It’s that time of year again—summer family photo season is here, and if you’re anything like most of my clients, you’re probably staring at your closet wondering how on earth you’re going to coordinate summer family photo outfits without everyone looking like they’re wearing matching pajamas. Trust me, I’ve been there as both a photographer AND a mom trying to wrangle my own family into photo-worthy outfits!

Summer is absolutely the perfect time for family sessions when the weather is so beautiful and warm. The beach is a great option in the summer when the weather is nice! There’s something magical about capturing families against the backdrop of golden sand and sparkling water, with that gorgeous natural light that only comes during these longer summer days. The relaxed beach atmosphere helps everyone feel more comfortable and natural, making for some truly stunning family portraits. Fields that are still a little green and haven’t turned golden like they will in the fall are another great location option for summer family photos.

I know how hard it is to choose outfits for photos and I actually think it’s the hardest part of having a photo session! You need to make sure everybody looks good and is comfortable, and styling a whole family together can be quite challenging. I understand this struggle completely!

Through nearly two decades of photographing families and developing my styling eye, I’ve learned that families look their best when there’s a consistent color theme, but without everybody being too ‘matchy-matchy’. For summer family photo outfits, I actually think it’s the easiest outfit season to style. Because you can use breezy fabrics like linens and cottons to keep everybody cool, kids can be in shorts and they’re happier, and it’s a little less formal than fall family photos. These photoshoots often take place at the beach or outdoors in a field, so they can be a little more casual.

When selecting your summer family photo outfits, start with 2-3 main colors and add 1-2 accent colors maximum. Great color palettes for summer are things like blues, greens, and neutrals—things that are light and breezy just like the season. These combinations work beautifully: soft neutrals with pops of color, earth tones, or classic navy and cream.

Colors to avoid include neon brights, all black (too hot for summer sessions), or too many competing patterns. Consider your photo location when choosing colors—beach sessions call for different palettes than park settings.

My best piece of advice is to choose one clothing item as your anchor piece. Usually, it’s a dress for mom or a daughter that can have a light pattern or specific colors. Then choose the other family members’ outfits so their colors coordinate with the colors in that one dress you’re starting from. In summer, evening sessions usually start between 6:30 and 7 PM, especially at the beach where we’re outdoors in bright sun with no shade. Beach sessions often start around 7 PM.

Studio newborn sessions often involve more styling and posing of both the baby and parents. Newborns are typically sleepy and curled up in sweet poses, and I also usually swaddle babies for a portion of the session. With lifestyle newborn photography, however, things tend to be more relaxed and spontaneous. The emphasis is placed on natural moments and authentic connections rather than on posed photos or the use of props. Your home and family are the stars of the show, rather than the studio backdrop, and the baby doesn’t need to be asleep for this to happen.

Lifestyle newborn sessions rely heavily on natural light, so it’s essential to make sure your home has ample light in the areas where the photos will take place. Ideally, we’ll want to take the photos near big windows, open doors, or other areas where sunlight can pour in. If you’re concerned about the lighting I’ll have you send me some photos of your home so that I can make sure there will be enough to properly light the images.  If not, I’ll recommend a studio session instead.

2. Tidy Up the Space

Since your home will be heavily featured in the photos, take a little time to tidy up the rooms where the session will take place. You don’t need to make your house perfect, but removing clutter from the background can help focus the attention on your family and the newborn. Keep the areas around the nursery, living room, or wherever the session will take place clean and simple.

3. Choose Simple, Neutral Clothing

For a timeless, classic look it’s best to dress in neutral tones, soft pastels, or earthy colors. Avoid clothes with logos, busy patterns, or bright colors that can distract from the natural beauty of the images. Comfort is key, so choose outfits that make you feel relaxed and at ease during the session.

4. Don’t Forget the Little Details

While lifestyle newborn photography tends to focus on natural, candid moments, the little details matter too. Don’t forget to include meaningful items such as the baby’s favorite blanket, sentimental items, or any family heirlooms that you want to incorporate into the session.

