January 2012 - Chess Activity continues....

The following has been planned at DATCC for the next three weeks, with at least one event filling up the weekend activity at our center. It is a mix of Open and Invitation events but players, supporters, fans and spectators are welcome to join the fun!

15th January 2012 - TOMORROW!
Cerdik Catur Enterprise will be conducting its first 2012 Semi-Pro series starting at 8:30am tomorrow with players registration. The 7 round event is expected to attract more than 100 players and interested players are advised to register early as spaces would be limited.

20th to 24th January - Next Weekend
The 17 Chess Club will be organizing its first 17CC Invitational FIDE Rated Round Robin tournament starting from Friday, 20th January at 7pm. The 9 round chess event is expected to close by 24th January 2012 at 6:00pm. The event is divided into 2 groups of 10 players who have been invited to participate in this 2012 inaugural 17CC event

On 21st January, PETRONAS will be having its quarterly chess event at the Center for its Chess Club. The small in-house event usually sees 10 players from various department within PETRONAS competing in its quarterly championship.

Although both events are invitational and limited events, spectators are welcome to join and watch the matches as it happens. Sets and clocks are also provided for those who would like to play a match with other visitors within the center.

29th January 2012 - The last weekend in January
For the last weekend in January, InSoFar Chess Academy makes it return to the calendar with its first series of tournaments for 2012 on Sunday, 29th January starting at 8.30am.

3 events are being held concurrently starting with Rapid Open event offering a prize money worth more than RM2,800 - vouchers and cash prizes combined. For the first time, the event will be submitted for National Rating calculation hence players have the opportunity to improve their National ranking if they do well in this event.

The next 2 events are the Open and Junior Scholarship event which offers staggered payout of more than RM5000 over the next few months.

Entry fees are set at RM20 and RM50 depending on the type of events that the player is interested to play.

DATCC New Year Blitz

What better way to usher the New Year than playing blitz! After all the partying and happening that you may experience on New Year midnight, and nursing the hangover, the tiring and "painful" experience of celebrating the coming of 2012, perhaps it is best to relax and enjoy some chess - on the 2nd day of the New Year.

It will be a good time to reflect with others - on chess related issues, on how we (or I) can improve our chess playing skills for 2012. For me, perhaps its about reflecting whether I should continue (or discontinue with chess) and seeing friends and chess players, may just nudge that desire into higher gear (or lower - looking at the flip side of the coin).

In any case, do drop by at DATCC on 2nd January for us to get some serious cracking on Blitz Chess - DATCC style!

A total prize fund of RM500 has been set aside with the winner set to take home RM200 for his (or her!) effort. It will be a 15 rounds of pure fun chess with entry fees set at RM20 each player - regardless of age (and title!!! Just in case Mok Tze Meng wants to play....)

Registration starts at 10:00am with Round 1 schedule at 10:30am. Round 1 to 8 will be played before lunch (until 12:30pm) and Round 9 will restart at 2:00pm and Round 15 is expected to start at 3:30pm and conclude at 3:45 pm, just in time for the prize giving ceremony at 4:00pm.

4th DATCC KL Team Open Chess Championship - A hectic Round 7

Folks.... Round 8 on Saturday to start at 9:00am and Round 9 at 2:30pm.

As for Round 7, the traffic in KL was unbelievable and with scattered flooding in certain areas in KL, and the SMART tunnel was closed to divert rising waters, many players found themselves stuck in traffic jams and a few games were forfeited due to non-arrivals. Saprin and family was 10 minutes away from giving away 4 points to their opponent PETRONAS Seahorse and on Table 1, whilst young Yeoh Li Tian had to forfeit his game, Najib on board managed to arrive at the tournament hall with only 1 minute to spare - and the opponent not arriving on time (Max came in about 8:45pm and was disappointed that he had to give away the point). Yeoh Li Tian also arrived just before Max but opponent Nor Ilhamuddin already left the crime scene.

Suffering worse were PJMIM who had to forfeit 2 boards and BERNAMA Team forfeiting 3 boards.

With the conclusion of Round 7, and the remaining 2 rounds to be played this Saturday, the race for the lead is very tight between 3 teams - Kelantan, Too Less Ordinary and Najib's Rojak Team. Kelantan and Too Less Ordinary both scored perfect 4 points to stay ahead in the lead at first and second respectively, followed closely by Najib's Rojak Team at third place - with only 1.5 points separating the 3 teams.

Following behind with 2.5 points behind Najib's Rojak Team is 17 Chess Club and another 1 point behind the DATCC Senior'S Team.

