URGENT FUNDRAISER IN AID OF CULTURAL ICON LOUIS McWILLIAMS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (April 9, 2013)

TORONTO, ON. - Concerned Friends of Toronto Cultural Icon Louis McWilliams, along with the Scarborough Caribbean Youth Dance Ensemble will host a fundraiser on Sunday, April 21 at 4:30 p.m. at The Church of Nativity in Scarborough to raise much needed funds to assist with medical expenses in both the short-term and long-term recovery of Mr. Louis McWilliams, a well respected SCYDE alumni. The fundraising event aptly named It’s a Kulture ting...the Journey Continues will feature many of Toronto’s renowned Caribbean artists all lending their artistry to an evening filled with dance, music, art, storytelling, raffles, prizes and much more. The entertainment filled event is set to feature Kevin A. Ormsby / KasheDance, Tamla Matthews, Caribbean Dance Theatre, Keith Pascall, Hummingbird Dance Group, La Petite Musicale, and Calypsonians Eulith Tara Woods (a.k.a. Macomere Fifi), Michael Thomas (Redman) and Guney Cedeno (Guney).

Currently residing in Trinidad and Tobago where he is an Instructor at UWI (University of the West Indies), tragedy struck with an accident that took place on Saturday February 16, 2013. Through no fault of his own doing, an explosion of a power washer in Louis’ yard involving two workmen when one attempted to pour gas into the tank while it was running caused an explosion which set the house on fire, trapping the innocent and unsuspecting Mr. McWilliams inside his home, who had no other choice in saving his life but to run through the fire. In the process, he sustained burns to over 50% of his body, face and head. He was transferred from the Intensive Care Unit to Ward 43 of the Port of Spain General Hospital which is a general ward with no specialist treatment for burn victims. Therapy is done once daily but, in his condition, he should receive therapy more frequently. His doctor recommends that he should be transferred to a private hospital, preferably West Shore Medical, where, he would receive specialist care and receive therapy at least twice a day. West Shore's fees are approximately TT$1100.00 per night and his recovery time will be approximately three months. We know that his insurance will meet a portion of the costs and his sister is endeavouring to ascertain exactly what percentage that will be. It goes without saying that long-term medical treatment, rehabilitation and reconstructive surgery are all on the horizon for Louis.

A call to action from Louis’ family and friends, in life and in Arts, is rippling through the city and should you wish to contribute to Louis’ recovery, donations can be made at any TD Canada Trust branch to Acct. # 6487432 Transit #1029.

ABOUT LOUIS MCWILLIAMS

Mr Williams holds a Master of Arts Degree from York University, Toronto, is currently the Coordinator of the Theatre Arts Unit and Lecturer in Theatre Arts and Dance at the Department of Creative and Festival Arts, UWI. In 2009, he had the distinction of directing the first theatrical production, Dance Me Lover by Ronald John,at the National Academy of the Performing Arts (NAPA). At the Department of Creative and Festival Arts UWI, he has directed and co-directed numerous productions including March To Caroni; Fragments; Bitter Cassava; View from Belmont; Man Better Man: and Guineas Other Suns Other directing credits include: Sing De Chorus; Ah Wanna Fall; Ten to One; No Ticket; The Dragon Can’t Dance and Ogun Iyan – As in Pan at Carifesta X in Guyana. He has directed over 50 productions in T&T including a Triology written by Rawle Gibbons

He has also directed all of the prior Broadway Musical productions of Must Come See Productions. These include Crazy for You (2005); Fiddler on the Roof (2006) Oliver! (2007); The Sound of Music (2008); Disney’s Beauty and the Beast (2009) and Elton John and Tim Rice’s Aida (2010).His overseas credits include Light the Flambeaux (1997), Toronto, and BonJou Ma Titi (1999),St Lucia. From 2003, Louis ventured in the area of playwriting when he wrote and directed The Saga of Little Man and followed up with Culture Mama and The Journey which were performed by the Malick Folk Performing Company, the group of which he is the artistic director. Louis is pursuing his Ph.D. in Cultural Studies.

The Biggest Coward of Them All

Let me just get the disclaimer out of the way right off the bat. I'm very sorry that it has been several weeks (read as: months) since I wrote an actual blog post true to the Darling Nicky schoolings (read as: the pouring out of the painful, gut-wrenching details of my personal life and sometimes yours) that has made Darling Nicky's World the pseudo-phenemenon (read as: I'm just really good at SEO'ing) it is today.

Anyways, now that I'm forgiven, let's move on.

I saw the above photo-quote on Instagram (my new favourite social media platform....Sorry Twitter) a few weeks ago and although I'm a heavy Retweeter, I'm not so much of a Reposter, due in large part that there's no easy repost function on Instagram and I intend to speak to Mr. Zuckerberg about that at a later date. This quote by Bob Marley (can I get a confirmation that those are indeed his words because let's face it - I've listened to many a recorded interview with Mr. Robert Nesta Marley and his English never came out sounding quite like that...I digress) really touched a nerve and when I checked later on double-taps, my heart broke for all the people who were touched too.

