Due to demand from our fans without access to a local gaming shop, Daring Entertainment has released print editions of the popular War of the Dead saga at RPGNow and DriveThruRPG. Currently, Chapter One, Chapter Two, and Chapter Three are available for sale, and contain all 39 adventures to date. This version is the same as the version currently carried in game shops.

Order them now at the Daring Entertainment storefront

Lee F. It's a new year, and although website updates have been a little sparse lately as we work on getting several new products out the door, it's time we announce a few things on the release schedule for Daring Entertainment in the coming year.

War of the Dead: Chapter Four: First up on the schedule is the final chapter in the current stage of the War of the Dead setting. Chapter Four continues from where the previous chapter left off, and introduces the characters to several secrets of the setting. The full extent of the Federal Government's shadow war is revealed, the group learns more about Edward Russo, and more on the history of the Living Dead is explained. With the characters no doubt becoming Legendary rank early in Chapter Four, things also take a bigger turn as the characters become key players in the future of the Colorado territory.

Chapter Four is in the final stages of production, and will be releasing very soon!

Hellspawn: Countdown to Invasion: Next on the release schedule is the first book in the upcoming Hellspawn setting. Countdown to Invasion is an adventure book that introduces players and GMs to the initial super-heroic setting, establishing not only the player-characters, but also the various heroes and villains around them. Containing the beginning Setting Rules required to play, and taking full advantage of the Super Powers Companion from Pinnacle Entertainment, Countdown to Invasion throws the player-characters head first into the massive invasion by the alien Necroleans, and the transformation of humanity into the ultimate form of Living Dead.

Hellspawn: The full-blown Plot Point Campaign setting book, Hellspawn is set six months after the events in Countdown to Invasion. Included in this volume are: full Setting Rules, details on the various races available for play, new gear and equipment, new Edges and Hindrances, complete details on the Necroleans and the Hellspawn, and a plot point campaign with plenty of Savage Tales. The player-characters will be involved in a battle for survival against the alien invaders and their Living Dead armies, while at the same time confronting Earth's most powerful villains as they make bids to ultimately control the planet. In the end, the characters will be faced with a tough choice that could either save the planet and establish them as the paragons of the super-hero world, or plunge it into a final darkness. Inspired by the various mega-events and cross-over stories of the comic book industry, Hellspawn places the fate of the world firmly on the shoulders of the characters!

Other Books: While the above three products are currently nearing the end of production, we also have several others in earlier stages that we hope to release later in 2012. World of the Dead is a plot point campaign setting book that continues the zombie apocalypse several years after War of the Dead, offering a wider picture of the world and placing the fate of humanity in the hands of the characters. GET Into Action will be getting the full treatment, as we expand the setting into a complete plot point setting book. Daring Entertainment is also currently working on a space opera setting for the Savage Worlds system. And although mentioned for some time now, the Daring Comics Adventure Game is in its final design and play testing phase, and will be entering editing and the art stage soon for a 2012 release.

Finally, expect additional support material and adventures for both Hellspawn and War of the Dead.

While we certainly have other projects on the schedule, those are the ones that are safe to share at the present time. I'd also like to thank all the fans out there for your support, and the emails we receive asking questions and giving feedback. You guys have been terrific, and we look forward to giving you more fun games to play in the coming year!

The first is the Chapter Three (Week 12) adventure. The characters face a growing war within the prison, and things finally come to a head-- resulting in not only revelations about the prison, itself, but also the identity of the killer.

Also released today is War of the Dead: The Digital Dead.

War of the Dead: The Digital Dead is a ZIP bundle of POGs in PNG format (with transparency) for use with such online gaming systems as MapTools and GameTable, created and designed by Jordan Peacock.

The .zip file contains POGs for all of the flats from War of the Dead: The Paper Dead, plus some extras also designed by Jordan Peacock. Standard POG size is 128x128 pixels, scaled up for the zombie horde templates (Small = 256x256, Medium = 512x512, Large = 768x768) and vehicles (varies depending upon relative vehicle size; treated as if 1:72 scale).

War of the Dead: The Digital Dead is a free 9mb download.

Both are available, only at RPGNow.com

Lee F.
It's been a little while since I had an update to post. As some of you know from the Savage Worlds forums, I suffered a small injury that delayed production on a few products (though work was still moving along, nonetheless). That, coupled with the fact that we have several products in various stages of production for release throughout the remainder of the year, didn't give me too much to update for the front lines.

