held September 7, 2011, the Board of Directors for the Darke County Agricultural Society unanimously voted to have Board Member Keith Smith serve as Parade Marshal for the 2012 Great Darke County Fair that will run August 17 – 25. It is with deep regret and sadness that the Board will now have to honor and recognize Keith posthumously.

Keith became a member of the Board of Directors on December 6, 2000 when he was appointed to fill the unexpired term of Mike Rhoades through August of 2001.

During his 11-year tenure as a Director, Keith participated on the following committees: Beef Cattle; Draft Horse, Mule & Donkey; Grange; Swine; 4-H & Junior Fair; Grandstand Ticket Takers & Ushers; Dogs; Poultry & Water Fowl; Rabbits; Tractor Pull; Sanitation; Transportation; Cheerleading Contest; Motocross Motorcycle Racing; Speed; Audit & Budget; Rates; Ushers; Veterans; Executive & Legal; Southend Camping; Youth Building; Parking; Senior Citizens; Livestock Sale Committee; Gazebo; Rodeo; Awards; Capital Improvements; Promotional Advertising; Special Attractions and Tug-A-Truck. Keith also held the office of Treasurer in 2003 and Vice President in 2004 and 2005.
After an 11-month battle with brain cancer, Keith was 54 when he passed away Tuesday, October 4, 2011 at the Clare Bridge Cottage at Sterling House in Greenville. Keith was born November 3, 1956 in Greenville, son of Don and Marilyn Smith. A Veteran of the US Army, Keith was a 1975 graduate of Greenville High School. Keith had owned and operated Keith's Service and Towing and The Don's Pizza. Keith was also a former member of the Greenville City Council, a member of the Darke County Fish and Game Club, the American Legion Post 140, Masonic Lodge #143, Scottish Rite, and the Darke County Shrine Club.

Keith is survived by his wife, Laura (Clevenger) Smith; a daughter, Misty White of Greenville; a grandson, Isaac White; a step son, Levi Stump of Greenville; and brothers, Larry, Lonnie, and Kenny.

Keith will be remembered at the ribbon cutting to open the 156th Fair at 8am on Friday, August 17, 2012 and will also be honored during the annual Parade of Champions event taking place in front of the Grandstand on Thursday, August 23, 2012 beginning at 10am.

Additional information regarding Keith will be printed in the 2012 Great Darke County Fair Premium Book that will be available to the general public in late May or early June.

On February 1, 2012 Doug Steinbrunner, a wildlife specialist, from the Darke County Soil and Water Conservation District came to speak to the Ag Science II students in the Greenville FFA. Doug was asked to speak so that the students could learn more on wildlife habitat, and what we can do to protect it. This topic went along the lines of the wildlife unit currently being studied in this class. During the time that Doug spoke he informed the class on different types of native grasses, native wildlife, and other things that we can work on conserving and promoting here in Darke County and around the area. One important program that the students were spoke to about was the CP-33 program.

The CP-33 applies to many people living throughout Ohio, and other parts of the United States as well. It is where the government pays for land owners to plant wild grasses, have trees fallen, and let other wild plants to grow naturally and abundantly. This can in the long run benefit wildlife, control soil erosion, and protect water quality.

The students in the Ag Science II class at Greenville High School definitely learned a lot form Doug, and would like to thank him for his tremendous efforts and time to come speak with the class.

The Darke County Photography Club has continued to be active this winter with its events. The club would like to thank Troy Baker for teaching the workshops on digital cameras and Photoshop on Saturday, February 11. The workshops were a great success with many participants learning how to improve their photography skills.

The club also thanks John Cook for being the guest judge at the January meeting. Congratulations to Ruth McDaniel for having the Judge’s favorite in the theme “Toys” and Sue Ann Hartzell in the “Open” category. The next meeting will be on Tuesday, February 21 at 7:00PM at the Shawnee Prairie Nature Center.

