Starting a Facebook page for a brand should be an essential part of your social marketing strategy and if you haven’t done so already, I would definitely suggest doing so.

Though, I understand in the beginning it seems extremely difficult, especially if you’re on a budget and don’t have the luxury to spend money on advertising. Don’t worry, I got you covered!

Here are some ways that have worked for me (on other sites) on how to get more likes on Facebook Pages for free.

Before I continue, let me just add a shameless plug for you guys to like DatMoney’s Facebook page, where you’ll find helpful tips that includes anything from daily work routines for entrepreneurs to full business strategies, informative infographics, motivational quotes, and much more!

I haven’t had the chance to use these marketing strategies I’m going to go over for DatMoney yet (I’ve used one but I’ve been so busy that I haven’t even updated with new posts on here till now!) but these tips should help you get your first 1,000 likes on your page within the first month, if you put in the work.

Optimize Your Facebook Page Information

I think it goes without saying that you should have a profile picture and cover photo that represents your brand and what your page is going to be about, but it’s the small details you shouldn’t overlook.

Fill in all the Page Info tabs. Yes, that includes:

– Category
– Subcategory
– Facebook Web Address (you’ll have to get 25 likes first before you’re able to do this) that is easy to remember like facebook.com/yourbrandname
– Physical address (for those that work from home and don’t want to put down where you live publicly, I would suggest reading my post on Benefits Of Having A Virtual Office)
– Short and long description
– Contact information (verified companies will get a verification badge, which will help you in Facebook search results)

The more information you have filled out, the better. Not only will it help you in Facebook search engines but also Google as well. And yes, if you’re struggling to rank your site in Google, at least your Facebook page will definitely show up to direct your visitors to you.

Post Awesome Content (And Post Regularly)

People on Facebook want content and the more they have regularly, the better. Though, make sure it’s within your niche or you lose some credibility.

For instance, if you’re a Youtuber, you’ll want to engage your followers with videos they won’t see on their Youtube channels, pictures of their daily lives, etc.

If you’re a food blogger, you’ll want to share recipes, food pictures, cool cooking gadgets, etc.

If you’re a developer, helpful tips for other developers, updates on what you’re developing, etc.

The more awesome content you post, the more people will like and share with their Facebook friends. If their friends like your content, they’ll potentially like your page and then it’ll be a domino effect of sharing with their friends and their friends’ friends.

I know posting a lot of content regularly seems like a daunting task, but luckily, Facebook has a scheduling tool so you can technically schedule your posts months in advance, if you want.

Personally, I usually post 3-5 times daily for the pages I run and schedule it for the next week or so.

Steal Your Competitors Followers

You’re not actually stealing away from your competition, but you’re enticing their followers to like your page as well. Here’s what I do (with stats on a page I just started a couple weeks ago).

Do A Facebook Search For Keywords In Your Niche – Look for popular pages in your niche that post pretty regularly. I usually go with pages that have over 100,000 likes and posts at least a handful of times daily.

Add Thoughtful Comments (Or Pictures) That People Will Like – If you add a comment that lots of people will like, then your comment will be more visible to anyone looking at the comments section.

Depending on your profile picture and Facebook page name (that’s why it’s essential to optimize your page), it will entice people to click through to your page with potential of liking it.

Now if you’re able to upload a picture (some pages don’t allow adding images in comments sections) that you know will get a lot of likes, that will be even better.

For instance, if you run a food Facebook page, you should comment on other food related pages. Your brand name itself should entice people to check you out, if not, then your profile picture. If the page allows you to upload an image, try uploading a picture of your food related picture and I’m sure that will make people want to check your page out.

Like All The Comments You Agree With – Give a thumbs up to all the comments you agree with in the comments section. The more, the better. The key is to get the attention of the person commenting because they will get a notification that you liked their comment. If they’re as curious as I am, they’ll probably check you out.

I find that the comments that already have tons of likes probably won’t check out your page because they already received a bunch of notifications; which means your thumbs up will just get lost in the shuffle. If you focus on the ones that don’t have any likes, those convert a lot better.

Please, please do NOT go on a liking spree for every single comment. Eventually people will notice and there goes your reputation.