Since a few people have wondered if we are still here, though, I realized it was time to send out at least a production update.

First, and most importantly, yes, we're obviously still here. As a matter of fact, not only are we still producing and publishing, but we recently expanded and hired several freelance writers, artists, and an additional graphic designer! That's great news, indeed, as it allows us to get multiple products into production simultaneously.

So, what's in the queue?

War of the Dead: Chapter Three: Although delayed from its original, intended release date thanks to my injury, Chapter Three is in production and will be out before the summer. It picks-up a few weeks after Chapter Two, and continues the story as the convoy finally reaches Colorado. As can be expected, nothing goes according to plan in a world consumed by the Living Dead, and the characters find themselves knee-deep in trouble, especially where the other survivors in their ever-growing camp are concerned.

War of the Dead: Chapter Two (Print Edition): I'm currently reviewing the layout proof for the Chapter Two print volume, and should have it off to Cubicle 7 for printing and shipping very soon.

Hellspawn: What happens when an alien race bent on destroying all life in the universe, and returning it to the original days of darkness, arrives on Earth? The answer is the rise of the Hellspawn: a form of Living Dead, some of which retain the powers and intelligence of their former lives.

Hellspawn is a Savage Worlds plot-point campaign setting that combines the zombie-apocalypse genre with four-color comic book action. Designed specifically for Savage Worlds and the Super Powers Companion from Pinnacle Entertainment, Hellspawn sees the player-characters thrust onto the front lines to battle super-villains seeking to use the Outbreak as a means of taking over what's left of the world, old friends that have become Hellspawn, and the ancient alien race responsible for it all. Can you defend what remains of humanity and save the world from total annihilation, or will you fall beneath the might of your enemies and join the ranks of the Hellspawn?

Daring Comics Adventure Game: A new role-playing game using our own, in-house engine; the core system is already designed and internally play tested. Myself and a few others are now working on the system add-ons to finish fleshing out everything the core book will allow gaming groups to do, then it is off for external play testing. I'm hoping to have the book ready to print by the end of the year, but we'll see how play test goes. Once we are sure the system won't need any major rewrites, I'll start talking about the mechanics, options, powers, and all the extra goodies the game will offer.

And that's about it for right now. There are several other projects waiting to head out to freelancers, but those are the ones currently running full-steam ahead for release. Expect the print edition of War of the Dead: Chapter Two in stores soon, and the Chapter Three PDF subscription to be live before summer.

Lee F. As can be expected, we’re expanding and hiring freelancers. We want more writers and artists! Previous experience is always helpful, but is not necessary. We are a small company and know full-well that everyone must start somewhere. As long as your writing or art is professional, and you can meet deadlines, you have a shot at working with us.

These are contracted gigs, and payment is made upon your contract’s completion, regardless of publicaton date.

Artists can send us links to an online portfolio if you have one. It’s time to update everyone as to the state of Daring Entertainment and the plans for 2011!

First, let’s open with an important announcement. Daring Entertainment is expanding and hiring freelancers. We want writers, artists, and graphic designers. Payment is made once a contract is completed (not on publication, or by a royalty split), and anyone applying must be able to meet deadlines. If you’re interested, head on over to the contact page and drop us at line at the submissions inbox.

The 2010-year ended with no complaints here at Daring Entertainment. War of the Dead was a breakout success, more so than we could have imagined. The support and feedback we’ve gotten from the Savage fans has been overwhelming, and we look forward to continuing the product line throughout the coming year.

The past year also saw me expanding creative duties. Not only am I doing some editing for Triple Ace Games, but I’ve also been hired to design a FATE game for another company. Although I can’t say who they are or what the game is, I’m sure you’ll be hearing more about it from the publisher when the time comes.

And let’s not forget that 2010 also saw us form a partnership with Cubicle 7 Entertainment. Angus has been terrific and a pleasure to work with, and I can honestly say we have no regrets about the move. The support and insight we get from him is nothing short of fantastic.

So, what’s up for 2011? A heck of a lot.

Let’s start on the frontlines of the zombie war.

