options range from 256GB to 2TB.

Preorders begin October 16.

The iPhone Duo officially becomes available on October 23.

The device is eSIM-only worldwide.

That gives us more than a month between Apple's announcement and the first customers actually getting their hands on the device.

And that's when we'll finally be able to answer the questions Apple couldn't answer on stage: real battery life, durability, the crease, app compatibility, and what the Duo is actually like to live with every day.

So, Did Apple Make Foldable Phones Interesting?

For years, the foldable iPhone was one of those products that always seemed to exist somewhere in Apple's future.

Now it's real.

And Apple didn't simply make an iPhone with a screen that bends.

It added multitasking, Apple Pencil support, new camera experiences, multiple display modes, app transitions, and software designed around having a device that can physically change shape.

There are also obvious compromises.

It's incredibly expensive.

There's no Face ID.

There's no dedicated Pro-style telephoto camera.

And we still don't know how the folding display, battery, hinge, and software will hold up after months of everyday use.

But for the first time in years, Apple's most interesting new iPhone isn't interesting because it's faster. It's interesting because it can actually change how you use it.

And that might be the strongest argument for the iPhone Duo.

Apple’s $2,000 Foldable iPhone Makes iPhones EXCITING Again!

For the first time in years, Apple may be making an iPhone that can actually do something the one in your pocket physically cannot do.

Your current iPhone probably already does almost everything you need.

Messages. Safari. Maps. YouTube. Photos. Instagram. Games.

A newer iPhone may do all of those things faster or with a better camera, but the way you actually use the phone hasn't changed very much.

That's one of the reasons upgrading an iPhone has started to feel less exciting.

You can compare an iPhone 15 Pro with an iPhone 17 Pro and find plenty of differences, but hand either one to an iPhone user and they immediately know how it works.

Apple's foldable iPhone could finally change the experience instead of simply improving the specifications.

Why the Foldable iPhone Is Different

The most interesting thing about Apple's foldable iPhone isn't simply that Apple figured out how to make an iPhone fold.

Samsung, Google, and other smartphone companies have already been building foldable phones for years.

Apple is late.

What matters is what happens when you actually open the device.

Reports have suggested the Fold could have a display around 5.5 inches when closed.

By modern iPhone standards, that's actually fairly small.

But open the phone and the internal display could measure roughly 7.8 inches.

That's getting into small iPad territory — except this time the screen fits in your pocket.

A Pocketable iPad Could Be the Real Appeal

This is where Apple's Fold starts becoming much more interesting.

If Apple simply stretches existing iPhone apps across a giant screen, the entire concept becomes difficult to justify.

Why spend around $2,000 on a folding phone just to get a gigantic version of the same iPhone interface?

You could just buy an iPhone Pro Max.

But reports surrounding Apple's Fold have suggested the larger display could take advantage of more iPad-like layouts.

Think about Mail.

On a normal iPhone, you generally see your inbox, tap a message, and then the message replaces the inbox.

On a much larger screen, Apple could show your inbox on one side and the selected email on the other.

The same idea could apply to Messages, Maps, Safari, and other apps.

None of that is revolutionary on an iPad or an existing foldable phone.

But your current iPhone can't do it — and your iPad doesn't fit in your pocket.

Foldable iPhone Multitasking Could Change Everything

A nearly eight-inch display also raises a much bigger question.

Will Apple finally let us properly multitask on an iPhone?

If Apple gives the Fold that much screen space, it needs to let users take advantage of it.

Imagine keeping Safari open while taking notes.

Watching a video while answering a message.

Keeping Maps visible while using another app.

The Fold doesn't need to become a Mac, and it doesn't even need to replace everything an iPad can do.

But a device this expensive shouldn't simply become a larger iPhone that still forces you to do one thing at a time.

If the bigger screen actually changes how we use iOS, that's when the Fold starts becoming more than a gimmick.

The Foldable Design Could Change the Camera Too

The folding design could also create completely new ways to use the iPhone's cameras.

Partially folding the device could allow you to set the phone down and take a photo or video without carrying a tripod.

The outer display could potentially act as a preview while using the higher-quality rear cameras, allowing the person you're photographing to see themselves.

Open the device completely and suddenly you could have an enormous viewfinder for shooting photos or video.

Would any one of those features justify a $2,000 iPhone?

Probably not.

But combine enough of these differences and you start getting an iPhone you may actually use differently.

Stop Upgrading for Specs

This is the same question I've been asking about recent iPhone upgrades.

What does the new phone actually let you do that the phone you already own cannot?

A processor that's 20 percent faster might look great on a specification sheet.

A brighter display is useful.

A slightly improved camera is always welcome.

But those improvements don't necessarily change your everyday experience.

The Fold potentially does.

Maybe you start reading more because the larger display feels closer to an e-reader.

Maybe editing something on your phone stops feeling cramped.

Maybe you use two apps at the same time.

Maybe you stop bringing your iPad everywhere.

And maybe, after getting used to the larger folding display, going back to a normal iPhone suddenly feels limiting.

That's the kind of upgrade that matters — when the experience changes, not simply the number on the box.

Apple Being Late to Foldables Might Actually Help

Apple doesn't get any credit for inventing the folding phone.

Samsung and other manufacturers have already spent years figuring out what works — and what doesn't.

Early foldable phones have dealt with thick designs, strange hinges, visible display creases, and apps that don't always know what to do with the extra screen space.

Apple has had the luxury of watching all of that happen.

Now we get to find out what Apple learned.

That doesn't mean the first Fold will be perfect.

Far from it.

Apple has a long history of releasing first-generation products that improve dramatically over the next few versions.

The original Apple Watch looks primitive compared with modern models.

The original iPhone didn't even have an App Store.