Both lifestyle newborn photography and studio newborn photography are incredible ways to capture the beauty and emotion of welcoming a new baby. The choice ultimately comes down to your preferences and what you’re looking for in your photos. However, if you prefer a more traditional styled session with a sleepy posed baby, a studio session is the way to go.

Fall is definitely my busiest time of year as a family portrait photographer.  It’s a great time of year for an updated portrait and I photograph so many families year after year.  The number one question that I’m asked as a family photographer is ‘Can you give us some fall family photo outfit ideas?’  I’m going to break it down for you today!  Let’s chat about how to plan the perfect outdoor fall family photo outfits!

Choosing the right outfits is important for many reasons…from how everyone feels in their photos to the overall aesthetic of the final images.  It can be overwhelming to find the perfect outfit for yourself, let alone the whole family.  Making sure that everything coordinates and will look good in photos is enough to drive a person crazy.  But don’t stress!  I’ve been photographing families for over 18 years and I can guide you along the way.  Read along for lots of helpful tips and fall family photo outfit ideas.

What are Fall Family Photos?

Fall family portraits have become increasingly popular over the years; so much so that it’s become my busiest time of year by far.  These fall family portrait sessions are typically photographed in outdoor locations that incorporate nature and the changing seasons into the background of the photos.  While we don’t have the dramatic changes in seasons here in Southern California that they do in other parts of the country, we do have beautiful open fields that turn golden in the fall, and if you search hard enough you might even be able to find some leaves turning colors! 

The key to great fall family photos, or great photos at any time of the year, is a coordinating color palette. You want to avoid being what I call ‘matchy-matchy’ – everyone matching exactly and wearing all the same colors. This can quickly and obviously date your photos.  This was typically seen in family photos when I was a kid, and nobody wants that! Instead, choose one core color to start with and incorporate varying neutral shades and textures to tie the looks together. 

Oftentimes, when we think of fall family photos, we think of fields full of pumpkins, trees with turning leaves, and baskets full of mums. However, since we don’t have as much fall color here in Ventura County, we can use outfit color choices to make the photos feel like fall.  Focus on warm neutral colors and lots of texture when planning your fall family photo outfit ideas.

10 Fall Family Photo Outfit Ideas & Tips for Dressing the Family

Tip 1: Choose a Starting Point

Beginning this process is the hardest part!  It can seem daunting to find the perfect outfits for your whole family and make sure they all work together in photos.  I always recommend starting with one core piece, whether it’s mom’s dress, dad’s shirt, or your little one’s dress, and build out from there.  Typically this piece will have a pattern that contains a few different colors.  Build from there and choose colors for the rest of the family that have the same colors that are in the core piece.

Tip 2: Neutrals and Earth Tones are Classics 

Almost everyone looks good in neutrals, and they are usually easy to find in stores.  They are classic, timeless, and are also warm colors that inherently have a fall feel to them.

Tip 3: Coordinate but Don’t be Matchy-Matchy

Remember when everyone wore white t-shirts and blue jeans for their beach photos?  I sure do!  It’s definitely a dated look that we don’t want to recreate.  Instead, choose complimentary colors that coordinate, but don’t match exactly.  We want all of the tones to work together, and have a visual break in the color scheme.

Tip 4: Avoid Busy Patterns

Subtle patterns work well in photos, but loud/busy patterns take attention away from what is happening in an image and draw it unnecessarily to the clothing.  Subtle is best as far as patterns go!

Tip 5: Textures and Layers for the Win

Textures and layers all add depth and visual interest to an image.  Thick cable knit sweaters, denim jackets, scarves, a cardigan over a button-down shirt for dad; these all give fall vibes and will help keep everyone warm and happy if the session happens to take place on a chilly day.

Tip 6: Add Accessories After the Base Outfits Have Been Chosen

A cute hat for a toddler, a scarf for dad, a pair of statement earrings for mom-these are all ways to infuse personality and add visual interest to your images, so don’t forget to plan to add some accessories when thinking about your fall family photo outfit ideas.

