Stone & Beam Bradbury Chesterfield Leather Chair – $571.62 ($895)

That’s absurd.

Usually closer to a grand, this thing has to be an early Prime Day 2 deal. Haven’t seen it this low before. Ever. And under $600 for this beast (and it is a beast) is frankly a major steal.

Made by one of Amazon’s own in-house brands. Usually $800 – $100 and often out of stock. If you want a piece of furniture with presence, this will do it. It’s big. 39″D x 50″W x 30.3″H. Yes, fifty inches wide. It won’t be a good fit for small spaces. But if you’ve got some room, it’ll chew up the scenery with some old-school class.

Get out your tape measure. It’s not small: 39″D x 50″W x 30.3″H

The leather is impressive for the price. It’s not mega thick beefcake stuff, but it’s not paper thin (mostly) plastic gloss you’d find at some off-price/discount big box retailer. It has real visual depth and most importantly, feels good. Comes with free 30 day returns (although admittedly who knows how that would go, returning something this large.) It also comes with a 3 year warranty.

You will want to condition it with some Chamberlain’s Leather Milk conditioner once it shows up/occasionally thereafter to keep it looking and feeling good.

In stock. Ships free (yes really) with Amazon Prime. It ends up being delivered by either one of the big Amazon box trucks, or a 3rd party furniture delivery service. Tagged as a “Prime Scheduled Delivery,” they should call and schedule a time for an entryway-drop off. At least they have in the past.

It’s a chair that’s a legitimate investment for a lot of us at regular price, yet even when full price it’s significantly more affordable than other leather chesterfields out there. When it comes to leather accent chairs, there seems to be the cheap crap (mostly plastic, bonded leather) and then the mega expensive stuff (think $2000 – $4000 for one chair). This one from Amazon’s Stone and Beam brand appears to exist in the very, very rare middle ground. 

It’s fun. And comfortable. And looks great. People love it.

What are you going to wear? Sometimes it’s good to look at a few suggestions then add your own tweaks and ideas. That’s what these are for. So this is a weird one, but I’m willing to bet almost all of us have had one of these happen to us before, and thus, will have one again in the future.

The event in question is something decidedly dressy. A fundraising gala, a wedding, a cocktail party, or maybe it’s a nice dinner out meeting your significant other’s parents. But there’s no dress code stated, so it’s not specifically “black tie” only. It’s a little more down to earth than that. And someone (or many someones) attending won’t be dressed to the nines, and thus you don’t want to make them feel awkward. “Oh but I don’t care what other people think. I’M WEARING MY TUX.” Well then you’re a jerk. Because purposefully dressing in a way which makes others feel terrible is a real garbage move. Maybe it’s a future father in law. Or a groom. Or one of a hundred dudes in a dress shirt and slacks wondering how they got roped into going to this silent auction/chicken dinner fundraiser by their fancy-gown-wearing spouses. The Suit: Suitsupply Dark Grey Italian Wool Suit – $499. Or whatever your go-to, well tailored, charcoal gray suit happens to be. Trying to use something most of us have, being that a dark gray “should” be the first suit you buy. Going for low contrast for the entire outfit. Here’s your foundation.

The Pocket Square: TheTieBar Line Art Floral Charcoal Pocket Square – $12. A little visual interest thanks to the floral pattern while still keeping it quiet and dark.

The Shirt: Charles Tyrwhitt Hampton Weave Steel Blue Shirt – $33.33 if you buy 3 shirts and/or polos for $99. Low contrast. It’s almost a chambray gray, with a hint of blue. A bright white shirt would draw a little too much attention. Something dark and muted helps keep you looking incredibly sharp/evening-ready, but also not so stiff. Also worth a mention would be Banana Republic’s Premium Poplin in Navy (chambray?) in case you got one during their recent 40% off sale, or this darker option for $49.99 via Men’s Wearhouse. The Mega Splurge Alternative: Ledbury Slate Blue Heather Milo Custom Shirt – $155. That is a really, really, really nice shirt. Takes a couple of weeks to make since their made-to-order, custom collar/more precise fit than off the rack. Suggestion would be to go with the semi spread since it looks both great with and without a tie, and you could then wear it with jeans, sportcoats, blazers, as well as tieless with your suit(s) for other occasions.