The most obvious is the second half of War of the Dead. The 52-part campaign goes into the home stretch with Chapter Three and Chapter Four. By this point, the survivors have been through hell, and now have experience to back them up. The final two chapters will see them become leaders of their own survivor camp, tie-up some storylines that have been hanging around since Chapter One, and introduce them to a major enemy that will be a huge player in the World of the Dead setting book.

After that, we have the World of the Dead plot-point setting. Set roughly a decade after War of the Dead, the World of the Dead book explores different countries and how they fell during the outbreak. It explores a world sent back into the dark-ages in many places, where people will literally kill each other for survival while the Living Dead vastly out number the living. Included in this book is an overview of different countries, full information on the United States, a customizable zombie creation guide for GMs, dozens of characters, vehicles, and weapons, and a full plot-point campaign with Savage Tales. Interestingly enough, sections on other countries are being written by some well-known Savage Worlds writers, each given the country they actually reside in. It’s going to be their job to show us how their respective nations fell during the outbreak, and what state they exist in a decade later.

Many people have written us about how much they liked Sanctuary in Chapter Two, and how they wish there had been more on it. Sanctuary was introduced in Chapter Two because story threads from that arc play a role in the second-half of the campaign. However, fear not, you will be seeing more of the fabled survivor kingdom and its internal war between UniMed, the survivors, the Ragers, and the Living Dead.

Coming in 2011 is War of the Dead: Sanctuary. This book is divided into two sections. The first half of the book explores and details the city, including maps, locations, other factions not mentioned in Chapter Two. The second half of the book contains a full blown plot-point campaign and Savage Tales that takes the characters from the first day of the zombie outbreak within the city, and all the way to its fall two months later. This will show an entirely different perspective on the outbreak and the fight for survival, and runs separately from the main storyline of the 52-part campaign.

Also coming in 2011 is the (currently untitled) super-hero/zombie setting for Savage Worlds. Using the Super Powers Companion from Pinnacle Entertainment, this book is a plot-point setting that puts the player-heroes smack dab into a world where the Living Dead have overrun everything- including the former super-population. While the book contains the normal information, such as a complete overview and maps of the city, background information, NPCs, and a plot-point campaign with Savage Tales, the information on the Living Dead and super-powers is the truly unique factor. What happens to a zombie that had Regeneration in life? What effect can a zombie have on the living, if it is a “thinker” and had Mind Reading or Mind Control while alive? Better yet, what can happen to a hero that uses powers like Mind Control and Mind Reading on the Living Dead? What about a zombie that could cause Paralysis when alive? How dangerous is that zombie now, since all powers continue to function even for the Living Dead?

Inspired by the works of George A. Romero and novels such as Ex-Heroes (not Marvel Zombies), can the heroes defeat the forces of evil behind the outbreak and save what remains of the world before it’s too late?

Late 2011 will also see the release of War of the Dead: Dead Reckoning, the showdown addition to the product line.

And finally on the zombie front for the coming year, Daring Entertainment is designing its own addition to FATE, sending the zombie outbreak to infect that game system. No promises yet, though, on whether that product will see release in late 2011 or early 2012. The FATE game is not a translation of our Savage Worlds products, and the setting (though the same) contains an entirely different type and style of storyline built to use the strengths of the FATE mechanics. The FATE game will be an all-in-one product.

In news not related to Savage Worlds or zombies, 2011 will see the release of the Daring Comics Adventure Game. Going into final play test within the next couple of months, I don’t want to say too much about it at this stage, as we never know what features might change during external play testing. The game will launch with the core rulebook and a full setting book, and already has several sourcebooks in the queue.

Speaking of super-heroes, Daring Entertainment has also been invited to publish material for both the BASH Ultimate Edition and G-Core game systems, both of which we have accepted. More on what products we will be releasing for those two games, and when, at a later date.

Naturally, there’s more in the queue, but we’ll announce them as the year progresses.

Have a happy 2011, everyone. Until later, I’m outta here!

Lee F. Life being what it is, the thread got delayed. Without further introduction, though . . . .

It’s difficult to say what goes into War of the Dead. To be honest, I’ve been a major Romero fan since I was about 10 years old. Over the years, I’ve read a ton of fiction from the genre, some good, most bad. For the good stuff, pick-up Robert Kirkman, Z.A. Reicht, Max Brooks, J.L. Bourne, Joe McKinney, and Jonathan Maberry (I highly recommend his “Rot & Ruin” novel). The others you can probably avoid, except to cure a bad case of insomnia, or if you want to read something that invokes an intense desire to beat the author about the head-and-shoulders for not even knowing the basic rules of the craft.

