According to a statement at the Foreign Office page, many scheduled flights to and from Scotland on May 24, 2011 is canceled. "The passengers are suggested to contact the airline concerned after they announced the cancellation of some routes,"according to advice from the British government.

British Airways said the airline would not serve the London-Scotland route. This policy applies to planes scheduled to land in Scotland before at 14 or who depart from the territory before two o'clock.

Dutch airline, KLM, has canceled services to and from a number of Scotland's main cities, namely Aberdeen, Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Newcastle on Tuesday morning. Loganair also cancel most of today's schedule between the hours of 6 to 13. Airlines that operate the aircraft to the airport in Scotland and England.

A similar policy is also enforced by the airline Eastern Airways for the purposes of Norway and Scotland. Meanwhile, Iceland's Keflavik airport closed Monday.

The cancellation of many scheduled flights today due to the emergence of volcanic ash from Mount Grimsvötn which began erupting on 21 May.

Red Grapes Polyphenols Prevent Repeat Blockage of blood vessels Heart.

Polyphenols, found in red grapes, a day expected to be used as one ingredient for anti-restenosis drug DES (Drug-eluting stents). This conclusion is the result of a pre-clinical research conducted by Jim Kleinedler and colleagues from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, Shreveport, LA, United States and ilmuah session presented at the American Heart Association's Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology 2011.
Studies on polyphenols that have been done previously shown that resveratrol, one of the natural polyphenol found in grapes skins and in high concentrations in red grapes, may reduce restenosis, the re-endotelialisasi spur, and reduces the activation of inflammatory cells in animals. In addition, resveratrol proved to have antioxidant effects and antiapoptosis. Along with his ability as an anti-inflammatory, is estimated to have the effect kardioproteksi resveratrol, inhibits platelet aggregrasi, and has the effect vasorelaksasi. Resveratrol protects vascular endothelial cells from oxidative stress induced by oxLDL inhibited NOX activity (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate oxidase) and inhibits ROS (Reactive Oxygen Species).

Jim Kleinedler said that the results of DES studies ever conducted shows that the anti-proliferative material inserted into the stent is to inhibit proliferation of smooth muscle, but these materials also work in non-selective on the walls of blood vessels and inhibits endothelium reform functional. By inhibition or prolongation endotelisasi can occur increasing the risk of unwanted thrombosis after stenting. Therefore, the diperlukkan in the stent are the ingredients that could prevent restenosis, but yet still trigger a re-endotelisasi, as can be done by a polyphenol found in red grapes. According to Jim Kleinedler DES current medications is still limited in terms of pharmacologic target. Materials polyphenols from red grapes is expected to be about a lot of targets because of the effects of polyphenols is very broad, which in turn can increase endotelisasi.

In cooperation with Nanocopoeia which is a pharmaceutical manufacturing company in Saint Paul, Minnesota, United States, Jim and his colleagues put a stent Kleinedler filled with polyphenol ingredients into carotid arteries in mice. The purpose of the research was to compare the proliferation of endothelial cells between rats treated with a stent with high doses of polyphenols, a low dose, with BES (Bare-Metal Stents) and without a stent (as control). The results showed that after stenting, stent with polyphenols, either high dose or low dose of re-endotelisasi trigger faster than the BES and control. This study also shows that the polyphenols that migrate to the wound site because the stent is faster than DES drugs in previous studies.

The result of pre-clinical research conducted by Jim Kleinedler and colleagues showed that red grapes polyphenols material, which is inserted into the DES reduce neointima hyperplasia and spur the re-endotelialisasi in mice that underwent angioplasty action, and thereby reduce the risk of thrombosis. This research needs to be confirmed further by conducting research involving more subjects, the study period is longer, and involve other experimental animals before doing this research in humans.

The Hasbro My3D turns your iPhone into a View-Master for 3D viewing, but suffers from toy-like build quality and fleeting novelty from only a handful of apps.

The Hasbro My3D is a cute idea – and that’s about as far as it gets. The toy offers the retro appeal of a View-Master by turning your iPhone or iPod into a 3D viewer, and comes with a collection of apps to experiment with. While young users will likely be amazed by it, the wonder is sure to wear off. That said, it’s an inexpensive option for distracting kids no longer placated by two-dimensional entertainment options.

Features and design

Right off the bat, the Hasbro My3D feels like a cheap toy. For good reason: It is, after all, a modern take on the View-Master. The View-Master used to be the cheap toy in a previous life, and kept kids entertained with 3D images of tourist destinations and beloved cartoons. For some reason, we remember this device feeling sturdier and less likely to snap in two – which could very well be due to the fact that we were under the age of 10.

That said, there are a few glaring problems with the My3D. The mechanism for attaching your iPhone to the device was not built with average-sized hands in mind. To hook it up to the base of the My3D is simple enough; simply slide the grip-equipped switch and connect the appropriate side of the included iPhone case. The top hook-up is as easy to finagle. You’ll see two small arrows indicating you should push the two levers in, which will hook into the two slots on the iPhone case once lined up. Problem is, holding those incredibly tiny levers gets in the way of pushing the case into the appropriate space. The only way to do it is to the press the levers in with one hand and with the other attach the case from the top. Once you get it in place, you release the levers, hooking the iPhone and case into place. It’s a small hardware oversight, but in generally the attachment feels flimsy, not something we’re thrilled about when it comes to securing such expensive equipment.
The case itself is easy enough to maneuver. We wish it would hold the iPhone when not attached to the other half of the My3D, but that’s a minor issue, seeing as there are mere seconds between sliding your iPhone in the case and hooking said case to the rest of the My3D. It leaves all ports open so you can attach ear buds and a charger if desired.
One feature we do appreciate about the My3D is the variety of iOS devices it’s compatible with. It’s unfortunate but true that the iPod touch has become something of a cast off in the wake of iPhone saturation, but My3D extends is usefulness and works the second-, third-, and fourth-generation models of the PMP. It’s also compatible with the iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and iPhone 4. The device is available in white and black.