The Tie: Tie Bar 100% Woven Silk “Grenalux” – $22. Not smooth satin. That’s too lounge singer. Get something with a little bit of texture like Tie Bar’s “grenalux” line. Or, if you feel like spending some serious coin, Kent Wang’s made in Italy Grenadine Ties are fantastic. Those run $75. If you want to have a bit of fun? You could always go with a bow tie, and fully blend the suit/eveningwear thing. No need to take it all so seriously.

The Shoes: Allen Edmonds Carlyle Oxford – $395. The Carlyle manages to be simultaneously dead simple and eye-catchingly contemporary. That’s a neat trick. Whatever simple black oxfords you own will work here. The Less Expensive Option: Nordstrom’s House Brand Cap Toes to the rescue, for just $99.95 with free shipping. Review here. 

The Watch: Orient 2nd Gen Bambino V III Automatic – $132. AKA the Bauhaus. Keep it slim and dressy. Shelve the chunky sport watch on a night like this.

The Belt: Marino Men’s Comfort Click Ratchet Belt in Dark Charcoal – $16.99. A ratchet belt that looks just like a regular belt. Comfortable. Dressy.

The Socks: Made in the USA Allen Edmonds Over The Calf Merino Blend Dress Socks – $22.50. Classic dress socks which will keep your feet comfortable as the night wears on. Made in the USA by Wigwam for AE.

About The Series: Double Time is for guys who like watches, but don’t necessarily want a big collection. What we’re going for here are two watches, at different affordable budgets, which as a team can fill just about any style need in every-day life. A casual watch and a dress watch. Those are basically the parameters. 

Made in Italy UNIMATIC UC2 Automatic Watch – $525

They don’t make them like they used to, unless it’s Unimatic. And then when you pick this thing up you think “I don’t know if they ever made watches like this.” It is SOLID. All caps. In bold. Feels like something Ron Swanson would appreciate, if he wasn’t already hand forging his own wristwatches in a waffle iron. Yet at 38.5 mm in diameter, it’s not some honking wrist-brick you would have seen on the likes of Arnie circa 2010. Assembled in Italy. Powered by Seiko’s NH35A automatic movement. Black matte dial. 300m water resistance. Double domed sapphire crystal. Easy to grip big crown. Super-LumiNova C3 pale green lume paint starts to reveal itself even in low-ish light conditions. Has a tendency to sell out stateside. Link above goes to Huckberry where they have a few left at post time, and Huckberry has a couple other models from the brand as well.

Orient Bambino V3 “Bauhaus” Automatic – $130

Looks substantially more expensive than its famously accessible price point. Simplicity. Class. Lots of clean space. Domed crystal. In-house, automatic movement. Maybe the best looking “cheap” dress watch on the market. Available in the not quite white, gentle silver dial shown above, as well as black, blue, and a sneaky handsome dark gray option. There’s just one small problem (for some). It’s 41mm. Which will fit most wrists just fine, but for those with slimmer wrists or those who prefer more classically sized dress watches, it runs a little big. Also, the strap width is a rare/odd 21mm, which can make sourcing after market straps a little difficult. But the matte brown leather band it comes on looks great, feels good, and wears just fine. Best Sale: Banana Republic’s semi-annual Friends and Family 40% off

Now expired, but holy moly BR actually ran a sale. And 40% off too. They hadn’t run anything substantial/site-wide-ish since (checks notes)… March. For long time customers a six month gap between BR promotions feels absurd. But that’s the new Banana Republic. Meanwhile, a gut feeling says they may not run anything substantial again until Black Friday/Cyber Monday. If then. Sign of the times. And the times have, in fact, changed. (And yes those two references span half a century of pop-music.)