This meeting will be busy with Julie Kessen from Granny’s Corner talking about matting and framing, nomination of officers (election will be in March), and the monthly feedback session with the theme “Purple”. Please bring a printed or digital copy of your photograph that best represents the month’s theme to share at the meeting.

Learn CitizensCPR, the hands-on only CPR, in just 30 minutes.

What a great way to beat the blahs of winter for a regular group of friends, your organization, your staff, a Sunday school class, a family reunion or your clients. Most people who survive a cardiac emergency were helped by a bystander. That could be you!

There is no written testing for CitizensCPR. It’s an introductory class, without learning of mouth-to-mouth resuscitation or AED usage. A trained instructor is provided and practice will be given on a special compression tool to insure that each participant is comfortable and skilled in hands-on CPR before the party is complete. We’ll come to your group or church or location.

All you need is an open room and a few participants. You can make a Valentine’s Day party out of it with some food or drink for after the class. Participants are floor taught with accommodations made for those with knee issues.

Another class that can be taught in 30 minutes is Disaster Preparedness planning with a Make-It-Take-It Kit.

This is a service of the Darke County Red Cross and a fundraiser. Free-will donations for the
Training/party help to support the mission of the Red Cross. This party class does not qualify for CPR certification needed for work or school.
Here is a perfect opportunity to get out of the house and learn something new. On Sunday, February 19, at 2:00 PM, Roane Smothers will discuss the documentary that describes the life and times of James Clemens and the Longtown Settlement, a multi-racial settlement on the border of Indiana and Ohio during the 1800's.

As an introduction to the Remembering Freedom program, Noel Rihm, a Wright State University student and museum intern, will discuss the insights that guided her as she developed the new Longtown exhibit at the museum.

Longtown was a predominantly African American settlement in Darke County that included people of African, European, and American Indian ancestry. The population included many freed or runaway slaves. With the establishment of a vocational school known as the Union Literary Institute, Longtown created an opportunity for African Americans to become land-owning farmers, craftsmen, skilled workers and professionals during a period when slavery and racism were prevalent.

All lectures are free and open to the public. However, regular admission will apply to tour the exhibit and museum which includes the outstanding Annie Oakley Center and CrossRoads of Destiny exhibits. Support for the Garst Lecture series comes, in part, from the Stephens Foundation.

The Garst Museum is located at:
205 N. Broadway, Greenville, OH 45331
(The Wellness Company) will sponsor a Community Fundraiser on Saturday, February 18th from 11:30-1:30 for the medical expenses of Cathy Eckstein.

Cathy, a long-time Darke County resident, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2009. Since then she has undergone surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation treatments. She will soon travel to Cancer Treatment Centers of America to begin new evaluations and treatments. Throughout her battle she has continued to be an inspiration and encouragement to all around her. If you have met Cathy, you can’t forget her infectious laugh or unique way of bringing a smile to your day.

Cathy and her husband Dennis are taking this opportunity to thank everyone who has been a blessing to them during this stressful time. We especially thank our friend Stephanie Lind who graciously coordinated this fundraiser with Melaleuca and Montage. Melaleuca is a global wellness company offering everyday consumable non-toxic and non-carcinogenic products. The Ecksteins know the importance of avoiding unnecessary exposure to hazardous household/personal care products.

Join us to learn how to redirect money already used in your family budget for these and other healthy products. Proceeds will be directed toward the Eckstein family medical fund. Enjoy a fabulous lunch and learn how to create a healthier home. Invite your friends, family and acquaintances.

The annual reports are due to the State Emergency Response Commission (SERC) c/o Ohio EPA, the Darke County LEPC, and your jurisdictional fire department by March 1, 2012. A filing fee is associated with the annual chemical inventory reporting and is to be submitted to the SERC only. Approximately eighty percent (80%) of the total fees generated under this program are redistributed back to the local LEPC for administrative costs and training of our first responders. These reports are required under Ohio Revised Code 3750 and failure to file can result in financial penalties up to $10,000 per day.