The first foldable iPhone could be the beginning of something much bigger, even if the first version comes with compromises.

Should You Spend $2,000 on Apple's Foldable iPhone?

I'm probably going to buy one.

But I also make videos about Apple, so I'm not exactly the average customer.

For most people, the better move is probably to wait.

See what the real battery life is like.

See how noticeable the crease is.

See what Apple actually does with the software.

And most importantly, see whether the larger display genuinely changes anything for you.

If it doesn't, buy a normal iPhone.

You'll save a ridiculous amount of money.

A $2,000 Fold only makes sense if the folding experience gives you something valuable enough that a normal iPhone starts feeling limited.

The Fold Could Make iPhones Exciting Again

Apple has spent years making the iPhone better.

Better processors.

Better cameras.

Better displays.

Better battery life.

But the Fold feels different because Apple isn't simply trying to make another better iPhone.

It's trying to make the iPhone into something else.

Maybe it works.

Maybe a few years from now, millions of people are carrying foldable iPhones and wondering how they ever went back to a normal display.

Or maybe Apple sells relatively few of them and most people decide folding phones aren't worth the tradeoffs.

We don't know yet.

But at least we're finally asking a different question.

The question isn't whether the next iPhone will be better than the previous one.

It probably will be.

The much more interesting question is whether Apple's foldable iPhone gives you a reason to use your phone differently.

That's ultimately what will decide whether Apple's Fold becomes the future of the iPhone or just an expensive experiment.

Apple’s $2,000 Foldable iPhone Has FEWER Features?!

Apple’s first foldable iPhone could cost more than $2,000, making it the most expensive iPhone the company has ever sold.

And somehow, it may actually have fewer features than the iPhone Pro Max.

No Face ID.

No dedicated telephoto camera.

And until fairly recently, there were even questions about whether MagSafe would survive the transition to a folding design.

That creates a pretty strange situation.

If Apple is asking somewhere around $2,000 — or potentially even more — for its first foldable iPhone, what exactly are we paying for?

The Foldable iPhone May Lose Face ID

One of the biggest rumored compromises involves Face ID.

Rather than using Apple's familiar facial authentication system, the foldable iPhone is expected to use Touch ID built into the power button, similar to what Apple already does on some iPads.

There are definitely people who will be perfectly happy with that.

Some people still prefer Touch ID.

But after years of using Face ID, it has become one of those features that almost disappears into the way you use an iPhone.

You pick up the phone.

You look at it.

It unlocks.

Passwords authenticate. Apple Pay works. Apps unlock without you really having to think about it.

Spending more than $2,000 on a brand-new iPhone and actually losing Face ID feels like a pretty unusual tradeoff.

Why Would Apple Remove Face ID?

There does appear to be a reason.

Apple is reportedly trying to make the Fold incredibly thin.

When opened, reports have suggested each half of the device could measure somewhere around 4.5 millimeters thick.

That doesn't leave much room.

Apple still has to fit batteries, cameras, speakers, the logic board, two displays, and an entire folding mechanism inside the phone.

The collection of sensors required for Face ID takes up physical space, and apparently that space is becoming difficult to justify in a device this thin.

That explanation makes sense.

It just doesn't necessarily make losing Face ID any easier to accept.

What About MagSafe?

MagSafe was another feature that looked questionable for a while.

Some foldable iPhone dummy units didn't appear to show Apple's normal MagSafe hardware, which raised concerns that Apple could remove the feature completely.

That would've been a much bigger issue for me.

I use MagSafe constantly for charging stands, portable batteries, mounts, and other accessories.

It's one of those technologies that doesn't sound particularly exciting until you've built it into the way you use your phone every day.

Thankfully, more recent reporting suggests MagSafe should still be included.

So for now, I wouldn't put MagSafe on the list of features we're definitely losing.

The Telephoto Camera May Be Gone Too

The Fold is also expected to make a compromise with its camera system.

Current rumors point toward a main camera and an ultra-wide camera, but no dedicated telephoto lens.

For some people, that could be an immediate dealbreaker.

If you regularly use the telephoto camera on an iPhone Pro or Pro Max, buying a substantially more expensive Fold and losing that capability is going to feel strange.

Personally, though, this is the compromise I'd probably accept first.

If I had to choose between losing Face ID, MagSafe, or the telephoto camera, I'd give up telephoto.

And that's where the Fold starts becoming much more interesting, because everybody is going to have a different answer.

The Foldable iPhone Is Going to Be About Tradeoffs

Simply making a list of missing features doesn't really tell us whether Apple's foldable iPhone will be worth buying.

The more important question is whether Apple removes something that actually matters to you — and whether what you get in return is good enough to make you stop caring.

For a long time, it was easy to imagine Apple's Fold as the company's ultimate iPhone.

Take everything from the Pro Max.

Add a folding display.

Charge an absurd amount of money.

Done.

But that's increasingly looking like the wrong way to think about this product.

The Fold may not be Apple's best iPhone at everything.

And if that's true, buyers are going to have to decide which features matter most to them.

Apple's Most Expensive iPhone Could Have Fewer Features

This is where the price makes everything more complicated.

If Apple were building a $700 folding phone, missing features would be relatively easy to explain.

Something has to be removed to hit the price.

But we're potentially talking about a device costing somewhere around $2,000 or more.

At that price, people are naturally going to expect Apple's best technology.

Instead, the Fold could end up without Face ID and without the Pro Max's full camera system.

That sounds pretty bad until you look at the other side of the equation.

What Are We Getting in Return?

When the Fold is closed, it needs to work like an iPhone.

Open it, and suddenly Apple is trying to give you something much closer to a small iPad.

And Apple has to accomplish that without creating a phone that feels like two normal iPhones stacked on top of each other in your pocket.

