Class of 2009 Darden Students Baijnath Ramraika, Ravi Yekula, and Chip Ransler recently reached an impressive milestone, winning more than $100,000 in cash and prizes from business plan competitions. 

 Their “Clean India” business plan, which describes a for-profit model to treat and recycle contaminated water discharged by Indian garment-makers, has now taken first place seven times, along with a second-place finish in a major national competition in April.  Learn more.

Today the Darden Admissions Office released decisions for Round 3 applicants.  This was the most competitive Round 3 we’ve ever had.  If you were not offered admission, we encourage you to request feedback after June 1 and to apply again next year if you decide to postpone your MBA plans.

Amazon recently announced that it has selected the Darden School of Business as the world’s only business school to participate in a new Kindle education project. The project is a two semester pilot program in which students will use the new, upgraded Kindle DX—Amazon’s latest generation wireless reading device with a large screen—to access academic materials. The Darden School’s goal is to make the device available to two groups of students in the fall: one from the full-time MBA Program and another from the MBA for Executives Program.  For more information, read the full article about the project.

In the last issue of the Cold Call Chronicle for this academic year, Brigitte Donner (MBA ‘09) wrote a great feature titled “The Darden Class of 2009: Two Years in the Sunshine of Life“ about her experiences and impressions of her time at Darden. It is definitely worth a read!

While First Coffee often serves as a time for important announcements, awards, and cultural celebrations, First Coffee can also be a time to see a fun side of the student body. Section B surprised everyone yesterday morning with a performance of The Lion King in 20 minutes.  Section B is known for its strong traditions, including singing their “section song” every Friday when they have visitors and their mascot, “the bird.” According to Brigitte Donner, a Second Year student who was in Section B last year, “For years, the bird has been awarded weekly to the class member who makes the most amusing or off-the-wall comment of the week.  As tradition goes, other sections (possibly out of jealousy) try to ’steal’ the bird from the bird carrier.” If the bird is taken by another student, Section B is usually asked to do something in order to get the bird back. This time, they were asked to perform songs from Disney’s The Lion King in front of the entire Darden community at First Coffee.  Their performance was very entertaining, and luckily, they earned “the bird” back.

Twenty-six outstanding University of Virginia teachers were honored last night at a dinner in the Rotunda. Peter Rodriguez, Darden Professor of Business Administration and Associate Dean for International Affairs, received one of the All-University Teaching Awards. Congratulations!
