As much as I hate eating my own words the iPhone really has become a gaming platform. Sure there’s not that much mainstream support for it just yet but big names like Square Enix are already getting in on the action. Now, we’ve known about this Square RPG for the iPhone for quite some time but finally seeing the trailer for Chaos Rings really brings the message home: this is a true jRPG… for a cell phone. There’s the PSX-level graphics, the cheesy hair and a fair amount of belts on the clothes. Though I didn’t see many zippers there, so the jury’s still out.

Red Dead Redemption: Best Horse Simulator Of 2010

Rockstar’s next game, Red Dead Redemption is looking better every time I hear about it and they are apparently very proud of their horses. If they really can pull what’s basically a western GTA then this makes me only much more excited for L.A. Noire. Red Dead Redemption just looks like it would be fun simply to go around shooting stuff left and right. Or, you know, add some spaceships to it and a main character inspired by Nathan Fillion.

But this is Rockstar and there’s no PC version announced and that means even if they announced one it would be released sometime around the release of James Cameron’s Battle Angel Alita. For the Xbox and PS3 it comes out May 16.

Progress Wars Does Away With The Game, Keeps The Grind

From World of Warcraft to Farmville the vicious tentacles of the RPG grind now have hold of the most hardcore and casual of players. It seems like the lure of the next level is irresistible, regardless of the game itself. So why not then dispose of the game and leave only the grind? Enter Progress Wars, a parody pseudo-game that is nothing more than that: pure grind. Now if you’ll excuse me I gotta get back to my quest, I’m nearly level 50 and already wasted 3 mice on this.

Climbing The Japanese Corporate Ladder

I had heard the Japanese corporate world was harsh but this corporate ladder just got a bit too literal!

This TV sketch is basically just four guys trying to climb up a slimed up staircase for 9 minutes straight. As long as 9 minutes sounds I assure you, you will not get bored. Ladies, watch out near the end of the video as things get a little risqué and your knees might feel a bit weak!

Forget The Lolita, It’s All About Cats Now

Japan, land of great business: Mitsubishi, Toyota, Sony… and Cat Prin, leader of the cat cosplay industry. It’s apparently quite a boom in Japan to dress your cats, Global Post even has a galllery portraying the creations and models of Takako Iwasa, Cat Prin’s founder. In the slideshow I found something way more important than cats in costumes, I found out that 30+ year old cat ladies look exactly alike regardless of nationality. There’s just that crazy spark in their eyes that transcends race and religion.

Cat Prin also has its own english website, which is filled up to the brim with delicious engrish gems, such as:

“You need to dress a cat. And you will say to a cat together with a family. "It has changed just for a moment". [ "it being very dear" or ] You will pass pleasant one time.”

Believe me, if I try to put clothes on my cat the last thing I’ll do is ‘pass a pleasant one time’.

Lee Jin-gyu, a 28-year old Korean man decided to one-up pretty much every other otaku on the planet so he went ahead and married his Fate Testarossa body pillow.

The marriage ceremony was carried out by an actual priest but the marriage isn’t really official… but I don’t think I really had to clarify that, did I? Good grief guys, if this silly trend continues these crazy otaku will end up marrying something silly like… other people! Imagine that.

What happens when you mix one part Mythbusters, one part Home Improvement and two parts Japanese love for toilets? You get something like this. A typical Japanese toilet with a bidet wash system gets ‘enhanced’ with the power of a fire truck’s water hose. The ridiculously awesome contraption manages to get a fully weighted mannequin flying nearly 14 meters. More importantly though, the mannequin was as clean and refreshed as he’ll ever feel.

Ex-Salarywoman Turns Street Cheerleader

They say those who can’t, teach. Well apparently in Japan those who can’t… cheer. Japan Probe brings us this video of a woman who stands outside of Shinjuku station in Tokyo and cheers salarymen as they pass by. She’s even got the Cheerleader outfit and choreography and even a boom box. Apparently she once was in the ranks of corporate Japan but had to quit her job. So out of the outmost respect for those who can still run the rat race she sheers them on.

Really makes you think why did she had to quit her job.Also, what the hell? How does she get away with doing this? Does Japan have some sort of amazing unemployment benefits program or something?

Baby Chocobo Sings Its Own Theme

This is a couple of years old but still quite good. Fan made music videos usually feature the fans themselves playing the music, this time, it’s different. Here’s a cockatiel named Kame-chan who can sing a couple of videogame tunes. Up above is its rendition of the Chocobo theme and there’s also the Final Fantasy Fanfare and Saria’s theme from Ocarina of Time. It’s no time shifting bird, but it is quite something.

Portal 2 Officially Announced, Cake Still A Lie

It seems Valve has decided to make 2010 their year. Being one of the slowest moving developers out there they have in the very same month announced Steam for Macs and… as you might have heard today: Valve finally officially announced Portal 2 today. They ran a whole ARG this past week with updates to the game featuring hidden radio transmissions, encoded images and Morse code. Then they went ahead and updated the ending sequence of the game (which you can see after the jump).

Basically it all hints at Chell, the protagonist from the first game, being retrieved by Aperture Science and apparently the old rumors of the sequel having Aperture Science’s dead founder as the devious AI are true. What we do know is that all through this month a lot more information about the game will be released, that it will feature two campaigns, one for single player and one for co-op, that it will feature natural areas besides sterile labs and that the game will most likely be released this October.

That’s right boys, only 7 more months until we’re thinking with portals, once again. That’s already two big announcements for Valve and one must wonder if they’ll be going for the hat-trick… Yes, I’m talking about Episode 3 Valve, not going to be subtle this time. Where is my Episode 3, Gabe Newell?!