Round 8 will be the telling points as the top team will vie to continue their good run and maintain their lead but, with the bottom teams having the ability to steal 1 or 2 valuable points, the event is not over until the fat lady sings! The pairing for the last round will be very crucial and teams that can score a perfect 4-0 in the last 2 rounds will definitely jump up the table.

4th DATCC KL Team Open Chess Championship - The Game Continues....

After 2 weeks break to make way for the ASIAN Amateur and the Penang Heritage Open, the 4th installation of the DATCC KL Team Open Chess continues with Round 7 on Tuesday, 13th Decembe2011 at 7:00pm.

The championship will conclude this weekend on Saturday, 17th December 2011 starting at 9:00am with Round 8 and Round 9 to start at 2:30pm.

4th NATIONAL JUNIOR CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP 2011 - 19th to 23rd December 2011

The Malaysian Chess Federation will be organizing the 4th National Junior Chess Championship from 19th December to 23rd December at DATCC, Wilayah Complex, Jalan Munshi Abdullah, Kuala Lumpur.

As per the previous editions, the championship will be played over 9 rounds using Swiss Pairing system with a time control of 90 minutes plus 30 seconds increment per move per player from move 1.

The event is open only to Malaysian citizens born on or after 1991 i.e. 20 years of age and below, and the Champion will be awarded the title National Junior Masters by the Malaysian Chess Federation.

Registration fees is RM60 for players with a FIDE rating and those without FIDE rating, the entry fees shall be RM100. The closing date for registration shall be 16th December 2011 and additional penalty fees shall be imposed for those who register after the closing date.

4th DATCC KL Team Open Chess Championship - Pairing Round 7

With the ASIAN AMATEUR and PENANG OPEN being held almost back to back from 25th November until 10th December, the 4th DATCC KL TEAM OPEN CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP is taking a 2 weeks break before resuming with Round 7 on Tuesday, 13th December 2011 at 7:00pm

The race is now tight between Najib' Rojak Team with 17 points and Kelantan Chess Association who is just half a point behind. It was an interesting encounter at Table 2 when Too Less Ordinary, one of the earlier favorites, drew with the up and coming Renegade Team. Renegade Team seems to improve its strength as Roshan joins his World Youth Teammate Wong Jianwen to provide more "muscle" on board 1 and 2.

As usual, Carikomputer continues its trend of "stealing point" on board 1 with Saprin overcoming a strong challenge from Nor Ilhamuddin to secure his team's single point.

DATCC Seniors Team erratic performance went for the better last week when it won 3.5 - 0.5 against PJMIM. On the other hand, BERNAMA managed to secure its first point against SWORDFISH when Thamitran Selvendran won against Abdul Rahman Anuar.

The race is still wide open and the pairing for Round 7 indicates some interesting and unlikely pairings and with that, more surprising results to come. With only 12 teams playing 9 rounds of play, the last 2 rounds will probably be determine by luck as each team would have met all the teams except for four(4) teams and with the likelihood that the bottom teams will float up to meet the stronger teams, it is imperative that the leading teams to start creating the necessary buffer to avoid last minute point surge from the middle pack.

ASIAN AMATEUR 2011 - Centurion....

The list of players grew to hit the centennial mark with veteran Bustaman Harun reconfirming his participation, MCF VP Haslindah Ruslan and junior player Mohd Faizal Roslan making up the 100th player for the event.

The event is starting this 25th November and players are advised to attend the player's meeting to ask questions and provide any concerns that they may have. The itinerary for Friday is as follows:

ASIAN AMATEUR 2011 - Final List to Date.... but more expected to come

With one more week to go before the start of the ASIAN AMATEUR OPEN and WOMEN CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP 2011, the list of players now stands at 97 with a few more players confirming their entries within the last few days. Aside from Malaysia with more than 60 players participating in the Championship, UAE has the second biggest contingent with 15 players and Singapore came in next with 10 players. Nepal will also be sending 4 players and Brunei with 2 players. Other countries which have confirmed entries are India, Philippines and Indonesia. The organizer is still waiting for further confirmation from Australia and Sri Lanka.

Whilst the extended closing date for the event has already passed, and the target number of participants has already been reached, the organizer will continue to welcome late entries for the event to allow for more players - local or otherwise, to participate on a continental platform rarely hosted by Malaysia. This international event will definitely allow the chance for local players, mostly with average strength, to shine on a higher level playing field and successful outing in this championship can definitely invite further improvement to our hidden talents.

The organizer is confident that the number of entries will continue to pour in especially from the international community as players began to clear their travelling arrangements, visas and leaves. There are also rumors that some effort are being made to subsidize entries for aspiring young junior players to offer them the opportunity to experience playing in an international event.

The latest listing with rating points and countries are as follows. Be on the look out for more regular updates in the days to come as we approach closer to the opening day.