That's where the physical compromises start making more sense.

There is only so much room inside an incredibly thin folding device.

Something has to give.

Apparently Face ID and the third camera may be two of the things Apple decided it could live without.

The real question is whether we can live without them too.

Does the Fold Actually Let You Do Something New?

This is the same question I've been coming back to with a lot of recent iPhone upgrades.

What does the new phone actually let you do that the phone you already own cannot?

If the Fold gives you an iPhone when you want an iPhone and something closer to an iPad when you need a larger display, that's a real difference.

That's not a slightly faster processor.

It's not another incremental camera improvement.

It's a completely different physical experience.

And maybe that difference is worth giving something else up for.

We won't really know until Apple shows the finished hardware, software experience, camera system, Touch ID implementation, and — most importantly — the actual price.

This Isn't Just an iPhone Pro Max That Folds

I don't think we should go into Apple's foldable iPhone expecting a $2,000 iPhone Pro Max with a hinge attached to it.

Everything we're hearing makes this look increasingly like its own separate category.

That could make all of these compromises understandable.

Or it could make Apple's most expensive iPhone an incredibly difficult sell.

A $2,000 Fold doesn't necessarily need to be better than the Pro Max at everything. But it absolutely needs to give us something the Pro Max cannot.

🍎 Quick Take

Apple's foldable iPhone may not be the "ultimate iPhone" many people expected. If the rumors are accurate, Apple is trading features like Face ID and a telephoto camera for an incredibly thin device that can transform from an iPhone into something closer to a small iPad.

Whether that's worth $2,000 depends entirely on whether the folding experience is useful enough to make those compromises disappear.

Is It ACTUALLY Worth Upgrading Your iPhone This Year?

Apple is about to announce another generation of iPhones, which means millions of people are about to ask themselves the same question they probably asked last year.

Do I actually need a new iPhone?

Maybe you're using an iPhone 13 or iPhone 14. Maybe you have something newer. Maybe your battery isn't quite what it used to be, you're starting to run low on storage, or your camera isn't the newest anymore.

Then September rolls around and Apple shows us something faster, brighter, thinner, more powerful, or supposedly much better.

You look at the new phones.

You check your trade-in value.

And then you look back at the iPhone already in your hand.

The problem is that it still works.

The iPhone Upgrade Question Has Changed

For a long time, upgrading an iPhone was pretty easy to understand.

New generations brought obvious changes like dramatically better displays, LTE, Touch ID, Face ID, larger screens, additional cameras, and OLED technology.

You didn't need to stare at a benchmark chart to understand why the new phone was different.

You could pick it up and immediately see what had changed.

Eventually, though, the iPhone became really good.

Modern iPhones are fast, take excellent photos, have great displays, run nearly every app effortlessly, and can receive software updates for years.

That creates a strange problem for Apple.

How do you convince somebody to replace a phone that's already doing almost everything they need?

Better Doesn't Always Mean Worth Replacing

The newest iPhone is almost always going to be better than the one before it.

Apple can make the processor faster.

The cameras can improve.

The display can get brighter.

Battery life can get better.

Those are all genuinely good upgrades.

But there's an important distinction.

Better and worth replacing are two completely different things.

Instead of focusing on benchmark scores or tiny specification changes, there may be a much easier question to ask:

What can a new iPhone actually do that your current iPhone cannot?

Older iPhones Make the Upgrade Decision Easier

If you're using something like an iPhone 11 or iPhone 12, several generations of improvements have accumulated.

You may be looking at noticeably better battery life, significantly improved cameras, newer displays, faster chips, USB-C, 5G depending on your current model, and features in newer versions of iOS that older hardware may not support.

Those are differences you can actually feel in everyday use.

Your battery lasts longer.

The camera works better at night.

The phone charges differently.

New features become available that weren't possible before.

When several years of improvements pile up at once, an upgrade starts feeling like an upgrade again.

iPhone 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17 Owners Have a Harder Choice

Move forward a few generations and the decision becomes much more complicated.

Take the iPhone 13 Pro.

It already has a 120Hz ProMotion OLED display, multiple cameras, and a processor that remains more than fast enough for almost anything most people do on an iPhone.

You can take great photos, edit video, play games, watch content, use current apps, and do essentially everything expected from a modern smartphone.

The same becomes even more true with the iPhone 14, 15, 16, and 17 generations.

Yes, the newest iPhone will be better. But how much better does it need to be before you spend another $1,000 replacing the one you already own?

When Should You Actually Upgrade Your iPhone?

There are absolutely legitimate reasons to upgrade.

Maybe your battery barely gets through lunch anymore.

Maybe your camera is finally starting to feel limiting.

Maybe you're constantly running out of storage.

Perhaps newer versions of iOS have features your current hardware can't run.

Or maybe your phone is cracked, slow, damaged, or simply becoming frustrating to use.

Those are real reasons to replace a phone.

Don't upgrade because the number changed. Upgrade when the experience changes.

If something about your current iPhone is actively getting in your way, an upgrade can make a meaningful difference.

If it still does everything you need, keeping it another year may make considerably more sense.

The Foldable iPhone Could Change the Equation

Apple's rumored foldable iPhone is interesting in this conversation for one very simple reason.

It does something the iPhone currently in your pocket physically cannot do.

It folds.

When closed, it could function like a compact iPhone.

Open it and you suddenly have something much closer to a small tablet.

Whether that is worth somewhere around $2,000 is an entirely different question.

But unlike another slightly faster processor or another incremental camera improvement, the Fold represents an experience that is obviously different.

You wouldn't need to stare at two spec sheets to figure out what changed.