Who should file? The owner or operator of a company/ facility must submit a report when all the following conditions are met:

Facility is subject to the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard; and

Facility uses, produces, and/or stores a Hazardous Chemical and/or has an “Extremely Hazardous Substances” above the listed Threshold Quantity (TQ );

For Hazardous Chemicals the TQ is 10,000 pounds or more on any give day. Examples include, but are not limited to, gasoline, diesel fuel, Kerosene, Propane, Toluene, etc.

For Extremely Hazardous Substances the TQ is chemical specific. There are currently about 360 EHSs defined under EPCRA section 302, and the TQs and varies from 1 to 500 pounds. Examples include, but are not limited to, chlorine, ammonia, hydrofluoric acid, nitric acid, and sulfuric acid.

It is the responsibility of each business to know if they meet the above criteria for reporting. Please remember this information is vital in the emergency planning and response for Darke County and all of its residents.

More information is available by contacting Darke County LEPC at 937-548-1444.
(College Bound 2012)by: Elizabeth Horner

Why Creative Writing? A common question I have been asked as I get busy with college applications.

Here’s my thinking. Our body is made up mostly of oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, etc., and when we die, our bodies will decompose and become worm-food. I want something, SOMETHING I can leave behind that says who I was and what I cared about… and share the knowledge I have gained in life with the next generations.

I believe that written works can be very powerful --- the author’s thoughts and feelings, even if he has been buried hundreds of years in the past, can continue to effect change, shape the present world, and set new things in motion.

I look forward to learning from the best educations in the field as I pursue a career that will advance my passion for written works. I want, primarily, to be an author of fiction books and continue to expand my opportunities to write newspaper columns. My first published article was at age 9, when the then editor of the Daily Advocate Newspaper in Greenville, Ohio, Mr. Bob Robinson approached me for an article. He wanted a youth’s perspective on Independence Day. My article became the lead story, top half of the front page of the newspaper’s “Special Independence Day Edition” in 2003. I never stopped writing since then.

While I am interested to test my skills in various genres such as producing a movie script, psychology and history books, I must profess my love for fiction. Why creative fiction writer? What is it about the world of make-believe that draws me closer to it than becoming a journalist or biographer?

I believe that it is very hard to be impartial in writing. There have been many books written about Christopher Columbus. Some paint him as a hero, the explorer that opened the door to American democracy, yet to others he was just another misguided idiot, who spent his dying days still believing he had found a western route to the Indies . There's probably some truth to all those claims. The crew of the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria all had flaws, just like the people sitting in comfy chairs centuries later who felt they had the right to write about them. There is none of that confusion in fiction. The author is "god" of his own universe and is therefore able to speak basic human truth, disguised as fantasy. Orson Scott Card said it best: "I think that most of us, anyway, read these stories that we know are not 'true' because we're hungry for another kind of truth: the mythic truth about human nature in general, the particular truth about those life-communities that define our own identity, and the most specific truth of all: our own self-story….”. And if my dream becomes reality, I hope to unveil my first fictional novel, “The Problem with the Prophecy” hopefully as I head to college in 2012.

The 2012 GGSA/GCBL Cornhole Tournament is scheduled to be held Saturday, February 25th, at Paws Bingo Hall in Greenville. The tournament has become one of the best in the area and is a major lure for some of the top players in the region. Last year many of the top ranked players in the nation competed for the coveted $1,000 doubles purse. The tournament is a good fundraiser for both the Greenville Girls Softball Association and the Greenville Citizens Baseball League who have combined forces to put on the tournament for what will be a fourth straight year. If you are a cornhole player or would like to see some very good players toss, Paws Bing Hall will be the place to be on February 25th.

The format has changed a little this year as the singles tournament will be held first, followed by the doubles tournament. Sign-in begins at 11:00 AM with the first toss for the singles tournament being at 12:00 Noon.