4th DATCC KL Team Open Chess Championship - 'twas the night....

It was another interesting Round 5 with top 2 pairs on Table 1 and 2 ended in critical stalemates which allowed most of the lower teams to catch up. 'twas almost significant scores for the lower boards with 3.5 points earned by the winning team on Table 3 to Table 5. On Table 6, DATCC Seniors Team scored a perfect score against BERNAMA Chess Team with 4 - 0.

On Table 1, Too Less Ordinary was without the service of top board Ian Udani but so was Kelantan Chess Team as its top board IM Mas Hafizul has left for Palembang to represent the country in SEA Games. Too Less Ordinary slotted its 10th board with Syazwan who was paired to play against Azahari Mohd Nor. The Teams tied at 2-2 with both top boards ended in draw whilst Nik of Kelantan triumphing over his counterpart Hezri on board 3 but Azhari losing his game against Syazwan on board 4

On Table 2, all four boards were stretched to the max and were the last ones to finish for the night. Hashim Jusoh proved too strong for Song Wai Cheng on board 4 but Yeoh Chin Seng made up for the loss by overpowering Shamsol on Board 3. Similar to the scores on Table 1, both board 1 and 2 on Table 2 yielded drawing scores for Li Tian and Cheok Fong against Kamalariffin and Kamaluddin respectively.

On Table 3, 17 Chess Club triumphed over PJMIM scoring 3.5 against 0.5, and on Table 4, Seahorse PETRONAS won over its sister's team Swordfish PETRONAS with the same scoreline. On table 5, Renegade put up a strong showing to win yet again with the same scoreline 3.5 to 0.5 against Saprin's Carikomputer Dot Com.

Any inconvenience caused is regrettable.

With the closing date extended to 14th November,the number of players registering for the event continue to trickle in and as of earlier today, 84 players have confirmed their participation in the Amateur event. This includes 4 players from Nepal, one from Philippines and another 3 local chess players.

4th DATCC KL Team Open Chess Championship - Now the race is wide open!

It was not surprising to see "Too Less Ordinary" seated their top 4 boards - Ian, Zaidan, Fadli and Fadzil, and upon seeing IM Mok and Sumant at yesterday's SEA Games squad meeting, everyone was expecting a titanic showdown - that the Rojak Team will also field its strongest line up. It was going to be a mouth watering showdown between the top 2 teams but alas.... IM Mok was not fielded and yet, Rojak Team line up was still formidable in Sumant, Li Tian, Cheok Fung and Wai Cheng.

As the game progresses, it was rather edgy for Sumant as Ian managed to gain an advantage until the middle game when Sumant managed to produce a counter attack. The game got very tactical but in the end, it was inevitable that the game would end up in a draw.

On Board 2, Zaidan held up well playing the black pieces but Li Tian, fresh from his outing at the World U16 Team event managed to squeeze an advantage and then on, the game.

On Board 3, it was all the way for Cheah Cheok Fung and when Fadli had only 4 minutes left on his clock (compared to Cheok Fung's 20 minutes), the writing on the wall was clear. What more, the locked position with Fadli's white square bishop trapped behind his own pawns, it was easier for Cheak Fung to maneuver his Knight around the holes on the board and then on, the second full point for Rojak Team.

On Board 4, the game was a real roller coaster ride. At one point, Wai Cheng was playing well to secure a 2 pawns advantage and a strong active attacking game until he seem to have lost his piece. Then a stroke of brilliance with Fadzil having no choice but to return the piece to stop a mate in one. Similar to board 1, both players ended with Queen and Pawn ending and it was clear that it will be the second drawn game for Table 1 albeit Wai Cheng had the better time than Fadzil.

In the end, Too Less Ordinary was just ordinary and Rojak Team scoring a convincing 3-1 win over the leader. With 4 rounds ended, Rojak Team is now at the top of the table at 11.5 points - the same with Too Less Ordinary, but on a better tie break.

On Table 2, long time friend Azahari Mohd Nor played for Kelantan on Board 3 and his presence helped Kelantan to triumphed over SEAHORSE of PETRONAS with a convincing 3-1 victory.

The showdown on Table 3 was between 2 budding teams - 17 Chess Club and Nusa Mahkota Chess Club. 17 Chess Club recently added Mohd Fairin Zakaria on Board 1 and it was rather surprising that Nor Ilhamuddin was not listed as one of the players. In the end, it was 3.5 to 0.5 in favor of Nusa Mahsuri who will now meet top leader Rojak Team in Round 5

Carikomputer Dot Com scored 2 points against PJMIM with a surprising win by Saprin's eldest son on Board 2 who managed to win against the much higher rated Varien Thien. It will be a good boost for Amir Qayyim who will be participating in the ASIAN AMATEUR event later at the end of the month.

