As told by Miami Based Travel Photographer Daniel Korzeniewski

I just received with great joy and honor excellent news. One of the portrait photos made during my last tour in Cuba was a finalist in the prestigious Kuala Lumpur International PhotoAwards 2020.

According to their own words, The Kuala Lumpur International Photoawards, is an annual global portrait photography prize seeking the very best and fresh entries from photographers of all levels in two main categories – Single Image open and a Project-based or themed category. Initiated in 2009, KLPA is recognized as a significant and vital award in the photography calendar, supporting and rewarding contemporary portraiture practice, especially in the South East Asian region.

If you know me, you also know that portraits are among the most appealing genres amidst the great variety of subjects in travel photography. Particularly when it can be done in a way that dignifies people and connects with the culture of the place I am visiting.

I entered the awards in the single image category, the awarded photo ranked in the top 40 finalists between over 1200 entries. The finalists’ exhibition is planned between September 12 and October 18, 2020, the ILHAM Gallery in Kuala Lumpur.

Cuban Ballerina was photographed in Havana, Cuba, in January of 2020.

Dance is one of the most recognized cultural heritages in Cuba. Worldwide recognized for its music, salsa and rumba are always among the first things people associate with the Caribbean nation. However, Cuba is also acknowledged as one of the main spotlights for the world’s best ballet dancers.

Environmental portraits are always an essential part of documenting a place, its people, and its culture. The iconic Ballerina Alicia Alonso created the Ballet Nacional de Cuba in 1948, becoming what is today amongst the most prominent dance companies in the world and part of Cuba’s culture.

The goal of this portrait was to connect dance and the distinct architecture of Havana. A place that endured two independence wars, a revolution, a United States embargo, and over fifty years of neglect, Havana is complex to conjecture, and yet captivating.

The most traditional buildings in Havana are found in the area known as “La Habana Vieja,” Old Havana. That’s the place I headed to create this portrait. There are many similar hallways and entrances in different levels of disrepairs around the streets of Old Havana, but this one in particular, had all the necessary elements to convey the sense of place. Beyond the typical entryway, the need for repairs, this entrance also features a graffiti with the Cuban flag and small inscription to the side that reads, “El arte, un arma de la revolución;” The art, one the arms of the revolution.

The ballerina is Ana Martha Zamora Echazabal; she is a humble and fantastic person and a member of the Cuban National Ballet Company. We roamed through Havana, making photos in different scenarios, but the one in this particular building and her pose is my favorite, representing Cuba and its love for ballet. She seems to be effortlessly floating in the air, with the arms leading the view to the Cuban flag with a slight sense of motion.

This photograph was taken with the Fuji X-T3, and the lens is the Fuji XF16-55 mm 2.8, ISO 1250, Aperture 2.8 Shutter Speed 1/60 sec. There is also a flash Godox V1 helping to fill light on her camera right with a dome diffuser.

That’s all for now; for prints and licensing information, just click here.

But Peru is much more than Machu Picchu. Peru is diverse. Few nations in the world are as exciting; with stories at every turn, dramatic Andean landscapes, and a unique mix of Hispanic and native traditions, Peru is just fascinating.

I have written long posts about my past visits and photography experiences in the country. So this time, I just want to showcase some of the images made during my last Peru photo tour. I was co-leading this tour with Darlene Hildebrandt of Digital Photo Mentor (DPM), and we had along with us ten fantastic guests; we indeed had a blast.

Our 14-day journey started in Lima; then, we visited Arequipa, the Colca Canyon, Cusco, the Sacred Valley, and of course, Machu Picchu. Some of us also adventured with a five-day visit to the Amazon Jungle.

Architecture, cityscapes, landscapes, street and people are just some of the genres you can photograph in Peru. Here is a gallery with some of my most beloved images from the trip. I recommend you click on them, so you can see a full resolution image.

Peru is the place that lives up to every expectation every time I go back. The photographic opportunities are endless, and I always return with a feeling of accomplishment.

If you love travel photography, and you have never been there, Peru should be on your radar. Imagine a place of wonders with so many opportunities in a safe atmosphere. I always recommend Peru to friends and people who want to start or try travel photography. Oh, and if you’re not aware yet, Peru is also a leading culinary destination. What else can you ask for?