Doubles sign-ins also begin at 11:00 AM and will be taken throughout the singles event up until 2:45 PM. First toss for the doubles tournament will take place at 3:00 PM or when the singles tournament is complete.

Entry fee for the doubles tournament is $40 per team while the singles tournament entry fee is $20 per individual. Doubles tournament payout is a $1,000 guaranteed purse while the singles tournament payout will be based on a 75% payout formula.

If you or your business would like to help sponsor this event please contact any officer or trustee from either GGSA or GCBL.

Ethics in Political Office will be the subject Susan Willeke will address at 6 p.m. on Thursday, February 23 at the American Legion on Ohio Street. Susan is with the Ohio Ethics Commission and brings new insights to the long standing push for better ethics in politics.

The League of Women Voters of Darke County is sponsoring this event as part of its on-going goal of citizen education. Concerns about ethics in politics and political office are not confined to just one level of government. Local, state and federal levels of government are suspect from time to time. With more knowledge, each citizen can be part of the move to provide our community, state and nation with a more ethical government.

Ms. Willeke, who is the Education and Communications Administrator for the Ethics Commission, will answer questions from the audience as part of the presentation. Susan is a Summa Cum Laude graduate of Ursuline College in Pepper Pike, Ohio and has extensive experience working in various capacities in government.

The League of Women Voters of Darke County hope all who are genuinely concerned about honesty and integrity in government offices will attend. The evening should be informative and and instruct citizens on the laws provided to safeguard against unethical practices among our government officials and employees.
Family Theater Series programs are presented at St. Clair Memorial Hall and are open to the public. Programs are generally based on children’s literature; ticket prices are just $5. Through Arts In Education, and in conjunction with local schools, performing artists are annually taken to each grade of every public school in Darke County, ensuring that children in the community have the opportunity to learn and grow through the arts. According to DCCA Executive Director Julie Strait, “DP&L Company Foundation’s support of children’s programming makes it possible for us to present wonderful, creativity enhancing Family Theatre Series programs at an affordable ticket price, and enables all Darke County public school students to experience a culturally enriching artistic program each year.” Strait continued, “DCCA thanks Ginny Strausburg, Executive Director of the Dayton Power and Light Company Foundation for their strong support of the arts; we are absolutely thrilled to see the children in our community receive the benefit of their generosity.”

DCCA’s 2011/2012 Family Theatre Series includes three performances; Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia presented Goodnight Moon and The Runaway Bunny on November 20, 2011. Coming up on Sunday, March 25 at 2:00 pm is Theatre IV’s reproduction of the classic A.A. Milne book, The House At Pooh Corner, featuring our dear friends from the Hundred Acre Woods. The final show of the season will be Wizard of Oz on Sunday, May 6, at 2:00 pm. Amercian Family Theatre’s lavish production of this perennial favorite will lead families on an adventurous journey with Dorothy through the magical Land of Oz as she and her friends discover the magic that lies within themselves. Family Theatre Series shows take place at St. Clair Memorial Hall in Greenville, tickets are $5 and are available at Readmore’s Hallmark in Greenville, Worch Memorial Public Library in Versailles, and by contacting DCCA at (937) 547-0908 or DCCA@CenterForArts.net. Tickets will also be available at the door the day of the performance.

Arts In Education programs for 2011/2012 included Kuniko Yamamoto sharing magical Mask, Mime and Music of Japan with students in grades K through 3. Lyle Cogen presented Sticks And Stones, a drama/musical production, helping students in grades 4 through 6 meet the challenges of bullying. Post Comedy Theatre, featuring improvisational comedian extraordinaire Robert Post, entertained and educated students in grades 7 through 12 on the intricacies, work, and talent that goes into a successful comedic production. Arts In Education artists are generally in residence for a week as they tour all of the eight public school districts in Darke County.

