Tandag City wins overall title in Inter-Cities

TANAUAN City -- Tandag City emerged as the overall team champion in the 2011 National Inter-Cities and Municipalities Chess Team Championship last Monday at the Tanauan Event Center (TEC).

Led by Grandmaster (GM) Richard Bitoon, Tandag City defeated Bacolod Negros/NICA, 3-1, in the finals.
The win was worth P150,000 for the Tandag City campaigners, who secured a finals berth by scraping past tough Davao City, 2.5-1.5, in the crossover semis.

The Ilonggos, who dispatched elimination topnotcher Mandaluyong City, 3-1, in the other semifinal, had to settle for second overall and went home with P90,000.

Bitoon, Fide Master Jan Emmanuel Garcia and Narquingen Reyes secured the crucial wins in the “Armageddon” playoff after the Ilonggos, backstopped by Fide Master Hamed Nouri, forged a 2-2 draw.
In the "Armageddon" playoff, the player handling the white pieces is given a 6-5 advantage in time but the player with the black pieces needs only a draw to win.

Bitoon, armed with the advantageous white pieces, crushed Nouri; Garcia outwitted Sander Severino while Reyes downed Raymund dela Pena.

Joel Pimentel secured the only win for Bacolod after defeating Sherwin Tiu on board three.
In the battle for third, Davao City of Mayor Inday Sara Duterte, demolished Mandaluyong City of Mayor Benhur Abalos Jr., 3-1, in another Armaggedon finish to clinch third place and win P75,000. – By Marlon Bernardino

Nat'l chess championship kicks off in Batangas

11.04.2011 MANILA, Philippines - The 2011 National Inter-Cities and Municipalities Chess Team Championship kicks off Friday at the Pavilion Event Center in Tanauan City, Batangas.

The first round will commence right after the opening ceremony beginning 8:30 am, with National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) President Prospero Pichay Jr. leading the traditional ceremonial moves along with Tanauan Economic Council executive director, Atty. Ruel Canobas and NCFP executive director Grand Master (GM) Jayson Gonzales.

Tagaytay City is favored to go all the with GM Wesley So and National Master (NM) Edmundo Gatus at the helm.

The other fancied teams in the event are GM Rogelio Antonio's Mandaluyong City, GM Darwin Laylo's Misamis Oriental, GM John Paul Gomez' Tagbilaran City, GM-elect Oliver Barbosa's Tanauan City, GM-elect Richard Bitoon's Tandag City and International Master-elect Richelieu Salcedo's FEU-Manila.
The event will coincide with grand final of the Philippine Academy for Chess Excellence (PACE) - National Chess Academy (NAC) and NCFP 2011 Age-Group Chess Championships.

"The inter-cities and municipalities is one of the most anticipated events in our calendar," said Pichay. "It's a great wrap-up event for our top players before they compete in the Southeast Asian Games."

A total of 277 grand finalists are expected to see action in four age brackets - 17-under, 14-under, 11-under and 8-under.

The grand final will be the basis for selection of the Philippine national youth team that will compete in the Singapore Youth Festival Chess Championships on December 26-31.

"We are very excited to host a couple of big events in chess at the same time," said Tanauan's Atty. Canobas. "This event gives the future of Philippine chess a chance to see our best players in action."

We are proud to announce the list of winners who will compete in the Grand Finals of the PACE-NCA-NCFP 2011 Age-Group Chess Championships slated on November 3 to 8, 2011 at the PAVILION EVENT CENTER, Tanauan City, Batangas.

The winners in the grand finals will represent the country in the Singapore youth festival Chess Championships slated Dec 26- 31, 2011.

A total of 277 Grand finalists in four divisions boys and girls, 17- under, 14 -under 11-under and 8- under from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao are expected to see action. The event will also use as a basis for the selection of the members for the Philippine National youth team.

The Finalists in action at the SM Megamall Activity Center

My first time to enter the Shell Finals and missed a point to make it to the top 3! But nevertheless, I still made it to the top 5!

We were billeted at Gohotels for 4-days and 3 nights stay. A bus fetch us from hotel to the venue which is at SM Megamall. Players and companions are given free meals, breakfast, lunch and dinner. It is a happy experience being a Shell finalist and grateful for this opportunity, hope to make it again next year.

I have been asked to take part in some ceremonial move but this move is special... look whose I am doing it with... it is none other than Mr. Sample himself, a famous dancer and Filipino actor Mr. Jhong Hilario of Showtime! His father is Councilor Virgilio Hilario, the sponsor of this tournament.

