Creating Copper Text Effect

This is a strong and eye-catching text effect, though relatively simple to create. We’ll be using bevel and emboss styles, pattern overlays, and combining different techniques to mock-up the text into a related background. Final Image Preview

Step 1

Copper is a wonderful metal. It’s strong and resistant but easy to handle. Besides, copper is great when you’re designing grunge and old-style graphics or websites. So here’s a simple and quick way to add this particular effect to your text and shapes.

First, create a new black document, 1024 pixels by 768 pixels this time. Then decide where you’re going to put your text in. I’ve found this image of a ruined wall, and after adjusting the Hue/Saturation (Command + U), and Levels (Command + L) using the values of the image below, our background is ready.

Step 2

Since the copper has green tones when it gets old (like the Statue of Liberty in New York, USA). We’ll need to add some green details here and there, Create a new layer and set this color (#1A3404) as the foreground, then using a medium size soft brush draw some spots. Next, change the "Green Spots" layer Blending Mode to Color Dodge.

Step 3

Press Command + A to select all, then Command + Option + D to Feather the selection 50px.

Step 4

Fill the selection with black (#000000) into a new layer called "Frame." Then go to Filter > Distort > Wave, and set the Max Wave length to 370.

Step 5

Now create a new layer, name it "Light" and fill it with a White to Black (#FFFFFF to #000000) Reflected Gradient. Then go to Image > Adjustments > Curves (Command + M) and set the curves just like it shows in the image below. Finally, change the "Light" layer Blending mode to Overlay. Keep this layer always above all others in the layers palette.

Step 6

Now begins the fun part! Write your text, I’m using Rockwell typeface, but you can use any other.

Step 7

Now let’s look at the creative flow of making a layer style. A good point to start is adding a Gradient Overlay matching the scene lightening. In this case add a five colors gradient (#000000, #160700, #783501, #421F01, and #050505) and an Angle of 140º. Also, add a 5 pixels Gradient Stroke effect using five colors (#803C17, #A44F30, #52230F, #52230F, and #381408) Angle: -95º.

Step 8

Now add the shadows, first an Inner Shadow, then a Drop Shadow, take special care with the Blending Modes of every Style. Both shadows must be in Multiply mode.

Step 9

Next add a Color Overlay effect (#742901), but set the Blend mode to Linear Dodge (Add). Then add a dimmed (Opacity 16%) Satin effect.

Step 10

This Step may be the most important one in this tutorial process. Add a Bevel and Emboss Style, Set the Style to Inner Bevel and Technique to Chisel Hard, this way you’ll get a sharpen bevel. Set all the values as shown below. Increase the Depth mode to maybe 715% and notice the changes to both Highlight and Shadow modes.

Once you add the basic Bevel style, mark the Contour checkbox and set a Gaussian Contour with a Range of 50%. Finally, mark the Texture checkbox and then set the "Rusted Metal" texture loading the default Photoshop CS3 Patterns library.

Step 11

Command-click the "Copper" layer to select the text. Go to Select > Modify > Contract and set 4 pixels (the Gradient Stroke size) and hit OK.

Step 12

Create a new layer named "Inner Effects" and fill the selection with black (#000000). Then apply an Inner Glow and a Satin style, using the values shown below. Finally, set the layer’s Fill value to 0%.

Step 13

Duplicate the "Copper" layer and name the copy "Text shadow," then delete or hide all the layer styles and go to Layer > Rasterize > Type. Put the copy below the "Copper" layer in the layers palette, then hide the styled text layer for a now. Apply a Filter > Blur > Motion Blur to the "Text shadow" layer. Finally, show the "Copper" layer again, select the "Text shadow" layer and delete all the top and right extra shadows.

Step 14

Let’s add some light rays. Using the Rectangle Tool draw four or five parallel rectangles above the "Light" layer. Merge them and Command-click the corners to distort them, as shown below. Next, apply a Gaussian Blur (10px radius). Finally, change the "Light stripes" layer’s Blending mode to Overlay and set the layer Opacity to 50%.

Step 15

Command-click the "Light stripes" layer miniature, then select the "Text Shadow" layer and delete the selection.

Step 16

Just to improve the lighting, Command-click the "Copper" layer one more time, but this time fill the selection with a White to Black (#FFFFFF to #000000) Reflected Gradient into a new layer just below the "Light" layer. Finally, change the Blending Mode to Overlay and Opacity to 25%.

Step 17

As a final detail, add a texture layer above everything else, in this case I’m adding this old paper sheet changing its Blending Mode to Multiply and it Opacity to 50%.

