This represents a premium of 52 per cent over the closing price of SuccessFactors' shares on December 2, the Germany-based firm said yesterday in a statement.

SuccessFactors, a provider of employee management software, has more than 3,500 customers and over 15 million subscribers in 168 countries. SAP is the one of the world's largest business software companies, with more than 54,000 employees in over 50 countries worldwide, including India.

"SAP AG and SuccessFactors, Inc, announced that SAP's subsidiary, SAP America, Inc, has entered into a definitive merger agreement with SuccessFactors... pursuant to which a subsidiary of SAP would offer to acquire all outstanding shares of common stock of SuccessFactors for $ 40 per share in cash, representing an enterprise value of about $ 3.4 billion," it added.

The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2012.
The acquisition will add to SAP's capabilities as a provider of cloud applications, platforms and infrastructure. The combination of SAP and SuccessFactors will establish an advanced end-to-end offering of cloud and on-premise solutions for managing all relevant business processes.

"The cloud is a core of SAP's future growth and the combination of SuccessFactors' leadership team and technology with SAP will create a cloud powerhouse. The acquisition will help us address the top priority for CEOs globally -- managing people and talent," SAP Co-CEO Bill McDermott said.

"Together, SAP and SuccessFactors will create tremendous business value for customers, with potent synergies to accelerate our growth in the cloud," he added.

SuccessFactors Founder and CEO Lars Dalgaard said, "This is a revolutionary combination of proven capabilities that will allow SuccessFactors to accelerate our roadmap by 10 years and bring the world's leading application knowledge and intellectual property to our customers through the cloud and the largest applications customer base instantly."

Source : Economic Times

While, Infosys was cautious; Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Cognizant and Wipro were very optimistic on demand for IT products.

Infosys had warned of dipping of demand due to project delays in deteriorating environment. "Economic uncertainties are slowing down decisions," SD Shibulal, also a co-founder of Infosys, said at the Reuters India Investment Summit in Bangalore. "We're clearly seeing it. The slowness has increased in the last month or month and a half," he said. Infosys had forecast quarter-on-quarter revenue growth of 3.2-4.5 percent for the October-December period. The company has backed its full-year dollar revenue growth view of 17.1-19.1 percent.

Cognizant on the other hand is very positive about demand for IT services and products. Last month, Cognizant inked a multi-year agreement with pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca to deliver comprehensive biostatistics and medical reporting services for generating clinical study reports.

IT companies have devised strategic plans to grow newly acquired businesses and verticals and also to enhance existing relationships.

S Mahalingam, CFO, TCS said, "There is a cause for concern at this moment of time, but in case of a specific slowdown, we have not seen any trendsetting as of yet."

As the Rupee depreciated, CFOs across Indian IT companies huddled inside their boardrooms, to assess the impact. The $70-billion India's IT-BPO industry, for the first time, is not so exuberant about small gains in operating margins due to a Rupee fall. TCS, Infosys, Cognizant, Wipro and HCL Tech - have together hedged close to $5 billion in hedges, mostly around Rs45-49 to a dollar, which prevents them from expecting a windfall gain.

Infosys and TCS have long maintained operating margins in the high twenties. But stiff competition from global players such as IBM and Accenture has put margins under pressure.

TCS which launched an integrated information technology solution for Small and Medium Business (SMB) segment recently said it was targeting to reach over 1000 customers in the segment nationally this year.
Margins for IT companies could gain from a steep decline in the Indian rupee, which makes exports more competitive.

Source : Economic Times

That's down 33% from the 9% of the U.S. market Windows Mobile/Windows Phone held in the previous quarter.

Breaking down who owns what of the (sliver-esque) Windows Phone 7 market, HTC leads with Samsung, "other", and Motorola trailing.

HTC's WP7/Windows Mobile devices account for 77%--or the vast lion's share--of all U.S. Windows Mobile/Windows Phone devices. Samsung has the next largest share with 9.8% of the Windows Phone devices in the U.S. The "other" category holds 6.6%, and Motorola has 3.3%.

Keep in mind, these figures include Windows Phone 7 plus the legacy Windows Mobile 5.x/6.x devices that are still out there (probably in the form of enterprise handhelds).

You can probably guess what the rest of the U.S. smartphone market looks like.