🍎 Quick Take

The newest iPhone doesn't need to make your current phone obsolete. If your iPhone still works well, remains supported, and does everything you genuinely need, keeping it another year may be the smarter upgrade decision.

Make Apple Convince You

If you own a relatively recent iPhone, there is another way to approach Apple's next launch.

Don't watch the event looking for an excuse to replace your phone.

Make Apple convince you.

Look at the new iPhone and ask what it actually lets you do that the phone in your hand does not.

Not what percentage faster the processor is.

Not how many additional nits of brightness the display produces.

What are you actually going to notice?

If the answer is a dramatically better battery, a capability you genuinely need, a feature your hardware cannot support, or an entirely new form factor you want, upgrading may make sense.

If the answer is mostly that the camera is slightly better and the phone is slightly faster, maybe this isn't your year.

Should You Keep Your iPhone for Another Year?

For a lot of people, the answer may be yes.

If you're coming from an iPhone 11, iPhone 12, or another older model, enough improvements may have accumulated that a new iPhone would feel dramatically different.

If your current phone is giving you problems, there's no reason to keep using something you're unhappy with simply because another model may eventually arrive.

But if you're using a newer iPhone that is still fast, reliable, supported, and doing everything you need, don't assume you have to replace it just because Apple released something newer.

The question isn't whether the new iPhone is better. The question is whether it's better in a way that actually changes something for you.

And that's becoming Apple's biggest challenge.

When you're deciding whether to upgrade, Apple isn't only competing with Samsung or Google.

Apple is competing against the iPhone you already own.

And Apple made that thing pretty good.

So This Is Apple's $2,000 Foldable iPhone

After years of rumors, Apple’s first foldable iPhone is finally starting to come into focus.

And this is shaping up to be a very different kind of iPhone.

Apple is expected to introduce its first foldable model alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, potentially under the iPhone Fold or iPhone Ultra name.

But the name may end up being one of the least interesting things about it.

When you put everything we currently know together, Apple appears to be preparing an iPhone that changes its size, shape, hardware, and even its interface depending on how you use it.

It could also cost somewhere between $2,000 and $2,500.

So what exactly are you getting for that kind of money?

Apple’s Foldable iPhone Is Finally Taking Shape

The first thing most people will probably notice is the shape.

When closed, the outside display is expected to measure somewhere around 5.4 to 5.5 inches.

That is actually pretty small by modern iPhone standards.

Open the device, though, and the screen could expand to roughly 7.8 inches with an almost 4:3 aspect ratio.

The result should be shorter and wider than many of the foldables we have gotten used to seeing from companies like Samsung.

Think of it almost like a digital passport.

Closed, it could feel like a compact iPhone. Open it up and you suddenly have something much closer to a small tablet.

That may ultimately be one of the biggest reasons this form factor makes sense.

You could have a smaller device when you just want to check a message or pull something out of your pocket quickly, then unfold it when you want considerably more screen space.

Apple Is Trying to Make It Ridiculously Thin

The size of the screen is only part of the story.

Apple is also reportedly pushing extremely hard on thickness.

The number that continues to appear in reports is somewhere around 4.5 millimeters when the Fold is open.

For perspective, the iPhone Air is around 5.6 millimeters thick.

That would mean each half of Apple’s folding iPhone could actually be thinner than the iPhone Air.

Obviously, folding the device closed doubles much of that thickness.

But Apple may still end up with a folding phone under roughly a centimeter thick when closed.

Apple is reportedly using a combination of materials including titanium and aluminum to keep the device strong without turning it into a brick.

And on a phone that could cost more than $2,000, durability is going to matter a lot.

Nobody wants an incredibly thin $2,000 phone that bends, breaks, or becomes difficult to protect.

But nobody wants a $2,000 brick in their pocket either.

The Crease Is Still One of the Biggest Questions

If you have ever used a foldable phone, you probably know exactly what the crease is.

It is the visible line or indentation running through the middle of the flexible display where the device folds.

Some people stop noticing it after a while.

Other people never really get used to it.

Apple appears to be putting a huge amount of effort into making that crease considerably less noticeable.

The folding OLED panel is expected to come from Samsung, but reports have pointed toward Apple using a thinner display stack and a redesigned hinge system.

I would not expect magic — the screen still has to physically fold — but Apple may be able to make the crease much harder to see when you are looking directly at the display.

The hinge could be a major part of that.

Apple has reportedly experimented with unusual materials including liquid metal, which is especially good at resisting deformation.

The company has also reportedly put the hinge through extensive durability testing.

Touch ID Could Be Coming Back

One of the strangest changes may have nothing to do with folding the phone.

Touch ID is expected to return.

Instead of Face ID, Apple is reportedly planning to put Touch ID into the side button, similar to what it has done on certain iPads.

And honestly, that is kind of funny.

You could have a completely new folding OLED display, a complicated new hinge, two screens, and a phone that costs more than some MacBooks...

...while Apple brings back an authentication system that many people associate with older iPhones.

The reason appears to come down to space.

Face ID requires a collection of TrueDepth components, and Apple is trying to make each half of this phone incredibly thin.

Moving Touch ID into the side button gives Apple more room to work with inside the device.

The Camera System Has Some Surprising Trade-Offs

The iPhone Fold is expected to have four cameras in total.

Two would be selfie cameras — one associated with each display — while the rear camera system is expected to use two 48-megapixel sensors.

Those rear cameras are expected to cover the main and ultrawide focal lengths.

And yep, that probably means no dedicated telephoto camera.

That would be a pretty surprising compromise on what could become the most expensive iPhone Apple has ever sold.

There has also been a lot of conflicting information about how Apple will handle the front-facing cameras.

At one point, rumors pointed toward an under-display camera.