Finding More Pages To Comment On – Now at this point, you should have a bunch of new likes with the few pages you implemented this tactic on. But maybe you’re overdoing it with those few pages so you need to find even more related pages. Use your current followers for that!

Take a look at your followers profile and if it’s public, check out the other pages they’ve liked that are somewhat similar to your niche. Use this same tactic on those pages as well.

Stats Implementing This Tactic – If you’re looking to get your first 1,000 likes with just this strategy, you’ll need to average about 34 new likes each day. Now, the more followers you get and the more they share your content, the easier the likes roll in; but let’s just cut that part out of the equation so you don’t rely on it.

Here is an example of a new Facebook page I started a few weeks ago. Though, I’d like to mention that I didn’t implement this strategy every single day and usually when I did, it was when I was laying in bed, waiting (like for friends or food at a restaurant) or sitting on my throne. Sorry, too much information but it’s the truth!

As you can see in the chart, it started slow in the beginning, spiked higher (the most likes in one day on this new page was slightly over 50) the more I implemented this tactic and didn’t receive likes on days I simply didn’t have time to do it.

This was the only tactic I implemented during the beginning because I wanted to write up this post on this specifically.

The more work you invest, the more likes you’ll get. Unfortunately, I run multiple sites, multiple social media profiles (for each) so I don’t have the luxury to spend as much time. And I’m sure a lot of you guys don’t have tons of time to invest either but to get results, you have to put in the time… or spend money (on advertising or having someone do the work for you).

Promote Your Facebook Page Everywhere

On each one of your social media profiles for your brand, you should have different types of content or some sort of incentives for them to like each one. With that said, cross promote on all your social media pages and don’t forget to add a link on your emails, business cards, digital marketing materials, etc.

Basically, anywhere you can promote, you should.

Invite People To Like Your Page

Do you have a lot of personal Facebook friends? Or do you have people that like your posts but for some reason they didn’t like your page? Well, you can send out an invite for them to like your page (this is literally the only tactic I have used on DatMoney’s Facebook page).

To invite your friends from your personal page, go to your business page and on the left hand side there should be an “invite friends to like this Page” link, as shown below.

To invite people that have liked your posts, simply go to the post in which they’ve gave a thumbs up to, click on the “likes” to show who has liked it and next to each person’s name will have “invite” button, as show below.

For those that already like your page, it should have a grayed out “liked” button next to their name.

If they’re interested or they’re supportive, they’ll be glad to give your page a thumbs up.

Conclusion

At the end of the day, every page will be different when it comes to getting likes. The more generic your audience, the more likes you’ll potentially get. The more specific the niche, the harder it may seem. Just remember, it’s not about the quantity of the likes, it’s about the quality.

If you’re running a business or have a brand, then promoting on social media platforms..

If you’re running a business or have a brand, then promoting on social media platforms must be part of your marketing strategy. With that said, it is very likely one of social media platforms is Pinterest. If not, what are you waiting for?!

One of the keys to marketing on Pinterest (or any social media platform) is staying consistent; unfortunately, Pinterest does not have a scheduling feature and some of us don’t have time to invest every single day to pinning. Luckily for us, there are a bunch of great Pinterest scheduling options.

Some very good schedulers come with a fee, which I will not be highlighting in this post. I’m only going to be listing the free ones that I have personally tested out or considered trying after doing research.

Before I get into the different free scheduling options, here are some facts and stats for Pinterest that you may want to look at if you haven’t signed up already.

Pinterest Stats And Facts

– 100 million monthly active users
– 85% of Pinterest users are female
– 4.8% of Americans use Pinterest during work hours
– 45% of Pinterest users are from outside the U.S.
– 67% of Pinterest users are under the age of 40
– 66% of users use Pinterest to save things that inspire them
– 67% of Pinterest users are millennials
– 80% of millennials use Pinterest to help them find things they want to buy
– 71% of Pinterest users that use it to teach them how to do things
– 18% of Pinterest users with over $75,000 income
– 23% of Pinterest users that use it at least once a day

There are way more stats and facts that back up why Pinterest should be an essential part of your marketing strategy, especially if you’re looking to sell a product, but hopefully you got the point. With that said, here are some different options to schedule pins on Pinterest for free.

Free Pinterest Schedulers

ViralWoot (Formerly Pinwoot)

ViralWoot is probably the best overall Pinterest scheduler I have used (and continue to), but they have way more features than just that (which I’ll get into that in just a minute).