Tip 7: Don’t Forget About Shoes

Unless the session is at the beach (where bare feet are my preference!), you’ll need to choose shoes that will work with your outfits.  My top tip is to make sure that the shoe color is neutral and not distracting.  For moms, tall leather boots are perfect for outdoor fall family photos!

Tip 8: Wear Natural Makeup

For moms, natural makeup looks are best.  I have great hair and make up artists that I can recommend that know just how to style you to look your best in photos.  If you’d prefer to do your own hair and makeup, choose neutral shades and apply just slightly more than you would wear for an everyday look.

Tip 9: Choose Clothing that You’re Comfortable In

If you feel uncomfortable in your clothes, it will show in the final images.  Make sure you’ve tried your clothes on ahead of time and that the whole family is cozy and comfy in the outfits that you’ve chosen.  It really will make a difference in how the session goes!

Tip 10: Consider Where You’ll Hang the Final Images in Your Home

When thinking about the color palette for your fall family photo outfit ideas, also consider the décor in your home. If you choose outfit colors for your photos that are bright reds and oranges while the décor in your home is neutrals and blues, when you go to hang your family photos on the wall there is a very real possibility that they’ll look out of place. Let’s be honest, the reason we go through the effort (and investment!) of family photos is to enjoy them. Plan ahead so that your final images will look great in your home.

• Maxi dresses – my favorite go-to for moms.  They are comfortable, super flattering, and easy to find.  They come in long sleeved, short sleeved, and sleeveless styles.  Very versatile and a perfect ‘starting point’ piece!
• Sweater Dresses – very fall vibes – can be paired with a belt and tall boots to complete the look.
• Jeans and a slouchy sweater –  more of a relaxed look or for moms who just aren’t into dresses.
• Avoid: clothing that doesn’t fit comfortably or shows bra straps.

• Chinos and a button-down shirt are a dad staple for family photos!
• Chambray shirts are my personal favorite for dad’s.  They look great on everyone, add the perfect amount of texture, and won’t compete with other outfits that have patterns.
• Solid polo with jeans for a casual look.
• Avoid:  logos, graphics, and busy patterns.

• Cable knit onesies – a perfect and comfy option for boys and girls that adds great texture!
• Rompers – keeping it simple with pastel colors or light patterns
• Avoid: outfits that are too big!  They look like they’re swallowing the baby up on camera, and don’t photograph well at all.

• Girls – dresses (either solids or patterns), jeans & knit sweaters, rompers.

• Choose outfits that mirror the parents in color and style.
• Keep clothing comfortable suitable for playing or sitting on the floor.
• Avoid:  Dresses without matching bloomers for little girls.  This can limit posing and movement!

Final Prep for Your Fall Family Photo Outfit Ideas

– It’s a great idea to have backup outfits for your little ones.  Things happen and sometimes clothing gets dirty or spilled on.  You’ll have piece of mind for your session if you have a Plan B in place!

– Make sure to choose outfits that are appropriate for the weather.  Here in So Cal we can have wild swings in temperature in the fall, so it’s a good idea to choose outfits based on the forecast.  Making sure kiddos aren’t too cold or too warm during a photo session can go a long way in helping to keep them happy and smiling.

– Do a final check for wrinkles, stains, and pet hair before the session.

Benefits of Studio Newborn Portraits

Both in home and in studio newborn sessions are of course beautiful, but if I’m being honest I have to say that I really do favor my studio for newborn photography Thousand Oaks.  Here are a few of the reasons why, which might be helpful to consider when deciding on a photographer for your newborn session.

The Light is Consistent and is Always Beautiful

I am so fortunate to have a cozy studio in a gorgeous ivy-covered cottage on our property. The natural light pours in and I can create glowy, well-lit portraits of my littlest subjects.  I know the light in my studio very well, and previously, when I offered in home newborn portraits I was never quite sure what the lighting conditions would be like when I arrived at my client’s home. 