My gear of choice for this tour was Fujifilm GFX. I brought the GFX 50S and 50R bodies with me, along with three lenses: the GF 32-64mm, the GF 23mm, and the GF 100-200mm. I also had my Godox lighting kit, which was mostly used for lighting the portraits of the natives made in the Amazon jungle.

I will be back in Peru next year for more photography and adventures, and you could travel with me. I’ll be leading a new Peru photo tour in 2021 in July; registration is already open, and you can find all the details here.

All the images in this post are available for licensing and prints; if you’re interested, <a href="https://dk.photoshelter.com/gallery/Peru-Landscape-and-People/G0000phlHvrn_bnI" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="just click this link.

As told by Miami Based Travel Photographer Daniel Korzeniewski

One of the world’s oldest inhabited cities, the holiest of the seven sacred cities in Hinduism and Jainism, this is Varanasi, “the city of lights.” There is no doubt that this is a vivid and captivating place. To me, it’s probably the most fascinating region I’ve ever been to and photographed.

This is a continuation of my prior post, basically a recap of last’s year India photo tour. I co-led this trip for Digital Photo Mentor, and you can see the previous post here. This was my second time in Varanasi; the pictures of when I first visited and how I felt are in this post. It honestly didn’t change much the second time around. The way I observed things were different, but what I experienced was similar to my first visit, so it’s still a good read for someone who wants to know more about how it is and what to expect in Varanasi.

This time around, my trip coincided with the Dev Deepavali, a truly fantastic celebration. During the five days it lasts, hundreds of thousands of pilgrims flock to Varanasi to worship on the Ganges River. It’s known as the “Festival of Lights,” and the steps of the ghats on the Ganges are lit with more than a million earthen lamps. Strolling the ghats during the festival was just a breathtaking sight.

The Sadhus

Varanasi is famous for many things: Sadhus, Aghoris, and Hinduism are undoubtedly some of them. The spirit of these people has always intrigued me, so I wanted to have an opportunity to photograph and do some portraits with some of them without being rushed. With that in mind and knowing I also wanted to have more access to locals, I hired a local fixer. The following portraits were made during an early morning on the Ganges. For the most part, I made those photos with a combination of available light and strobes, mainly used as fill.

The fishing village

Also, there is more to see beyond Varanasi and the main sights. Not far from the hustle and bustle, the peaceful villages around are worth checking out. I invariably enjoy exploring further, away from the tourists and landmarks. I always find interesting subjects to document and photograph. The following are some photos of a nearby fishing village. It was a fabulous morning; the people and families were very welcoming and allowed us to create some lovely images.

Wandering in Varanasi

I wandered the city, visiting temples and akharas while making photos along the way. There are many possibilities, but most of the activities are around the Ganges. You can mostly walk up and down the river people-watching all day, but I’d say the best time is always very early morning (pre-dawn) and after sunset. During that time, the majority of the people are going out with their daily routines, taking dips in the river, and so on. It’s hard to wake up every day at dawn, especially for those who are not used to it, but besides the people, you also get the bonus of fabulous light. Keeping all this in mind, if you plan to visit, it’s best to choose accommodations close to the Ganges.

Needless to say, I enjoyed it all. But walking the ghats at night inside a sea of people chanting, worshiping, and lighting candles and firecrackers is an experience I will never forget.

Varanasi never disappoints, I ticked off from my list some of the images I’d wanted to make since my first visit. But there is more to explore and more people to meet, and I can’t wait to go back. That will be soon, as I head to India to lead another photo tour this coming November 2019. Varanasi will be part of that trip as an extension, and if you want, you can join me. It’s a small group; we’ll have fun, learn photography, and make incredible memories if you are up to it. Click here to see all the details.

Most of the photos from this post were taken with the medium-format Fujifilm GFX50s and some with the Fujifilm X-T3. Both are my go-to cameras for travel. For strobes, I run with Godox with several modifiers.

As told by Miami Based Travel Photographer Daniel Korzeniewski

I came across this reserve while scouting for new locations in Vietnam earlier this year. I was between tours. I had about five days in Hanoi when I finished co-leading the Digital Photo Mentor Vietnam tour before heading to Casablanca in Morocco.

Ninh Binh was an area in central Vietnam where I’d never been before. I knew there were some beautiful landscapes there. The idea of a day trip to explore resonated more and more when I was planning what to do during the downtime. I could’ve just rested and waited for Morocco, but that’s not me. Then a local operator offered me to take me there with one of their local guides, and I couldn’t resist.

