The prestigious PDC World Darts Championship begins today and it should be an exciting tournament, with the best players in the world coming up against each other. The 72 entrants will be battling for the £200,000 first prize, along with the World Championship title for the twentieth PDC World Championship.

The mighty Phil Taylor is our 7/4 favourite to win the tournament, which would be his sixteenth title this year. He in entering in excellent form since winning the Players Championship at the start of the month and is certainly a tough player to come up against. His first round match is against Michael Mansell in which the Power is our very strong 1/50 favourite to have success and continue into the second round.

Our second favourite to win the tournament is Michael Van Gerwen, who has had a surprisingly successful year. He won his fist PDC title in October and has since won seven more this year. He could do well here if his scoring power is as good as it has been previously, and he can be backed to win the PDC World Championship outright at 4/1.

Adrian Lewis will be defending his title and looking to secure his hat-trick of PDC World Championship wins. He certainly has the ability to do well despite only winning once this year, and is at 10/1 to win. Simon Whitlock was runner up to Lewis in 2010 and could also do well here since having such a successful year, including a win in the European Championship. Whitlock can be backed at 14/1 to win the tournament and he has done well in previous PDC World Championships.

Gary Anderson is at 16/1 to win, although he has had a disappointing year, finishing bottom of the league table with only three wins from fourteen tournaments. He is not entering this match in the best form so Raymond Van Barneveld could be a better choice. Van Barneveld recently won his first major tournament and could well be the dark horse of the tournament, and is at 14/1 to win. Van Barneveld will be facing Michael Smith in his first round match, in which he is our hot 2/9 favourite to win and reach the second round.

The World Grand Prix Darts is now into its’ second round after the eventful first round was completed Tuesday evening. The first round fixtures were full of drama and excitement which only looks set to continue.

Monday’s World Grand Prix matches were jam packed with talent and skill seeing Brendan Dolan and Phil Taylor impress the crowd with two 2-0 wins, whereas Tuesday’s fixtures included some surprise exits. James Wade and Raymond Van Barneveld both suffered shock losses and are now out of the tournament, despite both players having World Grand Prix betting in their favour before Tuesday’s action.

Brendan Dolan kicks off the second round taking on Vincent Van Der Voort. Dolan took his nickname ‘History Maker’ in this same tournament last year, hitting the first ever double-start nine-darter and making it to the final. Defending champion Phil Taylor will be meeting Robert Thornton Wednesday evening. ‘The Power’ smashed out a 2-0 win in his first fixture, despite struggling of late and failing to qualify for the Championship League finals. Taylor dropped only a leg in each set and cruised through to the second round of the World Grand Prix darts, and he can be backed to beat Thornton at odds of 1/5.

The World Grand Prix Darts is into its’ second day after a cracking start Monday night. The entrants in Tuesday’s action will be looking to take the limelight from the mighty Phil Taylor, who took a win in straight sets over youngster Michael Smith Monday night.

The ten time World Grand Prix winner in the fourteen years history of the event, Taylor, is going to be a tough man to beat, however he has had a rocky year with a few eminent losses. Some worthy contenders to defeat him include James Wade, Adrian Lewis and Raymond Van Barneveld, all playing in the World Grand Prix Tuesday evening.

James Wade is facing Colin Osbourne, and is the obvious 4/11 favourite in the match. ‘The Machine’ has previously taken this title twice and reached the final of the World Matchplay earlier in the year. Adrian Lewis will also be battling for the title, and the one time protégé of Taylor looks to have the ability to do so after winning the latest two World titles. He can also be backed to win the tournament outright at odds of 8/1, and is the second favourite in World Grand Prix betting. Burnett can be backed at 2/1 to defeat Lewis.

Dolan relishing return to scene of historic nine darter

History maker Brendan Dolan is eagerly awaiting his return to the World Grand Prix Darts this week. The Northern Irish star became the first player in the double-start format to land a nine-darter during his epic semi-final win over James Wade in Dublin last October (1st Round Matches Betting). Taylor Changes Darts To Book Place In Semi's

Phil Taylor booked his place in the World Matchplay darts semi-final's last night after a change of darts worked a treat for the 5 times champion. (Taylor 1/10 to beat Baxter).