Best Steal Alert: Anything priced in British Pounds / Made in the UK

Money. Bloody hell. Currency for some of us is one of the great unknowable’s, yet we’re glad it’s around all the same. Makes it substantially easier than bartering. Can’t keep all those chickens for trading. We’ve got a rooster in the neighborhood. Little dude is gonna lose his head if he doesn’t pipe down (most city codes ban roosters for that very reason). Know that it seems like brands and retailers are starting to compensate for the falling pound. The Loake Plimlico chukkas used as an example in the post are already up to $320. They bottomed out at $305, down from $340 over the summer. Forget dollars, what’s the chukka index?!?

Best Annual Tradition: Fall Temptations!

Fall is arguably the best style season of the year. Cool enough to wear layers and perhaps mix in some patterns, but not so bitter that the goal is to ward off hypothermia instead of looking your best. Every year we try to gather up what we think is the best of the best when it comes to new arrivals. Clothes, shoes & accessories, and outerwear. Know that since it’s all the newest of the new, it can take a bit for sales and promos to kick in.

Best SPLURGE Steal Alert: Hamilton Khaki Scuba 300m – $746.25 ($995) exp

Omega and Rolex looks, for 10% – 15% of the price. Swiss made. 300m of water resistance. 80-hour power reserve. Part of the just-ended Macy’s VIP sale, which weirdly enough saw that code apply to a bunch of Hamilton watches. Usually those are excluded. Tough to get a discount on Hamilton’s via an authorized retailer. Those are the shops that provide the manufacture’s warranty. Gray market sellers won’t do that, and often you can be up crap-creek without a paddle of something goes wrong.

Suiting “Style” of the month: Separates

• J. Crew Italian Wool Suit Jackets + Matching Trousers = $650 (was 30% off)
• B.R. Signature Italian Nailhead Wool Suit Jacket + Matching Trouser = $600 (was 40% off)

Whether it was the BR signature separates finally getting a discount during their Friends and Family event, or the J. Crew Ludlow suit separates also finally getting a discount during their semi-annual suit sale… it was a good month for those who prefer to buy their pants and jackets separately.

So what ARE suit separates? Separates mean you pick a jacket size and a trouser size individually, and the manufacturer has made the effort to make sure the fabric run is precisely the same for that inventory (there can be slight variations over large swaths of cloth). Separates break from the norm, since usually suit jackets + trousers come as “nested” pairs. Meaning you find your jacket size, and then the pants on the hanger on the ones you’re stuck with whether you like it or not. Most brands offer a 6″ drop with their nested suits. That means a 40R jacket comes with a 34 waist trouser, and then it’s up to a tailor to dial in the fit.

Separates are the choice for many harder-to-fit fellas. Big legs, broad chests, etc. Everybody’s body is different. Separates are a way to accommodate more fit profiles.

Most unnecessary “fix”: J. Crew’s New Dock Peacoat 

It wasn’t broke, but the “fix” sure might be. Looks like J. Crew changed their Dock Peacoats for this year. They appear to have chopped it shorter, changed it from an 8 button front to a 6, and ditched the pair of lower pockets. You may like the new version better. A lot of us prefer (greatly prefer) the old one. Review of the old can be found here. Oh, and the new ones cost $50 more.

Yes they’re anything but cheap. But they’re also anything but… cheap. J. Crew is touting this as their “big fall event.” And while the discount has jumped from 40% off (they were at 30% off over the weekend,) they’ve also now excluded suits, blazers, most of their shoes… and a heck of a lot more.

For every action there’s an equal and opposite reaction, right? Thanks Isaac.

*MEEP* … Okay so admittedly this feels like a bait and switch since they are decidedly not 40% off. But that’s just not gonna happen with their flagship chinos. These things are almost always excluded from sales and codes of any kind. Yet weirdly enough during this fall event they’re at 25% off. No code needed here. Hey, it’s something. Checker-stitch cotton shawl cardigan sweater – $69 ($138) 50% off

By far the star of the select 50% off section. J. Crew always comes out with a few shawl collar cardigan / “house sweater” styles each fall. And these all cotton ones look like they could be perfect for bridging the gap between now and when the snow flies. There’s one review saying it shrank significantly in the wash. The solution would therefor be to treat it like you would a wool sweater. Wash it only when truly necessary (see #1 here). And when you do, hand wash it carefully or dry clean only.