On Table 5, Dato' Tan made his inaugural appearance for this year's team event and played against Mohd Razief of SWORDFISH PETRONAS. Even though he did not secure a point for the team, DATCC Seniors Team led by Jax Tham managed to hold to a 2-2 draw against the National oilers.

On the last Table, Jianwen return from the World Youth Team event helped his team to a crushing 4-0 win over BERNAMA Chess Team. Words have it that Jianwen Youth teammate, bronze medalist Roshan Singh, will be joining the team next week, providing the Renegade Team the much needed back up in their quest to climb to the top of the chart.

With 2 teams at 11.5 points - Rojak and Ordinary, and Kelantan just half a point behind, this will be foot race to the finish between the 3 teams. But with Renegade growing from strength to strength and certain players missing from the line up to play in the SEA Games, the event is still wide open. Rojak Team will be the team that is worst hit with IM Mok, Sumant and Gregory going for the SEA Games - but the ones left behind are still a team to be reckon with led by Li Tian, Cheah Cheok Fung, Izz Saifuddin, Chin Seng and Wai Cheong who proved last night that he is "not just any other player".

2nd DATCC Destroyer Blitz Chess Weekend

With the long weekend break due to Hari Raya Haji, it was almost expected that the number of players turning up for the blitz event would be minimal and true enough, only 14 players showed up for the event.

It was also a pleasant surprise to see FM Johan Foudzi appearing to take part in the event after a rather long silence from the local chess scene.

After the smoke cleared, Zaidan Zulkipli won the event with an almost perfect score of 12.5 followed by local Abdul Shukor A Rajah with 10.5 points. Wong Jianwen shared the 3rd/4th placing with surprisingly yours truly (Najib Wahab) with 10 points each. Next in line was Mohd Fadli Zakaria with 8.5 points, Firdaus Mohd Rodzi at 6th placing with 8 points, Cheong Chin Leong 7.5 points and Johan Foudzi rounding up the winners list with 7 points to earn the 8th spot.

ASIAN AMATEUR 2011 - 76 players confirmed as of 7th November 2011

The number of players confirmed for the event has increased to 76 with a few more local entries received. Fresh from their U16 outing recently, bronze medalist, Roshan Ajeet Singh and board one player Wong Jianwen have confirmed their participation for the event. Other late entries included veteran Jax Tham Tick Hong, Taulani Tukiran and Chan Mun Fye

The organizer continue to receive inquiries for the event and with the deadline extended to 14th November, the number of participants playing for the event is expected to increase even more.

ASIAN AMATEUR 2011 - Extended Deadline to 14th November

Albeit having reached its target number of players for the ASIAN AMATEUR OPEN and WOMEN CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP 2011, MCF and the Organizing Committee have agreed to extend the deadline to register for the event to 14th November 2011.

As there has been an influx of inquiries from the international community to take part in the event, most of the foreign players have requested for extension of the deadline to facilitate travelling and scheduling arrangement.

The final listing of all the players is expected to be published by 15th November 2011

ASIAN AMATEUR 2011 - The List Increases.....

The number of players for the ASIAN AMATEUR increases to 58 confirmed entries including 12 from UAE and 1 from India which was received late last night. This does not include the few from Singapore, Nepal and Australia who are currently being processed by their respective Federations. It is expected that 10 players from our southern neighbor will play in this event, with another 5 players from Nepal and 2 players from Australia

It will eventually happen - the top seed team will play the team who is currently leading. Strength to strength, they could be about even.... Its Too Less Ordinary led by Ian Udani against Najib's Rojak Team led by IM Mok Tze Meng ... provided he can play... Else, it will be the youngster Suman Subramaniam sitting on board 1 against the "so far perfect" Ian Udani. It will be an interesting line up as Najib's Rojak Team will have Yeoh Li Tian back in the line up and the steely Cheah Cheok Fung holding well on the lower boards. Yeoh Senior is also available to play and another veteran, Song Wai Cheng should be able to hold the lower boards.

On table 2, Kelantan Team is keeping up pace with the leader and their next challenge would be against PETRONAS Seahorse, incidentally, IM Mas of Kelantan former team. On top board would be IM Mas against former teammate and an excellent player Mohd Irman Ibrahim.

On table 3, Nusa Mahkota up against 17 Chess Club with PJMIM playing against Saprin and family on table 4. DATCC Seniors Team is looking out to revenge their 2 consecutive losses and have PETRONAS Swordfish as their next rival on table 5 and on table 6, the Renegade Chess Team will go against the BERNAMA Chess Team.