Android has the largest percentage of U.S. smartphones, growing from 39% to 42.8% from the second quarter to the third quarter. HTC's Android phones alone own 15% of the U.S. smartphone market, Samsung has 10.7%, Motorola owns 10.4%, and "other" (probably including LG, Dell, Huawei, Pantech, Casio, and others) rounds out the Android presence with 7.2% of the U.S. smartphone market.

Apple's share grew a fraction from 28% to 28.3% quarter-over-quarter.

Research In Motion, meanwhile dropped from 20% to 17.8% quarter-over-quarter. Palm and HP's webOS holds a pitiful 2.2% of the U.S. smartphone market, while Nokia's Symbian brings up the rear with 1.7%.

"In the U.S., 71% of those with smartphones own either an Android device or an iPhone," explained Nielsen. "But when it comes to smartphone apps, iPhones and Android smartphones are even more dominant: 83% of app downloaders, that is, those who downloaded an app in the past 30 days, use iPhone or Android smartphones."

The good news for Microsoft and its Windows Phone platform is that the Mango update just began rolling out in late September and early October. In fact, Mango-based phones didn't really hit their stride until mid-October. With HTC's Titan and Nokia's Lumia 800 on the road to being hits, it is possible Microsoft's presence in the U.S. market can reverse itself.

Source : InformationWeek

Deutsche Telekom is best known as the parent company of the global T-Mobile and T-System's brand. This deeper investment in mobile communication technology could create an even greater boost to the T-Mobile brand and its efforts to stay competitive in the rapidly evolving mobile world.

This funding announcement also comes on the heels of the Thanksgiving that AT&T withdrew its application to acquire T-Mobile -- a blow to T-Mobile which could get squeezed out as the fourth major mobile carrier.

The two-year-old company, based in Albuquerque, N Mex., uses its communication technology to optimize transceivers and other elements of communication to deliver even higher speed products.

"We are delighted to welcome Deutsche Telekom to the investment syndicate," Stephen Krasulick, president and CEO of Skorpios Technologies said in a statement. "The support of global carriers, such as Deutsche Telekom, in addition to major equipment companies and systems integrators, validates the market need for Skorpios' differentiating component technology. Our platform is a key enabler to reducing costs and improving performance in next-generation optical communications equipment."

The total $21 million raised in Series B will be used to expand Skorpios Technologies' infrastructure and complete the commercialization of its core technology. This roughly brings the total funding for the tech company to $23 million.

The company is currently in a mode of rapid expansion and is looking to hire innovative scientists and engineers in the coming months.
"The integration of today's separated building blocks into a single chip provides various important effects for our network, such as capex and opex savings at the aggregation layer and core, but also the economic enabling of new technologies that are essential to our strategy," said Bruno Jacobfeuerborn, Director of Technology, Telekom Deutschland GmbH. About T-Venture

T-Venture, founded in 1997 as a total subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom AG that invests in young companies that demonstrate economic and technological complimentary abilities with the business ideas of Deutsche Telekom.

Source : Vator.tv

The new edition has been "dedicated" to the Android application developer community; as such, it has been engineered to help create native software that can run up to four times faster than Java code.

DS-5 CE joins ARM's standard SDK and NDK Android development kits by guiding developers towards the "performance and energy-efficiency advantages" made possible when ARM native code is used in Android applications. The new toolkit permits development of Java and C/C++ code in the same Eclipse integrated development environment (IDE).

ARM says that the DS-5 Community Edition includes limited (but essential) functionality from the premium DS-5 toolkit to help solve common Android application developer pain points. It achieves this by providing an integrated graphical debugger for NDK-generated code and visibility of advanced processor information, including ARM NEON Single Instruction Multiple Data (SIMD) registers.

This new release also features a tailored version of the ARM Streamline Performance Analyzer for use with compatible Android development platforms. Streamline (a branded product name) is designed to capture system-wide performance statistics from a variety of sources, which helps developers to locate hotspots in their code and isolate potential causes. Platform builders can add support for Streamline by integrating an open source driver available from the Linaro website.

"With over half a million apps on the Android market today, developers need to deliver an outstanding user experience to succeed commercially," said John Cornish, executive vice president and general manager, system design division, ARM. "ARM DS-5 Community Edition offers developers an easy to use environment for debugging and optimizing C/C++ code. This allows them to take full advantage of ARM processor technology using native code to deliver the performance and functionality that consumers demand."