There are currently a handful of apps available (Hasbro’s site lists seven). Most are games, but there is also a “My3D Presents…” app that takes you through the initial setup and use process, as well as “My3D Teleport L.A.” app that offers a 360 degree, 3D tour of the cities’ various hubs. Most apps are free, but some cost as much as $4.99.

Use and presentation

Right away, you should know that the majority of the content available for the My3D will appeal to kids under 10. The games are mind-numbingly simple (although sure to entertain youngsters) and the available trailers to watch in 3D include Kung Fu Panda, Smurfs, and Rio. So as long as you’re purchasing the My3D with the intention of handing it (and your iOS device) off to keep kids quiet during a road trip or similar situation, you’re fine. The Teleport L.A. app offered some mildly impressive 3D visuals and kept our interest longer than the others. We could see a line of location-exploration based apps like this finding a niche audience. A 360 degree, 3D way to check out vacation destinations or future apartments also seem like popular uses – but probably aren’t enough to tempt many adults into purchasing a My3D.

It may not need to be said, but the My3D is not a hands-free toy. Younger, disaster-prone children will probably want to use two.
Slots in the My3D let you insert your thumbs to control the games and other apps, although hitting the touchscreen at just the right angle can be challenging.

Conclusion

Hasbro deserves credit for being the first to turn the iPhone and iPod touch into a 3D device. Not only that, but it does so relatively inexpensively and simply. But there are plenty of problems, the most glaring one being that this device is clearly being geared toward kids. We don’t know about you, but allowing children extended use of an iPhone makes us nervous. It seems like the benefit of the toy is to keep children distracted or entertained, but provided it’s housing an iOS device you actually care about, you’re going to want to employ some supervision.
At $35, it’s a cheap thrill for kids or 3D enthusiasts – but don’t expect to be blown away by the My3D’s build quality or app selection. If you’re really interested in handheld 3D experiences, you should go big or go home and hold out for the likes of the Nintendo 3DS. Honestly, your kids would probably be amused by an iOS device on its own.

Review, Samsung Infuse 4G

The Samsung Infuse 4G sets records for screen size and thinness, but some other specs fall short of its supersized reputation.

You can accuse Samsung of a lot of things, but it knows how to keep up with trends. The electronics maker just took the wraps off the Infuse 4G on May 5, and as of May 15, it’s officially available on AT&T. This isn’t just another Android phone, though. At 4.5 inches diagonally, the Infuse has a larger screen than almost any phone on the market and Samsung also claims it is thinner than the iPhone 4, making it the leanest phone in the United States. Couple that with 1080p video recording and the ability to install apps outside of the Android Market and we’ve got ourselves a hot ticket. But do the details match the headlines?

Features and design

Samsung’s Infuse is big. It’s 4.5-inch screen is noticeably larger than all of the 4.0 and 4.3-inch smartphones hitting the market and at 5.2 inches tall by 2.8 inches wide, it will be positively too large for some users. This is a phone for people with big hands and ambitious plans. Perhaps more ambitious than some of us. Though we enjoy the extra screen space, once in a while the extra real estate was a tad burdensome.

Luckily, as Samsung boasts, the Infuse is extremely thin. Other than a slight protrusion at the bottom for the speaker and antenna (we presume), the back of the unit is pretty flat. Even the camera sits flush with the back panel. We can’t help but admire the durable Gorilla Glass screen as well.
After admiring (or despising) its size and thinness, the next thing you’ll notice about the Infuse 4G is how light it is. Samsung has stuck with an all-plastic shell for the Infuse. The metallic slate finish is overly shiny and attracts fingerprints, making the Infuse feel a bit too light and too cheap, but the textured grip on the back helps class the phone up a little.
Here’s a rundown of all the ports and doo-dads adorning the phone. It has a power button on the right that’s very easy to push, a stereo audio jack up top, a volume rocker on the left side, a micro USB port on the bottom center, and a micro SD card slot under the SIM card, nestled right up to the battery, both of which are under the back panel. The front and rear cameras are nicely placed. Our only complaint is that the Infuse has but one anemic little speaker on the back, right on the bulge. While we don’t expect much out of smartphone speakers, this one is especially weak because of its placement. It sits atop the bulge on the bottom back of the unit, in a place easily blocked by hands or anything the phone happens to be lying on. The speaker tends to go completely quiet if you block it with a finger as well.

Specs

Where would all us geeks be without the specifications? On the specs front, Samsung generally disappoints, but only when compared to the flagship dual-core phones hitting shelves. The phone runs on a 1.2GHz ARM Cortex A8 Hummingbird processor, has an 8-megapixel rear camera that can take 1080p video (most competitors are stuck at 720p) with an LED flash, has a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera, and is the first AT&T phone that can reach theoretical download speeds of 21Mbps (more on that below). It runs on Android 2.2 with Samsung’s TouchWiz 3.0 UX built onto it.
The storage situation on the Infuse is a bit odd. The device has 2GB of internal phone storage, but also has a 16GB SD card built into it. On top of that, it also has a 2GB removable micro SD card. Getting our computers to recognize the device and its 3 drives properly took some time. Samsung does let you choose which drive you’d like to mount, but the process is a bit confusing the first time you run through it. In any case, the Infuse has a lot of storage by today’s standards.

Screen

The size of the Infuse 4G screen is going to turn some off, but may be the main reason why some people buy the phone. Since it is a focus, we feel the need to point out that while the Super AMOLED Plus screen is incredibly bright, the low resolution of the phone does not scale well to 4.5 inches. Those who have used high-res displays will notice pixelation on the 480 x 800 display. The bold, saturated colors tend to give menus less depth than on competing devices, even the Samsung Droid Charge, which technically has the same screen, just .2 inches smaller. We’re not precisely sure why this is, and can only trace it to the increased size of the screen. Still, movies and pictures look gorgeous on the screen. Samsung packs the Infuse with some movie trailers that will be the highlight reel for showing off to friends.