What is it about people that like to make you fall in love with them and then leave you hanging like it's an Olympic sport? Relying on all kinds of lame excuses to justify their selfish game of emotional bait and hook. I know that the quote implied that it is just men that commit this awful love crime, but women do it too - and I always keep it real. Goose, Gander - you know what I mean.

Having your love aroused - meaning falling in love with somebody who for all intents and purposes behaves as though they are also in love with you - only to have them cast you aside because the thrill of the chase is over - is one of the most painful places to be. You are open, vulnerable and committed to someone who for the very reason that you are those things no longer feels the same way about you. It's like the woman who saves and saves for that must-have Gucci purse, dreaming about it everyday, motivated by the thought of having it, and then when tax money comes in and tips your savings over the edge so you can finally purchase your sought-after carry-all, the excitement is gone, the climax is over, and Gucci takes residence with the several other purses that preceded it on the shelf of a closet in the basement of your Grandmother's house. Ok, that purse analogy is a little far-fetched but so is the idea that someone would invest so much time into loving someone just to drop them like a hot potato once they had the person exactly where they wanted. At least until it happened to me.

Everybody yearns for a certain kind of love. Just as not everyone has the same taste in food, music or clothing - not everyone enjoys or appreciates love the same way. I like my love hard, raw, honest, passionate, maybe even a little consuming. I am the chili pepper of love. Or maybe even the Scotch Bonnet. Others like their love a little more unassuming, reserved, friendly - like a bowl of mashed potatoes. Not that fancy to look at, not that exciting on it's own, but a very reliable side dish. When relationships go wrong each person wants to blame the other - but in the case where one party has deliberately set out to physically and emotionally seduce a person into total surrender only to abandon them because they had no intention of loving you the way you grew to love them is just plain cruel.

A woman's love is a special, special gift. Women have a unique quality in HOW they show and give love. Passionate and sexy to appeal to a man's most primal needs. Nurturing and tender to tend to a man's ego. Supportive and encouraging to lift a man's spirit. Instinctive and insightful to anticipate and deliver on a man's needs before he even has to ask. Selfless to show her man that she is on his side come hell or high waters, and limitless to reassure her man that he is safe in her heart. In order to wear all those different hats and essentially be "every" woman, a man would have to create an environment of emotional safety in which a woman can lay to rest her baggage to make room in her burdened heart to place him at the centre of it.

And then the bastard decides he's "caught" you, and then moves on to the next prey. Leaving you open, vulnerable and hurting. And because this is not the first time you have loved so hard only to learn he was a bastard, you feel more duped, more jaded, more like becoming a lesbian would be easier than this sh*t. There is no closure for you because he doesn't ever finish what he started. He worked that emotional G-spot of yours until you were squirting love and devotion. Then walked. What a coward!

Final Thoughts:

On the one hand, no one sets out to fall in love with someone that is not right for them. Love sometimes sneaks up on you, other times it smacks you on the head. But a man that loves a woman, whether or not it's the right circumstance would not treat her like a conquest. Especially because men so often preach that they don't like women who play games. My love is a rare gift, not given away freely to anyone. It can remain dormant like a volcano for a long time if left undisturbed or explode in a steamy eruption. Is it getting hot in here?

NEW MUSIC: MICHIE “BAHDGYAL” MEE RETURNS TO JAMAICAN ROOTS WITH “BAHDGYAL BUBBLE”

TORONTO, ON - December 31, 2012

A legend in Canadian music returns to the spotlight for 2013 with the release of her latest single and viral video “Bahdgyal Bubble”. The Queen of Canadian Hip-Hop, Michie “Bahdgyal” Mee makes her highly anticipated return to the studio where she records her new EP Bahdgyal’s Revenge under her Indy label MBM Entertainment, and MBM Publishing Inc. This award-winning emcee known to be ahead of her time when she incorporated elements of rock, death metal and dancehall into hip-hop and rap, now embarks on yet another musical journey that will incorporate a variety of genres and turn rap and dancehall on its head. Her journey begins in Toronto with the recording of “Bahdgyal Bubble” and takes us back to her country of birth, Jamaica where she teams up with several historic artists, and the up and comers of tomorrow.

Michie’s long list of credits include a Juno nomination for her 1992 smash hit “Jamaican Funk” and extensive touring with Public Enemy, Queen Latifah and fellow Canadian Hip-Hop artist Maestro Fresh-Wes. She has also showcased her talents on the silver screen as an actress in both film and television, having worked with Hollywood mainstays L.L. Cool J and Eddie Griffin. In 2012, Michie was inducted into the Stylus Spinfest Hall of Fame for her remarkable contributions to Canadian music.

“Badgyal Bubble” is a high-energy introduction to her fans old and new of her evolution as an artist. A perfect blend of Rap, Dancehall, and Reggae – Michie has proven that her artistry has withheld the test of time, and just as the closing lyrics command, “you never know dem haffi respect Michie!”
