This year's SIGGRAPH paper shows the work of a collaboration of Cem Yuksel, Jonathan M. Kaldor, Doug L. James and Steve Marschner.

Their paper describes their way to accurately simulate knitted clothing. Fantastic!

Here some words on the project and some videos, even an implementation in Blender already exists!

guided and monitored by a computer while still preserving the
craftsperson's freedom to sculpt and carve. The computer will intervene
only when the milling bit approaches the planned model. Its interaction
is either by slowing down the spindle speed or by drawing back the
shaft; the rest of the time it allows complete freedom, letting the user
to manipulate and shape the work in any creative way.

The idea
of the FreeD is to allow designers to engage with the physical material
and not just with the CAD environment, and to let them do their
interpretations to the virtual model. By that, designers can create
something that is one of a kind, unique based on a generic design.
After charching the acrylic it passes the 5 million volt electron accelerator, then the acrylic needs to be hit with a hard object. Immediately after the stroke a discharge happen and builds tiny structures of the electrons traveling through acrylic. He can even cover parts with lead masks to control where the effect happens. The Shockfossils are then mounted on a wooden holder and lit by LED's, a commercial product...

I think this marks a huge point showing the influence of 3D-Printing and CNC manufacturing in our times. We will see a lot more 3D-printing going on at home, new wars on copyright (Lego's patent just ran out...). People can now construct, share, modify and build their objects of desire, furniture, art, jewelery and thiefs may print their own ATM-skimmer devices...A lot to think about before it hits us full throttle. Bring it on!

Here a quote of the original announcement in their Blog:

Evolution: New category.

We're always trying to foresee the future a bit here at TPB. One of
the things that we really know is that we as a society will always
share. Digital communication has made that a lot easier and will
continue to do so. And after the internets evolutionized data to go from
analog to digital, it's time for the next step.
Today most data is born digitally. It's not about the transition from
analog to digital anymore. We don't talk about how to rip anything
without losing quality since we make perfect 1 to 1 digital copies of
things. Music, movies, books, all come from the digital sphere. But
we're physical people and we need objects to touch sometimes as well!
We believe that the next step in copying will be made from digital
form into physical form. It will be physical objects. Or as we decided
to call them: Physibles. Data objects that are able (and feasible) to become physical. We believe that things like three dimensional printers, scanners
and such are just the first step. We believe that in the nearby future
you will print your spare sparts for your vehicles. You will download
your sneakers within 20 years.
The benefit to society is huge. No more shipping huge amount of
products around the world. No more shipping the broken products back. No
more child labour. We'll be able to print food for hungry people. We'll
be able to share not only a recipe, but the full meal. We'll be able to
actually copy that floppy, if we needed one.
We believe that the future of sharing is about physible data. We're
thinking of temporarily renaming ourselves to The Product Bay - but we
had no graphical artist around to make a logo. In the future, we'll
download one.

BFB presents its new 3D printer, the RapMan 3.2 at EuroMold 2011 in Frankfurt, Germany. I'll be there next week to get a glimpse of state of the art 3D printing and machining for product design and form building.

Here a quote from the Bits From Bytes Blog

We’ve given the Rapman a bit of a makeover and
can now reveal
the latest addition to the RapMan family. It uses a brand new touchscreen user interface and for the first time uses
a USB
memory stick file transfer, meaning
there is no need for additional SD cards anymore. Constructing the RapMan 3.2
has been made simpler too, as it is now entirely solder-free. All in all, we
think it’s simpler to operate than ever before.

Starting at £795, it is still one of the most affordable 3D printers on the
market and still has low running costs,
and relatively fast production time allows more freedom to experiment with your
designs .

The
Rapman 3.2 will be launched officially to the public at the EuroMold show in
Frankfurt, Germany on November 29 - 2 December 2011, where visitors will see it
in action and it will be available to buy (while stocks last). If you are
attending the show, be sure to come and see us in Hall 11, stand F110.

The RapMan 3.2 3D printer is available now from
our website.

MakerBot Open Source toys

MakerBot just released some nice open source toys for 3D printing enjoyment.