Samsung TouchWiz interface

We’re a bit sad that Samsung is still shipping devices with Android 2.2 (Froyo) since Google released 2.3 (Gingerbread) in December, but it isn’t the only company doing this. An upgrade to 2.3 has been promised sometime in the coming months.
Samsung’s TouchWiz 3.0 overlay is not as all-encompassing as HTC Sense, but it has some good features. In particular, we like the way it has built-in toggles for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, mute, and screen rotation, all on the pull-down notifications bar. Another new feature lets you pinch to see all seven homescreens at once (a nod to Sense).
On the widget front, the schedule and memo widget is nice, as is Samsung’s built-in app management software, but the social and friend widgets just aren’t there yet. We’re also puzzled why Samsung removed the standard Android clock and put a “double clock” in its place. There is literally no way to have a clock widget unless you want two clock widgets, stacked on top of one another. Did we miss a broad trend here? Either way, we now know the weather in New York City and Detroit, MI. Delightful.
Design-wise, we have mixed feelings about TouchWiz. We don’t mind the iPhone-like square icons and bottom tray, but some of the color choices for menus (brown, gray) look kind of ugly or bland. We can see why Apple is suing Samsung, but we don’t think Steve Jobs has much to worry about. TouchWiz 3.0 still can’t hold a candle to iOS.

Apps and web

Like most Android phones these days, the Infuse comes preloaded with a number of apps that cannot be removed, whether you like them or not. We don’t mind companies loading apps in the phone, but why lock them in there? The Infuse comes with some great games like Angry Birds, but what if we feel like moving on to Angry Birds Rio?
AT&T Navigator, AT&T Code Scanner, AT&T FamilyMap, AllShare, Facebook, Live TV, Media Hub, myAT&T, Quickoffice, My Files, Mini Diary, Memo, Task Manager, Ypmobile, and Write & Go all come preloaded. Some of these, like Memo and Task Manager, are fairly helpful. Others are less exciting. All of the basic Google apps like Gmail, YouTube, Talk, Places, Navigation, and Latitude are included as well. As always, you can find anything you’re missing on the Android Market. However, the Infuse is also capable of downloading off-market apps, after turning it on in application settings. In other words, those who would like to get the Amazon Appstore can now freely do so.
Web speeds are faster than 3G, but still disappointing when compared to actual 4G services like Verizon. We got 2.5Mbps to 3.0Mbps on the download and about 1.5Mbps on the up in New York City. On the Samsung Droid Charge, Verizon’s LTE network is clocking about 10Mbps down and 3Mbps up in New York. Also, we would be remiss if we didn’t point out that a larger screen is always a good thing for Web browsing.

Camera

The Infuse is packed with an 8-megapixel rear camera and 1.3-megapixel front camera. Both compare well to what’s out there. We like Samsung’s camera software, which lets you tap on the screen to choose an item to focus on. It also has a few fun modes for action shots, panoramas, smile shots, or pictures where you’d like to insert your friend later. The still camera also did fairly well in low-light conditions thanks to the bright LED flash. We also got decent audio and motion from the video camera, which can record at up to 1080p (full HD).

Phone

You know, it’s strange. These devices are phones, but we sometimes forget how important calls quality is in the grand scheme of things. We haven’t made a large number of calls on the Infuse, but reception in New York is pretty good and calls sound as good as they ever do.

Battery life

While you shouldn’t expect stellar battery life out of the Infuse, it seems to compare well to most Android devices. Unless you’re playing games or watching movies constantly, you should be able to get through a day without a charge. This is one benefit the device has over the 4G Samsung Droid Charge. Without a battery-sucking LTE network to report to, the Infuse manages its juice reasonably well, especially considering its bright Super AMOLED Plus screen.

Conclusion

At $199.99 the Samsung Infuse 4G is a great phone at a reasonable price. While its large size will turn some off, we generally enjoy having a bit more screen space to type and browse on. The hardware isn’t up to the dual-core standards of some flagship phones, nor does AT&T’s network support 4G speeds that are anywhere near as fast as Verizon, but the Infuse is pretty snappy, and didn’t hiccup on us too often. We’re not huge fans of the completely plastic shell of most Samsung phones, but the light weight and extremely thin profile help justify the lack of metal, to a degree. Overall, if you’re looking for a good Android phone with a big screen, this may be your guy.

Review, iBuyPower Erebus

iBuyPower’s flagship Erebus Gaming PC delivers the bang if you’ve got the bucks. Ridiculous gaming performance outshines some minor design oddities.

iBuypower’s brand new flagship Erebus system tips the scales at over 80 pounds (our review system arrived on a palette via a forklift) and contains a sampling of some of the best computer hardware available in today’s market. Expertly assembled, the Erebus rightly includes a window on the left side of the chassis to show off the system’s impressive guts, including an elaborate liquid cooling solution.
Note: Our review system is a pre-release review sample and some specs are subject to change. We tested the system as-is, except where as noted.

Specs

Details on the full range of options for the Erebus line weren’t available at press time, but our review model rocked an Intel i7-990X overclocked to a whopping 4.6GHz (up from a stock value of 3.46GHz). The processor sits on an Asus Rampage III Extreme motherboard, a mobo long popular with enthusiasts and DIY overclockers. A trio of “superclocked” NVIDIA GTX 580s push the polygons, and 12GB of DDR3-1600 Kingston HyperX RAM handle the random accessing of memory. The OS hard drive array consists of a pair of 90GB Kingston SSDNow solid-state drives in RAID0 (more on that later) for approximately 178GB of usable space. A conventional 3GB Hitachi Deskstar 7200RPM drive accompanies the SSD array to provide large, inexpensive storage.
The system gets its juice from a 1200-watt Corsair power supply attached to the custom iBuyPower Erebus chassis. Cooling happens via a custom iBuyPower/Koolance liquid-cooling solution that snakes through the chassis interior. We also get a Sony 12x Bluray reader and Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium.
The system came with a Thermaltake eSports Challenger gaming keyboard and matching mouse.
A small control module occupying one of the expansion card slots adjusts the brightness of the (tasteful) case lighting.
The Erebus comes with a 3-year limited warranty plus lifetime phone support and lists for $7,650.