A total of 650 chess kiddies, juniors and non-masters woodpushers registered at the Jose T. Rabe Rapid Chess Tournament held at the Alphaland Southgate Mall, Makati City.
The list consist of some 175 Non-masters, 127 - Under 16, 232 - Under 14, 119 - Under 12, and 97 - Under 10 Age groupers.
The event started quite late than the scheduled time because the tournament sponsors still accept a number of on-stire registrants. But still, it went on smoothly after the event had started.

Fernandez tops Shell chess

MANILA, Philippines—Alfer Joseph Fernandez stunned top seed Yves Christian Fiel in the fifth round then nipped fellow University of the Visayas bet Michael Silvederio in the tie-break to bag the boys’ juniors division crown in the Shell National Youth Active Chess Championships-Visayas leg at SM Cebu-Activity Center last Sunday.

Fernandez, who with Fiel and Vincent Balena swept their first four matches in the 20-and-under category, also toppled Balena in the sixth round then drew his last two games against Silvederio and James Torres to finish with seven points.

Silvederio matched that output with a final round victory over Balena to clinch the other berth in the grand finals of the annual event sponsored by Pilipinas Shell set next month at SM Megamall.

Also advancing to the national finals slated Oct. 8-9 were Jessa Marie Balbona (girls’ juniors), Allan Pason and Kyle Rhenzi Sevillano boys’ kiddies) and Vic Glysen Derotas (girls’ kiddies).

Fiel wound up tied for third with Torres and Yuri Cauba at 6.5 points.

Balbona scored 3.5 points in the last four rounds, including a final round victory over Sheila Sepanton, to tally six points in the seven-round girls’ for 20-and-under class.

Sep 10, 2011 The work seems to have been done for the leaders going into the rest day as on the fourth day of play, Round 7 only saw one decisive result when top seeded Filipino International Master Oliver Barbosa again took sole lead with a win over Vietnam’s International Master Nguyen Van Huy.

That left him on 6 points and just one more draw needed to complete the Grandmaster title requirements which he duly accomplished with a short draw in Round 8 against Malaysian International Master Mas Hafizulhelmi.

With successive draws in Rounds 7 and 8, Uzbekistan’s Jahongir Vakhidov who has now completed the International Master title requirements now only needs a draw in the final round to achieve his first Grandmaster norm.

The most watched encounter of the day came in Round 8 when International Masters Richard Bitoon and Arghyadip Das played each other needing a win to keep their hopes of the Grandmaster title alive and while the Filipino will have one last chance tomorrow if he wins, their draw has mathematically ended the talented Indian’s slim hopes.

09.04.2011. Cabuyao, Laguna - We woke up early in the morning and prepared ourselves for an invitational tournament in Cabuyao, Laguna. I am supposed to attend the Baguio Center Mall quarterly tournament but because of bad weather that past weekdays and it would be another tiring week for me my parents called it off. And so had to choose the next event in line through the invitation of Mr. Rey Yaon, the very industrious father of singer chess player Michelle Yaon.

We arrived just around 9am and the turn-out of players was unexpected according to the organizers. They were also greateful for my presence and so with WFM Antoinette San Diego. ^_^. I joined the kiddies division while Antoinette opted to join the non-master category.
My fellow age groupers and the prominent kiddie chess players from Laguna were present. Since the palaro elimination is coming soon, their divisions were well represented including Jhoemar Mendiogarin (Calamba), Jasper Marce (Bgy Malitlit, Sta Rosa), Mark James Marcellana (Sta Rosa), Jason Danday (Dasmarinas, Cavite), Vladimir Gonzales (Calamba / STCAA),CM Navarro (Binan/Laguna Provincial),Israelito Rilloraza (National Age Group Champ), Noel Geronimo (Quezon Province / STCAA).

KUNMING CITY, Yunnan Province, China---Marie Antoinette San Diego and Samantha Glo Revita of the Philippines rediscovered their old brilliance, starring for the ASEAN team as it edged China, 2.5-1.5, in the sixth round of the 2011 China-ASEAN junior chess classic competition in the girls 12 years old and under category here at the Lanice Hotel Inn, New Asia Athletics Park, Guangfu Road in Kunming City, Yunnan Province, China on Friday (Aug 26, 2011).