Source : drdobbs

Android phones from HTC accounted for 15% of the overall smartphone market, Samsung Android phones had market share of 10.1% and Motorola Android phones had 10.4%. Android phones from other companies accounted for 7.2% of the market.

Apple, with its iOS-based iPhone, was well ahead of any single Android maker, with 28.3% of the market. Research In Motion, with its BlackBerry operating system, had the second largest share, at 17.8%. Microsoft's Windows Mobile and Windows Phone 7 platforms accounted for 6.1% of the market. Neilsen based its findings on surveys of 22,200 U.S. mobile subscribers.

Android and iPhone users combined to make up 71% of the market. Nielsen found that the two groups downloaded 83% of all mobile apps downloaded in the prior 30 days.

Forty-four percent of all U.S. mobile phone users now have smartphones, Nielsen said. For the period of roughly the second quarter, Nielsen said 40% of mobile users owned smartphones and that 40% of those users had Android devices. That figure is about three percentage points below the third-quarter result. In the second-quarter time frame, the iPhone had 28% of the market and BlackBerry devices had 19%.

Source : ComputerWorld

(Credit: Tronton)

Android users looking to replicate the Siri experience have another option now, with the introduction of an app called Cluzee.

Developed by startup Tronton and touted as a "talking intelligent personal digital assistant," Cluzee attempts to step up where other alternatives fall short. The free app is available now for devices running Android 2.1 or higher and has already gotten attention in the tech community.

As you'll see in the video below, Cluzee is designed to answer simple questions with real, helpful responses. Need to find a nearby pizza joint or check the weather forecast for the next few days? Cluzee is the app to handle not only these requests but many other tasks as well. The app also reads e-mails and text messages aloud, converts voice to text, and even searches for deals that fall in line with your buying habits.

I've spent some time with Cluzee and already appreciate the application for what it does and how it handles commands. However, I've also seen some of its limitations and can see plenty of opportunity for future updates.

For example, I told Cluzee, "Remind me to call Mom tomorrow at 1 o'clock." The app recognized my request down to the word, but I still had to pick the time and adjust the date before confirming it on my calendar. In another instance, when I tried booking a hotel in San Francisco for June 25, 2012, the app merely opened a page for me to manually enter data. Commands to "Find hotels" or "Locate hotels" yielded a similar response.

Where I find Cluzee to be a fun and useful application is in its ability to find deals based on location. Powered by Groupon and Yipit, Cluzee found a number of savings on products and services in my area. What's more, I enjoyed being able to log my food eaten and track meals and calories and even set goals.

Also, dictating a Twitter update or Facebook status message is relatively easy and intuitive, though it still feels like there might be a step or two to eliminate along the way.

In terms of Siri counterparts for Android, Cluzee can already be considered one of the best options available. Sure, it has a ways to go before it can really match up against the iPhone 4S' killer feature, but it is a decent version 1.0 offering. The app's colors and layout are nice and the welcome screen recalls Vlingo's early splash screens with a list of commands and options.

If there were one feature I would add to the next release, it would be a simple widget button that I could add to my home screen. It doesn't make much sense to open the app just to push another button. Call me lazy or spoiled, but I expected to be one tap away from adding appointments to my calendar.

For all the things Cluzee is designed to do, it handles some of them very well. It simply takes a bit of experimenting to figure out what you can and cannot ask the app to do for you.

Source : CNET

Its battered shares jumped on the announcement.

"It's not an admission of guilt - it's a necessary evil," Suquehanna analyst Jeff Fidacaro said.

RIM's Mobile Fusion service is designed to give the Canadian company the leading role in managing corporate communications, whether over the BlackBerry or a rival device.

"What our enterprise customers are looking for, and the opportunity for us, is to become the de facto platform," Alan Panezic, RIM's vice-president for enterprise product management, said in an interview ahead of the announcement.

Taking a first, tentative step to offer its network services independently of its own devices, the company could develop a fresh source of revenue to offset a shrinking market share in handsets.

Indeed, success with the strategy could encourage RIM to focus more and more on services rather than devices.

RIM's often-volatile stock closed 5.4 percent higher at $17.37 on Nasdaq and up 5.5 percent at C$17.95 in Toronto. It still down more than 70 percent this year following a string of delayed or botched product launches, and disappointing quarterly results.

RIM's BlackBerry was for years the preferred device for businesses and government agencies, who treasured its encrypted data and distributed the device to millions of workers needing secure, round-the-clock email access.