Connectivity

The Erebus offers an array of connectivity options that should satisfy even the most accessory-happy among us.
The rear panel sports seven USB2.0 ports, two USB3.0 ports, powered eSATA, 1394, ROG Connect, optical S/PDIF out, and a mini-Bluetooth adapter. Connections on the front consist of two USB2.0 ports, an SD card reader, and two USB3.0 ports.
A note about the USB3.0 ports: the pair on the front of the chassis are connected to the system by a pair of USB cables that run along the top of the chassis, out one of the unoccupied grommet holes for liquid cooling conduit, and into the pair of USB3.0 ports on the rear of the chassis. As configured, you can only use one pair of USB3.0 ports at a time on the Erebus. While it’s nice to have USB3.0 ports on the front — and the cable run does get the job done — the solution looks a little bit not-ready-for-primetime.

An NZXT Sentry-LX fan control panel occupies two of the drive bays on the front of the chassis, displaying the time, radiator fan speed, and component temperatures.

Performance

As we saw with the Maingear Shift (which only had a pair of GTX 580s, compared with the Erebus’ trio), the Erebus utterly destroyed anything we threw at it game-wise. Batman: Arkham Asylum, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Crysis 2… nothing dropped below 50 FPS, even during the most intense combat and action sequences with every conceivable setting pinned to maximum.
Running most currently popular gaming titles on the Erebus is a bit like shooting tin cans with a Browning M2 — complete overkill.

Running 3DMark Vantage in “performance” mode, the Erebus scored P55491: 49850 for the GPU, and a whopping 84009 for the CPU.
The dual SSD drives in RAID0 make general computing a very pleasant experience. Windows open almost instantaneously, and there’s almost zero lag from when you click on the Windows Start button and when the menu appears. The OS feels light and responsive, an experience confirmed by a PCMark7 score of 5552.
Boot time took a scant 41 seconds, thanks no doubt to the super-speedy HDD array.

Usability

The first thing you’ll notice upon powering on the Erebus is that it’s loud. Really loud. Especially for a liquid-cooled system. Granted, iBuyPower really pushes the overclocking with the Erebus, so perhaps some fan noise is inevitable. It’s just a little surprising that the computer would be almost as loud as the fan on the Viewsonic projector we used in conjunction with the Erebus during testing. That said, the system was completely stable throughout testing—no crashes, hangs or other anomalies.
Our review system also arrived minus any Blu-ray playback software for the Blu-ray drive. A representative from iBuyPower stated that production models will ship with such software already installed, but ours didn’t, which basically left us with an overpriced DVD burner for an optical drive.

Conclusion

No doubt the sticker-shock inducing pricetag will give many gamers pause, but when you get towards the top of the hardware performance curve, the law of diminishing returns takes over, and you start paying more money for only marginally better performance. But if you’ve got the scratch and need the speed, the Erebus certainly delivers. Though we dinged the system for some oversights and minor design quibbles, none of them were deal-breakers, and nothing caused us to have concerns about the long-term viability of the Erebus.
Currently the king of the mountain in terms of performance among the systems we’ve had on the test bench so far, the Erebus delivers an ultra high-end gaming experience at a price to match.

Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-TX100V Review

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX100V comes packed with features including a slick touch interface, 3D still capability, and 1080p video recording at 60 FPS, but the sun is quick to wipe out the delicate OLED screen.

The latest 2011 digicams continue to ramp up still and video quality. Have we finally topped out? Sony tries to break through the glass pixel ceiling with the Cyber-shot TX100V, the latest spin on its stylish TX series.

Features and design

The Sony T and TX series have been around so long they’re iconic. With a thin body, sliding front cover, non-protruding 4x zoom lens and minimal controls, we’ve always liked the industrial design. Not much has changed in overall styling with the new TX100V, but there have been some huge changes in screen and capture technology.

Available in red, silver and black, the camera measures 3.9 x 2.4 x 0.72 (W x H x D in inches), tipping the scales at 5.2 ounces with battery and card. Needless to say for a camera smaller than a Droid smartphone, you can carry it anywhere. Our ruby red review sample looked very chic. Looking head on there are just two tasteful logos on view in the off position. Slide the front panel down to power it up and there’s additional text, but it’s so subtle as to be barely noticeable. Other manufacturers please take notice. You’ll also see the flash, AF Assist/self-timer lamp and non-protruding Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar 4x lens with a range of 25-100mm. Clearly it’s not the most powerful telephoto out there, but it does have a nice opening wide angle, which we prefer compared to 30mm or even 28mm.

On the top are the four-pinhole stereo mics, a tiny power button, shutter and small zoom toggle. Do your own hands-on with camera, as you may find the controls to be too small. We didn’t have a problem, but that’s just us. The speaker is a small slit at the beveled back edge, and there’s a playback button nearby. That’s it folks. Since this is a touchscreen, there’s a minimal amount of buttons, dials and controls — everything is handled by the touch interface. This can be annoying, as we found with the Panasonic FH27, but it can be a good experience as we had with the new Canon ELPH 500 HS. Stay tuned for our verdict in the performance section.

The 3.5-inch touch screen takes up the entire back of the camera. As part of a slightly growing trend — at least in cameras — the display uses Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) technology and it’s rated 1,229K dots, about as good as it gets. OLED displays are known for their outstanding black levels, contrast and accurate color reproduction. But like the little girl with the curl in the Longfellow poem, when they’re good, they’re very, very good but when bad, they’re horrid — as you’ll discover.

