Introducing my newest business partnership with Irwin Krigman whom I've illustrated a new book for, entitled Mental Health: You're Only Crazy If It Aint Workin' For Ya. The book encapsulates a humorous perspective on health and healthcare over the ages. This new health book can be purchased directly online
and shipped right to you. Many of my cartoons enhance various chapters throughout the book (about 50 total) and my cartoons were customized from rough sketch to all of the final art you'll see that accompanies those specific chapters.

Current Book Illustration Project

I was contacted by a pediatrician to illustrate a book cover for a project he's working on. After working out the formalities, he liked my samples I sent for the cover and a final peice was then selected for the cover design which I'm posting here. This book will be distributed in packages of baby formula, sold at outlets to be announced later and on certain websites plus through the pediatrician's website once he gets all of those details worked out with the publishers and distributors. I thought it may be of interest to other artists on how the final cover art was chosen. I was given a basic description of the book, along with the title and what will be throughout the book and I made some initial suggestions on my own and illustrated concepts based on what the pediatrician supplied me with. It went expeditiously well as I supplied him with a few quick images I enhanced with a bit of color to help make his decision easier, not to mention he's easy to work with. Were now working on illustrations for the inside of the book. There's going to be 20 total which I'll try and post samples here, as the project evolves, and I really liked his suggestion of us doing them in increments of 5 at a time. This spacing will allow a sort of breathing room and I think it will help the flow of concepts and shorten the time in getting from rough sketch to final accepted art for each image. I've always felt bogged down by creating dozens of images in a compressed period of time for a single project, and this "incremental approach" might be something other artists, illustrators and cartoonists may want to keep in mind when negotiating with your own project editors. The pediatrician writing this book emphasized "frantic parents" when creating the characters which was more than enough to go on . . . .

Finally after looking over the above rough sketches, we agreed on the final art and layout below. I asked the writer (Cliff) if using my own cartoonish block lettering would be better, or a chosen font I showed him in a mock up I made using Photoshop. He liked my samples of block lettering I showed and we went with that.

If I can, I'll post any samples for the inside of the book as we move through the project. Update: Was just informed the baby formula company that will distribute the book is Infamil, so I think the publication will get wide distribution. Whether the book is intended for corporate promotional packaging or will be in packaging to the public sector, I'm not sure. Cartoonist Robert Crumb Artwork Auctioned For Just Under $17K

Cartoonist Robert Crumb, who is the undisputed godfather of underground comics, recently saw some of his original art recently auctioned off for just under seventeen thousand dollars. I think this is unbelievable for many reasons. First, the dude is still alive and well and living in the south of France. the second reason is he doesn't honestly think his work is worth that much....in essence, he never grasped the commercial aspect of his cartooning style. He never embraced the commercialism of cartooning that most cartoonists aspire to and I think he should be lauded for this. Some call this peculiar, weird or any other type of strangeness associated to his talent. I really don't think so, I think he does what he wants and does it the way he wants to. Have a look at Mike Spicer - Celebrity Clerk cartoons on his site! He also has a ton of suff out on FaceBook and is constantly creating a steady flow of his full color cartoons! He even has cartoons on The Huffington Post! He isn't afraid to target celebrities ranging from Charlie Sheen to Ariana Huffington herself! Keep up the good work Mike and keep on cranking out all the colorful images - I'm sure alotta folks are laughing at, and enjoying your stuff....no doubt about it!

The availabilty of my daily web cartoon has recently been profiled via a press release on CisionWire's PR service. If anyone uses services similar to this, it would be good to hear your feedback. Press releases like this, go out to 9,000 recipients on the main Cisionwire service, and an additional 19,000 recieve the releases as an opt-in service. Once you get a cartoon configured for the web, and you make it available for webmasters and web site designers to use it if they'd like to, that isn't the only aspect of making and offering usable web content.
You certainly need to promote it in different ways. Write to web designers and webmasters of humor related sites, or designers who manage community related sites and even news-content web sites are ideal candidates for daily cartoon offerings. Type "cisionwire" into your favorite search function and learn all about this PR service that I highly recommend. It's main flagship is Cision, based out of Chicago who have affiliates worldwide that provide media contacts, feeds, news and offerings to the publication and print / news and journalism world. Some Cartoonists Cannot Express Their Beliefs!

Here in America we have 'Freedon Of Speech', although that freedom is greatly abused by many types, who have agendas. I try not to cross the line with my cartoons these days, and keep things in perspective. But when I read about how dangerous it is for some cartoonists to express themselves, I am very glad I live in this looney bin I affectionately know as America. Never take your rights for granted, but know there is a thin line you can cross if you really desire to offend any single person or group or God forbid . . . your government.

It's great to have other conscientious fellow bloggers take time out to mention you when you don't expect it and the props given are greatly appreciated! Beyond any doubt, one of the most if not the site for all things cartooning and cartoon related has got to be the Mike Lynch Cartoonssite. I frequesnt the various new topics and am amazed at how much time Mike has put in and devoted to my favorite endeavor - cartooning. You'll not only meet cartoonists up close, but get an actual history lesson on the business and goings-on in the world of cartooning. Most recently, the site profiled Saturday Evening Post cartoons from back in the "hay daze" of gag cartooning with actual scans of previously published panels that were illustrated by Harry Mace, Bo Brown, Tom Henderson, Taber, Gallagher and so many others it would take me more addendums to this blog post to fill. You simply have to go there and have a read through. It's spectacular.