ViralWoot has the option to schedule pins by uploading images from your computer, social media sites as well as searching on their embedded Google Image Search. You can also use their bookmarks toolbar to schedule any pins from any website.

In addition to pins, you can schedule repins by using their “Search Pinterest for top pins to repin” or by copying and pasting a pin link.

Once you find an image to pin/repin, then you have the option to schedule with a specific time and date as well as the board you want to post on.

The catch: You are only allowed 100 scheduled pins/repins monthly. There is a paid option to obtain more.

Speaking of more, the other features includes, but not limited to:

– Promote your pins, in which people will repin and/or like
– Obtain more followers to your Pinterest account
– Gain more traffic to your posts/website

How it works is you earn “seeds” (which is their form of currency) by liking other pins, repinning and following other related users. You can then take those “seeds” you’ve earned to spend it on things such as promoting your pins.

Of course, you can purchase more seeds or sign up for their subscription plan, which will also unlock your 100 scheduled pins/repins monthly limit.

They also support multiple accounts.

SocialPilot.co

With SocialPilot, you can actually schedule posts for all the major social media outlets (Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin, Tumblr, Pinterest, Instagram) so that gives you more freedom and tools to work with, rather than just specific to Pinterest.

But since this post is about scheduling Pinterest pins for free, I’ll focus on that.

With the free version of SocialPilot.co, you can schedule 10 pins/repins daily, which is an ideal amount to schedule regularly.

Similar to ViralWoot, you can schedule the specific time and date for each one of your pins.

The catch: You can only connect three accounts, at most, with the free account. That may sound great since it’s free but each board on your Pinterest account counts as one. Therefore, if you have 10+ boards, you can only list three.

You can always rotate those three accounts by deleting them (on SocialPilot.co) and switching it with the other boards but I feel that takes away from scheduling pins in advance.

TrafficWonker

TrafficWonker was actually the first site I signed up for to schedule pins. It’s simplified which makes it very easy and straightforward. The best part is you can schedule way more pins daily than the previous two sites combined.

But with any free account, comes the limitations.

It is set up as a weekly calendar and you can schedule up to 72 pins per day (I haven’t actually tried to schedule that many in a day). Though, unlike ViralWoot and SocialPilot, you can’t choose the specific time and date to schedule your pins. Rather, it posts based on their schedule guide (which you can see in the screenshot below).

Also, TrafficWonker only schedules repins (needs a Pinterest pin URL) and does not support scheduling brand new pins from sites/uploads (they used to have a Firefox Extension but apparently it’s not support anymore so they discontinued it).

I also want to mention that I’ve had issues with consistency with the pins actually publishing. I started one account for one of my niche sites and the first week, only about half of the pins I scheduled published. It looks like everything is publishing fine now but I just wanted to mention that.

They also support multiple Pinterest accounts.

Other (Somewhat Free) Pinterest Scheduling Options

I have not tested out the below Pinterest schedulers but I did consider them.

ViralTag

Similar to SocialPilot, ViralTag supports the main social media sites. They offer a 14 day free trial (no credit card required) to try it out. In addition, you can obtain six months free by writing a blog post about them as well.

You can check out the details on their website.

EveryPost.me

EveryPost also features support for the main social media sites (though, reading comments on their app in the Play Store, people have been having issues with Google+).

With their free account, you can connect one channel up to three feeds and schedule 10 per day.

Again, I have not personally tested out these two but considered them.

Conclusion

With anything that comes free, there is usually some sort of catch. Though, if you are really on a budget or simply do not want to pay, you can get creative with it so you take full advantage of the free items that are given to you.

For instance, if you combine the three free Pinterest schedulers I mentioned above, that should be plenty of scheduling to be consistent enough for your followers.

I’m still in the process of testing various tactics out so I should be writing a more detailed post on things that have and haven’t worked for me on Pinterest.

Stay tuned!

If you’re part of Amazon’s Associates Program (Affiliate Marketing Program) or are considering signing up..

If you’re part of Amazon’s Associates Program (Affiliate Marketing Program) or are considering signing up for their affiliate program, you may want to read on as I highlight some key items you may be used to doing that is actually against their terms of service.

