Working as a wedding photographer in Sydney is great! What a wedding on the beach! Thanks to my friend Trish and her beautiful tealilyphotographystudio I had the chance of shooting this wonderful wedding on the beach in whale beach in Sydney. Claudia & David were a stunning couple and the reception at the Sergeant’s mess was perfect. I really love them, they were super relaxed and cute. Being a wedding photographer here in Sydney is completely different from being a wedding photographer in Italy. Light keeps changing continuously during the day, couples are more relaxed and I really love it.

What an honor for me to photograph a wedding photographer here in Sydney! Elias the creator of Eclipse studio after seeing my pictures decided that I should have been be the author of his portraits for his new website. So we took the car, searched for a beautiful location, a simple 50mm lens, few minutes of fun and here are some pictures from the session. As soon as his websites will be online you could see more of them. Still I can not reveal the name because it is “under construction” but when online … you’ll be the first to know it! Elias is a talented wedding photographer here in Sydney, I had the honor of work with him two years ago and this season will be my pleasure to share a few days working with him again. I can’t wait anymore, I’m really excited!

Che onore, fotografare un fotografo di matrimoni qui a Sydney!! E’ proprio così. Elias il creatore di Eclipse studio dopo aver visto le mie foto e aver scelto di ispirarsi al profilo del mio sito, ha deciso che dovessi essere io l’autore dei ritratti del suo prossimo sitoweb. I can not stop looking at this photo, the print has been on my desk for the last few days and I can’t live without it. That’s why it is the selected one this week. The red curtain and the chillies are a key to the answer but only at a superficial level, it is something else that attracts me the most. Of course the photo was taken while he was thinking of something else without even knowing that I was there. The available light yellow and unpretentious becomes almost magical, thanks to the beautiful lens 1.2. But his eyes are the key to my love for this photo. It ‘a suspended moment, a look that doesn’t challenge you. This appeals to me continuously. I don’t remember exactly what he was staring at in that moment but it seems as he was trying to look for something inside him, something that was not present at that party, in the midst of the immense uproar. It is winter and we are in the happy hour hall, about 150 people in no more than 5 meters wide by 20 long. It seems like there is nothing around him while in reality a lot of music and lots of chatter are sorrounding him. Non posso smettere di guardare questa foto. Da giorni è stampata e poggiata sulla mia scrivania ed io non posso farne più a meno. Ecco perchè è lei la protagonista questa settimana. Il rosso della tenda ed i peperoncini sono una chiave della risposta ma solo a livello superficiale, è qualcosa di più che mi attrae. Naturalmente la foto è stata scattata mentre il soggetto pensava ad altro senza neanche sapere che io fossi lì. La luce ambiente, gialla e senza troppe pretese, diventa quasi magica grazie alla bellissima ottica 1,2. Ma è il suo sguardo, è lì la chiave del mio amore per questa foto. E’ un momento sospeso, uno sguardo che non ti sfida. Questo mi attrae irrimediabilmente. Non ricordo esattamente cosa fissase in quel momento il testimone dello sposo ma sembra quasi cercasse qualcosa dentro di se, qualcosa che non era presente a quella festa, in mezzo a quel baccano immenso. E’ inverno e siamo nella sala dell’aperitivo, circa 150 persone in non più di 5 metri di larghezza per 20 di lunghezza. Sembra ci sia il nulla intorno a lui e invece tanta musica e tante chiacchiere lo circondano. Un pezzo della mia scrivania qui a Sydney che sono felice di condividere con voi

Couples often ask me why I stay until the end of the evening. Most of them and guests believe I’m tired after 12/14 hours trying to collect the moments without interfering. It is often difficult to explain. I know very well that many of the photos that I capture will never be published in any albums and even printed, then why do it? If you think in economic terms (minimum cost, maximum performance) I think I should only shoot 6 hours at marriage, after years of experience you know what will happen and where It will happen. So why do you have to spend your money in order to hire me? I always tell my couples, I love photographing the decisive moments and everything that happens in between. The most interesting moments occur at such times and not if I arrive half an hour before the ceremony or if I leave twenty minutes after the cake cutting.

