HUM TV Drama Serial - Aabro

Ohkay so, finally after so many weeks Aabro ended & I am glad that the writer didn’t disappoint us in the end & gave us a complete ending that the viewers were hoping for. However, I do believe that in stead of showing the elders, they should’ve shown the youngsters more focused on their education, careers & future, but nevertheless, it’s all well when it ends well.

It was good to see that everyone around Aabro & Afsheen started to realize that Aabro raised Afsheen properly. Abid was always forced to draw a comparison between Fauzia & Aabro’s upbringing & for the right reasons because he could see that Fauzia never really paid attention to their children like Aabro paid to her one & only daughter. Then after Abid, it was Samra who couldn’t help notice how groomed & well-brought up Afsheen was in comparison to Ahmed & Aima. What I liked the most about the last episode was that they showed how a good attitude can force people to change their thinking, yes, it is a slow process & it doesn’t pay off quickly but in the end it works because a good attitude never goes unnoticed. It only took a few weeks for Samra to realize that Aabro raised Afsheen properly & did everything she could to make sure that Afsheen doesn’t turn out to be like her mother.

Ahmed decided to elope with Afsheen because he knew that his grandmother Zubaida won’t ever let him get married to Afsheen & somehow Afsheen gave in to the pressure too because she was scared that Zubaida will forcefully get her married to the uncle who wasn’t her match at all. I liked how in the end they showed that everyone realized their mistakes & also understood the circumstances that they created were the the main reason why Ali & Aabro eloped in the first place. Sakina realized that it was her decision of getting Aabro married to a peon that forced Aabro to leave the house & take such a huge step, that is why that conversation between Aabro & Sakina somewhat convinced Afsheen that she was right in her decision of eloping with Ahmed because the circumstances weren’t doing a favor upon them, which later changed but initially it was exactly what Afsheen wanted to hear to put her mind & heart to ease that hers & Ahmed’s decision was right.

Zubaida didn’t change at all & she continued to be stern & rigid with Ali, she made sure to let Ali know that he could only redeem himself if he sacrificed the happiness of his only child in order to please his mother. Zubaida never really allowed anyone to have a soft spot for Ali’s family in their hearts that is why when she saw Tayyaba & Samra speaking in Ali’s favor, she brushed it under the carpet & tried to talk them out of the sympathy they were feeling for Ali, Aabro & Afsheen.

Finally, Aima paid the price for maturing up way before her age & that is why she landed herself in deep trouble where her family had to get involved too. She might be innocent but this was exactly the wake-up call & a reality check that Fauzia along with Zubaida needed in order to realize that they were wrong. Even Samra couldn’t resist confessing that Fauzia was supposedly the one who belonged to their own family but still she couldn’t raise her children with the same morals & values that their mothers endorsed.

Coming to the final conversation between Afsheen & Ahmed which changed everyone’s perspective, I must say it was written beautifully. All the things that Afsheen said went to show that Aabro & Ali succeeded in raising her up properly & she made sure to let Ahmed know that at times it is important to put everyone else’s happiness ahead of your own because that’s exactly what brings more happiness & satisfaction to you. All the things Afsheen said made Zubaida realize how wrong she was all this while & it was good to see her realizing her mistakes & taking an initiative of apologizing to Aabro because she knew she put her through so much that she didn’t deserve at all. The ending scenes of the drama were good & what I loved the most was the mention of Afsheen & Ahmed’s education that was stated by Abid. I so wanted to hear either Ahmed or Afsheen say that it was important for them to educate themselves in order to be able to help their families but that thing was taken care of by Abid, which was a huge relief.