Step 18

A final tip, as this layer effect is ready to copy and paste in the PLUS file, you can use it on different typefaces or shapes. If you want to apply this effect onto a small object, it is better to create a big size text or shape first and convert it into a Smart Object before resizing it. This way you’ll preserve the aspect ratio of the effect.

Old Decorated Metal Text Effect

This tutorial explains how to use Layer Styles to create a metal text effect, and then add a very nice decoration texture using only a couple of filters, without the need for brushes or texture images. After that, some adjustment layers will be added to give the final effect an aged look.

The Final Result:

Notes:

* the software used in this tutorial is Adobe Photoshop CS5 Extended
* the size of the final result image is 1024 * 768
* you might want to check the Basix Page to see some useful topics on dealing with Photoshop basics, such as loading palettes and some shortcuts.

Resources:

* Untitled texture 66 by ~untitled-stock.

Step 1:

- Set the Foreground color to #919191, and the Background color to #493728, then, create a Radial Gradient from the top center of the document to one of the corners at the bottom.

- Open the Untitled texture 66 image and place it on top of the Background layer, then change its Blend Mode to Multiply and its Opacity to 70%.

- Create the text using the color #7b7b7b. The font used is Titania, and the size is 300 px.

- Duplicate the text layer, and change the original layer’s Fill value to 0%.

Step 2:

Double click the copy text layer to apply the following Styles:

- Drop Shadow: Change the color to #686868, the Distance to 0 and the Size to 30.

- Inner Shadow: Change the color to #634e38, the Distance to 0 and the Size to 10.

- Inner Glow: Change the Blend Mode to Luminosity, the color to #786450, and the Sizeto 18.

- Bevel and Emboss: Change the Technique to Chisel Soft, the Depth to 250, the Size to16. Remove the check next to Use Global Light, and change the Angle to 90 and theAltitude to 30. Also, change the Gloss Contour to Notched Slope, the Highlight Mode toOverlay and the Shadow Mode color to #7b7b7b.

Check this image to see how to load the contours if you don’t have them.

- Contour: Just choose Half Round.

This should give the text a nice metallic look.

- Now, double click the original text layer to apply a Drop Shadow. Change the color to#6d5b4a, un-check the Use Global Light box, change the Angle to -170, the Distance to10 and the Size to 25.

This should intensify the shadow around the text, giving it even more depth.

Step 3:

- Create a new layer on top of all layers and call it “Texture”. Press the Ctrl key and click on a text layer’s thumbnail (icon) to create a selection.

- Switch between the Foreground and Background colors, then fill the selection with the new Foreground color. Press Ctrl + D to get rid of the selection.

- Right click on the “Texture” layer, and choose Convert to Smart Object. Smart Objects preserve an image’s source content with all its original characteristics, enabling you to perform nondestructive editing to the layer. This simply means that we will be applying a couple of Filters to this layer, and we will still be able to edit the Filter’s values after applying them. This will come in handy later on.

* Notice the small icon that appears at the bottom right corner of the layer.

Step 4:

Change the values for each Filter as shown in the images below:

- Start by going to Filter -> Render -> Fibers:

- Filter -> Sketch -> Plaster:

- Filter -> Sketch -> Chrome:

- Filter -> Sketch -> Notepaper:

* You can click the small arrow on the right of the “Texture” layer to expand the list of filters used, and then double click on the name of any filter to change its values. You might need to change the values for both the Chrome and Notepaper filters if you are using a different font or size for your text, or if you would like to see how the different values affect the final result.

After applying the Filters, change the “Texture” layer’s Blend Mode to Multiply.

Step 5:

- Duplicate “Layer 1″ and drag the copy to the top. Create a selection once again.

- Click the Add layer mask icon in the Layers panel to create a mask using the selection.

- Create a new layer right below both text layers and call it “Shadow”. Use a soft round brush, around 40 px size, to create some shadow spots. The color is still the Foreground color (#493728).

- Change the “Shadow” layer’s Blend Mode to Multiply and its Opacity to 70%.

- Press Ctrl + T to free transform the spots, type in 45% in the Height box in the Options bar at the top, or any other value you like. Move the shadow if necessary, then hit Enterto accept the transformations.

- Go to Filter -> Blur -> Gaussian Blur and apply a simple blur to the shadow you created.

Note that you might need to do the previous steps on a separate layer for each horizontal line of text you have, then you can merge all layers in one layer.

- You can as well go ahead and erase any unwanted parts.

Step 6:

- Click the Create new fill or adjustment layer icon down the Layers panel, then chooseColor Balance.

