CBS revives Financial Wellness Roadshow for teachers

Around 500 participants joined China Bank Savings’ (CBS) “Financial Wellness Roadshow for Teachers” Mindanao run. The free seminars were last held in 2019, with a total of 21 sessions nationwide, including stops in the National Capital Region, Baguio, Cebu, Iloilo, Davao, and General Santos.

The 2024 edition of the Financial Wellness Roadshow, which was led by CBS Automatic Payroll Deduction Lending Group Head and First Vice President II Niel Jumawan, focused on refreshing the teachers’ knowledge about the following:
·       debt management
·       financial goal-setting
·       personal statement of assets and liabilities analysis
·       saving strategies and techniques

“We are grateful for the opportunity given to us by the Department of Education (DepEd) to service the financial needs of our modern-day heroes, our DepEd teachers. This program is part of our efforts to give back to the community. We know our teachers are financially literate, but we also know that everyone needs a refresher course to update their personal financial strategies and techniques,” Jumawan said.

“While we stand ready to provide for their financing needs, we also want to build each teacher’s capacity to grow their savings and achieve their financial goals independently,” he added.

The roadshow had three stops--Digos City, Davao City, and General Santos City. Jumawan will also be touring CBS Mindanao Locations, including Kidapawan, Isulan, and Koronadal.

CBS, the retail lending arm of China Banking Corporation, has 238 locations nationwide, including 168 branches ( APD Lending Centers) and 70 branch lites’. Its ATM network is the country’s second largest in the thrift bank category, with 210.

Araw ng Dabaw Tattoo Fest 2024 organizers eye tattoo industry as next tourist attraction

Tattoos have come a long way in the Philippines. From being frowned upon, tattoos are now considered art and a form of self-expression.

Davao tattoo artists are also eyeing the tattoo industry as a possible tourist attraction for the city.

“Good business ang tattoo and pwede pud sya mahimong tourist attraction,” Keneth dela Cerna told Dateline Davao in an interview. Dela Cerna is also a tattoo artist and owner of the “Drill Ink Tattoo Studio” in Obrero.

Dela Cerna, Arriane Balaga and Ryan Gee are the people behind KGA Productions, the organizer of the Araw ng Dabaw Tattoo Fest 2024 slated at The Dome, NCCC Victoria Plaza Carpark in Bajada on March 16 to 17.

Back to back with the Tattoo Fest are the Death Fest Concert at The Dome and the Food and Non-Food Bazaar at the carpark.

Dela Cerna said tattoo competitions are important to the tattoo industry, especially for beginners. “They can learn a lot from the competition and this is also one way to professionalize the city’s tattoo industry,” he added.

Davao tattoo artists are on the rise but there is a need to organize and strengthen the industry to ensure quality and safety.

This is not the first time for a tattoo fest to be held in the city. Dela Cerna was also one of the organizers of the Araw ng Davao Tattoo Fest Phase 1 in 2023. The one-day on-the-spot tattoo event also attracted participants and spectators from nearby cities and provinces.

“We hope that the Tattoo Fest will be included in the Araw ng Davao list of activities as it will help promote the event,” he said.

This year’s Tattoo Fest expects a crowd of over 500 to include tattoo artists and their models. The contest is open for small to large tattoo pieces, back pieces, full arm sleeves, and full leg.

The two-day Tattoo Fest will be held from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The fun does not end there though. The Death Fest Concert will be from 6 p.m. to midnight.

“We have confirmed the participation of up to 21 bands from Davao, Cebu, Cagayan de Oro, and Manila,” dela Cerna said. The main act are two visiting bands from Hong Kong, “Human Betray” and “Cursed Eyes”.

Early registrants for the Tattoo Fest will get a free event shirt and free meals for two days. Tickets to the Tattoo Fest are being sold at P150 with a raffle ticket while tickets to the Death Fest Concert are being sold at P500 at the gate, or a discounted price of P400 for pre-sold tickets.