Overall, the message of the drama was good but it would’ve made a bigger impact if they had kept it short & to the point because when dramas like Aabro that have a very been-there-seen-that sort of a feel to them end up getting dragged, that’s when they lose the charm & make it hard for the viewers to keep their interest alive in the show. I wish in stead of showing Zubaida’s realization in the last episode that too for the first & the last time, they had shown her realizing her mistakes in a few other episodes too because that way her apology would’ve made more impact & would’ve looked more heart-felt. Also, I do feel that they shouldn’t have shifted the focus away from the education because that was an even more important message that needed to be conveyed. Anyways, massive props to all the actors for performing brilliantly & doing justice to their characters. I liked the acting of the actors playing the characters of Afsheen & Ahmed the most. Eeshal was good as Aabro too but I hope she works on her dialogue delivery & improves her acting the next time we get to see her in her new project. Noor Hassan did a pretty decent job as Ali & Farah Shah gave the character of Zubaida everything she could to make her seem so detestable & despicable. Overall, it was a good drama that went haywire in the end but surprisingly ended at a good & a complete note which served as a redemption. Please share your say about the overall journey of Aabro.

Controversy

Last year the HUM Awards were clouded by controversy when Badar Khalil who was there to receive a life achievement award left her award on her seat and left the show shortly after she received the award. She talked to Dawn News even at that time and said that she was appalled by the treatment meted out to her on the award show. Apparently she was asked to sit in the backseat because Fawad Khan had to sit in her place.

Badar Khalil left for Canada shortly after this incident so no one ever got a chance to ask her what had happened in person. Also, she announced that she was not going to continue with acting because she was done with it after everything that happened at HUM Awards.

Faisal Qureshi invited Badar Khalil to her show. She said that she had forgiven everyone but even then she narrated the incident once again, she said,

“I had just received my award and I was sitting in my seat right next to Sultana Siddiqui in the front. She got a call from Fawad Khan, I could hear he was saying that he won’t come to the show if he did not get the front seat to sit with her. That is when Sultana Siddiqui asked me to go sit in the back seat. My problem with this whole thing was that why didn’t she ask Momina Duraid, her daughter in law who was sitting on the other side to leave her seat for Fawad Khan.”

She said that she did not blame Fawad Khan,

“It wasn’t Fawad Khan’s fault, it was Sultana Siddiqui’s fault because as a host she was the one responsible for this decision. When she asked me to go sit in the back I left my award there and left!! These awards mean nothing to me, they are nothing but decorations. What really matters is the respect we get when we are invited to these award functions.”

Badar Khalil said that PTV gave her life achievement award too and they truly gave her the welcome and respect that was fit for someone who was getting such an award. She said,

“I cannot be fake, I cannot sugar coat things. Now the same Sultana Siddiqui who did this to me met me like nothing had happened! I cannot do that. I have given this industry 50 years and I have done it all on the basis of my talent. I have never resorted to buttering to get anything in m career.”

Badar Khalil also said that she was leaving for Canada and had no plans of coming back. She said she wanted to teach acting there if everything worked out.

PEMRA Issues a notice against UDARI

In a shocking development PEMRA issued a notice to HUM TV after the last episode of drama serial Udaari went on air on Sunday 8th of May. Drama serial Udaari is a joint production of MD Productions and Kashaf foundation. The drama has been written by the famous writer Farhat Ishtiaq and is inspired from real life events. The drama serial attempts to raise awareness about the issue of child abuse.

The last episode showed Ahsan Khan’s character harassing Urwa Hocane’s character when she goes to his house to get something. Ahsan Khan’s character’s real intentions were revealed in the last two episodes. PEMRA has taken ‘notice’ of this new development because they say that they got many complaints from the viewers especially the parents because they thought that this drama was not a family drama. According to the experts at PEMRA the scenes and events that have been shown in the last two episodes show the dirty mindset of those who are behind this show and these scenes are against the ‘societal norms’!!!

Udaari is being liked by the viewers for a different storyline and for handling a very sensitive subject extremely sensitively but it looks like PEMRA tends to disagree.

To answer this it is necessary to study carefully the difference between the Islamic concept of spirituality and that of other religions and ideologies. Without a clear understanding of this difference it often happens that, when talking about the spirituality in Islam, many of the vague notions associated with the word ‘spiritual’ unconsciously come to mind; it then becomes difficult for one to comprehend that this spirituality of Islam not only transcends the dualism of spirit and matter but is the nucleus of its integrated and unified concept of life.