The Dasmarinas, Cavite based San Diego, a freshman student of The First Uniting Christian School, played superbly with the white pieces to score a crushing victory over Zhao Sheng Xin. The Rosales, Pangasinan Revita, a grade six pupil of Rosales North Central School, on the other hand prevailed using the disadvantageous black pieces against Huang Mo Fei.

Ummi Fisabilillah of Indonesia, the third player belonged to the ASEAN team settled for a truce with Zhang Rang.

Jiang Xin Ran, the fourth player for the ASEAN team remain scoreless after sixth outings after losing to Xu Qian Qian.

In the fifth round morning session, the ASEAN team also defeated China, 2.5-1.5, with San Diego and Fisabilillah were leading the way.

San Diego subdued Zhang Rang while Fisabillah nipped Zhao Sheng Xin. Revita, meantime split the point with Xu Qian Qian and Jiang Xin Ran was beaten by Huang Mo Fei.

With two rounds to go, China (12.5 points) is a full point ahead against ASEAN team (11.5 points) in the team competition.

In the individual competition, Xu Qian Qian of China remains on top with 5 points, half point ahead over San Diego with 4.5 points. Revita, Fisabilillah and Hoang Mo Fei of China was tied at 3rd to 5th placers with 3.5 points each.

Daryl Unix who belonged to the "ASEAN" team now has 1 win and 1 loss in two outings.

While Daryl Unix recovered his form, Marie Antoinette eke out another win this time against Zhao Sheng Xin of China in their Sicilian skirmish for his second straight wins in as many rounds in the girls 12 years old and under category.

EIGHT young chess masters will vie for honors in the China-Asean Youth Chess Classic Tournament 2011 slated on August 23 to 28 at the Lanice Hotel Inn, New Asia Athletics Park in Yunnan Province, China.
The squad is composed of Dennis Gutierrez 3rd, Ronald Canino, Julius Gonzales, Daryl Unix Samantila, Irish Yngayo, Samantha Glo Revita and the San Diego sisters Jerlyn Mae and Marie Antoinette.

Gutierrez and Canino will be seeing action in Open 8-under, Gonzales in Open 10-under and Samantila in Open 12-under. Jerlyn Mae and Yngayo will compete in girls 8-under while Marie Antoinette and Samantha Glo take part in girls 12-under.

“We’re sending our top players in the different age-group categories and we’re confident of doing well here in China,” said National Chess Federation of the Philippines President Prospero Pichay Jr.

The players were selected based on their impressive exploits in the 12th Asean (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Age-Group Chess Championship held in Tarakan, Indonesia recently.
“Most of our players are in good shape right now. They are all well-prepared and better-trained,” added Pichay.

MANILA, Philippines - Kevin Mirano toppled Patrick Erle Florendo in the sixth round then nipped the second seeded bet in the tiebreak to cop the boys’ juniors crown in the 19th Shell National Youth Active Chess Championships Southern Luzon leg at SM City Batangas in Batangas City last Sunday.
Mirano, held to a draw by Daniel Casil in the fifth round, surprised Florendo with the black pieces to gain the crucial win then the FEU mainstay bounced back from a seventh round draw with Ali Guya with a victory over Sheider Nebato in the final round to finish with seven points in the 20-and-under category.
Florendo, playing out of UST, rebounded from that setback by sweeping his last two matches against Michael Pinero and Jerome Villanueva to tie Mirano and clinch the other berth in the grand finals of the event sponsored by Pilipinas Shell.

Paul Robert Evangelista, tied with Mirano and Florendo halfway through the eight-round tournament, struggled with 1.5 points in the last four rounds and hobbled in joint 10th while Guya, Angelo Merilles and Leonard Libongcogon shared third place with 6.5 points.

Crissa Canada of Adamson, meanwhile, humbled the field in the girls’ juniors side, fighting back from a second round loss to Krissa Abasolo with a sweep of her last five games to finish with six points. The 14-year-old find then edged Crystal Mendoza of UP in the tiebreak to gain the lone slot in the national finals set Oct. 8-9 at SM Megamall.

On hand during awards rites were Ronald Suarez, Sustainable Development manager of Pilipinas Shell, and IM Ronald Dableo, one of the products of the annual event sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Phils. and backed by Shell V-Power, Shellane and Shell Helix in partnership with SM Supermalls and Rudy Project.

Third seed Daryl Samantila, also of Adamson, emerged the solo champion in the boys kiddies division with 7.5 points, including a sweep of the last four rounds, as he towed Nezil Merilles of Canubing National High, who wound up solo second with seven points, to the grand finals.