It was a long day, but worth it despite the weather conditions. We departed Hanoi very early. The weather was not cooperating as it was raining from very early, but we pushed forward. You never know what conditions you’ll get, and sometimes adverse weather can also yield fantastic photos.

The Van Long Reserve in Ninh Binh was our first planned stop. We arrived there about two hours after we left Hanoi. The rain was easing up but still persistent. You know, those steadfast little drops that bother enough to complicate things. But there we were. The jetty is not far from the parking, so we walked there. The wooden boats are used by locals but also for tourists to wander around the reserve. At that time of the day and with these weather conditions, the place was empty.

The scene was astounding: a mountain range, water, old classic boats … what else can you ask for, right? I tried several compositions, but none of them worked for me. The rain made it worse, and it was frustrating. But walking around to find a shot that worked, just a few hundred meters away, I found some form of shelter. There it was—a small, covered structure close to the edge of the water where I was able to put away the gear, set up the tripod, and concentrate on the photo. I swapped the lens, mounted a wide-angle, and a couple of minutes later I made this photo.

The light was almost flat, but the clouds in the sky were moving fast, so I wanted to capture the movement. Because of the rain, there was a lot of reflection bouncing from the boats but the colors were popping.

The photo was made with the Fujifilm GFX50s mounted on a tripod, and the lens was the Fujinon GF 23mm F/4 R LM WR. On this format, the focal length of this lens is equivalent to 18mm in terms of full-frame cameras. I also used a set of NiSi filters. First I added a NiSi 2 Stop Medium Graduated ND to darken the sky. I also added a 3 Stop ND to get a long enough exposure to get some movement on the clouds and smooth the water. Lastly, I also added the circular polarizer to help eliminate reflections and get more contrast. Post-processing was entirely done in Lightroom.

That’s all for now. If you’d like to buy a print of this image or for licensing information, click here. As always, feel free to comment, and if you like my content, you can help me by sharing this post on your social channels.

As told by Miami Based Travel Photographer Daniel Korzeniewski

I just finished processing most of the photos from the past India Photo Tour. It took some time, but invariably, my post-processing falls behind. Between trips, planning tours, and everyday errands, working on the images always seems to be pushed back.

Nevertheless, now, with everything finished, I just wanted to share some of the photos that are more appealing to me. It’s just a set of 40 photographs made during the tour. I decided not to comment or do a story because most of these have already been shared and documented from previous trips to North India, and my sentiments are the same. You can see the prior posts here.

The photos are from Delhi, Agra, Dechu, Jodhpur, Jaipur, and Pushkar. Basically, it’s a collection of my favorite images from the tour I co-led for Digital Photo Mentor. I am leaving out Varanasi, which I did as an extension and I will share on a separate post. There is a caption for every photo, so you know where it was made and what it concerns.

I said I was not going to write a story, but I do love India. It’s an excellent place for photography and the people are very welcoming. It is probably the best country to practice “people photography” if you are shy when approaching subjects. So here are the images, and if you like what you see, don’t forget to comment.

It certainly was a fantastic trip, and I can’t wait to go back. My next photo tour and trip to India will be this coming October of 2019. Once again, I’ll be leading a small group. If you are interested, there is still time to join me. Check out the details here.

Lastly, most of the photos for this trip were made with the Fuji GFX 50s. I also had with me the X-T3, which I mainly used when I needed a long reach and in some of the portraits.

That’s all for now. Hope you enjoyed the photographs. For licensing information and prints, click here.

As told by Miami Based Travel Photographer Daniel Korzeniewski

I started very early this morning; it was dark when we began to hike. The goal was to reach a location for a sunrise that was about five kilometers uphill from the beginning of the trail. We made it on time, got the shot and kept on going. A couple of kilometers farther the path got more extensive, and we reached an area of plains where the peaks in front revealed themselves in a magical way.

There it was, the Fitz Roy in all its glory. It felt unbelievably close, almost as if I could touch it. I am here with two friends, also photographers, and this is the Los Glaciares National Park, in Patagonia.

At that moment, for the second time on this trip, I had tears in my eyes. As a travel photographer, I’ve had the opportunity to see and photograph many places. However, I’ve never felt such an unbelievably soulful connection in any other part of the world. Patagonia had been on my bucket list for a long time; I always dreamed of coming here, but for one reason or another something always got in the way. Perhaps that was the reason for such an emotional reaction—that, the undeniable raw beauty of this part of the world just got me astonished.