When my clients come to me I always know they’ll be getting my best work with the prettiest, most consistent light. My studio also features a kitchen with a well stocked coffee bar (new parents running on little sleep always make a b-line for the coffee bar when they arrive!), a separate changing room, and a private bathroom.

Props and Other Must-Have Items are Close at Hand

My newborn work is not heavily posed, but there are certain items that I use to create sweet & cozy, curled-up images of newborns.  When working in my newborn photography studio these items are within reach and I’m able to provide an optimal environment for babies and their families. I have plenty of background blankets, wraps, knit diaper covers, hats, bonnets, and headbands.

While you are welcome to bring any items you love (sentimental and handmade items are especially encouraged!), you don’t need to worry about buying much at all for the baby to wear. I have what we need, and like to keep things simple so that the focus stays on the baby. Everything we need can be found in my studio. If you absolutely must shop for a couple of cute things for your session, Etsy is a great place to look.

My Studio is Pretty (and You Won’t Have to Worry About Cleaning Your House!)

Neutral walls, big windows, and wide-plank wood floors are a blank canvas for portraits.  It’s a place where I can create a variety of looks for different types of portrait sessions.  Also, when you come to the studio for a newborn session you won’t have to worry about trying to pick up your house to create a space to take photos.  Let’s be real – those first few days with a newborn are a whirlwind and you’ll likely be exhausted.  Leave the mess behind and come in to the studio to capture your baby at this precious and fleeting age!

Malibu’s coastline is like a postcard come to life, with dramatic cliffs, golden beaches, and endless ocean vistas. We have so many gorgeous locations from green fields, to hiking trails with show-stopping views, and of course the many beautiful beaches which are far too numerous to mention them all. Here’s a bit more about a few of my favorites.

Top Beaches for Malibu Photos:

El Matador Beach–

Think towering cliffs, arched rock formations, and golden sands—El Matador Beach is a Malibu photographer’s dream. While this beach can be busy and is a bit of a challenge to get down to (many sets of stairs and a fairly steep path), it can be worth the effort! If there are no members of your group who have mobility issues, and you’re up for an adventure, El Matador is an iconic Malibu location for portraits. El Pescador Beach–

Tucked away along the coast, El Pescador Beach is a local fave for its secluded feel and amazing sunsets. It’s the perfect spot for capturing a more laid-back beach vibes with your loved ones. It’s far less crowded than El Matador, has easier parking, and an easier path to get down to the water. Like El Matador it has gorgeous cliffs overlooking the water so that there is some variety in the backdrop of the photos. We can start with overlook images up on the cliffs with the ocean in the background, and then head down to the beach for images on the sand.

Zuma Beach–

With its wide sandy shores, easy paved parking, and iconic lifeguard stands, Zuma Beach is where it’s at for some classic Malibu beach fun. Think Baywatch! If you’re not up for hiking and prefer a straight and easy walk out to the sand, Zuma Beach might just be the perfect spot for you Malibu beach photos.

Point Mugu Beach–

A bit further North up the coast, Point Mugu Beach offers rugged cliffs, pristine sand, and endless ocean views. This beach isn’t the best for swimming as it has bigger waves and a pretty harsh break. The water gets deep close to shore which makes it photograph a more vibrant blue color. It’s gorgeous and is probably my favorite local beach as a Malibu photographer. It also has plenty of easy parking and is a straight and simple walk out to the sand.

2. We Have Gorgeous Weather

Let’s talk about Malibu’s weather—it’s seriously something else and we are seriously so lucky the vast majority of the time! With sunny skies, gentle breezes, and mild temperatures year-round, it’s like living in a perpetual summer paradise. Whether it’s a sunrise maternity shoot or a sunset family session, you can pretty much always count on perfect weather to enhance the beauty of our coastal landscape.

Malibu’s weather isn’t just about sunny days and clear skies, it’s about the laid-back and magical vibe that comes with it. There’s something about the warm sunshine, the salty sea breeze, and the sound of waves crashing against the shore that just makes you feel alive! As a photographer, I love capturing that sense of magic and tranquility, and Malibu’s weather plays a big part in making that happen.