The SM Foundation (SMFI) celebrated the graduation of its 397 scholars from the class of 2023, including 8 summa cum laude, 72 cum laude, 55 magna cum laude, and 26 academic distinction awardees.

Globe supports Senate bills strengthening PH law vs online content piracy

Globe supports Senate bills that will amend the 26-year-old Intellectual Property Code to strengthen enforcement against online content piracy, measures that will protect the Filipino creative industries and customers who face risks online.

Senators Jinggoy Estrada and Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. have filed separate bills to strengthen the Intellectual Property Code, a parallel measure to House Bill No. 7600 by Rep. Joey Salceda of Albay's 2nd District in the House of Representatives which passed third reading in May 2023.

These legislative efforts are designed to update Republic Act No. 8293, also known as the Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines, which was established in 1997, well before online content piracy became prevalent.

"The Globe Group recognizes the urgent need to modernize the Intellectual Property Code, especially in the face of growing online threats such as online content piracy. It's crucial to safeguard our creative industries, their workforce, and consumers who might unknowingly access malicious links on pirated websites, jeopardizing their personal data," said Yoly Crisanto, Globe Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer.

Amending the Intellectual Property Code to strengthen enforcement against online content piracy will institutionalize a landmark Memorandum of Understanding that the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) recently signed with Globe and other leading Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in the country to establish a site-blocking mechanism against pirate sites.

The MOU, the first of its kind in Asia, is a significant step forward against online content piracy as it establishes a voluntary site-blocking practice against the unauthorized distribution and sale of pirated content over the internet. The MOU also outlines the general principles and procedures for site blocking as it underscores collaboration between IPOPHL and ISPs.

Globe has consistently campaigned against online content piracy through the #PlayItRight initiative, promoting the protection of content creators in an era dominated by pirated materials.

As a member of the Video Coalition of the Philippines, established last year alongside major industry players and the Asia Video Industry Association (AVIA), Globe has been at the forefront of advocating for robust intellectual property rights in the Philippines.

The proposed bills by Estrada and Revilla, both actors who are personally familiar with the perils of film piracy, aim to empower the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) to restrict access to copyright-infringing sites and initiate site-blocking measures, supporting the creative sectors against rampant piracy.

Estrada's Senate Bill 2150, submitted on May 9, 2023, suggests blocking access to websites promoting copyright violations and proposes fines of up to PHP1 million. Meanwhile, Revilla's Senate Bill No. 2385, filed on August 1, 2023, focuses on enhancing the IPOPHL's authority and responsibilities.

Estrada highlighted the significant spike in online film piracy during the COVID-19 pandemic, with illegal online links to Filipino films, including those from the 2020 Metro Manila Film Festival, being widely shared on social media.

The IPOPHL reported a noticeable increase in online piracy and counterfeiting activities in 2020, with the number of reports and complaints exceeding the average in the previous five years.

Surveys by YouGov, commissioned by the Coalition Against Piracy (CAP), suggest that enforcing site-blocking could greatly benefit the Philippines' P1.6-trillion creative industries, which contributed 7.3% to the country’s economy in 2022.

While 58% of consumers in the country interact with pirated content, many are willing to pay for legitimate content if not available on pirated platforms. The survey showed varied preferences for legal content consumption, with 53% opting for subscription services, 15% for pay-per-view, 28% for cinema, 13% for Blu-Ray or DVD, and 39% for ad-supported media.

Filipino consumers overwhelmingly support government action against online content piracy. The survey revealed that 45% support ISP restrictions on pirate websites, 27% are in favor of banning Android TV Boxes that access pirated content, and 39% back the prohibition of apps offering pirated content access.

Tagum-based Inventor Qualifies for Mindanao-wide Invention Contest

Carlos Detalo, Jr., inventor of the Tankless Foaming Machine

A Tagum-based inventor who was assisted by the Department of Science and Technology-Technology Application and Promotion Institute (DOST-TAPI) qualified for the Mindanao Cluster Regional Invention Contest and Exhibit (RICE) on October 4-5, 2023 at the VIP Hotel in Cagayan de Oro City, Misamis Oriental.