But many workers now prefer using their own Apple and Android-powered devices to access corporate emails, raising security questions for corporations, which RIM hopes to address with the new software.

"While a positive step, the larger challenges remain RIM's need to narrow competitive gaps in its handsets," RBC Capital Markets analyst Mike Abramsky wrote in a note to clients. He pointed to RIM's software deficiencies and limited content and applications available on its devices.

RIM's slice of the lucrative U.S. smartphone market fell to 9 percent in the third quarter, down from 24 percent a year earlier, according to research firm Canalys. Globally, the report placed RIM in fifth place, with 10 percent market share, compared with 15 percent a year earlier.

DUE BY LATE MARCH

Mobile Fusion, due in late March, will allow corporate information technology staff to set and monitor rules for passwords, apps and software on a range of devices, including Apple's iPad and iPhone, and smartphones using the Android operating system.

A company can remotely lock or wipe a lost or stolen device, a key selling point for security-conscious corporations that may have been wary of shifting away from the BlackBerry.

"We will take full advantage of whatever security capabilities are provided by the core operating system. We're not going to hold that back in any way, shape or form," Panezic said.

Mobile Fusion will include and extend existing BlackBerry Enterprise Servers, or BES, behind corporate firewalls.

Panezic said the software will manage RIM's PlayBook independently from a BlackBerry after the tablet - which has yet to gain traction with either businesses or consumers - receives a long-awaited software upgrade, due in February.

He declined to give any pricing details for the Fusion service, but said it would be competitive with rivals.

"It will help stem the tide of those companies that may have considered eliminating their BES but it won't help sell more phones," said Gartner analyst Phillip Redman. "That's what they really need to do."

"RATTLE SOME CAGES"

RIM has recently launched touchscreen devices using its legacy BlackBerry operating system as it works to put the QNX software powering the PlayBook on to a new generation of phones from early next year.

The new software follows on from the acquisition of device management company Ubitexx, which RIM announced in May.

Smaller companies such as Good Technology, MobileIron and BoxTone already offer device management as companies fret about leakage of sensitive commercial information via their workers' personal, non-BlackBerry devices.

"This will definitely rattle some cages" among firms that filled a niche by securing and managing iPhones and other non-BlackBerry devices for corporations, Forrester analyst Christian Kane said.

Panezic said customers had requested a solution to handle Apple and Android devices, but RIM would consider adding support for other systems, such as Microsoft's Windows Phone, if it saw enough demand.

Source : Reuters

Clearswift’s integrated products manage inbound threats, data loss prevention, web access policies and compliance across both web and email communications. Headquartered in Theale, near Reading, with satellite operations in Germany, Spain, Japan, the US, Australia and Holland, the business employs around 170 people with almost two thirds based in the UK.

The company boasts a diverse and international range of approximately 17,000 customers in around 50 countries and has a strong footprint in the defence, law and order and government sectors. Customers include BAE Systems, Hitachi Solutions, An Post, Warwick District Council, T-Mobile and Australia Post. Sales are predominantly made through Clearswift’s worldwide network of channel partners.

Clearswift operates in the £2.6 billion e-mail and web gateway subsector of the larger security software market, which is expected to achieve a CAGR of 6.8 per cent from 2010 to 2015 according to Ovum, which provides research and support in telecoms, software and IT services.

Led by Clearswift’s Chief Executive Officer, Richard Turner, who has driven the profitable growth of the firm’s range of products over the past two years, the deal will see Lyceum take a significant majority stake, with Lyceum Partners Jeremy Hand and David Harland joining the company’s board. The acquisition from a group of investors including Amadeus Capital Partners, DFJ Esprit and Kennet, takes Lyceum’s total deal value in the IT industry to over £100 million so far this year.

Martin Leuw also joins the board, as Chairman, to guide the business though its next phase of organic and acquisitive growth. Leuw is a highly-experienced software entrepreneur and is the former CEO of IRIS Software, which, under his leadership grew from an enterprise value of £30 million to over £500 million in 10 years, transforming it into one of the UK's largest privately-owned technology companies.

Jeremy Hand, Co-founder of Lyceum Capital, who joins the board of Clearswift, comments: “In Clearswift, we are backing an exciting company which deploys world-class technical expertise and software solutions across an exceptionally impressive and loyal customer base. With an already strong management team bolstered by the arrival of Martin and our strategic, operational and financial input, we’re expecting Clearswift to continue with its strong organic growth supplemented with targeted acquisitions.”