We spent about two weeks making photos in Patagonia. We roamed around between Argentina and Chile chasing landscapes, sunrises, sunsets, and exploring. It was a fantastic trip and here are some favorite locations and pictures.

Torres del Paine National Park, Chile

Torres del Paine was the first place we visited. Torres del Paine is probably one of the most important national parks in Chile. The area is vast, and the opportunities for photography are top-notch.

While most visitors come to see what <g class="gr_ gr_15 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Grammar multiReplace" id="15" data-gr-id="15">are</g> considered some of the most spectacular granite formations on the planet, there is more than that. Apart from the ragged spires of the Cordillera del Paine, there are glaciers, lakes, valleys, and rivers. The Paine massif commands the scenery; the vividly colored lakes and the Patagonian steppe are just the alluring whole.

Puerto Natales is the closest town to the park, and we traveled from there on different days during the stay. Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate; we had gale-force gusts during the first portion that made it almost impossible to stand outside the car, followed by rain. It got better the last couple of nights, and with that, we were able to access some areas to photograph in good light.

Patagonia is just like that: the weather changes and it is not predictable, but for me, it is part of the charm.

Glacier Perito Moreno, El Calafate, Argentina

From Puerto Natales, we traveled to El Calafate in Argentina. This is a lovely town that hosts great restaurants, accommodations and also one of the major commercial airports in the area. But the main reason to be here is the Perito Moreno Glacier. Located just 48 miles from El Calafate, the glacier is <g class="gr_ gr_13 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Grammar only-ins replaceWithoutSep" id="13" data-gr-id="13">one</g> the most important tourist attractions in Argentina. The Perito Moreno is part of the Los Glaciares National Park and one of the 48 glaciers fed by the Southern Patagonian Ice Field located in the Andes region system shared with Chile.

This glacier is just massive; the ice formation encompasses about 97 square miles, and its walls rise over 240 feet above the surface of Argentino Lake. I spent a morning strolling the walkways, taking photos and just watching the impressive scenery. Observing and trying to catch a rupture is also a classic. I experienced several small ones; the sound of the ice breaking is just astounding and something to remember. I wish I had witnessed and photographed a large one, but there is always the next time.

Puerto Rio Tranquilo, Chile

The journey continued north and back to Chile. We drove around 900 kilometers to see the Marble Caves in Lake General Carrera<g class="gr_ gr_11 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Style replaceWithoutSep" id="11" data-gr-id="11">.</g>

<g class="gr_ gr_11 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Style replaceWithoutSep" id="11" data-gr-id="11">Puerto</g> Rio Tranquilo was far from the area of Los Glaciares National Park but was high on the bucket list of one of the friends I was traveling with. Puerto Rio Tranquilo is a quiet outpost on the shore of the lake that is home to the famous caves. I can attest that seeing the area and caves was worth the journey to reach them. The results of centuries of erosion by the lake into the rock are unusual. The caves are colorful; the morning light and reflections bouncing from the water helps to create vibrant patterns and textures. The caves are only accessible by boat; we had two outings to maximize the photo opportunities under different conditions.

Besides the marble hollows, the landscape and vistas of the surroundings are also very compelling.

Los Glaciares National Park, El Chalten, Argentina

El Chalten is a small mountain village located on the riverside of Rio de las Vueltas in Santa Cruz Province. El Chalten is also known as Argentina’s Trekking Capital, mainly for being a popular base from which to hike the numerous trails around this section of the national park.

The gems here are the Cerro Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre. The peaks are uncommonly unique in shape and can be seen from different places. But besides the favorite trails, other sights are Torre Glacier, Laguna Capri, Piedras Blancas Glacier, Chorrillo del Salto, and Laguna De Los Tres.

Naturally, this is where we experienced more trekking and hard paths to access good photo locations.

Making photos in Patagonia can be challenging. It really depends how deep you want to go or do. Some of the locations are easy to access, but other ones require long and uphill hiking trails and some commitment. Let me tell you, beyond the photograph, experiencing a sunrise in places like this is difficult to describe with words, but the reward surpasses the effort by a long shot.