Before I get into the various items which you may have overlooked (which I certainly did!), let me just tell you my quick story and how my Amazon Associates Program account got shut down.

My Story

I’ve been an Amazon affiliate since 2009 and it was just one of the many affiliate programs I was signed up for. I signed up because I wanted different options for affiliate programs and they’re one of the biggest companies in the world.

The fact that they’re one of the biggest companies out there with tons of products to promote leads to a very trusted source for people to purchase items from. But with being one of the biggest companies, comes very strict guidelines (which I’ll get to in a minute).

Now I wasn’t an active affiliate, like most. I casually posted some of their affiliate links here and there on some smaller sites. I casually made money from them but eventually, I casually got rid of my smaller sites that contained their affiliate links.

If you guys read my Starting Fresh post, you would know I took some time away from working online. So a lot of affiliate programs I was signed up with made lots of changes while I was away.

Amazon was no different.

The time I was gone, Amazon probably updated their policies multiple times and one of the big items was the fact that you cannot put their links (or any affiliate programs links) on sites directed towards anyone under the age of 13.

Time passed. Then when I logged into my account this past fall when I was starting fresh, I see this:

Well, that sucks. Apparently I was supposed to agree to the new terms by a specific date, which I obviously did not.

Bam! Account closed.

The good news, they allowed me to create a new account. Unfortunately, I could not use the old account anymore and any revenue generated would not cash out either. Luckily, I didn’t have a balance that wasn’t cashed out already.

So, I don’t want my account closed… again. And I don’t want you guys to have your accounts at all. So, with that said, here are some items you may currently do that may be against their TOS that you may or may not be aware of.

They Do NOT Allow Cloaked Links

I almost found this out the hard way. If you’re like me, you’re so used to cloaking your affiliate links you don’t even think twice about it. On a new project I’m working on, I cloaked a handful of Amazon affiliate links, but when I went to check to see if they were working correctly, I noticed it was just pulling up a blank screen.

Initially, I thought it was the plugin I was using to cloak them. It wasn’t. Then I did research and found out it’s against their TOS.

Luckily, I caught it right away. If you’re so used to cloaking your links like it’s a natural reaction, make sure you’re not doing it with Amazon links!

They Do NOT Allow Affiliate Links In Emails

Yes, that includes RSS feed emails. This one was crazy to me. If you have a blog, include your Amazon affiliate link in your post and it gets delivered to your email subscribers, that’s against their TOS.

Basically, it’s fine if you use the affiliate links in your posts on your blog/website but the posts containing the links cannot be delivered via email.

Amy Lynn Andrews wrote an informative post about it and even contacted them directly regarding it to confirm it. She also lists some options so it doesn’t get delivered to your email subscribers but stays on your posts.

I also want to say thanks to our friend, Edie, for bringing this to my attention and having this discussion with me!

You Must Identify Yourself As An Associate

You cannot misrepresent or embellish your relationship with their program and you must state this on every site you use Amazon affiliate links on:

“[Insert your name] is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to [insert the applicable site name (amazon.com or myhabit.com)].”

Make Sure Your Information Is Up-To-Date

If they need to get in touch with you, it’ll be through email. Part of the reason why my account was closed was the fact that they couldn’t get in touch with me after numerous attempts. The email I had on file wasn’t working anymore.

Speaking of keeping your information up-to-date…

You Are Ineligible For Their Program If You Live Or Move To…

If you move to Arkansas, Maine, Missouri, Rhode Island or Vermont, you become ineligible to participate in Amazon’s affiliate program. Not only that, you have to inform them in writing promptly to let them know that.

Yep, you have to keep your information updated at all times.

A way around that is you can always sign up for a Virtual Office. If you get in contact with me, I may be able to refer you.

No Misleading Claims, Promotions, Review Ratings And Prices

This may seem like a given but keep in mind prices do change so it’s your responsibility to change it.

For instance, if you wrote “These products are all under $50” and then one of the products later increases in price, you have to change the text or remove that item from your site.

Conclusion

You should always read every TOS, policies and anything you sign up for. This applies to everything, not just Amazon.

I admit, I’m definitely guilty of skimming through them but it’s the fine print that can and will get you in trouble. Learn from my mistakes, so you don’t have to go through them firsthand.