More recent leaks have suggested some unusual camera placement, potentially including a camera positioned closer to the corner of the display.

That is still one of the areas where the final design remains unclear.

Performance Should Not Be the Problem

Whatever compromises Apple makes elsewhere, performance is not expected to be one of them.

The Fold is expected to use an A20-series chip, around 12GB of RAM, and Apple’s newer C2 cellular modem.

That should give Apple plenty of performance for a device that may need to run much more complex layouts than a normal iPhone.

Battery life may be a more interesting question.

There have been several capacity numbers floating around, so it is probably too early to get attached to one specific figure.

But there are signs Apple may be trying to fit a substantial amount of battery into the Fold.

Clues inside Apple software have also pointed toward something particularly interesting:

Multiple batteries.

That makes sense when you think about the design.

The Fold has two physical halves, which means Apple can place battery cells on both sides and have them work together as one system.

It is one of those details that makes you realize how different the inside of this phone may be from a normal iPhone.

The Biggest Change May Actually Be the Software

Hardware is only half of the problem Apple has to solve.

Think about what happens when you are using the Fold while it is closed.

You open Safari and everything looks like a normal iPhone.

Then you unfold the device and suddenly the screen grows from roughly 5.5 inches to almost 8 inches.

What happens to Safari?

Does everything just become enormous?

That is where Apple’s adaptive software could become extremely important.

Apple has been pushing developers toward interfaces capable of dynamically adjusting to different screen sizes and aspect ratios.

Code inside iOS has also reportedly included references to things such as fold state, hinge angle, multiple built-in displays, and multiple batteries.

An app could look like a normal iPhone app while the Fold is closed, then gain sidebars, additional information, or more iPad-like layouts the moment you open it.

That is a huge change for an operating system that has spent nearly two decades designed around one primary screen shape.

🍎 Quick Take

The most interesting thing about Apple’s Fold may not be the hinge itself. Apple is potentially building an iPhone that can change its physical size and then change its software interface to match.

There Are Still Some Big Questions

For as much as we appear to know about Apple’s foldable iPhone, there are still several unanswered questions.

MagSafe is one of the biggest.

Some reports suggest Apple could keep it.

Other dummy units and leaks have raised questions about whether Apple has enough internal space for traditional MagSafe hardware.

That would be a pretty disappointing omission on such an expensive iPhone, but it remains uncertain.

The Fold is also expected to be eSIM-only, which is not particularly surprising at this point.

Storage rumors have pointed toward 256GB at the low end with configurations potentially reaching 1TB.

Color options may also be limited.

White or silver has appeared repeatedly, while more recent leaks have pointed toward a very dark blue or indigo option.

Then There Is the $2,000 Question

This is probably going to be the most expensive iPhone Apple has ever sold.

Most current estimates put the starting price somewhere in the neighborhood of $2,000 to $2,500 in the United States.

That is a lot of money for any phone.

It becomes even more interesting when you consider some of the compromises Apple may be making.

You could potentially get fewer rear cameras than an iPhone Pro Max.

Touch ID instead of Face ID.

And there is still uncertainty surrounding features such as MagSafe.

There are MacBooks you can buy for considerably less money.

But you are also potentially getting something Apple has never sold before: an iPhone that can completely change its size, shape, and interface depending on what you are doing.

And that is where the Fold starts becoming much more interesting than a simple spec sheet.

This Could Be the Biggest iPhone Reinvention in Years

For almost two decades, the basic idea of an iPhone has stayed surprisingly consistent.

One screen.

One shape.

One interface designed around that shape.

Apple’s first foldable could change all three at once.

A smaller phone when it is closed.

A tablet-sized display when it is open.

Multiple batteries.

A completely new hinge.

Touch ID returning.

A different camera system.

And software capable of responding to the physical state of the device.

That is a pretty major reinvention of something Apple has spent almost 20 years refining.

Now Apple just has to officially show us the final product.

Would You Spend $2,000 on a Foldable iPhone?

That may ultimately be the biggest question.

Apple appears to be putting a huge amount of engineering into making its first folding iPhone feel different from the foldables we have already seen.

But $2,000 or more puts this device into an entirely different category from the normal iPhone.

Some people may see a compact phone that turns into a small tablet and immediately understand the appeal.

Others may look at the price and compromises and decide a normal iPhone still makes considerably more sense.

And I know.

That sounds ridiculous.

These are headphones.

What exactly are we supposed to be doing — taking pictures with our ears?

But that is the part that makes this rumor much more interesting than it sounds at first.

Apple does not appear to be putting cameras in AirPods so you can take photos. It appears to be exploring a way to give Siri a better understanding of what is happening around you.

Recent reports and a leaked Apple demo have pointed toward camera-equipped AirPods working with Visual Intelligence.

The idea is that tiny cameras or visual sensors built into the earbuds could provide information about what you are looking at without requiring you to constantly pull out your iPhone.

And once you think about AirPods that way, the idea starts making considerably more sense.

Apple Does Not Really Want AirPods to Take Pictures

Your iPhone can already use its camera to give Apple’s visual intelligence features context about the world around you.

You can point your phone at a plant and ask what it is.

Look at a restaurant and find more information about it.

Point the camera at an unfamiliar object and ask what you are looking at.

The technology itself is not the unusual part.

The inconvenience is that you still have to take your iPhone out of your pocket, open the camera, point it at something, and then ask the question.

Camera-equipped AirPods could potentially remove that step.

Imagine walking through a city with your AirPods in.

You look at a building and ask Siri what it is.

Instead of asking you to point your iPhone at the building, your AirPods could already be providing the visual information needed to answer the question.

Or imagine standing in your kitchen looking at a collection of ingredients and asking what you could make with them.

The point is not necessarily that these are revolutionary examples.