This picture, which is one of those I love most about the whole marriage, is one of the last I took before putting away the equipment after nearly 15 hours. Of course It was not chosen by the couple and not even printed by them from the files in high resolution. But I just need to look at It to find more strength and joy to shoot till the last second the next marriage. I love the suspender that pulls the pants and that perhaps doesn’t really match with the belt. I love that belly full of a whole day of food and wine, synonymous with good food and celebration. I love the bar, the perfect background for the famous last drink before leaving, limoncello, grappa or sambuca. The party is almost over, It is time to digest all the good things eaten, the final help to the intestine on a night that promises to be full of “work”

Spesso le coppie mi chiedono perchè rimanere fino a fine della serata, molti mi credono stanco dopo 12/14 ore a zampettare cercando di raccogliere i momenti in maniera vera. Spesso è difficile da spiegare. Lo so bene anche io, molte delle foto che catturo non verranno mai pubblicate in nessun album e neanche stampate, perchè farle allora? Se ragionassi in termini economici (minima spesa, massima resa) penso potrei scattare solo 6 ore a matrimonio, dopo anni di esperienza sai cosa succederà e dove succederà. Se così fosse allora io a cosa servirei? Lo dico sempre alle mie coppie, amo fotografare i momenti decisivi e tutto ciò che succede nel mezzo. I momenti più interessanti avvengono in quei momenti e non se arrivo mezz’ora prima della cerimonia o se vado via dopo venti minuti dal taglio della torta.

Questa foto, che è una di quella che più amo dell’intero matrimonio, è una delle ultime che ho scattato prima di mettere via le macchine dopo quasi 15 ore di lavoro. Naturalmente non è stata scelta dagli sposi e credo neanche stampata dagli stessi dai file in alta risoluzione. Mi basta però guardarla per trovare ancora la forza e la gioia di scattare fino all’ultimo secondo il prossimo matrimonio. Amo la bretella che tira il pantalone e che forse non è proprio il massimo con la cintura. Adoro quella pancia piena di un’intera giornata di cibo e vino, sinonimo di buona cucina e di festa. Amo il bancone del bar, è lo sfondo ideale per il famosissimo ultimo drink prima di andare via, il limoncello, la grappa o la sambuca di turno. La festa sta per finire, è ora di digerire tutto il ben di Dio mangiato, l’estremo aiuto per l’intestino in una notte che si annuncia piena di “lavoro”

Un nuovo anno è ufficialmente iniziato, le vacanze sono terminate ed è giunto il momento di iniziare con i nuovi propositi. Ne ho parecchi, come tutti quanti d’altronde, ma uno a cui pensavo da tempo è giunto il momento di metterlo in pratica. Ho deciso di abbandonare la WPJA (wedding photojournalist association). La Wpja di cui ho avuto l’onore di essere membro dal 2006 quando i fotografi iscritti erano più o meno 15 in Italia ha tradito, a mio parere, il motivo per cui era nata. Al giorno d’oggi credo sia fondamentalmente un contenitore il cui unico scopo da parte degli organizzatori è fare cassa. Nel 2006 se non ricordo male la quota associativa era di circa 150 dollari e per i 15 che eravamo forse davvero non ci si poteva aspettare dall’associazione niente di più. Oggi la quota è arrivata a 300 dollari e 140 i soli fotografi di matrimonio in Italia. 42000 dollari raccolti dalle tasche dei fotografi italiani per cosa? Quale la cultura fotografica che viene salvaguardata e su cui si investe da parte della WPJA? Molti di questi fotografi nulla hanno a che vedere con il wedding reportage ed un numero così alto di fotografi tra cui scegliere diventa quasi un disservizio per le coppie. Dove finisce il filtro dell’associazione? Come posso fidarmi di un’associazione che mette insieme 140 fotografi tra cui veri geni del genere e altri completamente brocchi? Ognuno è libero di fare ciò che vuole, intendiamoci, ma credo le mie coppie non meritino questo. Sarebbe come fare scegliere un album alla coppia tra 140 marche che possediamo nel nostro studio. Quanti credete resterebbero ancora seduti di fronte al fotografo? Non posso chiedere alla WPJA di tornare all’inizio poichè capisco che i soldi possano fare piacere agli organizzatori, ma allora cosa fare per essere sempre più serio nei confronti delle mie coppie? Ecco ho deciso io di lasciare questa associazione che molto mi ha dato e credo molto abbia dato al genere prima di perdersi negli ultimi anni dietro la raccolta di danari.