Made in Italy MacAlister Boots – $94.80 ($158)

There we are. About as good as it gets in terms of price for their basic Italian made desert boots. Above image borrowed from a recent chinos chukkas polo post. Also available in an “anchor grey” suede.

Nice timing now that we’ve hit October. More than a bit of a legend, the Sussex. A quilted, insulated jacket, that leans more heritage-sporting wear and less shiny-puffer.

In case you’re one of the many who has an unignorable “I haven’t tucked my shirt in for X amount of days since I’ve been WFH this week/month/year” alarm which often goes off in your head. It’s a blessing. It’s a curse.

It’s like one of those preppy mixed media/half leather half stripey or printed fabric belts you seen in summer. Only it’s for the fall.

One of their flagship products. No slims though. Classic and tall fits only.

Looks like team-slim-fit is drawing the short-straw here, because it’s only the straight fits that are getting the special 50% off bump. 40% off for J Crew’s slim cords is still very very good. But yeah. Looks like perhaps the straight fits aren’t selling quite as much as J. Crew would like, so they’ve got them at half off instead of the 40%. That’s speculation of course.

Merino Blend Shawl Collar Cardigan Sweaters in Navy – $88.80 or Marled Hazelnut – $94.80 ($148 – $158)

Why the price difference? Don’t know. Guessing the Marled Hazelnut’s fabric blend has more wool and a little less nylon or poly blended in. Both classics though. Kinda tough to go wrong with these.

Not a secret wash casual poplin, but not some super starched razor sharp dress shirt either. Best of both worlds.

Onion-quilted insulated bomber jacket – $74 ($148) 50% off

It’s good, just a bit boxy. Made for “transitional days.” A little less insulation and warmth compared to their Sussex jacket. They also ditched the standard ribbed waist you find on a lot of bombers. That look can sometimes cinch and ride up and look kinda funny, giving you a bit of a visual, cloth spare tire around the midsection. Not here. Straight hem. And it IS a straight hem. If you want to take it to a tailor, just make sure you’re wearing something like a sweater underneath. It’s a fall jacket. The risk is if you’re wearing a t-shirt you’ll have it taken in too much, and thus will render it useless when you want to layer. Size above is an unaltered medium on 5’10″/185.

Slim corduroy dock pant – $53.70 ($89.50)

“Refined” corduroy joggers drenched in fall-season-goodness. Corduroy has been swapped in for the usual french-terry fleece, the scrunchy elastic hems have been eliminated, and they’ve been made in a few versatile colors.

Lightweight Highland Skye jacket – $148.80 ($248)

Pretty much a Barbour (or any other heritage English sportswear/outerwear brand) homage. Lightweight though.

Garment-dyed corduroy CPO shirt – $53.70 ($89.50)

For those who want a “fall shirt” but don’t like the lumberjack-looks of flannel. 100% cotton corduroy. No slims here. Just classic and tall fits.

The colder, darker days of fall lend themselves to deeper, richer colors in our surroundings, clothing, and in this case, our personal space. A very recent style scenario featured burgundy, various shades of brown and blue, with a bit of gray and green thrown in:

Let’s use this fall appropriate palate to create a den/office that feels just right on a cold autumn’s night with a  “hot” beverage and favorite read:

The Arm Chair: Stone & Beam Westview Extra-Deep Down-Filled Accent Chair in dark grey top-grain leather – $444. How much? That’s steal alert worthy. This chair is deep, so better for average to taller guys, but easily made more comfortable for the height-challenged with a good throw pillow. Assuming this gray leather version has been less popular than other colors, because the brown leather version is more than double the price. If gray works for you, this is quite the bargain.

The Blanket: Wooly Mammoth Merino Wool Camp Blanket – $69.99. A bit more on the purple side of burgundy, but still, this is an easy way to work that deep red in.