The point is that Siri becomes much more useful when the device already has context about what you are seeing.

AirPods Could Give Siri Something It Has Never Really Had

Siri has always been able to hear what you say.

But understanding the world around you has traditionally required another device.

Your iPhone provides the camera.

Your Apple Watch provides information from your wrist.

Your AirPods provide audio and increasingly more sensor data.

Adding visual sensors could make AirPods another source of context.

In simple terms, Apple could be trying to give Siri eyes.

That could be useful for directions as well.

Instead of Siri only knowing your GPS position, visual information could potentially help it understand the landmark, storefront, or intersection you are actually looking at.

That does not necessarily mean AirPods would suddenly replace your iPhone.

But they could make certain AI interactions feel much more natural because you would not have to consciously feed the system as much information.

The Accessibility Potential May Be Even More Interesting

Some of the most compelling possibilities have very little to do with convenience.

If AirPods could identify objects, read text, recognize landmarks, or understand other visual information, they could potentially become a useful accessibility tool.

Someone who is blind or has low vision could theoretically receive more information about their surroundings without needing to constantly hold an iPhone camera in front of them.

That kind of experience could make the visual sensors feel much less like a gimmick.

There have also been reports that camera-equipped AirPods could recognize hand gestures.

Instead of reaching up to squeeze an AirPod, some controls could eventually respond to movements made in front of the sensors.

The more sensors Apple puts into AirPods, the less they start looking like simple headphones.

AirPods Have Already Become Much More Than Headphones

The original AirPods were primarily a convenient way to listen to music without wires.

Since then, Apple has continued adding capabilities.

Noise cancellation.

Transparency mode.

Conversation Awareness.

Hearing assistance.

Head gestures.

Each generation has added more awareness of either the person wearing them or the environment around them.

Cameras would introduce an entirely new kind of information.

AirPods could already hear what is happening.

They can detect certain movements.

Now Apple appears to be exploring whether they should also understand what you are looking at.

That is where camera-equipped AirPods start looking less like a headphone upgrade and more like part of Apple’s larger AI strategy.

This is also where the idea becomes uncomfortable.

AirPods with cameras pointed at the world around you sounds very different from AirPods with microphones.

Even if the sensors are not designed to record traditional photos and videos, people around you may not know that.

And that creates an obvious problem for Apple.

How do you make people comfortable around someone wearing earbuds that can see what they see?

Apple is reportedly exploring things like indicator lights that could make it clearer when visual information is being used.

That may help.

But it does not eliminate the larger perception problem.

For a product like this to work, Apple may have to convince people who are not wearing the AirPods just as much as the people who are.

That may turn out to be one of the hardest parts of bringing this idea to market.

When Could Camera-Equipped AirPods Actually Arrive?

There is still considerable uncertainty about timing.

Apple has reportedly explored multiple versions of camera-equipped AirPods.

Some reporting has pointed toward a more advanced version arriving around 2027, while other information suggests another version may be further along than previously expected.

That does not guarantee Apple will release them soon.

Products can change significantly during development, and some never ship at all.

But the appearance of references in Apple software and the reported leaked demo make the concept more interesting than a purely theoretical patent or research project.

Apple appears to be taking the idea seriously.

Could These Become AirPods Ultra?

There is another interesting question surrounding the product.

Would Apple simply make these the next generation of AirPods Pro?

Or would cameras and AI features give Apple an excuse to create an entirely new tier?

There has been speculation about Apple positioning a more advanced model above AirPods Pro under a name such as AirPods Ultra.

And honestly, that would sound very Apple.

Take AirPods Pro.

Add cameras.

Add new AI features.

Charge more money.

Ultra.

Whether Apple actually uses that name remains to be seen, but the possibility says something important about how large this change could eventually become.

Why Apple Really Wants Cameras in AirPods

The strange part about this entire idea is that the cameras themselves may be the least important part.

Apple already has a device with an excellent camera.

Your iPhone.

The problem is that your iPhone spends a significant portion of the day in your pocket.

Your AirPods do not.

They sit on your ears.

They hear what is happening around you.

They are already connected to your iPhone and Apple ecosystem.

And if they can eventually understand what you are looking at as well, they become something fundamentally different.

They become another set of senses for your iPhone.

That may ultimately be what Apple is trying to build.

Not headphones that take pictures.

AirPods that give Siri more context about the world around you.

Would You Wear AirPods With Cameras?

That is the part I am most curious about.

The potential uses are interesting.

The accessibility possibilities could be genuinely useful.

And giving Siri more information without constantly pulling out an iPhone could make Apple’s AI features feel much more natural.

But none of that completely removes the privacy concerns.

Why Would Anyone Want a Foldable iPhone?

For almost twenty years, the iPhone has followed basically the same idea.

One screen.

One piece of glass.

One device small enough to fit in your pocket.

The cameras changed. The displays became larger. The processors became dramatically faster.

But fundamentally, the iPhone never stopped being the same kind of object.

Now Apple appears ready to change that with an iPhone that can unfold into something much larger.

And on the surface, the idea sounds incredible.

A normal iPhone when you want one.

A much larger display when you need more room.

But the more I thought about actually owning one, the more I kept coming back to a surprisingly difficult question.

Why would anyone actually buy a foldable iPhone?

Not why Apple might build one.

Not whether the hinge will be impressive.

Not how visible the crease might be.

Why would you actually spend considerably more money to carry one every day?

A Bigger Screen Sounds Useful

The most obvious reason to buy a foldable iPhone is the display.

Closed, a book-style foldable can behave much like a traditional smartphone.

Open it, and suddenly the device has considerably more room.

Maps can show more of the area around you.

Websites have space to breathe.

Photos become larger.

Games become more immersive.