Did I overlook anything else? Let me know in the comments!

Those that run and manage their own websites or blogs know how much work is..

Those that run and manage their own websites or blogs know how much work is required to make it successful; but I feel a lot of people don’t actually know all the work that actually goes into it. Whenever I have this conversation with people wanting to start a website or blog for the first time, they think all you have to do is provide content and that’s it.

If only it was that easy, everyone would have a successful blog.

Here are the details on what I do for each one of my websites. Hopefully those wanting to start, will get a gauge on how much work and effort goes into it and hopefully those that already run their own blogs or websites pick up something they might have missed (and please comment on things that I missed that will help me out as well!).

Items To Do Before Even Starting A Blog or Website

Brainstorm – You’ll need to brainstorm the idea, name, slogan, how to make money, how to market and if you think it will have potential to be successful or not.

Now if you’re just blogging as a passion then that’s a little different. But if you’re going to take it more serious then you’ll need to come up with a plan.

Research – Is that idea, name or slogan already taken? How much competition do you have in that niche? What can you do to differentiate your blog from others in the same niche? What’s your target audience?

Business Plan – If you’re going to take it seriously, you should have a plan. If you’re just winging it, more often than not, you’ll run into issues in the long run. In your business plan, you should go into details about such things, but not limited to:

– Vision and mission statements
– Target Audience
– Branding
– Scheduling
– Tasks
– Products, Services and Monetization
– Competition
– Promotion/Marketing Strategy
– Short and Long Term Goals

I’m sure there are items I missed but ultimately, the business plan should be a guideline you follow, refer to and revisit to check your progress as well as see what has worked, what hasn’t, etc.

Purchase Domain and Web Hosting – You can search here to see if the domain is available and you can purchase cheap web hosting through HostGator, the company I currently use.

There are many free website and blog platforms but I would recommend doing it this way from the beginning. I’ll have to write a post in the future on why you shouldn’t blog or build websites on free platforms.

Fun fact: Some of you guys already know this but DatMoney was started on a free blogging website, Blogger.com, and when I transferred to a self-hosted WordPress site, there were some headaches I had to deal with.

If you’re selling products directly from your site, have a membership service or your visitor’s submit sensitive content, you’ll need to purchase a SSL Certificate for your site as well. But if you’re just blogging or taking payments from third-party sites like Paypal, you probably don’t need one.

Setting Up The Website

Now that you already have your idea, business plan, domain and web hosting, you’re ready to set up your website. Although you can use any Content Management System (CMS) or even build your site from scratch, I use WordPress to build all my sites so I’m going to base this section on that.

Configure WordPress Through Your Hosting – I personally have my own dedicated hosting server but that’s not necessary for most people starting off. Most people will probably start off with a basic hosting account and then eventually upgrade, if needed.

HostGator has an easy installation process of WordPress so you don’t have to manually setup MySQL Databases, upload the files, etc.

Pick and Upload A WordPress Theme – Whether you want to build a custom theme/template from scratch, use a free one or purchase a premium theme, once you decide on one, you’ll need to upload it.

You can find a lot of amazing WordPress themes here.

Create Logo/Banner – You’ll want to create your own logo, pay someone to do it for you or I can do it for you for free.

Customization of WordPress Theme – Changing colors, font styles and sizes, widgets, sidebars, footer and menus. You’ll want to customize these items to fit your needs.

Updating Settings – This is separate from customizing your theme, these are the settings for your site. Here’s a quick list of what I usually change:

– Site Title
– WordPress/Site Address: I usually include the “www.” part but I know some who don’t. It’s your preference, really.
– Date/Time Format
– Update (Ping) Services
– Reading Settings: I usually display 5 posts on any given page
– Permalink: I recommend NOT using the default setting on this. I usually use a custom structure that looks like datmoney.com/postID/postname. Whatever you end up doing, I recommend including the post name.