Richard Turner, CEO, Clearswift added: “Threats and risks are increasingly becoming specific to individual customers and need a tailored, more flexible approach. The one size fits all anti-spam and anti-virus technologies many companies rely on is out-dated. With its heritage in both content inspection and flexible compliance policies backed up by excellent service, Clearswift is well positioned to meet customer needs in a world where social media and web technologies are rapidly transforming the way we all do business. We are delighted to have the backing of Lyceum Capital to support the next phase of our ambitious growth plans.”

This latest deal will enable Clearswift to broaden its security software range and acquire further technical capability, increase its presence in key vertical sectors, and build scale and geographical reach. Lyceum and management’s growth strategy will also focus on capitalising on the opportunities arising from recent high profile cyber-security breaches, the increase in regulatory compliance and the recent introduction of significant fines in countries such as the UK for breaches of data protection legislation.

Commenting on the deal, new Chairman Martin Leuw said: “Clearswift is a subscription revenue business, operating in a high-growth global market, delivering mission-critical regulatory and compliance products. Clearswift’s content-aware, policy-based solutions are a key point of differentiation which enables over 17,000 organisations to manage and maintain no-compromise data, e-mail and web security across all gateways and in all directions. This is coupled with specialist IP valued by a number of sectors including government and defence sectors, but becoming increasingly vital to all organisations. With the backing of Lyceum Capital, who have an impressive track record of growing businesses, we will be well equipped to execute an accelerated growth strategy.”

This transaction follows Lyceum's recent investments in the technology sector including its £30 million acquisition of leading managed IT services provider Adapt in September, and £50 million investment in Access, a SaaS (software as a service) based accounting and ERP (enterprise resource planning) software and services business, which completed in March.

Source : BusinessWire

Marlinspike is the author of several well-known cyber security tools, including SSLstrip and wpacracker.

It’s unclear what, exactly, Twitter plans to do with Whisper Systems, but it’s not too far-fetched to imagine Twitter offering a service with an added layer of security to enterprise users.

In any case, having a top-notch security expert such as Marlinspike will surely benefit Twitter, which has had its share of security issues in the past.

Source : Mashable.Com

Other than new LTE phones for the U.S. market, we also have phones for the global market. We will launch some worldwide flagship products. We're confident in them."

On Monday, HTC shares opened down 1.3 percent before rising as much as 1 percent and then falling again as much 5 percent. At 0251 GMT, they were down 2.35 percent at T$478.

That is still way off their high for the year of T$1,238.1 in April, a figure that helped founder Cher Wang top the Forbes rich list for Taiwan this year.

"More foreign investors are still selling HTC as the company doesn't have many bets in hand," said Masterlink Investment Advisory vice president Tom Tang. "And unlike last time (when shares plunged), HTC didn't make a share buyback plan this time," he said.

Aside from stiff competition from Apple Inc's iPhones and Samsung Electronics' Galaxy line-up, HTC also faces legal challenges over patents from Apple and others.

German patent firm IPCom said on Friday it plans to halt as quickly as possible the sale of all HTC smartphones in Germany, after HTC pulled an appeal against the ruling.

HTC withdrew the appeal because the German Federal Patent Court had previously held the relevant claim of the patent in question to be invalid, the Taiwan firm said in a statement.

It added that the technology in question was old and no longer used by HTC, so that any move by IPCom would not affect sales.

Source : Economic Times

Several things, actually. It was (and is) the world’s dominant personal computer operating system–a huge, powerful, feature-rich, messy, often infuriating and largely unavoidable piece of software. Windows’ market share has been so overwhelming for so long that there are adults who don’t know what life was like before it.

And then came last year’s Windows Phone 7.

Nominally the successor to Windows Mobile 6.5, the new version had virtually nothing in common with any previous Microsoft operating system. For one thing, it was the darkest of dark horses in the smartphone race led by Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android. (A recent study puts its market share at an anemic 1.5 percent.) More important, Windows Phone 7 was a spritely, streamlined piece of software with an all-new user interface that was–I’m pretty sure I’ve never applied this word to a Microsoft product before–delightful.

It was also a work in progress. Like Apple, Microsoft followed what I think of as the Benjamin Button school of software design: From the get-go, it gave its new mobile operating system a look and feel that were strikingly mature and thoughtful, knowing it could add more capabilities later. (Google, by contrast, started by packing Android with functions. Only now, with version 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, is it focusing on making the software as personable as it is powerful.)