Documents become easier to read.

Two applications can potentially sit beside each other instead of constantly forcing you to jump back and forth.

There is very little doubt that a larger display can make certain things better.

But that leads directly to the problem.

Useful isn't necessarily the same thing as necessary.

If you're at home and want a larger screen, you may already have an iPad.

If you're working, you may have a Mac.

If you're watching a movie, you probably have a television.

And when you leave those devices behind, part of the appeal of an iPhone is specifically that it disappears into your pocket.

So the real question isn't whether a larger screen is useful.

It's whether that larger screen is useful often enough to justify everything else that comes with it.

The Foldable Industry Already Proved Phones Can Fold

Samsung released the original Galaxy Fold in 2019.

Since then, Google, Motorola, Huawei, Honor, Oppo, and other manufacturers have released their own versions.

And foldable hardware has improved enormously.

The earliest models were thick.

Heavy.

Expensive.

The displays had obvious creases.

The hinges introduced new failure points.

Battery life could suffer.

And the software sometimes felt like someone had simply stretched a phone interface across a tablet-sized display.

Modern foldables are much more refined.

They're becoming thinner.

Lighter.

The hinges are better.

The outside displays feel more normal.

The engineering gap between a foldable and a conventional smartphone continues to shrink.

But proving that a smartphone can fold was never the hardest part.

The industry has already done that.

Apple has to prove something more difficult:

What Foldable Owners Actually Use Them For

If foldable phones really become indispensable, you might expect owners to point toward some incredible feature that normal smartphones simply cannot offer.

But that's not really what happens.

People who love foldables often talk about incredibly ordinary things.

Reading.

Browsing.

Gaming.

Maps.

Photos.

Videos.

Documents.

Multitasking.

In other words, they're doing many of the exact same things they already did on a traditional smartphone.

Those things are simply better when the screen gets larger.

And that sounds almost disappointingly simple until you think about what actually changes.

On a normal iPhone, the physical device never adapts to the task.

Answering a two-word message?

Same rectangle.

Reading a complicated document?

Same rectangle.

Checking the weather?

Same rectangle.

Navigating an unfamiliar city?

Same rectangle.

A foldable changes that relationship.

You can keep it closed when a normal phone-sized display is enough.

Then open it when the screen itself becomes the limitation.

The Appeal May Be Simpler Than It Looks

This is where the foldable idea starts becoming much more interesting.

There does not appear to be one magical application that suddenly makes a foldable essential.

There isn't one feature that instantly makes a traditional smartphone obsolete.

Instead, lots of ordinary experiences improve a little bit.

Maps are better.

Reading is better.

Games are better.

Websites have more room.

Photos are larger.

Multitasking becomes more practical.

Individually, none of those improvements sounds revolutionary.

Collectively, though, they create something a normal phone cannot provide.

A device whose physical experience can change depending on what you're doing.

Most of the time, it can behave like a phone.

And when you need more room, the same device can become something else.

But You Actually Have to Open It

There is one enormous catch to the entire argument.

You actually have to want to use the larger display.

Some people buy foldables and eventually discover that the outside screen is good enough most of the time.

Maybe they open the device for a video.

Or Maps.

Or a document every once in a while.

But if the inner display spends most of the day closed, the entire value proposition becomes harder to defend.

You're carrying a more mechanically complicated device.

You're potentially accepting compromises in weight, durability, cameras, battery life, or thickness.

And you're probably paying considerably more money.

If you barely use the feature that makes the phone different, have you really bought a better phone?

Or have you simply bought a more complicated version of the phone you already owned?

The hardest challenge for Apple's foldable iPhone may not be building an impressive folding display. It may be making that larger display useful enough that owners naturally want to open it throughout the day.

The Foldable's Closest Thing to a Killer Feature

This may also explain something interesting about people who absolutely love foldable phones.

Some owners say that after becoming accustomed to opening their phone whenever they want more space, returning to a traditional smartphone starts to feel surprisingly limiting.

Not because a normal phone suddenly stops working.

It still works perfectly well.

But something that used to feel fixed suddenly feels optional.

You stop consciously thinking about opening the device.

You just do it.

Read something long?

Open it.

Need more room for Maps?

Open it.

Want to compare two things side by side?

Open it.

And eventually, the habit itself may become the feature.

Once that option becomes part of your normal routine, picking up a phone that cannot expand can start to feel like something is missing.

That Doesn't Mean Everyone Will Want One

This is where fascination and mass adoption become two very different things.

Millions of people can be fascinated by a foldable iPhone without ever planning to buy one.

It's possible to want to see Apple's hardware.

To want to see how iOS adapts to a screen that changes shape.

To wonder whether Apple has solved problems existing foldables haven't.

And still decide that a traditional iPhone makes more sense.

The first foldable iPhone may make considerably more sense for a very specific kind of user.

Someone who already loves foldable phones but has been waiting for one inside Apple's ecosystem.

Someone who uses their phone as their primary computer.

Someone who reads, travels, games, works, or multitasks enough that screen size genuinely becomes a daily limitation.

Or someone who simply wants the most radically different iPhone Apple has made in years.

For those people, the equation changes.

So Why Would Anyone Buy a Foldable iPhone?

After looking at how people actually use foldables, I don't think there is one secret feature that suddenly makes the entire category obvious.

And that may be exactly why the appeal can be difficult to explain.

People aren't necessarily interested because the screen bends.

They're interested in what that bending screen allows the device to become.

Sometimes you want something small enough to disappear into your pocket.

Sometimes you want more room.

A foldable gives you the ability to choose without reaching for another device.

Whether that freedom eventually feels indispensable or merely becomes an incredibly expensive option most people rarely use may determine the future of Apple's foldable iPhone.