Taylor initially went down 2-0 to Andy Hamilton, but despite hitting 12 180s Hamilton was no match for the world number 1. Taylor said: "I changed back to my old darts, I was unbeatable in my living room, but for some reason it wasn't working on stage so I just went back to my old darts."

Taylor made key early finishes of 126 and 127 in successive legs and sealed his win with a 170 checkout booking him a place in tonight's semi-final against Ronnie Baxter. (Baxter 6/1 to beat Taylor).

Taylor added: "I am happy that the 170 went in at the end, and I will definitely be in for another battle tonight against Ronnie. The tournament is just getting better and better and I will do everything I can to win this title again." .

Michael van Gerwen landed a nine-dart finish on his way to a 13-9 victory over Steve Beaton in the second round of the World Matchplay in Blackpool. The 23-year-old hit two 180s in the ninth leg (Thursday’s total 180’s Betting) and followed them up with a 141 finish to send the Winter Gardens crowd wild.

That gave Van Gerwen (14/1 to win the World Matchplay) a 5-4 lead but the match was a close-fought affair in the early stages and it was deadlocked at 6-6 after 12 legs despite four further ton-plus finishes from the Dutchman (Thursday’s Highest Checkout betting). But Van Gerwen then took command and reeled off four successive legs to open up a 10-6 advantage only for Beaton to keep his hopes alive by winning the next two legs.

However, the former world champion was unable to make any further inroads and Van Gerwen wrapped up the victory, finishing with an average of 104.36 - the highest of the tournament so far.

The Dutchman (14/1 to win the World Matchplay) said "It feels great. It means so much for me and I'm very happy - I exploded into the game after the nine-darter. It was a very good game and Steve played well too. To win the game with a 104 average and a nine-darter is brilliant."

The 19th World Matchplay gets under way in Blackpool later today and the home crowd will be hoping a local hero can lift the gloom of this damp British summer. Players will come from as far afield as Belgium, the Netherlands and Australia to compete for one of the most prestigious titles in darts.

But there won’t be many more popular winners of the title than Blackpool-born Wes Newton (201/ to win World Matchplay), who is now based a few miles along the Fylde Coast in Fleetwood.

The World No.5 said "I used to go every year as a kid. You say to yourself 'I want to be up there one day' and I've achieved that. To walk out there for the very first time was unbelievable. The atmosphere is absolutely fantastic. The venue is part of that because it's not long but it is wide, so the crowd are rammed in right behind you and almost on top of you."

Newton does not have the best of records at the Winter Gardens - his first four Matchplay appearances ended with first-round defeats. He finally ended his losing run last year, reaching the quarter-finals, before falling to eventual champion Phil Taylor.

However this has not dampened the 34 year olds’ enthusiasm, he added "I kept getting beaten in the first round, but eventually I learned to treat it as another tournament and to stop trying so hard there. The World Championship is the biggest one but, to me, this tournament is a close second. I like the matchplay darts where it's just first to 10 legs. You know what's what. In a set situation, you can keep winning legs and losing sets."

Adrian Lewis will look to take advantage of playing twice as the McCoy's Premier League Darts visits the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff tonight. The world champion only recorded his first victory of the season a week ago in Dublin when he defeated Kevin Painter 8-3, and will play twice in Cardiff in the absence of Gary Anderson, who is absent due to a family bereavement.

His second opponent of the night Barney (5/4 to win the match) was also in a confident mood. He is currently in second place and has won 3 of his last four matches. The Dutchman said "When I got the wildcard I was over the moon, and I said that I want to prove a few people wrong who said that I was finished."

The BDO World Championship Darts reaches its climax tonight as 2009's beaten finalist Tony O'Shea (7/1 to win 7-5 against Christian Kist) gets a second chance to lift the trophy as he faces unknown Dutch qualifier Christian Kist. Both players had thrilling semi-finals with O'Shea edging a back and forth encounter with Wesley Harms while Christian Kist fought back from 5-3 down to beat 2009 champion Ted "The Count" Hankey.