Carlos Detalo Jr., an inventor based in Tagum City, Davao Region qualified for the said invention contest with his entry “Tankless Foaming Machine” under the Outstanding Creative Research (Likha Award) Private Funded category.

He obtained funding in 2020 through the Industry-Based Engineering Design (IBED) initiative of the TAPI after he was hailed as the champion for RICE under the Utility Model Category in 2019 with his invention "Span On and Off Handle for 5-Gallon Bottle Container”.

His inventive acumen has not only contributed to regional recognition but has also garnered attention on the national stage as he was a qualifier for the National Invention Contest and Exhibit (NICE) last 2020. This year, his craft marked another significant stride in his inventive journey.

As Mr. Detalo advanced to the Mindanao-wide stage, his "Tankless Foaming Machine" invention became an inspiring figure for other aspiring innovators in the region. His success story epitomizes the power of innovation and the transformative potential of inventors in Davao.

He said that the very core of his works were the people. He wanted to ease the life of ordinary citizens through his inventions.

“I also enjoyed joining a prestigious competition like this because this gave me a privilege to meet brilliant inventors from other places and learn from their craft as well,” he added.

Mynt to acquire ECPay to serve MSMEs better, boost bills payment business

Mynt, the holding company of the Philippines’ number one finance super app, GCash, has entered into an agreement with Globe Telecom Inc. and Payment One, Inc. to acquire a 100% stake in Electronic Commerce Payments, Inc. (ECPay), for P3.0 billion.

Mynt believes its acquisition of ECPay will strengthen its position as a partner for growth of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSME). This also allows Mynt to create a more comprehensive suite of solutions that can help drive financial progress for MSMEs.

PNP, GCash nab online seller for sextortion

The Philippine National Police (PNP), in close coordination with GCash, has recently arrested a suspect who was using his online selling business to gain access to a victim’s private photos or videos for ‘sextortion’, an act of extorting money by threatening to expose sensitive materials.

The PNP has identified the suspect, an online seller from Victoria Homes, Brgy. Tunasan, Muntinlupa, who used a social media account using an alias, to threaten the victim that he would circulate her sensitive videos unless she paid him P10,000. He also managed to infiltrate the social media account of the victim’s father-in-law, to whom he sent the same threatening messages.

Unfortunately for the suspect, the victim’s husband is a police officer who immediately coordinated with his fellow law enforcers and GCash to track him down by luring him into receiving his money via e-wallet which led to his arrest.

DOST Davao City Office Collaborates with Barangay Officials for CEST Project Implementation

The Department of Science and Technology XI (DOST XI) has collaborated with barangay officials of identified disadvantaged areas for the implementation of the Community Empowerment through Science and Technology (CEST) program of the Agency.

CEST is a DOST program that deploys a package of S&T interventions to build progressive, resilient, and empowered communities for the “disadvantaged sectors” in the country. Through the program, various activities such as livelihood trainings and capacity-building services are conducted to aid the community with their needs.

With the implementation of the Mandana’s Ruling where major services will be transferred to the Local Government Units, the barangay officials from Bantol in Marilog District, Lumiad and Malabog in Paquibato District were oriented on the implementation of the CEST project in their respective barangays.

The Davao City S&T Office (CSTO) presented the package of interventions to be implemented in line with the CEST entry points which covers livelihood trainings, Disaster Risk Reduction and Management fora, digital library deployment, installation of solar street lights, and distribution of breadfruit seedlings.

An online technology needs identification was also conducted by the DOST-Forest Products Research and Development Institute (FPRDI) to identify potential interventions for the small-scale furniture manufacturing businesses in Barangays Bantol and Malabog.

FPRDI said that they will conduct wood drying, wood seasoning, and wood preservation training and discuss ways to improve the quality of furniture products from producers in both barangays.

CSTO Director Mr. Arnel Rodriguez expressed optimism that the projects to be implemented in the barangays will significantly impact their community and improve the quality of their lives.