On the right side is the eyelet for the wrist strap and compartment for the mini HDMI out. The left just has a GPS logo while the bottom of the made-in-Japan camera has Sony’s proprietary USB-A/V connector, a metal tripod mount and compartment for the battery and memory card. The TX100V not only accepts all Memory Stick Pro Duo media types but SD (including SDXC) as well.

What’s in the box

The package for the TX100V camera, battery, USB charger, USB cable, strap, paint pen (stylus), a 28-page quick guide and CD-ROM. Thanks to the lower power requirements of the OLED screen, the battery is rated 220 shots, a good figure for a 3.5-inch display; our results were better than that. As part of a trend we’re not fond of, the camera does not come with a plug-in charger. You have to juice it up by connecting it to the USB-to-AC adaptor or via USB to your computer. It’s not the end of the world, but just get into the habit of charging your camera at night, like your cell. The CD-ROM has Picture Motion Browser ver. 5.5 for handling files, plus it also has the full manual as an HTML file.

Performance and use

We had the TX100V with us over the course of several weeks, using it in the New York metro area as well as in Florida where we tested the camera along with several others including the 12MP Nikon Coolpix S9100. The ability to slip this tiny digicam in your back pocket and carry it everywhere is one its real pluses. It powers up quickly and you’re good to go it what seems like an instant (actually it’s about 3 seconds).
The camera features a new 16.2-megapixel Exmor R CMOS sensor, capturing 4608 x 3456 pixel files. This spec is the absolute peak for 2011 digicams (not DSLRs) jumping over the 14.1-megapixel level that reigned supreme for a number of years. As Digital Trends readers well know, having a huge number of pixels doesn’t guarantee superior-quality photographs. How this one shakes out, you’ll know shortly. Another mind-boggling spec for the TX100V is its video capability. Last year it was fairly common for point-and-shoots to grab 720p HD movies (1280 x 720 at 30 FPS). This new Sony takes 1920 x 1080/60p movies in the AVCHD format at a 28 Mbps compression rate. Few fully-featured camcorders have this capability. These 60p clips are amazing, but we’re getting a bit ahead of ourselves. Let’s see if the pictures are any good, as after all, this is a digital camera!

The Cyber-shot TX100V is distinctly a point-and-shoot with no options for adjusting aperture, shutter speed or focus other than changing scene modes. Since there’s no mode dial, you adjust the camera using the touchscreen. The screen itself is very responsive, reacting quickly to taps of your fingertips. The icons are large and attractive. Your recording mode choices include Intelligent Auto, Superior Auto, iSweep Panorama, Movie, Program Auto, Background Defocus, Scene and 3D Shooting (still and Sweep Panorama). Intelligent Auto is like Smart Auto found on so many better aim-and-forget cameras. It “guesses” what’s in front of it, adjusting accordingly. Superior Auto takes advantage of the high-speed CMOS sensor, combining multiple frames for best quality. This slows the camera down a bit, but the results are worth it. iSweep Panorama is a great way to take horizontal or vertical panoramas; the TX100V stitches frames together in-camera. Movie lets you shoot anything from MPEG4 web clips to four grades of AVCHD, ranging from 9 to 28 Mbps. In program you have some image control, but it’s only exposure compensation, white balance and ISO (125 to 3200) which is typical for a point-and-shoot. What’s not typical is the burst mode, which hits 10 frames per second for a maximum of 10 shots. Scene has 15 options, and among our favorites are Backlight Correction HDR and Handheld Twilight. Again the speedy sensor combines multiple frames for higher-quality shots. And 3D lets you take stills and panoramas. Since the stills are MPO files, they can be viewed on any 3D HDTV, but the panoramas can only been seen on Sony 3D televisions.
We left Background Defocus for last, as this the one is an homage to advanced photography. Since you cannot change the aperture of the TX100V, the sensor combines two frames—one with the main subject and the background blurred. Voila! You’ve changed the depth-of-field without adjusting the lens. And did we mention this digicam has a built-in GPS that captures your longitude and latitude, plus a small icon that acts like a compass? Combine all of these features and you have one packed camera for under $400. Granted it’s not as photographically blessed as a Canon PowerShot S95 or G12, but those cameras are really targeted to very different shutterbugs.
Once we took all of our stills and videos, they were downloaded to a PC, 8.5 x 11 prints made, files examined closely on the monitor, and everything reviewed on a 55-inch Bravia 3D HDTV.

And the envelope, please

Before getting into details, we’ll say the Cyber-shot TX100V is a fun camera to shoot and — for the most part — we’ll be sad sending it back to the company (you don’t think we get to keep all these toys, do you?). The camera is responsive, focuses quickly and the touchscreen interface is well implemented.