You are invited to participate in a design competition for development of sustainable technologies and their components for printing on open source 3-D printers.
The goal of the contest is to facilitate an open exchange of 3-D
sustainable technology designs that can be printed to meet various needs
in the context of sustainable and self directed development. 3-D
printers such as RepRap
and open sourced innovation hold great promise for development of
appropriate technologies to help millions of world's poorest communities
reach a better standard of living. Designs will be judged on the
technical printing viability, feasibility and functionality of the
innovation, as well as sustainability from ecological, economic and
social perspectives.

Anyone can enter the competition but the contestants must post their digital designs on Thingiverse under an open license (e.g. CC-BY-SA).
The contest is funded by the Queen's Applied Sustainability Group and
the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).

Autodesk 123D Catch: Take photos of your favorite people, places and things and let the power
of the cloud magically transform them into detailed 3D models. 123D Catch is free beta software.

123D Catch will be immediately familiar to anyone who has used Project Photofly,
the developer’s cloud-based photogrammetry system, released as a
technology preview via Autodesk Labs earlier this year – simply because
123 Catch is Photofly, given a new name and wider release.
way. The Autodesk® 123D™ Make Technology Preview turns any 3D model
into a pattern of flat parts that can be cut and assembled into an
artful creation. The Autodesk® 123D™ Make Technology Preview is
currently available only for Mac OS X. The preview software will expire
on 2/28/12.

Nearly every few months new 123D apps are being pushed out for Windows, OSX and iOS devices.
The newest additions are interesting because of the wide distibution they will make, now after the first 123D products have been launched, a bigger userbase will get attention to the new products.

PRESS RELEASE (Excerpts)
Autodesk, Inc. has introduced two exciting offerings in the company’s
emerging Autodesk 123D family — Autodesk 123D Catch and Autodesk 123D
Make Technology Preview. The offerings enable anyone to quickly and
easily capture 3D models from the world around them, and additionally
turn 3D models into their own artistic creations. The new technology is
further proof that Autodesk is continuing to push boundaries in personal
manufacturing, empowering more people to imagine and create things, and
share them with others whether for fun, learning or profit.
The Autodesk 123D Catch application — previously codenamed Project
Photofly on Autodesk Labs — is a new, public beta release that uses the
power of cloud computing to quickly transform digital photos into
photorealistic 3D models. Anyone capable of using a point-and-shoot,
mobile phone or advanced digital SLR cameras to snap a series of photos
of objects, people or scenes can use 123D Catch to generate impressive
3D models. Capturing your own personal avatar or favorite vacation
scenes in 3D is now both possible and easy. The app also has built-in
sharing capabilities with short movies or animations for viewing on
mobile devices, YouTube and other social media channels.
Autodesk 123D Make application is a also a new, free* technology
preview for the Mac, capable of converting digital 3D models into 2D cut
patterns that can be easily assembled in low-cost materials, such as
cardboard, wood, fabric, metal or plastic. The cut pieces come together
to create a physical representation of the original digital model.
123D Make enables users to create art, furniture, sculptures or other
quick prototypes in order to test how a design will look in real life.
Autodesk developed this technology to act as a digital engineer capable
of helping individuals create 3D models and, eventually, transform the
models into the real thing. 123D Make is designed for creative
self-expression or for users that perhaps can’t find what they’re
looking for in mass-produced items and decide to make it on their own.
The Autodesk 123D family also includes the Autodesk 123D desktop
application, enabling makers to bring ideas to life by designing highly
precise and makeable objects. The Autodesk 123D Sculpt free* app is for
sculpting and painting 3D creations on the iPad. Inventors, tinkerers,
artists, entrepreneurs, and arts and crafts enthusiasts can use the
Autodesk 123D portfolio on a variety of platforms and devices, with
access to content, Autodesk fabrication partners and social connections
at a single destination.
*Free products are subject to the terms and conditions of the
end-user license and services agreement that accompanies the software.
It can jump and crawl with sophiosticated hydraulics like a real spider. The Body contains a control unit and multiple sensors. Its purpose is "an exploratory tool in environments that are too hazardous for humans."