Spirituality in Islam

Body-Soul Conflict

The idea which has influenced most the climate of philosophical and religious thought is that body and soul are mutually antagonistic, and can develop only at each other’s expense. For the soul, the body is a prison and the activities of daily life are the shackles which keep it in bondage and arrest its growth. This has inevitably led to the universe being divided into the spiritual and the secular.

Those who chose the secular path were convinced that they could not meet the demands of spirituality, and thus they led highly material and hedonistic lives. All spheres of worldly activity, whether social, political, economic or cultural, were deprived of the light of spirituality; injustice and tyranny were the result.

Conversely, those who wanted to tread the path of spiritual excellence came to see themselves as ‘noble outcasts’ from the world. They believed that it was impossible for spiritual growth to be compatible with a ‘normal’ life. In their view physical self-denial and mortification of the flesh were necessary for the development and perfection of the spirit. They invented spiritual exercises and ascetic practices which killed physical desires and dulled the body’s senses. They regarded forests, mountains and other solitary places as ideal for spiritual development because the hustle and bustle of life would interfere with their meditations. They could not conceive of spiritual development except through withdrawal from the world.

This conflict of body and soul resulted in the evolution of two different ideals for the perfection of man. One was that man should be surrounded by all possible material comforts and regards himself as nothing but an animal. Men learnt to fly like birds, swim like fish, run like horses and even terrorize and destroy like wolves but they did not learn how to live like noble human beings. The other was that the senses should be not only subdued and conquered but extra-sensory powers awakened and the limitations of the sensory world done away with. With these new conquests men would be able to hear distant voices like powerful wireless sets, see remote objects as one does with a telescope, and develop powers through which the mere touch of their hand or a passing glance would heal the un-healable.

The Islamic viewpoint differs radically from these approaches. According to Islam, God has appointed the human soul as His Khalifah (vicegerent) in this world. He has invested it with a certain authority, and given it certain responsibilities and obligations for the fulfillment of which He has endowed it with the best and most suitable physical frame. The body has been created with the sole object of allowing the soul to use it in the exercise of its authority and the fulfillment of its duties and responsibilities. The body is not a prison for the soul, but its workshop or factory; and if the soul is to grow and develop, it is only through this workshop. Consequently, this world is not a place of punishment in which the human soul unfortunately finds itself, but a field in which God has sent it to work and do its duty towards Him.

Therefore spiritual development should not take the form of a man turning away from this workshop and retreating into a corner. Rather, man should live and work in it, and give the best account of himself that he can. It is in the nature of an examination for him; every aspect and sphere of life is, as it were, a question paper: the home, the family, the neighborhood, the society, the market-place, the office, the factory, the school, the law courts, the police station, the parliament, the peace conference and the battlefield, all represent question papers which man has been called upon to answer. If he leaves most of the answer-book blank, he is bound to fail the examination. Success and development are only possible if man devotes his whole life to this examination and attempts to answer all the question papers he can.

Islam rejects and condemns the ascetic view of life, and proposes a set of methods and processes for the spiritual development of man, not outside this world but inside it. The real place for the growth of the spirit is in the midst of life and not in solitary places of spiritual hibernation.

Criterion of Spiritual Development

We shall now discuss how Islam judges the development or decay of the soul. In his capacity as the vicegerent (Khalifah) of God, man is answerable to Him for all his activities. It is his duty to use all the powers which he has been given in accordance with the Divine will. He should utilize to the fullest extent all the faculties and potentialities bestowed upon him for seeking God’s approval. In his dealings with other people he should behave in such a way as to try to please God. In brief, all his energies should be directed towards regulating the affairs of this world in the way in which God wants them to be regulated. The better a man does this, with a sense of responsibility, obedience and humility, and with the object of seeking the pleasure of the Lord, the nearer will he be to God. In Islam, spiritual development is synonymous with nearness to God. Similarly, he will not be able to get near to God if he is lazy and disobedient. And distance from God signifies, in Islam, the spiritual fall and decay of man.

From the Islamic point of view, therefore, the sphere of activity of the religious man and the secular man is the same. Not only will both work in the same spheres; the religious man will work with greater enthusiasm than the secular man. The man of religion will be as active as the man of the world indeed, more active in his domestic and social life, which extends from the confines of the household to the market square, and even to international conferences.