“We are very thrilled for the exciting developments that are to come in these barangays. We are very willing to support them through our programs at DOST,” he added.

Abad, Chief of Atomic Research Division of DOST-PNRI and a Career Scientist III, underscored the importance of the safe and peaceful application of nuclear science and technology in providing solutions to the pressing problems in agriculture, industry, health, and environment sectors that the Philippines is facing.

Event highlights include promising nuclear techniques in various sectors such as the Nuclear Power Plant in the industrial sector as a potential source of energy in the country.

In the health sector, the Cobalt-60 Multipurpose Irradiator helps in treating cancer patients, while the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) is an environmentally friendly insect pest control method involving mass-rearing and sterilization, using radiation to mitigate dengue cases in the Philippines.

In the agricultural landscape, the mutation breeding technique promotes an increase in crop yields and productivity, and food irradiation where ionizing radiation applied to food could eradicate potentially dangerous bacteria, avoiding the occurrence of foodborne illnesses. GCash warns users on ‘jailbroken’ and ‘rooted' phones

In an ongoing effort to combat scams, frauds, and account takeovers, the country's most popular finance super app, GCash, is now barring 'jailbroken' and 'rooted' devices, effective immediately as a precautionary step against potential security weaknesses of modified smartphones.

Meanwhile, devices running in "developer mode", in which some users configure the operating system for testing software and applications, have also been identified as vulnerable to attacks and will be prevented from accessing the app.

The practice of altering the normal settings of a mobile device’s operating system by the manufacturer or operator is referred to as 'jailbreaking' for iOS and 'rooting' for Android. GCash stresses that using jailbroken or rooted phones will not block or cause the cancellation of a GCash account. However, using these modified devices will prohibit the user from opening the GCash app on the said device. This includes phones in developer mode, which should be switched off before using the app.

According to GCash's Chief Technology and Operations Officer Pebbles Sy, using a modified device can have severe consequences for security.

“Firstly, these devices cannot receive critical security updates, making them susceptible to viruses and various threats. Secondly, they are at an elevated risk of malware, which can result in system corruption and some sensitive personal information being compromised, including login credentials, passwords, and PINs,” explained Sy.

“Lastly, users of such devices may inadvertently expose their personal and financial data, including credit card details and online access credentials, to scammers and hackers, potentially leading to unauthorized access and fraudulent activities,” she added.

The leading fintech super app strongly advises its users to only use unmodified smartphones to access the app. GCash also cautions its customers against rooting and jailbreaking since it not only compromises security but also raises the chance of 'bricking' the phone or irreparably destroying its software, leaving the device useless.

In a bid to enhance the safety protocols and preparedness of the Philippine National Police (PNP) personnel, a comprehensive Basic Training Course on the Fundamentals of Chemical Safety and the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) was conducted by the Department of Science and Technology Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD) in partnership with the Integrated Chemists of the Philippines and Ateneo de Manila University.

The training course highlighted the importance of understanding rapid advancements in technology and the increasing use of hazardous chemicals in criminal activities.

In addition, the training equipped the PNP and DOST personnel with knowledge to proactively prevent accidents involving explosive substances, and ultimately reduce health risks for individuals and the broader community.

This Basic Training Course is a significant step forward in boosting the PNP's capabilities in dealing with chemical-related emergencies which contributes to the overall safety and security of the country.(DOST)

Shaping the future of fintech: GCash empowers young leaders through Jumpstart Internship Program

Understanding the importance of the youth in nation-building and innovation, the #1 Finance Super App GCash, recently concluded the second leg of its Jumpstart Internship Program, an 11-week learning initiative that seeks to mold undergraduate students into becoming future leaders in fintech.

Kicked off in June 2023, this year’s run received over 1,500 student applicants from different colleges and universities across the country. Aspiring interns were narrowed down to 39 shortlisted bright minds who were immersed in various business groups of the country’s leading fintech super app.