- We are going to adjust the Highlights and Midtones values as shown below:

- This will add a vintage feel to the effect.

- Once again, click the Create new fill or adjustment layer icon, but this time choosePhoto Filter.

- You can see how the different filters affect the image, but right here the filter used is the Orange Filter. It gives warmth to the final effect.

- If the text seems too dark, you can go ahead and reduce the “Layer 1 copy” Opacityvalue. Here, it is reduced to 25%.

That’s it!

Ridiculously Realistic Scorching Fire Effect!

Here is a tutorial built in Adobe Photoshop CS3 that you can use to give your text a scorching reality. This can also be applied to other shapes. We thought it might be a cool idea to even apply this effect to a picture of a sprinter, we might do this in a tutorial down the road but for now we’ll stick to text. Also, we were recently contact by the guys at 10steps.sg and they have a tutorial that is very similar to this. Check it out here. Great minds think alike.

We will be using mixing flaming fire images with filters and other Photoshop layer blending methods to come up with something slick!

Preview of Final Image:

Create a document with a 300dpi with dimensions of 17 x 11 with a black background. Using the Type tool (T), select the font “Billboard” and type whatever you want to type for your fire text. We wanted to make sure that we knew how our type would look finished so we just typed and arranged the entire thing. As you can see below. After this, flatten the text layers by clicking them both in the layers palette (we have the “king” on one layer and “tutz” on another) and pushing Command + E. This will flatten them. This is what this step looks like:

Now we’ll use the marquee tool (M) to cut up the flattened text layer so we can apply different flame effects to each letter of the text. Simply select the marquee tool (M), drag a box around the letter “K”, right click, and select layer via cut. Do this for each of the letter so they are now all on their own layers.

We’ll start making the “K” look like it’s on fire. Right-click on the flattened K type layer in the layers palette and choose Blending Options. Check on Drop Shadow and key in the following settings:

Check on Color Overlay and key in the following settings.

Check on Satin and key in the following settings.

Check on Inner Glow and type in the following settings… choose a yellow that best suites you… here we used#e3bd29

We’re now going to rasterize/flatten the type layers but before we do so we’re going to right click on the flattened “k” layer in the layers palette and select Copy Layer Style. Then we’re going to right click on each of the other letter layers and select Paste Layer Style. This will allow us to transfer all of the settings to each letter. After this is done make a copy of each layer and hide it (this way we have a backup). After each backup has been made, flatten each individual type layer.

Using the Eraser tool with varying sizes and opacity fade off the top portion of each letter.

Go to Filter > Liquify. Select the Forward Warp Tool and key in the following settings. Using the Forward Warp tool, create some waves on the border of the type.

Now we’re going to add the awesome flames on the next page!

You can get the flame image from here: Shaedsofgrey. In Photoshop, open the flame file you just downloaded. Now, go to Channels tab and select the Green layer (if you can’t find the channels tab go to Window > Channels. Ctrl + left click on the Green layer thumbnail to load selection of the highlight areas.

Go back to Layers tab and use the Move Tool to drag any part of the selected area into the document with the “K” you did earlier. Place the fire above the type.

Using the Eraser tool with 15px, erase all the excessive fire, leaving only those parts that is waving around the type.

Duplicate the fire layer. Set the Opacity of the original fire to 30%. Set the Blend Mode of duplicated fire to Overlay.

Repeat the processes to cover the type with more flames. And there you got your first flaming type!

Create more flaming letters according to your own preferences.

Find a dark background to used. Resize and place the image into the document as shown below.

Create a layer above the Premade Background and fill it with #000000. Set the Opacity of this layer to 83%. Use the Eraser tool to reveal the top right of the image.

Create a new layer and name it “Glow“. Paint 3 huge red dot with the Brush tool (Soft Rounded) as shown in the screenshot below.

Set the Blend Mode of this layer to Color Dodge and Opacity to 16% and that’s it! Hope you enjoyed this tutorial!

Vice City features dozens of characters, many appearing only in the cut scenes which describe each mission. The voice-talent includes Ray Liotta as protagonist Tommy Vercetti, Tom Sizemore as Sonny Forelli, Robert Davi as Colonel Juan García Cortez, William Fichtner as Ken Rosenberg, Danny Dyer as Kent Paul, Dennis Hopper as pornography Director Steve Scott, Burt Reynolds as Avery Carrington, Luis Guzmán as Ricardo Diaz, Miami Vice star Philip Michael Thomas as Lance Vance, Danny Trejo as Umberto Robina, Gary Busey as Phil Cassidy, Lee Majors as "Big" Mitch Baker, Fairuza Balk as Mercedes Cortez, and porn actress Jenna Jameson as Candy Suxxx. The voice of the taxi dispatcher is provided by Blondie singer Debbie Harry.