The Workshop Learning Center, located at 213 Walnut Street in Greenville, announces two new programs to continue to help the students of Darke County achieve academic success. The Workshop Learning Center currently offers private academic tutoring, private music lessons, and test prep classes. They will begin offering an after-school study skills program for students who need help organizing, completing and studying for schoolwork. The study skills program is designed to help students learn essential time-management and self-discipline skills so they can achieve their academic goals.

The Workshop Learning Center is also offering an Alternative Education program. This unique program combines the flexibility of an online school with the structure and support of a personal tutor. Students who attend will have the opportunity to complete their online classes in a small group environment three days a week, allowing them to work independently and still have the instant feedback on questions and assignments that a live tutor can provide. Space is extremely limited for this one-of-a-kind program. Call 937-459-5937 now to discuss the possibilities.

“We are excited to add these programs to our growing list of educational services,” says director, Michelle Drees. “It is amazing to see the academic achievements of our students. Each new student brings a new opportunity for success.” For more information call 937-459-5937 or visit the website www.theworkshoplc.com.

With the continued growth of current and new offerings, The Workshop Learning Center is looking for student-oriented, part-time tutors. Applicants MUST have previous experience working with school-aged children. State certification and/or math specialty are preferred. Background check is required. Availability of at least two evenings a week is a must. We are also looking for guitar, piano, voice and band instrument instructors as well (one night a week). Qualified applicants ONLY can email resumes to employment@theworkshoplc.com or drop it off on Saturday, February 11th or 18th between 9 - 11am. Please no phone calls.
The Y also has class offerings that will boost your spiritual and mental fitness.

The YMCA of Darke County is pleased to announce the formation of a faith-based book club. Led by Tim and Krista Swensen, this group will dive into a different book each session. The book for Winter II session is Disappointment with God by Philip Yancey. Philip Yancey has a gift for articulating the knotty issues of faith. In Disappointment with God he poses three questions that Christians wonder but seldom ask aloud: Is God unfair? Is He silent? Is He hidden? This insightful and deeply personal book points to the odd disparity between our concept of God and the realities of life. Why, if God is so hungry for relationship with us, does He seem so distant? Why, if He cares for us, do bad things happen? What can we expect from Him after all? Yancey addresses these questions with clarity, richness, and biblical assurance. He takes us beyond the things that make for disillusionment to a deeper faith, a certitude of God's love, and a thirst to reach not just for what God gives but for who He is. This class is open to members and non-members and will be meeting on Tuesday evenings at the Greenville Y from 6:45-8:00 PM. The only cost associated with the class is a $10 book fee but feel free to purchase the book on your own or even download it to an electronic reader. The first class will be Tuesday, February 21st.

Another class offering is Made to Crave by Lysa TerKeurst. Made to Crave is the missing link between one’s desire to be healthy and the spiritual empowerment necessary to make that happen. The reality is we were made to crave. Craving isn't a bad thing. But we must realize God created us to crave more of Him. Many of us have misplaced that craving by overindulging in physical pleasures instead of lasting spiritual satisfaction. If you are a woman struggling with unhealthy eating habits, you can break the 'I'll start again Monday' cycle, and start feeling good about yourself today. Learn to stop beating yourself up over the numbers on the scale. Discover that your weight loss struggle isn't a curse but rather a blessing in the making, and replace justifications that lead to diet failure with empowering go-to scripts that lead to victory. You can reach your healthy weight goal -- and grow closer to God in the process. This is not a how-to book. This is not the latest and greatest dieting plan. This study is the necessary companion for you to use alongside whatever healthy lifestyle plan you choose. This is a Bible study to help you find the 'want to' in making healthy lifestyle choices. This study is open to members and non-members and will meet on Thursday evenings at the Greenville Y from 5:30-7:00 pm. The cost for this class is $10 for the book and $10 for the workbook. The first class will be Thursday, February 23rd.

