When I was doing my residency in New Zealand in November, I would go on daily walks. Sometimes I would wander around neighboring farm’s pastures, other times I would walk down the highway and down side roads into the hills. Since the residency was surrounded by sheep and cow paddocks, it was common to see places to cross the fences. This one was right next to the house, hidden among some plants taller than me with fronds that could slice your face open. I remember hopping across this spot many times, listening to music, holding my camera. Good times.

When I was coming back to America from Auckland, New Zealand I had a five-hour layover in Tahiti. Of course checking back in would be easy since it’s French Polynesia, so I hopped on Couch Surfing and found someone who was kind enough to show me around the area to pass the layover time. What I saw of Polynesia was incredible – exactly what it looks like in photos and films. I was also lucky enough to be there during sunset, so we hopped off the scooter and I got this great picture on the beach. You can tell the lifestyle here is incredible – it’s always warm, almost always sunny, and people are very laid back. I think if I end up moving to Australia, a visit to Tahiti might be in order again. I had so much fun while I was there!

Music: I’ve been listening to an indie/experimental/rock Australian band called The Moderns lately among other things. They’re definitely worth a look and a listen. If you happen to be near one of their gigs, their live performances are better than their albums (and their albums are GOOD!).

Books: I just finished A Game of Thrones by George RR Martin… it’s one of the best fantasy books I have ever read. I’m putting it on this blog becuase it’s that good. Yeah, the TV show is excellent too, but the book is better. I really can’t wait to read the next one in the series.

Books: I continued to re-read Jane Eyre after finishing Game of Thrones. Even though the two books are really in two different realms, Jane Eyre actually seems annoying (and I like Jane Eyre!).

Music: I’m seriously wishing that Afro Celt Soundsystem would release another album. I’ve been listening to them non-stop in the house and I still can’t get enough after eight or nine years!

Continue reading »]]> I’ve got a number of photos up in the galleries now from my trip through Australia and New Zealand. By all means, these aren’t the only things I have to post so expect more updates in the near future.
There is a set of infrared landscapes and an album called “Horses up Close” in my personal photography gallery – both are black and white and mostly shot in New Zealand.
I also have some new portraits up of a new friend named Zara who I met in Australia. She was seriously fun to photograph!
Alright, back to editing – hopefully I’ll have more stuff up soon!

I spent a couple of days with some people in New Zealand who were into reenacting the medieval life – there were sword fights, archery contests, giant fires, etc. etc. One of my favorite things to watch, though, was the archery on horseback. The particular horse and rider in the photo above probably hit the target the most. Hopefully I’ll get more photos up from this because they’re pretty cool!

Where to begin?!
I haven’t updated in well over a month because I’ve been traveling. At the moment I am in a remote area of New Zealand in the middle of an artist residency desperately trying to work on a masters research proposal but finding that my brain has turned to goo. Of course I spent nearly a month traveling around Australia seeing old friends and checking out universities for my masters degree.
I have been working on photography, I promise! I’ve actually been doing a lot of night shots and infrared photography and I will try to update with these photos before long. But of course my priorities lay with my applications.
To appease myself and any readers out there I’ve left a photo of a fisherman on the beach in Currumbin.
I’ve also canceled my main travel blog because I got frustrated with the obligation of constantly updating while also trying to enjoy myself while actually traveling. It wasn’t for me, so it’s over. The end.
Now… back I go to writing a crazy research proposal in hopes of getting accepted into school!