What will distinguish their actions will be the nature of their relationship with God and the aims behind their actions. Whatever a religious man does, will be done with the feeling that he is answerable to God, that he must try to secure Divine pleasure, that his actions must be in accordance with God’s laws. A secular person will be indifferent towards God and will be guided in his actions only by his personal motives. This difference makes the whole of the material life of a man of religion a totally spiritual venture, and the whole of the life of a secular person an existence devoid of the spark of spirituality.

When is Google's birthday? Quite Confusing

Google Doodle celebrates the internet giant's 17th birthday on September 27, but the date has varied over the years

Google is celebrating its 17th birthday with a commemorative Doodle harking back to the 1990s.

The image, features a retro style, plastic PC, lava lamp and even 1998's "Google!" Logo, features on Google's homepage on September 27, which the internet giant has chosen as its birthday.

However, not even Google seems to really know when it was formed. Since 2006, it has celebrated its birthday on September 27, but the year before that, In 2004, its 6th birthday Doodle went online on September 7 and in the year before that, it was September 8.

In fact, none of these dates seem to have any particular relevance. The company's history has its incorporation date in 1998 - the nearest thing to a corporate birthday - as September 4.

Google's confusion in 2013, admitting it had celebrated its birthday on four different dates, but September 27 now seems to have stuck. The company may have just chosen the date because it was what the first birthday Doodle in 2002 used.

The 17th birthday Google will appear in almost every country in the world, according to the Doodle blog, with the USA one big exception.

Ali Abbas from Jamshoro, Sindh, is a sought after painter by the art Galleries. His most recent paintings and drawings which indicate maturity in line and use of colours were showcased at Ejaz Galleries, Lahore on December 22, 2011 until December 29; the diligent painter keeps painting all night which result in his solo show at Unicorn Gallery, Karachi on December 28’ 2011 before dismounting his exhibits from Ejaz Galleries. Marjorie Husain is a seasoned writer on art and has many books on art to her credit. She labels Abbas’s paintings and drawings as ‘Colours of Optimism”.

Husain, commenting on Abbas’s works writes: “The drawings and paintings of Ali Abbas convey realism portrayed with dignity and compassion. There is a touching simplicity in the delightful cameos he produces, often highlighted by carefully rendered areas of bright coloration. His subjects appear as transitory figures sheltering in temporary abodes, nomadic and wandering according to seasons and circumstances. Ali captures this phenomenon skillfully, yet the emotions evoked in the portrayals of mother and child images, can be likened to the feelings aroused in the Madonna works of the Byzantine era, an element of humanity that is shared through times and terrains.

“Gazing on Abbas’s work, the viewer enjoys the movement of the folk dancers composed of unbroken linear strokes, and in the painted works the brushstrokes are suggestive of dust storms or perhaps a symbol of the difficulties faced by the Nomadic tribes whose way of life is ageless.

“These are artworks in which light catches gleams of colour on a worn costume creating excitement and optimism in the drab surroundings. The artist details his subject with respect and compassion, the forms are graceful, the faces sensitively delineated, one discovers hands and feet faultlessly portrayed - the test of a true artist. In Ali Abbas’s work the focus on the subject conveys the essence of humanity which is universal.”

(Abbas was introduced to the Karachi art scene by Alliance Francais de Karachi in 2002; it was a solo show titled Sindh Gypsies. His second solo show titled Gurd Baad was held at Chawkandi Art in 2005. Later, in 2007 at Chawkandi he displayed his paintings titled The Roots. He was given space as a solo artist at Afrand Art Gallery, Tehran and Ejaz galleries Lahore in 2008. Chawkandi Art hosted him in 2009. He was invited to Pakistan Embassy, Abu Dhabi and Ejaz Galleries Lahore for solo exhibitions in 2010.

Ali Abbas made himself known as a watercolour painter at his early exhibitions at home and abroad. Abbas has been experimenting with the medium. After his solo show at Alliance Francaise de Karachi in 2002, he worked with mixed media for his second solo exhibition at Chawkandi Art. That also was a drama of life in a desert in mixed media on paper. Abbas has focused on Thar as a bare reality. His palette is close to reality concentrating on sandy atmosphere and situations arising out of sand storm. The bright coloured dresses and amulets of women folk also remain under the spell of sand. In this aura Ali Abbas creates situations focused on living of the people against an ocean of sand.