Lastly, the Y has two American Sign Language options for the Winter II session. Beginner’s Sign Language will be an introduction to American Sign Language. It will teach participants to communicate in the manual-visual mode, followed by instruction and practice in simple vocabulary, sentence structure, elementary conversation, and deaf history and culture. This class is open to members and non-members and will meet on Monday evenings from 7:00-8:00 pm. Cost for this class is $30 which covers handouts and materials. The Y also will offer Little Smart Hands which is a baby sign language class. In a playful, educational and language-rich environment, parent and child will build their American Sign Language (ASL) vocabulary through instruction, interactive games and songs. You will learn recommended first signs; we will discuss the benefits of using ASL with infants and demonstrate easy techniques for successfully integrating signs into everyday life. Little Smart Hands will meet on Thursday evenings from 6:30-7:30 pm. This class is available to members and non-members and is $30 per family.

Registration for all Winter II class offerings begins on Monday, February 13. The Winter II Program Session begins on Monday, February 20. For more information or a complete listing of the Y’s offerings, visit us online at www.ymcadarkecounty.org or call the Y at 548-3777.

The YMCA of Darke County is a non-profit membership association of over 4,800 members with facilities in Greenville and Versailles. The mission of the YMCA of Darke County is to develop the whole person – spirit, mind and body – through character development programs that reinforce Christian principles and that build strong kids, strong families and strong communities.

It's a nice expanded, informative read, that elaborates on the disctrict's protocol for these types of sitations. In short, since no bed bugs were found in a classroom setting, the student and the student's locker were inspected and only the parents of the child were notified. Notifications to all parents would occur had they been found in any classroom settings.

In addition to notifying everyone once the health department confirmed the areas as clear of any infestation, the district has hired an exterminator to spray the two rooms where the affected students have class, going above and beyond accepted measures to ensure a clear learning environment.

We have picked up many new riders and we want to welcome them to the transit. This February some of the Drivers will be going through four hours of extensive classroom re-training on the following subjects: LLLC (Look Ahead, Look Around, Leave Room, and Communicate); Intersections; Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety, and Mirrors and Reference Points. This training will include the General Manager riding along with the drivers and evaluating them in these areas throughout the month of February. During the ride along, the drivers will also be evaluated on how they load and unload mobility device riders and the proper use of the lift. MV Transportation, the company that operates the Greenville Transit System, puts great emphasis on driver training and rider safety.

On February 20, 2012, GTS will be closed for Presidents Day. We will re-open on that Tuesday.

Some things to remember that will make riding the Greenville Transit System easier:

If possible, call ahead to book your appointments.

If you are new to the system, we will need your name, date of birth, address and any special needs that you may require. (Lift, help in bus, etc.).

We require that all wheelchairs and other mobility devices be secured by the four point floor tie down system and the lap and shoulder belts. Posey Belts are used but not required.

GTS is a “curb to curb” system. We can assist the rider if it is requested ahead of time. Personal Care Assistants ride free and are recommended for helping with wheelchairs and scooters.

Grocery shopping bags are limited to what each person can carry on their own and must be under the control of the rider while on the bus.

Riders pay the driver as they get on the bus. Chances are you will not be the only one riding the bus. The drivers will be picking up and dropping off several people as they go throughout their day as we are considered a “shared service”.

Have correct change. The drivers do not carry a lot of cash with them. (Fares are $1.50 for Elderly/disabled and $3.00 for the general public.) We will go five miles outside the city limits. The cost is the city rate plus an additional $1.00 per loaded mile.

Our hours of operation are Monday – Friday 6:00a.m. to 7:00 p.m; Saturday is 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Sunday is 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Greenville Transit System is owned by the City of Greenville and operated by MV Transportation. It is funded by grants from ODOT, FTA, the City and by rider fares. For more information about GTS, call Pam Garland, City Transportation Director or Kathy Cool, General Manager at (937)548-0437 or to book a ride on the transit, call (937)547-1811.
We’ll learn what you can do to make sure you don’t find yourself in a survival situation and then we’ll make a basic kit for when things go wrong.