This year’s edition of Windows Phone is version 7.5, also known by the codename Mango. The first major upgrade, it’s got most of the stuff that was conspicuously absent in version 7, including multitasking, cut-and-paste, unified e-mail that puts all your accounts in one inbox with threaded conversations, multiple-calendar support, custom ringtones and much more. For the first time, Windows Phone feels fully baked.

Microsoft’s operating system isn’t on anywhere near as many phones as Android is, but AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless all offer at least one Windows model apiece. I tried HTC’s snow-white Radar 4G, which is available on T-Mobile for $149.99 with a two-year contract; a $50 mail-in rebate brings the final cost down to $99.99. It’s a nice handset, one that neither mimics the iPhone’s industrial design excessively nor mindlessly follows the fad for massive screens. And like all Windows Phones, it has a dedicated button for the camera, which makes snapping photos a cinch.

I also spent time with Nokia’s Lumia 800, the Finnish phone giant’s first Windows handset. That may seem like a quixotic decision considering that the Lumia isn’t for sale in the United States. But Nokia, alone among the world’s phonemakers, has adopted Windows Phone as its primary smartphone platform, and plans to bring models to the U.S. next year. That could be good news, judging from this curvy, polycarbonate-clad phone–it’s one of the most handsome models I’ve seen in a long time.

So why would anyone bypass the smartphone field’s two obvious choices, iPhone and Android, in favor of a Microsoftian handset? Really, there are two primary reasons why you might–and should–consider a Windows Phone.

Source : Techland.time.com

With the latter two running on the Android 3.1 Honeycomb operating system and IdeaPad A1 running Gingerbread, Lenovo seems quite ambitious to grab more eyeballs. Joining the league of the Android 3.x Honeycomb based tablets, the new Lenovo IdeaPad K1 is one of the premium tablets for the general masses.

Lenovo lent the IdeaPad K1 tablet that features 10.1 inch touchscreen display and runs the Android 3.1 Honeycomb operating system. Packed in a stylish design, the IdeaPad K1 tablet is aimed at smart consumers who wish for a premium multimedia consumption handheld device.

Design and Build

Lenovo IdeaPad K1 looks like any other tablet from the front but unlike others it features a home button with LED displays on each side of it. The rear has a textured material loaded back panel that provides a good grip.

Unlike the other Android tablets, IdeaPad K1 has bit more rounded corners which make it look curvaceous instead of regular corners rounded off like in the Motorola Xoom or Galaxy Tab 750. However, the back panel design is not that premium as it appears from the front.

The IdeaPad K1 has a 10.1 inch capacitive touchscreen LCD display that supports 1280x800 pixel resolution. That means it is capable of running 720p HD video smoothly and it indeed runs it effortlessly. The touchscreen is capable of supporting multi-touch at ten points at the same time.

The display is fingerprint prone and one needs to constantly keep wiping it off the dust particles and fingerprints on it. However, there is some issue with the ambient light sensor when Auto-Brightness mode is activated. The brightness reduction process clearly lags when going from low light to bright light areas.

The dual-core 1 GHz Nvidia Tegra 2 System-on-Chip mobile processor powers the tablet and is capable of even 1080p HD video. Lenovo has added a 1 GB DDR2 600 MHz RAM to support the dual-core processor in promising faster performance of the operating system. The first interaction with Android 3.1 Honeycomb running on the tablet is indeed pleasant. As you try to get used to it, the shortcomings of the operating system start showing up. Read about it in the next section.

Speaker outlets lie at the bottom on the rear side and the 5 megapixel camera with LED Flash lies on the top left side of the tablet. The secondary 2 megapixel camera has been placed oddly in the center of the top bezel which is visible when the tablet is held in the landscape mode. The home button makes sense only in the portrait mode.

The power button, the volume control buttons and the microSD card slot are located on the left side of the bezel. While on the right side of the bezel rests the SIM card slot. When held in the landscape mode with front facing camera on the top, the proprietary connector port at the bottom along with the microHDMI port and the Audio (3.5mm) port.

Overall, the IdeaPad K1 tablet does look hand friendly but misses out a bit to give the premium feeling when it comes to the rear. Besides, the tablet does appear bit heavy with 0.75 kgs weight and whoever picked it up had the same detail to share.