With a Masters degree in Fine Arts from Jamshoro University, Sindh, Abbas became a teacher of Fine Arts in his Alma Mater in 1992 and remained there for ten years. He helped establish Department of Fine Arts at Iran Cultural Centre in Jamshoro, which is functioning till today. In between he came to Karachi and taught at the Central Institute of Arts and Crafts for one year. He has also worked in the Department of Architecture, Mehran University. Currently he is working as Assistant Professor, Department of Fine Arts, Centre of Excellence in Art and Design, Mehran University Jamshoro.)

The Tree of Life located in a desert in Bahrain is the only vegetation as far as the eye can see.
It is approximately 400 years old. It reaches 32 feet high and it’s about 1.2 miles from Jebel Dukhan, or Mountain of Smoke, which is a famous hill in Bahrain that is the highest point of the country.

The tree is on top of a 25 foot high sandy hill. It has become a local tourist attraction, since it is the only tree growing in the area. More than 50,000 tourists visit the Tree of Life every year. Unfortunately due to the tourism, the tree is damaged by graffiti carvings. It is said to be the site for cults to practice ancient rites.

The tree is of the Prosopis genus which is known for adapting well to arid environments with the deepest known root systems.
Interestingly and randomly, the tree is mentioned in the movie “L.A. Story.”

Protests across Pakistan against 'blasphemous' film

The controversial American film on Islam which has irked Muslims across the world has also resulted in several protests across Pakistan demanding the expulsion of the US Ambassador and cut off in ties between the two countries.

Majlis Wahdatul Muslameen rallied from the G-5 Imam Bargah in Islamabad up to the US embassy on Friday, however, the strict security arrangements at the embassy prevented any untoward incident during the protest. In a similar protest in Libya, the protesters had attacked the US embassy and also killed the US Ambassador to Libya, after which security at all US embassies across the world was tightened.
The protesters in Islamabad said that the film should be banned across the world and the filmmakers should be severely punished. They also demanded that the US should apologise for the film. Pakistan, India and Afghanistan have already blocked access to the movie, while US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton maintained that the movie was not supported by the US.
Around 400 protesters rallied in front of Islamabad’s Laal Masjid after Friday prayers, following a call from JI.
They called for the handover of Terry Jones, an American Christian pastor linked with the film, who has drawn protests in the past for burning the Holy Quran.
“Terry Jones should be handed to us for a trial in the sharia court,” a speaker at the rally told the gathering.
The Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) which held protests in several cities including Peshawar, Karachi and Swat, claiming that the movie was supported by the US, and it was trying to provoke extremism by using different tactics. The party members and supporters threatened to attack the US embassy in Islamabad if the Pakistani government did not protest against the film.
JI Chief Munawar Hassan, addressing a protest rally in the Nazimabad area of Karachi, demanded that the US government ban the movie and also demanded the Interior ministry of Pakistan lodge a protest with the US ambassador.
The rally in Lahore was organised by Tehreek-e-Hurmat-e-Rasool which was taken out from Green Chowk to Sohrab Khan, while the one in Multan was organised by Jamiat Talba Arbia and Shehri Mahaz. Protesters threw shoes at US and Israeli flags and set them on fire.
In Lahore, Hafiz Saeed, head of the Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) charity, seen as a front for a banned militant organisation, led a 500-strong rally against the film.
Saeed – who has a $10 million US government bounty on him – urged the Pakistan government to summon the American ambassador to protest over the film.
“We condemn this conspiracy of producing (an) anti-Islam film. Such blasphemous acts are intentional conspiracies from the US and we will not tolerate it,” he told the rally.
Apart from religious entities, the district bar lawyers also protested against the film in Sargodha and boycotted all court proceedings. They said that the government should demand the US to offer a formal apology for hurting the sanctity of the Muslims or shut down their embassy.
The lawyers also demanded a boycott of all American products.