Holidays are about to end here in Italy and a new year is waiting for me. Before starting with this new adventure is time to give thanks. It is not easy when a year like 2011, has just left. The year 2011 was a great year for me, full of international awards, beautiful couples who have decided to trust me and my work, a good assistant and a fantastic Orly that with her studio work and new graphics made ​​my work more interesting. I worked hard and now I need a little rest and sun in Australia where new weddings and new challenges await me. Next year I will photograph less weddings than this year in Italy, I will focus even more on quality and service to offer to my couples. I’ll travel a lot in Italy, from north to south, and this fills me with joy.

Le vacanze stanno per terminare ed un nuovo anno lavorativo mi aspetta. Prima di iniziare questa nuova avventura è giunto il momento di ringraziare. Non è semplice quando un anno come quello del 2011 ci ha appena lasciato. Il 2011 è stato un ottimo anno per me, pieno di riconoscimenti internazionali, bellissime coppie che hanno deciso di avere fiducia nel mio lavoro, un ottimo assistente e una fantastica Orly che con il suo lavoro in studio e la sua nuova grafica ha reso il mio lavoro ancora più interessante. Ho lavorato molto e adesso ho bisogno di un pò di riposo e caldo in Australia dove nuovi matrimoni mi aspettano e nuove sfide. L’anno prossimo fotograferò meno matrimoni di quest’anno in  Italia, mi concentrerò ancora di più sulla qualità e sul servizio da offrire alle mie coppie. Viaggerò tanto in Italia, da nord a sud e questo mi riempie di gioia.

Ricordate il matrimonio di Andrea e Jennifer di quest’anno? E’ stato uno dei più interessanti che abbia fotografato insieme al mio amico Tommaso. Proprio ieri Andrea e Jennifer sono passati in studio a ritirarlo. La gioia nei loro occhi e la commozione mentre scorrevano le pagine mi hanno dato l’energia e la  forza necessaria per questo nuovo anno che sta per iniziare. Ancora poche settimane e volerò verso l’Australia, a Sydney per 3 mesi e poi di nuovo qui in Italia. Fotogiornalismo e wedding reportage continueranno a mischiarsi sempre più.

Do you remember the wedding of Andrea and Jennifer this year? It was one of the most interesting I’ve photographed with my friend Tommaso. Yesterday, Andrew and Jennifer passed in the studio to pick the coffeetable book up. The joy and emotion in their eyes while turning the pages gave me the energy and strength for this new year that is going to start. A few more weeks and I will fly to Australia, in Sydney for 3 months and then again here in Italy. Wedding photojournalism and reportage will continue to mix more and more.

Many people ask me why a photojournalist feel pleasure to be a wedding photographer. The question of course hides a widespread ignorance and prejudice particularly when comparing this sector. It’s true that about 90% of the category with its work does nothing but confirm this prejudice, but there is a good 10% around, just try to know and find it. But what do I love about these special days? The photo above chosen for this week is the answer. Weddings are a concentrate of humanity. Often in editorial coverage you need more time to find this humanity, during weddings this comes out in a concentrated form, without any filters and super quick. You just need to see and photograph it. Not all photographers do this, and not all couples prefer this to emerge during the coverage. That’s reasonable and even without having studied treatises and essays it is very well known that the sale in this area is emotional especially towards the bride and her mother. Everyone wants to look beautiful and sometimes even more beautiful. The same naturally also applies to relatives and friends who sometimes don’t like them in pictures and then politely ask the couple to take that photo out… No problem, do not get me wrong, I repeat, it is natural and understandable. But there is humanity in every corner, in every scene and it is simply asking to be documented, photographed, told. It sometimes happens that couples ask me all the photos I take during the day. They are there, they say, if I do not use them where’s the sense in leaving them stored in some hard drive with the risk of being forgotten? The answer is written above, the answer is humanity. Not everyone would see it and not evreyone is ready to accept it. The filter of a professional photographer (and not just the owner of nice gears) is necessary and in my opinion that’s what makes the difference compared to those with a camera taking pictures during a wedding publishing them after a few moments in any social network.