The special aspect of this high-tech helper: not only very light, it
also combines rigid and elastic shapes in a single component; with just a
few production steps, it can also be produced at low cost. To date,
designs such as the mobile robot have been generated using conventional
mechanical-engineering technologies – a time-consuming and costly
undertaking. Researchers at IPA, on the other hand, rely on generative
production technologies, and specifically on selective laser sintering
(SLS) of plastics, a 3-D printing process. In this process, step by step
thin layers of a fine polyamide powder are applied one at a time and
melted in place with the aid of a laser beam. This way, complex
geometries, inner structures and lightweight components can be produced –
with structures optimized much as if produced by Nature herself. The
experts at IPA have a great deal of latitude in the design of their
mobile robot; the leg modules, for instance, can be designed with
infinitely variable load-bearing characteristics.
“We can use SLS to produce one or even several legs in a single
operation; this minimizes assembly effort, saves materials and reduces
the time it takes to build a robot. With the modular approach,
individual parts can be quickly swapped as well. Our robot is so cheap
to produce that it can be discarded after being used just once – like a
disposable rubber glove,“ Becker points out. A prototype of the robot
can be seen at the EuroMold 2011 trade fair in Frankfurt, at the joint
stand of the Fraunhofer-Gemeinschaft (Hall 11, Stand C66), from November

At raplab I work in a field that comes natural with my interest in 3D; 3D prototyping, milling, lasercutting, vacuum pressing and whatnot... I help architecture students to transform their ideas in to reality (physical models). Expect to see a lot of information on this topic as well in this blog. Combined with my 3D software experience I think I have to pay attention not to become a mad scientist, hmmmuahahaaa

For 3 days in the week I work in Zürich and the rest of the week is still reserved for my work at mediagenerator. This involves slight changes in business, now you reach me best by e-mail and mobile phone, I report back quickly as you are already accustomed from me.
Rock on!

Now Microsoft released the (noncommercial!) Kinect SDK for Windows Beta version.

It runs under Windows 7 and Microsoft has not commented on the compatibility for the upcoming Windows 8.

Microsoft stated that in early 2012, the Kinect SDK can be used by any company to create commercial applications for Windows. There are already 200 companies (Razorfish, Toyota..) involved as part of a pilot program.

The Kinect for Windows SDK beta includes drivers, rich APIs for raw
sensor streams and human motion tracking, installation documents, and
resource materials. It provides Kinect capabilities to developers who
build applications with C++, C#, or Visual Basic by using Microsoft
Visual Studio 2010.

This SDK includes the following features:

Raw sensor streams

Access to raw data streams from
the depth sensor, color camera sensor, and four-element microphone array
enables developers to build upon the low-level streams that are
generated by the Kinect sensor.

Skeletal tracking

The capability to track the
skeleton image of one or two people moving within the Kinect field of
view make it easy to create gesture-driven applications.

Advanced audio capabilities

Audio processing
capabilities include sophisticated acoustic noise suppression and echo
cancellation, beam formation to identify the current sound source, and
integration with the Windows speech recognition API.

Sample code and documentation

The SDK includes more
than 100 pages of technical documentation. In addition to built-in help
files, the documentation includes detailed walkthroughs for most samples
provided with the SDK.

Easy installation

The SDK installs quickly, requires
no complex configuration, and the complete installer size is less than
100 MB. Developers can get up and running in just a few minutes with a
standard standalone Kinect sensor unit (widely available at retail
outlets).

This SDK is designed for non-commercial purposes only; a commercial version is expected to be available at a later date.

Hello Sculpting friends.

Today Sculpting restarts, with a new team.
For now in Beta status.
This is unfortunately necessary, because we could only aquire the forum
uncomplete, a previous conversion of the forum software causes a complete
image loss, the same problem happens with your avatars.
Thats why we restart nearly from scratch.
But there is also a positiv effect.
The forum is completely cleaned and in its original condition, ecxept the
pictures.
We have changed many things. But take a look by yourself. www.sculpting.de

Please read the announcements at the beginning.

