We started out late last night so we missed our NYC Dads Meetup and the kids favorite AMNH. But as you can see the boys had a great time. We had to stop at the on our Wall Street office to pick up some very important mail first. As we rode the subway on our way to the balloon inflation event James decided he'd take some pix. Our little paparazzi in training:

Fall Flavors at The Farmers Market

The boys and I went to the Farmers Market in the Lower East Side and it was so much fun. Our journey today was to get fresh fruits and vegetables so James said, "Let's go to a Farmers Market." That sounded like a splendid idea. We all got dressed and headed to the car. Now which one would we go to? Fortunately we have a pleathorah of choices in NYC. We started out to Long Island to the Garden City one but they closed at 1pm so our adventure started a little late to drive there and have time to shop at our leisure. OK plan B. Manhattan.

The only problem would be parking. We love the Union Square Market but there is no where to park and I have the 3 boys in tow. Maybe the City Hall Market. We have never been and could probably park close to the FDR. As we started to drive through Brooklyn we were singing our Chinese children's songs from a CD from the boys' school as it started to rain. We had umbrellas and in the past the Markets were prepared for rain but we decided that maybe we should go to a market that was opened late just in case they decided to close early due to the rain.

We ended up in the Lower east side at St. Mark's Church in the Bowery 131 East 10th St. The parking angels provided a perfect spot on the side of the block. We did not have a huge variety of farmers but we had tons of fruit and vegetables to choose from. The boys were so excited. Jon Luc picked apples. I let him put them in our apple bag. James saw leeks and wanted to try them. We are not vegetarians but we are blessed to have children who love vegetables so we go meatless often. I had not intended to get soo many veggies at one time but we found out it was the last day for this market so the deals were amazing. Our bounty: A beautiful squash, apples,broccoli, cauliflower, leeks, tomatoes, onions, baby bok choy, carrots, lettuce, kale and a beet. As soon as we made it to the car we washed some apples and proceeded to make plans for the wonderful dishes we could prepare like apple juice, apple pie, carrot juice and carrot cake, asian inspired soups and stirfry. Not sure about the squash yet.

Martha Stewart, Food Network, Epicurious and Allrecipies here we come. Off to see the Happy Turkey Day!

After a long hard day of Lil' Parkies, cooking, cleaning and Violin lessons in midtown we realized we missed the Food Day tweets. Activities around the USA were organized today from fall festivals to movie screenings. Today was the launch of the new website NYC FOOD.

We are exhausted but came home to whip up some wholegrain pasta with corner on the cobbs and homemade tomato sauce that we all sat and ate together at the nook. Apple slices for dessert. Mmmmmmmm good.

Join us for The Big Draw this Saturday, October 15 at Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian in New York!

Artist Maria Hupfield will lead drawing activities as the renowned Thunderbird Native American Dancers, led by Louis Mofsie, perform traditional dances to the music of The Heyna Second Sons Singers. Both Mofsie and dancers will provide explanation of the dances and songs, as Hupfield presents drawing activities that explore how sound and movement can be captured through mark, gesture, and imagery.

Express your creativity through this inventive, site-specific drawing project. All ages invited, no experience necessary!

Admission to The Big Draw is FREE and all drawing materials are provided!

Friends of Morningside Park Fundraiser: Seeds for Renewal

Morningside Park is located in New York City's borough of Manhattan from West 110^thto West 123^rd Streets between Manhattan Avenue, Morningside Avenue and Morningside Drive. It is one of four Historic Harlem Parks. The park was designated as a NYC Scenic Landmark in 2008. It is the first Historic Harlem Park to receive this designation and the first NYC park to be designated since 1983.

The City received jurisdiction over the 30-acres property in 1870 and began constructing the park in 1883. The original plans for the park were drawn up by renowned park designers Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux.

We arrived, signed in on the NYC Parks Department confidential information sheet, as we were also handed a coloring kit containing numbers and alphabet trace characters, so Jon Luc and I sat right down and began the process of sorting through all the materials.

Once sorted, we were also handed crayons, which lit Jon Luc's face like Christmas morning, as he dug right in, coloring.

The group later sang and danced to: Skip To My Luc, London Bridge, and other pre-school classics, which included a rousing rendition of Head and Shoulders, Knees and Toes.

Arts & crafts created a felt-like puppies dog and kitty cat. Jon Luc made two friends.

Ms. Vinnee (pronounced Vin-Nay), our teacher, then placed a near life-sized blank person-like paper figure in front of each child to color and decorate. 12:00 came too soon. This was a great way to start our day. Wednesday, we'll come prepared for messy work, ask Ms. Vinnee says, we'll be painting and planting.

Oh boy!

Situated just south of Jamaica’s central business district, Detective Keith L. Williams Park is popular spot in the Queens neighborhood of Jamaica.

The pool, running track, handball courts, and tennis courts are very popular. The fun doesn't end when it gets cold outside—the recreation center offers programs all year round.

Darleen & Gregg decided to start this indoor/outdoor play group when other play groups in the Metro NYC area were full, and/or just did not exist.

"Kids need to play and be aware of their environments" as there are similar programs of play existing in Asia, Africa, Scandinavia and Sweden.

The purpose of the group is to expose your child/children to a cornucopia of creative arts & crafts, physical activities, socio-dramatic play, LOTE (language other than english), games, dance and much, much more.

This is a full phledged indoor/outdoor child development play group experience focused on child/children 2-4yrs of age.

We look so forward to sharing this fun and educational playgroup environment with you and your special child/children.

Labor Day and Back to School

Happy Labor Day families. We are really excited and sad that summer is almost over. Schools have begun for some and will start soon for others. Our boys have never stopped. The beauty of homeschooling is not having the rush of back to school shopping. We are actually going to our Not Back To School Picnic on September 8, 2011, in Central Park.

Since JC just turned one last week and is literally running around the house now we are all a little tired and have made no plans today. We will get hungry so I must look for a BBQ. As I was looking through my emails I saw this Back To School Celebration at Habana Outpost

Time to Play had a guest blogger from FireHydrant Creative Studios in which they talk about the merits of educating through play. My boys have recently joined a 'Sociodramatic Playgroup'. Each week the Mom who leads the group sends out an email blast to the group with the next class' prop list and ideas for the next adventure. the kids have the chance to develop the story, take roles, etc.

I would like to put together a play group for kindergarteners (I've been inspired by "A Child's Work" by Vivian Gussin Paley). I am finding it challenging to find opportunities for my son to participate in sociodramatic play, since most of the children in our neighborhood attend school, and thus are unavailable for play during daytime hours. Age 5 to 6 is supposed to be a peak time for this kind of play. The kids are able to develop very complex and imaginative plots and storylines.

What I had in mind was to host a small group of five-year-olds at my home. I would facilitate a theme to help the play take off - for example, submarine, spaceship, treasure hunt, museum, post office, garden, etc. (Many of these ideas come from a book titled "Make Believe Games and Activities for Imaginative Play" by Dorothy and Jerome Singer). I would try to gather a few props and let the performance take place on a stage (demarcated by masking tape on the floor).

We applaud this and ideas just like it. Watch out, Broadway!