Patagonia enchanted me, and now it ranks among the best landscape places I’ve ever been to. I’ll be back next year in April, and you could join me. The 2021 Patagonia Photo Tour will be incredible; I am expecting to announce it early 2020. At this time I am finishing up the itinerary and pricing; this will be a small group. If you want to join me, I strongly recommend that you join the waiting list here.

Lastly, most of the photos for this trip were made with the Fuji GFX 50s. I also had with me the X-T3, which I mainly used when I needed a long reach. My NiSi set of grads and ND filters were also heavily used, along with a sturdy tripod.

That’s all for now. Hope you enjoyed the photographs of Patagonia. As always, feel free to comment. <a href="https://dk.photoshelter.com/gallery/Photographing-in-Patagonia/G0000N1bES7vtghE" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="For licensing information or to purchase prints of the photos, click here.
Heho, Mandalay, Tachileik. Three stops on a small propeller plane is what it takes to reach Kyaing Tong from Yangon. There is no direct service from the capital, and people move in and out of the aircraft at every landing. The legs are short in time, but in the end, it takes almost the whole day to get there.

Photographing and documenting disappearing cultures is one of the matters that draw me to travel and explore the world. Myanmar is one of the places undergoing rapid change, particularly Yangon, which has some of the more prominent centers and sightseeing areas. However, some of the more remote regions remain unchanged and it is still possible to experience local life like it was hundreds of years ago.

That’s essentially what brought me to Kyaing Tong, a small town in the Shan State, close to the border with China and Laos. The remote area – not long ago closed to visitors – is dotted with hamlets of ethnic groups within the surrounding mountains. With a little bit of trekking, is easy to get access to many of the minorities. Villages of Akha, Eng, Lahu, Shan and Wa families can be reached from the town almost moving in any direction.

It was late afternoon when we arrived after that jittery flight. Consequently, there was not much room for wandering but we still managed to visit the Wat Jong Kham Monastery where I had the opportunity to photograph young monks.

Kyang Tong itself is a pleasant little center. There are many ways to spell this name, and I have seen it as Kengtung, Kyaingtong, Chiang Tung, Cheingtung, and Kengtong. The town lies around an attractive lake circled by local restaurants serving traditional Shan food in a genuinely exotic atmosphere.

There is also a very compelling morning market where I bought some supplies and medicines. Later on, I distributed them among the villagers. The market is vivid and colorful; it starts at dawn and by about mid-day, everybody is gone. I spent some time there, photographing the stalls, the activity, and the street food vendors.

Yet, what lies beyond the placid town, is the incredible beauty of the mountainscapes paired with traditional settlements. There were a few short day treks to reach some of these villages but for others, the walks were considerably longer. It took some effort, but it was worth it. It didn’t matter if it where Akha, Wa, En or Lahu, the reception from the inhabitants was simply incredible. These people live with the bare minimum, in very precarious wooden huts sheltered by oxidized sheet metal roofs, and still, the first order when they see you coming is to invite you to tea.

I still remember clearly, as I was approaching one of the villages, I stopped to get some aerial photos and footage with my drone. I piloted the drone above the village and seconds later, I saw a bunch of kids running like crazy to meet me downhill. I guess the humming sound was not very familiar and so it grabbed their attention. I will never forget the expressions on their faces when I returned and landed the drone. The surprise and admiration they had for the propelled device were as akin to if a ship just descended from space.

One of the things that caught my attention is that the natives of all the different ethnic groups, especially the women, still wear their traditional outfits and jewelry. It was a great experience to learn some more about their daily lives, customs, and beliefs. Beyond the anecdotes, I enjoyed my time in Kyaing Tong. Here are some of the photos, portraits, and landscapes from the tribes around Keng Tung.

Most of the photos for this post were taken with my Fuji GFX 50s and lenses. For the portraits, I used a Godox AD200 flash as fill and shot through a 38′ Octabox. The aerials were photographed with my DJI Mavic Pro.

That’s all for now, but there’s more coming soon. As always, feel free to comment. If you are interested in buying prints or licensing any of the photos, just click on the link.

I got here from Marrakesh. The ride took about three hours, and this is my first time in Essaouira. This is an extension of the 2018 Morocco photography tour and also serves as a scouting trip for the 2019 extension. Four people traveled with me. The route was relatively easy, with lovely rural sights and small hamlets along the way. We found a nice coffee place close to the Douar Oulad Driss village. Of course, we stopped for some photos of the “famous” Moroccan goats that climb trees. They were more of a tourist gimmick than reality, at least for me, but they were fun to watch.