Hallo Sculpting Freunde.

Euer Sculpting Admin Team

Gruß Seeda.

They call it 3D milling, ok, it's legit but just a fancy new word for a 3 axis mill. I have seen other articles calling this mill a 3D printer...

I really like the concept of having a small desktop mill to rapid prototype small objects or to have kids playing and learning with the mill. The pricing is set to around $1000, i don't know any similar mill in this price range.

Get some more information on the Roland Website

Here the feature list:

Precisely mills 3D shapes, patterns and designs out of foam, wax, balsa wood and plastic

iModela Creator, Roland’s 3D design software, is included, allowing users to accurately mill shapes, holes, textures and patterns right out of the box

Affordable, easy-to-use platform for exploring creativity

Easy to setup and operate, with just a power switch, simple LED display and external control panel for adjusting computer settings

Compact, desktop device stores in a dedicated carrying case and travels easily

A specially designed spindle motor unit supports a variety of milling tools commonly available at model shops and do-it-yourself (DIY) retailers

iModela artists can share projects and learn from others around the world by joining an online community

Compared to what Glue Isobar and Igloo did for Toyota, producing building projections is a piece of cake.

Using cutting edge 3D-projection technique they projected animations on a real car using 7 projectors, a very detailed 3D-car model, a lot of tea and brainwork. Kudos!
Not that the idea is new but the execution is flawless.

Wacom's new product the "Inkling" does not need special paper or ink to take track of your sketching/writing, it uses a little box and a pen containing a standard 1mm ballpoint reservoir that communicates via infra-red and ultrasonic transmission data.

The Inkling accepts any paper in sizes from A7 to A4 and gives you also 1024 levels of pressure sensitivity. One other great feature is the capability of creating layers on the fly. Imagine designing a car, while sketching you can create a new virtual layer for wheels, body and what not...

We do a lot of sketching to keep ideas and concepts, then we decide to throw stuff out or develop further on specific drawings. The Inkling gives us the possibility to store our work, review it in the Inkling management software then output it as raster or vector data to work on it in Photoshop/Illustrator/Autodesk Sketchbook...there you can use the vector data to refine your work. You even can play back your sketch in a timeline and select a new starting point of your sketch, Wow!

For a price of around 160 Euros it's a no brainer. Inkling will be released mid September.
Key features

Enhance your professional workflow by capturing digital data while sketching with a ball-pen on normal paper

The ink sketch can be structured in layers while drawing – no need to recreate layers in software

1,024 levels of pressure sensitivity for natural pen strokes

Store hundreds of high resolution sketches on the receiver before transferring to your PC or Mac

Save time and export your sketches with layers directly into Adobe® Photoshop® or Illustrator® (CS3 or higher), or Autodesk® SketchBook® Pro or SketchBook® Designer (2011 or higher) as vector graphics

Be versatile by saving your sketches in the following formats: JPG, BMP, TIFF, PNG, SVG and PDF

Here some Websites to dig in deeper:
With this Blender Addon it is possible to make good use of freehand curves that you can turn into a surface with options for the divisions you want to have.

But see for yourself:

Since it was a bit of trouble finding out which drivers and libraries to use on Windows I had to fresh up my brain and tried the Kinect with Motionbuilder.

I used Jasper Brekelmans fantastic Brekel Kinect as device in Motionbuilder. Of course I had other drivers installed (Freenect) that I had to get rid off first, after that everything went very straightforward. Here a quick'n dirty video I made after a half hour of dancing and playing around:

First you calibrate the Kinect in Brekel Kinect so that it recognizes your skeleton, then you open Motionbuilder, add the Brekel Device, add a character, connect them and push record in Live mode, done.

You can filter the motion in Motionbuilder and take care of the FCurves to minimize jittering.

You won't get professional quality out of it but I think it has got its applications. For example you can make "quickpose" records that you can use as base in your animations.

I am planing a second part of the Ameisia short and will use some Kinect mocap for some spaceship scenes where the character sits. Maybe also for more...anyway it is fun to play around.