Because Samsung and the rest of the smartphone industry have already proven that a phone can fold.

Apple does not need to prove that again.

It needs to prove that once people start unfolding an iPhone, they'll ever want to go back.

For nearly a decade, Apple watched an entirely new category of smartphones emerge and chose not to participate.

Samsung folded phones.

Google folded phones.

Huawei folded phones.

One by one, nearly every major smartphone manufacturer experimented with devices that could transform from a traditional phone into something much larger.

Apple did nothing.

Not publicly.

Not commercially.

And for years, that silence was easy to interpret as skepticism.

Maybe foldables were just a trend.

Maybe Apple simply wasn't interested.

Maybe the technology wasn't ready.

But now, after years of standing on the sidelines, Apple appears to be moving toward a foldable iPhone of its own.

That raises a much more interesting question than what the device will look like.

Why now?

If Apple resisted the foldable category for almost a decade, something significant must have changed.

When Smartphones Stopped Feeling New

To understand why a foldable iPhone makes more sense today, it helps to rewind to a time when smartphones were still evolving at an incredible pace.

Early iPhones improved dramatically from one generation to the next.

Displays became sharper.

Battery life improved.

Cameras transformed from an afterthought into one of the most important features on the device.

Processors became dramatically faster.

Every new generation solved obvious problems.

Then the smartphone matured.

Modern processors became faster than most people would ever fully use.

Displays reached a point where they were already excellent.

Camera improvements became increasingly difficult to notice without putting two phones side by side.

Battery technology continued to improve, but slowly.

The smartphone wasn't getting worse. It was becoming mature.

And mature products behave differently.

People no longer felt the same pressure to replace their phones every year or two.

Consumers began keeping smartphones for three, four, and sometimes even five years.

For manufacturers, that created a new challenge.

If the next phone is only slightly better than the one already in someone's pocket, convincing them to upgrade becomes much harder.

While foldable hardware and Android software were changing, Apple's own platforms were evolving in an interesting direction.

Not through a public announcement about foldable phones.

Through products Apple was already shipping.

The iPad gained Stage Manager and resizable windows.

Safari became increasingly capable.

External-display support expanded.

The Files app became more powerful.

SwiftUI encouraged developers to build interfaces that could automatically adapt to different screen sizes.

Then came visionOS, an operating system built around interfaces that can scale, move, and respond to dramatically different environments.

None of these technologies were necessarily built for a foldable iPhone.

But together, they reveal something larger.

Apple's software has become less dependent on one fixed display size.

That matters because a foldable device presents a unique software challenge.

The hardware does not simply have one screen.

It changes shape.

Closed, it may behave like a traditional smartphone.

Open, it becomes something closer to a small tablet.

The interface has to change with it.

That means flexible hardware is only useful when paired with flexible software.

The evidence does not necessarily suggest Apple spent all these years secretly building one specific foldable device.

Geography.

Across much of the world, foldables remained a relatively small segment of the smartphone market.

Demand had already begun to form.

The technology had already been tested.

Apple focused on refining the experience.

Foldables appear to fit the same pattern.

There was no single breakthrough that suddenly made them ready.

Instead, dozens of smaller improvements accumulated over time.

Hinge technology improved.

Displays improved.

Batteries improved.

Processors improved.

Software became more adaptive.

Multitasking became more useful.

Artificial intelligence created new reasons to work with multiple pieces of information at once.

Individually, none of these developments forced Apple to build a foldable iPhone.

People increasingly move between applications, conversations, documents, media, and AI tools throughout the day.

More screen space does not solve every problem.

But it can remove an important limitation.

More information can remain visible at once.

Multiple tasks can coexist.

Applications can adapt around the task rather than forcing the task into one fixed display.

That begins to explain why the idea of a foldable iPhone is more interesting now than it was several years ago.

So Why Is Apple Making a Foldable iPhone?

The simplest explanation may also be the most revealing.

Over nearly a decade, the reasons not to build one have steadily disappeared.

The hardware became better.

The software became more capable.

The category became more established.

Consumers became more familiar with what a foldable was actually for.

Apple's own software became more adaptable.

And the premium smartphone market began accepting form factors that once looked experimental.

This does not mean competition played no role.

It does not mean Apple ignored what Samsung, Huawei, Google, and others were building.

But the larger story appears more gradual than a company suddenly reacting to pressure.

Apple waited while the category evolved.

It watched the compromises become smaller.

It watched customers become more comfortable with the idea.

And its own products gradually moved toward software that could adapt to different kinds of displays.

The foldable iPhone may not represent a sudden change in Apple's strategy. It may represent the moment when that strategy finally becomes visible.

Why I’d Change These iPhone Settings FIRST

Whether you just unboxed a brand-new iPhone, installed a major iOS system update, or simply want a cleaner daily experience, your default settings aren't always optimized for how you actually use your device.

Instead of turning off every single feature until your smartphone becomes a regular "dumbphone," the goal should be optimizing for a better balance of performance, privacy, and day-to-day convenience.

Based on years of using iPhones and Apple products, these are the exact settings I consistently review and recommend changing first to drastically improve your experience.

Better iPhone Defaults

When you boot up an iPhone for the first time, Apple configures it with standard settings designed to appeal to the widest possible audience. However, "broad appeal" rarely means it's tuned for your personal workflows.

Out-of-the-box defaults often leave features turned on that drain battery unnecessarily or leave options off that could make your navigation seamless. By restructuring these fundamental configurations early on, you build a cleaner foundation for your entire interface.

Notifications: Cut the Noise

An unoptimized notification setup is the fastest way to ruin your focus and tank your daily productivity. Apps love to push useless alerts to keep you hooked on the screen, but you have full control over what breaks through.