Software Performance

Google did admit that the Android 3.x Honeycomb operating system was sort of an unfinished, rushed up and half-cooked job. Unlike its great looks, the operating doesn't deliver the performance with the dual-core 1 GHz Nvidia Tegra 2 mobile processor and 1 GB RAM. The Android 3.1 Honeycomb on the IdeaPad K1 indeed was customised lightly by Lenovo with its own set of App Store anchor, bunch of widgets and pre-loaded native applications.

Lenovo has added its own layer of customisations which certainly improves the look and feel of the user interface. Like on the main screen, there's a grid widget of four different apps — Email, Videos, Music and Reader with a shortcut to browser in the center. Of course, you can customise this widget the way you like. Indeed it is quite simple and effective users who wish to quickly access the respective app for specific purpose.

A shortcut anchored at the bottom status bar brings up the semi ovular interface on the right of the screen which basically shows a list of applications recently used. Lenovo Shop is shortcut to the company's own store where in number of applications, compatible with the tablet, are listed. The native Menu icons have been redesigned a bit to differentiate from those of the other apps. The UI customisation done by Lenovo is not as heavy and expansive as one could possible see in the HTC Sense user interface or Samsung TouchWiz UI.

The Android 3.1 Honeycomb does perform nicely when it comes to the GPU bench marks but overall it performs much like the Acer Iconia tablet while ASUS Transformer TF101 easily takes the cake.

With the announcement of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, there's a hope that the real potential of the hardware pack can be reaped.

Currently the source code of Android 4.0 ICS has been released but only for the smartphones. So as of now the hardware manufacturers will have to work to bring the Android 4.0 update to their tablets. Meanwhile, Lenovo should certainly has to work on the lag issues and roll out a better firmware update.

Multimedia, Camera and Apps

Despite a 5 megapixel camera coupled with decent hardware, the tablet falls short in impressing with the still photo quality. While using the LED Flash, the camera gives a pink-ish tint at the corners of the actual image. However, the video recording just works smoothly while capturing a 720p HD video without any issues.

The IdeaPad K1 tablet is also looked upon as multimedia device but the tablet falls short in impressing us despite of having a magnificent hardware. Supporting standard audio and video formats have been added. It offers two music players which may baffle certain users to go for perfect one. ArcSoft Media App allowed paying AVI files quite comfortably and also is capable of syncing the photos, music files and videos if one has an ArcSoft account.

The tablet possesses a slightly overclocked graphics chip so we did expect the out of standard definition and 720p HD video files to be smooth. But it failed to play the full HD files smoothly. Even the third party video players did face some issue while playing the full HD files while the 720p HD video files worked just fine. Default video player isn't recommended to be used if optimum video along with audio output is expected.

Music output was bit of a disappointment with this tablet. The speakers were decent but not that loud enough compared to the HTC Flyer. Thankfully the third party player — PowerAMP comes to rescue with great equalizer settings. The tablet also comes loaded with mSpot Music app which allows you to create an account and store your music in the clouds.

Number of default applications and games along with Norton Security Suite will certainly keep you engaged for long.

Battery life

One of the most crucial aspects that everyone looks into the Android-based tablet is the battery life. Lenovo has packed a two-cell 7400 mAh battery to power the tablet but somehow we feel that it has not been utilised optimally. With a very normal usage that involves an hour of browsing, watching 40 minutes TV show, playing a game for half an hour and then reading an ebook, the battery lasted just a bit over 8 hours. Only if the power consumption by the operating system is improved, the same tablet can run for at least an hour more than its current time.

Even in the dormant state with no apps running, the tablet's display continued to consume about 70 percent of the battery which was fairly visible in battery usage statistics. Well, it has been established that Android based devices are big battery hogs but the Honeycomb does more damage than patching it.

Conclusion

Looking for a good Android tablet? Well, then Lenovo IdeaPad K1 is certainly one of the best contenders considering it is priced at the moment at Rs 31,990 approximately. Unfortunately, Lenovo doesn't throw in the keyboard dock with this tablet. Amongst the 3G supporting Android tablets, Lenovo competes with the Galaxy Tab 750 model and Acer Iconia 501. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 does take away the cake with touch-responsiveness and the TouchWiz 4.0 UI panels.

Soon the quad-core tablets will surface in couple of months and consumers will hope for a price drop on the first generation of Android Honeycomb tablets. However, the Rupee to Dollar value fluctuations certainly keeps every tablet prices on the edge.

