The Mock the Week host has certainly nailed how to name his shows. Dara Ó Briain’s last tour in 2012 was Craic Dealer, and now he’s returned with Crowd Tickler, in which he envelops the audience in his nonsense from start to finish. His front row quickly become his playmates for a series of running gags; by the second half he’s chatting to a lady in the balcony about brain biology.

What distinguishes him from all the other fast-talkers? Partly, it’s that he really does talk very fast, often attacking his set like a racehorse commentator. In two hours of show, he probably delivers three hours of material. Also it’s his engaging style — not only that he talks to the audience, but also that he wrings empathy from them. A section on anthropomorphism is so neatly enacted, it will have you feeling sorry for a digger. As he describes having to socialise with the parents of his kids’ friends — that’s not a party, he says, “it’s a memory test with canapés” — the ground he’s on is familiar. However, the scenes he describes are often original and involving. He’s physically precise as he lets us in on the games he plays to survive, or mocks men’s fixations with stockings.

For the third distinguishing factor, the clue’s in the brain biology. There’s intelligence running through here, and among the everyman stuff he sneaks in facts about, say, helium gas and MRI scanners. Ó Briain is, after all, also host of Stargazing Live and, he reminds us in a self-deprecating moment, of a show about maths on the TV channel Dave. Let’s not over-egg this: he’s not majoring on the “geek comedy” that is becoming an ever-stronger genre, and neither is there an intellectual throughline. Rather, he’s producing relatable comedy that buzzes with emotional resonance and clever undertones. He’s 80 per cent crowd tickler, 20 per cent brain tickler, if you like, and it’s a hugely enjoyable mix.

Ed and Dara head into Guatemala as they continue their road trip, visiting Lake Atitlan to pay their respects to Mayan deity Maximon, exploring the ancient colonial city of Antigua and scaling the nearby active volcano Pacaya. In El Salvador, they learn first-hand about the gangs that make it one of the most violent countries in Central America, before they cross the border into Nicaragua, where they meet two Sandinista veterans who helped overthrow the Somoza regime in the 1970s.
