Camboya VI: Aldea Flotante/ Floating Village

Hicimos un muy interesante tour para conocer algunas de las aldeas flotantes cerca del lago Tonle Sap. Es muy interesante como vive esta gente. Y los niños, como si hubieran nacido nadando. Los veia jugar desde los bordes de las casitas flotantes, y se me estremecia el corazon - y si se caen? Nah - seguro ya saben nadar!

Todas las casas flotaban, y se mudan de acuerdo con la estacion (si hay mas o menos agua). Hasta tenian un par de escuelas flotantes, y una iglesia catolica flotante, y una mesquita musulmana flotante, peluqueria flotante y mercadito flotante. Saben lo que faltaria? Una lancha medica (adventista) flotante. Quiero largar la idea, a ver si alguien se prende! No vimos ninguna clinica flotante (Hay mas de 70 aldeas en esa zona!).

Crian peces, cerdos, cocodrilos, gallinas, etc, todo en jaulas flotantes. Hasta los perros nadan de una casita a otra!

We took a tour of the floating villages near the Tonle Sap Lake. Very interesting. The kids must be born swimmers! All the houses float on the water, and the people move according to the season (if there's more water or less). They raise pigs, chickens, crocodiles, fish, all on floating cages. Even the dogs swim from one floating house to another!

We saw floating schools, a floating Catholic Church, a floating Moslem temple, floating hairdresser, floating shops - but no floating clinics. We imagined what it would be like to have floating Adventist clinics going from village to village - there's more than 70 villages there! Come on, you medical people... Hope someone takes up the challenge!

Camboya V: Campo de Lotus

Pasamos por un campo de lotus. Aca en la primera foto, estamos comiendo las semillas del lotus (las sacas del coso verde ese, y las pelas, y las comes asi nomas).

Aparte de comerlas, estas flores tienen mucho valor porque tienen simbolismo dentro del budismo. Ver

Pero mas alla de todo eso, son BELLISIMAS, y pasamos un momento hermoso disfrutando de tanta paz y belleza.

But beyond all that, they're simply BEAUTIFUL. We enjoyed the peace and beauty in that field.

Camboya IV: Ta Prohm

El Ta Prohm is famoso más que nada por los ENORMES árboles creciendo entre la construcción. Al templo lo están restaurando, pero se ha decidido que estos árboles deben quedar donde están, como si se estuvieran "comiendo" al templo. (Ah, de paso, en este templo es donde Angelina Jolie filmó "Tomb Raider". Nunca vi la película, pero bueno, es un dato...)

Vimos VARIOS templos más, pero no los pondré a todos en el blog. Con esto alcanza para mostrar lo interesante y variado de los templos de Angkor en Siem Reap, Camboya.

Ta Prohm is well known for the HUGE trees that have grown on the constructions, as if "swallowing up" the temple. The restoration team has decided that these trees have got to stay. This temple was also the filming site for "Tomb Raider" with Angelina Jolie (not that I've watched the movie, but it's just one of those things they tell you about the temple).

And with this, enough temples for now. We saw bunches of them, but I won't bother to post each one on the blog. The four temples featured here are enough to whet your appetite for Cambodia!

Camboya III: Banteay Srei

Este templo es relativamente pequeño, y data del 967 d.C. (Wikipedia). El nombre "Banteay Srei" significa, entre otras cosas, "citadela de las mujeres". Algunos dicen que es por las muchas mujeres esculpidas en las paredes. Otros dicen que el nivel de detalle sólo lo podría haber creado un mujer. Bue... Es un templo único, muy bello.

Banteay Srei ("Citadel of the Women") was built in 967 d.C (according to Wikipedia). It's a rather small, but very unique temple, full of detail in its sculptures and walls.

Camboya II: Bayon

Este templo, el Bayon, se encuentra dentro del complejo de Angkor Thom. Es famoso por la cantidad de caras que lo adornan. Los camboyanos bromean que es la típica cara khmer (camboyana).

This temple, the Bayon, is inside Angkor Thom, an ancient city in ruins. Its main feature is that it's covered with faces - what some people say is the typical Khmer face.

Visitamos el reino de Camboya unos dias, donde vimos los famosos templos milenarios que le dan fama al país. Angkor Wat es el más imponente, y el que aparece en la bandera y billetes camboyanos. Es un templo bellísimo.

We crossed over to Cambodia, mainly to see the famous, ancient temples there. Angkor Wat is the main temple, and the one that appears in everything Cambodian: flag, currency, etc. It's truly beautiful.

Estábamos esperando a Dani en el shopping, y el guardia nos miraba de reojo, curioso... Entonces Rolando se le acercó, y con una mezcla de español, alemán e inglés, le charló un ratito. No me preguntes cómo, pero se entendieron... y el guardia quedó sonriendo durante largo rato - me imagino que el día y el trabajo se les hicieron menos aburridos!

We were waiting, in a mall, for Daniel to come fetch us. The guard was eyeing us discreetly, curiously... so my father-in-law approached him and started talking to him in a mixture of English, Spanish and German. Don't ask me how, but they understood each other. After that, the guard was all smiles for a while... Hopefully this made his day a little more interesting!

Wat Traimit - Golden Buddha

En este templo hay un museo que cuenta la historia del pueblo chino en Tailandia. En el ultimo (tercer) piso, tiene el famoso Buddha de oro, que durante la guerra lo recubrieron de cemento, y parecia ser un ordinario Buddha de cemento, hasta que se rompio una parte de la capa, y por debajo vieron que habia un Buddha entero de oro debajo de esa capa de cemento!

This wat, in Chinatown, has a museum on the history of the Chinese people in Thailand (the Chinese-Thai). The third floor of the wat holds the famous Golden Buddha, which, during the war, had been coated in plaster, so that it looked like an uninteresting plaster Buddha, until some of the plaster chipped off, and underneath they found a golden Buddha!

My in-laws had been wishing for a photo of a Muslim woman. We don't have that kind of stuff in Argentina... Then we got our chance - while lining up for a taxi at MBK, we (ahem... "I") got courage out of who-knows-where, and asked one of the ladies if we could get her picture. She agreed!! Out of respect for her, I will not post her picture - especially after what she did: her father was there and suggested that she let US wear a niqab! We NEVER would've even thought of that idea, much less ask for it! So here we are, with the most unexpected photos of the day! They were from Dubai. How to thank them? We were warmed by their openness and generosity.

Hay varias musulmanas dando vueltas en los shopping, pero por supuesto, no le permitian a Rolando sacarles una foto. Por fin tuvimos la oportunidad: mientras hacíamos cola para tomar un taxi, les dimos el paso a unas musulmanas para que pudieran pararse en la cola junto al resto de su flia. Entonces junté coraje y le pedí a una sacarle una foto. Dijo que sí! Por respeto a ella, no publico su foto. Pero lo más lindo fue la sugerencia de su padre: prestarnos su niqab! De ahí que pudimos sacar las fotos más inesperadas del día! La flia esta era de Dubai. Quedamos encnatados y admirados de su generosidad y buena onda!

Vale la pena venir a Tailandia aunque sea para visitar este increíble museo. Es de mármol de carrara, y por dentro tiene piezas exquisitas de arte tailandés - nos dejó sin habla y sin respiración por una hora! Lástima que no permiten sacar fotografías adentro.

This incredible museum is worth a trip to Thailand. No photographs are allowed inside (unfortunately), but there's exquisite Thai art inside. It truly took our breaths away!

No pants (on ladies) are allowed when you go inside, so they sold us these sarongs.

No permiten que las mujeres entren al museo en pantalón, así que nos hicieron comprar estas pareo...