Our photo results were somewhat mixed. Colors were accurate and had pop, but they weren’t as good as a 12-megapixel CMOS Canon PowerShot 500 HS. Overall, shots taken in Florida and NYC were quite good, and you’ll be happy with them, although were occasional hot spots on a blooming bush with white flowers. Backlight HDR and 10 FPS bursts are two of our favorite features of this digicam. HDR handles difficult exposures well and the continuous shooting really nabs fast action. Background Defocus, on the other hand, was just a mere shadow of what real camera can do, and the effects were minimal. We had a great time blowing up the files on our monitor, closely examining the minute details the TX100V captures. Just realize there are some tradeoffs cramming 16-megapixels onto a tiny chip, as it’s not a recipe for beautiful, noise-free prints. Sony seems to employ excess noise reduction, and this was noticeable with blow-ups past 100 percent, but our 8.5 x 11 prints were just fine. Are we being picky? Yes, but that’s the nature of the beast. As far as ISO is concerned, with our usual test subject, noise was well under control until around the 800 setting, with 1600 and 3200 degrading pretty rapidly. Stick to Handheld Twilight for best results in low light. It slows the camera down but it’s definitely worth it.
The TX100V takes 3D stills and Sweep Panoramas. To be honest, we’re still experimenting as to what makes a good 3D image, so our results were decidedly hit and miss. Palm trees with an ocean background worked well as stills, yet relative close-ups of flowering bushes did not. Some Sweeps were spectacular, others just flat. We’re still climbing the learning curve, but these are nice features with which to experiment. It also gives you another use for your 3D television other than sitting through Avatar again.
Along with 16-megapixel stills, the TX100V shoots 1080/60p video. The quality of these clips is top notch, with very accurate colors and no motion artifacts. The 28 Mbps compression rate is something you’ll find in full-featured camcorders such as Panasonic’s TM900 and SDT750, which cost over $1,000. It’s pretty amazing to find it in a sub-$400 camera. For the record, other Sony Cyber-shots offer this as well, and it’s a real standout. However, realize you can only watch the videos on TV at this quality level; there’s no way to record it. You have to step down to 60i to archive on Blu-ray disks. The clips look great. As usual, the stereo mics are bad at handling breezes, no matter if they’re slight or stiff. This is just a fact of life for camera microphones.

Conclusion

Solid-quality stills for the most part, superior videos (beyond the wind-tunnel noise from the stereo mics), a nice touch interface, 3D capability, built-in GPS and a big, beautiful screen—the TX100V seems like a winner. And it is — except for that 3.5-inch OLED display. We’d easily give this camera an Editor’s Choice award other than the fact the screen was almost unusable in the bright Florida sunshine. Granted, this is a tough test, but it didn’t hold up as we were walking on a pier around noon, and this was the case even with panel brightness cranked all the way to maximum. In other less severe instances, the screen still wiped out, and we had to bring it in close, using our body as a shade. This was a real disappointment for what could have been an outstanding digicam. Right now, it’s just very good but be prepared for those screen issues.

Planet which is about 20 light-years from Earth is one of our closest neighboring planet. He estimated temperature is warm enough and wet enough to cultivate a similar life-owned planet Earth.

Orbiting Gliese 581d in the Goldilocks zone (the area where possible life forms) belonging to the star Gliese 581. As is known, in the Goldilocks zone, the temperature not too hot, causing the water to boil or not too cold to make it freeze but it was in the right temperature so that water remains in liquid form.

"With a dense atmosphere of carbon dioxide will, which is the most probable scenario for giant planet, Gliese 581d stable climate and warm enough to have oceans, clouds, and rainfall," researchers said the National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS).

Penentuan Bobot Molekul Polimer Metode Gugus Ujung

Analisis gugus ujung merupakan teknik analisis polimer untuk mengetahui massa molekul satu sampel atau sistem dengan menghitung jumlah rantainya. Dalam proses polarisasi pada suatu monomer awal dan akhir rantai, akan terdapat gugus fungsi yang tidak berkaitan dengan satuan monomer lain. Jika suatu polimer diketahui mengandung jumlah tertentu gugus ujung per molekulnya, maka jumlah gugus itu dapat ditentukan dalam jumlah massa polimer dengan metode analisis gugus ujung. Dengan demikian jika massa 1 mol polimer dapat ditentukan,maka molekul atau bobot molekul polimer juga dapat ditentukan.

Hal – hal yang harus diperhatikan dalam penerapan analisis gugus ujung:

• Gugus ujung harus dapat dianalisis secara kuantitatif.

• Jumlah gugus ujung yang dapat dianalisis harus diketahui dengan pasti.

• Gugus fungsi lain yang mengganggu analisis harus ditiadakan.

• Konsentrasi gugus ujung harus cukup besar.

• Metode ini tidak dapat diterapkan pada polimer bercabang.

• Dalam 1 polimer linier terdapat gugus ujung sebanyak dua kali molekul linier.

Metode analisis gugus ujung dapat dilakukan melalui beberapa cara yakni titrasi, penerapan spektroskopi UV, IR dan NMR, pengukuran aktivitas gugus ujung yang radioaktif serta analisis gugus ujung yang mengandung unsur tertentu.

Contoh analisis gugus ujung, dengan cara titrasi.

Prosedur kerjanya adalah sebagai berikut:

• Sampel Poliester (gugus karboksil dan hidroksil), masing – masing ditimbang dan dilarutkan dalam pelarut yang cocok (aseton untuk karboksil dan dititrasi dengan basa NaOH dengan indikator

penolftalein (titik akhir titrasi).

• Untuk hidroksil sampel diasetilasi dengan anhidrat asetat berlebih untuk membebaskan asam asetat, bersama dengan gugus ujung distribusi dengan cara yang sama.

• Dari kedua titrasi tersebut diperoleh milligram ekivalen karboksil dan hidroksil dalam sampel tersebut.

• Jumlah mol polimer per gram dapat dihitung dengan persamaan dibawah:

C2, dinyatakan bahwa 2 gugus ujung dihitung per molekul.

Gugus ujung lain yang dapat dititrasi adalah gugus amino dalam polisakarida, gugus asetil dalam poliamida bergugus asetil, isosianat dalam polistirena dan epoksida dalam polimer epoksi.

Contoh soal:

Andaikan 1 gram poliester yang diambil mengandung 1 gugus –COOH per molekul polimer. Jika CM2 larutan baku natrium hidroksida 0,01 mol dm3 diperlukan untuk menetralkan sampel tersebut. Berapa massa molekul relatif poliester tersebut?

Jawab: Mol NaOH yang dugunakan:

Maka jumlah mol gugus –COOH = 10-4, karena tiap molekul polimer mengandung 1 gugus –COOH, jumlah mol polimer yang ada = 10-4 mol. Berat 10-4 mol polimer tersebut adalah 1 gram. Maka 1 mol polimer beratnya 1/10-4 gram = 104 gram. Dengan demikian massa molekul polimer = 10.000.