But, I digress . . . .

Anyway, I would say that Romero and the above authors have played a pivotal role in the whole “inspiration” process when it comes to War of the Dead, and the forthcoming World of the Dead.

To be honest, I have no intent to go through War of the Dead piece-by-piece. The thing is 52 adventures long, and I feel a work of fiction should stand, or fall, on its own. Not to mention, some of the homages in the campaign should be pretty obvious. After all, I didn’t set out to create a definitive RPG work on the zombie genre (even I am not so arrogant), or to reinvent the wheel or provide a completely new and unique experience. My goal was simply to create a story that would set the ground work for some of the elements in World of the Dead, make it fun, and make sure it had the elements common to the genre. Something familiar, as it was. So, if points in War of the Dead invoke thoughts of Kirkman, Romero, Bourne, Maberry, or other names from the list: good. I did my job right.

One thing reviewers and players have commented on, though, is the cruise ship beginning to the campaign. It’s been called “unique” and “does a great job of bringing the group together, placing them in a live-or-die situation, and getting them to work together in a natural way”.

Cool, I say, as well as: thank you. Truth of the matter, though, is that it was blind luck.

I mean, okay, I knew the cruise ship was a decent path for getting the group together in a hurry. But everything else is just the result of luck based upon a whim I had while working an outside job.

I worked for a private security firm here in Baltimore that had contracts at the Port of Baltimore, Courthouses, et cetera. One of my posts (prior to handling inmates at the Annapolis Courthouse) was guard duty for the cruise ships at the Port of Baltimore. One day while on post, several fire trucks and an ambulance burst into the area right after a cruise ship docked. Although I was at the front gate and didn’t know what was going on at the time, I later found out that a 17 year old boy suffered a heart attack and died on the cruise as it sailed back to the States. As it turned out, the family got off with the body at a different port, and emergency personnel weren’t aware that they were already gone.

The incident, while tragic, got my processes moving. I started thinking about what would happen if a zombie outbreak were to occur, and a person died on such a ship in the middle of the ocean, then rose and started enjoying the “all you can eat” of some 3,000 people in such a limited space. I know from talking to ship personnel the amount of security and weapons many ships do NOT have even in a post 9-11, overly paranoid, America. So, yes, creative license was taken to a large extent with Jason Kirkman and his people. To make matters worse, the lifeboats are not as easy for untrained personnel to lower as the average person might think. So, if the crew started dying off fast, and panic and pandemonium consumed the ship, and plans of escape weren’t created and implemented fast enough . . . survivors could find themselves not only up the creek without a paddle, but in the middle of the ocean, on a zombie-infested ship, without a lifeboat.

So, the first four parts of the campaign were a simple process jump-started by an actual tragic moment on a cruise ship. A man dies and reanimates, feeds and spreads the infection, panic and chaos ensue, the crew is taken out, and the characters are trapped.

Add in the elements of the ship’s owner and the mercenary team (a homage to the Stephen Sommers film: Deep Rising), and you have what, I hoped, was the making of a good campaign opening. Toss in a crazy, religious zealot (the obvious homage to Stephen King’s “The Mist”) and you have another complication.

From there, blend, season, and serve.

Next up, I’ll talk a little about the “human side” of the adventures, and tips to GMs for bringing it to the forefront in your campaign.

Lee F.
Zombie Santa is coming to town, and he ain’t looking for milk and cookies to eat! To distract the Living Dead fat-man, Daring Entertainment is cutting prices on War of the Dead for the holidays!

From midnight tonight through Friday, December 10th, we’re putting War of the Dead on sale!

The Living Dead Holiday Bundle contains the War of the Dead: Chapter One subscription, the War of the Dead: Chapter Two subscription, and The Paper Dead (a $53 value) for only $38!

But what if you already have one or two of those products and don’t want to buy them again? No problem! To make sure Zombie Santa stays busy, we’re also going to reduce each of those three products individually by $5 (the same sale price each product has in the bundle). That means a saving of $11 total on each Subcription (already reduced by $6 over buying the weeks separately).