The photo above is from a wedding in Sicily, I love it. The father of the bride, assisted by his son, tried to put on cufflinks. It is not that easy for those not accustomed to use them often and that day, in Sicily at 2 p.m., the heat was terrible. The father began to sweat like many others (including the photographer). He felt the need after minutes of authentic “torture” to take refuge in the bathroom to wash his face and wipe the sweat off. The left arm cufflink is not yet closed despite several attempts, we’re in the middle of this ritual that is going to be terminated immediately. That’s why I love this picture, It reminds me that during such moments a man remains a man. Does Prince William Duke of Cambridge also sweat before saying yes to the beautiful new Duchess Catherine Middleton? Do really the Dukes belong to a different human race? Unfortunately we will never know.

Molti mi chiedono come mai un fotogiornalista provi piacere ad essere un fotografo di matrimonio. La domanda nasconde ovviamente ignoranza e soprattutto un diffusissimo pregiudizio nel confronto di questo settore. E’ vero che circa il 90% della categoria col proprio lavoro non fa altro che confermare questo pregiudizio ma c’è un buon 10% in giro, basta saperlo cercare e trovare. Già, ma cosa amo di questi giorni così speciali? La foto in alto, scelta per questa settimana, è la risposta. I matrimoni sono un concentrato di umanità. Spesso nei reportage editoriali occorre molto più tempo per trovarla, durante i matrimoni questa viene fuori in forma concentrata, senza filtri ed in pochissimo tempo. Basta saperla vedere e soprattutto decidere di fotografarla. Non tutti i fotografi lo fanno e non tutte le coppie si accorgono di questo oppure preferiscono che nella foto tutto ciò non emerga. E’ naturalmente comprensibile e non occorre aver studiato trattati su trattati per capire che la vendita in questo settore è di natura emozionale soprattutto nei confronti della sposa e della mamma della stessa. Ognuno vuole vedersi bello/a e a volte addirittura più bello/a di quello che è. Lo stesso discorso vale naturalmente anche per i parenti e gli amici che sebbene non siano i diretti committenti spesso non si piacciono e allora chiedono gentilmente alla coppia di intervenire affinchè quella foto… Nessun problema, non fraintendetemi, ripeto è tutto naturale e comprensibile. Ma questa umantà c’è, ad ogni angolo, in ogni scena ed è lì che chiede di essere documentata, fotografata, raccontata. Capita a volte che le coppie mi chiedano tutte le foto che io scatto durante la giornata. Sono lì, se tanto io non le uso che senso ha lasciarle archiviate in qualche memoria col rischio che vengano dimenticate? La risposta sta in quanto scritto sopra, la risposta è l’umanità. Non tutti sarebbero pronti a vederla e soprattutto accettarla. Il filtro del fotografo quando professionista (e non solo possessore di belle macchine) è necessario ed è a mio parere ciò che fa la differenza rispetto a chi dotato di una macchina fotografica scatta foto per pubblicarle dopo pochi istanti in un qualsiasi social network.

La foto sopra è tratta da un matrimonio in Sicilia, la adoro. Il papà della sposa, aiutato dal figlio, provava a indossare dei gemelli. Impresa non semplice per chi non è abituato ad usarli spesso e quel giorno, in Sicilia alle due del pomeriggio, il caldo era terribile. Il papà iniziava a sudare così come molti altri (fotografo compreso). Ha sentito il bisogno dopo minuti di autentica “tortura” di rifugiarsi in bagno per sciacquarsi il viso e asciugare quel sudore. Il polsino del braccio sinistro non è ancora chiuso nonostante gli svariati tentativi, siamo nel mezzo di questo rituale che tra pochi secondi sarà terminato. Ecco perchè adoro questa fotografia, mi ricorda che anche in momenti come quelli l’uomo rimane uomo. Avrà sudato anche il principe William duca di Cambridge prima di dire si alla bellissima neo Duchessa Catherine Middleton? Sono forse i Duchi realmente appartenenti ad un genere umano diverso? Purtroppo non lo sapremo mai.
