Kul Man Ghising makes it Nepal load-shedding-free

2016-12-24T11:09:00.002-05:00

Nepal Electricity Authority’s Managing Director Kul Man Ghising said the national power monopoly was working in a bid to make the nation load-shedding-free. He said it would begin from the Capital. “My job is not to keep talking that I will end load shedding,” he told journalists in Kathmandu today, “But, what matters is management.” Ghising claimed that the Kathmandu Valley did not witness any power outage since the Tihar festival as the authority managed the power distribution well. Meanwhile, Ghising said he was not the sole person to work for the efforts. He also attributed the positive developments to the willpower of the incumbent government and a 37-point program issued by the Minister for Energy Janardan Sharma. “If we are successful (in our mission) in these two months,” he said, “We can be load-shedding-free for the whole year.”

Ncell awarded "Telecom Company of the Year’

2016-12-22T12:26:00.000-05:00

Ncell has been crowned with ‘Telecom Company of the Year’ award at 2016 Nepal Best Practices Awards on Wednesday.

International growth partnership company, Frost & Sullivan during 2016 Nepal Best Practices Awards, which honoured best-in-class firms within a multitude of industries in country, conferred Ncell with award, as per a press statement issued on Thursday.

Upendra Mahato, founding president of International Coordination Council of Non-Resident Nepali Association, handed over award to Ncell Managing Director Simon Perkins. The 2016 Nepal Best Practices Awards had followed stringent evaluation, based on varieties of actual market performance indicators — growth, innovation and contribution the firms made in Nepali economy to decide the winners. Perkins said Ncell is determined to continue delivering exceptional and sustainable service.

This is the third award that Ncell has received in 2016. In February, it had received Global Mobile Awards by GSMA for ‘Mobile in Emergency and Humanitarian Situations’ and in October was recognised by Frost & Sullivan as ‘2016 Nepal Mobile Service Provider for the Year’ in Singapore.

Nepal to hold military exercise with China

2016-12-22T12:21:00.000-05:00

Beginning a new level of bilateral military engagement, Nepal will hold its first ever joint military exercise with China on February 10, senior military officials have told Nepali media.

The focus of the military exercise, named Pratikar-1, will be on training Nepali forces in dealing with hostage scenarios involving international terror groups.

Nepal’s Chief of Army Staff General Rajendra Chhetri visited Beijing in March when both sides had resolved to strengthen military ties. Nepal has conducted exercises with India earlier.

Unconventional move

Analysts say that though the military drill with China does not violate the 1950 India-Nepal treaty of peace and friendship, it does appear unconventional.

“Nepal can conduct military exercises with other countries without violating the agreement with India, but the upcoming exercise with China is certainly unconventional and alarming as China’s definition of terrorism covers Tibetan agitators,” said Prof. S.D. Muni, a distinguished fellow at New Delhi-based Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses. He believes that China is planning the military move to targeting the Tibetans.

Reports suggested that the exercise will firm up Kathmandu’s preparedness to deal with hostage situations like the one that caused large number of deaths in Dhaka’s Holey Artisan bakery in July.

Chinese Airlines resumes flights to Kathmandu

2016-12-21T21:39:00.000-05:00

Chinese airlines, which had stopped their flights to Kathmandu due to earthquake and blockade, have resumed their services.

Some Chinese airlines have also started to increase flight frequency to Kathmandu.

China Southern Airlines, which had stopped its flights to Kathmandu a day after the blockade, resumed its service from August, operating three flights a week. It started flying to Kathmandu two times a day from October 30.

Dhir Chandra Shrestha, the deputy sales manager at the Kathmandu office of China Southern Airlines, said that the airline would add more flights if the demand increases.

Speaking at an interaction with Pokhara-based tour operators, Shrestha said that the flights resumed from August and that the airline added flights after passenger footfalls increased.

“The number of Chinese tourists visiting Nepal has not increased much this year,” he said, adding that the tourism industry should make concerted efforts to bring more Chinese tourists to Nepal.

According to Shrestha, flights coming to Nepal have 90 percent occupancy. “Half of them are Chinese and the remaining from other countries,” added Shrestha. He also said that the tourism entrepreneurs should put more efforts to attract more Chinese.

“We want to bring more Chinese tourists to Nepal by joining hands with the tourism stakeholders of Pokhara,” he added.

Apart from China Southern, Air China and Sichuan Airlines are flying to Kathmandu from Chengdu, while China Eastern links Kunming with Kathmandu.

USA provides Nepal duty-Free access to travel goods

2016-12-21T21:26:00.000-05:00

Nepal has received duty-free market access in the US for its travel goods such as luggage, backpacks, handbags and wallets under the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) program along with various other least developed countries (LDC), the US Embassy said here on Wednesday.

The US Trade Representative’s office announced the Annual Product Review under the GSP program which added duty-free status for travel goods.

“The new rule makes these products eligible for duty-free status beginning July 1,” the embassy said in a press release. US imports of travel and luggage products total almost $10 billion in 2015.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for Nepali businesses to expand their exports to US markets,” said US Ambassador to Nepal Alaina B Teplitz. “A strong commitment to open-market policies, a stable and transparent legal environment that secures property rights, policies that foster dynamic entrepreneurial activity and strategic infrastructure investments will help Nepal make the most of this opportunity.”