Although the main character is not the same as the one in Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City contains a few characters from GTA III at an earlier point in their lives. Donald Love, a business tycoon in GTA III, makes an appearance as an apprentice to real estate mogul Avery Carrington. The one-armed Phil Cassidy from GTA III appears in Vice City as well, with both arms intact, and one mission actually explains when and how he lost his arm.

Several of GTA III’s radio hosts can also be heard in Vice City: Lazlow, who was the host of Chatterbox, the talk radio station in GTA III, is the DJ for the hard-rock station, V-Rock, in Vice City (he mentioned in passing in GTA III that he used to be a DJ on a rock station). Toni, the burned-out, female disc jockey of Flashback 95.6, the 1980s music radio station in GTA III, also appears as a young, club-hopping DJ in Vice City's pop music station, Flash FM. Finally, Fernando, a self-glorifying procurer of women ("not a pimp... a savior," he claims) who appeared on Lazlow's show in GTA III, runs Emotion 98.3. Also naturist Barry Stark, a caller for Chatterbox in GTA III, appears as a guest on VCPR in Vice City.

Gameplay

Because Vice City was built upon Grand Theft Auto III, the game follows a largely similar gameplay design and interface with GTA III with several tweaks and improvements over its predecessor. The gameplay is very open-ended, a characteristic of the Grand Theft Auto franchise; although missions must be completed to complete the storyline and unlock new areas of the city, the player is able to drive around and visit different parts of the city at his/her leisure and otherwise, do whatever they wish if not currently in the middle of a mission. Various items such as hidden weapons and packages are also scattered throughout the landscape, as it has been with previous GTA titles.

Players can steal vehicles, (cars, boats, motorcycles, and even helicopters) partake in drive-by shootings, robberies, and generally create chaos. However, doing so tends to generate unwanted and potentially fatal attention from the police (or, in extreme cases, the FBI and even the National Guard). Police behavior is mostly similar to Grand Theft Auto III, although police units will now wield night sticks, deploy spike strips to puncture the tires of the player's car, as well as SWAT teams from flying police helicopters and the aforementioned undercover police units, à la-Miami Vice. Police attention can be neutralized in a variety of ways.

A new addition in the game is the ability of the player to purchase a number of properties distributed across the city. Some of these are additional hideouts (essentially locations where weapons can be collected and the game saved). There are also a variety of businesses called "assets" which the player can buy. These include a film studio, a dance club, a strip club, a taxi company, an "ice-cream delivery business" (acting as a front company), a boatyard, a printing works, and a car showroom. Each commercial property has a number of missions attached to it, such as eliminating the competition or stealing equipment. Once all the missions for a given property are complete, the property will begin to generate an ongoing income, which the increasingly prosperous Vercetti may periodically collect.

Various gangs make frequent appearances in the game, some of whom are integral to story events. These gangs typically have a positive or negative opinion of the player and act accordingly by following the player or shooting at him. Shootouts between members of rival gangs can occur spontaneously and several missions involve organized fights between opposing gangs.

Optional side-missions are once again included, giving the player the opportunity to make pizza deliveries, drive injured people to a hospital with an ambulance, extinguish fires with a fire truck, deliver passengers in a taxi, be a vigilante, using a police vehicle to kill criminals, and the ability to drive a bus, transporting fare-paying passengers. Monetary rewards and occasional gameplay advantages (e.g. increased health and armor capacity and infinite sprinting) are awarded for completing different difficulty levels of these activities. Different sums of money are awarded for landing trick jumps in motorcycles or fast cars depending on the number of flips and height achieved.

CorelDraw's new Smart Fill tool, like Illustrator CS2's Live Paint, is clever enough to flood a region with color even when that space is actually the intersection of two overlapping objects. Smart Fill does not match Live Paint's ability to keep a region filled even when you reshape the objects that created it, but in many ways it's more practical, since you can apply both Smart Fill and all of CoreDraw's other effects, such as blends, bevels, and so on, to the same item. This isn't true of Illustrator's similar feature.

In earlier CorelDraw editions, you needed to use a separate utility to trace bitmapped pictures into line drawings; in X3, tracing is built into CorelDraw itself. I achieved excellent results with a little experimentation, though I found this tool unexpectedly persnickety. For example, the one-click Quick Trace option sometimes ignored large portions of images.