Kelemahan dari metode ini adalah sebagai berikut:

• Harus mengandaikan struktur molekul.

• Tidak dapat dipakai untuk polimer bercabang.

• Hanya dapat dipakai untuk polimer dengan daerah berat molekul > 10.000.

Keunggulan dari metode ini adalah:

• Bisa dipakai untuk polimer kondensasi. Dipakai untuk menentukan bobot molekul yang mempunyai gugus fungsi.

• Bisa dipakai untuk menentukan polimer poliamida, insiator, poliester dan radikal bebas.

While not as visible as the ubiquitous MacBook Pro or as prestigious as the ThinkPad, the sturdy business notebooks have soldiered on in relative obscurity, relied upon by businesses but unseen but the public at large.
With a redesign this spring, that may change. A complete refresh brings the design of HP’s workhorse into the 21st century, while additional rugged features and practical updates like a supersized glass trackpad make it more practical than ever, too.

Design

The HP EliteBook 8560p looks like a notebook Jason Bourne would carry. A rather flattering analogy, perhaps, but an apt one that seemed to be the consensus around Digital Trends’ offices thanks to an angular profile, muted brushed-metal finish, and a downright industrial-quality hinge and screen lock that wouldn’t seem out of place on the briefcase for a collapsible sniper rifle.
HP has kept the austere, down-to-business look of previous EliteBooks with its latest industrial design, but dressed it up a bead-blasted platinum finish, chemically strengthened glass trackpad, brushed-aluminum keyboard deck, and aluminum alloy hinges. Even the little details received attention. The janky capacitive touch buttons above the keyboard that were in vogue a few years back have reverted to hard buttons you can actually click. The bottom – normally a No Man’s Land of vents, labels, logos doors and slots, has been stripped, sculpted and styled into a relatively smooth plane of black plastic with a single access door. In a nod to the MacBook’s microscopic LEDs, the front has laser-cut indicators for Wi-Fi, power, charging and disk drive activity. This is a clean-looking notebook.
At 6.01 pounds, the EliteBook falls at the heavier end of the spectrum for 15-inch notebooks. A budget box like Gateway’s EV Series can easily hit 5.3 pounds, and even the comparably tough MacBook Pro 15 weighs 5.6 pounds. The extra weight makes the EliteBook a bit of a bear to handle with one hand, but it doesn’t quite reach the oppressive weight of a true desktop replacement. Depth of 1.34 inches is also nothing to brag about, but it comes with the territory in the “business rugged” class. A fully rugged notebook like Panasonic’s ToughBook 52, for by comparison, spans a porky two inches.

Features

Not all of the HP’s upgrades have been aesthetic. Like most full-size notebooks launching these days, the EliteBook 8560p rides on Intel’s second-generation Core platform, also known as Sandy Bridge. You can pick an i5 clocked as slow as 2.3GHz or a an i7 clocked as high as 2.7GHz, with both dual- and quad-core variants, with available vPro for security. Our review unit came equipped with the aforementioned Core i7 at 2.7GHz.
Though HP markets the EliteBook 8560p to businesses, gamers will be happy to know it draws its graphics firepower from the consumer side of the market in the form of an AMD Radeon HD 6470M, a high-end card with 1GB of dedicated GDDR3 graphics memory. As we’ll see in the performance section, that gives business users some considerable leeway with gaming when they’re not jockeying spreadsheets and PowerPoints.
The 8560p offers a 15.6-inch LED-backlit screen, which comes in both 1366 x 768 and 1600 x 900 resolutions. For an extra $75 at the order screen, we highly recommend going with the latter, which ours came with.

Ports and connectivity

Like its predecessors in the EliteBook line, the 8560p has no lack of ports for connecting up to everything from projectors to portable hard drives. The right side of the notebook houses headphone and microphone jacks, two USB ports, a slim tray-loading DVD drive, and an Ethernet port towards the very rear. On the left, you’ll find an ExpressCard/54 slot, VGA connector, eSATA connector, FireWire (1394a) connector, and two more USB ports above an almost-too-hard-to-find SD card reader. Though the most recent crop of notebooks consumer notebooks typically eschew rear ports, HP has relocated some of its quirkier interfaces there, including the modem, DisplayPort, and oddly enough, a serial port. Unfortunately, the AC power connector has been banished to the rear as well, making it less convenient to connect and more prone to levering into tables when you lift the EliteBook from the front while it’s still plugged in. On the bottom, the EliteBook has a docking connector, and smartly enough, an entire panel that lifts away to give major easy access to the RAM and hard drive for upgrades.

Software

HP’s business notebooks bear little likeness to its junk-filled consumer notebooks out of the box, but that doesn’t mean they’re entirely clean slates. The EliteBook has shortcuts for a trial of Microsoft Office 2010, Norton Internet Security and HP Virtual Rooms waiting on the desktops. We were quick to trash all three, but we did dig up some useful preinstalled software waiting in the wings.
HP Power Assistant, which was one of our favorite utilities from previous EliteBooks, reappears better than ever, with new features including a history of power consumption and scheduling to let you taper down energy use at different times of day. You might, for instant, enforce conservative power settings in morning when you have an entire work day ahead of you, but flick energy savings off entirely entirely at 8 p.m. to watch movies.
For this year, HP has wrapped the sometimes daunting security features within ProtectTools in a new wizard, which makes it easier to setup enterprise features like data encryption, password managers, biometrics and smart card authentication. We were able to lock the notebook down with Fort Knox level security — fingerprints, face recognition, PIN codes and passwords — with about 10 minutes of setup, no IT degree necessary.
HP QuickLook is essentially a lightweight version of Linux that boots up in seconds and delivers instant access to the Web. It’s not new for 2011, but the latest version includes widgets like weather, stocks, and even Skype to flesh out a mini desktop, and the company promises more will be on the way. The Linux platform hiding beneath HP’s branding can sometimes make QuickLook feel less than intuitive, especially when connecting to the Web, but the lack of polish makes it surprisingly spry, fulfilling its promise as a go-to tool for Web use.