Add/Upload WordPress Plugins Then Configure – Plugins will help your site run effectively and the way you want it to. Every website will be different based on their needs but I’m going to list the plugins I currently use here (keep in mind you’ll have to configure each one to fit your needs too):

– Akismet: Protects from spam comments
– All in One SEO Pack: Helps set up your site for SEO
– BackUpWordpress: Backs up your WordPress automatically
– Captcha: Helps prevent bot spammers from attacking
– Google Analytics: Once you set up a Google Analytics account, this plugin will help keep track of your stats
– Google XML Sitemap: Helps index your content better in search engines
– Jetpack by WordPress: More powerful features to help your WordPress
– Limit Login Attempts: Prevents brute attacks on your login
– MaxBlogPress Ninja Affiliate: Cloaks and tracks outgoing links
– OIO Ad Manager: Controls private ad space and makes it easy to deal with private advertisers
– Pinterest Pin It Button: Easy way to PIN any images
– Redirection: Manages 301 redirects and 404 errors
– Reveal IDs: Shows hidden IDs in Admin interface
– Social Media Share Icons: Helps share social media profiles
– Contact Form: Contact form to get in touch with me
– WP Block Referrer Spam: Blocks analytics spam
– WP Super Cache: Caches site to make it load faster

Create Necessary Pages – This will be different depending on your blog/site’s setup but typically “About”, “Contact” and “Privacy Policy” pages are on all pages.

I also have a Banner Ad Design page if people contact me for design work.

Navigation – Menus, related pages, categories and any items that will help your readers navigate through your site and find exactly what they’re looking for.

Other Items To Set Up

Now that you have your blog set up, for the most part, these are additional items that I recommend.

Google Analytics Account – This is the best free analytics tracking out there. Keep track of your stats, what people click on, top pages/posts, referring traffic, etc.

Google Webmaster Tools – This is an essential tool that will tell you what’s wrong with your site, if there are issues that need to be fixed/address, where you upload your Sitemap, additional stats and so on.

Social Media Accounts – If you’re going to have a social media presence, you need to set up the accounts for them and update it pretty regularly.

Email Accounts – If you’re going to set up your personal email accounts from your hosting that looks like email[at]yourwebsite[dot]com, you’ll have to create them.

SEO Accounts – Looking for keywords, checking backlinks, pagerank, etc, you’ll need to sign up and possibly pay for some of those accounts.

Email/RSS Subscription Service – Building an email list is essential and there are free services but eventually you’ll probably upgrade to a paid service for more options and benefits.

Legal Documents – If you end up treating your website or blog as a business, you’ll need to set up a sole proprietorship or LLC for your business.

Third-Party Sites For Monetization – Whether you’re going to display PPC ads, affiliate links, sell your own products or set up workshops, you’re going to have to set up accounts for all the companies. This will be different for everyone.

Content and Marketing

At this point, you have your site set up and signed up for all the required items that will help you succeed. Now you have to create content and market.

Content – This goes without explaining but you need content for your site. You’ll also need content for social media platform if you promote on them as well as content if guest posting is one of your methods of promotion/building backlinks.

Images – You’ll need some visuals for your site and if you’re going to promote on social media.

Social Media Marketing – You’ll need to provide content for each social media platform you’re using to market. Each social media platform’s content should be slightly different. You don’t want to promote the same exact items on each one (depends on your blogs content).

You’ll probably need to create images, templates and/or content for each one. For example, Instagram is all images and short videos so if you’re promoting on there, you’ll have to create that content to upload.

Search Engine Optimization – Build links, use keywords and anchor texts, etc so you can hopefully rank on the first page of a popular search term to get search engine traffic.

Other Marketing Strategies – Email marketing, paid advertising, etc, you’ll need to manage and track those items.

Test And Analyze Stats

There’s a lot of trial and error involved. What works for me may not necessarily work for you and vice versa so everyone should do their own testing to see what works and what doesn’t. I can’t stress this enough but test, test, test! You should test everything from ad location, promotional methods, color schemes, link building, click-throughs, basically, anything and everything to see what works specifically for you and what you should cut out.

Analyzing stats will help determine what works and what doesn’t. You know what they say, “numbers don’t lie”.

Conclusion

I’d like to think that “if you build it, they will come”, but that’s not always the case. You can have some of the best content in the world but like the saying goes, “if a tree falls and no one is around, does it make a sound?”

I’m sure I missed a whole bunch of items from this list but the point was to show that a lot of work and effort is required. It’s not as simple as writing posts and hoping to be successful. Hard work goes a long way but if you enjoy what you do, then it doesn’t really feel like work.

Or you can just outsource a majority of the work too. Hey, that is an option!