Winners of the ImaGnation innovation challenge and some of the high potential students who landed in the ImaGnation Top 15 also received a spot in this competitive and prestigious summer program.

Mentorship and collaborations

Under the mentorship of GCash leaders and experts in fintech, the interns were assigned in arms such as Tech and Operations, Commercial, Marketing, Finance, Fuse Lending, Wealth Management, New Businesses, Transformation, Strategy, People and Purpose, and Compliance.

Gearing them up for the real world, GCash gave them the opportunity to collaborate with the team in high impact projects. Likewise, weekly G Nation sessions were conducted to involve and prepare them for the fast-paced and dynamic culture of the fintech industry.

“The best way to shape the youth into becoming innovators and leaders in the industry is to introduce and immerse them in the field as early as possible. This means giving them a seat at the table and a voice to be heard through this internship program. By employing practices that are collaborative, we guide them into the right direction as the future of fintech,” said GCash Chief People Officer Robert Gonzales.

Ready for the real world

The Jumpstart Internship Program was structured to give undergraduate students a synergetic and engaging preview of how the fintech industry works and how GCash is constantly innovating to make the quality of Filipinos’ lives better through financial inclusion.

The best practices, learning behaviors, and dynamic mindset the interns learned through the internship program have prepared them to be able to keep up with the rapidly changing demands of an organization within the ever-evolving tech industry.

Batch Valedictorian Ben Bensali, a BS Development Communication student of the University of the Philippines Los Baños and previous ImaGnation participant imparted words of encouragement to his fellow interns on a valuable lesson they can apply after graduation.

“I hope you find it in your heart to serve our nation. With how turbulent our life can be as Filipinos, our country needs your great minds now, more than ever, to come together and create solutions that empower and uplift people who need it the most,” he said.

The program’s latest run culminated with a graduation ceremony last September 7 in Seda Hotel BGC where the interns received their Certificate of Achievement for completing the Jumpstart Internship Program. Special awards were given for standout interns with the best overall proactive performance and attendance.

Leading digital solutions platform Globe demonstrated its commitment to fostering innovation, collaboration, and knowledge exchange within the tech community as it hosted the 1st Globe Developers’ Conference recently.

Organized by Globe’s Information Services Group (ISG), Globe DevCon was a convergence of visionary developers, business moguls, and tech aficionados. It showcased cutting-edge technologies, shared pioneering solutions, and promoted best practices.

More than just a learning experience, the event provided an opportunity for attendees to immerse themselves in a world of innovation, all while having fun and being inspired to take their development pursuits to the next level.

Globe Chief Information Officer Raul Macatangay encouraged everyone to "create together,” calling on partners at the recent Globe DevCon to be “co-creators” and “co-builders.”

"Each one of us can be a builder or creator. No matter how ordinary we feel," he passionately declared. Macatangay went on to acknowledge the invaluable contributions of the partners present, referring to them as Globe's "co-creators" and "co-builders."

Ricky Mohan, Globe ISG’s Senior Advisor for Cloud Enablement and Service Operations Division, echoed this sentiment during his keynote address.

"DevCon is a day for creators, by creators," he said.

Mohan championed the principles of transparency, collaboration, and empowerment, all aimed at reducing creator friction: "If we work together, and we share, we collaborate, we could be so much better at what we're doing. I'm not saying we're bad, but we could be really, really better."

Karthik Krishna, Globe Senior Advisor for Product and Digital Growth, shifted the focus to the customers, discussing the significance of "Design Thinking."

"It is about them and for them. The closer the end-users' needs are analyzed and answered, the more successful the adoption or purchase of a solution. You iterate until you get it right from a customer perspective,” he explained.

The event was a perfect blend of tech and product exhibitions, coupled with enlightening learning sessions. Topics ranged from Cloud and Operations to Application Development and Delivery, and Best Practices and Collaboration.

As the day drew to a close, attendees were invited to be part of the Globe Cloud Community. This initiative aims to promote continuous development and foster even greater collaboration among cloud enthusiasts within the company.