Lenovo IdeaPad K1 is an ideal choice for the users who wish to enjoy number of pre-loaded apps, or a little modified user interface and a tablet with grip at the back. For those who don't mind getting their hands on an Android tablet till the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich arrives, then Lenovo IdeaPad K1 is a decent and marginally affordable choice.

Test unit sourced from Text100.

Pros

Ergonomically stylish design

MicroHDMI port

Sleek custom UI

Loads of Pre-loaded Apps

Cons

Mediocre Speakers and Audio performance

Camera output

Bit Heavy

Source : TheMobileIndian

But it's trying to expand its cloud offerings

Trying to move beyond its thin client business, Wyse Technology has acquired Montreal’s Trellia Networks Inc., a mobile device management company focused on helping companies deal with the consumerization trend.

Trellia will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of San Jose, Calif.-based Wyse, the companies announced this week. The acquisition has been in the works for about six months.

“We already have a very big management software business at Wyse. The one area that we didn't have was for smartphones and tablets,” said Jeff McNaught, chief marketing and strategy officer with Wyse.

Trellia's cloud-based mobile device management (MDM) solutions help IT departments take inventory of, control and manage mobile devices that run on different operating systems from a single platform.

There are modules for devices that run Google’s Android, Apple Inc.’s iOS and Research in Motion’s BlackBerry operating systems, which put an agent on devices for enforcing corporate policies such as which networks subscribers are authorized to use and data plan management. It also gives IT managers the ability to wiping a device remotely.

“The acquisition of Trellia helps us reach a goal of delivering new solutions that provide management capability across the spectrum of devices that IT is grappling with,” McNaught said.

Through the acquisition, Wyse's 2012 product line for mobile infrastructure management will now include Trellia's technology. The additions go beyond just complementing Wyse's PocketCloud, a mobile cloud application for user and content management, McNaught said.

“They're in the cloud computing space, and there's a huge focus on mobile,” said Rami Karam, vice-president of marketing with Trellia. “They see Trellia as an extension of their mobile story.”

In the short term, branding will remain the same, but Trellia's products will eventually be rolled into Wyse's corporate brand. There are currently no plans for changes in licensing or pricing for Trellia's products. Trellia's enterprise mobility management (EMM) offering will also continue to be hosted in Canada, but Wyse will expand the platform to other regions.

“It almost didn't seem obvious to me at first,” said Laura Hansen-Kohls, a senior research analyst with London, Ont.-based Info-Tech Research Group. “But when you think about the thin client market, it's kind of a dead end.”

The firm's research suggests that for companies not interested in implementing BYOD policies security is the top concern, so integrating management technology from Trellia with Wyse's solutions makes sense.

“Certainly it expands … Wyse's name into organizations that just can't use thin clients,” she said. They will be able to use Trellia to manage various devices in the enterprise.

Trellia will keep its product research and development in Canada. “From a local market standpoint, I think it's a very positive message that we've got really cool technologies coming out of Montreal, succeeding and managing to grow after they get acquired,” Karam said.

Wyse has strategic partnerships with other vendors such as Citrix Systems Inc., Cisco Systems Inc. and VMware Inc. [NYSE:VMW].

“Mobile is so central to the Wyse vision and the enterprise today,” Karam said. “I think this is something that they wanted to own,” rather than partner with.

“This is so core to what we want to do,” McNaught added. “We wanted someone who was absolutely expert to this technology,” which is why the Trellia team has been kept on board. “We're already used to going where the talent is, rather than dragging the talent into California.”

The acquisition is also good news for system integrators, Wyse contends. “They'll be able to sell not only the mobile devices, they'll be able to sell our software that makes the mobile devices work well with virtualization and they'll be able to sell the management and content management technology that makes it all easy to keep track of and working," McNaught said.

Recently, Trellia announced a partnership with Rogers Communications Inc. [TSX: RCI.A] to provide MDM solutions to the carrier's enterprise customers. That deal will remain intact despite. If anything, being acquired by Wyse makes Trellia's offerings more attractive to other carriers worldwide, Karam said. “I think it actually is going to add a lot of momentum.”

Those relationships will actually be beneficial to Wyse, McNaught said. “Wyse has a number of other technologies that Rogers might be interested in, so this is a good conversation that we get to have.”

Source : ITWorldCanada