The Side Table: Sloan Faux Live Edge Wood And Gold Metal Laptop Table – $129.99. From Cost Plus World Market. The “gold” in this table looks to be pretty matte, not a flashy metallic gold. A good reflection (no pun intended) of the khaki colored denim from the Style Scenario we’re basing this off of.

The Desk: Whitley Live Edge Writing Desk – $499. Looks and sounds (from reviews) like a pretty solid desk for the price. Has a mission style aesthetic, with solid mahogany construction and trembesi wood veneer, dovetail construction, and integrated power and USB plugins. But all that does come with a cost. If this isn’t in your budget, here’s an nice alternative from Target.

The Desk Chair: Costway Swivel Office Chair – $139.99 ($319.99… really?). Office chairs are one of those items that can be the ugly duckling when trying to create a stylish office space. Seems like the comfier they are, the uglier they are. Perhaps this is the final frontier in the home style world. Fortunately there are some affordable options out there that aren’t too bad, and this falls into that category. Simple, and lacking in the flashy chrome so many office chairs come with. Sold by Target.

The Rug: Safavieh 6′ x 9′ Vision Navy Area Rug – $180. Pulling the navy of the cardigan featured in the Style Scenario into this room. There’s a slight bit of striation to this rug, helping to brake it up and make it a little more visually interesting.

The Lamps: 12.5″ Matte Green Milo Table Lamp – $69.99 & Brightech Jaxon Floor Lamp – $99. A lamp for the desk, and a lamp for the floor by the chair for reading. The desk lamp has a lot of character and brings some green into the mix. The floor lamp is basic, but will provide what is needed: light to read by.

The Ottoman: Conte 26.5” Wide Rectangle Standard Ottoman – $111.99. Another shot of green, muted this time. An ottoman is necessary for maximum relaxation in any chair that doesn’t recline on its own. I think ottomans, like throw pillows, can be way overpriced, and this one is no exception, but it fits the bill.

The Mirror: Solid Wood Rustic Industrial Wall Mirror With Shelf- $145. A mirror and shelf all in one. Has a heritage woodsy mountain resort look. Hand made in Canada.

About The Series: Double Time is for guys who like watches, but don’t necessarily want a big collection. What we’re going for here are two watches, at different affordable budgets, which as a team can fill just about any style need in every-day life. A casual watch and a dress watch. Those are basically the parameters.

Orient Bambino V3 “Bauhaus” Automatic – $130

Looks substantially more expensive than its famously accessible price point. Simplicity. Class. Lots of clean space. Domed crystal. In-house, automatic movement. Maybe the best looking “cheap” dress watch on the market. Available in the not quite white, gentle silver dial shown above, as well as black, blue, and a sneaky handsome dark gray option. There’s just one small problem (for some). It’s 41mm. Which will fit most wrists just fine, but for those with slimmer wrists or those who prefer more classically sized dress watches, it runs a little big. Also, the strap width is a rare/odd 21mm, which can make sourcing after market straps a little difficult. But the matte brown leather band it comes on looks great, feels good, and wears just fine. Dan Henry 1975 Skin Diver Automatic – $450

Dan Henry has another hit on his hands. It’s both a total classic and oddly unique. The automatic movement, gilt details, speedometer looking seconds hand (which some may find to be an odd mashup on a diver, but it looks good from here), and brown rubber tropic strap all make for something you’re just not going to be able to find anywhere else at this price point.

It looks like a vintage piece (even the date wheel has gilty-gold-goodness), but it’s obviously brand new and ready to be put through some paces out of the box. 39mm case diameter is period-correct for the 1970s of which it’s pulling much inspiration. 24 Jewel Miyota 9015 high-beat automatic movement. 150m water resistance, which is plenty. Quick change spring bars and an available stainless bracelet for an extra $80 at checkout. High-domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment, but to be fair the crystal does pick up a bit of glare depending on conditions. Still very readable, but guessing it’s that high dome? Tropic rubber strap. Available with a date function, or clean & mean with no date. And if $450 is too spendy, they even make a quartz version. Those go for $290.

Total Cost: $580 (ish)