Performance

With a full-power Core i7 inside and AMD Radeon HD 6470M inside, it takes a lot to really present a problem for the EliteBook 8560p, which will churn through the majority of computing tasks without batting an eye. Boatloads of tabs in a browser window? Absolutely. Fluid 1080p video playback? For sure. Image and video editing? Not a problem.
We put the EliteBook 8560p to the test with PCMark 7, which tests its capability across a range of desktop tasks including Web browsing, photo editing, and word processing. The EliteBook scored a clean 2,200. Because the benchmarking suite just launched in May, that doesn’t leave much room for comparison, so we used PCMark Vantage as well, where it scored 7,628 PCMarks. That leaves the previous EliteBooks we tested, which scored in the 5,000 range, in the dust.
We largely credit the addition of AMD’s Radeon HD 6470M for the boost in score, which shows up most notably when tossing around video and 3D graphics. Even the most steadfast office drone needs a break now and then, so we also took the liberty of testing some games. Even if you don’t plan on doing much gaming with the EliteBook 8560p, the 3D effects represent an excellent benchmark for comparing the EliteBook to other systems, and give some idea how it will perform in 3D work environments like CAD and CAM as well.

In Mafia II, a demanding 2010 release that taxes even respectable gaming systems, the EliteBook 8560p was just able to keep up at its native 1600 x 900 resolution and low settings for shadows, ambient occlusion and other details. Gameplay clipped along at an acceptable — but not totally fluid — 20 to 30 frames per second. Crysis initially chugged along even worse at 1600 x 900 resolution and all settings to high, but dropping things to low were able to induce playability. Bottom line: The EliteBook has some gaming prowess, but don’t confuse it with a brute like the $5,000 Maingear eX-L 17. For designing threaded fasteners in Autodesk Inventor, it should be more than enough GPU.

Keyboard and trackpad

Solid metal chassis or not, most users will spend most of their time banging away at keys at swiping away at a touchpad below it, two points that have proven susceptible to long-term wear in budget notebooks. HP addressed the first with its DuraKeys in previous generations, which still appear here, but the trackpad is all new.
Like Apple’s MacBook trackpads, the EliteBook 8560p trackpad now uses chemically strengthened glass rather than plastic to resist wear, and it has also been supersized to fill almost all of the available palmrest room. The pad now spans a rough 2.25 inches by 4.25 inches, giving plenty of room for carefree multitouch mousing. For users who prefer the ease of a pointer nub in the keyboard, the EliteBook still has one, though the supersized touchpad buttons make it hard to find a place to rest your hand as you use it. Oddly enough, the trackpad performed extremely well on the desktop, but had trouble registering all of our swipes in both the games we tested with. Since it’s a business notebook anyway, we can’t hold it against it, but take note.

HP’s island-style keyboard offers a surprising amount of resistance with every keypress, which speaks to its durability but can cause temporary pause to users used to more dainty keys. A full numpad makes a useful addition for number crunchers used to dialing in digits at light speed with one hand.

If there’s any drawback to this otherwise clean package, it must be the catches for HP’s industrial-strength display latches. The die-cut holes have surprisingly sharp edges that can drag on your wrists as you shift them around to type. No blood drawn, but still a surprising oversight from such an otherwise thoughtfully engineered device.

Display

Both the high-res and low-res screens come with an anti-glare coating, which allows the LED-backlit screen to shrug off sunlight and fluorescents to remain usable in just about any environment. Unfortunately, it also costs the EliteBook some of the vibrancy seen in glossy screens like the MacBook Pro’s — it just doesn’t have the “pop” and contrast that make the screens on entertainment notebooks woo viewers. It also tends toward the cool side of the color spectrum, and at full brightness it tends to look slightly washed out. Up-and-down and side-to-side viewing angles are about average.

The aluminum-alloy hinges on the EliteBook span the entire length of the chassis and feel like some of the most solid we’ve ever tested — you might actually want to use two hands to position the screen before it breaks in a little. They allow the display to recline far back to about 10 degrees from horizontal. That doesn’t quite match the gymnastic flexibility of many ThinkPads, but it’s a moot point unless you plan to engage in Quasimodo-style hunchback computing.

Battery life

A Core i7 processor and discrete graphics card plugging away inside manage to make relatively short work of the EliteBook’s standard six-cell, 55-watt-hour battery. You can plan on about four hours of operation under normal use like reading and Web browsing with 75-percent brightness, and less if you want to play video or other high-intensity activities. HP does offer 62- and 100-watt-hour batteries, that latter of which is rated for nine hours of battery life. Not bad, but remember that they’ll add to the already significant weight of the machine. While shorts stints away from the wall won’t challenge the 8560p, road warriors may want to think twice before leaving behind the wall adapter for the day.

Sound

The EliteBook 8560p uses two forward-firing speakers that you can clearly spot when you remove the one-piece bottom — they’re about the size and shape of horse pills, and just about as potent. At full volume, the EliteBook 8560p will easily fill a room with music, although, like any laptop, it gets progressively harsher after the 75 percent level. Even so, the notebook’s surprising voice should come in handy for sharing video and other audible forms of media with large groups of people.

Conclusion

Any number of notebooks come configured cheaper or lighter, but for brute processing power, comfortable, hard-wearing controls and durability, it would be hard to do better than HP’s industrial-strength EliteBook 8560p. With a starting price of $1,099, you’ll pay for all three luxuries, but together they represent a sound investment that should keep ticking well after competitors have fried hard drives, broken keys and hinges that will barely keep the screen up anymore (we’ve certainly encountered all three).