Essaouira is laid back, contrary to the other medinas in Morocco; you can definitely feel a more serene atmosphere when you walk around the first time. Compared to the frenetic markets of Marrakesh or Fes, the alleyways of Essaouira never feel overcrowded; the rhythm is calm, and in general, the storekeepers don’t hassle you.

The inner walled city is a photographer’s dream, in fact, its name means “little picture” in Arabic. Famed by its vibrant blue and white buildings, one can spend a lifetime wandering the narrow streets, discovering and photographing colorful doors, passageways and spice markets.

But there is more than that, at least for me. South of the main square is the port and the former site of the Castelo Real of Mogador. I enjoyed this area the most and found myself coming back to it every time I was out with my camera.

When the tide is low, it is very easy to go down the ocean from here and photograph the city from a great vantage point. At this time, tidal pools form all over, and the possibilities for good compositions are almost endless.

The port itself is exciting. Hundreds of blue wooden boats are scattered in different places, around the late Castelo and other areas. This is perhaps the most photographed area of Essaouira, and the blue fisherman boats are one of the most iconic features of the harbor. Here you can also find the old citadel and fortified anchorage. Since there is no need fighting the reality of things, I spent most of the time taking photos around this location.

All the photos in this post were taken with the Fujifilm GFX 50s, and my three go-to lenses for trips and the system. You can read more about my GFX for travel by clicking here. I also had with me, and indeed used it extensively, my set of neutral density filters, and of course my tripod.

Essaouira is the perfect place to wind down after two weeks of touring Morocco. I can’t wait to go back next year. Essaouira is again an extension for the upcoming 2019 Morocco photography tour I am leading one more time for Digital Photo Mentor in May. At the time of writing this post, there are only five spots left on the tour. So if you want to learn more, follow this link.

Sometimes you get lucky and don’t have to sweat much for a pleasing photo; this was the case with the image in this post.

North Vietnam and the region of Sapa are abundant in photographic possibilities; you can find a variety of subjects, and one of the most recognized themes is, without a doubt, the rice paddies. This picture was made from just a few meters away from the homestay I was staying at in the village of Tha Pin.

This is the great thing about choosing to stay in the place you’re working in. You see, this afternoon was resting time; after wandering around the mountains of Sapa for a couple of days, all I wanted to do was to chill out and relax. I was at the home doing some editing when all of a sudden a storm burst out. It didn’t last long. When the rain stopped, I grabbed my gear and walked just a few meters to photograph this scene. This wouldn’t be possible if I’d stayed in Sapa town instead of the more authentic village.

There you go. As I always say, embrace lousy weather; it makes good photos. I photographed this scene with the Fujifilm X-T1, and the lens was the Fujinon XF 18-55mm F2.8-4 R LM OIS, all mounted on a tripod. I also used a soft grad two-stop neutral density filter on the sky to compensate for the exposure and get more details in the clouds.

When it comes to skylines, few cities in the world can offer as many opportunities as Dubai to do this kind of photography. Modern, vanguardist, and thriving are just some of the words I think of when I recall my trip to the city of dreams.

I spent a week there in January 2017 just photographing the ever-changing cityscape from various locations, and I had a fantastic time. There is only one thing that I’ve missed: fog. If you’ve seen it in other photos, you know what I mean. I had high hopes of photographing the buildings amidst rolling clouds of mist, but it didn’t happen. The good thing is that now, I have a good excuse to go back and try one more time … right?

Dubai is relatively easy to plan. All I did was a quick search for locations online and got many options, more than what I could shoot in a week counting two spots per day. Because some of these locations were from the rooftops of hotels or close to a specific resort and I wanted to have access granted, I booked my stay in three different places. My shooting location for the day could be as close as one elevator ride! Plus, I think it is more natural to convince someone to open up a door at dawn for you when you’re staying there.

This was the case with the photo below; it was shot from the rooftop bar of the Sheraton Four Points Sheikh Zayed. This bar, Level 43 Sky Lounge, is usually packed in the evenings, but I managed to talk to the concierge of the hotel and have it all to myself at dawn.

For this photo, I went wide, and I also used a 6-Stop ND to make the exposure long.