Tony O'Shea (EVS to beat Christian Kist) has long been a fixture in the latter stages of all the major BDO tournaments. He has reached the final of the four BDO majors without ever winning one of the big titles. He lost in the 2009 World Championship final to Ted Hankey and many are expecting him not to waste his latest opportunity. O'Shea laid the gauntlet down to his rivals by beating three-time World Champion Martin Adams in the quarter finals and no one has been able to match him.

Christian Kist (4/5 to beat Tony O'Shea) was ranked 106th in the world by the BDO ahead of this tournament but he showed his talent in the very first round beating sixth seed and compatriot Jan Dekker with an impressive average of 97.7. Kist is the latest young Dutch star to make waves in the BDO after Jelle Klassen and Michael van Gerwen, both now with rival organisation the PDC.

Kist will count himself lucky to be here after he was seemingly on his way out of the tournament as he was 5-3 down in his semi-final with Ted Hankey. Hankey suffered a loss in concentration though as he let a draft on stage break his focus and allow Kist back into the game. Hankey announced he was moving to the PDC after his loss so maybe his head wasn't in the right place for a World Championship semi-final.

Expect a close match between O'Shea and Kist. Both their respective semi-finals came down to a deciding set and there hasn't been a winning margin bigger than two sets in the last six BDO finals.

Martin Adams (4/9 to beat Tony O'Shea) cruised to this stage of the tournament without dropping a set. The number one seed looks on course to pick up his fourth world crown and third in row. He beat Scott Mitchell in the first round and Scotland's Gary Stone in round two. Tony O'Shea is a much more established player and will be a tougher challenge by far. Last time these two met at the Lakeside was in the first round in 2007 where Adams took a comfortable 3-0 win.

Before Adams and O'Shea take the stage, Dutchman Wesley Harms (8/11 to beat Paul Jennings) takes on England's Paul Jennings. Harms caused an upset in the last round by eliminating fourth seed Robbie Green with relative ease, taking the match 4 sets to 1. Paul Jennings has had an easier route to this stage beating qualifiers Garry Thompson and Steve Douglas. Jennings has averaged 83.4 for the tournament so far while Harms averaged 90.72 in his second round match so the Englishman may have to step up if he wants to reach the last four.

The 2012 BDO World Darts Championships are well under way, and the action has been enthralling from the off. There have been a couple of shocks so far in the first round, but the standard has been high, with the players doing all they can to shrug off suggestions that this tournament is just a sideshow to the PDC event. Here is a round up of all the action so far.

Tournament favourite Martin Adams (100/30 To Win The Tournament) made a slow start to the defence of his title, beating Scott Mitchell 3-0 but not showing the kind of form he'll need to produce if he hopes to retain the BDO crown for another year.

No.2 seed Scott Waites (100/30 To Win The Tournament) faced Andy Boulton in the first round, and having already seen Adams (1/8 To Beat Gary Stone) underperform it was an opportunity to make a statement. Waites didn't disappoint, and whilst he dropped a set to Boulton he was in control of the match through out. Waites knows about winning big tournaments, with his name on the 2011 World Masters trophy, and highlighted his ability with the biggest checkout of the tournament, 156.

Elsewhere, fan favourite Ted Hankey (10/1 To Win The Tournament) beat Clive Barden in a 3-2 match that nearly saw Hankey get caught out for being slightly complacent. Hankey took a 2-0 lead before allowing Barden to get back into the match and square things up at 2-2. The 15th seed however showed his quality, ending the match in comfortable fashion.

The day sprung a shock or two along the way, with seventh seed and former World Champion John Walton knocked out by Martin Atkins (33/1 To Win Outright), losing 3-1 after never really finding his feet in the match and lacking the killer touch that saw him reach the top of his game in the last decade. Another shock saw 2011 semi-finalist Jan Dekker dispatched by Christian Kist (14/1 To Win Outright). The sixth seed Dekker went 2-0 down but recovered to 2-2, only to lose his nerve in the final set and crash out of the tournament.

Willy van der Wiel (33/1 To Win Outright) had no such problems in his match, seeing off Dave Prins 3-0 in style and throwing his name into the hat for the Championship. Paul Jennings, 12th seed, beat Garry Thompson 3-1 in a classy performance and there was a win for Wesley Harms who edged past Martin Phillips 3-1 in the last match of the day, in a clash that will be remembered more for missed doubles than quality darts.
